This is really freaky. Not sure I want to speculate yet but I wonder if it’s somebody trying to cause further mayhem.

I said this downstairs, but given the number of shots being fired in the video downstairs, I think there’s a very real possibility the gunman is targeting black people, not cops. But I’m not jumping to conclusions quite yet.

Why would we be happy cops are getting shot? When have we ever said anything to indicate that we’re anti-police? Oh, right, we simply don’t accept their version of officer-involved shootings at face value. Oops, our bad, guess we should start saying “fuck da police” now.

BLM protesters wearing tactical gear and using assault rifles? Something doesn’t add up. Some angry person wanting to slander the BLM protesters, or just target cops for a specific reason?

Also this boingboing.net is damn scary if true. Government secretly spying on journalists with zero oversight.

Today the President posted this message to all Americans. Tonight one of the worst things that could happen has occurred. Whoever can go from this statement seeking calm and understanding to bloodshed, regardless of race, creed or politics is a horribly warped and damaged person.

I may just be logging off for the evening. I don’t know any more. I just don’t know.

Today, President Obama posted the following message on Facebook:

“All Americans should be deeply troubled by the fatal shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. We’ve seen such tragedies far too many times, and our hearts go out to the families and communities who’ve suffered such a painful loss.

“Although I am constrained in commenting on the particular facts of these cases, I am encouraged that the U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation in Baton Rouge, and I have full confidence in their professionalism and their ability to conduct a thoughtful, thorough, and fair inquiry.

“But regardless of the outcome of such investigations, what’s clear is that these fatal shootings are not isolated incidents. They are symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve.

“To admit we’ve got a serious problem in no way contradicts our respect and appreciation for the vast majority of police officers who put their lives on the line to protect us every single day. It is to say that, as a nation, we can and must do better to institute the best practices that reduce the appearance or reality of racial bias in law enforcement.

“That’s why, two years ago, I set up a Task Force on 21st Century Policing that convened police officers, community leaders, and activists. Together, they came up with detailed recommendations on how to improve community policing. So even as officials continue to look into this week’s tragic shootings, we also need communities to address the underlying fissures that lead to these incidents, and to implement those ideas that can make a difference. That’s how we’ll keep our communities safe. And that’s how we can start restoring confidence that all people in this great nation are equal before the law.

“In the meantime, all Americans should recognize the anger, frustration, and grief that so many Americans are feeling — feelings that are being expressed in peaceful protests and vigils. Michelle and I share those feelings. Rather than fall into a predictable pattern of division and political posturing, let’s reflect on what we can do better. Let’s come together as a nation, and keep faith with one another, in order to ensure a future where all of our children know that their lives matter.”

The right wing are hoping really bad this is BLM black men trying to shoot cops. It will justify race war.

Of course, if you’re white and rail against government oppression, shooting cops is not really that far our there.

Which means the hyper nationalist patriot movement and racism is fundamentally linked.

Sounds like a good choice. The shooter could be black, white, or the Zodiac Killer. We just don’t know. Crazy does not know racial, cultural or religious boundaries. All will become clearer with time.

I’m not going to speculate what’s ongoing here, because shit is terrifying enough and fanning the flames of the current situation without proper knowledge will just make things worse.

What I will end up speculating that regardless of the truth of what’s happening right now, I expect this to be used as a bludgeon against Black Lives Matter and black people in general, as well as to push away any sympathy and empathy engendered by the two police shootings over the last couple days. Because again, anything to make the ‘other’ feel like they don’t belong and don’t deserve treatment like actual people.

The military was in constant war, even though it was much less soldiers doing fighting or occupying. I can’t remember a single decade when the military wasn’t deployed somewhere. I’m sure in the 1800’s sometime.

My comment was only to point out that it isn’t just nutjob libertarian sovcit that have military training a lot of minorities do too thanks to Uncle Sam and these endless occupations Bush got the country into. But what can you do, with us or with the terrorists. And now we get more blowback each day…

May not mean much, but my sister lived next to a family of cops (and one firefighter) in Chicago. They were Daley guys long ago, but now perceive Democrats as pussies (soft on crime; hard on police); they hate Obama; but they don’t want guns flowing uncontrollably. They were really nice guys to us. That’s all I’m going to say. I just picked this up in conversations over the years when one of them would come over to chat or help us move something heavy.

