Donald Trump Jr. Quietly Unfollows Two Twitter “Alt-Right” Antisemites After Being Exposed

Hiding from the light
Politics • Views: 61,333

After we reported yesterday that Donald Trump Jr., son of the Republican nominee for president, was following at least two overt antisemites on Twitter, we heard from a flock of Trump fans trying to claim it was because Trump Jr. wanted to “troll” them, or because he wanted to “keep track” of them. Others tried to argue the Twitter users we identified as racists and antisemites weren’t anything of the sort, just fun guys having fun with other people who like to have fun. (We have some examples of the “funny” tweets these people have been posting here.)

Here’s our screenshot of Trump Jr.’s following list as it appeared yesterday afternoon, showing the two “alt-right” antisemites under discussion, @Ricky_Vaughn99 and @Bidenshairplugs:

But now there’s been a development that destroys any attempts at deflection (reminiscent of the Trump campaign’s attempt to explain away his antisemitic image as simply a “sheriff’s star”): today when we checked Trump Jr.”s following list again, we discovered that sometime after we published our article exposing the antisemites he was following, he… unfollowed them. That’s right, they’re no longer on the list.

And he did this quietly, obviously hoping to cover it up before the media in general picked up on it. After all, at this point the last thing the Trump campaign needs is another antisemitism scandal. I’d love to have heard the discussions that went on between Trump Jr. and other advisers over this; you know there were words.

Needless to say, if Trump Jr. were really following these vile cavemen to “troll” or “keep track” of them, he wouldn’t have silently dropped them from his list. This is the act of a person who was caught doing something he couldn’t defend, and hurriedly tried to hide it before it was noticed more widely.

Trump does not “empower smart people.” He empowers people who flatter him, because he thinks no one else is smarter than he is.

Ygelsias has a post up on Vox that shows how Trump’s businesses basically were just conduits to paying off his personal debts:

Trump made money in Atlantic City through two primary means. First, he extracted management fees from companies he was involved with, and second, he transferred personal debts to companies he controlled:

The pattern started with his very first Atlantic City venture, a partnership with Harrah’s for which he was paid a $24 million construction management fee.
Over the years, the Times reports, Trump “collected millions of dollars in salary, bonuses and other payments.”
In 1993 the Trump Plaza casino sold more than $100 million in junk bonds, and “more than half of the new money went to pay off Mr. Trump’s unrelated personal loans.”
In 1995 the company staged an IPO, and then a week later “the new company began using some of the almost $300 million it had raised to clear Mr. Trump’s personal debts.”
Trump’s casinos paid $300,000 a year for the right to use Trump’s jet to transport celebrities to gigs.
Trump appears to have bilked the shareholders of Trump casinos and resorts out of the opportunity to share in a $1 million profit related to the sale of shares in Riviera Hotel and Casino, keeping the money for himself instead.
What Trump did not do, according to the Times, was run successful casinos:

“Revenues at other Atlantic City casinos rose 18 percent from 1997 through 2002; Mr. Trump’s fell by 1 percent.”
“Had Mr. Trump’s revenues grown at the rate of other Atlantic City casinos, his company could have made its interest payments and possibly registered a profit.”
The public company never turned a profit, leaving behind a trail of losses for shareholders and bondholders and unpaid bills to contractors and subcontractors.

They’re defending their sports team. You suck and they rule. Anything their team does is okay and anything your team does is the worst thing ever. It works so well for Republicans since most of them were brought up in smaller cities that worship football athletes and everyone hates “the refs” which translate into hating government and rules.

Trump pays bribes so he doesn’t face prosecution about Trump University? That’s okay because it is his team. Hillary uses a private email server? That is literally treason and she gets away with it because the law doesn’t matter to the rich!

Yea silly overreacting lady! You can’t just go calling someone an anti-Semite simply because they choose to associate with people who admire Hitler and wave swastikas around while speaking wistfully of genocide.

