The Trump Campaign Invited a Notorious White Supremacist Radio Host to the GOP Convention

And gave him press credentials
Politics • Views: 56,753

A little while back, LGF revealed that the son of the GOP presidential candidate, Donald Trump Jr., was following overt white supremacists on Twitter. Within hours after publishing our article, Trump Jr. unfollowed both of the racist accounts we reported.

Almost immediately after our article went out, we started hearing excuses from Trump apologists, saying that following someone on Twitter doesn’t necessarily mean you agree with their views. But while that may be true in some cases, there are reasons to believe Trump Jr. does indeed see eye to eye with antisemites and white supremacists.

First, he didn’t just follow these people; he liked their tweets (clicked on Twitter’s little heart symbol). Second, Trump and many of his staff have rather long histories of retweeting white supremacists and promoting them, both on Twitter and elsewhere; for example, at one point the campaign selected a very well-known white nationalist leader to be a California delegate, and in March the campaign gave press credentials to another notorious white supremacist, James Edwards, host of the long-running racist and antisemitic radio show The Political Cesspool, after Donald Trump Jr. was interviewed on his show.

That’s right — the son of the GOP presidential candidate granted an interview to an openly white supremacist radio host in Tennessee.

If that isn’t enough evidence of Trump Jr.’s unsavory connections to antisemites and white supremacists, though, we’ve now learned that the campaign didn’t only invite James Edwards to attend a rally and give him a press pass, and they didn’t distance themselves from him after this was exposed.

In April, shortly after James Edwards interviewed Trump Jr. and got press credentials from the campaign, the Trump campaign actually invited this white supremacist to attend the Republican Convention in Cleveland.

And Edwards posted all about it on his blog, including a series of photos showing him posing proudly with all kinds of celebrities including Ann Coulter, Stephen Baldwin, Dennis Kucinich, the execrable Milo Yiannopoulos, Trump surrogate Roger Stone, Dinesh D’Souza, and even… Dan Rather.

We’ve saved Edwards’ boastful post at archive.is: James Edwards Attends the Republican National Convention, so you don’t have to actually visit his awful hate site unless you want to see it for yourself.

I was on vacation at the end of April when I received the invitation to attend the conventions. My initial reaction was to simply not go. I loathe business travel and can hardly stand to be apart from my family for more than a few hours. I did, however, forward the e-mail to a few of my trusted advisers who unanimously petitioned for me to reconsider. I certainly realized this to be a unique opportunity but dreaded the process. In the end I was persuaded, but just barely. After submitting all of my personal information to the Secret Service for another background check I was cleared and later informed that my press credentials had been approved.

It’s been written many times that racists, antisemites and white supremacists are feeling emboldened and legitimized by the Trump campaign, and if you read Edwards’ post about it you’ll see this new sense of empowerment on full display. It’s no exaggeration to say he’s ecstatic.

But the fact that they’re inviting vile hateful people like this to the GOP convention as if they were mainstream media makes this accusation more than credible — it makes it undeniable.

To be honest, I think Donald Jr. might be a more odious personality than his father. More emotionally stable, but a more sophisticated, further devolved set of views.

Charles,

Trump’s done more than simply heart tweet the white supremacists. He was quote tweeting them. Copying/pasting their entire statement into his tweets.

That takes effort. That shows intent.

You can accidentally hit a like or a retweet. But he’s liked/retweeted 75+ tweets by white supremacists since entering the race last year. That’s no accident. This is done with malice and intent.

The dog whistles are loud and clear, and the white supremacists have made their presence known.

So what happened to this desire for optimism? Trump is gloom and doom 24/7.

Reading the two linked articles from downstairs on the Death of the GOP. Avik Roy seems to actually get it, and comprehends the point in time where Modern Conservatism went off the rails. It seems to me that a lot of other Conservatives still don’t get that Trump isn’t an aberration, but rather a culmination of the takeover of the GOP by White Nationalism.

From the column:

There probably is no Democratic governor or senator more palatable than Kaine to constitutional conservatives. Such conservatives are eager to bring presidential power back within constitutional constraints, and Kaine is among the distressingly small minority of national legislators interested in increased congressional involvement in authorizing the use of military force.

