In Which Donald Trump Encourages Russia to Spy on the US

Then he told a female reporter to shut up
Politics • Views: 39,330

So today, Donald Trump was so desperate for media attention after two days of the Democratic convention that he held a press conference (which in itself is pretty outrageous, since by tradition US parties don’t campaign during each other’s conventions), and actually encouraged Russia to spy on the US.

Yes, he really did this.

DORAL, Fla. — Donald J. Trump said Wednesday that he hoped Russia had hacked Hillary Clinton’s email, essentially encouraging an adversarial foreign power’s cyberspying on a secretary of state’s correspondence.

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Mr. Trump said, staring directly into the cameras. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

Mr. Trump’s call was an extraordinary moment at a time when Russia is being accused of meddling in the U.S. presidential election. His comments came amid questions about the hacking of the Democratic National Committee’s computer servers, which researchers have concluded was likely the work of two Russian intelligence agencies.

Later in the news conference, when asked if he was really urging a foreign nation to hack into the private email server of Mrs. Clinton, or at least meddle in the nation’s elections, he dismissed the question. “That’s up to the president,” Mr. Trump said, before finally saying “be quiet” to the female questioner. “Let the president talk to them.”

Needless to say, this isn’t going over very well with people whose business it is to protect the US from foreign governments’ cyber-espionage.

Mike Pence immediately got out in front of the press and tried to do some clean-up:

But of course, Trump then doubled down with another tweet making it very clear he wasn’t joking:

This is absolutely unprecedented behavior… again! … for a presidential candidate. And I’m wondering if there’s any way to stop Trump from receiving national security briefings, since he clearly does not understand the implications of what he just said.

I hope Reince Priebus is proud of what his party has done by nominating someone this irresponsible and reckless.

UPDATE at 7/27/16 11:19:24 am by Charles Johnson

And believe it or not, this isn’t the first time Trump has asked Russia to spy on his political enemies.

UPDATE at 7/27/16 11:24:22 am by Charles Johnson

Newt Gingrich says this was just a joke, even though Trump has already doubled down and made it clear it wasn’t.

UPDATE at 7/27/16 11:32:56 am by Charles Johnson

By the way, those “30,000 emails” Trump says are “illegally deleted” and missing? They weren’t illegally deleted and they’re not missing.

This was the first time it really hit me just how scary and fucked up this country is going to be after Clinton wins the Presidency. The 27% (are they now the 38%?) aren’t going to suddenly turn into sane, sober, rational actors in December. I don’t know how long it’s going to take to shove this baddest, most rancid, most intense bad crazy back into the bottle. It’s going to be more than a presidency. Is it going to take a generation?

Under the traditional understanding of the word, this was treason. As a constitutional matter, it is nearly impossible to prove or prosecute but under any rational standard, this was treasonous.

I know that second hand. My cousin lives in the UK. She says that people there are definitely not going to think as highly of the US if we elect him if it’s even particularly cloes and to be honest I don’t blame them. This country has done a lot to inspire good will over the years. We haven’t always been perfect I concede but electing Trump would be a middle finger to the entire planet.

re: #1 Backwoods_Sleuth

Trump’s response: SEE!! The convention’s empty. They don’t care! I win because I put seats in the stands!

That’s how he sees everything. It’s a prism of approval and ratings. That, not objective reality and policy, is what matters to Trump.

He thinks that saying outrageous and possibly illegal statements is what will get him ratings (or what he thinks will be votes). He probably counts his Twitter likes and retweets and thinks that he has to be more outrageous to get more than others.

That’s not the job of President (you know, the job he seeks).

He doesn’t even have the first clue what it takes to be President.

That’s huge.

Yet the GOP nominated him to be their candidate for president. The GOP wont fight him or strip him of the nomination because they still need his voters’ support. They’ve put their own craven politics ahead of all else, including national security. All their talk of being strong on national defense, law enforcement, and all the rest is just so much BS.

I can talk til I turn blue about how the GOP screwed first responders after 9/11 for years. They treated them as bad or worse than the liquidators from Chernobyl. Disposable heroes. These are the men and women who risked their lives to find remains of those killed at the WTC, and many have died as a result of exposures to the toxic brew in the air at Ground Zero. That’s unforgivable.

