IndyStar Confirms: Gov. Mike Pence Is Trump’s VP Pick

A hardline anti-science social conservative
Politics • Views: 47,773

The Indianapolis Star reports they have confirmed that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is Donald Trump’s VP pick.

Gov. Mike Pence is dropping his re-election bid in Indiana to become Donald Trump’s running mate.

IndyStar has confirmed that Trump plans to announce Pence as his selection for vice president, ending a weeks-long vice presidential casting call during which Trump vetted a handful of high-profile Republicans.

Pence is well known as a very hardline social conservative, and built his base among the neocon crowd by being a strong supporter of the invasion of Iraq. Donald Trump has been viciously attacking Hillary Clinton for voting to invade Iraq, of course; but cognitive dissonance, dishonesty and hypocrisy are defining characteristics of his campaign, so don’t expect him (or the media, for that matter) to even notice this disconnect.

Since I’m always interested to know where Republicans stand on the issue of science and evolution in particular, I searched YouTube and discovered this clip from 2009 of Pence on the Chris Matthews show, refusing to answer whether he accepts the scientific theory of evolution. Pence is hardly alone in this regressive nonsense; it’s the default Republican position.

UPDATE at 7/14/16 1:26:44 pm by Charles Johnson

Pence is also a strong proponent of forced invasive ultrasounds for women seeking abortions, and signed a bill into law that requires miscarried or aborted fetuses to have funerals.

The measure, House Enrolled Act 1337, would make Indiana only the second state to prohibit a woman from seeking an abortion because her fetus was diagnosed with a disability such as Down syndrome. It also would prohibit abortions when they are sought based on the gender or race of a fetus, and would require the remains of miscarried or aborted fetuses to be interred or cremated.

Trump went with a prototypical GOP extremist.

His economic policies are regressive and the same trickle down nonsense we’ve seen elsewhere. The Indiana standard of living has dropped in comparison to the rest of the nation.

He’s the forced birth anti-abortion zealot that goes too far for even some pro-Life zealots.

In other words, he’s the kind of politician who’d ram through all the worst policies the GOP could cobble together, and then skip off somewhere to bask in the glory of ruining the economy while sipping Mai Tais.

U.S. Senate Democrats continue to block aid funding to combat the Zika virus this week because the bill does not include taxpayer dollars for Planned Parenthood.

The Washington Examiner reports Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid vowed to continue their silent filibuster against the bill because of a minor provision that blocks funding to a few, non-essential Planned Parenthood facilities in Puerto Rico.

LOL. I know, but then I started seeing some stuff from the pages about autism on my Facebook feed and I am warming to it a little. It seems like it’s helping some people on the spectrum with social anxiety and agoraphobia and other things. Bringing people out of their shells and homes and meeting up with people who share this commonality.

It’s not my thing at all, but I figure if some people are finding it helpful then who am I to bitch about it. There’s a little botanical garden about a mile from me that’s one of the places you can find some of the whatthehellevertheyare, and they put out a call this morning for parents of kids on the spectrum to bring them in today for free admission. I’ve heard some people being lured into being crime victims too, but overall the experiences seem to be mostly good. It’ll pass, we’re the home of Short Attention Span Theater.

Speaking of hotels. I do not know how true it is, but Cleveland is short on hotel rooms for all the delegates. Rumor has it some are being asked to stay as far away as Sandusky (Cedar Point Amusement Park and other Lake Erie Attractions) which is a good 40 plus minute drive into the city. And some of the hotels/motels in the Cleveland area are not of the best quality…so lots of complaining going on.

Again…not sure how true…just ‘talk’ floating around Ohio.

Speaking of which, Azealia still cannot shut up. She is now accusing Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga of copying her.

Which would mean that Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga are Time Lords seeing as they started their careers in 2006 and 2001 (Though Gaga’s first major album would not come out until 2008) respectively. Azealia’s career started in 2008, with her first album being released in 2012.

The media will bitch and moan, for sure, much like they did about the Dem convention in Charlotte:

With thousands of visitors flooding Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention — filling 15,000 hotel rooms spread across 150 hotels, according to Fox Charlotte — there’s bound to be a few bad hotel experiences. Yet if some members of the media are to be believed, the city’s hotels are rife with drug deals, prostitution and bed bugs.

