Better governor than Warner IMO. Warner did a nice job but Kaine was willing to as they get at there things that Warner would have been too cautious to do so. I’ve met Kaine once. Flat out told him that he was the first person I ever voted for.

So we got a GOP nominee who is loved and I mean loved by white supremacists and some people on the left are upset because the Democratic nominee isn’t left wing enough for them. I’m sorry but have some fucking perspective.

Scott Walker names Daniel Kelly to high court

Gov. Scott Walker on Friday named a little-known Waukesha lawyer with no judicial experience to the state Supreme Court, putting Daniel Kelly on the bench and keeping in place the high court’s 5-2 conservative majority.

…In his application, Kelly included a 2014 book chapter in which he wrote same-sex marriage would rob marriage of any meaning and likened affirmative action to slavery.

“Affirmative action and slavery differ, obviously, in significant ways,” Kelly wrote. “But it’s more a question of degree than principle, for they both spring from the same taproot. Neither can exist without the foundational principle that it is acceptable to force someone into an unwanted economic relationship. Morally, and as a matter of law, they are the same.”

It really annoys me how lazy most people are when it comes to researching politicians, not that I’m innocent (I’m not). They look at one or two issues, find that the candidate’s views are too nuanced or not hard-line enough for their liking and then completely dismiss their entire work. Too many people immediately spout off when they should shut up and do some research first.

Star Tribune: Man, 26, charged with shooting at 5 Somali men heading to Ramadan prayers
Anthony Sawina, of Lauderdale, was charged with five counts of second-degree assault and is being held in Hennepin County jail in lieu of $750,000 bail, authorities said.

A Lauderdale man was charged with assault Friday in an apparent hate crime last month in which five Somali men were shot at while they were returning to a mosque for Ramadan prayers.

Anthony Sawina, 26, was charged with five counts of second-degree assault in connection with the case. He remains in the Hennepin County jail in lieu of $750,000 bail.

His initial court appearance was set for Monday afternoon.

Just before 2:30 a.m. on June 29, the five Somali men were walking back to their car after playing basketball when they encountered Sawina and a group emerging from a Dinkytown bar, police said. One of the people in Sawina’s group asked one of the victims: “What’s that dress you’re wearing?” according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.

Authorities say that when the five men, who were all wearing qamis, a traditional Muslim prayer robe, ignored the remark and got into a car to leave, another man in Sawina’s group made a derogatory comment about Muslims.

Nothing wrong with not knowing too much about him. To your credit, you’ve looked into him. I think people are really going to like Tim as they get to know him. There’s a reason why Virginia has gone from a state that didn’t even go Democratic for Carter has become competitive and Kaine’s a big part of that and he’s got a nice record too.

Oh go fuck yourself Mike. Kaine has actually accomplished a lot in his political career. If you had your way, Clinton would have chosen someone who may have a great voting record but doesn’t know how to get legislation passed or to run difficult campaigns. Man, I’m sorry but I’m tired of this part of the left’s bullshit. Moore doesn’t know shit about Tim Kaine. He just knows he’s a Democrat with a moderate reputation from a swing state and he thinks that means that Kaine has no spine.

There certainly is a lot of smugness about them. Their perverse view that they are the only ones in the Democratic Party for example. I mean I’m well to Clinton’s left but I feel she’s more tolerant of other opinions than Bernie was. These types want an echo chamber. They don’t want healthy discussion of the issues. If we had done things their way on health care, we’d still be fighting for it. ACA isn’t perfect but thanks to it, I can no longer be denied coverage due to my heart condition and quite a few more million Americans now do have insurance. That to me is more important than seeing who has the most progressive dick.

re: #40 electrotek

I can’t speak for others, but I do not associate with those who have bad reputations. The persons you’re referring to know Trump is toxic in so many ways. They’ve seen it for themselves, but they’re willing to overlook the ugliness because they agree with the things he says/does. Agreeing with the things he says/does means they approve of them. There’s no way they can avoid it, Electrotek. Their denial reminds me of the old adage that if you lie down with dogs, you’ll get fleas. If one doesn’t want a certain stench on him/herself, s/he should dissociate him/herself from the individual/persons. If Trump is on TV and says that he wants to export all Xs and they laugh, clap, or say nothing against it, they approve of it. They’re not only lying to themselves, they’re lying to you when they tell you that although they’re not like Trump, they’re going to vote for him in November anyway. You don’t have a problem, they do.

