Shootings in Baton Rouge: Three Police Officers Killed, Trump Immediately Exploits It

US News • Views: 38,457

I’m afraid we have more bad news from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where three police officers have been killed and several others wounded in a shooting. There appear to have been three suspects involved, and one has been killed in a shootout with police.

CBS News posted a video in which you can’t see much, but you can hear the gunfire.

There isn’t much information out there about the suspects yet, but Donald Trump is already trying to capitalize on this attack for political gain, as always.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but please note that the suspect being black does NOT rule out sovereign citizen involvement.

Obviously, Donald. We need more guns. We still don’t have enough to make us polite.

Trump is correct that a lack of leadership in the GOP is preventing us from implementing sensible gun control laws.

If the shootings weren’t race-related, that probably means the suspects are white.

Or whoever it is was shooting at someone of the same ‘race’ and police got caught in the middle?

No, it does look like the police were the targets - reports say it was an “ambush.”

This is what America looks like when people have complete and utter unfettered access to as much firepower as they wish. When will all these good guys with guns start stepping up?

re: #11 Charles Johnson

No, it does look like the police were the targets - reports say it was an “ambush.”

Not to mention, unless the police presence is really heavy, it’d be hard for “getting caught in the crossfire” to result in three dead and three wounded officers. You’d expect more civilian casualties, or maybe one officer wounded or killed.

They’re too afraid of getting shot by the bad guys with guns, or confused for a bad guy with a gun and getting shot by a good guy with a gun.

Supporters of presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump will be holding an “America First Unity Rallyon July 18. The event, which will be hosted by Citizens for Trump and longtime Trump adviser Roger Stone, is being billed as “a massive victory rally & parade celebration of Mr. Trump’s nomination.”

The “America First Unity Rally”, or when abbreviated, “The America FU Rally”. Brilliant job, idiots.

Cleveland Police Officer on Baton Rouge Shooting: Obama ‘Has Blood On His Hands’

Very mixed bag there. Been arguing that one elsewhere. CL mentioned one report, the gunfight started first and then the police rolled up on it. I’m not saying that’s it, just that it’s still that confusing early time before we know much beyond the location and numbers shot of killed. Just because of Dallas, waiting to see how many were really involved.

Then they say “nothing to do with race” i.e. it’s probably white dudes. So, now one reactionary friend suddenly changes tone to the weather outside and how beautiful it is to live in Colorado.

Hmm… Guess that outrage dried up quick

Edit: It’s commentary on how fucked-up we are as a culture that there’s a twelve-hour rule where nobody knows if a mass shooter was a robber, a nutcase, a terrorist, or just some guy walking around with a rifle. Best fucking country in the world, kids! SMH.

I said it earlier in the last thread. No one controls guns in this country other than the NRA. The people we vote for, the people we put in place to protect us…they have no control.

What good is a Governor if he can’t protect people asking for protection? And, it is the police asking for protection.

From that article:

This is not the party of Abraham Lincoln anymore. It is the party of Donald Trump. It has traded statesmanship for xenophobia,” he said alluding to Trump’s ban on Muslims. “It has traded free markets for protectionism. It has traded the higher principles of our better angels for the belief in party identity politics. That is why they are getting zero percent of the black vote in Pennsylvania. That is why you’re going to continue to see this kind of race-baiting approach to politics. I think it’s completely true that this is the end of the party of Lincoln.”

Historical ignorance on steroids. The Party of Lincoln was for high tariffs to protect Northern industry from British competition. It was the Democrats—mainly the Southern Democrats, who were essentially a separate party—who supported free trade, so they could buy British manufactured goods cheap.

Sovcits (sovereign citizens) are folks who think they’re above the law and that the federal government isn’t legitimate. They are in and among the Bundy ranch militia gun nuts and there’s crossover with various other extremists.

Sovcits also regularly harass government officials at all levels of government, engage in lawfare, refuse to pay taxes (regularly file bs lawsuits over taxes that are routinely thrown out for nonsensical claims), and stockpile guns. Lots of guns.

THIS. I mean seriously, the Muslim community (worldwide) is expected to assist—and in fact has been assisting—in trying to help identify & stop some of its members, especially youth, from turning to violent extremism. How about if instead of doing that we stop and every time something happens we just say, “So sad, what a tragedy. We’re gonna pray for the the victims & their families.” Then refuse to admit there’s any sort of problem or make any other effort to change things.

