Melania Trump’s Speech Plagiarized Michelle Obama’s 2008 Convention Speech

Compare the video above to the transcript below, and make up your own mind. I think the similarities are close enough to be more than coincidence.

Melania’s version:

From my young age, my parents impressed on me the values, that you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect.

They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily lives. That is a lesson that I continue to pass on to my son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.

UPDATE at 7/18/16 9:20:03 pm by Charles Johnson

Melania Trump told NBC News she wrote the speech mostly by herself.

Trump has posted a statement about Melania’s speech at his campaign website that makes no mention of the plagiarism:

Well. Melania didn’t copy word for word. Some similarities though from what I noticed with a cursory search/comparison of the two transcripts. Granted, I’m on an iPad and it’s not too convenient to compare the two speeches.

Why is the MSNBC panel so eager to declare Melania Trump is a “victim” of a speechwriter? Why is it impossible that she did it herself?

So who gives a crap if a speechwriter did do it? Aren’t these supposed to be real great winners who win at hiring great people, the very best people, believe me!

Don’t you mean “Forgot to credit Kinnock once out of a hundred times”? Sorry, but I’m still steamed about that. Joe was my man in ‘88.

Oh, but it was played up by the Times (because that was the one paper I read every day, religiously) that Kinnock had PLAGIARIZED ohhh how bad.

(Just as a side note, it wasn’t Joe Biden who caught a lot of flack back in 1988 when campaigns came to law school to recruit law students—it was the rep for Al Gore. Everyone was on the guy about Tipper and the PMRC. Al didn’t do so well there.)

Just about to start work. Been keeping a tab on the goings-on in Cleveland. Twisted shit.
As for the wingnuts down here and their ignorant spoutings against Muslims I’ve observed that they have a similar weakness in reasoning when it comes to vehement disagreement from those who hope to appeal to sanity.
They immediately cry that they’re being censored when nothing of the sort is happening. In their minds any sort of dissent, especially pointed dissent, is the same as having their original point suppressed. Then they tsk tsk us liberals for standing against their right of free expression.
Plus they have the same reaction to intimations of bigotry and racism. But if it quacks like a duck…

I’m glad this shitpile failure of a campaign was able to end my night with a little levity after what was frankly a very scary and disturbing mid-evening.

Of course Trump’s wife plagiarized an Obama speech. It would have been shocking had it been any other way! That’s just, like… how this works. Everything exploding outwards in all directions at the speed of light.

And the best part is, no matter how fast Republicans run, they’re all going to get hit by it.

“The DonaldTM has surrounded himself with politically inept and sloppy yes-men.”

I think we should add a case of extreme laziness to politically inept and sloppy yes-men [and women.] Although GOPers ridiculed Obama in 2008 about being a community organizer, they could use some of his organizing ability right about now. BO ran a top-notch, well-disciplined campaign both times. After the 2008 election, GOPers suddenly decided that they’d like to “borrow” some of his organizing/campaign techniques.

I feel her pain, but her son chose to be a mercenary at a tremendous annual salary and the Republican controlled Congress chose to cut the State Department’s security budget that left him and the other three dead men vulnerable.

These are comments on a message board. Other than the stories by Charles and others who make blog entries, nothing else here should be taken seriously Nobodys in public saying this. If anybody here including me had a chance in a serious way to discuss trump in public, there is plenty of the mans own actions to take him down.

You don’t understand the Internet, do you? Never post anything you would be upset about showing up on the front page of your local newspaper, attributed to you.

I never cease to be surprised by GOPers stealing others’ work and pawning it off as their own. The way many on the right have talked about President and Mrs. Obama for almost eight years, they shouldn’t want any of their work product. The president just had an article published in JAMA, making him the first sitting president to have an article published in a scholarly journal. The darn piece has 67 footnotes. When I was growing up under Jim Crow in the South, my parents used to emphasize the importance of getting a good education, and they always used to say, “No one can steal the knowledge you possess.” This is a time that this needs to be pointed out. The POTUS and FL have been constantly ridiculed and called dumb, but at the very time Melania Trump needed to come off as a knowledgeable individual capable of being a good FL, the first thing the Trumps and their campaign staff did was “borrow” [without attribution] something from someone whose intelligence they’ve disparaged. The Trump Campaign is in damage control mode now, and I expect when he’s interviewed in the morning, he’ll do what he usually does—-he’ll lie, and his supporters will believe the lie that Melania wrote her speech herself because they, too, believe that stealing someone else’s work product is “no biggie.” A pox on all of their houses.

