I love Courtney Barnett, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. She makes hard-rockin’ music with a great sense of humor, and that’s the way to my heart.

Taken from the LP: “Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit” - out through Milk! Records, House Anxiety/Marathon Artists and Mom+Pop

LYRICS
Oliver Paul, twenty years old, thick head of hair worries he’s going bald. Wakes up at a quarter past nine, fare evades his way down the 96 tram line. Breakfast on the run again, he’s well aware he’s dropping soy linseed Vegemite crumbs everywhere.

Feeling sick at the sight of his computer he dodges his way through the Swanston commuters. Rips off his tie, hands it to a homeless man, sleeping in the corner of a Metro bus stand. He screams “I’m not going to work today! Gonna count the minutes that the trains run late. Sit on the grass building pyramids out of Coke cans.”

Headphone wielding to the Nicholas Building, he trips on a pothole that’s not been filled in. He waits for an elevator, 1 to 9, a lady walks in and waits by his side. Her heels are high and her bag is snakeskin. Hair pulled so tight you can see her skeleton. Vickers perfume on her breath, a tortoise-shell necklace between her breasts. She looks him up and down with a Botox frown, he’s well used to that look by now.

The elevator dings, and they awkwardly step in, their fingers touch on the rooftop button…

“Don’t jump little boy, don’t jump off that roof, you’ve got your whole life ahead of you you’re still in your youth, I’d give anything to have skin like you!”

He said, “I think you’re projecting, the way that you’re feeling, I’m not suicidal just idling insignificantly. I come up here, for perception and clarity, I like to imagine I’m playing Sim City. All the people look like ants from up here, and the wind’s the only traffic you can hear” He said, “All I ever wanted to be was an Elevator Operator can you help me please?!”

“Don’t jump little boy, don’t jump off that roof, you’ve got your whole life ahead of you you’re still in your youth, I’d give anything to have skin like you!”

Carrying on from the discussion downstairs about PolitiFact, Clinton, etc:

I guess what I find most disheartening is that our culture values a simple explanation (TRUE or FALSE) for every situation, every statement or claim, rather than spending time to come to an understanding of whatever is being discussed, to make a more weighted decision (if, indeed, any decision or conclusion is necessary at all.)

In this regards, the need for a simple answer pre-packaged is very much like our society in general, where we want our food pre-packaged and ready-to-eat.

There is an annoying flip side to this as well, where conclusions need to be drawn but aren’t. E.g., the main stream media continues to treat Republicans as if they are a normal political party when all the stories should be about how the GOP is a toxic dumpster fire.

The crime for which he was convicted was having sex with a 16 year old while being age 20.

This particular individual had a huge laundry list of crimes that he’d been convicted of, and was absolutely convinced that it meant that pinning him, Tasing him, and shooting him in the back until dead was the right thing to do. I just can’t even.

I like Courtney Barnett too. Stumbled across her doing a Austin City Limits show. She’s got that something, offhand and easy. One song stayed with me. A cover of another Aussie band You Am I. Heavy Heart

You Am I - Heavy Heart

Then she delivers it here.

Courtney Barnett “Heavy Heart” (You Am I cover)

Yep. I like her too.

Twelve Ways to Upset Your Liberal Xmas Guests
Are your left-leaning family members going to ruin your Christmas? Ruin theirs first!
by Keith Koffler
You know who they are. They’re siblings who believed their professors in college. They’re in-laws you can do nothing about. They are “friends” who secretly think you are a mindless, evil philistine.

These liberals love to ruin your dinner with sanctimony and moral superiority. Well, on the theory that the best defense is a good offense, here are 12 things you can say to pre-empt the inevitable attack.

1.) Did you know that the earth hasn’t really warmed for almost 20 years?

2.) So, how much did your health insurance premiums go up this year?

3.) Would you mind if 20 young, male Syrian refugees moved into a rooming house next door to you and your children?

4.) What’s worse, an 18-minute gap in a tape recording or 30,000 missing emails?

5.) How’s the Obama presidency been working out for black Americans?

6.) Donald Trump is worth $4 billion. How much are you worth?

7.) Who’s smarter, you or Ted Cruz?

8.) What are you doing “owning” on land that belongs to Native Americans?

9.) How’s that whole hopey-changey thing working out now?

10.) Did you know that the immigration enforcement authorities removed 76,000 criminals apprehended at or near the border or other points of entry this year?

11.) Would you rather experience a terrorist attack in a place that allows concealed carry or one that doesn’t?

12.) Merry Christmas!

My father has become a regular Fox news watcher in his advanced age, and can be relied on to repeat whatever spin the broadcast day has delivered.
Tonight at dinner he told me the earth was actually entering a cooling period. It didn’t really “ruin” dinner as that author supposes, but it was sad that he’s now so easily taken in.