Everybody would be totally cool with that, right?

lawhawk  Jul 17, 2016 • 1:50:02pm

From SPLC re: sovereign citizen movement:

In December 2003, members of the Bixby family, who lived outside of Abbeville, S.C., killed two law enforcement officers in a dispute over a small sliver of land next to their home. And in May 2010, Jerry and Joseph Kane, a father and son sovereign team, shot to death two West Memphis, Ark., police officers who had pulled them over in a routine traffic stop. Later that day, the Kanes were killed in a fierce shootout with police that wounded two other officers.

The sovcits have killed repeatedly targeted law enforcement.

They don’t care about law and order and consider themselves a law unto themselves.

I was just going to say that.

Sovereign Citizens Movement: Recruits

In the late 2000s and early 2010s, most new recruits to the sovereign citizens movement are people who have found themselves in a desperate situation, often due to the economy or foreclosures, and are searching for a quick fix. Others are intrigued by the notions of easy money and living a lawless life, free from unpleasant consequences. Many self-identified sovereigns today are black and apparently completely unaware of the racist origins of their ideology. When they experience some small success at using redemption techniques to battle minor traffic offenses or local licensing issues, they’re hooked. For many, it’s a political issue. They don’t like taxes, traffic laws, child support obligations or banking practices, but they are too impatient to try to change what they dislike through traditional, political means.

It’d be kinda funny if the DNC had The Fonz or Richie Cunningham speak, but Chachi doesn’t deserve that kind of response.

When they had a number you could dial to say if you wanted Happy Days to be run Chachi-nated or De-Chachi-nated, I always voted “De-Chachi-nated”.

You can’t help but notice when people insist “they” as some community or vast religion condemn it or fix it or help more, those people are never satisfied. You know how futile it has been in the past to post links, facts to the contrary. In Islam, it’s trivially easy to find Imams and spokespeople to say those words. Of course the FBI must be discreet about the help they do get, damnable catch 22 there. Flip that coin to the right and meet darvo. Also saw this at the height of the Catholic child abuse by priests issue in the media. Catholic friends who are as kind as anyone could hope for just aghast, rendered mute by the sheer ferocity of trolls. Ugh.

Not surprising. The internet facilitates self-recruitment by people who would have in the past had to go to a metting. So Black people who would otherwise find first hand what “sovereign citizens” are really for, don’t really know. Not to mention there are probably some groups who are looking to branch out beyond the usual white “sovereign” in order to grow their numbers. Numbers count, and if you’ve exhausted the usual sources of membership…

Totally delusional and paranoid this concept. If the citizen is a “sovereign” then how could they possibly live and work in a society that requires compromise in order to function? If you are sovereign, and so am I, who decides conflicts?

I am kinda wondering how much the delay in actual info from the police is them scrambling to build a narrative how they are going to explain this after most of America Wingnuttia thinks this was BLM either doing it or stirring it up?

They’ll slap their foreheads, say “OMG, I totally get it now. That instant reaction and assumption, that’s what we’ve been doing to black people. Now we see how wrong we’ve been, we’ll never do it again.” And they all lived happily ever after.

Updated from WSJ:

Three officers were killed and three others were injured in Baton Rouge, La., following a shooting incident Sunday morning, authorities said.

The alleged gunman, who was killed by police, has been identified as 29-year-old Gavin Long, according to a person briefed on the investigation. The suspect was from Missouri and was affiliated with an antigovernment group called the New Freedom Group, the person added.

Two others detained for questioning in the shooting were captured across the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge, the person briefed on the investigation said.

The shooting occurred at about 9 a.m. on Airline Highway near Old Hammond Highway, a commercial area of the city, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office. Numerous officers from that agency and the Baton Rouge Police Department suffered injuries and were taken to local hospitals, the sheriff’s office said

True, but Arsenal Inc. still makes decent-quality 5.45mm AKs the are for sale in the US.

They also make AKs that the US has supplied to the FSA in Syria (some of which have ended up in the hands of Al Qaeda’s Jabat Al-Nusra) and they have also been purchased by the government of Iraq for military service there.

re: #323 Decatur Deb

Never mind—Bulgarian.