I’m starting to wonder if anyone in Donald Trump’s family know what anti-Semite means?

I think there’s an enormous threat of intimidation there. Trump is a nasty, mean spirited bully who never lets a grudge go. Being his son in law would be hell without any sort of standing up to him. This is no excuse, frankly, these people all have enough money that they could stop working tommorrow and move to Tahiti and be just fine and never have to see the Hell’s Cheeto again. But, money means more to a lot of people than anything else, status too. I can’t even imagine being in that awful family. Yuck.

You can also hold racist views about Jewish people and not be anti-semitic, per se.

I think in actuality Trump holds most or all of the traditional anti-semitic views about Jewish people, particularly all of the ones revolving around money, and sees these attributes as positive, something that he personally seeks to emulate. They’re winners, yuuuuuuge, golden winners!

There’s a long history of recycling characters and portraying them differently. Whether it’s alt-universes, retconning, or just having new people assume the role, this is just more of the same.

Yet, when you’re doing this with your MCU central character - Tony Stark/Iron Man, you’re definitely taking a chance and are putting your chips down on multiculturalism and supporting strong female characters.

After all, Iron Man is the role that led to something like $10+ billion in movie revenues (not counting all the toys/marketing deals) (gotta back out the Spiderman and non Marvel made movies).

If I could reduce the number and strength of the braces we use, and get rid of all the ventilation, we’d be a lot more profitable! It would also help if we could make our miners into independent contractors and make them bear all the risk of collapses, etc!”

The UK’s Iraq war report is far more devastating than the FBI report. UK intelligence predicted the chaos which would descend on Iraq as a result of the invasion. Blair went along anyway to maintain good relations with the US. But that was when we needed a real friend to take the car keys away.

Actually, they can, but things can get weird if they are, so it’ll never happen in practice.

The Twelfth Amendment says slightly differently:

The Electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and of all persons voted for as Vice-President, and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate; — the President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted; — The person having the greatest number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President. But in choosing the President, the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote; a quorum for this purpose shall consist of a member or members from two-thirds of the states, and a majority of all the states shall be necessary to a choice.

Now, theoretically, if the election was thrown to Congress because nobody got to 270 electoral votes, it could happen because I don’t believe there’s anything stopping Congress from picking anyone they please. But as far as the electoral college goes: nope.

That only restricts the electors if the President-elect and Vice President-elect are from their home states, so it would only affect the electors of one state.

I’m fairly certain that most states, in order to comply with the 12th Amendment have provisions that wouldn’t allow a ticket on the ballot with both members from the same state. And that’s because every state has a law binding electoral voters to the results of the popular vote.

That’s because, for all the claims you hear about principles, the overriding principle that guides most people appears to be “keep the people who think like me in power.” It’s not really surprising - you can’t accomplish a lot of the goals that people want to achieve through government if you’re not the governing party. Particularly for conservatives, as you can’t lower taxes or force women to have children or keep gay people from getting married or trans folk from using the bathrooms.

Maybe it would be different if we had two functioning parties, but we don’t and haven’t really for a while.

The electoral college prohibition on a state selecting both a President and Vice President from their state was in response to fear that a state like Virginia would dominate the Executive Branch.

Not an issue now with the number of states and the dispersion of the population across the whole continent, but it was a serious concern at the time.

It actually happened once, in 1836. Richard Johnson, Democrat Martin Van Buren’s VP pick, was found to be having an affair with a slave after the election but before the Electoral College met. Virginia’s electors decided they couldn’t be having with that and withheld their support; without their electoral votes, Johnson didn’t have a majority and had to go to the Senate, where he won a 2/3 majority over the main Whig Francis Granger- including Virginia’s senators. (The Whigs ran two different tickets, North and South.)

This. If you take any set of tens of thousands of Secretary of State emails and subject them to the kind of investigation that the FBI did, it is certain that a few security-related warts will show up. Especially since the FBI applied a “should have known” standard for classification, as opposed to reliance on security markings.

