Trump Campaign Denies Melania Plagiarized Michelle Obama, Blames Hillary Clinton

The party of personal responsibility
Politics • Views: 37,861

Last night I predicted the Trump campaign would try to deny Melania Trump plagiarized Michelle Obama’s speech for the 2008 Democratic convention, and that’s exactly what Trump’s campaign adviser Paul Manafort is doing today. But he’s even going a step further and blaming the whole controversy on Hillary Clinton.

“There’s no cribbing of Michelle Obama’s speech. These are common words and values that she cares about her family, things like that,” he continued when asked by anchor Chris Cuomo about the plagiarism allegations. “I mean, she was speaking in front of 35 million people last night. She knew that. To think that she would be cribbing Michelle Obama’s words is crazy. This is once again an example of when a women threatens Hillary Clinton, how she seeks out to demean her and take her down. It’s not going to work.”

Here’s a video of the two speeches side by side, making the plagiarism painfully obvious.

Repost from downstairs:

This Melania thing reminds me of some of the idiots I went to high school with that would take a lengthy passage from another source, change like 4 words and claim it as “original work”.

They didn’t get away with it either.

A single word or two, Hillary didn’t invent. However, the more words you string together in a specific order the less likely it is someone else will come up with that exact sequence of words. String a few sentences together and the likelihood goes down even further.

These people have no morals.

And once again, they think appearance is more important than substance.

“I mean, she was speaking in front of 35 million people last night. She knew that. To think that she would be cribbing Michelle Obama’s words is crazy….”

All they seem to know is how to appeal to motives, even when talking about their own.

Well, that should work out just fine, then.

There’s an opportunity here to brand Trump using one of his favorite shorthands - the negative hashtag.

In this case: #StupidDonald - as in “Who pays a speechwriter $100K for a cut&paste plagiarized disaster? #StupidDonald - because he can’t tell the difference”

Bonus: Stupid is one of those simple words that will really get under Donald’s skin. And it will also accurately describe his fans. They’ve got a monumental inferiority complex. They know they’re stupid. And they resent smart people.

That’s why the GOP is the “Stupid party” now (h/t Bobby Jindal on that one)

There was no really good way for Herr Trump to address this. The only other options are to accept that Melania is a plagiarist and try to argue that that’s ok or admit she didn’t write the speech in order to foist the blame for nicking a whole section of Michelle Obama’s speech onto some hapless intern.

The politically smart way to address this is by saying something like:

Melania’s speech included some universal truths, ideals that form the basis of the American Dream. Those ideas are why the United States of America is the greatest country in the world today. It is also something that we all agree with, black, white, Asian, gay, straight, rich, or poor.

But that would mean you would actually have to admit that the Obamas are not sent here to destroy America and the world. Of course, there’s the uniquely Trumpian problem that if he were to say something like that, he’d then be faced with “if your word is your bond, why did you screw so many contractors out of money by filing for bankruptcy on multiple occasions?”

Well, Obama’s words are sometimes OK, but it’s his body language. You can just tell something’s going on there. He says OK words but his body language is he wants to kill cops and hates America.

Sorry for the OT, but if you’re in the NYC metro area driving, consider the rest of your day to be screwed, especially if you’re heading upstate (Rockland/Westchester), and need to take I-287, I-87, or the GWB.

The crane collapse at the Tappan Zee Bridge has blocked all lanes, and likely will remain closed through the PM rush (going on a limb to say that given how other crane collapses are handled/investigated/removed).

If you need to get to NYC from Albany, you’re best bet is taking Rt 17 to Rt 4 from I-287/87 to the GWB. Or do the reverse.

Cars could take the GSP or the Palisades to get down to the GWB.

If you’re in Westchester trying to get over to Rockland (or vice versa), the Newburgh-Beacon (I-84) or Bear Mt Bridges are your alternatives.

Injuries were reported as well, but right now news is sketchy.

The crane was working on the new Tappan Zee bridge.

Things to keep in mind as media outlets report on the RNC (and soon the DNC):

marketwatch.com

Of particular note - the RNC is incredibly white. Titanium white white. There’s almost no minorities among the delegates. This is a party completely out of touch with who Americans are. The GOP loves to claim that they stand for all Americans, but their party is a bunch of older white people who fear everything that makes the nation great - our diversity.

