Watch Live: 2016 Democratic Convention, Featuring Al Franken
As Al Franken takes the stage, here’s our second thread for the Democratic Convention’s first day. Al just introduced himself as a “world-renowned expert on right wing megalomaniacs.”

I will also be excited for a Madame President. Ironically excited for the news media falling over themselves trying to figure out all the new words, phrases, and styles.
Franken invokes Paul Wellstone and the crowd cheers.
Al Franken is slurring but still killing it even if he is drunk.

He’s been fantastic. Who would have guessed it when he first ran? I honestly thought he was a joke at first.
re: #2 Backwoods_Sleuth
I remember how pissed he was at the treatment of Wellstone.
I read his book “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them.” I think he had it out for Norm Coleman in 2008.

I think most everyone did except Al himself. He’s been great. In fact, I thought Clinton should consider him as a running mate.He does a lot of great things with the USO too.
Senator Franken was a comedian and still knows how to make an audience laugh.
This is a really funny speech. Good on Al.
re: #6 Ziggy_TARDIS
That’s probably why he went forward with the massive recount saga. He really, really wanted to bury Coleman. Thankfully, he did.

I still have the book. I have not read it in years but the impression I got after reading that and having previously read Michael Moore’s stupid White Men that I liked Al better. Plus Al wasn’t afraid to say nice things on a personal level about some Republicans though he wasn’t afraid to call them a “big fat idiot” too(I got a used copy of Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot when I was 13 because the title seemed funny to me.
Thank you Seator Franken. You’re good enough. You’re smart enough, and gosh darnit. We like you!
Dancing is much better there than the RNC. :P

Only thing it was missing was a riff on “Deep Thoughts”.

Just like the dancing is better on my niece’s mother’s side than my and my brother’s side :).

Trust me. It’s better coming from him than me. ;)
re: #16 Ziggy_TARDIS
Yeah, I liked Al Franken from that book.
Yeah the title alone just grabbed my teenaged eye heh. I still have it somewhere too. I had no idea who Limbaugh was. What I like about Al is though he uses data to demonstrate his point and he doesn’t really demonize either. I believe Al’s father was a Republican and we know about what he does at the USO with an audience that is definitely not as liberal as he.
Al Franken was great as usual. I like him. Funny stuff that diffused the tension in the crowd and made people laugh.

I can’t imagine the RNC having anything like that. A big difference between the two parties goes beyond ideology. It really is how they treat people.

Republicans weren’t running for America. They were running against blacks, Latinos, gays, and Hillary Clinton.

I thought that was new. I bet that verification has the stalkers and the “LGF is irrelevant!” crowd even more unhinged than usual, especially in wake of their heroes (CCJ, Milo, RSM) getting permabanned.

A great point too. You know I mentioned it earlier but Kaine did something that caught my eye in his introduction speech, he brought up naturalization ceremonies and asked if there were any naturalized citizens in the audience. Really hit home for me since my niece’s mother’s family are that.
I’m a little afraid I’m going to cause Twitter’s database to blow up with all the raving loons I’ve been blocking today.

In a way, it shouldn’t be too surprising that Al Franken is a successful politician. Comedians tend to be more intelligent than people give them credit for. You have to be to have a working portfolio of references to draw from, to make connections between concepts most people wouldn’t think of and to work a crowd.
re: #29 StephenMeansMe

Has anyone check Trump for tweets during her speech?
This is a night and day comparison to the RNC. At the RNC, it was doom and gloom everywhere. Here? There’s an upbeat nature to things, even with the hacking scandal looming.
Why? For one thing, the economy is actually pretty good, and it’s a whole lot better than four years ago (and a whole lot better than Romney was willing to offer).
That’s due in part to the President of the US, who is a Democrat and supports Clinton’s nomination.

No sensible adult demands moral purity from a political party, but conscience is meaningless without constraints.
Both ends involved in this one. Not both sides, but the ends of the wings. The only difference between these two is that the voting majority of the Republican party is on the right wing.

What a wonderfully eloquent message, and condemnation of the stygian depths to which the GOP has sunk. If there is another life, my “Uncle Sam” Rayburn and I will take Mr. Ladd fishing when he arrives.

