NYT: Trump’s Family Members Talked Him Into Mike Pence

Politics • Views: 45,633

The New York Times reports on the last minute behind-the-scenes wrangling to get Donald Trump to stick to his choice of far right anti-science nut sandwich Mike Pence.

His family had to make the argument that Pence wasn’t his new bestie, he was just some guy who might end up being the president of the United States. Not like the choice really matters.

In conversations late into the evening, Mr. Trump repeatedly hesitated over selecting Mr. Pence, according to people briefed on the tense deliberations, who insisted on anonymity to describe the confidential talks. Even as his emissaries reassured Mr. Pence, Mr. Trump fielded a last-ditch appeal from Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, another finalist, who once again pressed his own case.

Advisers and family members stressed over and over to Mr. Trump that he was selecting a running mate to unite the Republican Party, not a new best friend.

Do you think there’s a chance that Trump will screw this up? Maybe try to order Pence around like he did Christy?

It simply isn’t possible for me to understand how the wingnut mind works. How can anyone listen to Donald Trump or Sarah Palin and say, “there is someone with the temperment and the ability to be the President!”

You think Pence won’t take commands like Christie? He has to; he has accepted his master’s collar.

I don’t understand the self imposed early deadline. Trump could’ve announced his VP pick at the convention. That would’ve been the obviously theatrical thing to do. This bungled to shit, regret laden announcement makes no sense at all.

So, it would appear from posts on social media, that some folk are convincing themselves to vote for Drumpfskind because they are not really voting for Drumpfskind but rather for Pence, and they presume that Drumpfskind will be quickly impeached or resign leaving Pence as President.

Thus they claim they are not really voting for Drumpfskind even though they are voting for Drumpfskind.

Pence had to er, pull out of the Gov race by noon today. That should’ve been taken into major consideration.

Pence had a noon Friday deadline to run for re-election and if he filed he couldn’t run for VP.

Which I also don’t get. I mean I think Pence sucks but he’s arguably the best option Trump had. Christie is a disgusting gut-pile with the worst approval rating in in gubernatorial politics. Flynn, despite his military record, is a Democrat who nominally supports a right to abortion and Gingrich is some kind of unholy demi-lich who is married to the Chicken Lady from The Kids in the Hall.

Trump seriously doesn’t have a clue. He sees no need to hire experts or advisers with real knowledge. Nope. He has a good brain, okay?

It’s highly unlikely that he’s spending any time right now in detailed briefings about the situation in Turkey. Or getting any real education about basic government function, world events, American international policy and treaties, the nuclear triad, etc., etc.

Instead, he’s got his kids just trying to make him act human. And failing, because they have no knowledge of the subject either.

Trump just cannot catch a break lately. He delays his announcement of his VP, except he doesn’t really, releases a logo that’s met with universal ridicule, and the Turkish coup even bleeds attention from that, as it fades into the weekend.

By Monday, he’s stuck with a VP he didn’t want, the announcement is a snooze, the coup is over, and it’s obvious to all that the “jihadi” he declared WWIII over is just a hard-drinking, pork-eating ne’er-do-well who was pulling something illegal and tried to escape through a crowd.

Cain is of course pimping his own blog.

The source of the original information is here:

Cain though is really just screaming for attention. He’s trying to make is sound like the Obama administration doesn’t know about this or are not, in conjunction with the other signees of the pact, not doing anything. Probably because a handful of Republican senators want to make hay of the report to stir up the warmongering wingnuts in their constituencies.

The bottom line of the report is that during part of the rest of 2015, after the July 2015 agreement, in Germany it appears as if Iran continued to try and pursue procurements that could be used for missiles or a nuclear program.

It’s funny because Christie already torched his bridge with the establishment GOP when he nihilistically destroyed Rubio’s campaign. Then he just debased the shit out of himself stumping for Trump, suffering all kinds of rank indignity and abuse at Donald’s hands, ending in outright begging for the VP slot and instead watching it be given to someone Trump is at best ambivalent about. Now Chris has nothing.

