Watchdog Groups: Trump Broke Federal Law With Fundraising Emails to Foreign Politicians

WTF
Politics • Views: 49,905

Yesterday it emerged that Donald Trump has been — bizarrely — sending fundraising emails to foreign citizens, including members of parliament in the UK, Australia, Iceland, Denmark and Finland.

Today, two watchdog groups have announced they’re filing FEC complaints alleging that the Trump campaign has broken federal law.

“Donald Trump should have known better,” Paul S. Ryan, the deputy executive director at the Campaign Legal Center, said in a statement. “It is a no-brainer that it violates the law to send fundraising emails to members of a foreign government on their official foreign government email accounts, and yet, that’s exactly what Trump has done repeatedly.”

Fred Werthemier, the president of Democracy 21, said that Trump’s fundraising pleas to foreign members of parliament are “a strange and unique development that we have not seen before in campaign fundraising.”

What does this mean to his eligibility? Or is this just a fine penalty when proven?

Here’s hoping this adds to the growing impression of his campaign being run by feckless goobers, giving the lie to the whole “He knows how to manage!” appeal. If he’s both a loser, AND a horrible manager, what’s the point of him.

Something that people don’t understand for some reason. Is it because some Christians just can’t bring themselves to accept the fact that Christianity is a religion just like any other? I mean, even if you sincerely believe that both the new testament and the old testament are the literal word of God, and you don’t want to accept the fact that Christianity is like any other faith, could you at least admit that you believe in a religion, instead of trying to deny that you do?

Plagiarized Lessons and Deceptive Tactics: A Look Inside the Trump Institute

Another Don Con, not Trump U.

But Mr. Trump also lent his name, and his credibility, to a seminar business he did not own, which was branded the Trump Institute. Its operators rented out hotel ballrooms across the country and invited people to pay up to $2,000 to come hear Mr. Trump’s “wealth-creating secrets and strategies.”

And its customers had ample reason to ask whether they, too, had been deceived.

As with Trump University, the Trump Institute promised falsely that its teachers would be handpicked by Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump did little, interviews show, besides appear in an infomercial — one that promised customers access to his vast accumulated knowledge. “I put all of my concepts that have worked so well for me, new and old, into our seminar,” he said in the 2005 video, adding, “I’m teaching what I’ve learned.”

Reality fell far short. In fact, the institute was run by a couple who had run afoul of regulators in dozens of states and been dogged by accusations of deceptive business practices and fraud for decades. Similar complaints soon emerged about the Trump Institute.

Speaking of which, the leader of Gibraltar’s Government has been in talks with the First Minister of Scotland.

Scotland may end up with Gibraltar. I still think a United Ireland and Scotland is the best way forward, because a nation of 11-12+ Million will have more weight on the world stage than two of 6 million and 5 million. In addition, a larger nation will be better able to resist the attempts of Private Corporations to prey on them.

You could have a United Republic of Great Ireland and Scotland.

Ubiq  Jun 29, 2016 • 11:54:09am

Not to be a killjoy, but this is probably a case of some prankster adding these email addresses to his database via his website. The odds that he’s actually this dumb (particularly given that the targeted politicians seem to include a lot of obvious Trump haters) is very low.

If any of them actually give money, he will likely get a cranky note from the FEC and be forced to give the money back. This isn’t uncommon - all candidates get them, and you may remember that Sanders had 600+ pages of FEC violations. Yes, campaigns should do a better job of detecting and weeding out foreign and excess contributions, but both Trump and Sanders have such stunted campaign organizations that they really never developed the bandwidth or structure to do it well.

Actually I stand corrected, I just checked the FEC web site:

Foreign Nationals
Contributions and donations may not be solicited,14 accepted, or received from, or made directly or indirectly by, foreign nationals who do not have permanent residence in the United States (i.e., those without green cards). This prohibition encompasses all US elections; including federal, state and local elections. 11 CFR 110.20(b).

I am slightly warming to Warren as a potential VP. Kaine would be a safer pick.

Interesting thing about Warren is the GOP refused to confirm her a few years ago as head of the Consumer Protection Board she helped establish. For that they lost a Senate seat when she beat Brown in MA, and now could wind up having her on an all-female Dem ticket. They could have let her roll around out of sight in a government bureau, but because of their spite and awfulness they wouldn’t do it.

