White Supremacists Were Everywhere at the GOP Convention

Trump has brought the racist far right into the mainstream
Politics • Views: 66,088

The extent to which the Trump campaign has legitimized and promoted white supremacism — the real unvarnished version — still boggles my mind. I sincerely can’t understand why people are just sitting back and letting this happen. The media now treat each new revelation of Trump’s outright connections with and sympathy for these racial extremists as a sort of “ho-hum” routine thing, not very big news, let’s just move on and discuss Ivanka’s designer dress instead.

But the GOP convention was absolutely lousy with white supremacists, and not just hanging around outside. They were given press passes and convention credentials, and in at least one case actually seated in the luxury box next to the VIP section.

First, TPM reports that while Trump was giving his speech last night, the big screen above the stage displayed a tweet from a blatant white supremacist: RNC Displays Tweet From White Supremacist As Trump Accepts Nom.

The tweet came from @Western_Triumph, whose Twitter profile describes himself as:

#AltRight #ProWhite #Southern #RaceRealist #Nationalist #SlayCulturalMarxism #Trump2016 #LoveYourRace

His timeline is full of racism, antisemitism and Holocaust denial, and homophobia, of course. And at least one tweet seems to be calling for mass murder of non-whites and “race traitors.”

Also displayed on the big screen in the convention hall: a tweet from white nationalist anti-immigrant website VDARE:

This wasn’t the only white nationalist tweet to be featured on the RNC’s curated ticker during the convention. On Tuesday, a tweet from anti-immigrant hate group Virginia Dare was highlighted on the giant screens hanging in the convention hall.

Another notorious white supremacist, Matt Forney, was given a press pass by an “RNC contact” and used it to broadcast live from the convention floor on a racist radio show, Red Ice Radio.

And last but not least, infamous white supremacist Richard B. Spencer was actually given a convention credential, which you can see hanging around his neck in this photo he took with discredited far right troll Chuck C. Johnson.

Chuck C. Johnson, of course, is no stranger to white supremacism himself, as we thoroughly documented in this article last March, when Johnson was hanging around with Trump surrogate Katrina Pierson.

And white supremacist Chuck C. Johnson not only managed to get into the convention hall for Trump’s speech — he was seated in the luxury box, right next to the VIP section.

The mainstreaming of racism and white nationalism in the Donald Trump era has damaged the Republican Party’s brand for many years to come. There’s always been a broad streak of xenophobic nationalism in the Republican Party, but before Trump it was usually shoved down out of sight, with only occasional eruptions into public view. Now it’s completely out in the open, in your face.

The GOP may never recover from this.

The traitors ((( )))

That’s explicitly referring to Jews.

Fuck the GOP.
Fuck the RNC.

And I repeat my statement from the dead threat - GOP delenda est.

At this point, I don’t care if the party blows up from the inside, or everyone else who recognizes the insanity does it for them, but this party has completely given itself over to the bigot brigade and they must be stopped at all costs. Calling out the bigots and racists isn’t itself racism or bigotry. It’s rational and fact-based objective reality.

The Trump/right wing/white supremacist demonization of Muslims is part and parcel of the longstanding trend among the fringe to blame outsiders for all that ails the nation (or the world) and the solution is invariably the same each time - expulsion or worse. The RNC condoned these statements and gave life to these extremists. By giving them airtime, the RNC itself has become part and parcel of the bigot brigade.

That compares with the folks who recognize the hate and venom for what it is:

There potentially being more than one shooter certainly lends a more ominous tone to this attack. Although at least in the US premature reports of multiple shooters when in fact only one proves to be involved is a common occurrence.

I agree that the GOP is a cancer on society which much be destroyed.

At the moment, its primary effect in practice is to amplify the political power of wingnuts and bigots because of all the ‘moderates’ who supposedly are not themselves wingnuts or bigots but end up voting GOP anyway, even though the GOP is controlled by bigots and wingnuts.

Well, Trump has made everything crystal clear. It is categorically impossible to vote GOP and be a ‘moderate’ in any meaningful way.

Anyone who votes for Trump is the precise US equivalent of those ‘good Germans’ back in the 1930s that voted for Hitler because they like what he said.

re: #25 S’latch

I was trying to explain this to someone last night. This whole campaign and the lead up to it has been making the racism and hate that was kept under a rock seem normal or OK. “It’s just politics” or “Free Speech, a sign of a healthy democracy”, “don’t take it so personally, this isn’t the majority, sane conservatives will not allow this to continue the closer we get to the election”, etc. WELL? Looks like no one cared enough or had the balls to do a fucking thing about it. And now, even if these assholes aren’t in the majority, they have the tacit approval of “the establishment” and they think they have taken control of the whole party. And they have, look at who the nominee is.