Doesn’t he have indictments to look forward to?

I’ve been wondering for some time now why Trump isn’t raising millions from his supporters. If they’re as dedicated as they seem, surely they’d be donating to his campaign like crazy. Something about his failure to raise enormous amounts of money from his millions of supporters doesn’t seem right to me. I remember when Barack Obama ran in 2008 and 2012, I was giving money every month, sometimes several times each month. I’ll be donating HRC’s campaign every month until the November election. I’m also beginning to wonder whether his rank and file supporters are capable of donating to his campaign, or whether they’re not donating because they believed him when he said he’d self-fund his campaign.

Trumps oafish supporters are just like the man himself. They expect something for nothing. I’m sure there is no demographic in the entire country that would be worse for getting political (or charitable) donations.

That’s an insult to My Chemical Romance. Also, you’d think Mr. Cultural Zeitgeist would find a current band to name drop instead of one who broke up in 2013.

After, alas, their best and most fun album. I was really looking forward to more from them after Killjoys. Much more enjoyable than emo max earlier in the discography.

Why give money to a billionaire who claims that he’s “self-funding”?

Why give money to a billionaire who hasn’t yet forgiven his loans to the campaign? If you donate at this point, you’re just giving the short-fingered vulgarian money to pay himself back.

Retirement fund? What’s that? My wife’s fund was mostly lost (over 90%) by the bank that her employer secured to run it after the company decided to outsource it (thanks, Carly Fiorina).

I have the benefit of my VA disability so we won’t starve (and I insist of staying out of stock and bond markets, so we actually have money today for things like trips to Canada).

re: #246 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Yeah, it seems like this law would prevent any governor from running for President or Vice-President. I find it hard to believe this is being quoted or interpreted accurately. And if it is, is this desirable?

It doesn’t prevent them from running at all, it just limits the amount that can be given to their campaign by SEC licensed investment advisors, people with a vested professional interest in the kinds of market decisions the candidate is in a position to make. These state pension funds control billions in public assets. Here’s a breakdown of the rule and the reasoning behind it. Specifically:

Modeled on MSRB Rules G-37 and G-38, which address “pay-to-play” practices among municipal securities dealers, the Rule prohibits an investment adviser from (i) providing advisory services for compensation to a government entity client for two years after the adviser or certain of its executives or employees make a contribution to certain elected officials or candidates, (ii) providing direct or indirect payments to any third party that solicits government entities for advisory business unless this third party is a registered broker-dealer or investment adviser itself subject to “pay-to-play” restrictions, and (iii) soliciting from others, or coordinating, contributions to certain elected officials or candidates or payments to political parties where the adviser is providing or seeking government business.

In addressing commenters’ concerns relating to First Amendment rights, regulatory burdens and other issues, the SEC cited the rarely explicit nature of “pay-to-play” practices, the difficulty in proving such practices, and the inability of market-based approaches to address them as supporting the adoption of a broad-based and prophylactic rule.

Hmm, an interesting observation. At first I thought that ISIS merely claiming responsibility means nothing, but apparently not:

telegraph.co.uk

However, David Thomson, an expert on Islamist terrorism, pointed out that Isil has never been known in the past to claim an attack it did not order and plan.

“Until now, they’ve never claimed an attack opportunistically although they could have done so many times,” Mr Thomson said.

“There must be links (with radical Islam) and if they’re claiming it, that must mean there’s proof of those links and they will make them public.”

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Turkey’s situation remains in flux, and no one seems to know what’s going on. Erdogan seems to be back in charge, blaming an exiled cleric in the Poconos for inspiring the uprising, and now seems to be thrashing the coup participants (including threatening to restore the death penalty against those who participated).

Meanwhile, back here in the US, it seems that the Trump campaign is having a personality crisis. The Trump website lacks any mention of Pence, and the TP logo is no longer showing anywhere.

Picking the VP is an important one, but it’s also among the least important that a President will make. Trump bungled every aspect of the announcement - the logo being the funniest but least important part of it.

