LYRICZ:
hah hanging on
yeah just scraping
whatever you make gets taken
doing the best that you can to get by
days get longer
a choice there is no other
go along or go under cuz it’s time

wheel ain’t stopping
you’re on and you’re locked in
in the end you get one thing, nothing
pain gets stronger
life on your shoulder
go along or go under cuz it’s time

it’s time to get a real life
and get a 9 to 5 until the end
it’s time forever on the edge
just working for your thread until the end

hah hanging on

ooh keep scraping
all of your time gets taken
doing the best that you can to get by
nothing other
never stop to wonder
go along or go under cuz it’s time

blood’s all sucked out
eyes been poked out
in the end you get one thing, nothing
pain gets stronger
life on your shoulder
go along or go under cuz it’s time

*repeat pre-chorus and chorus

it’s time
right where you’re supposed to be
living somebody’s dream until the end
it’s time
right where you’re supposed to be
thinking that you are free
until the end

*chorus

on and on and on
on and on

Mr. Trump might still try (if elected) to tap him for Attorney General or *shudder* the Supreme Court.

Wonkette weighs in on the failed coup in Turkey, and the turkeys here reporting on it (hint: According to FOX News Channel, it’s either President Obama’s or Secretary Clinton’s, or maybe boths faults).

The nominee for new word of the year is …

trumpence
The return on investment of a con, bribe, theft or fraud. This could include the direct financial benefit of a scam or plot, but also can be used to represent the emotional boost a narcissist or sociopath gets from feeling superior to those they have manipulated and tricked.
“You should always make sure the target of your scam isn’t overly intelligent, then you can play on their fears to maximize your potential trumpence.”

Since Sarah Palin’s charisma is zero, does that mean Gov. Pence is in negative, or imaginary charisma territory?

A good article on why the coup in Turkey failed. Yesterday as events were unfolding I made fun of Erdogan being reduced to using Facetime, saying that’s how I knew he was fucked. In retrospect I couldn’t have been more wrong, that was the decisive moment in which he actually weaponized social media to turn the population against the plotters.

As some of you may be aware, the notorious “pastor” Mark Driscoll is starting a new church in Scottsdale, AZ, after cratering his previous megachurch plant, Mars Hill Seattle, in 2014. I was going to go out there tomorrow (to “Bible study”) with new signs encouraging people to use Google Fu to find out more about Driscoll (and boy, there’s lots). However, this morning I took a stroll through the online Maricopa County Recorder of Deeds and confirmed that yes, he’d bought the church he is meeting in, and the “church” (whose first “church service” is scheduled for August 7) is already indebted to the tune of $2,425,000.00 on two mortgages.

Hence my new signs:

Yes, please, ask Mark.
Why you, church attendee chump, you’re going to pay

People like this really lost their shit when Obama was elected.

Bret Baier was on Colbert the other day; he told Stephen he’d be interviewing Trump, asked if Stephen had a question. Stephen told him; regarding “make america great again what exactly did he mean by again? when exactly does he think it was great?”

It makes me happy that Bret took that suggestion.

Dinner at Chili’s in NYC, surrounded by far better restaurants, is a missed opportunity.
That observation is in no way a call to “destroy” Chili’s or even disparage it, it’s just the truth. Conservatives shouldn’t have a problem with that, but now a lot of them see it as an opportunity to clam they’re victimized.

It was a “safe” choice. Go to a Chili’s anywhere and the bacon cheeseburger will be in the same location on the menu and taste the same. Sort of like choosing a white male to be your vice president.

Heck, they could have gone classic NJ diner at the Bendix, which is just a stone’s throw from the airport. Or they could have gone into Rutherford for a dinner at any number of well known and well regarded restaurants. Or headed over to Hackensack for White Manna.

Seriously, with all the local goodness, they went with the chain.

Speaking of unsatisfying meals, I am in the airport in Changsha (provincial capital) having a late breakfast before my flight to Beijing. For US$8 I got fried egg and tomato on toasted white bread, four chunks of cantaloupe and a cup of coffee. At least the coffee was good.