She probably did write almost all of it herself. I have a hard time believing that the Trump campaign, running on a shoestring budget as they are, has tasked a “team of writers” with helping her. I’m guess she just googled Michelle’s speech and used it as a template.

I understand what you’re saying, and I agree to a certain extent, but on the other hand, I don’t like frauds. The Trump Campaign is claiming MT has a degree in architecture, but she doesn’t. After the claim was made, I did a bit of research and discovered that she did attend college but dropped out to pursue a modeling career, which is OK. Lots of people do that. I don’t think she’s a dumb person. I just don’t appreciate her knowing she didn’t write the speech all by herself but telling us that she did. She could have written her own speech . She’s smart enough, but she didn’t. That is fraudulent behavior, and there’s no excuse for that, especially from someone who wants to be the wife of a high-level government official. She could have said she had ideas and sought some assistance from a speechwriter, and that would have been that. It’s the dishonesty that rubs me the wrong way.

Realistically, the percentage of the populace who watched the whole day of the convention is very small, and all of them would be True Believers anyway. So the number of people aghast enough at the horror show to change their vote is minuscule.

OTOH, the number of people who will hear about this is very large, and it will create a really bad impression. This kind of bumbling incompetence turns off a lot of people who “don’t care about politics”.

I think we can trust the Clinton campaign to highlight the worst-sounding parts of the convention and spoon-feed the voting public the true viciousness of it—they have enough material from this one day to last till November. This plagiarism bullshit is the kind of thing that’s simple enough for the MSM to deal with, so let them do it.

We make the mistake of assuming that it is the media’s job to report news in a balanced and informative manner. It is their job to sell advertising time. The filler they put in between ads is there to attract viewership and increase the market value of the product they are selling.

Trump is ratings gold. But news networks are starting to realize that he is just as profitable when they are trashing him as when they are fawning over him, and I suspect that the scales will soon tip against him.

Dr Lizardo  Jul 19, 2016 • 2:59:31am

Amid the ongoing post-coup crackdown in Turkey, it’s looking like now even that visa-free travel deal between the EU and Turkey may now be in doubt:

European Commissioner Guenther Oettinger has said he did not see the European Union granting Turks visa-free travel this year - as agreed in a migration deal - due to Ankara’s crackdown after a failed military coup.

“The draft law (on ending visa requirements for Turks) is being debated in the European Parliament right now,” Oettinger, commissioner for digital economy and society, told several regional German newspapers in an interview published on Tuesday.

“But I predict that we won’t have regulation on visa-free travel before the end of the year,” said Oettinger, an ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the key driving force behind the migration deal with Turkey.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan must address the EU’s concerns regarding the principle of the rule of law, he said, adding: “And that’s not what it’s looking like at the moment.”

m.todayonline.com

And from the same article, it looks as though Turkey can soon kiss it’s EU membership dreams goodbye if they do indeed reintroduce the death penalty.

The broad post-coup crackdown and calls to reinstate the death penalty for plotters drew concern from Western allies who said Ankara must uphold the rule of law in the country.

“The death penalty is irreconcilable with our order of values and our treaties. No country can become a member state of the EU if it introduces the death penalty,” Oettinger said.

Erdogan has said there could be no delay in using capital punishment after the failed coup attempt, adding the government would discuss it with opposition parties.

As far as “discussing it with opposition parties”, there’s this:

[MHP leader Devlet] Bahçeli also said that if the AK Party proposes to introduce death penalty for coup initiators, his party is ready to support it

I gotta disagree. I think this “whole kerfuffle” showcases DT’s “total lack of preparation, experience or qualification”. Trump clearly did not hire a competent speech writer, and they compounded their problems by having Melania insist that she wrote it herself. If the Trump campaign exposes the true identity of the speech writer then they have to admit that Melania had more than just a “little help”.

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if one or both of Trump’s older sons “helped” write the speech? I could easily imagine them both having graduated from college without ever having to come to grips with the seriousness of plagiarism———-daddy moneybags could have fixed problems like that for them. Anyway, if either of them is involved, it makes it hard for their campaign to find someone to throw under the bus.

It is Donald’s campaign and he did not hire a competent speech writer. That reflects poorly on him. He does not “hire the best people”. Some people are even suggesting that the speech writer intentionally sabotaged Melania. What does that say about the Donald’s judgment in hiring people? He has encouraged Melania to stick to her story that she wrote the speech with very little help. Given that his campaign is now in a difficult position to blame someone else, how does that reflect on his strategic thinking?

This whole mess reflects very badly on Trump himself and it draws attention to their attempts to portray Melania as someone more educated and accomplished than she actually is.