Hm. Could be. Loathsomeness is not exactly a detractor in this campaign, although you certainly don’t want to completely overload the PR/marketing department with TWO loose cannons saying crazy-ass shit from now ‘til November.

Most likely, they looked at the places where they *might* have a chance, and figured that the rust-belt Great Lakes states are full of enough angry old white dudes who remember the 50s, that a governor from that area might just swing something their way. They probably looked at the Derptastic WI Gov. Scott Walker long enough for Trump to dismiss him based upon the fact that his face in repose looks like he’s been lobotomized.

Thing is, despite his utterly vacant expression, Scott Walker is a tenacious cockroach. Whatever handlers the Koch brothers pay for, they’ve managed to make him a force in Wiscønsin. He might have been formidable in the VP slot.

Luckily, Trump is shallow, and his biggest responsibility is picking the hottest chick at his many beauty pageants. So he took the guy that *looks* like a VP. But that someone won’t really bring any big donations or support to his campaign.

Yes, I read it as sarcasm

That does not improve it in any way.

I just found a lovely collection of Boris quotes:

1. “Watermelon smiles”
When Johnson wrote about then Prime Minister Tony Blair’s trip to the Congo in 2002, he sparked outrage for calling local residents “piccaninnies.” “No doubt the AK47s will fall silent, and the pangas will stop their hacking of human flesh, and the tribal warriors will all break out in watermelon smiles to see the big white chief touch down,” he continued.

2. Upsetting the entire country of Papua New Guinea
Johnson offered an apology to the country for writing in 2006, “For 10 years we in the Tory party have become used to Papua New Guinea-style orgies of cannibalism and chief-killing, and so it is with a happy amazement that we watch as the madness engulfs the Labour Party.”

3. Hillary Clinton
Johnson was particularly insulting of the presidential candidate in a 2007 column for the Daily Telegraph, in which he wrote, “She’s got dyed blonde hair and pouty lips, and a steely blue stare, like a sadistic nurse in a mental hospital.”

4. Donald Trump
Johnson’s insults are not bound by party lines: he also said recently, “The only reason I wouldn’t visit some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump.”

5. “Dobby the house elf”
He compared Russian President Vladimir Putin to the knobby-looking Harry Potter character in December: “Despite looking a bit like Dobby the House Elf,” Johnson wrote, “he is a ruthless and manipulative tyrant.”

6. President Barack Obama
In a column for right-leaning British tabloid the Sun in April, Johnson implied that Obama removing a bust of Winston Churchill from the Oval Office was “a symbol of the part-Kenyan President’s ancestral dislike of the British empire — of which Churchill had been such a fervent defender.” The argument drew critiques of being both inconceivable and racist.

7. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Not only did Johnson enter an open contest to pen offensive poetry about Erdogan, but the Spectator selected his poem as the winner. In it, he introduced a goat as a romantic partner for Erdogan, and shamelessly rhymed “Ankara” with “wankerer.”

Wollman Rink: A public ice rink in the southern part of Central Park. Wollman Rink has been operated by a joint venture between Trump Organization and Rink Management Services of Mechanicsville, Virginia since 2001. The Trump name is prominently displayed on the walls of the rink as well as on the Zamboni that maintains the rink. Operation of the Lasker Rink on the north edge of Central Park is also handled by the two companies. The rink generates close to $8.7 million in annual income from rink admissions

Meanwhile, I’m a little surprised that Martin O’Malley’s name has not surfaced as a running mate for HRC. He’s not filling a Senate seat or Governorship so he wouldn’t create an opening someplace. His two-term governorship of Maryland was not completely unblemished, but there is a pretty short supply of unblemished candidates. He would meet the experienced enough threshold, he’s relatively young, pretty progressive.

Most Bernie supporters are going to vote for Clinton, some of them reluctantly, but it’s still an important segment we need to get to the polls. There’s no point in alienating them by passing over Bernie to pick the guy who finished light years behind him. If O’Malley hadn’t run for President I agree he would be a good choice.