The idea that there are conservatives out there who really want to restrain the presidency is kind of a joke. I spent enough time in Federalist Society circles during the GWBush administration to know that this is a talking point that the vast, vast majority only care about when a non-conservative holds the office. There are a few true believers out there, to be sure, but most of them are also the sorts that still have a problem with much of the 20th century.

re: #63 HappyWarrior

Yup. Nearly all the Founding Fathers had government experience in some fashion.

The Founding Fathers: A Brief Overview

The 55 delegates who attended the Constitutional Convention were a distinguished body of men who represented a cross section of 18th-century American leadership. Almost all of them were well-educated men of means who were dominant in their communities and states, and many were also prominent in national affairs. Virtually every one had taken part in the Revolution; at least 29 had served in the Continental forces, most of them in positions of command.

Political Experience

The group, as a whole, had extensive political experience. At the time of the convention, four-fifths, or 41 individuals, were or had been members of the Continental Congress. Mifflin and Gorham had served as president of the body. The only ones who lacked congressional experience were Bassett, Blair, Brearly, Broom, Davie, Dayton, Alexander Martin, Luther Martin, Mason, McClurg, Paterson, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Strong, and Yates. Eight men (Clymer, Franklin, Gerry, Robert Morris, Read, Sherman, Wilson, and Wythe) had signed the Declaration of Independence. Six (Carroll, Dickinson, Gerry, Gouverneur Morris, Robert Morris, and Sherman) had affixed their signatures to the Articles of Confederation. But only two, Sherman and Robert Morris, underwrote all three of the nation’s basic documents. Practically all of the 55 delegates had experience in colonial and state government. Dickinson, Franklin, Langdon, Livingston, Alexander Martin, Randolph, Read, and Rutledge had been governors, and the majority had held county and local offices.

What experience does Trump have? Avoided the draft. No public service. Inherited his fortune and has made no effort to engage in charitable giving personally.

Just like the Founders… /////

BTW, the bolded part is an interesting bit of trivia. Only two men signed the Declaration, Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution: Sherman and Robert Morris.

Yup. Nearly all the Founding Fathers had government experience in some fashion.

I always thought Sherman was well overdue for a well done academic biography. He’s the reason why Congress is the way it is too with the House being the larger body and the Senate being the smaller body and equal numbers for each state. He’s also IIRC one of the few founders that did not come from affluence.

re: #70 Blind Frog Belly White

It’s important to remember that Carter was coming across as stern and pessimistic, that we all needed to come to terms with more limited expectations - 55 mph speed limits, sweaters in the White House to reduce energy consumption, etc. It was a fucking drag. It suggested that the American System was only marginally better than the Soviet System.

Reagan, OTOH, expressed confidence in America and the American System, that we were ‘The Shining City On The Hill’, and it was ‘Morning In America’.

This is the difference between Reagan and Trump. Yes, Reagan was divisive, but he believed America as an idea could work. Trump’s selling the idea that America DOESN’T work and that we need to give up some of our most cherished notions of who we are in order to survive - we can no longer be the beacon of freedom to the world; we can no longer be the land of opportunity where anyone can come and succeed; we can no longer be the one essential country that holds it all together. Instead, we have to cower behind walls and oceans, pull back from the world, save what crumbs we have for ourselves. It’s a profoundly different vision.

Yeah Carter was pretty grim his whole presidency. Not particularly an endearing figure in the 70’s. Can see why he lost. But he’s had a great post-presidency.

Exactly, compare the city on the hill and morning in America with Trump’s spiel. It’s totally different. No fan of Reagan at all obviously but Reagan’s presetnation was totally different than Trumps.

Reagan: America is a shining city on a hill!

Trump: Götterdämerung!

I was pleasantly surprised to see someone who had made his bones in the conservative movement be so honest about the conservative movement and race.

There is nothing racist about “standing athwart history, yelling Stop” in isolation.

However, this first came up in connection with desegregating the Jim Crow South, and it is this context that makes it racist.

US movement conservatism has been inherently racist since the beginning. The southern strategy just applied the finishing touches.

This is why, whenever Robert Reich posts something about changing the Primary process on FB, I always say we need to be careful and deliberate in what we do and address EVERY aspect, not just the ones that Sanders supporters don’t like. Backwards human belief systems still hang around:

‘Hyena’ hired to have sex with girls as young as 12 arrested on Malawian president’s orders

A HIV-infected man who is paid to have sex with adolescent girls as part of a practice which marks their passage to womanhood has been arrested on the Malawian president’s orders. Peter Mutharika issued the instruction just days after “hyena” Eric Aniva gave a media interview in which he confessed to sleeping with “school-going girls”.

