GOP Convention 2016: The Wrap-Up

Politics • Views: 50,875

There was so much insanity in Trump’s speech my brain started to shut down. But just off the top of my head — he vowed to erase the separation of church and state, reiterated his position that NATO allies will have to pay up or they’re on their own against Russia, and said he’ll “protect LGBTQ citizens from a hateful foreign ideology” — right after several speakers from fanatically anti-gay religious groups, like Tony Perkins and Jerry Falwell Jr.

It was probably the most jingoistic, nativist speech by a presidential candidate in at least the last hundred years.

And one of the most telling moments, revealing the true authoritarian appeal of this short-fingered fascist:

If this horrible display of right wing recidivism accomplishes anything, I hope it will be to motivate every liberal who witnessed it to get out and vote in November. This contest is deadly serious. Trump must be defeated.

2008 we had Hope and Change.

What does 2016 have the potential to give us if Trump wins?

Despair and Anger.

I weep for this country.

The crowd is now chanting “YES YOU WILL!”

Quite a difference from “YES WE CAN!”

Triumph of the ‘Will’?

I thought it fitting that they ended with the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” as an exit song.

Bill and Opus for 2016!  Jul 21, 2016 • 8:55:25pm

Re-posting this in the shiny new thread.

Next week, we get to hear what true American orators sound like, as opposed to the nationalistic screaming that took place tonight for over an hour.

Confirmed speakers for the DNC Convention include the following:

Michelle Obama (whose speech won’t be plagarized)
Corey Booker
Howard Dean
Al Franken
Elizabeth Warren
Bill Clinton
Bernie Sanders
Joe Biden
Barack Obama

I can honestly say that I am looking forward to each and every one of these.

Carter was liberal on some things, like the environment, but he was by no means far left.

I really don’t understand why we need to criticize Republicans who are against Trump. We need to pick our battles and embrace our allies, even if it is on one issue. Trump!

Presidential elections are about competing visions. Basically since the Comey Presser, it’s been All Trump All The Time. This week has passed with some tweets from HRC, but not much else. The Democrats have an opportunity to present a different view of America, and a different vision of the future.

I was with you originally until I really thought about it. Now it just depresses me.

This is something of a very weird election. One of the reasons a lot of attention has been paid to polls about Clinton and Trump’s favorability ratings is because this election is probably the first time in modern American politics where both nominees have been in the national public eye for 30 years. Clinton, for reasons good, bad, legitimate, and illegitimate, has very high unfavorable numbers. Which means, realistically, she has a ceiling that nominees from prior years did not have. But Trump has favorability numbers that are even worse, meaning he has an even lower ceiling.

That is a recipe for a third party run, if ever there was one.

As someone who leans libertarian, and who will probably vote for Johnson in November (please spare me the “wasting your vote” and “might as well vote for Trump” speeches), I am aware enough to know that Johnson will pull many more votes from Trump than he will from Clinton. I don’t consider that a bad thing. In fact, as crazy as Trump has been this election, and as guano crazy as the GOP has become, I want him to finish third.

The main reason I won’t get angry at you for voting 3rd party… is because you’re in a safely blue state.

If you were in a swing state, I’d be yelling at you very loudly (in NSFW language) for considering such a vote.

re: #73 KGxvi

Even if your in a blue state, not voting for Clinton is silly. Donald doesn’t just need to lose. The Republican party should be crushed with no excuses left. We don’t want them to even be able to think “we would have won if that third candidate hadn’t taken so many votes.”

Good for you for having it more or less out in the open. One of the things that mystifies me here and on other sites is the number of people who talk about relatives or friends braying rightwing nutcasery by the hour and by the carload, but who then go on to say they let it go so as not to cause some kind of familial strife. Screw that attitude. I have tons of RW nutjob cousins etc. in Texas, and I let them know exactly what I think of their views. True, a couple of them don’t email me anymore, but trust me, that’s no great loss.