All this should be of interest to the Left; after all, one of the most enduring revolutionary slogans of recent times states that “another world is possible.” As Marxists, we should be interested in changing the world — not just altering government policy, or even swapping one ruling class for another, but swapping the human experience of reality from one that is alienated to one that is liberated.

im sorry that’s the job of poets not marxists

Damn the delegates who will vote for this man. Damn the professional politicians who will fall in line behind him or, worse, will sit back and hope this all blows over so the Republican Party once again will be able to relegate the poison this man has unleashed to the backwaters of the modern conservative intellectual mainstream, which is where it has been useful for over four decades. Damn the four hopeless sycophants who want to share a stage with him for four months. Damn all the people who will come here and speak on his behalf. Damn all the thoughtful folk who plumb his natural appeal for anything deeper than pure hatred.

Damn all the people who will vote for him, and damn any progressives who sit this one out because Hillary Rodham Clinton is wrong on this issue or that one. Damn all the people who are suggesting they do that. And damn all members of the media who treat this dangerous fluke of a campaign as being in any way business as usual. Any support for He, Trump is, at this point, an act of moral cowardice. From Daily Kos dailykos.com

There’s no analysis needed here. Speaker Paul Ryan was asked why he, as the top House Republican, was willing to tolerate a candidate from his party who has advanced the most racist, xenophobic, hateful speech since the days of segregation. He says he doesn’t agree with such things, but it’s either that or setting back a laundry list of current Republican goals, so the racist it is.

Paul Ryan is indeed a true conservative. I wonder if he even realizes how much his statement embodies the last half-century of Republican history. He is a policy wonk, we are told, so I’m sure he does.

Now where have I see that kind of thinking before here at LGF?

She should have expressed regret over making such a statement because sitting members of an ostensibly neutral judiciary shouldn’t be trying to sway an election. When they’re on the bench, they’re excluding themselves from that part of public life.

I don’t give a fuck if Trump thinks he won a news cycle over it. It’s wrong.

She should have expressed regret that she’s the one to come out and say that Trump is absolutely and unequivocably unqualified to be president and the GOP wont do so for fear it would offend the offensive bigot brigade that all the GOPers are seeking support from.

The GOP owns this shit show, and RBG is compelled to protect the nation through her position in the justice system. It doesn’t mean she should be silent when a threat appears.

Heck, by the GOP/right wing logic displayed in response to RBG’s comments, Alito should be disbarred/removed, as should Thomas and Scalia before Scalia passed away.

All three of those justices have openly made comments about various political acts by persons in government including to media, law students, or at the SOTU, have close ties to lobbyists, or played sports with the VP.

re: #372 EPR-radar

It’s difficult to predict what will help or hinder Trump. Normal political calculations are irrelevant. The only thing that matters is how many self-deluded fools decide they want to believe in Trump’s lies.

Except the VP candidate impacts how tenable those lies actually are, there’s a certain level of credulity that allowed Trump to get away with all kinds of shit while he was the only face of his campaign. Now he’s got to incorporate another asshole whose views in some cases are diametrically opposed to his. See Testy Toad T’s #50. If Pence really is the pick he will have to try and square those sentiments with being part of Trump’s ticket. There’s also the fact that Pence puts Trump even deeper into the right wing corner regarding reproductive freedom and gay equal rights, right at the time when he should be pivoting towards the center in an effort to win over undecided moderates.

More than anything this is a testament to exactly how shitting Trump’s options were. If he hadn’t gone out of his way early to alienate people like Nicki Haley, Susanna Martinez, or John Kasich. All assholes to be sure, but assholes with much greater potential appeal to independents and women.

That’s sort of a broader problem with society, is it not? Everything must be absolute, everyone must be either capital-R Right or capital-W Wrong, you’re pure as the driven snow or we’re going to haul you before Congress to tear you down and expose your every evil flaw.

Two weeks ago, I thought RBG was a great justice. Today, I still think RBG is a great justice. I also think she’s human, as are we all (donald trump: [citation needed]), and I’ve never had a single day in my life where I did everything perfectly.

Hell, private email server? Kind of a dumb idea, and a small indictment of judgement! But we’re all dumb sometimes, and we all have bad judgement sometimes. We’re so fundamentally unable to move on from stuff. Everything must be the super new hotness, the absolutely most recent event must be turned up to 11 and must completely change everything you think about everything, incorporating literally decades of prior knowledge is verboten.

New trump company found - more at the article

The attorney for ex-Trump aide Sam Nunberg, who was sued by Donald Trump for $10 million for allegedly leaking confidential information to The New York Post, is trying to determine if Donald Trump is operating a secret shadow operation. The issue came to light when Nunberg, who worked as a consultant to Trump in 2015, was asked to sign a confidentiality agreement with an entity called Trump 2012 PCA.