I know a lot of blacks because I’m one, and not one of them has said s/he doesn’t plan to vote in November. Wherever I go in Middle GA and run into other blacks, the subject of Trump comes up and a look of revulsion appears on their faces. No way will these people “sit out” the November election because they do not want Trump anywhere near the WH. Furthermore, I think a recent poll showed that Trump has zero percent support among Black Americans in some important states. Also, he can trot out whichever *ss-kissing black person he wants and parade them around 24/7, but I don’t think they will be able to significantly increase his support among Black Americans. Too much has been said and done by Trump and other GOP politicians and their supporters through the years, and we will always remember these things.

You know, I have to admit this: some of my old HS friends are Trump supporters.

I’m not really approving of it, but it’s hard.

Hard because these are people I went to school with and had great memories of those times.

I know they have good hearts but their support for Trump is really tearing apart their moral compass. I struggle with that. It’s hard to reconcile your great memories with them from yesteryear with their support for a vile and divisive candidate.

I know many would end up deleting them off their Facebook page, as far as social media is concerned. However, I can’t get myself to do that. I believe in dialogue with even your fiercest opponent so I let them stay on and debate their points. Does it get heated sometimes? You bet’cha, but in the end you gain your cool and realize that it was all for nothing. But, was it all for nothing? You could have kept it in your chest and let it accumulate to where it would unleash at the worst possible time, and the consequences would be worse than. So to some, maybe it wasn’t for nothing.

So how do you reconcile your beliefs with those diametrically opposed to yours in light of the most divisive election of our times, in an age of social media?

I really don’t know what Duke’s game is in all this I guess. Is he 100% behind trying to help Trump win or (more likely in my opinion) is he just using Trump’s candidacy to further his own racist shitlord agenda? If it’s the latter then continuing to cling along like a remora hoping to feed on scraps makes sense. There’s a difference here, because one of those crackheads has been executed and is generally reviled, while the other one is praised in that city as an effective manager, so showing that he strangled the grandma (and other 100 or so grandmas) is important from the point of view of educating the public.

126
No Depression  Jul 23, 2016 • 12:07:19am

I think people are focusing way too much on the VP pick’s effect on 3 months of campaigning when the VP is being selected to serve in a role that lasts 4-8 years. The VP’s ability to generate enthusiasm is important, but isn’t nearly as important as how well they work with the President and how well they can step in and govern when needed.

I understand that aspect and why it was so important, especially during the Cold War.

And history has forgotten that the USSR also invaded Poland…they just snuck in the back door after the Nazi crackheads had kicked in the front door.

I kinda doubt that many of them would want to go through the shame and conflict of the debates and votes in the House, followed by the very public trial in the Senate, to remove a Republican. That’s not likely to go well for them electorally in the future.

Reuters/Ipsos had her ahead by 12 at a time when the average was ahead by 3. Several things could be going on.

One could be that the +12 was a wild outlier, the kind of thing that happens, and the +3 is getting back where everyone else is.

Another could be that the bias is baked into their poll, and Trump is actually 6 points ahead. That one seems unlikely, since it would literally be a swing of 9 points.

While I’m not saying Trump can’t - or won’t - win, I still think it’s more likely he’ll end up torpedoing his candidacy as a result of his team’s incompetence. For instance, as goddamnedfrank posted earlier, Trump is now apparently the subject of an FEC investigation.

I’ve seen Kaine on the Sunday morning talk shows a couple of times. I recall him as coming off as pretty level headed and someone that makes sense.

Maybe Moore is correct in that he isn’t going to excite the base but who really cares. Trumps insanity is hopefully doing the job of making the base and more realize it’s important to come out and vote against his brand of crazy.