What I fear is Trump somehow winning the hearts and minds…wait, not quite the right thing…winning the fear and terror of enough people to transform the landscape into something legitimately terrifying for anyone who doesn’t see ‘empathy’ as a four-letter word. Just…christ almighty. The fact that this living breathing sack of dead hyena farts is actually the nominee and has been given slavish coverage by nearly 100% of the news outlets out there, is…

One part of me looks at this and says “there’s no way this jackass can win”.

There’s another part of me, however, that wonders how many angry, scared, stupid white people there are in this country who will buy the shit Trump is selling.

That I can’t totally dismiss that second part as the voice of paranoia is legitimately frightening to me.

Its easy to have a sense of dread. Just look at 538’s poll plus model of the election, which gives Trump a 40% chance of winning; basically a coin toss. Then I remind myself that its only July and we still have the Democratic Convention to get our message out and three months for the Clinton campaign machine to vastly outperform Trump’s wreck of a campaign.

The fact that people cheer him means that democracy is as healthy as one could hope. there will always be a faction of fascists in any country. suppressing them is like the French having an academy to determine what is acceptable with the language: all it would do is make the democracy, or the language, more at risk of dying off. Our ideas next week will be better, more optimistic, sharper, far more truthful, because the speakers will have this convention and these people to use by way of example.

A longtime member of the Virginia inspector general’s staff and two independent contractors have filed a whistleblower complaint alleging their employer failed to properly investigate the death of Jamycheal Mitchell in a Portsmouth jail cell last year.

The complaint also alleges that State Inspector General June Jennings and one of her deputies have misled members of the General Assembly and violated federal privacy laws and state open-records statutes.

It was filed Wednesday by Cathy Hill, senior project manager and auditor with the Office of the State Inspector General, and consultants Ann White and William Thomas. They asked Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring to investigate their allegations and “realign the OSIG with the principles and values under which it was formed,” according to a copy of the complaint, which was obtained by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

I wonder if it would do any good at all to take a cue from the wingnuts and begin calling the media outlets, national and local, who allow this person to take so much oxygen out of the room on any given day? It seems to me that his stupid campaign wouldn’t have got as far as it has without their help. I don’t know, maybe letting them know that their stupid horse race/both sides do it shit is tiring and we aren’t watching it anymore would help. If they heard from enough people that is.

I used to think that maybe if people protested outside media outlets at the run up to the Iraq war that maybe they would have noted it and maybe fewer people would have been so gung ho, instead of mostly ignoring the big protests in DC. I don’t know anymore, but I do think Our Stupid Media is complicit in a lot of this. Not entirely, but a fair amount.

I am worried about that too. I really hope that the people who are organizing for all this take that into account. It happens at any big protest, it has since there have been protests, but how it’s handled will make the difference in how the public percieves it. I wonder what the other side has planned and if there’s any way to find out….

Democracy is not healthy when 40% is the floor of the vote for the fascist party, they have full control of the majority of the states and 60% of the dominant group will vote them. The only reason this country is not completely SOL is that minority groups make up a large enough % of the electorate that when combined with regional variances in the white vote we’ve so far managed to keep a firewall intact at the national level. If Trump wins, the best case scenario is North Carolina or Kansas enacted on a national scale.

The surest way to get the media’s attention is to choke off the obscene rivers of cash that flow during election years. That means getting rid of Citizens United for a start, via USSC or the amendment process. It’s possible that both sides might see the advantage of that.

The entire speech was a disaster and a fact checker’s worst nightmare, because it was actually easier to keep tabs on what was accurate, or at least verifiable.

Every statistic he mentioned ranged from outright lie to grossly misleading.

Let’s take just the ones that were grossly misleading. Two of those stand out.

4,000 homicides in Chicago and the 550% increase in refugees.

On the former, the influx of guns from Indiana, which has lax gun laws plays a significant role in the gun violence in Chicago. Thanks Mike Pence (at least since he was elected governor).

On the latter, we’re talking about such a small number of refugees, that any increase is going to be a big one. Going from 2,500 to 10,000 is a big jump percentage wise, but those folks get 18-24 month review before settlement in the US. They aren’t flooding in by any stretch. They are being vetted.

