Dallas Standoff Over, Details Emerging About Shooters

Bad craziness in Dallas
US News • Views: 68,698

There isn’t much verified information yet on the identities of the suspects in tonight’s nightmarish shootings in Dallas, but CNN has an account from an eyewitness who described the attack on police as “an execution.”

The assailant got out of a Chevy Tahoe SUV wearing what Dejesus described as tactical clothing.

“Man had a rifle, AR-15, clear as day. Pretty big magazine. You can see towards the end of the video here that he goes ahead and drops a few mags.”

“He had multiple pockets, he had three to four pockets in front of his pants. He definitely looked like he was wearing something in his shirt.”

“He got out of there, walked over to the pillar, put a magazine in and started firing.”

“It did look planned. He knew where to stand. He had ammo ready.”

“They weren’t short mags. They were high-capacity magazines.”

Right wingers on Twitter are already blaming the shootings on Black Lives Matter before there’s any evidence for it — because that’s what they do. For example, Breitbart “News” propagandist Milo Yiannopoulos:

Just FYI, there are a bunch of racist Twitter accounts, most with names pretending to be radio stations - their call letters include “HH” and their frequency including 14 and/or 88 - that are tweeting that the attackers are various Klan/neo Nazi/racist media figures.

It’s a hoax. I have no idea what they think they’re doing, but it’s a hoax.

One thing’s for sure: no matter what race the attackers turn out to be, the politicals in Dallas are shitting themselves right now trying to figure out how to release the news.

It might be that they know, or suspect, that the murderers come from their own ranks and are trying to release fake news so as to bury the anticipated facts in a pile of discredited nonsense.

Tim Wise is an anti-racist activist, by the way, not an “ex-Breitbart writer.” These people are sick in the head.

They’re tying to discredit liberals by getting them to repeat that Sam Hyde was involved in every incident. It’s just this weird thing they do, create some fake accounts, spam that shit out, wash rinse repeat.

The narrative has been set: “Obama posted this message saying (I didn’t read it but basically it musta said) all cops are murderers and then somebody understood that it’s okay to go out shoot down a bunch of cops. Because BLM hates police and wants to kill them all, and I endorse this message.”

Once this gets sent around enough in its various iterations, facts will bounce off it like bullets off of Kevlar.

Two of the suspects in custody were witnessed climbing into a black Mercedes with a camouflaged bag before speeding off. They were apprehended in the Oak Cliff area, a suburb southwest of Dallas.

Kind of odd, in a way, for gunmen to behave this way if they were at all suicidal.

And sure enough, the WaPo comments (up to 3.5k by now) are full of stupid ugliness, even though the story clearly points out that:

So far, no evidence has surfaced of protester involvement in the deadly assault or of any connection between the protest and the killings.

Besides which, the shooters, in the unlikely event they were BLM members, would be shooting into their own people. One lady got hit in the leg by a round. Milo’s tweet makes no sense given that situation.

The BBC reports that the three suspects still alive are refusing to cooperate with police. This has the aroma of sov cit, militia or neo-Nazi involvement, not BLM.

re: #8 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

It has a mercenary flavor to me. By whom and for what purpose I do not know. Pretty much any violence-predisposed group can do something like this.

I’m still more disturbed by the widely promulgating memes of the gun-loving hate-right who are really trying to pin this on the people who were “protesting”.

Some media stories are being very careful with their headlines, clearly delineating between snipers and the people who were at the peaceful protest earlier.

However, other media outlets, like Murdoch’s NYPost, jump on the flame-fanning early.

Since I can’t sleep, here’s some info on Oak Cliff, emphasis mine:

Oak Cliff: Demographics

Prior to neighborhood desegregation, Oak Cliff was predominantly white. Many neighborhoods in the Oak Cliff area, especially the most southern portions, were targeted for desegregation. As was typical of desegregation in the country, many all-white neighborhoods transitioned to Black and Mexican neighborhoods due to white migration.

In 2001 Jim Schutze of the Dallas Observer referred to northern Oak Cliff as “Dallas’ own Jerusalem, where various ethnicities choose to live close to each other and not get along.”

re: #8 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

My first impression on hearing this was the same as when I heard about Oklahoma City. This was likely done by alt-right Americans.

It’s target selection. If D’aesh or some other foreign terror group could strike in the US it would be at something closer to the heart of America, as they did on 9/11.

Shooting up a fairly minor protest in Dallas reeks of ‘local boys’. (said with a fake Southern accent)

Yes, but the likelihood IMO is for the perps to be alt-right. Target selection tells a lot about a group’s strategy and this horrific event seems suited for the American alt-right.