Police say a man, who has not been identified, heard loud noises outside of his home. He looked out his window and noticed a white car with its brake lights on in front of his house. The man grabbed his gun and went outside. The man says he heard someone say, “did you get anything”. The man then stepped in front of the car, pointed his gun at the teenagers, and told them not to move. The man claims the vehicle sped towards him, and he started shooting at the vehicle.

The weird thing is that Obama being elected was one of the final straws that made me realize I had to part ways with the right. I saw so many of the bloggers and pundits I’d been reading and linking to losing their fucking minds, and by that point I was really getting that right wing propaganda was dishonest from start to finish. Not just about Obama - about everything. Climate change, evolution, Islam, the economy, women’s rights, all of it. All a lie.

A Child’s First Book of Trump

Dear reader, I know that you might be confused
After spotting this creature that’s been seen in the news.
What is this strange beast you keep hearing about?
Together, I think we can figure it out…..

Trumpus Americanus
The beastie is called an American Trump,
It’s skin is bright orange, it’s figure plump,
It’s fur so complex you might get enveloped,
It’s hands are, sadly, underdeveloped.

Now where does it live? On flat screen TVs!
It rushes toward every camera it sees.
It thrives in the most contentious conditions
And excretes the most appalling emissions.

It’s diet is cash, it’s friends all go-getters.
It’s poop spells out “Trump” in ten-foot high letters!
Trump this Trump that, and Trump buildings and steaks,
Trump airplanes and clothing and several Trump mates.
Trump crap everywhere in a Trumpy Trump land.
But don’t call it crap. The Trump calls it a “brand.”

Yes, it can speak! Are you impressed?
You should be, because a Trump’s really the best!
It says so if asked, and even if not.
“I’m the best” it declares in terms overwrought.

“I have the best words and all the best things!
My water is bottled from the best spring!
My wine is the best, and so is my brain.
You wanna know why? Too bad! I’ll explain,”
(Here’s where a Trump will go on at some length
On size of it’s manhood and physical strengths.)

When I first started touring with George Duke, I actually saw some of the “Whites Only” signs that used to be all over the South. It made a huge impression on me.

My husband went to school in the 60’s in a small-town Texas K-12 building that still had two sets of water fountains. It’s still very much in living memory.

If I ever get to travel to NY since my one trip in 1990, I’ll definitely have to ask you guys for places to go. As for Pence, he might have also been afraid of getting liberal cooties if he went to some fancy restaurant.

BTW, how much does the VP get paid each year?

When I was in New York back in the 70s my buddy took me to the Carnegie Deli. I swear I NEVER saw sandwiches so stuffed anywhere else!

Still remember attacking their Woody Allen sandwich—corned beef and pastrami with deli mustard shmeared on the rye!

Yes it was a challenge to eat, but it was so good!

I don’t think they were in his yard, they were out front in the car. From #44:

Police say a man, who has not been identified, heard loud noises outside of his home. He looked out his window and noticed a white car with its brake lights on in front of his house. The man grabbed his gun and went outside. The man says he heard someone say, “did you get anything”. The man then stepped in front of the car, pointed his gun at the teenagers, and told them not to move. The man claims the vehicle sped towards him, and he started shooting at the vehicle.

I’m sure the fact that a vast majority of Americans oppose Citizens United has nothing to do with that.

There still ought to be a middle ground between an unknowable Super PAC and having the FCC establish rules banning the premiering of movies attacking a candidate near an election. The problem is that to balance the competing interests you’d need a long and detailed constitutional amendment.

Short and sweet wouldn’t work; It’d have to be long, detailed, and written so as to largely straightjacket the Supreme Court. Nothing else would satisfy partisan concerns enough to gain passage. And those concerns would have to be satisfied, because neither party will likely ever be strong enough to push through an amendment without the support of the other.

My condolences on your sister. Has she considered in the unlikely event Dr. Stein were to take some electoral votes, that could throw the election to the House and the current wingnuts would get to select the President? [Meaning Trump] (This is why our system is largely a two party one.)

Or that Dr. Stein hangs out with racist Russian oligarchs, as shown on her own Website?

