Jesus fucking Christ.

Could these Republican ass jets be any more obvious about what’s going on here?

It’s a malignant elitism, where the few in the elite are the only real people, and everyone else is an untermensch.

I think we’ll see final solution proposals from the GOP in the next few days, as opposed to my previous estimate of the next few years.

wrenchwench  Jul 20, 2016 • 1:40:46pm
And now, here’s Newt Gingrich saying nobody cares if Melania Trump plagiarized her speech because she’s “stunningly attractive.”

Which is also the reason Gingrich doesn’t care if his wife cheats on him. Or gets cancer or something.

The importance of the plagiarism story is that it reveals the incompetence and dishonesty of Trump’s campaign. That Melania’s speech was partially plagiarized was not all that important in itself except she had said beforehand that she had written it herself. Then they started coming up with all sorts of excuses and obfuscations.

If an incompetent speech writer composed the entire speech and was responsible for the plagiarism it would not have reflected badly on Melania (except for the fact that she had already claimed to have written it). The incompetent speech writer version of the story chiefly makes Trump and his team look pathetic.

The lying and the spinning make them all seem particularly stupid.

Got to admire the GOP blitzderp strategy. They are sustaining a pace of buffoonery that simply outpaces the mockers.

Monday: “Look at how awesome this speech was! Melania wrote such a great speech, showing she’s just as smart as any First Lady. She’s speaking from her experiences and…what, plagiarism? No, that’s just attacks from Hillary!”

Tuesday: “It wasn’t plagiarism, and even if it was, it doesn’t matter because it’s a small portion of the speech!”

Wednesday: “Okay, so it was plagiarism, but who cares? DAT ASS!”

13
JasonA  Jul 20, 2016 • 1:49:29pm

To be fair, the insinuation that it could be an issue if Melania was unattractive does not stray very far from what we know of the far-right mindset.

14
Rocky-in-Connecticut  Jul 20, 2016 • 1:49:41pm

At least Newt is finally being honest, getting to the very root of the right wing psyche. Physical attractiveness is the most important quality a woman can have, everything else a very distant second. A woman’s main value is how many heads she can turn, not how her policies, educational achievements and experience can translate into sound policy and meeting established goals.

We see Newt’s and the rest of the right wing’s priority concerning women all over Fox News and in interviews like this. It follows that we have a candidate whose spouse is described by their own supporters mainly as a beautiful woman with the implication that should be good enough. We should be grateful for Trump to provide us with a beautiful potential First Lady.

Wrong.

The lying and the spinning make them all seem particularly stupid.

It’s the leap-before-you-leap-before-you-leap-before-you-look aspect that’s particularly horrifying. I don’t want to sound unreasonably cynical, but I don’t expect politicians (never mind their spouses) to write their speeches themselves, and I do expect them to push little blocks of text into their speeches, and I do expect some random schlub to take the fall.

But I don’t expect it’s-not-copied-well-My-Little-Pony-said-it-well-Melania-meant-it-and-Michelle-didn’t-Melania-wrote-it-a-new-speechwriter-wrote-it-never-mind in the span of 48 hours.

Can we have Rove back if the worst happens and Trump wins? Karl ran things grossly and evilly, but… they ran.

re: #10 KerFuFFler

It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up that causes problems.

We have a Presidential candidate who is unable to admit fault or apologize, so I expect we’ll see more of the same. A million excuses why no mistake was made, blaming others for any controversy, a behind the scenes scramble to find a way to avoid any appearance of having made a mistake. This is the modus operandi of Trump. When all else fails, find a scapegoat to take the fall.

Now image a situation much more serious than plagiarism. We’ve seen from example how the situation would be handled. Scary. Very scary.

I don’t do facebook or twitter and my google plus is for private posting only.

Some people don’t leave much of an online footprint. I am sure Amazon and Google know just about everything about me from my browsing and purchase histories, but that isn’t easy for an outsider to access, aside from that you won’t find much of anything.

For what it is worth Time magazine did some actual reporting and contacted two of the schools listed in her bio and they have confirmed that she did indeed attend the School of American Ballet and the University of Utah. Unless the campaign is stealing someones identity, she is a real person.

(for those that don’t know professional wrestling, this is one of the more infamous moments, the debut of the “Shockmaster.” You can actually hear several people off camera bemoaning the situation)

The GOP in Cleveland won’t be happy until they bring a gallows on stage and Trump hangs an effigy of Hillary. Then the media would spend the rest of the night marveling about the great showmanship of Trump.

From Wikipedia’s entry on Integrity:

Important virtues of politicians are faithfulness, humility.[10] and accountability. Furthermore, they should be authentic and a role model. Aristotle identified pride (megalopsuchia, variously translated as proper pride, greatness of soul and magnanimity)[11] as the crown of the virtues, distinguishing it from vanity, temperance, and humility.

Donald Trump doesn’t embody any of these virtues one bit.

It’s so simple even a Republican can do it:

re: #176 Bill and Opus for 2016!

To me that video footage very much looks like the Rage Furby was moving toward Michelle Fields to accost her and her fiance’ moved between them to shield her. Since Chuck has ramped up his stalking of her to being in her physical presence, and his history of threatening behavior, she needs to get a retraining order filed against him ASAP, otherwise the potential of physical harm being done is VERY real.