I keep my mouth shut on extended family because it is absolutely not worth the effort but if that ever happens with my dad or mom I don’t think I’m going to be able to.

Apparently there is a subculture of men (and some women) who own 1.4-meter or taller silicone female dolls, and treat them as real people. It’s not always a sex thing. The dolls serve as surrogate daughters, girlfriends or companions., and even take them on outings on the subway or to the countryside for photo shoots.

sixthtone.com

The article highlights several Chinese men and their dolls, but it seems these dolls are also popular in Japan, the USA and Europe.

1.) Did you know that the earth hasn’t really warmed for almost 20 years?
No. Please provide evidence.

2.) So, how much did your health insurance premiums go up this year?
Less than it used to.

3.) Would you mind if 20 young, male Syrian refugees moved into a rooming house next door to you and your children?
No more than any other boarding house being next door.

4.) What’s worse, an 18-minute gap in a tape recording or 30,000 missing emails?
Depends on the content and reason for the gap.

5.) How’s the Obama presidency been working out for black Americans?
Probably better than the Bush presidency.

6.) Donald Trump is worth $4 billion. How much are you worth?
Less. In what way is that relevant? Shall we select leaders based on wealth?

7.) Who’s smarter, you or Ted Cruz?
Me.

8.) What are you doing “owning” on land that belongs to Native Americans?
Unfortunately the ownership of land does not stay stable through all of history. Ask the Celts (among others) about that.

9.) How’s that whole hopey-changey thing working out now?
I can only speak for myself, but I’d say ‘well.’

10.) Did you know that the immigration enforcement authorities removed 76,000 criminals apprehended at or near the border or other points of entry this year?
Fascinating fact. Link to source?

11.) Would you rather experience a terrorist attack in a place that allows concealed carry or one that doesn’t?
One that doesn’t.

12.) Merry Christmas!
Thanks. Have a joyous Solstice, yourself.

lifezette.com

Is this the war on war on Christmas?

Because I’m a little bored and haven’t had any beer yet
1. What does “hasn’t REALLY warmed” Is that a scientific measurement?

Factual response: climate.nasa.gov

2. Not by much if at all ncsl.org

Yet for 2016 among the roughly 85 percent of healthcare.gov consumers with premium tax credits, the average monthly net premium increased just $4, or 4 percent, from 2015 to 2016, according to an HHS report.

3. First why would 20 people moving into a house be okay no matter who they are? I’d rather Syrian refugees move in than 20 rednecks flying the Confederate flag and blasting Ted Nugent. And do they not know that many refugees are very educated, and Christian?

4. Hillary is worse than Nixon? I don’t even…

5. Black unemployment rate is at 2008 levels npr.org

But it’s nice to pretend the right wing cares about black people *snicker*

6. His worth is imaginary and tied into real estate deals he inherited from his father as well as other shady dealings. Also the party of Christianity is telling me wealth is a measure of a man? Do they not read the Bible or what?

7. How do you measure, smart? Do you do it like your #6 question and go by net worth just like Jesus would? Cruz was so smart but he couldn’t run a campaign better than Donald Drumpf

8. Owning on land? Speaking of smart, who didn’t pass basic English?

9. Pretty damn well, especially for the educated bloomberg.com

Now how about Congress get to work to help “real America?”

10. That is impossible. I was told the borders are wide open. So how can the DHS apprehend ANYONE at the border? Is the right wing lying to me?

11. Why would that matter? Were there no gun attacks or mass shootings in red states? How is that CCW law doing to bring down Chicago gun violence by the way?

12. Sick burn! Did you know Jesus was a Jew and not even born in December? And what does the Bible say about respecting other beliefs?

On that note with this amount of ignorance, I need a drink.

1.) Did you know that the earth hasn’t really warmed for almost 20 years?

antarctica is melting then why?

2.) So, how much did your health insurance premiums go up this year?

mine went down

3.) Would you mind if 20 young, male Syrian refugees moved into a rooming house next door to you and your children?

no. you live next to a “rooming house”?

4.) What’s worse, an 18-minute gap in a tape recording or 30,000 missing emails?

who cares? let’s talk about your children’s college costs…

5.) How’s the Obama presidency been working out for black Americans?

it seems the are very, very proud of him

6.) Donald Trump is worth $4 billion. How much are you worth?

as much as my spouse and children love me

7.) Who’s smarter, you or Ted Cruz?

you won’t catch me losing arguments with donald trump

8.) What are you doing “owning” on land that belongs to Native Americans?

i was taught in grade school we stole the whole place from them. is that true or isn’t it?

9.) How’s that whole hopey-changey thing working out now?

excuse me what exactly does that mean?

10.) Did you know that the immigration enforcement authorities removed 76,000 criminals apprehended at or near the border or other points of entry this year?

good! so trump is wrong when he says we have no control of our borders?