When you have enough groups on both any side of an issue who feel they can benefit from terror and violence, you basically have the same situation you see all over the Middle East…right here in America.

Ia! Ia! Trump Ftaghn! (née Sophist)  Jul 8, 2016 • 3:44:19am

This really doesn’t seem like the work of Daesh. They usually (always?) go for maximum body count, and there was a crowd of civilians standing right there. Also, the fact that they tried to escape rather than continuing killing for as long as possible doesn’t seem to fit, either. The choice of targets and methods seems to me to indicate some sort of specifically anti-government ideology.

25
Pawn of the Oppressor  Jul 8, 2016 • 3:52:44am

I always understood Oak Cliff to be a Hispanic war zone by night. It’s been a no-go area for as long as I’ve lived here. It’s a bit like saying “down on Harry Hines” means prostitution, even though HH was “cleaned up” 20 years ago. Oak Cliff supposedly was an upscale neighborhood back in the 60’s but it’s basically a dump now.

It doesn’t mean anything investigatively though, you can pass through any area on the highways here.

The media scare word is “snipers” but this looks like a group effort ambush so far. Domestic terrorism, IMO, perps unknown at this time. Sounds like some group who planned & wanted to kill cops & decided to act because of the news.

re: #24 Donnie With The Good Hair (AKA Sophist)

It doesn’t seem like Da’esh, but we can’t rule them out. They don’t have the strength in numbers or weaponry to take on the U.S. mano-a-mano, but they can provide assistance to radical groups in the form of terrorism & urban warfare expertise. Such a temporary alliance with one or more extremist groups in the U.S. would allow them to increase distrust among groups that already view each other with fear/dislike/suspicion by pitting them against each other, causing civil unrest and/or violent upheaval.

A country in severe domestic crisis wouldn’t be nearly as formidable an opponent as a unified one. The bonus for them is they could weaken us without risking a single fighter. Too far-fetched & complicated? Maybe, maybe not.

Anyway, it’s all speculation at this point—it would be irresponsible not to speculate. //

But the First Amendment protects anti-police brutality protests which aren’t going to stop just because of what happened in Dallas. Many of us are sick and tired of the gunning down/killings of Black peoples by cops and we have a right to protest those killings. Period.

We have the right to protest, but the climate definitely impacts the tactic’s effectiveness, at least in the short term. The cost/benefit equation changes.

I find it truly messed up that a lot of the same people who are losing their shit over the police being shot and/or killed are the same ones who advocate against a “tyrannical government”. That’t their reasoning for being armed to the teeth. Now, I ask you, if they were to have their way and they could or would carry out a government overthrow, who would they be shooting at if their revolution came to pass? Umm, Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

We know literally nothing about the shooter(s) yet and I’m already seeing “Black Live Murder” on Facebook and other places. This shit needs to stop. I fear however that the standard ways of handling bullies and instigators aren’t going to work with the mess that’s been created. It used to be that a bit of public humiliation and ridicule, non acceptance of assholes and so on was enough to at least tamp that shit down some. This is now like closing the barn door, not only after the horses have run out, but while the barn is on fire.

What else is left to say on a day like this? Plenty. Cops were murdered just as surely as black men were murdered by cops. You can protest and demand justice in both without being cynical or hypocritical.

Justice. Only justice shall thou pursue.

Cops do dangerous work, and they fall in the line of duty every year. It also happens that far fewer have died in the line of duty in recent years than during the 1970s-1990s. Less crime has something to do with it, as does tactics and training. Events in Texas were the deadliest day for law enforcement since 9/11. Who, what, and why are still unknown here, but it wont stop people from speculating as to why.

Cops also engage in racial profiling and some take those behaviors to extremes that lead to excessive force and deadly force use against suspects, or just folks pulled over for a broken taillight - or no particular reason at all, and are gunned down. That’s a gross miscarriage of justice that requires a holistic approach to fixing because it means not only better training for cops, but rolling back profiling, addressing the way cops investigate themselves, how prosecutors wink and nod in favor of law enforcement, and how even juries are reluctant to return verdicts against cops. The deck is stacked against justice when a black person is killed by a cop for no reason - even when there’s video of the incident.

The Founders would weep over the state of the nation. I think they would think that the cultural/political failures to address gun violence would shock them to the core, as would the fallout from the 2A, which was written for a completely different era to address completely different failings of governments at the time.

They would weep over the cultural rot of the GOP and their know-nothing anti-science rheotric that leads the GOP down a dark path.

I think they’d be horrified at the NRA, and their inability to see the extremism that they instill.