I like that Hillary picked a smart person with a level head to be the person a heartbeat away. Someone that actually shares her sort of values. Shows deep thought/wisdom rather than picking some kind of side show freak that appeals to the same to get a minor bump.

I have little doubt Kaine will make Pence look the idiot he is in a debate.

I haven’t given up all hope that people in America will vote the sane option.

There is no making sense out of things that don’t make sense. We can only guess at how DT has made it this far. Perhaps a bit from column A a bit from B etc.

I’m thinking the one thing that might stop him is that if he even keeps 3-4% of the GOP away from voting at least from voting for him that might be enough to give Hillary the edge she will need.

re: #179 Nyet

Speaking of catastrophes - or at least, potential catastrophes - this happened in Argentina:

Residents of a city in southern Argentina got a scare when a series of powerful explosions shook homes and buildings Wednesday, but the cause turned out to be a natural wonder: a meteor disintegrating overhead.

It was an ordinary Wednesday afternoon in General Roca, a city of 85,000 people, when suddenly a series of loud blasts caused buildings to shake and windows to rattle.

Finally, scientists pieced together the reason: A meteor had entered the Earth’s atmosphere some 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) overhead, traveling at 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles) per hour.

“It took everyone by surprise because it entered the atmosphere over an inhabited area. If it had fallen over the desert, the sea, Antarctica, we would never have known,” said astronomer Roberto Figueroa, head of the nearby Neuquen observatory.

He estimated the meteor measured about 12 meters in diameter before breaking into three fragments.

Reminiscent of the Chelyabinsk meteor.

still, polls are just polls and it’s a long way to till the election

trump could be undercounted because many people might be ashamed to admit they want to vote for him. on the other hand, it’s equally plausible that hillary is undercounted in many parts of the country where people would be ashamed to admit they are voting for her

Trump could also be undercounted because his voters aren’t considered “likely voters”. And I’m not convinced they’ve sorted out the problem of polling people who only use a cellphone.

yah i saw that actually i compulsively check all polling sites. check out his electoral college prediction at the top of that page. and nate’s electoral college prediction
is the most pessimistic one for democrats

basically trump needs to take ohio, florida, and pennsylvania to win

He has more than one route. If he wins all the Romney states, including NC, he gets exactly 270 if he adds Nevada, Iowa, Ohio, Florida, NH and Maine’s 2d congressional district. Pa and Va could individually substitute for some of those states or Florida, but Va just got harder for Trump to win with Kaine on the ticket. Another important point is that if Trump gets to 269, the election goes to the House of Representatives, controlled by the GOP.

In reference to Michael Moore’s butthurt, and the hardcore Berniac NeverHillary people, I am not sure they are the base or someone that the Democrats should be appealing to. As Nyet said, they are voting for Stein or Trump.
Pew does a Political Typology survey every few years. This is the latest one I found from 2014. You could spend a lot of time poring through it as it is rich in data.

Solid Liberals, who constitute 15% of the public and 17% of registered voters, are the anchor of the Democratic Party’s electoral coalition - the most avid and loyal voters, holding liberal views across nearly all issues.

But the party must rely on support from the other Democratically-oriented groups in the typology - the Faith and Family Left and Next Generation Left - to be successful. While each of these groups leans Democratic by wide margins, they diverge from across-the-board liberal thinking in a number of critical ways that have implications for their loyalty and turnout.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I get that some folks are upset that Hillary picked Kaine over say Booker or any number of other qualified picks.

Kaine gives Hillary an advantage in a key swing state of Virginia. He helps with Hispanics and has a strong record of fighting housing discrimination, which is something Trump repeatedly did at his housing complexes in NYC. Know who Trump discriminated against? Blacks. Know who Kaine helped while as a housing discrimination lawyer? Blacks.

I was surprised to see Hillary dip into the Senate for her VP pick, given how close things are there, but at the end of the day, the pick had to come from somewhere and Kaine is the best option for her given her vulnerabilities such as they are.