I think I have heard Republican lawmakers talking about how they hate having to constantly call donors for money when they’d rather be working on legislation, so there might be something to that. I don’t have much confidence that a Constitutional amendment against Citizens Untied will succeed though.

It might pass Congress, but I doubt if it could get ratified. Unless there’s a 1992/2006-style Democratic avalanche in November. That’s why we have to get a couple more sane justices on the SC.

On another token, I can’t understand why anyone on the left would try to suck up to Putin or make excuses for him. He’s an authoritarian strongman that rigs his country’s economy in favor of oligarchs, emboldens Christian conservatives to commit hate crimes against the LGBT community and engages in the type of rank imperialism the US left decries. re: #189 Dark_Falcon

It doesn’t have to be long and detailed at all. Full disclosure. Whaddyaknow, it only took two words.

Every donor, every dollar, who does it come from. So voters can look to the funding source as meaningful information. (example from the last NYC mayor’s race — there was a whole to-do about eliminating the Central Park carriages, it’s so mean to the horses, waa waa waa animal rights; then it turned out the entire advertising campaign and lobbying for this issue was funded by a real estate developer who had first refusal rights on a 3-square block midtown waterfront parcel where the stables were. It had nothing to do with the horses. And potential high-rise redevelopment of that parcel was something voters would find relevant).

Even for groups whose true agenda is well-known — NRA and Planned Parenthood support and oppose candidates for obvious & predictable reasons, but their donors aren’t anonymous. And what they expect from their successful candidate, is never a surprise. When their name is on an ad, I know damn well what that means about the candidate’s view on that issue.

I was thinking the same thing. Both my parents were dems and I’m glad they’re not around to see this shit show.

I don’t know how they would have felt about BLM. My dad surprised me a couple of times with the stuff he said. He’d be 106 if he was alive. He grew up being called a kike. He immigrated to the US from Poland when he was six years old. We had relatives lost in the holocaust. But a couple of times I saw ugliness from him concerning POC.

Honestly, if my parents were trumpsters, I’d not deal well with that.

The RNC convention is finally almost here, a mere 33 hours to the official start, with rioting and street battles to begin any moment. The rwnj bullshit du jour is that the Secret Service and Cleveland police have double-sekrit orders to stand down so thugs, terrorists, and Democrats can work their evil. Somebody, maybe Hannity, has characterized Cleveland Mayor (and Army veteran) Frank Jackson as a communist who wouldn’t think twice about joining Obama in some dastardly plot against Real Americans. The proposed solution, of course, is for more Trumpeters to show up with still more guns and defend the convention.
Isn’t it disturbing how inured we are to the constant drumbeat of violent incitement in the rightwing media? Their every claim and position anymore seems to point toward mass shooting as the solution to a host of crises.

It’ll be the best pole. The longest pole. Your head will spin!

Meanwhile, in Turkey’s neighbor, there’s a hostage situation going on:

A group of armed men from an opposition group stormed a district police headquarters and exchanged gunfire with police in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, early in the morning on July 17, the National Security Service said in a statement.

The opposition group Founding Parliament issued a statement demanding the release of the group’s leader, Zhirayr Sefilian, who was arrested last month on charges of seeking to overthrow the government by force.

Varuzhan Avetisian, a spokesman for the group, has also announced that “they are starting a rebellion” and an attempt to “overthrow the government” and “release political prisoners.”

Hm.

Cohn-Bendit published a number of provocative statements regarding “sex with children” in the 1970s and early 1980s, notably in his 1975 book The Great Bazaar (Der grosse Basar) where he describes erotic encounters with five-year-olds in his time as a teacher in an anti-authoritarian kindergarten.[12]

[…]

It cited a 1978 defence of Cohn-Bendit’s of this editorial practice, as well as an appearance of Cohn-Bendit in a French television talk-show in 1982 where he described a five-year-old undressing herself as an “erotic game”. Cohn-Bendit reacted to these allegations by claiming that his descriptions of erotic encounters with pre-pubescent girls were not based on true events but were merely intended as what he today calls “obnoxious provocation” aimed at questioning sexual morals at the time that “shouldn’t have been written that way.”[13][14][15]