The right wing hate mob has taken their Twitter stalking and harassment from the virtual world into the real one. No good is going to come from this.

I might be full of shit here, but the one thing all these categories have in common is an implied power differential in the encounter. Taking advantage of young and old women that might be ‘vulnerable’ and being forced to watch your spouse have sex with another man. Republicans obsess over power constantly, so for some it could very well seep into their sexual fantasies.

Lunchtime conversation with Trump fan co-irker today.

He’s not worried about Trump not knowing how to govern, because Trump is a smart guy who will surround himself with a cabal of smart guys like Gingrich and Giuliani who will run things by committee (but not like a Democrat committee, a smart one!). When asked pointedly what positions go to which smart guys, he said “Who cares!”. I also got to hear about how DT’s son is really, really strong. Like he has a future in politics. (hooray)

This is supposedly somebody intelligent who has two sons in the Army. I wasn’t quick enough to point out that he was essentially describing Imperial Rome.

I don’t understand why this is such a constant obsession of Republicans.

It’s a modern way to say “N-r lover”. It’s a reference to a particular genre of pornography which features married white women having sex (sometimes group sex) with large black men while the husband watches and/or films.

It’s one of those terms that says much more about its user than it does about its target.

Rather go back to the version where the ghostwriter is real, and her work on the campaign is an FEC violation.

Preferable. Does kinda make me wonder why she’s so furtive though since in her letter she was so anxious to set the record straight. The Trump campaign isn’t setting her up for interviews? Weird.

So the Cleveland police basically arrested someone for flag-burning, which as we all know is protected speech under the Constitution. There’s far too many police officers that clearly disdain the highest law in the land.

They’re the special people, laws don’t apply to them.

It will be interesting to see what Ted Cruz says. During the GOP primary, Cruz’s strategy was drafting in the wake of the Trump bigotry express, hoping to pick up all those sweet bigot votes without ever getting his hands dirty.

How did that work out for you, Mr. Cruz? Your reward (which is both huge and classy) is to be obliged to suck up to Trump at the convention.

I can’t believe he actually wants tRump to win. His best bet for 2020 is to have Hillary win and then hope for a recession or some disaster. Following a disastrous four years of tRump is going to be a hard sell for any Republican.

This is assuming there even is an election in 2020, of course—not a sure thing.

It’s a fine line though. If he pisses off Trump supporters, they may hold it against him in the 2020 primary should Trump lose the general election this year.

The other problem for someone like Cruz is what happens if Trump loses big anyway? Will that force the base (who finally got their guy nominated rather than the “establishment guy”) to moderate or stay home in 2020? If that’s the case, Cruz’s particular brand of tent revival conservativism won’t hold up well (similar to Huckabee going from 2008 next in line to 2012 no show to 2016 afterthought).

That’s what I am thinking too. He doesn’t have a lot of friends in the party so if he pisses anyone off they would already hate him probably. He does have his fans like the Texas contingent, and he probably controls over 30% of the delegates so he can surly turn this into a run.

What else he is good for except for fulfilling prophecy?!

goddamnedfrank  Jul 20, 2016 • 4:40:09pm

Let me get this straight.

Melania gave this McIver lady a bunch of quotes from Michelle Obama’s speech.

McIver took those quotes and wrote up a speech in which many of those quotes were either copied verbatim, or with minimal alteration.

Melania then got the speech back and started practicing it, but somehow didn’t notice that the quotes she hand picked were still in there.

Then Melania told Bret Baier that she mostly wrote the speech herself, but forget that part because reasons.

Then the shit hit the fan and everyone on team Trump was like “what plagiarism I don’t see any plagiarism these aren’t the droids you’re looking for holy shit balls Hillary is behind this entire thing you liberal dicksucks are inventing a controversy.”

Now they’re they’ve got this McIver lady to take the blame and we’re all supposed to act like Melania was just helpless and had no capacity to recognize that the speech she commissioned contained the very cribbed elements she selected?

I mean, mostly I’m just like Jesus who cares Melania isn’t on the ticket. On the other hand the entire mess has become a microcosm for the overall dysfunction, dishonesty and ineptitude of Trump and his campaign in general.

re: #272 CleverToad

OT: In regards to Apollo Day, the spouse is happily re-watching the 1969 moon landing footage on a much larger TV screen that he and I watched on our respective TVs at the time. (He thinks they had a color TV by then, mine was still B&W.) Will be mildly disappointed if the President and Sec. Clinton don’t make some mention of the anniversary today. Will be totally astonished if the loudly anti-science Republicans say a word about it.

Thanks for the reminder. Had totally forgotten today is the anniversary—how is that possible? Me, I was sitting on the floor of an apartment near the Haight in San Francisco with a half dozen other hippies. I think it was turning twilight there at the start, then dark by the time of the EVA. Much weed passing between us, which led to a magic mood. I kept looking at my friends in the flickering light of the B&W TV and feeling the illusion that we were prehistoric people gathered around a fire in a cave, all sharing a shamanistic vision of the distant future (it was really decent weed). At the same time I had the powerful impression that virtually every human being on earth was watching or listening to or at least aware of this moment, and proud of it, graced by it.

How we got from then to where we are today is a whole nother thing.