Democrats need to remember that winning the WH is just part of the big picture here. They have to retake the Senate at a minimum and close the gap in the House in order to minimize the obstructionism the GOP intends (and we all know what their intent is).

The RNC shows where the GOP truly believes its future is - with white supremacists, bigots, and extremists. The DNC will show its inclusiveness and it must cultivate its bench for future elections. That includes future presidential picks and leaders of the party going forward.

The RNC that just mercifully ended did none of that. It was nothing but a Trump show, and ignored that the conventions are typically where delegates get exposed to rising stars and new leaders emerge. That’s what we should expect with the DNC. And based on the slate of speakers, that’s what we’ll get.

It’s also telling that the only thing that the Trump campaign could say about Kaine is that he’s corrupt, based on fact that he’s never been indicted and doesn’t have the ethical lapses and mass lawsuits filed against him the way Trump does. Rather, Kaine’s issues arise in Virginia, which has among the most lax laws on campaign donations in the nation. If that’s your only real hot-take at the selection, you’re in trouble because it also shows a lack of oppo-research (compare to how Hillary body slammed Pence from the outset on multiple fronts).

I hadn’t looked at the link, so didn’t know it was stuffed with rib meat…that sounds just about perfect.
The “Franken” in the original had me thinking it was stuffed with hot dogs. Thus, the sausage recommendation.
I did also think stuffing it with a pork tenderloin seemed tasty

The franken-webers are grills modified to try to reach 700-900 degree pizza temps. The best ones are home-made of refractory material, but wife got me a stainless version. Had the stone up to 550 so far.

I didn’t know anything, but looking into it, it seems that he checks nearly every box that might be an advantage to Pence: Christian? check; Pro-life? check (but with caveat that he won’t try to change law); he’s fought housing discrimination, gave a 14-minute speech in Spanish in Congress on immigration reform; and when asked if being called “boring” was a criticism he said, “hey, ‘boring’ is the fastest-growing demographic in America.”

In that respect, Tim Kaine is no different from my father who is pushing 70 and has been a Democratic voter his entire life. He doesn’t agree with abortion, but believes its a personal decision and doesn’t want the politicians making decisions for women.

I think Kaine’s a good pick…stable, honest, ethical…nice counter to Trump’s Pence pick…without the ultra-conservative freak shit.

I don’t think he should be used as an attack dog though. First, Hillary’s far better at it and seems to enjoy it as much as Trump does, and second, he was picked to bring an air of stability to the ticket. Elections aren’t about the VP pick anyway, Far better for people to look at him and just say, “Oh, that’s a nice back up.”

I thought about that as well. This could be the first presidential race where the main candidates attack each other while the VP picks debate policy. And it’s not that Hillary can’t debate policy, it’s just that you can’t debate policy with Donald Trump…not seriously.

No. “Handle” means making sure protests stay peaceful if at all possible, and dispersing them with as little damage to persons and property as is practical if they turn violent.

Good policing also means figuring out (in advance in many cases) who the likely ‘riot tourists’ are and making sure they don’t cause trouble or are swiftly contained if they do.

Violence and riots are not things I want at the DNC, Sergey.

Whatever his reasons, this was one seriously messed up young man. It’s kind of sad that someone so young (also like the Afghani 17-year-old last week) could be so messed up psychologically. Extremists like Da’esh, Breivik, etc. seem to draw the mentally unstable like shit draws flies. And groups like Da’esh will happily use anyone.

Youth can be so impulsive also. A small thing/situation can look catastrophic to a mind that has limited experience to draw on. And add in someone to encourage them on it can turn tragic.

That’s what the probationary concept is for. Labor relations in this country are fundamentally an adversarial model, and it’s asking a lot for a union to cut its members off at the knee. If both unions and management are competent in their roles, the system (usually) works.

I’m about 10’ away from the basement door and I’ve got ‘CCO on the radio. They’re the go-to station for severe weather. They have a cooking show on right now so this may not be as bad as it looks on WeatherUnderground. Wind is kicking up but not severe.