I am scared we’re looking at another OKC type attack or a series of mass shootings when Hillary wins (I am remaining somewhat optimistic here). If they lose they are not going to go quietly. And with the state of police forces around the country, how protected will those of us who are not like them be?

Officials in Austin are investigating the violent arrest of a black elementary school teacher who was body-slammed by a white police officer during a traffic stop.

The investigation comes after the emergence of police video footage showing not only the June 2015 arrest but also a scene afterward, when another white officer told the teacher that cops are wary of blacks because of their “violent tendencies” and “intimidating” appearance.

“Ninety-nine percent of the time … it is the black community that is being violent,” the officer tells her. “That’s why a lot of white people are afraid. And I don’t blame them.”

That they haven’t leaked, shows that Clinton is far more disciplined than her critics would ever allow - she knows how to keep secrets, unlike Trump who couldn’t unveil his VP without massive hiccups.

Then again, it’s happening under the cloud of what is yet another terror attack in Europe, and trying to be sensitive to the timing/news cycle on a Friday afternoon means that the decision may be lost to the Friday night news dump.

Of course, it is Clinton, so every move with be scrutinized and criticized, even if it’s one that many would agree is a solid pick. Most anyone she could choose from would be a solid pick by reasonable standards. And a huge step up from Pence.

Not completely off topic, here is a new video put up by Yale on an art lecture that goes into the Nok culture, specifically the art that has been dug up:

The Nok Terracotta Enigma

Many aspects to this presentation are of interest, from art forgery to archeology.

But of relevance to us also is this is a good example of African (in today’s Nigeria) society from up to 3 millennia ago, which eventually disappeared into the sands (or mud) of time.

It’s very easy to be Euro-centric about our human past, just ask Steve King.

Also as a lesson - cultures come and go. None of them are permanent.

Politically, endorsing Johnson makes more sense. If the point is toget your supporters to vote for someone other than Trump, it has to be someone that they will plausibly vote for. Clinton’s high unfavorability is driven mostly by Republicans reeeeeeeally not liking her. Endorsing Johnson gives supporters a way out of that dilemma

American white-supremacists were, many, cheering on Brexit, and it is clear why:

Hate crime ‘still far too high’ post-Brexit - police

More than 6,000 hate crimes have been reported to police in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in the wake of the EU referendum, figures show.

There was a slight fall in reports in the first half of July compared with an initial spike in the days before and after the 23 June vote, the National Police Chief’s Council said.

But the overall level was up 20% on the same period in July 2015.

[…]

There were 3,192 alleged hate crimes reported between 16-30 June this year and a further 3,001 reports between 1 and 14 July - equivalent to more than 200 every day, updated figures show.

It was previously revealed that the daily rate peaked at 289 reports on June 25 - the day after the result of the referendum was announced.

A vote for any Not Trump is better than a vote for Trump. Both reduce his share of the vote. You are right from a Democratic perspective. But those who don’t support Clinton, whatever their reason, are not Democrats; thus, voting for Johnson also prevents her from being able to claim a mandate for policies they oppose.

That’s treating this as a relatively normal election, where half-measures of this kind could reasonably be justified.

However, we’ve just had 4 days of a hate supernova from the GOP convention. Nothing is normal in this election cycle.

I’ll give an example. I was rear-ended about a month ago. While someone else got the license plate, I described the car that hit as light coloured. The car ended up being black.

And I am someone who, because of my Autism, has the gift of an amazing memory. And I still got it wrong. I would be very wary of eyewitness reports right now.

A good example. Memory is a tricky thing; I’ve memorized the lyrics to probably two or three hundred songs as well as entire texts. But I’ve noticed I do misremember things from time to time. We all do.

Yep, Democrats are like buses (and public transit in general)—they pay attention to the needs of the underserved and get them where they need to go in order to live productive lives. They allow everyone to buy in individually (fares) and yet understand that government has to provide additional funding and assistance for a service that benefits not only the actual riders, but the communities in which they live and work.

Fuck WikiLeaks:

WikiLeaks Just Published Tons of Credit Card and Social Security Numbers

WikiLeaks firmly believes in radical transparency, the idea that the world would be better if there were no secrets. That level of transparency can be used for good, like the time the site published a video called “Collateral Murder” showing innocent journalists shot to oblivion by US troops in 2010. But not always.