And spiegel.de

In the 1980s, some members of Germany’s Green Party advocated the legalization of sex with minors. Now the party wants to come to terms with this dark chapter via an independent review of internal documents — some of which show that the influence of pedophiles on the young party was much stronger than previously thought.
[…]
Documents like this have become a problem for the Greens today. Some 33 years after the party was founded, it is now being haunted by a chapter in its history that many would have preferred to forget. No political group in Germany promoted the interests of men with pedophile tendencies as staunchly as the environmental party. For a period of time in the mid-1980s, it practically served as the parliamentary arm of the pedophile movement.

That is most likely the case. Most large venues and buildings (I noticed this when The Husband was in the hospital a few years ago) have colors marking different floors or sections. Some even have stripes painted on the floors to lead you from place to place. The elevator banks are marked that way too, so you can find out which is which and get to the right places.

The optics are bad, considering who we’re talking about here, but it wasn’t a GOP purposeful thing. Besides, there are volumes of quotes and recorded incidents of their racism and supporting racist causes/groups. Not to mention the countless hours of videos and interviews. This is so tiny as to be half a drop in an ocean sized cesspool of their making.

That was my guess yesterday. I was thinking they named the different levels in Quicken arena Red White and Blue.

I had MSNBC on a bit earlier and they were showing all the security fence going up around a large area in the Downtown that will have gates controlled by the Secret Service. Also showed the many extra law enforcement coming from all around the country to help out in Cleveland. They seemed to make special mention of many from California. I wonder what’s up with that? I saw where Columbus is sending 60 or more too.

They scrolled a rather long list of organizations that filed for protest permits. They scrolled it, but so fast I could catch all the name. I did see Code Pink by the time I was able to look up from listening. Figures they’d be there.

The protesters are limited to three spots they can protest, but I don’t think any of them appeared real close to Quicken, they look to be more toward central downtown. They also get a predetermined protesters parade route.

One day away! Let freedom ring…or something.

I live about two miles from the location of the 2008 republican convention and the efforts to keep delegates from having to have any contact with non-delegates was nauseating. All of the restaurants within a block of the convention lost tons of money that week because locals couldn’t get there and the delegates wouldn’t leave their bubble. I took that week off work and just stayed home to follow the convention on-line and listen to the constant sound of choppers in the air (I called in to the MN Public Radio morning show to request ‘Here Come The Choppers’ by Loudon Wainwright and they played it for me). It was an ugly week all around.

Found a pretty good article about all the negotiations that have gone on over the last few months over security setups in Cleveland from the Atlantic posted yesterday.

The Atlantic - The Security Challenge in Cleveland

The Security Challenge in Cleveland
The city says its police are ready for the Republican National Convention, but in the year of Trump, everyone is on edge.

- - CUT - -

Cleveland officials say they’re ready. “We are prepared, and we have done our due diligence in many different ways,” Mayor Frank Jackson said at a May 31 press conference. In an interview, Jackson spokesman Dan Williams elaborated: “It depends on what you mean by ready,” he said. “We’re ready because we have the right security forces with the right training. It’s not just about security. We have a whole lot more to offer. We’re going to be the best host for people that we can be.”

These assurances haven’t soothed activists, attendees, or the press, whose reports nervously speculate on the state of security. Worries about preparation were exacerbated by a late-June court battle between the city and three activist groups that sued it over demonstration guidelines. The plaintiffs were Citizens for Trump, the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless—both of which are exactly what they sound like—and Organize Ohio, a progressive grassroots group. In other words, it was a classic American Civil Liberties Union coalition of strange bedfellows. Citizens for Trump and Organize Ohio wanted closer access to the convention for marches. The Coalition for the Homeless was concerned about how the huge square security zone around the convention arena would affect homeless people in downtown Cleveland. A judge ultimately deemed the 3.3-mile security zone around the arena excessive and unconstitutional because it didn’t give protesters enough proximity to the site; demonstrators have a constitutional right to be seen and heard by the targets of their demonstration. The city settled and loosened the rules for permitting and significantly reduced the size of the security zone. Now, protesters will be able to get closer to the convention itself.