Hoping this is the Ben Carson speech of severe storms.

I’ll play devil’s advocate here but with the shit the Sanders campaign constantly said about the DNC and Dem establishment, they really have no right to be upset that there wasn’t some blowback their way. I see some of the Sanders diehards I know crying about how the DNC views them but they admit that they view the DNC with contempt so is it any wonder that the feeling is well mutual. I’m no fan of DWS but Clinton beat Sanders because Bernie really had no idea how to run a truly national campaign. Bernie’s campaign failures lay squarely with Bernie, Weaver, and DeVine.

Could be, I don’t know he history of the name change. I read about it years ago, but I don’t remember for sure. What I do know is the guys raised during the Shah’s time were the most bigoted against Arabs. The Shah really pushed the Aryan thing and Aryan in Farsi—Aariaee—sounds very similar to Iran.

“Aryan” is what the Indo-European-speaking invaders of India called themselves in Sanskrit—the “bright” or “shining” ones. The Persian Great Kings used “Aryan” as a complimentary epithet for themselves. “Iran” is the same word—as is “Eireann” or “Erin” for Ireland. Goes way back in the Indo-European family,

He came pretty close for having a campaign that sucked. He was at 3% last summer and nobody took him seriously until late February.

That said, Hillary could have beat him without the DWS/DNC alliance…all this does is make the historical first female candidate’s nomination look like it may have been achieved less than honorably. Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, as we have learned in US politics, it’s all about appearance. At the end of the day it’ll be an asterisk, like the one people see in their minds when they look at Barry Bonds home run record…oh, he doped…so the fuck what? He hit the ball well. I think there may be some. Thing is I think it’s more bitterness over who chose him. If Bernie had won and chose him, they’d use it as an argument that Bernie despite being far left is open to other mindsets within the party. The thing I see with many internet progressives- I’m not talking about Lizardom here but most of them I think live in an ideological bubble which is why they had such a hard time accepting that Clinton beat Sanders and don’t even bother getting them to understand why some people may not think Bernie is the best thing since sliced bread. They just see voting records and think that’s how you nominate the best candidates. They totally ignore that Clinton has a great team behind her while Bernie’s was limited.

Bernie did a nice job. I just can’t help but to think though that so many of his supporters and I include one of my own brothers in this don’t understand what this position he ran for actually entails. I think they wanted someone that would radically change the Democratic Party’s ideology. Bernie’s slogan was “Not Me but Us” but ironically I saw lot of meism and that was exampified by the Bernie or Busters. I hate to say it but those who want a more lefty Democratic party really need to look at what happened with the Religious Right and the GOP. They didn’t just start off with their choice of President. They literally built the Republican party from a respectable center right party to the shithole it is today and they did it by running candidates from the ground up. So if you want a progressive Democratic party, run candidates for local offices. If I learned anything dealing with politics in college, it was how vital local politics is. Tip O’Neill was right about that. It’s too bad that many on the left don’t get that.

BTW, in case no one noticed, Da’esh killed 80 more people today and wounded 230+ in Kabul:

Islamic State claims responsibility for Kabul attack, 80 dead

Twin explosions tore through a demonstration by members of Afghanistan’s mainly Shi’ite Hazara minority in Kabul on Saturday, killing at least 80 people and wounding more than 230 in a suicide attack claimed by Islamic State.

Graphic television footage from the site of the attack showed many dead bodies lying on the bloodied road, close to where thousands of Hazara had been demonstrating over the route of a planned multimillion dollar power line.

“Two fighters from Islamic State detonated explosive belts at a gathering of Shi’ites in the city of Kabul in Afghanistan,” said a brief statement on the group’s Amaq news agency.

If confirmed as the work of Islamic State, the attack would represent a major escalation for a group which has hitherto been largely confined to the eastern province of Nangarhar.

The explicit reference to the Hazara’s Shi’ite religious affiliation also represents a menacing departure for Afghanistan, where the bloody sectarian rivalry between Sunni and Shi’ites typical of Iraq has been relatively rare, despite decades of war. […]

He’s believes that’s why so much of our architecture is Roman. It’s why empires claiming Rome’s legitimacy name their rulers Kaiser or Czar.