The UK’s Iraq war report is far more devastating than the FBI report. UK intelligence predicted the chaos which would descend on Iraq as a result of the invasion. Blair went along anyway to maintain good relations with the US. But that was when we needed a real friend to take the car keys away.

I’m sure the US media has more important things to report on like Hilary’s bribing the head of the FBI and the current antics of the Kardashians.

Reminds me of stuff I read about the Bay of Pigs invasion: British intelligence warned the United States that there was no popular support for a revolt against Castro, particularly in the area where the invasion was going to be launched, but JFK et al. didn’t bother to listen.

Fair enough, but his tax returns aren’t relevant to anything anymore. Sanders lost despite the advantage of concealing his finances, along with his many other advantages. Not really much of a candidate, and that’s why it’s so galling to have Hillary making any kind of platform or program concession to this prick.

3 days of fighting in Las Vegas.

Mega-betting, millions in PPV buys, in watching cable TV, etc.

The UFC itself may have been sold for $4.2B - the details are still shady.

This is a company that was bought for a couple of million dollars by a pair of gambling industry brothers. That’s a 2000x increase in value.

It absolutely was a straight up execution, and you have to wonder what would have happened but for the presence of bystander videos? That the officers would have claimed the shooting in self defense, or that the guy reached for a gun? Or some other justification for killing the man?

Even with this video, I still wonder whether the officers will be indicted, let alone convicted or sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence. Far too few of these officer-involved shooting cases end up with convictions and lengthy prison sentences.

Those results are just for the San Diego County part of CA-49. The results for the whole district are Issa 84,626 (50.8%), Applegate 75,828 (45.5%), Wingo 6,087 (3.7%). Still pretty bad for a longtime incumbent.

Looking at other districts, David Valadao only got 54% of the vote in the 21st, Steve Knight got just 48.3% in the 25th (and all Republicans combined for 55.6%), Ken Calvert is under 55% in the 42nd, and Dana Rohrabacher’s at 56.6% in the 48th. Good selection of pickup opportunities for California Democrats.

I see Chuck C. Johnson is already doing what he does, libeling a dead black man.

Whatever Alton Sterling did before he was executed, it does not matter. People like the Rage Furby and his pal Mike Cernovich seem to want a society where police can execute anyone they want for any reason, but especially if they’re not white.

weren’t like the last 5 or so white male mass shooters all caught alive?

Cheney was a Texas resident until the committee he led decided he was the best choice to be Bush’s running mate in 2000, he changed his residency to Wyoming and all was good. One of the Trumps would just have to change their residency to Florida or wherever. Technically, the president and vice-president cannot be from the same state.

Cheney did have Wyoming backstory:

” In 1978, Cheney was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives representing Wyoming’s At-large congressional district from 1979 to 1989; he was reelected five times, briefly serving as House Minority Whip in 1989.”

Yes. But his San Diego portion has many gov’t employees and retirees, and the more Issa goes on about shutting down gov’t, the more blowback he’ll get.

Issa didn’t even get 51% in the primary.

I expect the race to be a close one.

In the 2014 general election Issa got 60% of the vote:
That year in the primary he got almost 62% of the primary vote:

So I propose that Issa may be in trouble.

By the way, with less than 9000 ballots left to count, Clinton is still winning the Democratic primary by 371,579 votes or 7.3%. But I’m sure things will turn around, Sanders, you asshat.

Chuck Todd is getting schooled by a guy by the name of Abbe Lowell (former House of Reps council) who represents folks on classified information cases. Even though Chuck is trying hard to break his thinking Lowell is not deterred.

His basic take is Hillary did not knowingly put the information in emails into the hands of anyone outside the state department network. All the emails were to staff and others intended to receive the information. That kills any thought of her being criminally reckless with the info

He mentions the Petraeus case being totally different because the Petraeus info did get into the hands of outside the loop people…his girlfriend who also happened to be a journalist as well as others.