I am also preaching to the choir about the all lives matter/blue lives matter BS as a means to drowning out black lives matter; they claim to be for law enforcement, even as the daily news reports show law enforcement killing and shooting black men on a regular basis, and those cops avoiding criminal sanctions in the overwhelming number of cases (just today, we learned charges were dropped against the remaining cops in Baltimore because the prosecutors totally botched the case in Freddie Gray’s death). We now know that the van acted of its own accord and killed Gray. None of the 6 cops who were with him that day had anything to do with his death - his neck being snapped.

The GOP complains and caterwauls about how mothers of those killed spoke at the DNC, ignoring that cops and others spoke about the need to respect and honor the work the cops do, and to give them the tools that make their lives safer too (like gun control).

But this is far too rational a discussion to have, especially with the GOP. They’ve picked the irrational candidate whose reality is scripted reality tv shows, not a national election away from governing the most powerful and strongest nation on the planet. He never had any business running, but the GOP didn’t care. He won the GOP by being a louder and more brash bigot than everyone else.

Now, we’re seeing that he’s a security threat to the nation. The GOP wont do anything to stop him.

That leaves everyone else to do it.

It was all fun and games to snicker/sigh at the joke that Republicans saw the Democratic Party as a bigger enemy than our actual international enemies, until it became manifestly true.

I didn’t believe in Peak Trump, but I still thought there were some bridges that would simply never, ever, ever be crossed. That it wouldn’t even occur to people that there was a bridge there in the first place. Like you wake up one morning and then bob’s your uncle, going to drive mah truck over the Donald J. I’m somewhat more qualified than your average bear to answer this. Legally, the President is the font from which all security classification issues. It is through his specific legal delegation of this power that specific members of the Cabinet, and members of military leadership are able to issue findings on what is and is not classified, but it is all an extension of his personal power, and I don’t think there’s any real check on that.

I believe the briefings issued to candidates are a professional courtesy and an effort to keep the country running smoothly, and to prevent goof-ups like the non-existent “Missile Gap” that could result in candidates winning elections by being wrong about things. By law, I think Obama could choose not to tell Trump a goddamn thing, which would be unthinkable and unacceptable in a normal campaign, but this isn’t a normal campaign.

I think it might be the case that the briefing given to the candidates must be the same, so this might leave Clinton in the dark for a few months. Of course, I have no doubt of her ability to maintain an acceptable understanding of the geopolitical climate during that time.

The agency had become known for employing hundreds of Russians to post pro-Kremlin propaganda online under fake identities, including on Twitter, in order to create the illusion of a massive army of supporters; it has often been called a “troll farm.”

Look at what Biden said on Morning Joe concerning the fact that senators and reps no longer interact with each other on a personal level. You can much more easily demonize The Other when you refuse to talk to them.

This is the result of Fox and all those other shit heels polluting the water for so long. You have people like Tom Cotton who believe with all their hearts the propaganda they have grown up with (yes, grown up with!) How on earth do you counter that? We’re talking a generation to lose the crazy and that’s only if Fox, et al, goes away now. They won’t.

Yet the GOP nominee called on that very thing to happen. Multiple times.

Brainwashed by 25 years of LIBERALS BAD, DEMOCRATS EVIL, HATE, ANGER, ANGST. And they’re not stopping. Fox, Rush, et al, continue to this minute with this same bullshit. A good amount of our population are brainwashed, plain and simple.

They won’t.

Trump wants a foreign country to hack the US.

Murdoch is a foreign agent (sorry, he’s not American, his only interest in America [and elsewhere] is money).

We are seeing the results of foreign entities engaging in our voting process (Bibi with his bomb in congress anyone?)

We’re fucked. We’re deeply and truly fucked.

The US needs something like a mass deprogamming effort.

There’s something uniquely American that the fascist toad who would upend the world has no grander purpose behind it than wanting people to take him seriously.

Mussolini wanted to restore Rome. Hitler wanted a thousand-year Reich. Donald Trump demands the hugest, classiest rallies, the most clapping, the loudest cheers.

he is a sick man with an aggravated case of narcissistic personality disorder and if he is president the entire world with have to deal with his mental illness

Here is a problem with the “calls for hacking claim” The server doesn’t exist anymore. It has been decommissioned. It is either sitting in an FBI evidence room or if it has been returned now that the investigation has been closed I imagine the hard drives have been pulled and sent through an industrial shredder at this point.