He says it’s why we are so aggressive in our desire to ‘fix’ other cultures, to ‘ennoble’ them, to ‘civilize’ them. We won’t be satisfied until every one acknowledges our greatness, recognizes us as Rome reborn.

“Islamist slimebags”? That’s a step up from “Radical Islamists” which is your party’s favorite term…you’ve generalized your disdain further than Trump even.

The LNA soldiers fighting the alliance of jihadist groups in Benghazi are themselves Muslims. “Islamist’ is a term I use to refer to various groups within the Muslim world who seek to impose theocracy of varying degrees of severity.

Basically, if a Muslim is not a theocrat then I do not consider them an Islamist or refer to them as such.

Ahh the old “both” do it so I can’t support it.

But yet you supported Bush didn’t you? You going to tell me there wasn’t some serial lying going on there.

I know you haven’t been around but have you seen the posted comparison chart in truth versus lying? Guess who is at the top? ALL of the Republicans led by your party’s big orange glob candidate. Some of them guys you would have supported had not Trump sat on all of them.

At the bottom and credited with very little truth stretching..Hillary Clinton. Even below St. Bernard of Vermont.

So, going with your thinking I’m gonna say you are lying! /

Barbarians at the gates? Hardly. We threw the gates wide open and let the barbarians in. And this is the thanks we get.

We didn’t let them in. They’re who we are, if we let ourselves be. The fear and hate of The Other comes natural to us, it takes effort to be something else and to make society into something better. They’re afraid of that work, and afraid of what it would mean if BLM (for example) is right that our society DOESN’T value all lives equally.

I’m reminded of Jules’ speech to “Ringo” in Pulp Fiction:

See now I’m thinkin’, maybe it means you’re the evil man. And I’m the righteous man. And Mr. 9 Milimeter here, he’s the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could mean you’re the righteous man and I’m the shepherd and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. Now I’d like that. But that shit ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be a shepherd.

It’s comforting to think of oneself as Preserving Western Civilization Against The Barbarian Hordes. But really, we need to recognize that Western Civilization has been as bad as the Barbarian Hordes. We are ‘the tyranny of evil men’, and we need to try REAL HARD to be the shepherd.

re: #491 Romantic Heretic

The fact of the matter is, until Renaissance, we were the barbarians to the more advanced Muslim World. The West would not truly pull ahead until the enlightenment, and our supposed civilized nature is a little bit of a veneer.

The same year Star Wars came out, France had it’s last execution by Guillotine. PM Major and President Mitterand declined to help Bosnia for quite some time because they saw the wiping out of Muslims in Bosnia as correcting a aberration, namely that there were Muslim nations in Europe. No, seriously.

Clinton said U.S. allies in Europe blocked proposals to adjust or remove the embargo. They justified their opposition on plausible humanitarian grounds, arguing that more arms would only fuel the bloodshed, but privately, said the president, key allies objected that an independent Bosnia would be “unnatural” as the only Muslim nation in Europe. He said they favored the embargo precisely because it locked in Bosnia’s disadvantage. [..] When I expressed shock at such cynicism, reminiscent of the blind-eye diplomacy regarding the plight of Europe’s Jews during World War II, President Clinton only shrugged. He said President François Mitterrand of France had been especially blunt in saying that Bosnia did not belong, and that British officials also spoke of a painful but realistic restoration of Christian Europe. Against Britain and France, he said, German chancellor Helmut Kohl among others had supported moves to reconsider the United Nations arms embargo, failing in part because Germany did not hold a seat on the U.N. Security Council.

To their credit, Kohl of Germany objected to this and allowed the US, Pakistan, and Turkey to use German Bases for frankly illegal activities to support the Bosnians, and Margaret Thatcher thought want Major and Mitterand did was sick.

And not to mention that, until 1945, Europe was the most war-prone violent continent of them all.