I think they’d scratch their heads over the open carry nonsense, especially since Americans are generally less likely to be victims of crime than ever, and that your chances of being shot go up the more you are in contact with guns (self-inflicted, accidental, domestic violence, etc).

The events of the past 48 hours should shock the conscience, but it wont change a damn thing. That’s the most infuriating thing of all.

Cops were killed in Dallas and have been killed elsewhere, and it didn’t spur changes in the gun laws.
Rep Giffords was nearly assassinated. No change.
Columbine. VA Tech. Binghamton. Arbys. Sandy Hook. Everywhere you look, mass shootings, spree killings, serial killings, and the random everyday gun violence isn’t sufficient to force change. The GOP/NRA feels it too soon to act, but when is the right time to act? For the GOP/NRA, it is never. They let the butcher’s bill grow through their obstructionism/absolutist positions.

Reagan was nearly assassinated, and for a brief moment, gun laws were changed, but the pushback has been even stronger - with the NRA moving to an absolutist position.

It is past time to act, and the proposed changes to gun laws individually wont prevent this incident or that incident, but it could reduce future shootings. As a whole, the gun laws need to be strengthened, and the AWB should be restored, because there are just some kinds of guns that don’t belong in hands of civilians. They serve no purpose other than to kill people.

Other nations have banned guns and imposed strict gun control and don’t have nearly the per capita firearms violence we have here in the US. I’m talking about OECD countries - peer nations. I’m talking Japan. I’m talking Australia. I’m talking Germany and France and Israel.

It doesn’t prevent all mass shootings or terrorism, but none of those countries has the level of gun violence on a daily basis as we have here.

That gun violence has a cost - in law enforcement, in criminal justice/incarceration, and in health care costs. That’s a societal burden that is unsustainable.

And it’s heartbreaking for anyone directly touched by the gun violence.

Police chief David Brown has said that the suspect who was shooting at police, and with whom police were negotiating, told police some of his motives.

In Dallas police chief David Brown’s words:

The suspect said he was upset about Black Lives Matter. He said he was upset about the recent police shootings. The suspect said he was upset at white people the suspect said he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers.”

He didn’t say he hated BLM at all. He was upset about it, which looks to me like anger about how it was being misrepresented.

Maybe, but the context sounded, to me at least, like he wasn’t really pleased with the tactics BLM was using (peaceful protest, bringing attention to the issue, etc) and he decided to take matters into his own hands. I am often wrong, but that was my take away. He wasn’t happy with the cops or the BLM movement either. Frustration and anger with no foreseeable path forward can lead to a sense of “fuck it, I am going to show the motherfuckers”.

Hopefully other suspects will be found and a clearer picture will emerge.

The situation with the NPR channel on 122 is complicated. The local NPR stations that pay most of the costs of the NPR news operation don’t want the big newsmagazine shows, Morning Edition and All Things Considered, to be available anywhere but on their own stations, and so those shows don’t appear on Sirius XM 122. Well to some degree last night in Dallas, right up to around 9:00 PM when the shooting started. The Dallas police actually planned to be seen as cooperative with the protest. They dressed in regular uniforms not riot gear and they didn’t have armored vehicles lining the street like Ferguson and some other cities.

Sure, but “they” and “their”. Multiple people.

A lot of people still think that party primaries are some sort of democratic election. They are not at all, they are closer to a marketing survey to see which of the candidates would perform the best in the general.

Votes are not binding, the party can elect to change voting and nominating rules at any time. Parties tend not to, because they know that it would generally damage the party’s reputation for fairness and transparency.

But nothing requires them to do so, or even to hold primaries or caucuses in the first place.

re: #141 ipsos

The situation with the NPR channel on 122 is complicated. The local NPR stations that pay most of the costs of the NPR news operation don’t want the big newsmagazine shows, Morning Edition and All Things Considered, to be available anywhere but on their own stations, and so those shows don’t appear on Sirius XM 122. Which is a shame this morning, because they’ve been doing very level-headed coverage.

Personally, I gave up on news on Sirius. I mostly listen to the Business channel 111. It’s really, really good.

My husband and I were driving to Chicago the weekend that the Boston bombing was happening (a 7 hour drive). We spent the entire time listening to the live coverage of the brothers grim right through to the baby grim being captured in the boat. It was like listening to radio coverage from some action movie.

That was a night that will forever be in our memories.