He’s got a very pro-choice voting record as a Senator and he never interfered with legal abortion here as Virginia’s governor. I will admit that he’s not as liberal as Warren is but honestly, VP really doesn’t have much to do with ideology and the platform this year is quite progressive.

The thing is, though, a sitting VP is (almost) always the automatic frontrunner when the sitting president is termed out (or possibly declines to seek a second term). The fact that Cheney and Biden have chosen not to run following two terms as VP is actually out of the ordinary (granted, in a very limited sample size).

Nixon runs in 1960 as a sitting VP; Humphrey ran in ‘68 as Johnson’s successor; Mondale ran in 1984 after serving as Carter’s VP; GHW Bush followed Reagan; Gore followed Clinton in 2000.

That’s why party activists care about who the VP nominee is: it serves as a signal of where the party may be going in the future.

Having someone who wasn’t always ardently pro-choice could provide a sense of balance to the ticket, the party of the big tent, etc.

But overall Kaine just strikes me as a principled guy, and that could help HRC out, too. He seems trustworthy. More so than most other politicians.

Very good points. And he also could have some unexpected benefits in minority communities, he was mayor of Richmond and he speaks fluent Spanish since he was a Catholic missionary in Honduras and his father in law is a former Republican governor of Virginia who has been very supportive of Democrats including Obama since he left. Kaine is a team player I’d say too. Early supporter of Obama in 2008 and was an early supporter of Clinton this time. He’s got a lot of experience working with a heavily divided legislature too. He’s not a sexy pick but you know what Biden wasn’t seen that way either and I’ve grown to love Joe Biden.,

You could have the Executive and Judicial Branches in Dublin, while Edinburgh gets the Legislative. If Northern Ireland were to be included, Belfast could get Judicial

Glasgow would become their answer to NYC, as it would be a bit larger than the 2 capitals.

The president of Ireland is mostly a ceremonial figure head. Executive authority, under the Irish constitution is vested in the cabinet. Most countries don’t have a strong, independent executive like the US. Outside the US, France probably has the strongest executive branch but even the French model sees the presidency marginalized when the president and parliament are controlled by the same party.

And honestly, as the EU becomes more integrated, I think national borders in Europe will become less important. Eventually, I think Churchill’s vision of a United States of Europe will happen, probably by the end of this century.

Not to be a killjoy, but this is probably a case of some prankster adding these email addresses to his database via his website.

Josh Marshall explains why this scenario is highly unlikely:

Now a few people suggested that maybe someone was just pranking Drumpf - going to the website and signing up various foreign parliamentarians and dignitaries. But this seems far too systematic for that. It does appear to be every member of each parliament. You’d need to collect each email and then manually add them in on the Drumpf website, somehow get them to confirm the opt-in confirmation email. It’s too complicated. These are lists that were almost certainly added from within the campaign.

And McDonnell got to play the moderate despite saying that a lesbian judge shouldn’t be allowed to remain a judge because she was guilty of sodomy.

He never did answer the reporter’s question about whether he had ever committed sodomy.

“It certainly raises some questions about the qualifications to serve as a judge,” he told the Daily Press’s Terry Scanlon. “There is certain homosexual conduct that is in violation of the law… I’m not telling you I would disqualify a judge per se if he said he was gay. I’m talking about their actions.”

That’s not even the most absurd part of the story, though. When Scanlon asked McDonnell if he had ever committed sodomy, the Republican answered, “Not that I can recall.”

If you recall, it was Casinos in Canada that opened up legalized gambling in cross border states. They legalize pot in Canada, the push will be on to stop that money at the border and make it legal here. Legal marijuana, the PLANT, is a very good thing. Very, very good. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Canada!

What’s the point in having a squish on the choice issue as the VP pick? I can’t see this as appealing to any significant number of gettable votes for a Democrat.

This is why I’m still thinking it could be Castro… The Democratic party sent strong signals in 2012 that they want the Castro brothers to have a big part in representing the future of the party. I know he gets knocked for lack of experience, but I just don’t see how Trump can make an argument about lack of experience with a straight face. He’s much more likely to attack Castro’s lack of “Real American-ness” and accuse him of being a Terror Baby.

I don’t know enough about the Castro brothers to speak on either of them being good choices. If Trump ends up being something of a national Prop 187, I wonder if one or both of their futures might be better served via alternate routes.