The right wing smokescreen continues.

Fox News brings on Jill Stein to talk about how the DNC sabotaged Bernie’s campaign.

[Embedded content]

Right, because millions of people who voted for Hillary were in on the conspiracy. These people are delusional, and Fox feeds this alt-reality. It’s fact free and full of bias.

But we should listen to a loon like Stein. Right.

I won’t sign up for it. My son has an account I think, and I worry about that. I’ve already had online stalker issues in my life, I won’t just kick that door open again. How long before someone is raped or murdered because of doxxing and the harassment encouraging that?

This does tie in with Trump and the hoardes of assholes that idolize him. He, and in turn the GOP and Our Stupid Media are enabling this behavior. And the message is, from the top down, that it’s ok to bully, assault, harass and ruin other people’s lives. It’s all clickbait and team sports and fuck anyone who gets in the way of that.

Twitter needs to do more, but this isn’t twitter’s fault. It’s all the men that did that. They should be punished, more than just being banned from twitter.

While I very much agree with that statement, at some point you have to go beyond identifying the “true source” of a bad thing and look at what enables the bad thing to happen.

The fact is there have always been bad men and bad women, and to some extent there always will be. We can’t do a whole lot to change that in the short term.

What we can do is prevent those bad men and women from doing bad things. Rape and death threats are pretty clear cut: nuke the accounts. Then we can talk about what we need to do to rehabilitate the benighted people whose accounts have been nuked.

About this Poster

My South Minneapolis neighborhood has an unusually urban wooded gully where unseen teenagers transform trails into bike courses and fallen trees into elaborate shelters. It has inspired a comic I’m working on about a boy’s friendship with a mysterious woodland giant, and also my poster, as I wondered how much fun it would be to have a dirt bike and a giant at your disposal.

Let’s just ignore that the House GOP went out of their way to invite Bibi to speak before Congress, which is something not done in ordinary circumstances. They wanted to screw Obama and all over the Iran deal, which has actually extended the time before Iran can go nuclear from as little as 6 months to 10 years plus 6 months.

It’s worth remembering that that particular Lizard identifies as conservative. In practice, they also appear to identify as a troll these days, as smug one-liners appears to be their primary contribution.

This morning’s news leaves me feeling sick. I don’t understand how people can look at that and go LOL YOU’RE JUST BEING PLAYED. Full stop, it’s wrong. If you can’t see that, you’re a huge part of what’s wrong with politics right now.

I’m glad President Obama is speaking tonight. I’m hoping his speech will help focus on the good. The hope. The optimism. The possible. That’s where he excels as a speaker, for me - Bill Clinton might be the master of the story, but Obama is the master of hope.

If we’re going to talk weather. I’d like some of what the folks at Weather Underground are smoking this week. Their forecast for us is in the low to mid 80s all week. Then, they revise it for the actual current forecast. So right now our high is predicted to be 89° and the current temp (at 1 pm) is 91°. Fortunately, I don’t think it will get up to the Nat’l Weather Service prediction of 97°, but certainly it will get closer than the 89° we’ve already blasted through. And did I mention smoke from the Soberanes fire? Nowhere near as bad here as some places, but still.

It’s simpler: he doesn’t even recognize that there are rules that apply to anybody.

Trump’s Razor says he made a joke, then realized it really jolted people to attention in the press conference, which he interprets as approval, which made him double down on it as not-a-joke.

Someone suggested earlier that Poland might alert its military chiefs to begin developing a nuclear weapon in case Trump wins and NATO collapses or is left to its own devices.

This is a very real possibility and not just Poland. The “country” pages at Global Security WMD site make fascinating reading.
In the 1960s, the Italian government, fearing that the US nuclear umbrella might be politically reliable, began the secret development of its own nuclear warheads for a completely independent nuclear deterrent. More remarkably, they developed a submarine launched ballistic, “Alfa,” and secretly tested it.
Despite the chronic instability of the Italian government in that period, not a word of this leaked out until after the Cold War. Italy signed the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty in 1975 and is not regarded as a proliferation risk today, at least not until Trump came along.
Similarly, peace-loving Sweden and Switzerland worked on their own nuclear weapons programs for many years, up into the 60s and 70s. In the 50s, Sweden publicly announced an intention to acquire nuclear weapons.* Sweden cancelled its nuclear plans in 1968, Switzerland in 1977. Separated plutonium was not removed from Sweden until 2012.
In the 1980s, apartheid South Africa actually built and deployed 6 or 7 fission bombs. This program was dismantled during the transition to majority rule, and much documentation released.
The project shows how easily an advanced European country could do it, probably in a matter of weeks, months at the outside.