Dallas is the same way.

This is not a situation where cops in riot gear were throwing tear gas. There was no confrontation and escalation with protestors. These are our friends.

Some of the gangs have merged and wearing blue and red is their gang affiliation showing that. Crips and bloods in a lot of cities have been pushed out by Cartels and Asian/Eastern European mobsters so the black gangs unite. Jesus christ. I didn’t check the news for a bit and the world goes nuts.

- Open carry is fucking stupid and this is one reason why.

- Even as spread out as Texas is, you don’t need to be a military genius to shoot up a crowd with an AR. People gussy up their ARs like fancy pickup trucks here. Any idiot could have walked to their vantage point & done this (see: open carry is stupid).

- DART cops? Seriously? Those people keep the rail line safe… This terrorist cockhead didn’t even target regular PD.

- Fuck this state. Seriously. I almost got out this weekend (friend & I had to walk away from a house because seller wouldn’t concede on the 15K worth of rewiring it needed, else I’d be packing right now). I can’t wait to see the idiotic bullshit spewing from our so-called “governor” and the mob of cretinous wall-eyed paint-licking garbage toads we’ve sent to D.C.

He’s not a fucking idiot. But I agree with jaunte, they don’t want the attention that this would bring. Every city (mostly medium to somewhat large) I’ve lived in in the last 10 years has been shown to be a node of the drug-distribution network with some gang activity. We hate Trump, but he’s right that the drugs are largely coming from the Mexican cartels. That creates armed criminals here hired by them who make sure the drugs get into the cities (which means that however you define it, many small to large cities have some gang element). Competition is most fierce in south and west Chicago, the main hub. That’s why there are endless killings.

Group narcissism focused on race.
Group narcissism is like vanilla narcissism, only the malignant self-love is focused to a group one belongs to, like national, religious, racial or political.
Only problem is that only the race case is barely recognized, the other three get mistaken as patriotism, party loyalty or devotion.

Oh, absolutely! But your first instinct has gotta be to drop the gun, tear off the shirt, and bug out.

But you can’t responsibly drop the gun, so you have to walk up to an officer while you’ve still got it slung, because you can’t have it in your hands. And do it right after some fuckheads have killed 4 cops, and you know you’ve been identified as a suspect.

re: #347 Blind Frog Belly White

Does it, though? Why?

To expand on this, how much planning does it take, in a state with open carry, to get a long rifle downtown? None. You don’t even have to conceal in a box.

How much planning does it take to spot elevated, accessible spots overlooking an urban street? Not much. Just look up.

You might choose a parking garage, because they’re big and open and you can tell the other guy to go to the other end.

So, really how much advance planning is needed?

It’s rare that someone who isn’t known would be shot for wearing rival colors. There is usually some connection to the gangs, as you mentioned. If gangs in most areas just started popping average citizens the cops would rain down holy hell. It just doesn’t happen to the average Joe or Jane Citizen.

Not at all. The Venn diagram of “angry dude”, “AR-15 owner”, and “Knows downtown Dallas” is pretty large. You might need a little local knowledge of which garages overlook which streets, which you could pick up in a half-hour walk. DFW lends itself to this sort of shooting pretty well.

If I suddenly decided to kill cops at a protest, I could come up with a workable plan in minutes, and I don’t even work downtown.

However, a few key differences would limit damage here. For one, the events like Utoya don’t happen quite out as in the boondocks here as they did there. Not only that, but the Norweigan Government was crippled by the bombing which disputed most government ministries, and created confusion, and a weakening of command and control. In the US, even on a city level, things tend to be hardened, which prevents the sort of thing that caused so much chaos and confusion there.

And I say that as someone who lost family in the Attacks in Norway. I am still angry at conservatives in the US for it, 5 years later in just a few weeks. It has dulled, and certain people who are conservative I have given leeway, but I still have issues with it.