The organization has also used that tradition of transparency for less just causes, like today when the site published 19,252 emails from top US Democratic National Committee members, many of which included personal information about innocent donors including credit card, social security numbers, and passport numbers.

In fact, the poors do take the bus at a very high rate (second highest use group are highly educated/environmentally concerned folks)—which is why most right-wingers want to cut public transit whenever they get the chance. They don’t want “their” tax money going to something that doesn’t benefit them directly and they’re too fucking stupid to understand that it benefits them indirectly, both by allowing people with no other means of transportation to get to work and pay taxes themselves and working in communities that they have been forced out of living in because of rising housing costs.

That, of course, will only encourage the Drumpfskindanhangers that they have chosen the right person:

Probably, but I am glad to see the editorials coming out strongly against him anyway.

The real estate tycoon is uniquely unqualified to serve as president, in experience and temperament. He is mounting a campaign of snarl and sneer, not substance. To the extent he has views, they are wrong in their diagnosis of America’s problems and dangerous in their proposed solutions. Mr. Trump’s politics of denigration and division could strain the bonds that have held a diverse nation together. His contempt for constitutional norms might reveal the nation’s two-century-old experiment in checks and balances to be more fragile than we knew.

Any one of these characteristics would be disqualifying; together, they make Mr. Trump a peril

But we cannot salute the Republican nominee or pretend that we might endorse him this fall. A Trump presidency would be dangerous for the nation and the world.

He was staked in the family business by a well-to-do father and has pursued a career marked by some real estate successes, some failures and repeated episodes of saving his own hide while harming people who trusted him. Given his continuing refusal to release his tax returns, breaking with a long bipartisan tradition, it is only reasonable to assume there are aspects of his record even more discreditable than what we know.

The lack of experience might be overcome if Mr. Trump saw it as a handicap worth overcoming. But he displays no curiosity, reads no books and appears to believe he needs no advice. In fact, what makes Mr. Trump so unusual is his combination of extreme neediness and unbridled arrogance. He is desperate for affirmation but contemptuous of other views. He also is contemptuous of fact. Throughout the campaign, he has unspooled one lie after another — that Muslims in New Jersey celebrated after 9/11, that his tax-cut plan would not worsen the deficit, that he opposed the Iraq War before it started — and when confronted with contrary evidence, he simply repeats the lie. It is impossible to know whether he convinces himself of his own untruths or knows that he is wrong and does not care. It is also difficult to know which trait would be more frightening in a commander in chief.

We’ve seen something important about mass shooting events: There are ALWAYS reports of multiple shooters in the immediate confused aftermath of a chaotic event. We’ve seen something important about mass shooting events: There are ALWAYS reports of multiple shooters in the immediate confused aftermath of a chaotic event. Sometimes it pans out once the reports are sorted by police, sometimes it is eliminated. This is why they collect and analyze facts rather than going with whatever first impressions they get from traumatized witnesses.

It is clear that Obama somehow contributed to this…

Yeah, but that’s bullshit though, isn’t it? The popular reproduction/knock-off of the dress is 138 dollars at Macy’s, but how much was the bespoke original? (Never mind whether the “Everyday Woman” can afford a dress at 138 dollars.)

Yes, it was rigged so that the candidate with the most public support, the most support from party office-holders and candidates, and the longest record of effective public service triumphed over the fringe candidate mouthing platitudes and impossible promises, even though the latter was backed by more money and more favorable press. Reince Priebus wishes his party had rigged things so well.

No, take it from those most responsible—the local taxpayers who vote for the officeholders responsible for the selection, training, and discipline of the PD. When the crap gets too expensive, and taxes too high, it will stop.

A must-read Storify thread from Clay Shirky on How Trump Can (and will) Win unless real action is taken.

Thanks for posting this, excellent material. Trump’s candidacy is entirely about the loss of perceived birthright privilege, especially among traditional whites. This is why Trump supporters don’t really care whether Muslim refugees are dangerous; terrorism is a good excuse to keep them out. They don’t really care whether the wall is workable or Mexico pays for it. The proposal itself is proof that Trump will get rid of the Mexicans. and that is what matters.

Pawn of the Oppressor  Jul 22, 2016 • 3:57:51pm

re: #241 Eric The Fruit Bat

A must-read Storify thread from Clay Shirky on How Trump Can (and will) Win unless real action is taken.

I made a very cynical election prediction to my Trumpite co-irker this week:

Record low turnout, Trump wins by 15%.