Trump’s official site front page has two mentions of Pence, and they’re both essentially quotes of his Tweets announcing the move. No other info. No bio on Pence. Nothing. The donate page, which previously had the lamentable TP logo, has Pence on the page, but nothing else about his running mate.

Bizarre doesn’t begin to cover this.

It’s almost like Trump’s embarrassed to have picked Pence, and wont allow anyone to overshadow him.

Regarding the Turkish military fellows who requested asylum in Greece:

Greece’s government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili has announced the Athens government is in touch with its counterpart in Ankara over the landing of a Turkish military helicopter with eight coup plotters on board in the northern border town of Alexandroupolis, Helena Smith reports

In the first official statement on the issue, the spokeswoman said the military aircraft had been accompanied by two fighter jets into Greek airspace and would be returned to Turkey as soon as possible. Suggesting that crisis-hit Greece wanted nothing to do with the bizarre incident, she also suggested that Greece would repatriate the eight military personnel aboard the helicopter.

“The Greek government has been in touch with Turkish authorities in order to arrange the return as soon as possible of the military helicopter to Turkish authorities,” she said. “With regards to the eight arrestees, procedures foreseen by international law will be upheld although it is seriously being taken into account that in their country the arrested stand accused of violating constitutional law and attempting the overthrow of democracy.”

3:35 p.m.

NTV television has shown footage of a Turkish colonel and other soldiers being taken into custody at military headquarters.

The video shows them being hand-searched by special forces police, their hands behind their heads. Some are later seen kneeling on the ground, their hands still held behind their heads.

According to Hurriyet newspaper’s online edition, some of the privates who were detained told interrogators they were not aware that they were part of a coup attempt. They had been told by commanders they were taking part in military maneuvers. Some said they understood that it was a coup attempt when they saw civilians climb on tanks.

Everyone in Turkey believes Gülen was behind this. It happened because many of his followers within the government were being investigated and the Govt was going to move in on them very soon.

Huge failure on the coup part. 160+ civilians killed. Almost 2000 injured. This has turned most of Turkey against the military. Seems to be pretty much over now though. Flights into and out of Turkey have resumed.

And many citizens mad at us for allowing Gülen to live here.

And here. we. go.

Turkey’s state-run news agency says authorities have detained 10 members of Turkey’s highest administrative court as the government appeared to press ahead with a purge of judiciary officials with alleged links to a US-based Muslim cleric.

The Anadolu Agency said that arrest warrants were issued for 48 administrative court members and 140 members of Turkey’s appeals court. Earlier, Anadolu said a body overseeing judges and prosecutors in Turkey has dismissed 2,745 judges across Turkey.

One has to wonder how exactly Erdogan managed to sack all those judges in such short time. Were these lists known to him before, and he’s now used the coup as a pretext to reshape the judiciary in his image? Moreover, why sack members of the judiciary, which had nothing to do with the coup by military officials.

It just seems off.

The whole thing is off.

I can’t help being a bit paranoid and wonder whether Putin’s had a hand in this.

I’m not going to discount this theory out of hand.

It is entirely possible that Erdogan had been tipped off this was going to happen and he just let it play out. It is telling he had a list of nearly 3,000 judges already prepped to sack and dozens to arrest this morning.

Turkey’s MIT (National Intelligence Organization) might well have known that something was cooking and Erdogan decided, as you said, to let it play out - a sort of loyalty test, as it were.

I can recommend for your binge-watching enjoyment a German TV series called Deutschland ‘83….an eight episode series with part of its story being the NATO Able Archer 83 exercise.

Anybody who enjoys this show… would also really enjoy “The Americans”.

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys are an apparently ordinary suburban couple in 1980’s Virginia. They own a travel agency, they have a couple of kids, and they’re also deep-cover KGB agents. Noah Emmerich, their next door neighbor, is an FBI agent in the counter-espionage division. Richard Thomas, Frank Langella and Margo Martindale have significant supporting roles.