That contrast will be evident when the DNC holds theirs next week.

We have never seen anything remotely like that in a convention, and it bodes bad things to come over the next couple of days.

I predict Trump will go full frontal Robert Mugabe and announce he will have Hillary arrested and charged the day after he is sworn in. Josh Marshall expounds upon the observations Charles was making in real time last night, and he nails it.

Even more disturbing, numerous speakers from the dais, including some of the top speakers of the evening, called for Hillary Clinton to be imprisoned. At least two - and I think more - actually led the crowd in chants of “lock her up!” There has never been any evidence of criminal activity on Clinton’s part. An investigation with a lot of pressure to find something amiss concluded that no charges should be recommended against her and that no prosecutor would bring charges against Clinton for anything connected to her private email server.

It goes without saying that it is a highly dangerous development when one presidential nominee and his supporters make into a rallying cry that their opposing candidate should be imprisoned. This is not Russia. This is not some rickety Latin American Republic from half a century ago. This is America. For all our failings and foibles this is not a path we’ve ever gone down.

This is not a disagreement about a matter of law: it is a demand for vengeance and punishment, one rooted in the pathologies of the current Trumpite right and inevitably to some extent about the fact that Clinton is a woman. If you have a chance rewatch the speeches by Rudy Giuliani or even more ret. Gen Michael Flynn. These are not normal convention speeches. It is only a small skip and a jump to the state legislator in West Virginia who demanded Clinton by executed by hanging on the National Mall. In such a climate, don’t fool yourself: worse can happen.

The Drumpf campaign has always been about revenge and reclamation. Drumpf is a catalyst not a cause. It is all borne from the social and cultural transformation that is currently changing the country. Hillary Clinton has plenty of flaws. But they have no necessary or clear connection to the venom and increasingly violent anger directed against her. She’s simply the symbol and target. “Lock her up!” “Lock her up!”. This is an American political convention. She’s the opposing party nominee. This is not normal. Not normal at all.

Now the question is, what the hell can we do about it?

In 2003, when Colin Powell gave a dramatic presentation to the UN which seemed to detail the extent to which Iraq had WMD, it turned out that much of that presentation was based on information lifted from a number of sources, particularly an article in the Middle East review which was actually detailing their military and WMD capabilities from before the first Gulf War. When I pointed this out to fervent wingnut Iraq War supporters, their reply was, “Even if it was lifted from someone else, it’s still true.”

And then there’s this:

Donald Trump has also dealt with claims of plagiarism in his business dealings. A New York Times report from last June outlined how the Trump Institute, a seminar business to which Trump lent his name, promised to offer the Manhattan billionaire’s business secrets but instead sold customers materials with language lifted from a 10-year-old real estate manual.

Read more: politico.com

I still find myself wondering if the Trump kids are partially responsible for the plagiarism since the whole family seems to be trying to manage the campaign largely themselves. That might explain why it is taking so long for a fall guy to emerge. They sure would have to pay a lot of money to expect a person to take that big of a career hit.

We’ve been talking about relocating to Norway since Trump announced last year (wife has dual citizenship).

If this country is insane enough to elect Trump, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want to be a part of it any more.

Yep. We’re exploring plans to move to either Colombia or Chile. Chile would be my first choice, as I love the wine region, and recent visits have demonstrated that this is a country with a huge upside. And tons of really good Carmenere wine.

Bonus: far enough south so that we’ll be out of the worst of the radiation belts in the northern hemisphere.

Lidane  Jul 19, 2016 • 10:19:30am

So let’s review. In one day, the Republican party:

—Had a sitting Congressman (Steve King) offer up outright white supremacy on TV
—Had a floor fight among delegates over a roll call vote on Trump
—Saw entire state delegations walk out of the convention
—Had a couple of has-been actors spout the equivalent of Breitbart comments on TV
—Exploited the mother of one of the Benghazi dead for their own gain
—Had their nominee call into Fox News and give an interview while the Benghazi mom was speaking, so her entire speech was wasted time
—Had a retired general lead a chant on national TV to “Lock her up!” from the podium, which is unprecedented in American politics
—Had Rudy Giuliani give a crazed, unhinged speech that involved yelling and flailing a lot

And that’s all BEFORE Melania spoke. The fact that her speech was plagiarized is the LEAST of all the problems the GOP had yesterday, but it’s the only issue guaranteed to get Trump’s attention because of course it is.