Ugh. I should stay away from social media (and some members of my family) today. I’m from Dallas and my heart is broken. If I still lived in Dallas, there is a very good chance I would have been at that protest last night. I posted this on FB and a friend responded, “Fuck guns!” My cousin’s kid responded with “Lol!!! My daughter will sure as hell have a gun! And she’ll know how to work it too! Just like my parents raised me!! It’s NOT the guns!!!! It’s the CRAZY ASS, HEARTLESS PEOPLE OPERATING THE GUNS!!!!!!
How is that not noticeable!?”

Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck. FUCK. I don’t wanna fight with my family over this shit.

I’m doing the same thing you are. I’m not from Dallas, but I took one spin through my FB feed and saw one of my cousins is full “Black Lives Matter are terrorists” mode.

I’m trying to cut her some slack as her son just became a cop, but I’ve been listening to that side of family’s hard-wired racism for far too long. One other person in that family was a cop years ago, and the only time I ever talked to him about it, he was absolutely unapologetic about harassing black people.

I should note that he had to leave the force because his car got firebombed, in retaliation for busting someone with political connections. This guy is a perfect example of my conflicted feelings towards law enforcement.

But getting back to your original premise: yeah, I’m staying off of social media for a while. Shit’s getting all 1968 out there. I have a feeling both conventions are going to be violent nightmares*.

*The Democratic convention has a less of a chance, but that assumes that the Bernie Bros grow the fuck up in the next few weeks. Don’t see that happening. They should also research the Philly police department’s ongoing love affair with beating protesters within an inch of their lives.

This seems to be a recurring pattern. The lady in TX who was a fierce gun advocate and killed her daughters. The countless parents who leave guns where little kids can get their hands on them, the neighbor who snaps and kills another neighbor over a property line dispute, the list is endless.

When I was a kid my grandma used to tell us that whatever higher power you beleive in (she was notoriously neutral about religion and not religious), life will send you messages. If you ignore those messages they get bigger and bigger til you either get dragged down with them or solve the problem.

First graders shot in the face in their classrooms were ignored. A sitting congress member shot in the head meeting constituents didn’t get through. Black men getting shot by police while not committing any serious crime means nothing. A Texas mother kills her daughters to get even with her husband over a pending divorce was just brushed off. Kids walking through the halls of a Colorado high school shooting classmates horrified us for 5 minutes and was forgotten. So I wonder what it’s going to take before we collectively say “oh, THAT’S what’s wrong” and we DO FUCKING SOMETHING? So, does it mean that someone has to walk into Congress and open fire, or maybe an NRA convention? Would that even register? WTF America? What. The. Fuck?

Maybe I’m a naive optimist, but I think we will see that kind of cooperation again - from the police forces who aren’t jerks. The forces that were jerks before will be more so, with what they consider new justification. But Dallas PD was there, and knows that the people they were walking with had nothing to do with it. They may not be jumping up and down for the opportunity to attend another protest, but how they act toward the protesters won’t change… I hope so much.

I, too, am very conflicted about police. I grew up with great respect for police. I am from the Officer Friendly period. I never had a bad relationship with police or any cop.

That said, I am white.

What conflicts me is that police have an incredibly difficult job. They put their lives on the line literally every working moment. That said, they should - but don’t - police their own. They do too little concerning psych evaluations for suitability to the role, they have that thick blue line where they protect their own instead of policing and getting rid of bad cops, and these two things make it hard for me to support police as I used to. When you repeatedly watch cops killing people (almost exclusively black people - but people is the key word!) and then circle the wagons around those who did the killing, how does any human being with a conscience get behind them?

The cop in SC who shot the guy who was getting his wallet - on orders to do so - as well as the guy killed in MN just two days ago…they were both terrified cops which makes them extremely unsuited to police work where that work includes having a gun. Both of these cops are cowards and being a cop takes Sullenberger level nerves of steel.

This is all so depressing.

The thing that came out of Ferguson is that most prosecutors have a working relationship with the police to obtain indictments against people the police have arrested.

However, that relationship is totally at odds with a prosecutor seeking to obtain an indictment against a policeman.

There is an inherent conflict of interest here, and we need to devise means of overcoming it.

re: #205 The Vicious Babushka

Based on what evidence actually?

We know the statistics of how many cops die in the line of duty, including those who are killed by suspects/perpetrators. Since 2005, 539 out of 1466 line of duty deaths were by firearms.

We only barely scratch the surface of how many people are killed by cops annually, but it’s over 1,000 based on CDC stats and FBI stats (there’s incomplete stats of how many are killed by cops annually).

We also know that blacks are far more likely to be stopped than whites (profiling). The MO AG made this abundantly clear in their annual reports pre/post Ferguson - that’s typical behavior by law enforcement, and by no means exclusive to MO.