“Every municipality starts out with, ‘We love the First Amendment, we love everybody’s rights, we’re going to be there for them,’” said Christine Link, the executive director of the ACLU of Ohio, which brought the suit on behalf of the plaintiffs. “They spin that for months, and then the convention comes and they arrest everybody.”

Battles like this, usually waged by the ACLU, are staples of pre-convention wrangling. Host cities, after waging a years-long crusade to win a convention, want to make sure that the event is as sparkling and trouble-free an advertisement for the city as possible. “The city of Cleveland, like most convention cities, is taking the position that this is a business deal with the Republican National Committee,” Link said. In other words, the convention area is effectively privatized, pushing ordinary citizens out and establishing a special, temporary jurisdiction. Law enforcement, in turn, would just as soon have protesters as far away from the arena as possible, since it gives them more control over a messy, elaborate situation. “It takes a lot of planning and forethought,” said Ray Kelly, who was commissioner of the New York Police Department during the 2004 Republican National Convention in Manhattan. “We started planning 18 months before—before we knew whether the convention was going to come. You have a lot of moving parts.”

Hoping for a bounce? That’s not setting the bar low. That’s not setting a bar at all. It’s expected that every candidate comes out of the convention with a bounce. For Trump, it’s possible to come out of it in even worse shape as we see all the malicious BS that the GOP is now openly advocating. Trump mirrors what the party is thinking.

Republicans who aren’t there aren’t doing nearly enough. They still wont stand up against the bigot brigade that Trump’s unleashed, mostly because they and current GOPers have cultivated that ignorant hate/fear and bigotry for decades. They will need those votes come November to stay in office.

Priebus Insists There Is Now ‘No Religious Test’ in Trump’s Muslim Ban bit.ly (VIDEO)
10:25 AM - 17 Jul 2016

#Facepalm A ban based on religion is the very definition of a religious test. How else would you be able to figure out who’s Muslim? Appearance/name/country of origin are not reliable indicators.

Moreover, if you’re going to base it on country of origin, wouldn’t that put France and Germany and Turkey in the crosshairs? And Israel. And Jordan. And Saudi Arabia. Egypt.
India. Pakistan. Russia. Etc.

All have had homegrown terrorists carrying out attacks against domestic populations and they’ve claimed (or been claimed) by groups like IS.

Then there’s the US, which has also had homegrown terrorists like Adam Gadahn. Or Awlaki.

Trump didn’t pivot so much as revert to an earlier position which is just as unconstitutional and illegal. And bigoted along the lines of what nativist/America Firsters did before and during WWII to keep Jewish refugees out of the US. Right down to the claim that Jewish refugees from Germany could be saboteurs/terrorists.

Notice what he says; “I’m just hoping for a bounce.” That’s an admission of fear on his part.

To be fair, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Trump enjoyed a bounce after the convention - after all, that’s a normal state of affairs. That being said, any bounce Trump may get will most likely be short-lived and ultimately, utterly overwhelmed after the Democratic Party convention which follows shortly after.

Open carry is an absolute disaster everywhere it’s been enacted. How many people have been killed as a result of open carry including today’s shooting and the one in Dallas. How many people have been killed despite the open carry rules because they were purportedly carrying while black. Open carry is a white privilege only, and it makes law enforcement even more dangerous, since these gun nuts are heavily armed - often more so than the beat cops they’re likely to come across.

There is no reason for open carry.

re: #315 A Mom Anon

Would have to find verification, but have read from people in Cleveland that those are NOT the regular signs at that venue. Haven’t had time to check.

Edited to add—never mind—I see this has already been discussed and I was reading it wrong. I blame my confusion on heat as my a/c is broken!

That could happen. But I have seen similar expectations about CCW and active shooters. There was a close call where human judgement made the right decision when Gabby Giffords got shot. Then several big shootings since when it was a near certainty there were people carrying guns (presumably legal) and just fled or hid as the sensible first option in a active shooter incident. .