And somehow, it’s all Hillary’s fault. What. The. Fuck.

Veteran GOP pollster John McLaughlin has a recent history of missing the mark by a wide margin in his top races. Now, it seems some Republicans have had enough.

This convention and this campaign cycle will be studies decades from now. We are seeing 45 years of right wing white pathology, grievance and cynical manipulation all coming to a puss filled head on the polity of America.

Blame the liberal media, demonize African Americans, blame the Mexicans, applaud for the acquittal of one of Freddy Grey’s murderers, call for the opposing candidate to be jailed for a murder she cannot sanely be blamed for…and then crib the speech of the current FLOTUS and say that the media actually all work for the opposing candidate when called on it.

Taking a moment to look at what Rod Dreher is muttering about:

But this is the difference between science and Scientism. Scientism is the ideologically charged fallacious belief that science is the only legitimate way of knowledge. Greer leads his essay off by a typically arrogant, typically ill-informed political remark by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Rod is hurt that Neil deGrasse Tyson doesn’t believe in the ghost story he pimped from that writer that our Charles was mocking last week.

Milo’s already filled out the form 10 times now.

The reason they took away his check mark is that they decided no real name is spelled that way. I know every consonant is pronounced “y” in Greek in recent centuries, but it’s spelled with different letters. I think that “Y” should be a “G”, like in “gyros”.

Anyone familiar with race driver Danica Patrick? Many IndyCar (CART) race fans used to call her princess sparkle pony when she created a furor by finishing 5th in the Indy 500 and the media treated it like she won the damn race. That was all before she got into NASCAR.

RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer went on CNN today to give the most unbelievable defense of Melania Trump’s speech plagiarism so far.

He said that it was 70 words in a 2000-word statement, and the lines were similar to words said by musicians. And then came this:

“Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said ‘This is your dream, anything you can do in your dreams you can do now.’ I mean, if we want to take a bunch of phrases and run ‘em through Google and say, hey, who else has said them, I could come up with a list in five minutes. And that’s what this is.”

Wolf Blitzer said, “The similarities are pretty stark.”

Just…god help me, interact with too many goddamn people who believe one black person doing something damns the entirety of black people, one Muslim doing something in Europe means the entirety of the religion is THE problem and the ONLY problem, and/or immigrants are all megascum and need to be stopped now, and that if you disagree with any of that, not only are you possibly the most evil person in the world, but every single thing you agree with must be evil as well.

God help me how many people I’ve seen run screaming rightward on that basis alone. ANd it hurts, it hurts so goddamn much, and again, I’m not even Black, Gay, or Muslim, the unholy trinity of ‘other’ in this country.

We finally have wild peregrine falcons and merlins (also called a pigeon hawk although it’s actually a falcon) here after years of placing nesting pairs.

We don’t however, have big rocks like the one in your picture.

The plagiarizing BS is embarrassing. As said though, I wish there was more attention paid to the spittle soaked xenophobia the convention offered to. At the same time, I realize such attention would more than likely positive rather than shaming like a sane country would.

And there are people who really look at it (as some posters did here) and say “I see some similarities but not plagiarism”.

And there were those who looked at a black man in a tree with his hands tied behind his back and said “Looks like a suicide”.

Seriously, this pisses me off:

Born on April 26, 1970 in Slovenia, Melania Knauss began her modeling career at the age of sixteen. At the age of eighteen, she signed with a modeling agency in Milan. After obtaining a degree in design and architecture at University in Slovenia, Melania was jetting between photo shoots in Paris and Milan, finally settling in New York in 1996.

She dropped out after one year——-which is fine except that she lies and says she has a degree. The hypocrisy of the GOP tolerating this intentional lie while tormenting Warren over a possibly mistaken belief about her own ancestry is simply galling.

Hahahaha, the “My Little Pony” defense:

Appearing Tuesday on MSNBC, Republican National Committee communications director Sean Spicer quoted the children’s television show, as well as singers Akon and John Legend, to explain why portions of Trump’s convention speech lined up so closely with Obama’s words, arguing that an online search for any line in the speech would turn up similar phrases.