We also know that cops are far more likely to use deadly force against blacks than whites (again profiling and racism comes into play).

So, taken together, Ben’s pushing baffling BS, which is exactly what he wants to do.

This is just personal opinion and nothing more.

Watch the way this is unfolding. Look at Sessions (TX) words of kumbayah and togetherness, we need to be together not divided, and making sure that we don’t jump to conclusions. The news people are unwilling to make guesses about anything (which they always do) especially whether the shooters were people of color, Muslims, etc.

Has this stopped them in the past? The Boston bomber was originally described as a “light skinned black male” before anything was known.

Now they are on and on about “wanted to kill white police officers” but he was against the BLM movement. He also made sure the cops knew that he “wasn’t part of a group or movement” and he “was alone in his actions” which to me is a little protesth too loudly.

I am going to be very surprised if this not an anti-government/SovCit/Militia thing.

Having grown up in North Philly in the 60’s I can attest to the fact that when you meet up with a bad one, it doesn’t go well. All the times I ran for my life, and I’m white, was just considered normal there. See a cop car, go. It was the last thing you wanted to see. Walk, run if they call to you. I ran from cops with their hand on their pistol. Had night sticks thrown at me. Still have one. I wouldn’t want to run today. Maybe they can open up a tent and offer FREE NICKEL RIDES.

I hope sanity wins.

They could be accomplices rather than actual shooters. Their refusal to talk points to SovCit/militia types, since radical Muslims or black activists would have no incentive to hide their real motive and, with nothing to lose, would take every opportunity to shout their message from the rooftops.

It’s probably one of those ‘statistics’ that, while true, is meaningless. Because there are so many more blacks than police officers in America (75 Million vs 1.1 million), if you calculate a RATE, the one with 75 Million as a divisor will generally end up smaller, even though the numerator of blacks killed by cops is much higher.

Thus, it’s likely true that the rate of blacks being killed by cops is lower than the rate of cops killed by blacks.

Blacks killed by cops/ 75 Million < Cops killed by blacks /1.1 million

But it’s also true that the rate of blacks killed by cops is higher than the rate of blacks killing cops, because the numerator of the former is much higher with the same divisor.

Blacks killed by cops/ 75 million > cops killed by blacks/ 75 Million

So, a black person is far more likely to be killed by a cop than to kill a cop.

See? True, but meaningless.

The Post ran a front page claiming that Dallas was the start of a civil war. Enough with the Fox News faux-narratives.

There’s a conflict in the nation, but it’s not the one the Post wants to fixate on, let alone try to fix.

There’s low information voters who buy the right wing swill and have completely bought the incessant irrational anger and fear against others. Trump’s just the latest and biggest to espouse the position, but it’s GOP doctrine. Xenophobia. Bigotry. Racism. Nativism.

That’s all there.

So, who’s the Other the Post is fixating on? Blacks, immigrants, minorities. In other words, the usual suspects. They want people to think that blacks are about to start a race war, when there’s no evidence of the sort.

There is plenty of evidence that institutional racism continues treating minorities, and blacks in particular as having less rights than everyone else around them.

This isn’t happening in a vacuum and one can speak out against the racial injustices just as surely as they can speak out against the senseless murder of cops (whatever the reason ultimately is asserted).

The Wendy’s near my workplace is amazing - IF you use the drive-through window. I’ve called it the Telepathic Drive Thru, because it seems like no matter what you order at the speaker, it’s handed to you, ALL CORRECT. in about 10 seconds at the window.

But it’s never less than $6 for lunch, and hard to keep below 800 calories, so I opt for a homemade sandwich and apple most days.

I’m not sure his actions will. November is a long way off, and voters have short memories. Besides, Trump has a way of tripping over his own tongue and making things worse for himself.

The RWNJs and bigots will push a “black power” scare, but it’s bound to fizzle out when people realize African-Americans are not burning down farms and looting shops nationwide.

So, racism exists only if we talk about it? We didn’t all used to talk about black people being stopped by police far more than white people, or about unarmed black people being killed by police far more than white people, but it still happened.

re: #331 gwangung

Studies have shown that if you consciously stop talking about racism, racist actions and racist attitudes increase.

NOT surprised some people ignore that.

I’ve said this before. I grew up Whitey McWhiteguy in Whitesville, Whitesylvania. There was literally no family in my town of 600* who WASN’T white. There were TWO Puerto Rican families with kids my age in our end of the county, where the towns were so small we had to put 3 of them together to have enough kids for a high school.

