Video: GOP Convention Prayer - “Our Enemy Is Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party!”

Hypocrisy cubed
Politics • Views: 35,261

Anyone still remember something known as “the separation of church and state?” Well, the Republican Party has been working non-stop for years to erode this wall of separation put in place by the founding fathers, because they know when you need to manipulate people into working against their own best interests, there’s no better tool than religion.

But you’ll never see a more graphic demonstration of the conservative movement’s contempt for the US Constitution’s Establishment Clause than this “prayer” delivered — actually, screamed — today by Paster Mark Burns, a nakedly political and utterly hateful rant presented as an “invocation.”

Hello, Republicans! I’m Pastor Mark Burns from the great state of South Carolina! I’m gonna pray and I’m gonna give the benediction. And you know why? Because we are electing a man in Donald Trump who believes in the name of Jesus Christ. And Republicans, we got to be united, because our enemy is not other Republicans, but is Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party.

Let’s pray together. Father God, in the name of Jesus, Lord, we’re so thankful for the life of Donald Trump. We’re thankful that you are guiding him, that you are giving him the words to unite this party, this country, that we together can defeat the liberal Democratic Party, to keep us divided and not united. Because we are the United States of America, and we are the conservative party under God.

To defeat every attack that comes against us, protect the life of Donald Trump. Give him the words, give him the peace, give him the power and authority to be the next president of the United States of America. In Jesus’ name—if you believe it, shout “Amen!”

You may recall it was only a few months ago that the right wing media and Republican politicians threw a huge tantrum when Hillary Clinton said this during a debate:

ANDERSON COOPER: Which enemy that you made during your political career are you most proud of?

CLINTON: Well, in addition to the NRA, the health insurance companies, the drug companies, the Iranians; probably the Republicans.

“How dare she call us enemies!” they exclaimed before collapsing upon their fainting couches.

Now, here’s a right wing religious personality openly calling Clinton and the entire Democratic Party “enemies,” on stage at the Republican convention. The hypocrisy is unbelievable, and yet… par for the course.

Wow. Heck of a standard you’re holding him to, Mark. I sorta figured Trump thought the religious figure was named Joobus.

I would have said we were only a step away from Republicans calling for liberals to be criminalized and declared non Americans and traitors…but they have already done that.

Trump has name recognition and years of exposure that most other pols simply do not have. He is banking on that and the 42% automatic base he can expect for just being the GOP nominee.

With Dems, it hinges on GOTV and Trump does not have the organization to do that.

You’re talking about trying to sway people who have been watching two hours of Fox News every day for the last twenty years. Thirty seconds of paid TV time can’t outweigh nearly a million minutes of what they think is “neutral” coverage.

Especially when nearly every “mainstream” journalist thinks it’s his duty to destroy Hillary Clinton… why? To balance the scales for Watergate? To complete the work they thought they’d accomplish against Bill? To make up for W’s failings?

In his journal, Schwartz wrote, “Trump stands for many of the things I abhor: his willingness to run over people, the gaudy, tacky, gigantic obsessions, the absolute lack of interest in anything beyond power and money.” Looking back at the text now, Schwartz says, “I created a character far more winning than Trump actually is.” The first line of the book is an example. “I don’t do it for the money,” Trump declares. “I’ve got enough, much more than I’ll ever need. I do it to do it. Deals are my art form. Other people paint beautifully on canvas or write wonderful poetry. I like making deals, preferably big deals. That’s how I get my kicks.” Schwartz now laughs at this depiction of Trump as a devoted artisan. “Of course he’s in it for the money,” he said. “One of the most deep and basic needs he has is to prove that ‘I’m richer than you.’ ” As for the idea that making deals is a form of poetry, Schwartz says, “He was incapable of saying something like that—it wouldn’t even be in his vocabulary.” He saw Trump as driven not by a pure love of dealmaking but by an insatiable hunger for “money, praise, and celebrity.” Often, after spending the day with Trump, and watching him pile one hugely expensive project atop the next, like a circus performer spinning plates, Schwartz would go home and tell his wife, “He’s a living black hole!”

I do not recall seeing in my lifetime any nominee who had major party figures - Ex-Presidents, Senators, Congressmen, former Cabinet Secretaries - all openly opposing him and declaring they won’t vote for him. Even many of those who say they support him, I suspect, will either vote Clinton, or Johnson, or not vote at all, and hope that he doesn’t win.