11.) Would you rather experience a terrorist attack in a place that allows concealed carry or one that doesn’t?

where are all those “good guys with guns” who are supposed to be saving us from gun massacres? also, how do you stop a concealed bomb with a handgun?

12.) Merry Christmas!

merry christmas! why are you looking at me with that weird expression?

My father has become a regular Fox news watcher in his advanced age, and can be relied on to repeat whatever spin the broadcast day has delivered.
Tonight at dinner he told me the earth was actually entering a cooling period. It didn’t really “ruin” dinner as that author supposes, but it was sad that he’s now so easily taken in.

Fear is a feature, not a bug. This is the Fox business model. Their core audience is mainly older, scared, and vulnerable. It is despicable.

Of course. But this just keeps the narrative the same. That those “thugs” deserve it.

And that’ll continue until the until the white community confronts its racism. It literally doesn’t matter what black people do; they’re thugs no matter what in the eyes of a sizable portion of white people.

re: #42 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

Apparently there is a subculture of men (and some women) who own 1.4-meter or taller silicone female dolls, and treat them as real people. It’s not always a sex thing. The dolls serve as surrogate daughters, girlfriends or companions., and even take them on outings on the subway or to the countryside for photo shoots.

sixthtone.com

The article highlights several Chinese men and their dolls, but it seems these dolls are also popular in Japan, the USA and Europe.

That’s kind of sad.

I suspect RBS just grabbed a livestream without necessarily looking at the source too closely. The patriotic eagles for their screengrab is kind of a giveaway that maybe it is not the most neutral source ever.

I have declined to give them any views, personally.

That has been their argument, besides Obama being the cause of “racism” he is also to blame because he wasn’t 100% behind every police officer in every shooting. These are the authoritarians that turn their back on DiBlasio because he had the nerve to tell his kid to respect the police and don’t do anything around them that might bring attention to you.

Semi-automatic? 5.56mm? 3 guesses as to what it is, and the first 2 don’t count. And a 30-round clip would fit perfectly with the model I have in mind.

Also these types of people are blind authoritarians who think questioning (conservative) authority is treason but questioning Democrats is your God given duty. They probably think the stopping of the Mai Lai massacre was a mistake and Guantanamo should be expanded. Anyone who questioned going into Iraq was an anti-American traitor and terrorist sympathizer as well. These people are clinically insane and dream of a day when a military dictatorship runs America and they can machine gun non white Christians in the streets.

Of course, he’s responsible. He’s not like other presidents and entitled to his own opinion. When cops keep shooting black males without having a valid reason, this president isn’t permitted to address the matter. He’s supposed to either keep his mouth shut or ignore the fact that race definitely plays a role in how willing cops are to shoot blacks faster than they do whites. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a retired professional, but if I go into certain neighborhoods here in Macon, GA, cops are called immediately, and I stand a good chance of being arrested, even though I might be there to visit a former co-worker. This is what life is like for millions of POC on a daily basis. If anyone says these shootings don’t have a racial component, s/he is lying or doesn’t want to admit that a double standard exists in America in regard to how law enforcement deals with POC. Even black police officers are more suspicious of blacks than they are of whites.

re: #73 Big Beautiful Door

That’s kind of sad.

Indeed. And it may be a byproduct of the one-child policy and male-child preference in China, which has skewed the male-female ratio to something like 130:100, with the gap increasing over time. There aren’t enough women around. Most parents of teenagers actively forbid boy-girl relationships, ostensibly to foster better study habits, so teens are denied chances to deal with each other romantically. It can continue even in college. Then parents want them to hurry up, find a partner, get married and have a kid or two. Family pressure is really overwhelming once a girl reaches 25 or a boy 27.

But another factor, I suspect, is the unwillingness or inability of Chinese people, especially men, to discuss feelings of sadness or isolation or vulnerabllity, because that would entail losing face. Any bad feelings or emotions are internalized, leading to bizarre and sometimes dangerous behavior.

That last one right there tells me Castile was more than a food worker. He was a teacher and surrogate parent. One of the most powerful skills of a great teacher is to remember the names of their students, because it shows the teacher cares.

The staff of a school are often as influential on a child’s life as their teachers. It can extend into college. I have very fond memories of the custodian of our dorm freshman year, Jim Green, who addressed every student as “young man” or “young lady,” and probably had to put up with all kinds of shit in the 30 or 40 years he worked there.

Our current media and political atmosphere raises the ability to turn things into stark dichotomies regardless of how complex the issue is as a virtue rather than a vice, as well as discouraging any attempts to handle more than one idea or concept at a time. The GOP and their media shills have successfully turned the idea of being able to walk and chew bubble gum into a negative, and nuance into a four letter word

And this shit….ugh. That’s the thing that makes me hang my head the most. It’s like they absolutely define themselves solely on the basis of how much the can piss off the ‘other’ and the ‘enemy’.
