NBC News

Very bad news tonight from Nice in southern France: At least 60 Dead as Truck Plows Into Crowd in Southern France, Driver Killed.

A truck plowed into pedestrians during Bastille Day celebrations in the popular French seaside city of Nice, leaving at least 60 people dead, officials said.

Broadcaster i-Tele quoted the prosecutor’s office as saying the preliminary death toll was 60.

The president of the Nice region, Eric Ciotti, said on French radio 60 people were killed. Nice’s former mayor and a city official, Christian Estrosi said there appeared to be dozens of deaths. He later said there were 70 “victims.”

A spokesperson for France’s Interior Ministry said on Twitter: “The individual who was driving the truck was neutralized. Investigation will determine if he was acting alone.”

No guns. No explosion. Just a massive powerful improvised weapon. Cunning bastards. How do you prevent the use of such a common object?

Freep mods have pulled a hoax story that the Eiffel Tower had been destroyed, so they apparently have some kind of limits. It had already drawn about 10 comments calling for the usual expulsions, roundups, and genocide.

I’m wondering if Pence will want to be VP if terrorism is going to spin out of control. Might be something to be said for staying in Indiana.

You make a good point. Assuming terrorism spins out of control AND the BLM-type protestors in the US become less controllable. A capable General as VP might be realistic.

As usual, I’ll trust Mr. Trump to make the best decision possible under the given circumstances.

Not really sure what could have been done to stop this honestly. The attack was committed with a normal shipping truck. You can’t do much about this.

If true, it doesn’t sound like this was what he was planning to do. Downstairs, someone suggested maybe the truck was an arms shipment - isn’t Nice a port city? - and the driver thought he was going to be stopped and improvised this horror.

French officials should only resign/be forced out of office if it turns out that there was dereliction of duty on their part.

It is simply impossible to prevent terrorist attacks like this with 100.00000% certainty, and it’s important to avoid over-reacting to the attacks that succeed.

He would know he was screwed anyway if the cops stopped him, kind of like Blue Tarp after the Malheur siege. He might also have had the gun to fend off other criminals who might possibly try to hijack the shipment. A whole truckload of grenades and the like would be worth beaucoup euros on the regional market.

Of course Freepers are all over HRC not issuing a statement at this point. It will never enter their minds that some people like to investigate matters and do a bit of research before issuing statements. They like Trump’s approach——something happens, he takes to Twitter and runs to Fox to spew stupid nonsense based on what he “thinks” or feels in his “gut.” Never mind that the things he says makes them more stupid, but they like it, they really like it. They don’t deal well with measured, fact-based commentary.

It’s complicated and difficult to summarize. I think the votes weren’t there to unbind, and there was some attempted deal-making between Ken Cuccinelli (apparently a leader of one anti-Trump faction) and Preibus where Cuccinelli offered to drop the rules challenge in exchange for changes to the 2020 rules such as implementing closed primaries in early voting states. Apparently this deal fell through (!), so it remains a mess.

They don’t deal well with measured, fact-based commentary.

One is being done to respect/honor that life goes on, even in the face of bloody terrorism, the other is an excuse to put off a decision that has to be made. To be sure, the French take the TdF very seriously. They’ll increase security, and they’ll be vigilant, and they’ll carry on.

This should help keep tempers in check next week as well as being another nail in the coffin of “Globull Warming”.

Massive Heat Wave Expected to Hit Much of the U.S. Next Week

The unusually hot temperatures come amidst an extended warm period that has most climate scientists expecting that 2016 will be the hottest year on record. The climate phenomenon El Niño and long-term global warming have both contributed to this year’s temperature spike, climate scientists say.

All the chairborne rangers and armchair advocates still seem to think they know what’s best. Bust out the bombers and attack someone. Somewhere.

Can you identify who/what/where/how? We’re not even done counting the bodies, and some think bombers should be already at it.

Yet, when it comes to putting arms on the ground, sending troops into country X, they wont go for any of it.

