Live Video From a Dying Party: Featuring Disgraced Former Speaker Newt Gingrich

It’s all about fear
Politics • Views: 41,520

YouTube

It’s Newt Gingrich’s turn in the spotlight, and he’s kicking it off with the same fear-mongering we’ve heard from almost every other GOP convention speaker.

He hasn’t started attacking Hillary Clinton yet, but it won’t be long.

UPDATE at 7/20/16 7:54:45 pm by Charles Johnson

Ted Cruz refused to actually endorse Trump during his speech, and this is the photo of the night:

This just showed up on CNN’s liveblog feed. Ted Cruz’s wife just got kicked out of the Republican Convention.

TeamCNNPoliticsJuly 20, 2016 7:06pm
From CNN’s Manu Raju: Heidi Cruz escorted out
Ted Cruz’s wife Heidi was escorted out of the RNC after getting heckled by Trump supporters yelling “Goldman Sachs!” - the firm that she worked for before her husband’s presidential campaign.

“I don’t talk to the media, thanks,” she responded when reporters tried to ask her a question.

The Vicious Babushka  Jul 20, 2016 • 7:53:00pm

Since Tweets are not embedding, here’s what the NYTimes reported Trump said:

CLEVELAND — Donald J. Trump, on the eve of accepting the Republican nomination for president, said Wednesday that if he were elected, he would not pressure Turkey or other authoritarian allies about conducting purges of their political adversaries or cracking down on civil liberties. The United States, he said, has to “fix our own mess” before trying to alter the behavior of other nations.

“I don’t think we have a right to lecture,” Mr. Trump said in a wide-ranging interview in his suite in a downtown hotel here while keeping an eye on television broadcasts from the Republican National Convention. “Look at what is happening in our country,” he said. “How are we going to lecture when people are shooting policemen in cold blood?”

[…]

He even called into question whether, as president, he would automatically extend the security guarantees that give the 28 members of NATO the assurance that the full force of the United States military has their back.

For example, asked about Russia’s threatening activities that have unnerved the small Baltic States that are the most recent entrants into NATO, Mr. Trump said that if Russia attacked them, he would decide whether to come to their aid only after reviewing whether those nations “have fulfilled their obligations to us.”

Um. What if Bernie pulls a Cruz stunt at the DNC next week……………

He won’t - because he has no desire to see Trump win. Here’s the thing.. Cruz knows it would be MUCH easier to run against Hillary in 2020 than an incumbent President Trump - it was a calculated move.. I don’t like Cruz.. but he is semi smart kind of guy, at times.

[A]sked about Russia’s threatening activities that have unnerved the small Baltic States that are the most recent entrants into NATO, Mr. Trump said that if Russia attacked them, he would decide whether to come to their aid only after reviewing whether those nations “have fulfilled their obligations to us.”

Clinton: With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided that they’d they go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator. Now, honestly, I will do my best to answer your questions about this, but the fact is that people were trying in real time to get to the best information. The IC has a process, I understand, going with the other committees to explain how these talking points came out. But you know, to be clear, it is, from my perspective, less important today looking backwards as to why these militants decided they did it than to find them and bring them to justice, and then maybe we’ll figure out what was going on in the meantime.

Johnson: OK. Thank you, Madame Secretary.

But after a few days, they’d keep floating back up again, far closer to President Clinton’s than I would like. So we kept brainstorming. ‘What can we do that will kill this campaign of mine once and for all?’ And we tried all sorts of things. Racism. Nazi salutes. Reneging on NATO. We even let Cruz speak. I posted the following a million years ago, last September, after the first Republican “debate,” and I’ve found no reason to change my approach since then, especially not this week:

I am clear water from a mountain spring. I am the sound of one hand clapping. I am zen itself. How did I attain this purity of soul and mind? By not watching a single second of this ratfuck. And by drinking as if I had.

As delegates began to protest, Sen. Cruz’s wife, Heidi Cruz, was heckled by Trump supporters shouting “Goldman Sachs!” and escorted out by security. Heidi Cruz, who is an employee of Goldman Sachs, declined to answer questions from reporters, saying, “I don’t talk to the media, thanks.” Cruz’s rebuke ignited a hot scene around the senator as soon as he left the stage. People averted their eyes from Cruz and his wife as they walked with their security detail on the skybox level of boisterous Republicans.
On the donor suite level, people approached Cruz and insulted him, a source told CNN’s Dana Bash. One state party chairman reacted so angrily that he had to be restrained.

ICYMI: Federal Appeals Court tosses Texas Voter ID law, citing discrimination against minorities.

Texas voter ID law violates Voting Rights Act, court rules

(TEXAS TRIBUNE) — Texas’ voter identification law violates the U.S. law prohibiting racial discrimination in elections, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday.

The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed previous rulings that the 2011 voter ID law — which stipulates the types of photo identification election officials can and cannot accept at the polls — does not comply with the Voting Rights Act.

The full court’s ruling delivered the strongest blow yet to what is widely viewed as the nation’s strictest voter ID law. Under the law, most citizens (some, like people with disabilities, can be exempt) must show one of a handful of types of identification before their ballots can be counted: a state driver’s license or ID card, a concealed handgun license, a U.S. passport, a military ID card, or a U.S citizenship certificate with a photo.

Refusing to endorse Trump is the first and only time that Ted Cruz has done something respectable in politics. I loathe Ted with the fire of a thousand suns, but credit where it’s due. That was fun. I love the fact that he went to the RNC and shanked Trump on stage.

And seriously, anyone who expected Cruz to roll over and endorse Trump is a fucking moron who wasn’t paying attention. Cruz was never, ever going to endorse the guy who insulted his wife and accused his father of killing JFK.

Ted Cruz is the unlikable asshole who was willing to let the U.S. government default to try and kill Obamacare. Twice. I don’t know why anyone was shocked tonight. It would’ve been more shocking if Ted had endorsed Trump.

Seriously. If the Texas GOP decides that he’s poison in 2018 when he runs again and they vote him out, awesome. If he runs for POTUS again in 2020 and he loses because the rest of the GOP hates him, awesome. Either way, this was a fantastic night.

Again, this is so fucking counterproductive. They shit all over their own party, twice. First by inviting Cruz and allowing him to speak when they knew he was explicitly refusing to endorse, and then second by encouraging the room to turn on him in such an ugly way. This is Day fucking 3 of their national convention, and they just burned down any notion of a once divided party unifying in solidarity for the general. Trump’s team just utterly destroyed a key moment in which the GOP could convey a sense of strength and cohesion, all out of spite.

I’m not surprised, because the entire campaign has been amateur hour from the beginning, and only defeated the rest of the field because that’s how fucking racist the GOP base is and how bad the rest of the field was. But still, today stood out as particularly disastrous, among a plethora of disasters.
