After we reported yesterday that Donald Trump Jr., son of the Republican nominee for president, was following at least two overt antisemites on Twitter, we heard from a flock of Trump fans trying to claim it was because Trump Jr. wanted to “troll” them, or because he wanted to “keep track” of them. Others tried to argue the Twitter users we identified as racists and antisemites weren’t anything of the sort, just fun guys having fun with other people who like to have fun. (We have some examples of the “funny” tweets these people have been posting here.)

Here’s our screenshot of Trump Jr.’s following list as it appeared yesterday afternoon, showing the two “alt-right” antisemites under discussion, @Ricky_Vaughn99 and @Bidenshairplugs:

But now there’s been a development that destroys any attempts at deflection (reminiscent of the Trump campaign’s attempt to explain away his antisemitic image as simply a “sheriff’s star”): today when we checked Trump Jr.”s following list again, we discovered that sometime after we published our article exposing the antisemites he was following, he… unfollowed them. That’s right, they’re no longer on the list.

And he did this quietly, obviously hoping to cover it up before the media in general picked up on it. After all, at this point the last thing the Trump campaign needs is another antisemitism scandal. I’d love to have heard the discussions that went on between Trump Jr. and other advisers over this; you know there were words.

Needless to say, if Trump Jr. were really following these vile cavemen to “troll” or “keep track” of them, he wouldn’t have silently dropped them from his list. This is the act of a person who was caught doing something he couldn’t defend, and hurriedly tried to hide it before it was noticed more widely.

Ygelsias has a post up on Vox that shows how Trump’s businesses basically were just conduits to paying off his personal debts:

Trump made money in Atlantic City through two primary means. First, he extracted management fees from companies he was involved with, and second, he transferred personal debts to companies he controlled:

The pattern started with his very first Atlantic City venture, a partnership with Harrah’s for which he was paid a $24 million construction management fee.
Over the years, the Times reports, Trump “collected millions of dollars in salary, bonuses and other payments.”
In 1993 the Trump Plaza casino sold more than $100 million in junk bonds, and “more than half of the new money went to pay off Mr. Trump’s unrelated personal loans.”
In 1995 the company staged an IPO, and then a week later “the new company began using some of the almost $300 million it had raised to clear Mr. Trump’s personal debts.”
Trump’s casinos paid $300,000 a year for the right to use Trump’s jet to transport celebrities to gigs.
Trump appears to have bilked the shareholders of Trump casinos and resorts out of the opportunity to share in a $1 million profit related to the sale of shares in Riviera Hotel and Casino, keeping the money for himself instead.
What Trump did not do, according to the Times, was run successful casinos:

“Revenues at other Atlantic City casinos rose 18 percent from 1997 through 2002; Mr. Trump’s fell by 1 percent.”
“Had Mr. Trump’s revenues grown at the rate of other Atlantic City casinos, his company could have made its interest payments and possibly registered a profit.”
The public company never turned a profit, leaving behind a trail of losses for shareholders and bondholders and unpaid bills to contractors and subcontractors.

That’s because, for all the claims you hear about principles, the overriding principle that guides most people appears to be “keep the people who think like me in power.” It’s not really surprising - you can’t accomplish a lot of the goals that people want to achieve through government if you’re not the governing party. Particularly for conservatives, as you can’t lower taxes or force women to have children or keep gay people from getting married or trans folk from using the bathrooms.

Maybe it would be different if we had two functioning parties, but we don’t and haven’t really for a while.

It actually happened once, in 1836. Richard Johnson, Democrat Martin Van Buren’s VP pick, was found to be having an affair with a slave after the election but before the Electoral College met. Virginia’s electors decided they couldn’t be having with that and withheld their support; without their electoral votes, Johnson didn’t have a majority and had to go to the Senate, where he won a 2/3 majority over the main Whig Francis Granger- including Virginia’s senators. (The Whigs ran two different tickets, North and South.)

Which is probably one of the reasons they said they’d never actually prosecuted someone for this kind of thing. The State Department and the FBI have been arguing over what’s classified since this issue rose to the level of “maybe it will take down Clinton.”

They have turned 180 degrees, totally seamlessly.

And people who once called anyone who disagreed with neoconservative foreign policy, or thought maybe Israel should be a little more restrained in their behavior, an anti-Semite, have no problem with obvious in-your-face anti-Semitism.

He had just been tackled. one cop was on his legs the other had his knee on his chest. I think in the video you can hear one of the cops yell “he has a gun!” and then the other draws his gun and says something like “if you move a fucking inch I will shoot you”

Those results are just for the San Diego County part of CA-49. The results for the whole district are Issa 84,626 (50.8%), Applegate 75,828 (45.5%), Wingo 6,087 (3.7%). Still pretty bad for a longtime incumbent.

Looking at other districts, David Valadao only got 54% of the vote in the 21st, Steve Knight got just 48.3% in the 25th (and all Republicans combined for 55.6%), Ken Calvert is under 55% in the 42nd, and Dana Rohrabacher’s at 56.6% in the 48th. Good selection of pickup opportunities for California Democrats.

I don’t think it’s cowering at all. While some of Sanders supporters are clearly nuts, there are a lot of people who believe in his ideals. You can’t simply dismiss it.

The reason that Trumpy Dumpy is infesting the (R) side of the ballot is that Republican politicians, in thrall to the extreme wing of the party, kept making promises and platform commitments that were, as the FBI says, grossly negligent- they knew that they couldn’t be kept under our current system of government, and especially without the White House and control of Congress. I used to be a Republican until 2013- the government shutdown, for reasons not worth going into right now, convinced me that the party was in the wrong. And I live in a state whose governor (until the end of last year) was the personification of this process.

