Here’s our first thread of the day for the Democratic Convention; tonight’s going to be a big one, with lots of high-profile speakers like California Governor Jerry Brown, former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, a performance by Lenny Kravitz, and concluding with Vice President Joe Biden followed by President Obama.

Bold pronouncement so I can look stupid in a few hours: Obama directly and explicitly mentions bin Ladin getting whacked on his and Clinton’s watch.

Trump is the kind of jackass that would fall for a honey trap even if he knew that’s what it was, provided the bait looked good enough. He just doesn’t give a shit.

He’s the most negative possible version of the honey badger of politics.

Just a comment before bedtime (here in old Europe)

Have American politics really degenerated to the point that hacked information released by foreign intelligence agencies are capable of influencing the outcome of an election?

Because domestic political parties aren’t supposed to influence domestic elections.

I think DOCTOR Jill Stein is somewhat unclear on what a political party is or what it’s supposed to do… which frankly ain’t surprising.

Only if you actually print it out: otherwise, we know exactly what you mean…

And on a more SRS note, this idiot is actually considered any sort of “viable” Presidential candidate??

I’m from New York, where the quadrennial ballot is routinely adorned with a large number of “third” parties ( actually, more like”thirteenth” or ” fourteenth”, but who’s counting? ) with little chance of any real electoral success, so maybe I’m a bit jaded, but the Green Party as a serious contender with this third-tier hack in charge? Oy!

If “Dr. Stein” cared two shits about a third party she would do more than pop up every 4 yrs to run for President. Instead, she and her party members would be figuring out how to get into state and local politics and WIN. And honestly, in places like my neighborhood, IF they could come up with something coherent, they could probably make inroads because they are “not a Democrat”. They’d have to run conservative planks in their platform, but they could do it if they were serious. This is a game, a hobby, and I have to wonder how much money she makes off this shit. Not just her of course, but this third party nonsense isn’t taken seriously because it’s not serious.

If these people were really dedicated to making the country better they would work from the bottom up and start with local, then state level races. But they rarely if ever do that. And this is why they lose, over and over. One would almost think they like fucking shit up and syphoning votes away with their bullshit “populism”.

Erdogan going nuts in Turkey. How long before Trump praises his strong leadership?

Turkey issued arrest warrants Wednesday for 47 former staff of the Zaman newspaper, an official said, in a growing crackdown on citizens suspected of links to alleged coup mastermind Fethullah Gulen.

The official, declining to be named, said the swoop covers “executives and some staff including columnists”, describing Zaman as the “flagship media organisation” of the movement led by Gulen, a US-based preacher.

In March, Zaman and its sister English-language newspaper Today’s Zaman were taken over by state-appointed administrators and it has since taken a strongly pro-government line.

[…]

Erdogan is also set to visit Russia on August 9 to repair ties harmed by the downing of a Russian warplane by Turkish jets last year, officials said Tuesday, in an apparent sign of Turkey’s post-coup diplomatic strategy.

re: #75 Lidane

Cost’s on the right trajectory here. Problem is that this was the issue from day 1 when Trump announced he was running.

He was never qualified to run, and was already off and running with the white supremacists and bigot brigade, and no one inside the party thought this was a problem.

Then those bigots began flocking to him over the rest of the candidates, and the bigotry grew louder, and still the party didn’t think this was a problem.

Then Trump won a primary. Then another. Pretty soon, he was winning more than everyon e else running, and the others were dropping out, and still, the GOP didn’t think it was a problem.

That’s the problem. The problem isn’t Trump. It’s that the party enabled Trump because they fundamentally agreed with Trump on substance. Style was and remains the problem with them.

That’s why you still don’t see still elected members of the party elite calling Trump out, because they too rely on those voters to remain in office.

That’s what is at issue here.

And that’s why the problem is so much bigger than Trump. This is the GOP.

So long as you have blinders on and do not read anything about politics anywhere but here…and even that can be trying from time to time.

Say, did you know that Hillary is a fascist? Yep. Read that one earlier. I guess it is based on something to do with Hillary inviting former NY mayor Bloomberg to speak at the convention. Add that to her picking Tim Kaine who is in favor of big bank deregulation and Clinton is just like Trump…maybe even more so.

Color me honestly impressed since she was said to be one of the most obnoxious inside the campaign. You know if Bernie, Jane, Simone Sanders (the press secretary), and a lot of other people who were actually at the top of the campaign don’t feel a grudge, there’s no reason for their supporters to.

She was just on MSNBC too. I give her an OK…but she still seems to be saying Bernie’s backers will do what they want and Bernie can’t control any of that. And she seems to think their support is based on Hillary sticking to all their desires in the platform or else.