A buddy of mine was stationed in Sicily in the 80s and he said their version of a “pizza” was essentially any sort of vegetable(s) and meat that were available. Then again, maybe the locals were just fucking with him when they made him a broccoli, onion, and pork pizza.

When we make homemade we do broccoli, sausage and onion as one; another version is mayo, green onion, and bacon; and finally pesto and black bean. Damn, they’re good. No pineapple, though, curiously.

I’d prefer Clinton focus on picking a VP candidate that could actually take over and be an effective president in the event of her incapacitation. Neither Warren nor Castro excite me in the least in this regard; Warren’s experience and knowledgebase is very deep but very narrow (foreign policy in particular seems a complete blind spot), and Castro is a fairly inexperienced suit at this point in his career. I don’t frankly know a damn thing about Booker.

Picking VP candidates to appeal to disaffected voting blocs is GOP crap. We’re picking somebody to potentially do a job first and foremost.

I’d think that the check mark against Booker is the same one as against Warren: they both come from states with a Republican governor. That means you have to win an extra seat in the Senate, and barring a giant wave down ticket, I can’t see that being a risk worth taking. Franken and Kaine have the benefit of having Democratic governors in their home states. It is kind of strange that there’s no obvious choice on either side this time around. Usually there’s a couple of obvious/safe choices, even if they don’t get picked. This time, it seems not so much.

Well, this is the Republican party. I don’t think they need to conjure up black stereotypes. They’ve been running on them since Reagan and even earlier.

So true.

But bigoted Boston AM talkshow hosts (Like Mr. Carr) usually resort to dog whistle racism. War whoops and “Pocahontas” is just naked racism.

I think there’s a decent chance that the Trump campaign will use The Wall as an instruction manual for staging the Republican convention this year.

What I am seeing a lot of that list coming down to is places where people want to live are usually expensive to live in and therefore they are not good places to live because the cost of living is too high…

I’ll bet a lot of RE folks recommend searching Facebook groups for the towns you are interested in. Take that with a carload of salt; the groups in my area are all complainers (and snobs and NIMBYs). I live in a gentrifying town, too; when I blogged, I talked about a proposed new train station in my city. One guy swore that he would sue if the station blocked his vista while driving towards downtown. (The station was finally built years later. No word from the courts.)

LePage’s latest example of Republican heartlessness is evil, but also interesting when contrasted with Trump, whom he vocally supports. Trump has clearly abandoned the “hard-work, bootstrap” type rhetoric that the Republican party has run on for so long. Apparently white people who are “angry about the economy” are exempt from the bootstrap lecture, unlike the poor, working-class minorities who were, and still are in many ways, systematically excluded from large sectors of the economy.

Funny how quickly government stops being The Problem once a white nationalist is calling the shots.

No kidding. I see the condescending crap directed at black minorities on welfare who are told to “stop having babies” but never a word for poor whites who also receive public assistance. Let’s be honets though. The bootstrap rhetoric always was crap.

Trump doesn’t need to ever deal in truth about anything. He knows his crowd is perfectly willing to buy into lies just as long as his is lying about things they believe truth or not.

It always cracks me up when people ask about Trump supporters: What are they thinking?

That is the problem, they aren’t thinking, they are reacting. And when you don’t think you don’t need facts. When you are reacting, all you need is ammunition words…feed the negative and stand back.

Yeah, in many ways, Trump has been the least ideological GOP candidate in my lifetime. He has skipped much of the old conservative demagoguery while inventing some new ones.

He used to love homophobic slurs (“Call the Boston Globe, I’ve been raped!”, after the paper did a spotlight on prison rape.) Not so much now.

I wonder if he still punches down. I haven’t seen for myself since the column in which he made fun of some poor woman with bad eyesight who was trying to feed glass jars into the soda bottle recycling machines. Even if I didn’t have the eyes of an 80-year old man, I would be upset.

They’ve obviously been assimilated. It started out with Rasmussen being created to manufacture fake right-wing polls. Then the assimilated Gallup some years ago. Of course you’ve always got Faux Noise—and now Quinnipiac.

According to 538’s pollster grades, Quinnipiac has a slight Republican house effect (0.7) and managed to correctly predict 87% of races polled. So again, this one is probably an outlier more than anything - you get those sometimes in polling, just a weird sample that gives you strange results.

re: #175 Testy Toad T