So I hope you can understand why I consider it such a bad idea to make these kinds of pie-in-the-sky promises without a plan to follow through, or without the intention to do so. I hate to see Hillary falling prey to nice-sounding slogans like McCain and Romney did.

I get the frustration with Bernie, believe me, but to pretend that Hillary winning was a clear-cut rejection of every ideal he espoused is equally stupid. I don’t think I’m the only Lizard who agreed with a lot of what he stood for but ultimately decided I liked Hillary better as a candidate, and I’m not horrified to find that my preferred candidate is able to listen and compromise when the ideals are ones that she can agree with. I think that’s actually a sign of maturity, something that I’ll agree Bernie has been lacking. (Along with some of his more fervent supporters but again, they aren’t the majority.)

This is pretty much how I feel. Health care and higher education, specifically, are two invaluable services to which I believe everyone should have access. That’s a 107% increase from present. That exceeds the median wage in Louisiana. There ain’t no way the state’s employers can handle that much of an increase. The record high for the minimum wage was about $10.60 in current dollars in 1968, with a 4% unemployment rate and hundreds of thousands of young men in Vietnam, and hence a VERY tight labor market. We don’t have that situation now.

I think it’s largely because they made underpants-gnome-like promises without any sort of disclosed mechanism for achievement. “Repeal and replace” isn’t a cogent policy position, it’s a lump of woo-woo. “Punish Wall Street” is an emotion, not a proposal. “Recreate white industrial jobs by isolationism or magic” is a dream, not a plan.

A minimum wage bill, even a very aggressive one, is a specific thing that Congress would pass and a President would sign, and then it would roll into effect based on the provisions contained therein. I don’t see that wanting this to happen, even if it’s very unlikely in our current climate, will make Democratic voters particularly keen to vote for an appleheaded vagina mouth troll baby fifteen years down the road.

There are certainly some campaigns that are not about winning. We see that every cycle during presidential elections: Kucinich; Bauer; Santorum; Keyes; Ron Paul. This is actually how first the conservative movement and now the wingularity have shifted the center of the GOP so far to the right. That’s a 107% increase from present. That exceeds the median wage in Louisiana. There ain’t no way the state’s employers can handle that much of an increase. The record high for the minimum wage was about $10.60 in current dollars in 1968, with a 4% unemployment rate and hundreds of thousands of young men in Vietnam, and hence a VERY tight labor market. We don’t have that situation now.

So because nobody bothered to fix what was broken it’s too much to do it? I call bullshit on not being able to handle it. 15 sounds high to me for the entire country. (I live in NYC where 15 is not enough, but perhaps is OK in MIssissippi). I would like to start with something more realistic (like the 10 that Obama suggested) and phase in higher amounts over the next 5 years.

I also think it makes sense to sound somewhat flexible when writing a platform . Give everyone a little room to negotiate.
But I agree that the min wage MUST go up. If the party is willing to support the 15 bucks per hour, they should put it in the platform. Just be ready to defend it. Backing down is always our worst mistake.

Lost in all this talk about the $15 minimum wage is that the change wont be overnight. It will be phased in over time - figure 3-5 years (or more). Stepping up the amount will give businesses time to adapt and pass on costs.

It also means that employees will start to see benefits, but not nearly as fast. They’ll have more disposable income, and rely less on food stamps and other safety net programs to get by.

The federal minimum wage is a tricky issue, I think. 29 states have a higher minimum wage than the federal government (though many have tipped wage scales and some are less than a dollar an hour higher than the federal rate). So the question becomes, how do you get people in California or Massachusetts to go along with something that changes nothing for them, while also convincing Alabama and Mississippi (who have no minimum wage) that it won’t turn their local economies into Greece? And that’s before you get into cost of living issues

She has zero experience - the same as her dad on foreign policy/economics/domestic policy.

Speaking of Ted Cruz, looks like some Cruz delegates are trying to find a way to get Ted’s name into nomination at the RNC. They’re looking for a floor fight, since it only takes the support of delegates from 8 states or territories to nominate someone and Cruz won 10. The plan is to get Cruz nominated from the floor, which would give Cruz a chance to speak at the convention on his own behalf.

It’s exceedingly desperate and Cruz hasn’t signaled that he’s even interested in it at this point, but the #NeverTrump folks are aiming for anything they can hang on to.

The federal minimum wage is a tricky issue, I think. 29 states have a higher minimum wage than the federal government (though many have tipped wage scales and some are less than a dollar an hour higher than the federal rate). So the question becomes, how do you get people in California or Massachusetts to go along with something that changes nothing for them, while also convincing Alabama and Mississippi (who have no minimum wage) that it won’t turn their local economies into Greece? And that’s before you get into cost of living issues

I don’t think you’ll have trouble with CA and MA. Both of those states also pay more taxes than they receive in benefits to help states like AL and MS.

It’s too high to be a plausible bargaining chip; I’m honestly not sure Hillary’s previous proposal of $12 wasn’t too much.

I’m going to vote for Hillary, never fear (although it’s doubtful that it will do any good). It’s just that it’s so frustrating to see my candidate decide not to stand up for herself in this, as she’s done so often in other contexts.

The minimum wage was $1.60 in 1968, or about $10.34 in 2016 US dollars. That’s the highest it’s ever been. It wasn’t raised to $2 until 1974, by which time inflation had knocked it down to about $9 in today’s money.