My parents have always been among the least bigoted people, most liberal I knew, and they made sure I was taught not to be racist.

But lack of exposure to anybody different in real life, plus exposure only others on TV and such has left me with a series of involuntary emotional reactions to people who aren’t like me. I KNOW they’re not rational, so when I recognize them, I work to not respond based on them.

If I insisted that I’m not a racist, I could only make sense of those reactions by insisting they’re justified.

* Edited to correct. 600, not 60. Its a small town, but not THAT small!

I recall watching something like “Doomsday Preppers” back when I still watched TV. They had some medical guy on who made YouTube videos and concealed his identity with a CLOWN NOSE (has he ever heard of Facebook?). He was talking about all the silver he had in his house and showing it off, and showing all his guns…

He was talking about a saying in the prepper community, “if you have one, you have none, if you have two, you have one”. Which is, y’know, kinda logical to prepare for backups, but there’s no way you need a whole fucking arsenal in every room.

What really killed me, is he had this whole home food and water supply, arsenal, silver reserve, and he was just starting to take martial arts classes because he had recently thought about that, and they showed his martial arts class on TV too. And it was AGAIN obvious he hadn’t taken prepping seriously, because he didn’t START WITH HIMSELF AND WORK OUTWARDS. Furthermore, it was obvious he wasn’t taking the martial arts course seriously, he was doing the exercises, but he wasn’t *trying*, of course, the yellow belt also didn’t help my opinion of his skill…

Thanks! Me too. When I got to the accident scene I saw the other car first, which was totaled. Gave me a good scare.

Saw your earlier comment. Glad your wife is okay. Sounds like the car is probably gone. If the other car is totaled and it hit your wife’s car in the side I’m thinking your will most likely be totaled too. If there is major damage to any of the major A, B, or C, pillars buckling the roof or the undercarriage, it’s done.

Thank God for airbags!

twaddle

you said this: “we are sliding backwards and it’s because the economy continues to get worse as does income inequality.”

i used your phraseology “jobs seem to be sliding forwards” as a direct response to you stating the economy is getting worse.

you responded with “More crappy jobs? Wonderful!” and a google link to the fact that 287,000 jobs were created last month.

from the linked NYT article “”This report should ease any fears that a persistent slowdown or recession is coming soon in the U.S.,” said Dean Maki, chief economist at Point72 Asset Management.”

we are not sliding backwards
the economy does not continue to get worse

Anti-tank dogs didn’t work well. It only worked only if the Russian’s didn’t have tanks around. The dogs had been fed under diesel powered Russian tanks so they’d run there rather than a petrol powered German Panzer.

Germans had robots though (remote controlled demolitions on a tracked vehicle). So this isn’t new, just new to most people.

Dallas PD, from what I’ve read, seems similar to the Police force from my town. FWIW, as a Black Man, I would rather live nowhere else than Lexington KY, in the context of dealing with police.

The reason that the Police and Local leaders feel this way, is a culture of community policing that began shortly after a young Black man named Tony Sullivan was shot and killed by a white police officer in 94. He was unarmed and had his hands up. It was “Hands Up Don’t Shoot” 20 years before Ferguson. We left school during the middle of the day, marched downtown, blocked traffic, all things you have seen from BLM recently. And to the credit of the Police and local leaders, they responded in a very positive manner. It appears that Dallas did the same several years ago. I have several friends that were with me that day of police protest, that are now officers on the Lexington Police Force. Good policing and good police communities do exist. But privilege and racism in the force must be checked and rooted out. It can happen. I’ve been a witness to it.

NAFTA didn’t destroy the economy and it certainly isn’t responsible for the current economy. Obama didn’t get everything he wanted in TARP, and that prosecutors didn’t go after banks that were involved in the fiscal disaster they helped create through their shady dealings isn’t entirely on Obama either. There’s some mighty fine IMAX level projection there.

Define your terms too. Income inequality? You do realize that one of the factors involved in income inequality is that tax policies pushed by the GOP seek to shift burdens from the rich on to everyone else, meaning that tax cuts for everyone harms those least able to afford them. And the so-called job creators aren’t creating more jobs because of tax cuts. Proof? See Kansas where all the GOP tax cut policies were enacted and the state’s budget has absolutely imploded under the strain of lost revenues, job losses, and gutting the education system to balance the budget.

Elsewhere, GOPers like Walker decided to hand out tax breaks to billionaires while cutting education budget. There’s some income inequality for you.

re: #437 mroop

I don’t. I went to one of those places and took the computer test that evaluates your potential in the computer world. The guy told me, “You’re a programmer!” So I signed up and bailed when I had to learn to write my name in hexadecimal on the first day. There were a couple guys outside during break and they were excitedly talking about the programs that were building. I just wasn’t into and I felt that guys like that would beat me every time because they loved it and I did not. Your information is called “anecdotal evidence” and unfortunately it means nothing in the big picture.