He had some other good stuff too. Hopefully there will be more such reasonable takes to outweigh all the GOP outrage…as displayed by Jason Chaffetz who was on just prior to Lowell.

Most of us (and I include myself even if I never was a Sanders supporter) believe in healthcare for all and being able to get an education without going into a lifelong servitude of repayment. But there are a lot of Dems who believe that…and that is hardly cowering. There’s balance and reality. That is the fine line Hillary has to walk.

His bullshit is bullshit, and we all know it’s bullshit, so why are we agreeing to try to pass his bullshit without an actual non-bullshit plan!?! Especially since, thanks to his draining hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions and months of the primary schedule, actually winning control of Congress is now quite unlikely.

I’m not referring to that, which appears to have been mercifully rejected. I’m referring to conceding his excessive $15/ hour minimum wage proposal, and his free-college giveaway, and all the other concessions he’s demanded. He shouldn’t have gotten anything but his ass in a sling given his consistent refusal to help her or any other Democrat.

You think a $15 minimum wage is excessive? Adjusted for inflation it is almost exactly where the minimum wage was set at the last increase…which was, what…the 80s? I won’t get into the whole college thing but I think there are things that could be done to give more people opportunity for higher education without putting them tens of thousands of dollars in debt before they even start their self-supporting lives.

You can’t simply dismiss it.

$15 an hour will help lift all wages. A more educated population is one that can complete globally. It’s not all pie-in-the-sky. Bernie’s plan was, but the concepts are not.

Just my two cents.

The reason that Trumpy Dumpy is infesting the (R) side of the ballot is that Republican politicians, in thrall to the extreme wing of the party, kept making promises and platform commitments that were, as the FBI says, grossly negligent- they knew that they couldn’t be kept under our current system of government, and especially without the White House and control of Congress. I used to be a Republican until 2013- the government shutdown, for reasons not worth going into right now, convinced me that the party was in the wrong. And I live in a state whose governor (until the end of last year) was the personification of this process.

So I hope you can understand why I consider it such a bad idea to make these kinds of pie-in-the-sky promises without a plan to follow through, or without the intention to do so. I hate to see Hillary falling prey to nice-sounding slogans like McCain and Romney did.

This is pretty much how I feel. Health care and higher education, specifically, are two invaluable services to which I believe everyone should have access. The exploding costs of both over the last few years have done much to convince me that perhaps we need to do something different compared to the traditional capitalist model.

In any case, I don’t think the GOP was made vulnerable to a charlatan like Trump because they are serial over-promisers. I think it’s largely because they made underpants-gnome-like promises without any sort of disclosed mechanism for achievement. “Repeal and replace” isn’t a cogent policy position, it’s a lump of woo-woo. “Punish Wall Street” is an emotion, not a proposal. “Recreate white industrial jobs by isolationism or magic” is a dream, not a plan.

A minimum wage bill, even a very aggressive one, is a specific thing that Congress would pass and a President would sign, and then it would roll into effect based on the provisions contained therein. I don’t see that wanting this to happen, even if it’s very unlikely in our current climate, will make Democratic voters particularly keen to vote for an appleheaded vagina mouth troll baby fifteen years down the road.

There are certainly some campaigns that are not about winning. We see that every cycle during presidential elections: Kucinich; Bauer; Santorum; Keyes; Ron Paul. This is actually how first the conservative movement and now the wingularity have shifted the center of the GOP so far to the right. They’ve had generally unserious candidates who are taken seriously enough in the early states that the mainstream candidates have to move right to placate the basest of the base. Had the Democrats had more of a field this year, Sanders would probably have filled this role.

In capitalist countries man exploits man.

Luckily, in socialist countries it’s exactly the opposite!

In capitalist countries, wealth owners exploit workers for extra toys like vacation homes, cars, jewellery and the like.