The Clinton campaign will be announcing their VP choice later today..

On the one hand, it’d be nice to give more time to focus on Trump’s insanity, but this also tramples over the Trump message since the tone and attention will be on Clinton - depriving him of airtime. And that’s the crux of the matter.

He craves airtime. All the nitty-gritty seriousness of governing isn’t important. He’s the ideas guy who has no ideas worth a damn - mostly because he doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about.

His supporters don’t care. David Duke doesn’t care. Schlafly doesn’t care. Hoft doesn’t care. They’re enthralled with the con artist whose speech lacked any actual positive statements about the nation - only that it’d be great with him as president.

The GOP = white nationalist party.

Think I’m kidding?

Check out who they’re retweeting now:

And they also retweeted VDare, another hotbed of racist claptrap.

This wasn’t the only white nationalist tweet to be featured on the RNC’s curated ticker during the convention. On Tuesday, a tweet from anti-immigrant hate group Virginia Dare was highlighted on the giant screens hanging in the convention hall.

Trump has himself been criticized for failing to sufficiently dissociate himself from the white nationalists who are so taken with his presidential campaign. He has retweeted posts from users such as @WhiteGenocideTM and received lavish praise from former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, whose support he eventually disavowed.

The GOP has given itself over to the white supremacists and racists, and there’s no pushback against any of this. They wont because it’s who their core voters are. Racists, hatemongers, and the fearful who’ve been fed nothing but irrational hate and fear for decades now.

Trump let them all come to the surface, and now they’re letting their racist flags show.

This has nothing to do with President Obama (other than Obama’s election and reelection sending these people into incessant rage that someone other than a white guy is occupying the White House). It has everything to do with the GOP foregoing everything that the nation stands for and fixating on delegitimizing government, up to and especially the twice duly elected President of the United States.

And they’ll continue to do so when President-elect Clinton is sworn in in January.

While being an out and out racist and never disavowing it gets you turned into the GOP kingmaker du jour in most election cycles. The MidEast isn’t the only place where a major refugee crisis is brewing - as this report from East Africa shows.

The United Nations refugee agency reports that 26,000 people have fled South Sudan to Uganda this month.

Andreas Needham, spokesman for the U.N. refugee agency, said Friday that thousands of South Sudanese have left their country since fighting erupted on July 7 between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those supporting Vice President Riek Machar. Although an uneasy peace has been established in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, the U.N. official said the flow of people leaving the country has continued.

He said that more than 90 percent of the new refugees are women and children.

The U.N. official said the new refugees report that fighting is continuing in southern South Sudan and that in the Magwi area gunmen are looting properties and recruiting young men and boys.

Supposed to get up to 100F here today…

This year our rainfall locally was a disappointment. Pretty much it doesn’t rain in this part of the country in summer (save for some mountain thunderstorms) so we are starting the hot season quite dry and it will only get worse.

Many of my favorite loquat trees from a few years ago are now gone. Some were cut down on purpose, while a couple of others appear to be dying from lack of water.

San Diego is becoming browner, drier, and quite a bit less comfortable.

But our society doesn’t deal with these big picture changes very well. Most of our activities, e.g., politics, are centered on the immediate, not the long term.

Last year was a record warm year for the Earth’s surface, by a wide margin. This year is still warmer than last year, though El Niño has waned.

None of this will register with Drumpfskind voters.

Being nakedly and inescapably authoritarian, they perfectly sum up the great paradox of this week in Cleveland—to wit, the angry delight the participants took in submitting themselves to the vulgar talking yam speaking down to them from on high.