“Melania Trump said, ‘You work hard for what you want in life.’ Akon said, ‘Work hard for what you get in life.’ John Legend said, ‘Work hard.’”

“You’re quoting Akon and John Legend?” asked MSNBC’s Craig Melvin.

“Hold on, it’s getting better,” said Spicer. “Melania Trump said, ‘The strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.’ Twilight Sparkle from ‘My Little Pony’ said, ‘This is your dream, anything you can do in your dreams.”

Of course short phrases like “work hard” are going to appear all over the place and are not in themselves indicators of plagiarism. The longer the passage, the more likely plagiarism has occurred. The mathematical probability of Melania (or whoever) writing two paragraphs that are almost identical to Michelle’s are so slim that responsible pundits of all backgrounds have conceded that this was indeed plagiarism.

It was a video hawked by “Christian” sleaze bags Falwell and Robertson in the 90’s about the Clinton’s murdering people in Arkansas.

To promote the film, Falwell aired an interview with Matrisciana, who was silhouetted to conceal his identity as he pretended to be a journalist who was afraid for his life.[4] Matrisciana later acknowledged that he was not in any danger, but that the interview was staged for dramatic effect at Falwell’s suggestion.

Earlier, I ordered a creme brulee at a cafe, and it was brought out to me - I was sitting outside. Anyway, I noticed some movement, and behold! a tiny little baby spider had floated onto the top of it, LOL. I coaxed him on to the spoon and moved him away.

Good creme brulee, BTW. Well, minus the tiny baby spider, that is.

Reminder: Texas has a Republican legislature. In fact, the GOP have a supermajority with only token Dem opposition. There is no reason why Abbott should ever have to bypass his own party.

re: #340 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Finished my workout, pulled on a shirt.

A spider ran down my arm.

The house is still standing, so I think I’ve been remarkably restrained in my response.

I never knew this actually happened. From 2014:

Fire officials said a West Seattle man on a quixotic quest to rid his home of a vile spider ended up torching his abode on Tuesday evening.

The man told firefighters that he saw a spider in his laundry room and decided the best way to take care of it was with a lighter and a can of spray paint.
He set his wall on fire, then the blaze quickly spread. […]

According to the article, it wasn’t the first time someone burned their house down trying to kill a spider. O_O

Seriously, this pisses me off:

She dropped out after one year——-which is fine except that she lies and says she has a degree. The hypocrisy of the GOP tolerating this intentional lie while tormenting Warren over a possibly mistaken belief about her own ancestry is simply galling.

Apparently one can just purchase a degree From University in Slovenia, just like one can from Liberty U or Regents…

This one was big (nickel sized, if that reference makes any sense for you) and ON ME which are two sins that I will not stand for.

Glad you saved the baby spider though.

I’m wondering if the rabbi will find himself like the preacher from Blazing Saddles:

“Son, you’re on your own.”

I am not sure what exactly a “hardcore radical leftist” is, but I don’t feel insulted.

re: #303 Stanley Sea

Still wondering what happened to that Mark Burnett produced video of Melania as Jackie Kennedy.

He probably didn’t pay him.

Not sure what’s going on:

…when Mother Jones contacted Burnett’s spokeswoman, she said that Burnett was not working on the convention where Trump will be crowned. She noted that she had checked with Burnett and that he was not involved. Then this week, the New York Post, citing one source, said that Burnett had indeed been recruited by Trump for the event and that the convention would present Melania Trump as the new Jackie Kennedy.

Following the New York Post article, Burnett’s rep checked again with the mega-producer and subsequently told Mother Jones that Burnett has nothing to do with the GOP convention.

Somebody’s full of it, and I don’t think it’s Mother Jones or Burnett’s rep.

re: #302 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

She should have stolen from a lot more speeches. You know the old saying: “Steal from one or two other writers, it’s plagiarism. Steal from three or more, it’s research.”

I’ve been waiting for one of the lizards to post Tom Lehrer and Lobachevsky:
“Plagiarize!
Let no one’s else’s work evade your eyes!
Remember why the good Lord made your eyes, so don’t shade your eyes,
But plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize!
— Only be sure always to call it please ‘research’…

Tom Lehrer - Lobachevsky (with lyrics) ‘1953