- Republicans will be 100% mobilized because HITLERY.
- Non-Republicans who hate Hillary will vote because HITLERY.
- The under-30s won’t vote at all, as usual, because it’s just a game show to them and they’ll have lost interest by Election Day.
- A pretty large chunk of Democrats may stay home because they’re lazy and figure, no way can Trump win! So, whatever.

It would be a YUUGE MISTAKE to underestimate Hillary Hate. It’s everywhere, and you can practically taste it. The only remedy - the ONLY remedy - is to get great turnout against Drumpf. People of color will turn out because they have to really consider mobs, boxcars, barbed wire, and pits full of bodies as a future possibility should Trump become king. But, there’s a whole lot of lazy crackers out there who will bitch and marvel at the Dollar Store Mussolini, but stay home and watch another Netflix series episode rather than vote, too.

Hopefully I’m dead wrong and Trump gets flushed into the ashbin of history along with everybody who believes he’s some kind of hero, but the complete opposite looks possible to me too.

Pundits need some way to convince themselves that this is still a horse race and so will spend the next two days insisting that the polls have “tightened” enough to put Trump either even or above Hillary going into the DNC. Willard’s “dead cat bounce” in 2012 was also viewed initially as proof that the RNC had had a positive effect for his chances.

True. Although I thought Biden was a great choice from the get go. I love how hard he campaigned for Candidate Obama and his sense of humor. Seems like a genuinely nice guy. Will miss him along with POTUS.

Wasn’t Newt himself a speaker at the Council of Conservative Citizens, a descendant of the white citizens councils?

I don’t think so - never heard this one myself, and just Googled for it and came up with nothing. Gingrich is too smart to openly associate with groups like that himself.

So close but missed by a Lott (see what I did there?) The answer is Trent Lott who not only spoke there but was also a member. thenation.com

On second thought, Carson is a fool. Milo? He’s a smarmy egotistical serial harasser. And Peter Thiel is a billionaire who has way too much time on his hands supporting the bigot brigade. That wont save him from the GOP scorn and derision that they throw at LGBT on a daily basis.

Honestly, what use have any of them been? Trump’s in the low single digits among black voters, and not much better among other minorities. That leaves him needing a nearly 2-1 majority among white voters. It’s possible, but unless Republicans succeed in turning Ohio and Pennsylvania whites into Alabama and Mississippi whites, it’ll be very hard.

Here’s the thing: A VP pick is one of the first big choices a presidential candidates makes, but it’s also one of the least important ones. It generally only matters in two scenarios: The VP candidate is so outrageously bad that the press drops to the floor laughing or they’re so damned awesome that the press wonders why they’re not the one running at the top of the ticket. Every other VP pick has generally drawn murmurs of “good choice” before things moved on to the party convention.

We’re “overdue” in a sense; we haven’t had to deal with such a situation since 1963. That 53-year period without a President dying in office is now the longest in US history.

Well, a good VP can work to help a president shepherd legislation through Congress, as LBJ did for JFK before the unfortunate events of ‘63. But given the present situation in Congress, I doubt anybody that Hillary selects is going to be very welcome among the House GOP.

Yet Bush 43rd was selected by the Supreme Court and his mandate was never challenged. Our side needs to stop going along with these nonsense arguments.

Obama won 2008 by a margin of 9.5 million votes (electoral college was 365-173), and 2012 by a margin of 5 million votes (electoral college was 332-206)… and Republicans never accepted his mandate.

It won’t matter as there are people who don’t want to know. It’s been 15 years since 9/11 and hundreds of Muslims & Muslim representatives have spoken out against terrorism, yet every single time something happens we hear people whining about how Muslims never speak out or denounce terrorists.

We do: Every. Single. Time. But people ignore it and the media doesn’t find it “sexy” enough to report on breathlessly for hours on end.

Something that many in the GOP don’t know about us black folks is that we don’t give a spit what Carson, West, Keyes, Omarosa, the bible-buster Bennett(?)[ not real sure what his name is, but he’s the guy who gave the invocation and used it to show Trump how much he loves him] think. In general, we just don’t care. We do not permit them to influence our votes. In fact, I’d say that most of us view them as opportunistic suck ups who are dazzled by Trump’s alleged celebrity. I imagine that few, if any, of them have bothered to do any kind of real research on Trump. All they know is he’s a billionaire, a TV reality show guy, and lives in NYC. What they don’t know is that Trump has about as much love for them as he has for others who don’t kiss his butt, and that’s none.