I’m glad there is a boom in the tech field, but that does not speak to the disappearance of the middle class which has been happening since the 1970’s. You can check out Elizabeth Warren’s lecture at Harvard Law School in 2008 on YouTube. It’s called “The Coming Collapse of the Middle Class”. When I saw that in 2008 it made me happy that someone was talking about this problem. I actually predicted all of this when I was 17 in the 1980s. When Clinton signed NAFTA I said, “Here we go!” I’ve been watching the middle class disappear for over 20 years now. It’s depressing.

It had been going on WAY before NAFTA. I left my small town PA hometown at the end of the 70’s because all the jobs had vanished, long before NAFTA. But I guess that is just “anecdotal evidence” and means nothing in the big picture either. But your blaming NAFTA for all the ills is absolutely bogus.

The rate of civilians deaths at the hands of police is too damned high, whichever tool they do it with. Culture change, as described by Smith25’s Liberal Thighs in 409, is what is needed. And probably the hardest thing to accomplish in many places.

If he was a black nationalist, I wouldn’t be surprised if he thought having Trump in the White House would help his cause. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve heard the “burn it all down and rise from the ashes” theory before.

Seems like he was a black racist:

The dead gunman was Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, of Mesquite, Texas, law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told CNN.
The suspect told police negotiators that he was upset about recent police shootings, that he wanted to kill white people — especially white officers — and that he acted alone, the city’s police chief told reporters Friday.

I was talking with my brother last night. My belief is that when change happens, there’s a lot of people who embrace that change and others who continue to fight it. It’s no coincidence to me all that the Civil Rights era also saw the rise of race baiting politicians like Wallace, Nixon, and Reagan, granted the former two were elected before the 60’s. Just as it’s no coincidence to me that Trump is thriving. I also think there’s large segments of the population that have never accepted the idea of racial equality. To the ones not honest with themselves, MLK only exists as a tool to shame black Americans into behaving a certain way.

Dallas was anything but a gun free zone.
Dallas had 100s of highly trained law enforcement officers who were heavily armed, complete with body armor, riot gear, and they were openly carrying.
Civilians could be openly carrying their weapons as well.

Despite all that firepower, a formerly good guy with a gun killed 5 of their ranks and injured 7 others (6 cops). It took a robot with a bomb to finally end the killing spree.

If that doesn’t put the whole good guy with a gun and gun free zone madness to rest, nothing will.

re: #514 Belafon

By his handle, I take it that mroop is a big fan of object-oriented programming. Perhaps this parable about that methodology is in order:

Once upon a time, in a kingdom not far from here, a king summoned two
of his advisors for a test. He showed them both a shiny metal box
with two slots in the top, a control knob, and a lever. “What do
you think this is?”

One advisor, an Electrical Engineer, answered first. “It is a
toaster,” he said. The king asked, “How would you design an embedded
computer for it?” The advisor: “Using a four-bit microcontroller, I
would write a simple program that reads the darkness knob and
quantifies its position to one of 16 shades of darkness, from snow
white to coal black. The program would use that darkness level as
the index to a 16-element table of initial timer values. Then it would
turn on the heating elements and start the timer with the initial
value selected from the table. At the end of the time delay, it
would turn off the heat and pop up the toast. Come back next week, and
I’ll show you a working prototype.”

The second advisor, a software developer, immediately recognized the
danger of such short-sighted thinking. He said, “Toasters don’t
just turn bread into toast, they are also used to warm frozen waffles.
What you see before you is really a breakfast food cooker. As the
subjects of your kingdom become more sophisticated, they will demand
more capabilities. They will need a breakfast food cooker that can
also cook sausage, fry bacon, and make scrambled eggs. A toaster
that only makes toast will soon be obsolete. If we don’t look to the
future, we will have to completely redesign the toaster in just a
few years.”

“With this in mind, we can formulate a more intelligent solution to
the problem. First, create a class of breakfast foods.
Specialize this class into subclasses: grains, pork, and poultry.
The specialization process should be repeated with grains divided into
toast, muffins, pancakes, and waffles; pork divided into sausage, links,
and bacon; and poultry divided into scrambled eggs, hard- boiled eggs,
poached eggs, fried eggs, and various omelette classes.”