There’s an episode in Season 1 about Reagan’s shooting; other episodes have covered mujahadeen, contras, the TV movie “The Day After”, Arpanet…

There’s two more seasons left; I hope they end with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

We find a way to hand him over. Our efforts against Daesh are too important to put at risk over one man. If victory means handing Gülen over to be murdered to assuage Erdogan paranoia, then that must be done.

I know how I would handle it.

Turkey would have to hand over a case that’s provable in a US Court. In other words, beyond a reasonable doubt, with verifiable evidence that can be corroborated via multiple independent sources.

Otherwise…….forget it. I wouldn’t hand anyone over that thug Erdogan. Under no circumstances. Let him scream. Fuck him.

I’m trying to figure you how you test for sharia. Waterboarding?

theatlantic.com
Sharia Does Not Mean What Newt Gingrich Thinks It Means
One country that officially endorses the Muslim legal system is one of the politician’s favorites—Israel.

So, apart from the obviously unconstitutional quality of Gingrich’s demand—and its deeply counterproductive national security component—another question is worth raising: Does the Israeli government’s support for the existence of sharia courts—the government actually pays the salaries of sharia judges—cast doubt on the Jewish state’s commitment to Western values? Should Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, be questioned by American authorities for advancing the cause of sharia? And what about Israel’s president, Reuven Rivlin, who, in a recent ceremony welcoming the appointment of seven new Muslim court judges, quoted the following passage from the Quran: “Indeed, did We send Our apostles with all evidence of truth, and through them We bestowed revelation from on high, and gave you a balance so that men might behave with equity.”

For the sake of consistency, if nothing else, Gingrich ought to call for the investigation of these sharia-supporting Israelis.

I’d agree with you on that, certainly. Anything that comes from Erdogan is simply not to be trusted; that being said, if a Justice Department investigation were to indeed reveal the Mr. Gülen had actively conspired to overthrow the democratically elected government of the Turkish Republic, then by all means, he should be deported to stand trial. That is a very grave offense, to put it mildly.

Maybe you guys are a lot more up on Turkish internal politics than I. Those of you that have put in the time or have the experience or not included in the following.

We have no certainty, endless facts and factors simply not in evidence. Makes it hard to judge events like a possible extradition without good assurances at the least. We would be all over another country to extradite a person that started violence here. Rightly so. A violent plot against the Obama admin. That resulted in deaths here. That could come to extradite or expect the Marines.

That’s right, they have proven the poll that showed 0% Black voters in Ohio wrong at the same time.

Ken Blackwell!

Yep…good ol’ Ken Blackwell is in Cleveland getting ready for some Trump backing and telling other Ohio Blacks why he too has gone against what he first thought of Trump and why he is all Trump love now.

I understand someone using a cynical “balance of good and evil” calculation. We all do at some point. But: once you appeal to a greater evil of hundreds of thousands otherwise dying, you can’t then make a 180 and say that this matters only as long as the person to be sacrificed is not a citizen of some country of another. If you do, your whole moral argument loses any force it might have had.

I think you are looking at this way too simply…and only in military terms. I believe that thinking has gotten us in deep in the Middle East already.

But lets go with your thinking. How do you know that what happened in Turkey isn’t Erdogan already laying the groundwork for a big change that would end up with us getting kicked out anyway?

Maybe Obama has a feel for what might be a relationship that isn’t all that strong and may be failing. So, he is willing to play this to see what is really going on. In other words force Erdogan’s hand to see where he really stands.

And where does Putin and Russia stand in all this? Are they involved in some of the current Turkey mess?

That’s the kind of short-term thinking that led us to support the Mujahadeen. They were fighting communists! Crucial interests were at stake!! How dare anybody suggest it might backfire on us? (also, Mosaddegh. What fucking nerve he had, trying to nationalize their oil and be insufficiently subservient to BP. We’ll show him!)

Support for the Mujahadeen did not translate directly to the rise of the Taliban. There were many decision made in different countries that came between. The decision to use the them to bleed the Red Army remains the correct one in my opinion.