Solid rocket boosters are substantially less efficient than liquid rockets for satellite launch vehicles, and development of really large solid motors is not trivial.

Inishturk, Ireland, has a population of 58 and its people—according to a widely circulated Internet rumor—have offered refuge to any Americans who want to flee from a Donald Trump presidency. This charming documentary by MEL Films, Make Inishturk Great Again, takes us to the sparsely inhabited island to get the locals’ perspectives on America, the presidential election, and what Trump has said about Ireland. The film has an obvious perspective on Trump that is far from impartial, but it’s entertaining and adventurous nonetheless. To see more films from MEL, visit their website and Vimeo page.

We’re going out of town this weekend, of course, and I don’t really want to sit in the backseat for a three hour trip.

Take a coloring book, some crayons and maybe a pillow. It could be more fun than you think.

Time to get back to “work.” I’m getting the drawloom set up, so I’ve got the warp measured and wound onto the beam. Now I’m threading the pattern heddles. 600 of them. Then those very same threads get to be put through the “ground” heddles. 600 of them too… But when I get it all done, it’s playtime (probably early next week.)

I decided it was too hot to do the actual work I had planned for today.

They did that already, with designs modern enough to utilize compact two-point implosion.

Those designs are classified, so the swedes would have to research and come up with their own variants of them. Same goes with a gun-type device, but it’s basically have a HEU bullet and target on business a howitzer and just enough gunpowder to make the pieces slam together and stay together to initiate the chain reaction.

We know how this sort of situation would work in Russia.. The President would receive a bullet in the back of his brain. China would simply disappear their President. But does the USA have a way to legally stop a personal vendetta order by Trump using nuclear weapons, or even conventional means?

Holy crap, read the whole thing - it’s like she just finished lurking on this thread:

Against the backdrop of allegations that Russia is already trying to intervene in the U.S. presidential race on Trump’s behalf, Donald J. Trump took the next step towards true madness today, publicly calling on a foreign government to commit a felony against his American rival on his behalf.

There is literally nothing in the American tradition that’s similar to this. Nothing.
Trump is taking his candidacy, his party, and his country into unchartered waters.

Also consider what we’re learning about Trump’s perspective on intelligence. As far as he’s concerned, there’s nothing wrong with urging an unfriendly foreign state to commit a cybercrime against an American for political purposes. If Trump heads the U.S. executive branch, and has some authority over the CIA and NSA, is anyone prepared to argue that he’ll be restrained and responsible?

What more could Trump do to convince people about the dangers of his candidacy? How is this not a disqualifying moment?

Try to imagine - no, really, take a moment to think about - how significant a scandal it would be if Hillary Clinton publicly urged Russia to do her a favor, target a GOP rival, and help her win an election. How quickly would her career in public life end? How many congressional hearings and investigations would Republicans demand?

I’ve been watching this bizarre presidential race every day since it began. It’s never been scarier than it is right now.

Section 4 is the only part of the amendment that has never been invoked.[21] It allows the Vice President, together with a majority of either “the principal officers of the executive departments” (i.e., the Cabinet) or of “such other body as Congress may by law provide”, to declare the President disabled by submitting a written declaration to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. As with Section 3, the Vice President would become Acting President.

The simple answer is that it’s a private group, the same answer we give to why the Democrats can control who gets to run for their nomination. I don’t think most of these people freak out over it because they are adults, those who want to can pray, those who don’t know they can stand there.

Do not make the mistake of thinking it is coincidental that the Japanese paid this development cost and now make extensive use of solid rocket motors on their launch vehicles.

The Japanese Epsilon launcher is a ready-to-go ballistic missile in drag, all stages solid-fuelled and easily tubed in a protected silo if desired. Even more interestingly they had a British-designed Magnox reactor in operation until it was shut down and decommissioned about five years ago. Cognoscenti will be aware that the Magnox reactor was capable of short-cycling fuel rods or exposing depleted uranium to neutron flux for short periods to make weapons-grade Pu-239, similar to the Soviet RMBK-4 design of infamous memory. They also had a prototype fuel reprocessing plant based on the PUREX system for separating out Pu from spent fuel which has been replaced by a full-production line at Rokkaisho.

