He’s been fantastic. Who would have guessed it when he first ran? I honestly thought he was a joke at first.

I remember how pissed he was at the treatment of Wellstone.

I read his book “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them.” I think he had it out for Norm Coleman in 2008.

I still have the book. I have not read it in years but the impression I got after reading that and having previously read Michael Moore’s stupid White Men that I liked Al better. Plus Al wasn’t afraid to say nice things on a personal level about some Republicans though he wasn’t afraid to call them a “big fat idiot” too(I got a used copy of Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot when I was 13 because the title seemed funny to me.

Yeah the title alone just grabbed my teenaged eye heh. I still have it somewhere too. I had no idea who Limbaugh was. What I like about Al is though he uses data to demonstrate his point and he doesn’t really demonize either. I believe Al’s father was a Republican and we know about what he does at the USO with an audience that is definitely not as liberal as he.

In a way, it shouldn’t be too surprising that Al Franken is a successful politician. Comedians tend to be more intelligent than people give them credit for. You have to be to have a working portfolio of references to draw from, to make connections between concepts most people wouldn’t think of and to work a crowd.

This is a night and day comparison to the RNC. At the RNC, it was doom and gloom everywhere. Here? There’s an upbeat nature to things, even with the hacking scandal looming.

Why? For one thing, the economy is actually pretty good, and it’s a whole lot better than four years ago (and a whole lot better than Romney was willing to offer).

That’s due in part to the President of the US, who is a Democrat and supports Clinton’s nomination.

Sadly, this may be Democratic wishful thinking. Conservatives don’t really think that it’s wrong to favor white guys over others. That was a rough lead in to Paul by Al and Sarah, but Sarah got the point across. There’s bigger fish to fry. Defeating Trump is the most important thing that the Democrats must do.

I wish they’d go further than this. It’s not just defeating Trump. It’s rolling back the GOP at all levels, and it means an extraordinary and sustained GOTV in every election.

You can’t just win the WH and think it’ll be okay. That’s the strategy that led to losses in 2010 and 2012 and 2014 in Congress and statehouses. You don’t get to move an agenda if you can’t get the votes, and the Democrats lost in those places due to complacency and a failure to stand up for the President’s agenda with Obamacare. Instead of running away, they needed to fight.

The GOP obstructionism is a direct result from thinking that the Democrats will not draw the line. It’s a position of a bully and it has to be stopped.

Hillary’s in the best position to do that because she understands value of coordinating and coalition building to get things done.

Right and I was agreeing with Roy’s thesis that conservatism has slipped in large part because conservatives attempt to deny their past when it comes to racial issues. Instead, they want to point to the Dixiecrats and ignore that the GOP/right courted those voters. Unlike, Roy, I don’t feel sad about ti at all though. The conservative movement in this country has always been toxic.

That might be true if the US looked like England now, or the US of 1980. But it doesn’t any more. Whites alone cannot overcome the how much minorities are skewed towards Democrats because a very large chunk of us Democrats will never vote for the racists.

Well, spending most of my life in states where conservatism has been both historically racist and politically extremely successful does make me skeptical of claims that explicitly racist rhetoric will doom a party. You’d better have some argument other than “you’re racist,” because the answer will be some version of “So what?”

re: #106 Belafon

That might be true if the US looked like England now, or the US of 1980. But it doesn’t any more. Whites alone cannot overcome the how much minorities are skewed towards Democrats because a very large chunk of us Democrats will never vote for the racists.

The states that have usually determined Presidential elections, like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, have electorates significantly whiter than the national average and changing very slowly. Counting on demographics won’t save Democrats if their percentage share of the white vote falls under the mid-40s in those states.

Well, spending most of my life in states where conservatism has been both historically racist and politically extremely successful does make me skeptical of claims that explicitly racist rhetoric will doom a party. You’d better have some argument other than “you’re racist,” because the answer will be some version of “So what?”

I’m certainly not about to pronounce US conservatism doomed because of its racism until I see a tag on its toe.

While I despise the conservative movement as it is today, I have to share his sadness. The US does need a viable center-of-right party without the white nationalist shit if only to keep the Democratic Party honest.

There’s one party counting on demographics, and it isn’t the Democrats. Democrats are ahead of the curve on representing all races (by about 20 years I believe), but they’re not excluding whites. To flip yours, Republicans keep counting on whites voting > 60% for Republicans, which is happening in non-presidential years, for sure, but not during the presidency any more.

Moonbats are every bit into the “tough love” philosophy as wingnuts are, that if you make things as shitty and horrific as possible, the people will suddenly rise up and shrug off the old order in favor of the one that you will lead to the promised land.

Which is what has them so pissed right now, because things are going so well that there’s not enough angry people in the Dem ranks to sustain that sort of appeal to authoritarianism.

You’re 100% right about that. They’re mad that that while people want change, they don’t want their revolution. We don’t need a revolution. Revolutions should be as rare as possible and I don’t take Bernie’s revolution seriously anyhow since it’s small tent as hell.

re: #328 JasonA

This woman needs to run for something.

I’m sure we can find a spot in the Senate for her.

Anyone want to do a count of the times Trump has actually been mentioned tonight? It’s as though they were talking around a misbehaving child in timeout.

It’s kinda weird how many Sisters of Mercy songs have politically relevant titles.

They’re playing a hotel in Poland on August 5th and I had this crazy notion to visit there for a weekend and see them live… Maybe rent a motorcycle and poke around the Baltic for a weekend. Texas is making me insane.

If it happens, it won’t be until 2020. She’s stated on more than one occasion that she put her professional life on hold until both daughters are grown - Sasha doesn’t turn 18 until 2019.

You don’t suppose there’s a little bit of Borgia style in the political mix too?

I hear the roar of a big machine
Two worlds and in between
Love lost, fire at will
Dum-dum bullets and shoot to kill
I hear dive bombers, and
Empire down, empire down
I hear the sons of the city and dispossessed…

They’re playing a hotel in Poland on August 5th and I had this crazy notion to visit there for a weekend and see them live… Maybe rent a motorcycle and poke around the Baltic for a weekend. Texas is making me insane.

If you do, just be respectful when hunting Pokemon. ;)