Upon further investigation, Nunberg’s attorneys realized Trump 2012 PCA didn’t appear to be registered in New York. In fact, attorneys for Nunberg told lawnewz.com they couldn’t find it existing anywhere. In addition, Nunberg’s mother, Rebecca Nunberg, confirms to lawnewz.com that her son received at least two paychecks from Trump 2016 PCA, which also doesn’t appear to be registered with the Secretary of State’s Office. She confirmed that Nunberg never received any IRS 1099 forms, which are usually issued by companies who hire contract workers like Nunberg. LawNewz could also not find the company registered in New York or with the FEC.

For years, the Islamic Center of Boca Raton, Fla., served as a polling station for Palm Beach County voters…

…Last week, however, the mosque was removed as a polling site.

The decision was made by Susan Bucher, supervisor of elections for Palm Beach County, after she received complaints, and threats, about the use of the mosque in the Florida primary in August and general election in November….

…”We began receiving complaints from voters,” said Bucher in an email to The Palm Beach Post Editorial Board. “Some felt uncomfortable voting at the Islamic Center.”

She had received a call “that indicated individuals planned to impede voting and maybe even call in a bomb threat to have the location evacuated on Election Day,” Bucher said, and she decided to relocate the polling place to the Spanish River Library about two miles away…”

Also worried about what is in the back of the truck. Military bomb squads at work.

The report about more attackers seems to be based on the police saying they had some kind of guy caught in a nearby restaurant or something.

As you say, in a mess like this there will be all kinds of reports.

And now they are showing video of the truck coming down the road being chased by police. It slows and then picks up speed and just drives into the crowd. Thankfully the video isn’t horrific in content but it is in the fact you know what is happening. Chilling.

He, Trump just made that shit up so his followers can stay afraid and angry at the people he wants them to fear and hate. This lie was a marching order and the Party of Lincoln is right in step with him, straight into the burning Reichstag of this man’s mind.

Welcome to the 2016 Republican convention: a four-day celebration of the ritual suicide of American democracy.

With balloons.

Surely they were preparing for all kinds of possible attacks on Bastille Day.

Well, it did look like there were people (police?) on motorcycles and running along the truck trying to get him to stop.

They also said it happened after the fireworks were over and people were leaving the area. So, who knows maybe the truck had some kind of communications with someone letting them know the timing. Then the truck just drove around the barriers as maybe security was changed to help evacuate the crowds thinking the celebration was over.

Freepers are going bug molester crazy over the Eiffel Tower fire, let alone the Nice attack.
They are dead certain Muslims are responsible for both incidents and are demanding that Muslims be rounded up and deported from the United States in response.
BREAKING: Heavy black smoke over Eiffel Tower as fire erupts after Nice terror attacks

“Mohammed the fireworks truck driver had a workplace acciden (sic)”

“I dunno … the smoke looks terrorist black to me”

“Awfully coincidental”

“Let’s outlaw islam in America”

“Even that is not enough. You have to round them up.”

“Extraction of Muslims!”

“Deport ALL Moslems…seize their assets.”

“How tough is it to announce all muslim non citizens will be rounded up and deported? Save the money for fine wine and cheese.”

In and of itself, this is no more worthy of comment than the latest screeching and hooting episode from some zoo’s baboon troop, but Freep is one of the early centers of Trump’s support, and has been a reliable barometer of right wing opinion for 15 years now.
We can’t let these people win, and we can’t take anything for granted.

Trump wants to convey the idea and message that if he were POTUS, he would be able to stop terrorists from attacking anywhere in the world. It would only be if he were actually elected POTUS and sh*t started happening that he’d realize that he would be unable to fulfill this campaign promise, and when anyone would mention his failure to keep the promise, he’d take to the podium in the WH to insult anyone who reminded him of it. Hell, I think if he were ever POTUS, he’d find a way to keep his Twitter account and use it to denigrate anyone who dared question him. If some Americans thought Cheney was running a shadow government under Bush, I think that is exactly what we’d have under Trump. I just cannot imagine him wanting to be bothered with the minutiae involved in actually governing in a responsible manner. I can also envision him using his position to further enrich himself. He already hinted at this when he mentioned he’d approve the Keystone Pipeline and try to figure out a way to make money by doing it.