“The ham and cheese omelette class is worth special attention because
it must inherit characteristics from the pork, dairy, and poultry
classes. Thus, we see that the problem cannot be properly solved
without multiple inheritance. At run time, the program must create
the proper object and send a message to the object that says, ‘Cook
yourself.’ The semantics of this message depend, of course, on the
kind of object, so they have a different meaning to a piece of toast
than to scrambled eggs.”

“Reviewing the process so far, we see that the analysis phase has
revealed that the primary requirement is to cook any kind of
breakfast food. In the design phase, we have discovered some derived
requirements. Specifically, we need an object-oriented language
with multiple inheritance. Of course, users don’t want the eggs to get
cold while the bacon is frying, so concurrent processing is
required, too.”

“We must not forget the user interface. The lever that lowers the
food lacks versatility, and the darkness knob is confusing. Users
won’t buy the product unless it has a user-friendly, graphical
interface. When the breakfast cooker is plugged in, users should
see a cowboy boot on the screen. Users click on it, and the message
‘Booting UNIX v.8.3’ appears on the screen. (UNIX 8.3 should be out
by the time the product gets to the market.) Users can pull down a
menu and click on the foods they want to cook.”

“Having made the wise decision of specifying the software first in
the design phase, all that remains is to pick an adequate hardware
platform for the implementation phase. An Intel Pentium with 48MB
of memory, a 1.2GB hard disk, and a SVGA monitor should be sufficient.
If you select a multitasking, object oriented language that supports
multiple inheritance and has a built-in GUI, writing the program
will be a snap.”

The king wisely had the software developer beheaded, and they all
lived happily ever after

2015 saw the 99% have a 3.9% income growth, the best year of the 21st Century.

But what is the wage corrected for inflation / consumer price index?

It’s all fun and games until you see the attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.

Should be pretty good since oil prices collapsed in 2015, so there was virtually no inflation.

Man wrongly ID’d as Dallas shooting person of interest says cops lied to him during interrogation

Mark Hughes, a protester in Dallas who was wrongly identified by police as a person of interest in last night’s horrific shooting, has learned that the hard way.

After being released by police after willingly turning himself in, Hughes told local news station KTVT that police blatantly lied to him during their interrogation by telling him that they had direct evidence that linked him to the fatal shootings of five police officers in Dallas Thursday night.

“I just got out of an interrogation room for about 30 minutes, where police officers were lying, saying they had video of me shooting a gun, which is a lie, saying that they had witnesses saying I had shot a gun, which is a lie,” Hughes said. “At the end of the day… the system was trying to get me.

I don’t know how many people I’ve turned on to that film since I first saw it back in 1985 or 1986; it was on home video, my dad liked Harrison Ford, so he rented it - knowing it was a sci-fi flick - and I just sat there watching it absolutely stunned.

I have “Final Cut” on BluRay. Superb film.

Interesting that the 1%-99% gap grew despite the lower-tier growth.

The police routinely do that. Nothing special about this case. I think it’s a lousy practice, but it’s legal.

Meanwhile, I foolishly looked at some conservative comments on the shooter having been in the military. Apparently it is received wisdom that gangs and other evil-doers send members to join the military for training-as though you couldn’t learn to shoot a gun somewhere else.
Presumably this permits them to hate on minorities while still deifying the military.

If we could just get a Democratic Congress we could solve that with tax increases on the rich to pay for infrastructure, R&D and education investment.

Which is why a lot of languages, including C++, Java, and C#, have adopted some form of it, though not quite as extensive as Haskell’s. But lazy evaluation itself hasn’t really helped scaling up the complexity of the problems that can be solved in the way going from structured to OO did. What has helped is Haskell’s ability to make more things written be checkable by the compiler.

I’m not saying that it has never happened, but I cannot believe that it is a common occurrence. The military must use some kind of screening for recruits. I also think it is silly to leap to that conclusion without any evidence of it, as the wingnuts appear to be doing.

I was joking (of course) but I agree with you - learning Haskell/FP is a great way to learn to think about making your program safer from the get go.

But for most current real-world programming requirements it’s not a terribly useful paradigm. UNLESS YOU GROK MONADS OF COURSE

All the latest shootings in the US have nothing in common: different ideologies, different races, different classes.
Except for guns.

But, for today, anyway, I am going to make the unremarkable point that none of these people, not the two victims of police violence nor the five victims of Thursday night, need to be dead right now. Their deaths served no purpose. Ennobling them in public grief doesn’t make those deaths any less unnecessary. There is too much useless death in this country, too much pointless martyrdom. That is the lesson of this awful week. That is the only lesson worth listening to in the days ahead.