Walsh has always come across to me as someone who is good at getting mess started but would be MIA when those he incites take action and bullets start flying. If he thinks that most of us blacks want a race war, he hasn’t been paying attention. We want to get along with our fellow citizens Iike those in other groups in this country. I come into contact with a lot of other blacks, many of them I don’t know personally. We discuss a lot of things, but starting a race war isn’t one of them.

As far as I can see, from the days of the white slaveowners right on down through the Klan to Charlie Manson and certainly to the present day of right-wing militia crazies, American history is full of white people howling about imminent race war. Black people doing so are extremely rare, if they exist at all.

They filled us in on what is happening in Dallas, and could not believe that someone would shoot at police officers - none of them are blaming the protesters, they were simply stunned. The drivers’ were convinced someone is trying to stir trouble with the protesters and the police and are not part of either group.

As the shooting started, the police realised that they specifically were the targets and not the protesters at all.

Not everything has to be inspired by DAESH. More likely, if these people are targeting the police for the two shootings by cops, they’re just a group that planned something. I do kind of wonder if they had some kind of inside knowledge on the protest coordination that was mentioned to have occurred between the police and protesters.

Or a Klan fanatic, or a white supremacist group … the police chief says it appears to be at least four shooters. He also seems to think there must have been some knowledge of the march to have planned such a thing.

Right, but the race of the three in custody should be pretty straightforward to determine, even if they don’t know it for the one in the garage.

I missed the beginning of the press conference though, and it’s possible that that information was given there. I doubt it, given that I haven’t seen anything on Twitter, but in situations like this I try to be clear about what I can speak to with knowledge and what I can’t.

I don’t see how it changes much. Sandy Hook didn’t change anything. If it’s black people, then the whites will go on hating black people. If it’s white people, lots of thoughts and prayers will be offered for those affected by these extremists.

Brian Williams calling it “fiendish” especially in regard to how quickly it was executed. Rep. Lee concurs. She also opines (but does not assert) that outside agitators are likely the cause (and notes she was marching this evening in a protest in DC).

My first imagining (granted I have a vivid imagination)… is neo-Nazis trying to frame BLM for attacking cops, in hopes that the cops would retaliate against the protesters.

(Maybe because I’ve been watching “Aquarius”, a TV drama with David Duchovney as a cop investigating the Manson family the year before the Tate/LoBianco killings).

Brian Williams now interviewing a protester. He has been in several protests before, and when the shooting started a block ahead of him and people started running, he directed running protesters away from the apparent centre of the shooting.

He points out the officers with the protesters were in that block ahead, and could not believe when he realised the shooters were targeting the police. He points out the police were being peaceful themselves before the shooting started, and ensuring the march was secure. They stayed on the periphery of the march after the speakers.

The protester being interviewed says he saw one protester bring a rifle (open carry state and all), and when the shooting started he immediately gave his rifle to the police to ensure there was no confusion on his part (the police initially ran his picture as a suspect but retracted that statement, so expect to see his photo up on wingnuttia sites as one of the shooters).

Brian Williams noted that information (about the gun being turned over immediately) was confirmed from multiple sources (naming them).

I was surprised when I realized a couple years ago that many right-wingers think the things they saw in the 24 series were real. I can’t see Keifer Sutherland fighting real terrorists, I just can’t. Now, if anyone wants him to sing, he can do that. He was here in my city in Middle GA performing at a local venue a couple weeks ago.

I don’t care if you use your gun to shoot rattlesnakes in your ranch.
But if you’re gonna appear in a public square with your rifle, you’re an ass and maybe close to a sociopath, and shouldn’t have the gun in the first place.
IMHO.

Well, there would be a bit of difference if I were walking from my house to the river with my shotgun to go hunting (a very rural area and a village of 128 people) versus open-carrying a rifle or pistol in the middle of a metropolis.