Aniva, from the southern district of Nsanje, is one of 10 hyenas in the area who are paid to provide what is known as sexual “cleansing”. Following their first menstruation, teenage girls are forced to have sex with hyenas like Aniva over a three-day period. He is paid between $4 and $7 (£3 and £5) by the girl’s family.

Other instances of his sex work include sleeping with woman who have had an abortion, or with a widow before she can bury her dead husband. If the girl or woman does not take part in the “cleansing” process, it is believed that bad luck will befall them or their community.

re: #70 Blind Frog Belly White

It’s important to remember that Carter was coming across as stern and pessimistic, that we all needed to come to terms with more limited expectations - 55 mph speed limits, sweaters in the White House to reduce energy consumption, etc. It was a fucking drag. It suggested that the American System was only marginally better than the Soviet System.

Reagan, OTOH, expressed confidence in America and the American System, that we were ‘The Shining City On The Hill’, and it was ‘Morning In America’……..

I think that Trump and his followers believe that they are optimistic. While it is true that they see America as broken, they believe they can fix it easily with walls, militarized police, isolationism and negotiating better deals. Meanwhile, democrats hold what conservatives consider to be dystopian views———-a future with harsh climate change and mass extinctions! And democrats see growing income inequality as threatening the middle class and social stability.

And hey, conservatives are optimistic that when Trump takes over that they can act out their fantasies of reprisals, targeted bigotry and ethnic purges.

re: #152 Testy Toad T

I mean, we might just be arguing semantics. The primary was fair IMHO, but it certainly was not on a level playing field (because Hillary Clinton has been working tooth and nail for decades to build her foundation within the party, but shhhhh).

Yeah and honestly that’s something that maybe Shaun will understand more in time. A lot of his tweets this Spring showed me that he really didn’t understand the process. It’s quite honestly why I’m not as bad at the younger Sanders supporters like himself who haven’t been around the block as much. I have much less sympathy for the old ones who should know better. Fact of the matter is, Shaun’s saying he’s going to vote for Clinton, he acknowledges Trump is awful, and he’s not claiming crazy shit like Bernie endorsed her in distress. In short, he’s not being a pathetic jerk like H.A. Goodman who taunts Clinton supporters like a D movie villain while twirling his mustache while he promises to build an indictment machine that will indict Hillary Clinton before she was even born.

Disturbing Images Of Juvenile Prisoners Being Abused In Australia

The prime minister of Australia said he is “shocked and appalled” after seeing footage of children being hooded, shackled, stripped and held on the floor by prison guards at a youth detention facility in the Northern Territory.

[…]

Leaders in the Australian aboriginal community also spoke out against the mistreatment of prisoners. Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory are incarcerated at rates far higher than the general population, the Guardian reports:

“Indigenous youths make up 96 percent of the young prison population in the Northern Territory and indigenous people are overwhelmingly represented in the [territory] prison system across the board. Indigenous people make up 30 percent of the overall population of the [territory].”

This is why, whenever Robert Reich posts something about changing the Primary process on FB, I always say we need to be careful and deliberate in what we do and address EVERY aspect, not just the ones that Sanders supporters don’t like. Too often, “It’s Not Fair!” really means “It doesn’t favor my candidate!”

I’m honestly disappointed that Reich could be so misguided. He’s been around. I really think he has a personal thing against the Clintons though and that effects how his judgment here. He’s not a bad guy in my book but I think he’s been guilty this campaign of letting his personal biases against the Clintons get in the way of the reality. But yeah too often “not fair” means doesn’t favor my guy. Never saw Clinton trying to claim the midwest caucuses that greatly favored Bernie were illegitimate. I get that Bob wants a more progressive Democratic Party. It’s something I sympathize with too.

Yup. Nearly all the Founding Fathers had government experience in some fashion.

The wingers could just listen to the Hamilton soundtrack and know about 100 times more than they know about the founders (and maybe it would improve their sour personalities to spend a little time enjoying the music!)

I’ve been running it for over a year and am very happy with it. I’d take it and take the normal precautions. I was able to roll back when I had issues and then re-upgrade once they were resolved. I think once you activate it for the license number you can do that if needed.