The pandering b*st*rd will sell Jesus Christ out to a lying, cheating, misogynistic, homophobic platform-supporting, divisive know-nothing. Shame on him. If he thinks Trump really cares anything about him other than how he can use him to achieve a goal, he’s the biggest tool in S.C. If he also thinks that going to the RNC Convention to support Trump is going to make more of us blacks vote for Trump, he’s the biggest tool in America. Burns is why I don’t listen to other so-called prominent blacks like Cornel West and Ben Carson—-their only interest is in themselves. Gotta flog the horse-race narrative. I don’t think it’s personal for most of them, and I think they would be attacking Trump with great urgency if he were in the lead. Not because he’s a lecherous racist toad who never met a fact he couldn’t run away from, but because he was in the lead.

We have an ad-driven for-profit news media in this country, and they know they can’t do anything if they can’t keep the lights on.

You can’t run ads when you’re hurting for money. Trump took to Twitter the other day to blast HRC for the ads she’s running. It’s his own fault he’s not bringing in the big bucks. OMG. What King said is (paraphrased cause I was too aghast to remember actual words) — of course he only panders to white people, of course that’s all he caress about. White people built civilization. White people made all the contributions to the world. Nobody else ever did anything useful unless at the direction of white people.

Has Trump even read “Art of the Deal?”

It took Schwartz a little more than a year to write “The Art of the Deal.” In the spring of 1987, he sent the manuscript to Trump, who returned it to him shortly afterward. There were a few red marks made with a fat-tipped Magic Marker, most of which deleted criticisms that Trump had made of powerful individuals he no longer wanted to offend, such as Lee Iacocca. Otherwise, Schwartz says, Trump changed almost nothing.

In my phone interview with Trump, he initially said of Schwartz, “Tony was very good. He was the co-author.” But he dismissed Schwartz’s account of the writing process. “He didn’t write the book,” Trump told me. “I wrote the book. I wrote the book. It was my book. And it was a No. 1 best-seller, and one of the best-selling business books of all time. Some say it was the best-selling business book ever.” (It is not.) Howard Kaminsky, the former Random House head, laughed and said, “Trump didn’t write a postcard for us!”

The frightening thing I take from both observing him in the wild, plus Josh Marshall’s excellent posts, and the New Yorker and Buzzfeed articles is his division of the world into Good Guys and Enemies, and which category you’re in can change in a second.

He demands loyalty while having no compunction about screwing people who helped him, and he’s vindictive. So, his supporters should not trust that he’ll do ANYTHING for them, and his opponents? Jesus, the man would have the power of the Federal Government in his hands.

Great article, this is how it ends.

Schwartz told me that he has decided to pledge all royalties from sales of “The Art of the Deal” in 2016 to pointedly chosen charities: the National Immigration Law Center, Human Rights Watch, the Center for the Victims of Torture, the National Immigration Forum, and the Tahirih Justice Center. He doesn’t feel that the gesture absolves him. “I’ll carry this until the end of my life,” he said. “There’s no righting it. But I like the idea that, the more copies that ‘The Art of the Deal’ sells, the more money I can donate to the people whose rights Trump seeks to abridge.”

Schwartz expected Trump to attack him for speaking out, and he was correct. Informed that Schwartz had made critical remarks about him, and wouldn’t be voting for him, Trump said, “He’s probably just doing it for the publicity.” He also said, “Wow. That’s great disloyalty, because I made Tony rich. He owes a lot to me. I helped him when he didn’t have two cents in his pocket. It’s great disloyalty. I guess he thinks it’s good for him—but he’ll find out it’s not good for him.”

Minutes after Trump got off the phone with me, Schwartz’s cell phone rang. “I hear you’re not voting for me,” Trump said. “I just talked to The New Yorker—which, by the way, is a failing magazine that no one reads—and I heard you were critical of me.”

“You’re running for President,” Schwartz said. “I disagree with a lot of what you’re saying.”

“That’s your right, but then you should have just remained silent. I just want to tell you that I think you’re very disloyal. Without me, you wouldn’t be where you are now. I had a lot of choice of who to have write the book, and I chose you, and I was very generous with you. I know that you gave a lot of speeches and lectures using ‘The Art of the Deal.’ I could have sued you, but I didn’t.”

“My business has nothing to do with ‘The Art of the Deal.’ “

“That’s not what I’ve been told.”