Sergey’s scenario was just that - A scenario. No demand for Gülen’s extradition has yet been made. I was not proposing we simply hand him over peremptorily. That would indeed be foolish.

I didn’t say that 2nd sentence, nor did I imply it. Blowback has to be risked at times. Where US policy often fails is in the need for planning to avert blowback and then executing said plans.

Your approach oozes with unintended consequence and short-term thinking. It’s the kind of thinking that led Administrations of both parties to do things that ‘made sense at the time’ and left horrible consequences we’re still cleaning up.

We supported the Shah in Iran because we thought it was in our interest despite the fact that he was a brutal despot. How’d that work out for us?

Then we supported Saddam Hussein against Iran after supporting the Shah blew up in our faces. How’d THAT work out for us?

Again and again and again, this short term, “In our interest” thinking actually worked AGAINST our interest, just as surely as it had always been against our stated principles, and now it’s hard to find a country whose population takes us seriously when we speak of our principles.

It’s popular on your team to speak of American Exceptionalism, yet everything they espouse in Foreign Policy is completely unexceptional. Instead, its standard fare for every nation that has enough power to force its will on other, weaker countries. The ease with you suggest tossing Gulen to the wolves because its ‘in our interest’ speaks of no principle beyond immediate advantage with no care for the consequences.

Again and again and again, this short term, “In our interest” thinking actually worked AGAINST our interest, just as surely as it had always been against our stated principles, and now it’s hard to find a country whose population takes us seriously when we speak of our principles.

There’s an old joke, “Americans think 100 years is a long time, Europeans think 100 miles is far.”

When it comes to Asia and the Middle East, their idea of “a long time ago” is way the hell longer than Europeans.

Dark is very American in this; he really truly thinks 20 years is so fucking long ago that he can’t understand that other people think it still matters. He’s honestly baffled that most of the world thinks 20 years ago might as well be last Tuesday.

USA Today: The five words that could sink Trump

Paul Manafort just admitted that Trump is an emotional reality TV star, not a war-time leader.

“He emotionally reacted to it,” Paul Manafort told Chris Cuomo on CNN, explaining why Trump postponed a press conference to announce his vice presidential pick in the wake of the attack that killed dozens of people in Nice, France.

To be fair, there was more to Manafort’s answer than that. “It really bothered him to see that carnage and he felt the pain of the people there, and he said ‘it’s just not right to do something self- serving and political the morning after,’” he said of Trump.

And to be even more perfectly fair, Cuomo kept saying things like “I get that” and was more interested in why Trump was continuing to pretend he had not made a final pick when Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and various aides had already flown to New York for the announcement.

Manafort may have thought he was conveying — or perhaps revealing, given the tenor of the campaign so far — Trump’s great empathy and caring.

But there are many, many ways those five words may come to haunt Trump, starting with this: They crystallize his approach to pretty much everything — including campaign strategy, policy-making, the press, the Constitution, people who criticize him, political rivals and foreign leaders. They are Hillary Clinton’s “Daisy” ad. All she needs to do is run those five words as a continuous loop against video of nuclear weapons and mushroom clouds.

When Trump tweeted that he would postpone that press conference, I and many other political veterans had a flashback to fall 2008 and the Wall Street collapse. Sen. John McCain suspended his campaign, called for a White House meeting and said he and Sen. Barack Obama should cancel an upcoming debate in Oxford, Miss.

The moves were precipitous and did not go over well. Obama, in character as usual as the cool head, said it was “exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person will be the next president.” He also said that part of a president’s job is “to deal with more than one thing at once.”

It was a drive-by, RWC. The car was likely miles away by the time the police arrived on the scene, and unless someone who called 911 managed to provide a good description of the car the police didn’t know what they were looking for till officers arrived at the scene of the crime, if then.