The GOP convention this year is where I don’t want anything more dangerous than Kleenex in hand. Still hoping for a couple days click baity, shrill and profane rather than violent.

The conventions are always hot spots for protests. The scary thing is the wingnut development of open carry protests in the last few years. One would hope that those engaging in open carry would have the (minimal) decency to not carry loaded weapons. But since they don’t have the minimal decency to follow the advice of Johnny Cash and leave their guns at home, I’m guessing many are walking around with loaded weapons

The people who advocate Open Carry are the same ones who will tell you we’re too afraid of guns, that as kids they used to carry their .22 to school for plinking afterwards, and that as kids they used to play with toy guns all the time and nobody batted an eye, and they didn’t become violent psychopaths. And they’ll tell you they need guns to prevent/fight against Government Tyranny.

Then they’ll blame Tamir Rice for getting shot playing with a toy gun, or John Crawford for getting shot holding a toy gun, or Philando Castile for getting shot trying to get out his CCW license.

They are totally blind to the racism inherent in what they say and think, and totally blind to how dangerous Open Carry makes every situation. And to them, Government Tyranny is not being able to prevent strangers from doing things they don’t like that harm them not at all, while an entire race is suffering ACTUAL Government Tyranny - which they excuse.

Actually, it was a mom’s advice to leave the gun at home. ;)

That may be the same guy. The clothes are the same color and so is the rifle. He likely just slung the rifle to free up his hands and maybe make people less nervous.

There is no “less nervous”. There’s a guy walking around a large US city carrying a fucking weapon. There’s no deer…only humans.

I repeat. There is no less nervous. These fucking people want to terrify.

Fuck him and the whole guns in polite society are just dandy movement.

If either airfield attack succeeds, then things will escalate again.

Most likely. And if the Turkish military ends up fighting itself - well, then there’s gonna be a big damn problem in Turkey. One thing I’ve discussed previously with my students who are knowledgeable on international affairs was the absolutely disastrous scenario of a Turkish civil war. The Middle East would be even more chaotic than it is right now. It’d become a downright nightmare.

No point in carrying an unloaded rifle, since if something jumps off you’re going to be targeted immediately. Better to just not have a round in the chamber and have the first round or two be less-lethal rounds designed to mark (paint) or stop (rubber bullet).

As for me, I think open carry of rifles is silly and foolish except for hunting, living history displays, reenactments, and parades.

Same here - I can certainly see open carry under those kind of circumstances.

But carrying it to the local Wal Mart or IHOP? Yeah…..I doubt that’s gonna be a real high-priority target for the al-Nusra Front or Da’esh.

No. Just no. If you carry it, you carry it unloaded, so if you drop it, or some kid starts playing with it, or whatever, there’s NO POSSIBILITY it goes off. For Christ’s sake, guns with detachable magazines are DESIGNED TO BE loaded in mere seconds. It’s not a fucking war zone, you’re not patrolling enemy territory expecting fire from any quarter at any moment. You’re walking down a city street.

Open carry is stupid and dangerous. LOADED open carry is orders of magnitude more stupid and dangerous.

And no, you don’t put in ‘non-lethal’ rounds, because then you’ll start thinking they’re safe.

Isn’t it amazing that the police have to ask a governor to relax a law that is more or less in place due to the lobbying efforts of a group that is not voted into any kind of a political position by the citizens of this country.

And a group that is not following the advice of the police who are hired to protect us but now find it hard to protect themselves which is just going to make things bad for everyone.

And that group is the NRA.

How in the hell did this happen in a country that has a representative style governing system?

I have. Twice.

In one case I saw it swivel. He caught it on the bench he was passing and just pulled - and didn’t do a basic check but just assumed everything was fine.

The other, I just saw it was on fire. I asked him to safe it, he told me I obviously didn’t know what I was talking about. A bit more discussion and he finally condescended to look at the weapon. And put it on safe.

DF, I spent too many years on army rifle ranges and saw too many allegedly safe and empty weapons put a bullet somewhere - sometimes downrange, a couple of times down the firing line. I have zero trust that these individuals will never make mistakes.