It’s a goof. It was directed by John Frankenheimer - right wing nut job. Militia groups were big in the Pacific Northwest robbing banks and stuff like that. They murdered a Alan Berg - Jewish talk show host. The movie on that is Talk Radio, which is based on Alan Berg.

Actually, Red Dawn was written and directed by John Milius, who is also a RWNJ.

Not one article has mentioned that this guy had to be selling illegal bootleg cd’s and movies. I guess it’s not relevant, but it is funny when they call him a cd salesman. It doesn’t sound so good if they call him a bootlegger. The RIAA and MPAA are outraged.

Local TV station just got finished interviewing Mark Hughes (the guy in camo who was open-carrying a rifle at the protest). There has been video relased showing him handing his weapon over to Dallas police immediately after the firing started and getting a business card from one of the officers. Later on, they posted his picture online as a “person of interest” even though they already had his weapon - and proceeded to interrogate him accusing him of killing police - up until the video showing his cooperating with police surfaced. Dallas PD still confiscated his clothing and his weapon and are refusing to return either to him, and are not even acknowledging his cooperation, or apologizing for detaining him unneccessarily.

621
Anymouse  Jul 8, 2016 • 12:06:27am

An analyst at MSNBC notes that when the firing started, the police did what they are trained to do: Get the parts of the car that are hardest to fire through (the engine block, &c) between them and the gunfire.

Because of the elevation of the shooters (and the different positions), that strategy was not helpful: Gunfire coming in from different directions would negate that strategy.

(The analyst served in the Iraq War and noted this was one strategy of insurgents to attack troops or police, for the same reason.)

KXAS in Dallas is reporting the suspect in the parking garage “was neutralised.” They do not say whether he killed himself or they did. Police are now packing up guns and equipment, so it would appear that is over.

re: #453 Nyet

True, but ISIS did issue statements to the effect that BLM protests should be used to sow chaos.

I’ve been lurking since around midnight when I woke up and saw BREAKING news about this from the BBC show up in the push alerts of my iPad. Within the first hour I began wondering if Da’esh my have a hand in it, even if indirectly.

They’ve gotten really good at recruiting online and I assume that they, like AQ before them, also use their websites (and perhaps social media) to publish instructions on how to carry out terrorist attacks, especially mass shootings, which seem to be all the rage at the moment—not surprising since guns are so easily accessible.

I mean, one wouldn’t necessarily need to be Muslim to take advantage of the info the terrorist groups provide. I’m thinking specifically of an “enemy of my enemy is my friend” type of mentality. There are elements both here & abroad that would love to see the U.S. descend into chaos and become a first-world failed state.

Also, when this kind of crap goes down, how do we know who’s behind the (non-official) tweets we see? We don’t—it could be anyone trying to make a bad situation worse and attempting to turn people/groups against each other.

I agree. They set up a “kill box”.

This also—urban combat is something groups like Da’esh have a lot of experience in.

It is pretty sick if you are not into body horror. I posted it yesterday when we were discussing whether the Trump family members all fuck each other, because it sure seems that way. ;)

In specific, I don’t want people to die from violence that is the product of assumptions about inherent threat and collective guilt.

Mercy and compassion are not zero-sum.

I mourn for these officers and their loved ones.

The narrative has been set: “Obama posted this message saying (I didn’t read it but basically it musta said) all cops are murderers and then somebody understood that it’s okay to go out shoot down a bunch of cops. Because BLM hates police and wants to kill them all, and I endorse this message.”

I was sure getting fed up with all the European Cup nonsense here in Europe, but boy, am I glad to be an expat right now…

re: #714 goddamnedfrank

Why is this tweet still up? Cleared hours ago, just reckless as all fuck to continue mislabeling him as a suspect.

because, according to the RW narrative, he is just the sort of fellow who would be inspired by Obama to go on a police shooting spree…because Black Lives Matter but Police Lives obviously Don’t.

This can only get uglier, regardless of who the shooter turns out to be…

Of course a human being much over eight feet in height would risk breaking bones is they stood up.

There’a a reason Apatosaurs and elephants have the same body shape. It’s the only shape that can support such massive weight on land.