In socialist countries, workers exploit owners so they can have things like high standard of living, education and health care.

Both sides are exactly the same.

$15 is way too high for most of the country; again, that would more than double the minimum wage at a stroke and raise it about 40% higher than ever before (after inflation adjustment). It’s too high to be a plausible bargaining chip; I’m honestly not sure Hillary’s previous proposal of $12 wasn’t too much.

I’m going to vote for Hillary, never fear (although it’s doubtful that it will do any good). It’s just that it’s so frustrating to see my candidate decide not to stand up for herself in this, as she’s done so often in other contexts.

Because open carry, just like stand your ground, only applies to white men. Anyone else tries it, they’re just targets.

Charles P. Pierce :

By the way, for those who will make a point of Sterling’s carrying a gun, which has been reported in a number of places, remember that Louisiana is an open-carry state. If he were armed, then, right up until the moment somebody shot him to death, Alton Sterling was exercising his Second Amendment rights in exactly the way the NRA and its noisy apologists have suggested we all should.

Except that we’re not all black, the true original American Exceptionalism has come home again.

And as Pierce sarcastically says in his continuing coverage of these atrocities, “It’s not about race because it’s never about race.”

So because nobody bothered to fix what was broken it’s too much to do it? I call bullshit on not being able to handle it. People at the lower end of the spectrum can only work so many jobs before giving up - or getting sick from working three or four jobs only to not have access to healthcare because it’s healthcare or food.

I think you’re talking past each other. Brian J isn’t saying that $15/hr is bad. He’s pointing out that in a state like Louisiana where half of wage earners make less than that, it would be a giant shock to the system. And likely, impractical to boot. Hell, California, with our median income over $60,000 (meaning median hourly income is somewhere around $30/hr) isn’t going to get to $15/hr as minimum wage until 2022. A big jump in the minimum wage would likely have an inflationary effect with many retail/restaurants raising prices to compensate for suddenly much larger overhead - meaning your plan of people having more disposable income goes out the window.

re: #389 Brian J.

Maybe your candidate understands that sometimes, it’s stupid to completely reject everything just because it comes from the campaign she beat.

For fuck’s sake, she’s a woman. If she refused to compromise, the story wouldn’t be how she was being strong and standing up for herself. It would be about how she’s ungracious, a bitch, and doesn’t care about the progressives because she’s beholden to her corporate overlords (playing nicely into the Bernie or Bust narrative there). Instead, she’s cutting the knees out from under them. I don’t think she’s done anything that would set up the hackles of the more reasonable Bernie supporters and her willingness to listen and be open to ideas is probably helping smooth the way for them to vote for her even without Bernie’s endorsement.

Anyway, I obviously can’t tell you not to freak out over this. You can spend your energy how you want to. Mine’s going elsewhere.

I completely and wholeheartedly disagree with you on this.

15 sounds high to me for the entire country. (I live in NYC where 15 is not enough, but perhaps is OK in MIssissippi). I would like to start with something more realistic (like the 10 that Obama suggested) and phase in higher amounts over the next 5 years.

I also think it makes sense to sound somewhat flexible when writing a platform . Give everyone a little room to negotiate.
But I agree that the min wage MUST go up. If the party is willing to support the 15 bucks per hour, they should put it in the platform. Just be ready to defend it. Backing down is always our worst mistake.

I see the Chilicot report isn’t taking much grip of the American attention.

Nevertheless, Bloomberg runs with this article:

Iraq Inquiry Shows Oil Was a Consideration for U.K. Before War

The U.K. government held talks with Royal Dutch Shell Plc and BP Plc to ensure British energy companies were “well-placed to pick up contracts in the aftermath” of the invasion of Iraq, according to declassified documents released as part of an official inquiry.

Given that Drumpfskind boasts that he’s going to go into Iraq and take their oil, I suppose Americans don’t really care about how damning the Chilicot report is.