They also make grenade launchers, and those are also in use in Syria and Iraq:

Images and video of FSA-aligned Syrian rebel units fighting in the Aleppo area, shared on social media platforms, as well as images of weapons captured by Iraqi security forces during the advance to Fallujah, have shown the use of the Bulgarian Arsenal MSGL revolver-type grenade launcher by various groups in the region. In addition to the MSGL, Iraqi security forces also seized a Sterling type submachine gun (at right in above photo) in one recent incident. This may be a craft-produced copy, and is fitted with a large, craft-produced suppressor.

The Arsenal MSGL is a low-velocity revolver-type grenade launcher feeding from a 6-round cylinder, with an integrated ladder-style sight and removable front grip. With a weight of 6.53 kg (unloaded) and an overall length of 764 mm with the stock unfolded, the MSGL provides a relatively lightweight capability to rapidly employ multiple munitions of various types out to 400 meters. It is capable of firing a wide range of low-velocity 40 x 46SR mm ammunition up to 105 mm in overall length, including high explosive, high explosive fragmentation, screening/marking smoke, riot control agents, sound/flash, less-lethal impact, and more. The MSGL are packaged and shipped in boxes containing 5 units.

Arsenal also produces a variant of the MSGL, the MSGL-L, which has a longer chamber length and is thus capable of accepting 40 x 46SR mm cartridges with an overall length of up to 135 mm. As a result, it is capable of firing specialised rounds such as the Arsenal 40 x 46SR mm RLV-TB which features a thermobaric projectile. Whilst the perspective of some of the imagery makes positive identification of every example difficult, the models pictured in this post appear to be the standard MSGL.

It remains unclear how these weapons found their way into Syria and Iraq. The abundance of Bulgarian weapons in use by US-supported FSA units may suggest that the examples documented in Iraq were obtained by IS via battlefield capture from FSA forces in Aleppo, and later transported to IS positions in Iraq. Arsenal 40 x 46SR mm fired cartridge cases - marked to indicate production in 2014 - were documented by ARES in February 2016, which may further indicate that MSGL grenade launchers documented in Iraq originated in Syria.

I went to Turkey in 1979. Spoke with a guy at a bar who said, ‘That’s a terrible movie. It portrays all Turks as violent. I want to kill the man who made it.’ His English was good. His sense of irony, maybe not so good. He also said, ‘Don’t go to the Bazaar. Too touristy.’ We saw him working there the next day.

A Milwaukee police officer was shot in a “vicious” attack early Sunday as he sat in his squad car while colleagues investigated a domestic disturbance call, an official said.

The suspected shooter, identified by police as a 20-year-old West Allis man with two felonies on his record, was found dead in a nearby yard, they said.

Kansas City local reporters showed up at the apparent last known address of Long and were met with someone carrying a long gun or a AK-47 type weapon telling the media to leave them alone. This was around 4:30pm CST. Police were called and the area is now cordoned off. Reporter for local ABC affiliate is upset that Police have not yet called for an Operation 100, there was an ice cream truck cruising the area and the Police aren’t talking to the press but told them to move away. Then the reporter claimed the media was just there so the family could make a statement although the media isn’t sure if the current residents are related to the shooter or not.

Very interesting. Rachel and Bryan Williams are on at the moment and they just showed the layout of the stage for the RNC at Quicken Arena.

The stage is along the one side of the basketball court instead of one of the ends of the court. Like most concert stages would be positioned. And the stage is big and wide.

This layout cuts a lot of seating in the arena. I’d say by 25% or more.

Is it being done on purpose for optics? Maybe small attendance expectations playing a part?

Just making observations and asking questions.

Of course, it opened at number two in the country pulling down $46 million…losing only by 10% to the captive audience built into a family movie like Secret Life of Pets.

And if I may say, it’s a wonderful, hilarious movie. Not a perfect film, but the audience at the showing this morning was laughing a lot, and after the post-credits scene, almost everyone spontaneously yelled out, “If someone asks you if you’re a god, you say YES!” so that was pretty amazing, too.

When contemplating a protest vote in favour of tearing up the system, which is what Mr Trump’s candidacy has come to represent, some voters may ask themselves what they have to lose. (That, after all, is the logic that drove many Britons to vote for Brexit on June 23rd.) But America in 2016 is peaceful, prosperous and, despite recent news, more racially harmonious than at any point in its history. So the answer is: an awful lot.

Bush’s campaign, but I’ll be really surprised if there aren’t Buchanan Moments every day of the convention, if not during every speech. It’s going to be several long days of wingnuts screaming about how much they hate Hispanics and African-Americans and Muslims and LGBT people.