Better yet, when Bill Clinton makes his speech at the DNC convention next week, have him start the by reciting about 3-4 sentences from what is obviously someone else’s speech - verbatim - then stopping himself and saying “oh wait. The father of a University of Virginia graduate who enlisted in the U.S. Army after Sept. 11 and died in Iraq protecting his troops will speak next week at the Democratic National Convention.

Khizr Khan’s son, Capt. Humayun S.M. Khan, was one of 14 American Muslims who died serving their country in the 10 years after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Now Khan, whose war-hero son died in 2004, will have a prime speaking role when Democrats gather in Philadelphia, part of a diverse lineup of speakers assembled by party officials and the campaign of Hillary Clinton to promote its “Stronger Together” theme.

re: #295 KerFuFFler

You are drawing logical conclusions. There are a whole lot of people who are incapable of doing that.

While the Olympic torch was being carried through the Brazilian city of Joinville on Thursday, a man attempted to put out the flame with a fire extinguisher.

Granted, I was as surprised as anyone about the similarities with Michelle’s version, but she probably got copies of previous first lady speeches and read through them all for examples of the key points: life experience, family values, memorable lesson from daddy-o, etc.

You know who gave a shitty speech? Besides Giuliani and his red-meat jizzfest? Pig lady Joni Ernst…as the hall emptied so people could get back to their hotels in time for House Hunters International, she increasingly echoed nonsense as the acoustics changed by the minute.

Greets and saluts from Day 2 of the RNC, which should be just as fascinating a train wreck as day 1.

It’s therefore time to play who said it better?

This is a compare contrast test, but we all know the answers.

Melania plagiarized both Michelle Obama and Rick Astley in last night’s speech, but the GOP insists that Melania is the more authentic and heart-felt of the speeches. It was huge.

The GOP spent the day yesterday claiming that US security is threatened by Hillary and Democrats and that we’ve got to do more, especially having a president recite radical Islamist terrorism 3x (the Betelgeuse rule).

Never mind that Rudy had only good things to say about Hillary when it wasn’t an election year. Or that the GOP has repeatedly found Hillary didn’t do anything wrong re: Benghazi. That didn’t stop them from trotting out the same tired nonsense, because it sells to the GOP voters.

Meanwhile, the GOP keeps claiming that America is less safe, less secure, cops are being killed and targeted more than ever, and not a single one of those claims is objectively true.

Then there’s the not insigificant fact that if a GOP says the exact same thing that Democrats, let alone the President, they’ll cheer the GOPer, but attack the Democrat.

For instance, the President has made it explicitly clear he supports law enforcement in the tough job he does. The GOP turns around and claims that the President flashes gang signals, supports BLM (that they claim is a terror group), and otherwise doesn’t trust law enforcement.

The GOP constantly claims that IS is a threat and must be destroyed. They wont send the president the AUMF he requested at the SOTU last year, but insist the president act. The president, meanwhile has continued authorizing airstrikes and other actions against ISIL including from the Incirlik air base in Turkey. They think that he’s not attacking ISIL because he’s some super secret Muslim, flashing Muslim symbols or winking/nodding to the Islamists, even as Obama has gone after terrorists more than his predecessor did.

We’ll see more of this today, when the GOP claims that the economy is in shambles - the worst we’ve ever seen with the biggest debt we’ve ever had. They just have to look past the sub 5% unemployment, record DJIA and S&P500, which are all more than double the levels from when Obama took office. Add in the 70+ months of job growth, growing wages, and more people with health insurance no thanks to the GOP.

Oh, but Trump’s tax plan will add $1T in debt a year - $10+ Trillion in debt over 10 years according to the Tax Foundation, while Hillary’s proposed tax plans would reduce debt by about $190B over that same 10 year period.

This is what we face, and this is the GOP. It’s Trump’s world, and the GOP owns it.

“We oppose the use of public funds to perform or promote abortion or to fund organizations, like Planned Parenthood, so long as they provide or refer for elective abortions or sell fetal body parts rather than provide health care,” the platform says. “We urge all states and Congress to make it a crime to acquire, transfer, or sell fetal tissues from elective abortions for research, and we call on Congress to enact a ban on any sale of fetal body parts.”

Can Planned Parenthood sue for this outrageous smear. Numerous investigations have all cleared PP of these charges, so isn’t it feasible to sue over these disproven charges?

Sorry, Trump campaign. You can’t gaslight your way out of plagiarizing Michelle Obama. It’ll only make things worse.