Yeah, it’s hard to imagine what sort of twisted self-hate would make an immigrant identify with a white terrorist and kill other immigrants. I didn’t figure it was Da’esh inspired as they hate Shia, so an Iranian would be unlikely to be a fan.

That’s some serious bad crazy nonetheless. Sheesh—I wasn’t expecting that.

There are a pair of Iranian brothers in my family’s village in rural west-central Germany who I’ve met, who are indistinguishable from your “average” (read: white) German, except for skin color and name. Their parents arrived in Germany in the 80’s and these two are what you’d call “fully integrated”.

If they ever attended mosques, dressed differently, or did other immigrant-y things, I never saw it, because they swilled beer, shot pool, uttered cynicism, and played Counterstrike at the village youth club like the rest of us.

So, the media might make a lot of hay out of the shooter being Iranian background, but that could mean absolutely nothing. The fact that he got into an argument with a bystander, and that the contents of that argument are so typically German, lean me towards “not a factor”.

The DNC rigged what they could! So what. She won. Get over it. I’m not losing any sleep over this. It’s all par for the course.

Has it been proven they “rigged” anything. I admit I am behind on the latest outrage, but I thought I read that Bernies faith or lack thereof was looked into but never used against him.

Funny though how a bad headline in a NY newspaper Bernie made into “she is unqualified to be president” is picked up by the Round Mound of Orange and used again and again as “Even Bernie Sanders said she is unqualified” is now in the past to the Bernieites as campaign tactics.

I sure as hell wish Democrats could eliminate one gun at least. That would be the one the infighting in the party uses to shoot the party and its candidates in the foot. The one being used by the Ben Jealous, Micael Moore and Jeff Weavers of the world.

I want to see real change. I want to see a Democratic party that is so tight it will drive right over Trump effortlessly. Put down that gun.

Agh. I wish he hadn’t said that but you know the situation in the Balkans was very ugly. The Yugoslav Civil War is actually the first event I really remember. And that was rather over-the-line, and wrong, too. Very few Serbs were illiterate, rural literacy programs having been a priority for Tito. Illiterate degenerates would not have built the M-84A, the most sophisticated version of the T-72 in terms of gunnery at the time.

Hillary’s against the TPP.
Kaine is for the TPP.
Trump is against the TPP.
Pence is for the TPP.

Does anyone have the right dance partner in this race?

//sarcasm - I know, she’s not really against the TPP…it was just that damn Sanders got so many people riled up it was best to show concern about it.

She is against aspects of the trade bill and has freely stated it. As many other politicians. Most likely if certain things were changed even St. Bernard would be okay with it. Unless Bernie is a strict isolationist I think he is for trade as it is a great way to keep nations partnered and less prone to wars, etc.

So no, she is not totally against TPP, she would like to see it modified.

Does that work for you? Or, are you always going to be sour even if it means you are stretching things.

A couple of sticking points are that it could allow corporations to sue countries if their regulations “cheat” them out of profits and that it could force people who have grievances with corporations to get them addressed through arbitration instead of lawsuits, which heavily favors corporations. I was undecided on TPP until I heard about these clauses. I oppose it now.

Seems to be in language about copyrights, trade secrets and the like and that an international group will be responsible for the fairness and policing of such. Many want America solely responsible for all aspects of our business and that is what Trump is pounding on.

Also, much of it is just pure scare tactics saying all trade pacts are the evil. So TPP is evil too.

What I’ve found odd is that even people who like Obama don’t seem to feel he has their back on a new trade agreement he claims rights many of the wrongs of the trade agreements of the past.

They sure as hell are not going to look at it like you (a Canadian) would as a benefiting and partner in NAFTA, just like Mexico.

I don’y get it. Work with it, change it, negotiate. Be a politician and not just a poo-flinging critic.