As I think about it, I really wonder whether they got completely played with the whole “I’ll run as an independent” thing. I can’t see him drawing the crowds and the media attention for an independent run. No, he needed the debates, and taking on the GOP candidates one after another.

This is an epic read:

To My Moderate Conservative Friends:

This is a tough time for you. For years, I’ve said “The Republican party is saturated with racist jerks who’d like to raze the Constitution to the ground,” and you said, “No, no, that’s not who we are, we believe in firm laws and equality.”

Then you wake up to discover that your official candidate’s a guy who literally doesn’t know how many articles the Constitution has, and David Duke is so thrilled by Trump’s candidacy he’s come out of the woodwork. You’re not a racist - I wouldn’t be friends with you if you were - but you’re realizing that Trump is representing an ignorant, anti-science, pro-white wing of the party that you tried very hard to convince me didn’t exist.
Worse, those people you claimed didn’t exist (or were just background noise) are, in fact, dominant.

That is a moment for soul-searching. And from what I see, y’all are doing it. And I commend you for that. And a lot of you are refusing to vote for Trump, as is correct.
However, while you’re soul-searching, take a moment to reflect deeper.

Because the party elders tried very hard to convince you that all of your fellow Republicans were as upstanding as you were - because they knew you might leave the party if you actually understood a lot of the people who stood with you were racists waiting for an excuse to stand back up again. This uncomfortable dissonance you’re feeling right now is because they knowingly suckered you into believing that your reasonable concerns were what most Republicans felt - and now you’re seeing that yeah, maybe not all, but a lot of Republicans are pulling that lever out of nationalistic white pride and foreign hatred.

You’ve been suckered already. This is a fact. It’s not shameful unless you refuse to learn from it.

Now.

I’d like you to ponder the fact that a lot of your hatred of Hillary Clinton may come from the same people who misled you about your fellow voters.

You’re not obliged to like her, of course. But consider that much of your reflexive “NEVER HILLARY!” information came from the same sources that told you yes, all your fellow Republicans want is what you want. Consider that a lot of the scandals around Hillary come from a thirty-year, well-funded, unending campaign to turn up dirt on her, and that campaign stemmed from the guys who suckered you.

I’m not saying she’s great. (Oh boy am I gonna unload on her in a second.) But if you’re seething with reflexive Hillary Hatred after years of headlines, take a moment to remember who fed you those headlines, and the other things they were feeding you.

Then reexamine that from a more sober point of view.

That’s all.

(And if you’re starting to type your frothing answer on WHY HILLARY IS THE DEVIL within five seconds of finishing this discussion, you have failed to ponder. Try again. Try harder.)

There is much more at the link. Go read.

That’s certainly possible. Catholics have long been liberal. Coming from a Catholic background and having gone to Catholic school from grade 1 through 12 I can say that with ease when compared to other religions. Sure there is dogma, but even that is treated in a liberal matter.

Here’s what we do know: Clinton’s suit was navy blue, and he wore a tonal cobalt tie in a shade similar to the Christian Siriano dress Michelle Obama wore the night before. (Some noted then that the dress matched the stage’s background. Clinton’s tie did too!) The suit had two buttons, a notch lapel, and full-cut trousers that broke substantially over his shiny black dress shoes. One might have even called it a “pantsuit.”

The LA Times’ Adam Tschorn noted that although we don’t know who made this suit, “if you stare at it long enough, a subtle tone-on-tone stripe becomes apparent.” Clinton accessorized with a watch Tschorn identified as a 47mm blue-faced Runwell watch by Shinola—a $550 Detroit-made timepiece. (It’s apparently patriotic enough for Clinton, although the FTC has its doubts.) The potential first gentleman also adorned his lapel with a Hillary campaign button. For jewelry, he wore his wedding ring.

As a fashion moment, it might have been a little underwhelming, but as a historical one, it was not. Clinton’s look stated clearly: I’m with her.

He told her because she refused to commit to not go off tearing down Clinton in her speech. He’d came to terms with the fact that Hillary was going to be the nominee and got behind the effort to defeat Trump weeks ago, Turner had plenty of time and notice to do the right thing by showing loyalty to his decision. Instead she chose to continue sewing dissent and working against his express wishes. This wasn’t something the DNC forced him to do, it’s something he knew he absolutely had to do in order to preserve his own legacy.

I imagine she’ll be out of office by her next election.

She’s not in office. She got appointed once, ran (I think unopposed) then decided she’d be great as SoS and lost her ass big time to a total wanker. She was doing some work for the Ohio Dem party (and supporting Hillary) until she jumped on the Bernie train and started running her mouth. Now, I imagine she’ll be quite unemployed.