He found this article about a DNC staffer being killed in Washington, DC. His reaction? “apparently the DNC found and plugged the leak” and Hillary is using his death to score political points.

It’s kinda fascinating, watching him spiral out. Apparently, Hillary is The Great Enemy of All Life; nothing she does can possibly have virtue and anyone who supports her is the enemy.

Also, when Chuck posted a picture of himself at the RNC, he added “Thanks Peter” — which is probably Peter Thiel. If he’s managed to get next to Peter Thiel it could be really bad news.

Peter Thiel: Billionaire RNC Speaker, Gay Man, and Guest of Neo-Fascist

Peter Thiel, the gay tech billionaire who sits on Facebook’s board, will soon address a gathering of elderly white people as the guest of a pontificating neo-fascist. We refer not to Donald Trump’s Republican National Convention, though Thiel will also be speaking there - on its final night, right after Jerry Falwell Jr. and an hour or so before Trump. Rather, this is the annual conference of the Property and Freedom Society, taking place in September in Bodrum, Turkey.

As the SPLC details in its report, the gatherings of the Property and Freedom Society are salons for white supremacists and their fellow travelers, and for libertarian extremists whose ideology creeps right up to crypto-Nazism. These are not the fun, pot-smoking libertarians with the ponytails. These are paleo-libertarians, so far to the right they think Milton Friedman’s a socialist. They long for the freedom to discriminate at will, for reasons racial, religious, aesthetic or capricious. They yearn for the abolition of the state, and the supreme and eternal reign of whoever’s smart, strong, rich, or talented enough to hoard all the resources when it’s gone.

The group’s founder and Thiel’s host is Hans Hermann-Hoppe, an anarcho-capitalist former professor at the University of Nevada. Hoppe sets the tone for these gatherings. In his book Democracy: The God That Failed, he envisions a stateless “libertarian order” that purges homosexuals and literally anyone who believes in democracy. “They will have to be physically separated and expelled from society,” Hoppe writes, referring to “advocates of parasitism, homosexuality, or communism,” among other undesirables.

Exactly. I’ve known my share of them over the years and it just amazes me how they fail to see that business and corporate power can be just as if not more dangerous in some cases. They also have a huge blind eye to local and state abuses too. Remember Ron and Rand Paul always go after the federal drug war but they don’t really talk too much about the dracoian punishments on drugs within their own states. And then there’s how they view civil rights. Gary Johnson not knowing who Harreitt Tubman was really said a lot to me.

That’s just great. They really are too idealistic for me. It’s why I often find myself being the most pragmatic in the room when I’ve talked with them. I have done some things when our interests crossed over. I was part of an anti drug war student gorup in college. re: #323 Blind Frog Belly White

I seriously had some young Libertarian on FB tell me that under Libertarianism employers couldn’t exploit workers, because employers wouldn’t be allowed to exploit workers.

So I asked him, “How will you prevent it?”

He replied, “It wouldn’t be allowed!”

I laughed out loud with that.

They can’t even critically assess their own ideas.

It’s like they tunnel in on one thing they like and their brain locks in on it and rejects everything else.

I saw another interesting name that was a Bernie endorser too, Collin Peterson, who is one of the most conservative Dems in the House. I think a lot of Bernie supporters don’t want to admit this but they did get some support in some places by default because a lot of conservative Dems really don’t like Clinton at all. Not moderates but conservative ones.

The thing that needs to be said about that is Ron Paul’s fine with your individual state (I know you’re Canadian Sharp) making as strict drug laws as possible. Now to also be fair, he’s okay with what Colorado and Washington have done too but the point is, what he is espousing really isn’t liberty. It’s the idea that states can impose their own form of big government conservatism if they see fit and that’s okay with him.

That sounds quite similiar to my Dad’s family. Maybe my Dad’s mom was a little taller than yours and his dad a litlte shorter. My grandfather always told us that his mother was particularly tall but we’ve never even seen so much as a photograph of her and I never knew his siblings. Their father was quite short though. 5’4 according to his draft registration card. This does get me thinking though. Is there any correlation between sibling order and height because my Dad is the tallest of his siblings, my grandfather too, and it looks very likely my youngest brother will be slightly taller than me and my brothers. I know there shouldn’t be any correlation but science is filled with weird things like that.