This is something that I think may get overlooked but is important :I know it’s easy to Kaine as a “boring white guy”.
According to John Moeser, a professor emeritus of urban studies and planning at Virginia Commonwealth University and later a visiting fellow at the University of Richmond’s Center for Civic Engagement, during his time as mayor Kaine “was energetic, charismatic and, most important, spoke openly about his commitment to racial reconciliation in Richmond.”[18] In the early part of his term, Kaine issued an apology for the city’s role in slavery,[21][24] the apology was generally well received as “a genuine, heartfelt expression.”[21] In the latter part of his term, a contentious debate took place in the city over the inclusion of a portrait of Confederate general Robert E. Lee in a set of historic murals to be placed on city floodwalls; Kaine came out in favor of Lee’s inclusion, arguing that placing Lee on the floodwall made sense in context.[25]

One became an atheist and got into social work and the third got involved in city government but not as a politician so much as a coordinator with social services and government agencies.

In other words, doing good works for people without the collar. Must be something in the holy water!

He is. Devout Catholic but also and I didn’t know this (I turned 21 his last year as governor) but he’s why we can buy alcohol in this state on Sundays now. He’s very much cut from the Catholicism of Biden, he believes in his church’s teachings but he also realizes that secular and religious law are different and separate matters.

I decided earlier today to check out the old Fark thread on the day Biden was announced, see if I could get an idea where sentiment was about the pick. And almost everything I read sounded familiar: He was too “boring” and yet too risky was “gaffe-prone,” he was “establishment” when Obama needed somebody to shake up and energize the progressive vote, Obama was “playing it safe” when he could have gone for a firebreathing progressive, etc, etc. Virtually everything said about Kaine yesterday was said about Biden 8 years ago.

So yeah, I’m not sweating Hillary’s choice. I even totally agree with those who say that this decision shows she’s confident about beating Trump in November. Not complacent, but confident.

Scott Walker names Daniel Kelly to high court

Before starting his own firm, Kelly was a lawyer for 15 years with Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren. He received his bachelor’s degree in political science and Spanish from Carroll University and his law degree from Regent University in Virginia, the college founded by televangelist Pat Robertson that bills itself as a “global center for Christian thought and action.”

Right. A lot of people love Biden now but at the time, he was establishment and too safe. Worked out well in the end and I feel Kaine will for Clinton.

Oh, and another thing I read at Fark that was repeated by PUMAs and wingnuts alike: The Biden pick had doomed Obama. McCain was gonna pick Palin and eat his lunch, while progressives would sit home because Biden wasn’t exciting enough. There was no way Obama could win with somebody like Biden on the ticket. The PUMAs were even bitching in Aug ‘08 that Obama should have picked Hillary because (wait for it) she polled better against McCain!

That even extended into a dig on the family, but not in a dirty way. I was very happy to see him get into that. Make a deal of the fake republican opportunists they all are.

And with that…time to get to work. Another logo design in progress.

I’m getting some small business start ups work which is my main target. I’m hoping I can grow some work out of it all as they too grow.

Oh noes, he spoke the Spanish. I mean it’s not like in some parts of this country Spanish was spoken for generations before English was. I am old enough to remember when Republicans lauded Bush for his Spanish and I have to admit, I mocked him but I was young and dumb and realize now that Bush at least cared to show respect to Spanish speaking Americans which is something unheard of in today’s GOP.

For weeks as Trump has been ascendant, the GOP wouldn’t touch Duke except to mumble that he didn’t matter.

But as soon as he announces for office, they suddenly find their balls in that jar in the fridge behind the mayo.

It’s because he threatens their brand, the illusion that they’re not really racist wink wink.

I’m not paying close attention, but does Trump know David Duke now? He seems to float in and out of Trump’s memory, almost like it lines up with whether he needs to or not.

Okay…leaving

Also was what if Obama had a daughter that became pregnant on the eve of the convention and was unmarried like Bristol was. Obama to his credit eight years ago showed a lot of empathy to Bristol noting that his mother too was a teen mom. I think that’s part of why I loathe the Palins so much. They are so down right nasty to Obama and Obama actually was pretty empathetic to them when that happened in a way that Obama’s children never would have gotten from McCain and the GOP talking heads had they been in that situation.