Currently Iraqi oil production is over 4M bpd, but it fluctuates.

Still, that is a whole lot more than one Saddam could export, which I guess was the point of all this mess.

Lost in all this talk about the $15 minimum wage is that the change wont be overnight. It will be phased in over time - figure 3-5 years (or more). Stepping up the amount will give businesses time to adapt and pass on costs.

It also means that employees will start to see benefits, but not nearly as fast. They’ll have more disposable income, and rely less on food stamps and other safety net programs to get by.

The federal minimum wage is a tricky issue, I think. 29 states have a higher minimum wage than the federal government (though many have tipped wage scales and some are less than a dollar an hour higher than the federal rate). So the question becomes, how do you get people in California or Massachusetts to go along with something that changes nothing for them, while also convincing Alabama and Mississippi (who have no minimum wage) that it won’t turn their local economies into Greece? And that’s before you get into cost of living issues

She has zero experience - the same as her dad on foreign policy/economics/domestic policy.
She has gone along with her dad’s anti-Semitic bigot brigade tactics, which is extremely troubling since she should know better, and doesn’t care because it’s all in pursuit of the core GOP bigot brigade vote.
She doesn’t know anything about governing, but suddenly she’s the perfect VP choice?

No experience. No problem.

Speaking of Ted Cruz, looks like some Cruz delegates are trying to find a way to get Ted’s name into nomination at the RNC. They’re looking for a floor fight, since it only takes the support of delegates from 8 states or territories to nominate someone and Cruz won 10. The plan is to get Cruz nominated from the floor, which would give Cruz a chance to speak at the convention on his own behalf.

It’s exceedingly desperate and Cruz hasn’t signaled that he’s even interested in it at this point, but the #NeverTrump folks are aiming for anything they can hang on to.

Comey never said they were all used simultaneously, this is a misunderstanding on the reporters part. “Secretary Clinton used several different servers and administrators of those servers during her four years at the State Department, and used numerous mobile devices to view and send e-mail on that personal domain. As new servers and equipment were employed, older servers were taken out of service, stored, and decommissioned in various ways.” Actual numbers, not in the published statement.

It was poorly phrased on his part.

Nope. Don’t count on it.

His support wont fall below 30%, no matter if he even shot and killed someone in broad daylight. In that instance, they’d want to know who he killed (and what race/religion/nationality) before they came to a conclusion.

Hypothetically, and this is very far out there on the fringes of hypothetically, what would happen if Trump managed to come in third? Let’s say that Johnson is able to get enough support to get on the debate stage and Trump continues his implosion. Would the GOP lose matching funds?

re: #389 Brian J.

OK, this is bullshit. Happy Warrior and I had this discussion the other day. The $2.00 minimum wage I got for my first job would be $14.38 in today’s money, and that didn’t crash the economy, in fact the economy was booming. His was exactly half that 30 years later. The 1960s disprove your thesis.

The minimum wage was $1.60 in 1968, or about $10.34 in 2016 US dollars. That’s the highest it’s ever been. It wasn’t raised to $2 until 1974, by which time inflation had knocked it down to about $9 in today’s money.

Another fun fact: without a source of propulsion, a ship that shape would turn side on to the waves and quickly capsize as it rolled side to side. I never see a propulsion source on any of the ark “replicas”.

So, I put on my creationist hat and pondered. And the truth was revealed.

In order to deal with the massive amount of animal excrement generated daily, the animals all took turns defecating off the rear of the ship. This “poopreller”, ejecting mass from the rear of the ship, provided the propulsion.

Which explains the origin of the term poop deck.

In capitalist countries, wealth owners exploit workers for extra toys like vacation homes, cars, jewellery and the like.

In socialist countries, workers exploit owners so they can have things like high standard of living, education and health care.

Both sides are exactly the same.

You missed the whole point of the Soviet joke. But I expected that from you.