They have the sodium-cooled breeder reactor at Monju too which despite a lot of technical failures is still being kept operational, another possible source of weapons-grade Pu239 if needed.

Here’s the kind of story that is rarely covered in American media, much less among wingnuts:

Attack on Muslims and Dalits rock RS

Parliament was rocked again on Wednesday over the persecution of Muslims and Dalits after two Muslim women were brutally attacked in Madhya Pradesh (MP) for carrying buffalo meat for sale, which a “cow vigilante” group took for beef.

The incident in Mandsaur comes just weeks after some Dalit youths were whip-lashed in public by cow vigilantes in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat.[…]

Police reached the spot after a long time and whisked the women away.

The meat in their possession, some 30 kilos, was sent for examination and was found to be buffalo rather than cow.

However, the two victims have been charged with possessing buffalo meat without a licence.

There were allegations that the women were assaulted by the vigilantes in police custody too.

[…]

“Police remained a mute spectator. They were Muslim women…it cannot be tolerated,” Mayawati said.

[…]

As noted, the victims themselves were jailed.

But apparently they did get bail, but it appears they are in double jeopardy:

Two Muslim women who were beaten for carrying ‘beef’ get bail

[…]

The two women were earlier booked under the stringent MP anti-cow slaughter act which provides for a maximum punishment of seven years. But after the lab test proved that they were carrying buffalo meat, they were charged under Madhya Pradesh Agriculture Cattle Preservation Act, 1959, which provides a maximum punishment of one year.

[…]

Here, for instance, is what House Speaker Paul Ryan had to say Wednesday on the matter of the growing consensus that the Kremlin was involved in the DNC hack, via a spokesman:

Russia is a global menace led by a serious thug. Putin should stay out of this election.

And here was what Trump’s own running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, had to say on the topic at roughly the same time Trump was rambling on at his press conference:

If it is Russia and they are interfering in our elections, I can assure you both parties and the United States government will ensure there are serious consequences.

What a day. I’m having serious computer problems that are driving me crazy and trying to follow some of this Trump insanity and that is making me doubly depressed.

Anyway, just turned on MSNBC to see Nina Turner, the Sanders supporter, saying she was told yesterday to NOT be a part of the Sanders roll call group yesterday. She seems hurt by it and not really wanting to describe what happened. She said Sanders told her himself.

Anyone have any idea what is going on there?

re: #410 Eric The Fruit Bat

Ah sorta like the BuzxFeed “Dear Kitten” ad-videos, where the established cat warns the kitten about the dreaded “vacooom”.

Our cat Craig, and his recently departed brother Conan, isn’t/wasn’t afraid of the vacuum. I was working from home one day and watched the cleaning lady vacuuming around them. The new kitten, Eartha, hasn’t met the vacuum yet…so we’ll see how she responds.

This is from my working from home yesterday…look how smitten Banjo is.

And to top it all, he’s a conservative, former leader of the Moderaterna party, the most right-wing you can get without getting into Nazi territory (SD).

For those of you that can, and want to preserve your sanity, watch the convention on C-SPAN or their online feed. They also have some of the speeches archived so you can hear what you missed. I have spared myself a broken TV and much cursing this way.

I will venture to say she is an asshole with a big mouth who refuses to Bust. Why on earth would Dems put her on the stage?

Hmm. Seems relatively sensible on twitter.

Hillary in her massive electronic exposure of classified information is in effect an enemy spy.

Can you defend her after that?

You cannot.

She’s going down in flames, and she’s going to make a deep smoking crater full of scrap metal.

Bye bye Hillary.

Your hatred of Hillary is totally off the charts. And your post reads like something from a cranky senile nursing home patient. Does it mean nothing to you that congressional hearings and an FBI investigation led to no recommendation for charges against Hillary?

LOL, you thought Obama would lose all 50 states in 2012…even though the polls at the time were neck and neck. You actually thought the gop would win NY, CA, MA, and other solid blue states? You really don’t know shit about politics. You might be the dumbest mofo who’s ever posted on this site. Go fuck a mannequin, sure as hell no one else will have you.