And IF a round is in the chamber?

As I say, people are killed by guns they were certain had no round in the chamber. One kid in a nearby suburb was showing off his Dad’s pistol. He worked the slide, dumped the magazine, declared it unloaded, and shot himself in the head.

He died because he was CERTAIN there was no round in the chamber. He’d done the right things to make sure that was the case. But he’d done them in the wrong order.

And the thing is, open carry of loaded firearms requires you to trust complete strangers know their guns well enough, and are sufficiently cautious that they won’t fuck up. but we know that even police, who are trained in gun safety, who work with guns and carry guns every day have negligent discharges, sometime with fatal consequences.

I have to wonder, actually, if the reason so many professional Republican politicians are not attending the RNC isn’t more about the weapons than it is about Trump.

If you’ve ever received hate mail, you have to wonder if that person is going to follow up. Your normal steps to take are to minimize the chances for that to happen.

And now you’re asked to stand in front of a large number of strong-willed people, several carrying weapons, which is exactly how your hate-mail correspondent described himself?

I cannot help but be sympathetic for every person responsible for security at that convention. They are so potentially screwed, and if/when it happens there will be tons of “why didn’t you see this coming?” and “this detail here made it obvious” and all the other crap Monday morning strategists toss out.

If its on safe, an AR still won’t fire. And yahoos though these guys are, I’ve never seen them hold an urban protest without their safeties on.

Armed volunteers have been turning up at military recruiting centers since the shooting deaths of four marines and a sailor last week in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They say they want to protect recruiters, who are not armed.
“They won’t give these guys any weapons to carry or keep in a safe. If we don’t do it, who is going to do it?” armed volunteer and Marine veteran Kenneth Casteel, who had been keeping watch over the recruiting center where the shot was fired, told the Columbus Dispatch prior to the incident. “It’s a matter of safety.”
Reed was apparently trying to clear the ammunition in his AR-15 rifle when he accidentally fired a shot into the ground, according to WCBE, an NPR station in central Ohio.
“I was out here and was talking to a guy who wanted to look at my AR-15,” Reed told the Eagle-Gazette. “I was trying to clear the weapon and hand it over to him when it went off. I thought it was empty and must have missed it.”

Yah, we should believe that the idiots carrying guns in public don’t have a round in the chamber and the safety on.

And we won’t even discuss all the pistols being open carried that don’t have safeties.

If he grants the temporary ban on open carry this late in the game, you know that a bunch of assholes are going to do it anyway as a protest and things could get really ugly if the cops try to convince them otherwise. Are they going to try to corral them and cart them off like they do with peaceful protesters? This is going to be a big lose-lose.

I doubt a governor even has the authority to suspend a state law. And Kasich won’t dare cross the NRA.

Dead horse? Sorry if so.

At the World Speed Shooting Championship, all the competitors carry their guns through the day, walking to a shooting bay, awaiting their turn, then walking away. it’s a huge event. Hundreds of competitors, hundreds of spectators, dozens of officials and safety officers. Nobody gets to load a gun until they step up into the bay and the RSO tells them to. After they shoot, they both check the gun to make sure it in unloaded before reholstered or boxed up. Break that rule and you are disqualified and told to leave.

that’s why that event has gone on for decades with a serious injury, let alone a fatality. World champions don’t like loaded carry. The best gun handlers on the planet say no to loaded carry away from a defensive need.

Quote from the Dallas police chief:

Chief Brown said, “It’s increasingly challenging when people have AR-15’s slung over and shootings occur in a crowd and they begin running and we don’t know, or, we don’t know if they’re the shooter or not …has been the presumption that a good guy with a gun is the best way to resolve some of these things, well, we don’t know who the good guy is versus who the bad guy is if everybody starts shooting!”

So the yahoos screaming about blue lives matter and also advocating open carry everywhere will solve this issue how?

The only thing that will stop a bad legislator pimping for the NRA is a good legislator working for the people.

Theresa May has indicated that Brexit could be delayed as she said she will not trigger the formal process for leaving the EU until there is an agreed “UK approach” backed by Scotland.