“You’re running for President of the United States. The stakes here are high.”

“Yeah, they are,” he said. “Have a nice life.” Trump hung up.

Schwartz can understand why Trump feels stung, but he felt that he had to speak up before it was too late. As for Trump’s anger toward him, he said, “I don’t take it personally, because the truth is he didn’t mean it personally. People are dispensable and disposable in Trump’s world.” If Trump is elected President, he warned, “the millions of people who voted for him and believe that he represents their interests will learn what anyone who deals closely with him already knows—that he couldn’t care less about them.” ♦

They’ll do anything it takes to increase the size of their bank account and to be able to “rub shoulders” with the “in” crowd. F*ck -em, f*ck ‘em all. Every one of theYm.

You’ve set a pretty high bar for him, Majii—to be the biggest tool in SC, he’s going to have to climb over some pretty serious hardware!

BTW—I am waiting for the day you forget some of the **s and let it all hang out. ;)

If/when he gets called out on this, he’ll probably come up with some insanely broad definition of “western civilization” but not broad enough to include the ME or Africa.

Israel is probably the only ME country to have the honor of being Western in his eyes.

re: #43 sagehen

I remember doing Black History Month when I was teaching. Each day in February, one of my students would read a black history fact on the school’s PA system. One year I decided to focus on black inventors. I’ll never forget that after one presentation, one of the assistant principals, walked down to my classroom, knocked on my door, and asked me whether the fact presented that morning was accurate because he thought a white male had invented the automatic shoe laster. In order to shut him up quickly, I handed him the book opened to the page where the information was. After reading it, he got the strangest look on his face, turned and headed back to the office. He never came down to my classroom to challenge any of the black history facts I presented that year or in any future year while I was working at the school. Steve King reminds me of that guy.

Steve King is dumber than dirt. He needs to be studying history instead of running his mouth. Hell, the shoes he’s wearing are mass produced with an automatic shoe laster which Jan Matzeliger, a black man invented, and if he ever wears glasses, he can thank the Muslims who invented the lens. If he’s ever been hospitalized, he can thank Muslim doctors who first came up with the practice of emphasizing the importance of cleanliness in helping patients to recover from illnesses more quickly. Those guns he’s always pimping for the NRA had their beginning in China. The world is as advanced as it is today, not because of the contributions of one group, but because of the contributions of many groups.

You’re talking about trying to sway people who have been watching two hours of Fox News every day for the last twenty years. Thirty seconds of paid TV time can’t outweigh nearly a million minutes of what they think is “neutral” coverage.

Your estimate is pretty far off. I have elderly relatives who literally have Fox News on all day, all night. From the time they get up in the morning, to the time they go to sleep, to the time they get up and fiddle around in the night, they are constantly bombarded with “the Fear that Feels Good” from America’s most dangerous and stupidest propaganda network.

According to Bavaria’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, the attacker was a 17-year-old Afghan citizen.

I think they’re in full-on Take Ball, Go Home mode. The dead-enders that got swept up in the excitement of the revolution!!!1 are, generally speaking, not the sort with the patience and passion to actually carry on. If they were, they probably would have already been engaged voters.

GOPers have special rules and exemptions for themselves. If a Democratic presidential candidate had a wife with pics like Melania’s in print and on the internet, we’d never hear the end of it. I was shocked when I read a few days ago that the Trump Campaign’s plan is to transform her into the new Jacquelyn Kennedy. Jackie Kennedy had class stamped all over her and bred into her DNA while Melania has something stamped all over her, alright, but I won’t go there. It makes no sense to me to try to make MT the new JK, especially when JFK was a Democrat, and we have been told by today’s GOPers that a Democrat can’t do, and has never done, anything right.

According to NY Magazine, Rupert, James, and Lachlan Murdoch hired a NY law firm to investigate Carlson’s allegations. The law firm has reported back to the Murdochs, and it is being said that they think the best thing to do is give Old Roger the heave ho. I I think this is a CYA move by the Murdochs. The only point of disagreement among the three was/ is when to push him out the door, before, during, or after the GOP Convention. I also read at TPM earlier today that the law firm is interrogating Fox employees at its NY office because Fox News might be bugged. I had read a few years back that Ailes had the entire joint bugged because he’s so paranoid. Something else that was mentioned was that the law firm is also going to conduct an investigation into those at Fox who provided vigorous support for Ailes. The article further stated that some pro-Ailes employees at Fox are extremely worried. I remember reading that James and Lachlan Murdoch do not like Roger Ailes. This just might be their chance to get rid of his butt.