Lying when caught redhanded is what the Trump campaign does, but this is crazy. As a rule of thumb, Trump has a harder and harder time getting away with the “nothing to see here” move as evidence becomes more unassailable, and the insult to the press’ intelligence becomes too great to bear. That’s how it’s worked with his elusive charitable donations; how it worked with “the Star of David is actually a Sheriff’s Badge”-gate; how it worked when his old campaign manager Corey Lewandowski denied battering a reporter in front of eye witnesses, and kept denying it until surveillance footage left no doubt. Here there’s no doubt from the starting line.

“The person who wrote the section on Texas history would have failed a fourth-grade exam. … There are no women cited or quoted in the entire chapter.” — José María Herrera, assistant professor of education at UT-El Paso

That’s about the most authentic thing the Trumps do. Everything about them is padded - their bank accounts, their tales of charitable giving, their tales of overcoming adversity, and their intention to help average Americans cope in a “tough” economy.

re: #370 lawhawk

Oh…you…Benghazi!

Ha! Take that!

I thought this was interesting.

Hayward’s broader point, one too often forgotten by commentators eager to find major meaning in everything, is what perhaps helped drive unrest in the upper part of Manhattan in the ’60s. While it’s not uncommon to suggest poverty is the root of frustration within the citizenry, Hayward suggested that “revolutionary turmoil is often fueled more by rising expectations [my emphasis] than repressive conditions.”

And, the American Business Model is to ever present that which we don’t have. Bigger, Better, Stronger, Faster, Smarter and Sexier.

ObserverArt  Jul 19, 2016 • 8:11:19am

I’ve been reading through the overnight section of this thread. I see some are saying Melania said she wrote the speech so she is responsible and other feel sorry for her.

I am thinking she was told by Mr. Hands-all-over-His-Campaign Donald Trump told her over and over again to say she wrote the speech.

Did he know it was partially plagiarized? Who knows at this point. It wouldn’t be surprising if he did and was behind what parts were lifted. I bet there are people right now going over and over the rest of the speech and seeing if any of the remaining parts were also borrowed.

Trump like to show people his trophy wife and tell everyone how intelligent she is. He most likely told her to say she wrote it so that everyone would credit her for being so smart. So, in that sense she was probably going along with it all because I have a feeling she does whatever he says because of the wrath of Trump when you don’t.

This to me is no different than all the crap he pulls from “sources” and tells everyone he saw it, there are reports, etc., etc. Like the Muslims celebrating in New Jersey as the Twin Towers fell. Like not know David Duke. Damn, there are just so many examples.

And just like those examples the Trump supporters will make excuses, forget they happened and they will still vote for him.

This is the sad state of American politics.

There are some who would say, at this point, that Kasich or Rubio, or Jeb! would have been polling double digit leads over Hillary had they been nominated.

Maybe. But I’m not sure that’s true. Trump has so effectively dumbed down the political process that anyone affiliated with him, even an opponent, suffers the ill effects of that distortion. That is, Trump is so bad, he drags Hillary down with him.

And that’s the context I see for Melania’s plagiarism. Normally it would be something that—had Michelle Obama done it for instance—would stigmatize a campaign. But this year, this candidate? From the day Trump announced we have been on a steady downward spiral of derp that shows no sign of reaching bottom.

I had a talk with a friend from my childhood. She was all up about Black Lives Matter and I reminded her about how we grew up —just outside of Detroit in an affluent White Neighborhood in the 1970’s.

We grew-up on the other side of racism. We know what was said in our homes. We know the hate is real and what people are capable of.

She had to concede the point.

The idea that all this is in the past —as so many seem to be able to delude themselves about —is just that —a delusion. It’s a constant challenge.

566
b_sharp  Jul 19, 2016 • 9:18:17am

Some of the responses to the recognition that Melania plagiarized are as ridiculous as her having to steal points from a hated librul. One that strikes me as particularily silly is the claim the words don’t matter because she was “…poised, smart, articulate on that stage…” “Cleary, she is articulate, doing a very good job…”

Quotes from David Brody:

“…the long term story here, Pat, is that the reality is that Melania Trump gave a very good speech last night. She was poised, smart, articulate on that stage on Monday night …”
“Cleary, she is articulate, doing a very good job — and they need help among women voters and she can be a key part of that,”

I’ve said for a long time that wingnuts are far more concerned with the narrative, more concerned with how they look than with the substance of any message. This is a great example.

Brody applauded her “great” speech and dismissed the “quote ‘plagiarism’ charges,” saying that “the long term story here, Pat, is that the reality is that Melania Trump gave a very good speech last night. She was poised, smart, articulate on that stage on Monday night and what that means, Pat, going forward is that Melania Trump needs to get out on the stump.”