Oh sorry, I thought she was an Ohio state senator or member of the state house of reps for some reason. You’re right. She’s probably gone then. And it won’t becaues she supported Bernie, it’s because she acted so nasty. Keith Ellison and Raul Grijava aren’t going anywhere and tehy supported him too but they weren’t nasty about it.

If you get blown out of the water in a purple state like Ohio 66-30 or whatever, just please go away and don’t waste my time. My brother is trying to argue that a vote for Jill Stein isn’t a vote for Trump, etc. So, rather than argue with him, I just replied with:

Voting is a right, and a responsibility. It’s not just up to the candidate/party to win you over. It’s up to you to choose among the candidates, considering not just who you’d like, but also considering the likely outcomes. Any way you slice it, only the major parties are likely to win the electoral votes from any given state. That’s just how it is. You must consider what you might wake up to on 9Nov, and you cannot take for granted that your vote won’t make the difference between an unpalatable scenario, and a nightmare scenario.

I fear that Trump’s candidacy, not even his election, has driven a stake through the heart of any further nuclear disarmament in Europe. The UK has 180 warheads, all for the Trident strategic SLBM (120 operational, 60 reserve). France has “less than 300” warheads, 48 deployed on SLBMs and 54 on short range air-launched missiles. These forces can threaten the Russian population, but they could not respond effectively to a Russian invasion force that deployed tactical nukes.

Trump, again, does not even have to win to stall or even reverse the disarmament process. European strategists can clearly see that a large part of the US population will support a candidate who would blithely abandon NATO. Their long term planning will be adjusted accordingly.

Sure. What’s wrong with encouraging espionage as long as Hillary gets yelled at?

Wonderful groundwork being done for the “release” of a supposed email saying anything Putin or the GOP want it to say. Time it right and there will be insufficient time before the election to refute it effectively. (And since it would be intended to be something with emotional impact there would be little that refuting it would actually do.)

In 1972, there was a breakin at the DNC, and records were stolen. That led to Watergate and the downfall of a president.

This is no different.

The technologies have changed, but the basics are the same.

This is attempting to coopt the election and mess with its outcome by using counter-intel and psyops. This is what Trump is hoping for.

This is what Wikileaks is doing.

All in an attempt to deny Hillary Clinton the presidency.

All to deny her her place in history.

It’s not gonna work.

Agreed. There’s no real vetting of anything they publish outside of ‘trust us’.
(Although (this wasn’t done by Wikileaks) remember the release of Victoria Nuland’s voicemail when she said: “F*ck the EU.”-so there may be some substance to this.)

Go Gabby.

Your fellow Congressmembers refused to act after a gunman nearly assassinated her, killed one of her staffers, 5 others including a judge. They refused to act after Columbine. Or Sandy Hook. Or VA Tech. Or any of the run-of-the-mill shootings and suicides that end up leaving 30,000 dead each year. That doesn’t begin to count the thousands more injured by gun violence each year.

The thing that stands in the way of change is the NRA. And voting the GOP out of office, because justice and the general welfare demands it.

The thing that stands in the way of change is the NRA.

The NRA has a lot of members and a lot of money and they are the definition of grievance single issue politics.

The dems have not forgotten the wipe out of 1994 after the Brady Bill. White working class voters do cling to their guns and they will crawl over broken glass to vote on gun issues.

re: #406 Backwoods_Sleuth

man…. I cry each time I see her… talk about voting your conscious, she was one of the blue dog caucus members that helped tipped the balance of the votes for the ACA. In return, she’s endured unbelievable wrath from the GOP, had her offices vandalized, had her own personal tragedy (and that of Tucson itself) marginalized by the GOP and the fuckers in the state made it part of their personal manifesto to undo any benefit that came from her decision.

I loathe the GOP folks (elected and not) who marked her recovery and state that she is a diminished person and rushed to get her removed from office and then worked the scam schemes to get Ron Barber removed from office. I was a passionate Democrat before, but they way that the GOP treated her like an enemy instead of the respect due an elected official makes me consider violence (although I won’t go there, I can understand the sentiments behind “I wish a motherfucker would”).

I was raised under the idea that we’re allowed to disagree with our political opponents but remember that we’re all Americans, unfortunately, it seems that GOP no longer believes that to be the case and they wonder why they’re now getting blowback from their stances and commentary now.

The media needs to fight fire with fire and give The Donald a taste of his own bombastic rhetoric and an ultimatum: Release your tax returns or your media coverage stops because we cannot do an effective job of informing the electorate with one side hiding details that the other side has already released.