Sure, she was a model, but some of the outfits she posed in I would not classify as being ladylike. They were just downright sl*tty. There’s no other word for it. Lots of women model, but not all of them model in outfits like some of those I’ve seen Melania wear. If I were a man running for POTUS, I wouldn’t want pics of my wife floating around dressed in some of the skimpy outfits I’ve see MT wearing. There’s classy, and then there’s trashy.

Nothing to do with Saudis. The office of the FLOTUS is one of detente. Worldwide detente.

I picked the Saudis because that clan of dysfunction is the poster child of ultra-conservative nonsense. As far as the job of FLOTUS being one of detente, diplomacy requires both sides being open and if conservative countries can’t get over some old pictures, then that’s their problem not ours. If she (or someone similarly situated) is respectful in her dealings with foreign dignitaries, that’s what matters.

Hell, didn’t Republicans bitch about Hillary changing the role of FLOTUS because she had the audacity to have a career beyond being a politicians wife?

I had a great system that served me well for many years. I’d keep a running mental average of all the polls I would see, figure that was 2% pessimistic for the Democrat, and I was always right on. Then 2004 happened. I thought it would be close, but Kerry would win. Actually I had it dead even, but that’s the way it was moving. Now the polls just tell the people who bought them what they want to hear. They’re all Unskewed™. A pox on them all.

In the 40+ years I’ve been voting, I’ve never been polled, and I imagine there are millions of others who have never participated in a poll, either.

The polls, properly compiled and analyzed, are actually pretty good predictors. Sam Wang of Princeton and Nate Silver of 538 did an excellent job in 2012. They both pretty much nailed it, that Obama was going to win, because he’d been consistently ahead where he needed to be.

The mistake is in believing any one poll over the others, because it says what you want it to say, or dismissing the ones that say discouraging things without a good reason.

Right now, the thing I see is that Clinton has always been ahead of Trump. Even the FBI report didn’t put him on top. The other thing is the large number of ‘Christ, I wish there was somebody else to vote for!’ voters, so that neither candidate is anywhere close to 50% - I think the best I’ve seen for Hillary is 47%.

If I read the favorability and ‘I’ll never vote for X under any circumstances!’ polls correctly, I think Trump has a hard ceiling below 50%, possibly below 45%. With Clinton, there are fewer, ‘Oh, HELL no!’ voters, and more ‘Do I HAFTA?’ types, so her ceiling is higher.

I can already picture the RW complaints about the DNC when they start up next week. You can bet they’ll complain about how scripted it is, how they’ve squelched dissent and have an authoritarian bent all because Hillary controls everything about the party.

Never mind that the DNC is a lot more disciplined (or likely to be disciplined) than the GOP is with the Trump shit show ongoing. The DNC for all its faults will do more than just showcase Hillary. It will highlight up and coming politicians, the future of the party, and will give them key spots.

You know, the ones the RNC is filling with Scotty Baio and Antonio Sabato Jr. and Duck Dynasty.

I disagree. How will the FLOTUS be received in countries that first ladies might have to go? How will it reflect upon the United States in conservative countries (South America…the Middle East)?

I understand the sentiment, and I always said I don’t care who the POTUS is fucking as long as it isn’t me, but this is a step too far for me.

What someone does at home, in the privacy of their own home, is one thing (e.g., who someone powerful is fucking). This is different.

I wasn’t trying to unskew any polls. I was stating what I think based on my experience, observations, and what actually happened in those two elections. I distrust polls taken this early in election years is the point I was trying to make. It had nothing to do with trying to unskew polls.

I think he (he?) was just reacting to the ‘I’ve never been polled’, because that’s what you’ll here from Conservatives when the polls show them losing, and they’re JUST PLUM CERTAIN!!!! the polls are wrong - They make up the numbers! I’ve never been called! Any of YOU ever been called?

Don’t know if you caught the other comments and responses, but the band is a group of musicians that work with G E Smith…who led the Saturday Night Live band for a long time and played with Hall & Oats, etc.

I posted a quote from him in an earlier thread in which he said that he kept saying “no” until they made some obscenely huge offer, at which point he thought about his daughter’s future and giving a well-paying gig to some friends in need. Nothing to do with politics; it’s about the work.