I may end up posting this again later, but I went back a bit to find a posting about Mike Pence. The quote comes from Matt Yglesias but my link goes to Balloon Juice because it’s a great John Cole post. In Over His Tiny Head

There are very few members of congress with whom I’ve ever had the opportunity to discuss a substantive matter of public policy. But as it happens, one of them — the one with whom I’ve had the second-longest exchange — is Mike Pence (R-IN) who I’ve seen on television today repeatedly discussing the Republican Study Group’s “plan” for the financial crisis. And I can tell you this about Mike Pence: he has no idea what he’s talking about. The man is a fool, who deserves to be laughed at. He’s almost stupid enough to work in cable television.

I had never really paid attention to the colors until the all the fear mongering in 2008. That’s when it hit me.

I don’t remember anyone paying attention to the colors used on the map until 2000, and then it was used to show that Bush won more of the AREA of the US. That was followed by the county map version to show just how dominating was Bush’s winning of empty acreage.

When was RedState founded?

Hey…you cheated!

The spacing between the letters in Pence is not the same because you centered them under the Trump letters. If they were using the same letter spacing they would not have lined up centered. The same “problem” the tweeter was having before.

Close and I bet most people wouldn’t see the spacing between because the eye is probably seeing the centering alignment more.

Trump continues to be a farce, a complete and total shitshow. I worry that team Hill will assume he’ll implode and lay back, give some $ or focus more on state races. They have to step on the gas and utterly crush him. The damage this guy will do is hard to fathom.

According to The Washington Post, the terms were coined by journalist Tim Russert, during his televised coverage of the 2000 presidential election. That was not the first election during which the news media used colored maps to depict voter preferences in the various states, but it was the first time a standard color scheme took hold; the colors were often reversed or different colors used before the 2000 election.

If the alternative is Turkey ceases co-operating with us against Daesh and proceeds to kick our A-10s out of Incirlik Air Base? More people will die as the war drags on. I won’t see hundreds or thousands die to save one man who as far as I know isn’t a US citizen (if he were a citizen, that would be different).

Though Incirlik is currently on lockdown, though Erdogan hasn’t accused the US of anything. But given the confused situation in the air last night, this doesn’t surprise me.

Nope. Constitutional rights apply to all people on our soil, not just Americans.

We do not turn over people to foreign courts just because one man (Erdogan in this case) says we have to.

If we go down that road, we have abandoned the rule of our Constitution and body of law.

The crowd for Donald Trump’s VP announcement was made up of Trump family, friends, and tourists who were pulled off of the street and allowed to come in and watch.

BRIAN WILLIAMS (HOST): Katy, was there anything different about today, having covered countless [Donald] Trump events on the road like it?

KATY TUR: Certainly different. This was a room not filled with Donald Trump supporters from rallies, but rather a number of GOP — New York GOPers, some friends and family, and then just tourists who came in literally from off the street, Brian. They heard about it and they asked if they could get in. Secret Service swept them and they sat down, a little bit gobsmacked that they were able to get in so easily and that this wasn’t an event that had more invitees here. That being said, it was typical in the way that Donald Trump spent a good portion of the time talking about, frankly, himself, relitigating the primaries, talking about all the deals he’s made. Also, perpetuating this idea that he was against the Iraq war when he was not. He spent 29 minutes before he got to Governor Mike Pence [(R-IN)]. And he said part of the reason why he chose him — and he admitted this — was that he needed party unity, that he’s an outsider and that he needed somebody who would smooth over relations in Washington.

The fact that Trump had to pad the room with tourists speaks volumes about the real popularity of Trump’s campaign, and his struggles within the Republican Party.

Donald Trump treated the announcement of his VP like the taping of a late night talk show.

Republicans should have been able to stage a major event to launch the 2016 ticket, but Donald Trump refuses to act like a real presidential candidate.

The news conference that should have been packed to the walls with enthusiastic GOP voters was reduced to a spectacle for tourists to gawk at.

Democrats are running a campaign for president, while Donald Trump has turned the GOP into a cheesy reality show with no chance of being renewed in November.

So why would he care about Turkey…they all need to fight their own battles. Can’t worry about people you don’t want in your country when you are worried about kicking out those that may already be here.