The Congress sits in recess for a long vacation as the House returns home to politick to get to keep their jobs. They’re doing less work than prior Congressional efforts, and that’s saying something. Speaker Ryan refuses to act on an AUMF. The GOP wont.

Even with all those constraints, the President’s policies have seen that IS losing ground by the day, and that Iraq and Syria are taking back territory from the terrorist groups.

But the ankle biters will complain that action is being taken, or that words were uttered. Like malicious Malkin. And all the rest…

I saw someone on Twitter say this after Orlando, but I liked it, we should be calling these nimrods Deviant Muslims.

The logic I saw in the tweet used an analogy comparing Islam to a recipe. For example, someone normal would follow a recipe saying it that normally, someone would follow the recipe, and put just 2 Tablespoons of Sugar in. A radical might put in four. However, a deviant would substitute Rat Poison for Sugar. Which is what the equivalent of what these nuts do, ignoring traditional and moderate trains of thought, in favour of twisting things.

I suspect it’ll be huge with GOP women.

It’s too early to give any of the polls serious weight, but I’ve found it interesting to watch the crosstab trends. Women have traditionally tilted Democratic, but if the current trends continue it’s going to be outright leaning.

And when 51 to 52% of the voting population shifts even 3 to 5% more to one side or another, it matters.

One of my wingnut church friends was surprised when I told him that the reason Islamic terrorists blow up other Muslims is because they believe all other Muslims but themselves are wrong. He seemed to subscribe to the whole, “Kill ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out” mentality. There isn’t much hope for that one, but hey, one has to try sometimes.

re: #271 thedopefishlives

Since I got back from fish country on Tuesday night, I have been working feverishly on that old brown Lincoln. I finished up the last major tasks earlier tonight; all it needs now is a new fuel hose and clamps, and a new battery (or to borrow one from Mrs. Fish’s daily driver… shhh…) It’s been a great way to get my mind off of all the bullshit that seems to occupy our worldspace right now. That, and catching Pokemon at work. I’m pretty sure one of our senior partners is the one that keeps hitting our nearest PokeStop with a lure module…

I went to the park today to get in my step count (since Thursday is a weights day, which I turned into pilates, because stretching felt good and seriously that can still kick my ass). That was productive (caught two new ones) and then I had my afternoon free to write.

I picked up a clip-on LED light with rechargable battery (that runs off a USB adapter) and another battery pack (shhh) on Amazon Prime Day so I’m hoping to take my cross stitch with me on the train ride this weekend and make some progress. Also, my phone should not die while at the fairgrounds and I’m hoping for some new variety. And a few stops.

People like that not only don’t know the difference between Shia and Sunni, they don’t care to know the difference. They don’t care that in the 1990’s the Taliban was killing Shia Muslims and their Republican Party was silent about it. The Human Rights liberals that they despise were condemning the Taliban long before any American Republicans were.

I just don’t understand why Trump supporters are so thirsty for his version of the world - that’s it’s out of control, that no one is to be trusted, that only one man can solve the problem.

It’s as if they’ve completely given up on seeing any good in the world and they see the world as too far gone to be able to appreciate anything. I’m not getting it.

It is basic to the fundamentalist mindset that human beings are depraved; they don’t see anything good in this world, only in the next.

I can’t help but wonder if the people who led that war — and the regular people who cheered it on — ever feel even a little remorse?

Many of us knew it was a mistake and marched against it. We were called “unpatriotic,” “idiotarians,” “traitors” and worse.

They worship the badge, not the person wearing it, and they probably think they don’t need pensions and unions are evil. I feel this way because I’m a retired schoolteacher in GA who has heard right-wingers talk about how they want their kids to be well-educated, would never choose to teach school, and blame teachers’ unions when their craptastic RW-led state General Assembly here gut the education budget and liee about it. It’s always someone/thing else’s fault that our kids’ academic achievement isn’t what it could be. Never mind that public employees in GA can’t bargain collectively because it’s in the state constitution. They just know we’re union members, unions are to be hated, don’t care that the RW lawmakers they voted into office give the money that should be spent on education and pensions to corporations that never create the number of jobs their CEOs promise to provide.