Since Scotland won’t agree to anything which doesn’t let them stay in the EU, it could be a very, very long time before Article 50 is invoked.

So Reason posted this rebuttal to a derpy piece from Jacobin calling everyone to “resist” Pokemon Go. I actually agree with most of Reason’s analysis on this, which makes me feel a little dirty. An excerpt:

Now Marxist sympathizers at the socialist magazine Jacobin think the new Pokemon-themed iPhone app—which is currently being enjoyed by millions of people worldwide—should be “resisted.”

Seriously:

For many critics, we’re living out an apocalyptic scenario. This is about Pokémon Go, of course it’s about Pokémon Go — how else could you describe a world in grown adults in their millions are milling about aimlessly, staring at their phones, collecting digital rats, reliving a stupid childhood, and shrinking all the while into inattentive sugar-zapped brats?

Author Sam Kriss takes care to note that PokemonGo could theoretically jibe with the Marxist worldview if it wasn’t so consumerist and “indifferent to social existence.” I’m excerpting a whole lot of text here, but the entire thing is really worth reading:

The power to actively impact this augmented reality belongs only to the company’s executives, and the power of children’s play has been subjected to another round of primitive accumulation and alienation. Our world does not become entirely other; instead, a new stratum is added to slot effortlessly into the tedium of daily life.

For the player of Pokémon Go, the injunction is to obey. Real human bodies are tamed and directed by dangling virtual lures: businesses can buy in-game items that will tempt customers into their establishments; the state could probably quell an uprising by scattering hundreds of rare Pokémon away from the central square. If they wanted to, the game’s creators could send people leaping willingly off cliffs, dawdling on train tracks, running into forest fires.

It’s a technology of biopolitics, something that speaks in one voice to the atomized millions and in its own small way helps to direct their lives. For the moment its injunctions are mild, but their mildness is that of the bourgeois ideal raised to an imperturbable universal.

The piece ends with a call to action:

Walk around. Explore your neighborhood. Visit the park. Take in the sights. Have your fun. Pokémon Go is coercion, authority, a command issuing from out of a blank universe, which blasts through social and political cleavages to finally catch ‘em all. It must be resisted.

Ah, the juxtaposition of “fun” as the enemy of working class people, rather than something they probably enjoy (though they shouldn’t—their little bouts of “fun” threaten the permanent revolution).

All joking side, Kriss’s thinking here is limited in several important ways. First, he’s wrong to assert that PokemonGo necessarily replaces unstructured playtime with obedience and drudgery. Kriss finds the world of PokemonGo limiting—it’s just the regular world with Pokemon transposed onto it. But for a lot of kids, that will only be a starting point. They aren’t going to simply go through the motions of PokemonGo for ever and ever. The app will lead them to explore new places, meet new people, and come up with new games. They won’t just stare at their phones for eternity.

Since we’re in OT safe territory, I have a question for the lizard hive mind.

If someone wanted to move across country, mostly because they are tired of living in a southern suburban hellscape, where would one begin looking for work? There can be no move without gainful employment, so that’s step one. Job sites online are not helpful really, so what else?

re: #591 No Depression

Whenever a new media form comes out—movies, comics and TV—there’s always an industry of people tut-tutting about How Bad It Is For Us. We know how comic books were destroyed by the 1950’s hysteria.

We’ve been fortunate that criticism of the Internet has been mostly muted. Now that we realize wats we can do with the phones we carry, get ready for another wave of hysteria.

re: #597 Great White Snark

We’ve looked in Northern CA, but not LA or the surrounding areas. We visited SF and went north and stayed in Crescent City a few years ago and I fell in love. I will try shifting south, I just think The Husband doesn’t want to deal with LA traffic. And honestly, The Kid is super NOT ready for driving there either. Are there any particular areas you’d recommend off the beaten path a little?

Poor Jim. I don’t know how long he’s going to last in Milton, FL. It’s a big change from Alaska to be sure. My understanding was they moved for family reasons. I hope that family is freaking grateful.

Milton is about an hour’s drive from here. It’s just W of the craziest RW town in the state.