These were not people begging to govern. These were not even people begging to be governed. These were people begging to be ruled… This was a gathering of subjects thirsting for a king…

The facts did not matter to the people here. The Voice was all that mattered. The truth did not matter. Volume was all that mattered. Reality did not matter. Fear of the imagined criminal Other mattered. Abandoned and unfocused wrath mattered. What ultimately mattered was fashioning actual freedom into a quaking shadow of itself. Biden: With regard to abortion, I accept my church’s position that life begins at conception. That’s the church’s judgment. I accept it in my personal life. If you can’t guess by now, Trump’s basically given IS their strategy between now and November. Carry out attacks and make America fearful, elect Trump who’ll go all isolationist/nativist, and leave all our allies hanging in their time of need. That’ll be the perfect recipe for IS to expand their reach, while simultaneously getting Trump to declare a war of civilizations, which also plays right into IS hands.

This is the entire terrorist playbook, and it has been since 9/11.

A wise old friend once told me that the most basic paradox in American history can be summed up in the question, “Do you govern or are you governed?”

The answer throughout the week in Cleveland was something beyond even the parameters of that question. These were not people begging to govern. These were not even people begging to be governed. These were people begging to be ruled. For all the palaver about freedom and liberty, and all the appeals to the Founders and the American experiment, this whole convention was shot through with an overwhelming lust for authority.

This was a gathering of subjects thirsting for a king.

Pence is a tea party hero, and Trump has repackaged their whole shtick.

Sure, I just would have thought the GOP would want to more visibly honor the TP in some way. Pay homage to them some how. Convention speakers are sometimes chosen specifically to represent certain parts of the coalition. Not that I particularly care, I just thought it a bit odd that the TP’s non-governmental leaders would have gotten more of a profile.

Regarding Ivanka’s dress, as someone who sews (not often in the last few decades, but still, I know the basics) that dress is hideously made. All the seams are poorly sewn and the one in back pinches at the zipper. I guess that’s what ready to wear is for the little people in her view. In my view, this is something that someone from my first sewing class made midway though.

BTW, this isn’t me being catty. This is purely a statement of fact about that dress. I think she’s a beautiful girl - outside. Inside, the jury is still out for me.

Because Drumpskind is good for ratings, American media are fixated on the dictator-wannabe.

But not only that, but the scope of discussions, the topics picked for conversations for the American consumer of “news”, is also shaped.

Often to sell the idea of FEAR! FEAR! FEAR! (immigrants mostly, Muslims also, especially Muslim immigrants.)

Yet there are problems in the world that persist, ugliness all over the place. Death and destruction that barely gets a mention in the American conversation.

Here are some examples that stood out from my cursory reading of global news streams today:

Landmines, UXOs kill 20 Cambodians in H1

At least 20 people were killed by landmines and unexploded ordnances (UXOs) in Cambodia during the first six months of 2016, compared to 11 deaths over the same period last year, according to an official report on Thursday.

Do Americans feel any culpability wrt this problem?

Next:

Armenian president calls on hostage-takers to surrender

Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan on Friday called on gunmen occupying a Yerevan police station to lay down their arms and release four hostages they seized in a bid to have a jailed opposition leader released.

[…]

Sefilian, a former military commander, has accused Sarksyan of mishandling a long-running conflict between pro-Armenian separatists and the breakaway Azeri region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

[…]

I bet most Americans didn’t even know this was happening. I certainly did not. But it’s a good example of the complexities of the world, for which Drumpfskind is totally unprepared to even investigate.

Here’s a disaster that gets only a little bit of coverage:

Children face ‘staggeringly high’ hunger in conflict-hit Central African Republic

[…]

Across the Central African Republic, up to 30 children die every day due to malnutrition, according to aid organization Action Against Hunger (ACF), which runs the unit.

Three years of conflict have damaged many health facilities or left them empty and disrupted farming in a country where three in four people rely on agriculture to survive.

Half of the population do not have enough food - a number which has doubled since last year, according to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), which said the hunger levels across the Central African Republic were “staggeringly high”.

[…]

Images of Drumpskind and Pence sitting on overly-ornate gilded chairs contrast so starkly with what many people in the world face today… but I guess that’s not our problem?

UGANDAN-LED REBEL GROUP STEPS UP ATTACKS IN CENTRAL AFRICA

A Ugandan-led rebel group operating in Central Africa abducted 498 civilians and killed 17 others in the first half of this year, a watchdog organization said Wednesday, suggesting a resurgence of the group whose leader is the target of an international manhunt.

The attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army happened mostly in the eastern part of Central African Republic and in northern Congo, according to the LRA Crisis Tracker, which monitors the activities of the rebel group.

[…]

Has anyone dared to ask Drumpfskind about the Lord’s Resistance Army? Maybe someone should ask him if he supports the LRA’s goal of ruling Uganda by the Ten Commandments?

Terrorism has a political dimension to it. A looney-tune emptying a pistol into a crowd while laughing manically is - while certainly terrifying - not a political act. Just like the loon who shot up a pub not far from here a year or so ago. He wasn’t a terrorist. But he was mentally disturbed, and the federal police were getting ready to take his firearms away.

And the long and sordid history of his shady business dealings and bankruptcies.

Hasn’t kept the usual suspects I run into (and far more of the non-usual than I can stomach) from immediately crowing “ISLAM!” and demanding not only Merkel be tried and hung but the banning/elimination of Muslims/immigrants in general. “Stop the invasion” bullshit.

I’m just exhausted by this all at this point. All this death and violence, and it’s immediately used to damn collective blame upon not only a group but anyone who doesn’t dare join in on the Two-Year Hate, along with every single thing said group and its “defenders” believe. This goddamn feeling of futility and impotence

They were too late.

I know there’s a difference by my instinctive “let this just be a rampage” reaction. I hate that I do it, but it’s there. I hope there are no more killings and the perp(s) are soon caught either way.

Honestly? What’s the difference? If I was being shot at, I would be terrorized. It appears the only time anything is labeled terrorism is if the color of the person doing it is any shade darker than me. :-(

Shooting rampages that are motivated by something other than some sort of political agenda are not considered terrorism. Sometimes people go on shooting rampages after getting fired or getting dumped for example———-personal reasons. The fact that victims and others on the scene felt terror does not make it terrorism. Shooting up a Planned Parenthood, for example, is terrorism because terror is created to further the political objective of the shooter, stopping abortions.

It occurred to me that we are spending way too much time fixated on Donald’s hair. Why does he have that ridiculous comb over? Does he think it looks good? Etc.
Has anyone thought to look at his feet? Are they cloven? I think the hair is there to distract from the traditional “catching a glimpse of his cloven hooves and realizing we are doomed” thing.

Jesus.

Anyone noticed how often Republicans say Trump will change once X happens?

Anyone notice Trump changing after X happens?

Trump was roundly criticized a month or so ago for his “If they want our protection, they need to pay us more” statements about our allies, and the excuse was that he’s new at this, and he’ll have experienced hands to guide him. And yet, here we are - he’s been nominated, and he’s still saying the same thing.

For months we heard he was just being extreme to win the Primaries, and once that was done, he’d calm down and become more reasonable. Yeah, right. How’d THAT work out?

Now, Cotton excuses Trump’s bromance with Putin, saying once he sees the intel, he’ll change his tune.

What evidence is there that he even listens to anyone else, let alone changes his tune?

You know, just a few years ago any direct connections or dealings with Russians would have been an automatic disqualifier for a presidential candidate.

Now? We are going to see, but it appears as long as you kill brown people and keep them out of America you are good to go.

Nothing against Charles and his setup here, but the spell checker just amazes me. It didn’t like “disqualifier.” I find so many times it rejects words that I am pretty sure I have right. It does keep you on your toes. I keep a tab open with freedictionary.com for quick checking when I get the doubts from this spell checker. What’s up with that?

I can’t believe how poorly fitting her dress is. I’m a fat woman and it’s possible to get nicely-made ready to wear which fit better than what Ivanka wore last night. I got some summer (nine months of the year here in Arizona) linen dresses online, they were delivered last week and are better made. Heck, one of them had covered inner seams (not merely serged). I just don’t get it…

I can’t believe that dress is off the rack, though. There is no size that will fit a large bust without being baggy all over. That thing is very fitted at the waist. I think it was overfitted so it hangs up a bit when she moves and was designed to be seen only from the front.