Sarah doing very good so far.
The acoustics in the hall are craptastic, unfortunately - I can’t even make out whether people are cheering, booing, or somewhere in between!
The Berners are shouting down Al Franken now.

Sadly, this may be Democratic wishful thinking. Conservatives don’t really think that it’s wrong to favor white guys over others. The best you can hope for is that the business-oriented people to determine that it’s inefficient. Even then, once white supremacy becomes the status quo, it’s the path of least resistance to retain it.

re: #83 William of Orange
That is the best picture ever.
I think we now know why Art Garfunkel sang this on the record.
That was a rough lead in to Paul by Al and Sarah, but Sarah got the point across. There’s bigger fish to fry. Defeating Trump is the most important thing that the Democrats must do.
I wish they’d go further than this. It’s not just defeating Trump. It’s rolling back the GOP at all levels, and it means an extraordinary and sustained GOTV in every election.
You can’t just win the WH and think it’ll be okay. That’s the strategy that led to losses in 2010 and 2012 and 2014 in Congress and statehouses. You don’t get to move an agenda if you can’t get the votes, and the Democrats lost in those places due to complacency and a failure to stand up for the President’s agenda with Obamacare. Instead of running away, they needed to fight.
The GOP obstructionism is a direct result from thinking that the Democrats will not draw the line. It’s a position of a bully and it has to be stopped.
Hillary’s in the best position to do that because she understands value of coordinating and coalition building to get things done.
re: #75 Eric The Fruit Bat
I don’t know if this song is really going to do the trick, quite frankly.
They’re not going to win the hardcore Bernie people over. The Bernie people are just going to have to grow up. It will probably take Clinton winning without them to do it, but that’s OK.
While we watch the polls, we should also remember that it’s been estimate that Obama lost about 2-3% of the vote because he was black. She will win this, especially since she seems to be concentrating on the most important things: GOTV and down ticket races.
Too bad Mario’s son is such a sleazeball.

Lest we forget but Trump’s GOTV is awful.
Mario’s speech in 1984 is still the greatest speech I’d ever heard. Sadly, he could have given the entirety of that speech today and the same issues drive us today - jobs, lack of opportunity, and the need to provide the safety net and care for those who are less fortunate for ourselves.

You are describing the political reality of US conservatism (i.e., that it is inherently racist).
The Vox article is interesting because its thesis (from a conservative) is that conservatism needs to become something that is not inherently racist if it is to remain viable.

Right and I was agreeing with Roy’s thesis that conservatism has slipped in large part because conservatives attempt to deny their past when it comes to racial issues. Instead, they want to point to the Dixiecrats and ignore that the GOP/right courted those voters. Unlike, Roy, I don’t feel sad about ti at all though. That might be true if the US looked like England now, or the US of 1980. But it doesn’t any more. Whites alone cannot overcome the how much minorities are skewed towards Democrats because a very large chunk of us Democrats will never vote for the racists.

Well, spending most of my life in states where conservatism has been both historically racist and politically extremely successful does make me skeptical of claims that explicitly racist rhetoric will doom a party. You’d better have some argument other than “you’re racist,” because the answer will be some version of “So what?”

The states that have usually determined Presidential elections, like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, have electorates significantly whiter than the national average and changing very slowly. Counting on demographics won’t save Democrats if their percentage share of the white vote falls under the mid-40s in those states.

There’s one party counting on demographics, and it isn’t the Democrats. Democrats are ahead of the curve on representing all races (by about 20 years I believe), but they’re not excluding whites. To flip yours, Republicans keep counting on whites voting > 60% for Republicans, which is happening in non-presidential years, for sure, but not during the presidency any more.

That’s such a different look from Clinton eight years ago and Bernie arguably got more than Clinton did in the convention even though he lost by much more.
This convention is exponentially better and more professional than that shit show that was on last week.
This is how you kill a movement, Bros, showing massive disrespect after all the ways the party bent over backwards to appeal to you. I just found myself wondering what sort of convention we’d be watching if Bernie was the nominee. And given the campaign he ran, I worry that it would have been the far-left mirror of the RNC, with the only difference being who are the villains and who the messiah is.
Just thinking about the Republicans’ first-night “barn burner” speaker -Rudy Giuliani - and the difference between him and Cory Booker’s approach.
