Trump Refuses to Endorse Paul Ryan and John McCain in GOP Primaries

Paul Ryan and John McCain have both criticized Donald Trump for his disgusting attacks on the gold star family of Khizr Khan and his wife, but neither of them have taken the next step of withdrawing their endorsements of Trump for the presidency.

Essentially, Ryan and McCain and many other Republicans have betrayed their own stated ethics and principles to continue backing Donald Trump.

And this is how the thin-skinned orange demagogue repays them: Trump refuses to support Paul Ryan, John McCain in upcoming Republican primaries.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is refusing to back House Speaker Paul D. Ryan in his upcoming primary election, saying in an interview Tuesday that he is “not quite there yet” in endorsing his party’s top-ranking elected official.

Trump also said he was not supporting Sen. John McCain in his primary in Arizona, and he singled out Sen. Kelly Ayotte as a weak and disloyal leader in New Hampshire, a state whose presidential primary Trump won handily.

With Ryan’s Wisconsin primary scheduled for next Tuesday, Trump praised the House speaker’s underdog opponent, Paul Nehlen, for running “a very good campaign.” Trump said that Ryan has sought his endorsement, but that as of now he is only “giving it very serious consideration.”

Trump is the perfect GOP politician for this era. He makes exactly two kinds of statement:

1) Deliberate lies

2) Bullshit spouted with reckless indifference at to whether it is true or false.

If I were a reporter, I’d be seriously tempted to get Trump on-record as stating a simple, true fact (e.g., ‘2 + 2 = 4’) to see if that would cause him to spontaneously combust.

Interesting report, if true…

As criticism mounted against Donald Trump Monday for his treatment of an American Muslim couple whose son died in the Iraq war, his campaign sent an appeal to Republicans in Congress to back him up, according to media reports. No one responded.

That would explain why he called in the wingnut hard core.

Could it be that the condemnation of Trump’s statements but not Trump himself is actually the GOP’s horribly inept attempt at letting Trump twist in the wind?

Mind you, I’m not giving Republicans the benefit of the doubt by any stretch - but these aren’t world-class political strategists we’re talking about here.

I think they’re betting their careers on the prospect that in a cycle or two, Trump will look like a singularly bizarre event, an oh-my-God particle of derp that shouldn’t be seen as a culmination of a generation of Republican strategy and discourse but rather a strange blip in the national consciousness.

It would be interesting to know what career penalties were suffered by backers of Goldwater, and see if that’s a path that current Republican office-holders think they can follow. Evaluated callously, it might not be a bad strategy.

The Goldwater wing of the GOP eventually took over. It seems likely to me that the Trump wing of the GOP will also eventually take over.

This is a safe bet because there no significant opposition to Trump within the ranks of GOP leadership, and there is little chance of Trump losing by enough of a margin to discredit Trumpism.

Right now, ambitious RWNJs are studying how Trump won the GOP primary in 2016 and are planning to duplicate that in future contests.

This is likely to be a winning or at least highly effective strategy, since the GOP base prefers the blatant bigotry of Trump or an imitator to the dog-whistle bigotry offered by the GOP establishment.

I think you may be right. This cycle demonstrated that much of the Repubican base really doesn’t give a shit about tax breaks for the top 1% or whatever else Paul Ryan et al have been peddling. They don’t read The National Review or the op ed page of The Wall Street Journal. They are convinced that if a person with brown skin has something, then it must have been taken from a white person. Except the post Goldwater era was one still heavily dominated at the national level by white voters. That’s why Nixon and Reagan were able to deploy the Southern Strategy to electoral success. I think the key point is that Trump openly gives encouragement for the haters and bigots in the GOP to indulge in their vileness.

Imagine a bigot who has lived much of his or her adult life in a world where such things aren’t acceptable in public. Even Republicans resorted to dog-whistle appeals instead of overt white supremacism. The Bell Curve was too long and wonky to satisfy the base.

The usual #1 on lists of all time worst presidents is James Buchanan, mainly for dithering around in a totally useless way as the Civil War became inevitable.

Trump would easily beat that record. In Trump’s first 100 days, he could probably manage to start Civil War II and World War III.

During Nixon’s second term, there was, if I understand my history correct, talk of a constitutional convention that rose above the standard navel gazing lint farming we typically see. The basic idea, from what I gathered, was that the presidency was a failed endeavor and we should look to a prime minister set up.

If Trump somehow managed to be elected president, I would not be surprised to see calls for a convention. Nor would I be surprised to see the Union fail as a result. Trump being the last POTUS is actually a fairly conceivable outcome of this election.

Yes, there is an evil inversion of civil rights progress in Trumpism. The heavy yoke of not being able to treat other members of society as subhuman is the oppression angry white Trumpists live under.

It’s going to be fun watching them come to grips with the fact that this was their last chance and they completely 100% blew it, when I’m not busy dodging gunfire.

Trump continued, “I would go and just walk in and just stand in the back of the room on occasion, just to see how they were doing.” But “it’s been so many years,” he added, that he said he wouldn’t be able to identify any of the live events instructors.

Trump was then given a list of names, but he said some of the names sounded familiar, but it was “too many years ago.” After that, the interviewer asked him if he could recognize any of the instructors’ faces and Trump said, “No. No, I don’t.”

He has the best memory. The best memory. Believe me. The best.

I hate to let Spence know Barack Obama is and has been president for 8 years and voted in by a majority of American voters and currently enjoys some of the highest poll numbers seen in years for a sitting president at the end of his term when people usually have less to like.

This is what scares me. We’ve a political base that’s effectively post-truth; the only thing that matters is that you “side” is never wrong, and your opponent is guilty of everything.

Now generalize that principle. Apply it to foreign policy, domestic policy, legal proceedings, intelligence gathering.

It’s basically Soviet.

And they will not let go of them.

So they are prime candidates for any charlatan to come along and peddle revanchism/atavism as a kind of policy set for politics.

This is what scares me. We’ve a political base that a effectively post-truth; the only thing that matters is that you “side” is never wrong, and your opponent is guilty of everything.

Now generalize that principle. Apply it to foreign policy, domestic policy, legal proceedings, intelligence gathering.

It’s basically Soviet.

If enough citizens in a democracy buy into this detachment from reality, self-governance becomes impossible.

This is the problem when “news” becomes celebrity marathons, where the real goal is not truth (whatever that may be) but rather ratings.

We’ve talked about this for at least a decade now. Really it started back when Murdoch started Fox News, when he realized there was a contingent of the American population who were being underserved by the NY based, educated, “media”.

I was thinking earlier about Trump saying the election will be rigged and many talking heads saying this is his setup for an excuse. And then some wondered would that be dangerous causing Trump supporters to go nuts?

Also, so many are wondering when the established Republicans are going to tell Trump to take a hike and refuse to endorse him.

So my question…if Trump gets soundly trashed in the election and throws a huge fit and claims it was a rigged vote…will those same weak Republicans be big enough to put their big person pants on and put a stop to Trump claiming a fixed election and finally tell him to shut the fuck up?

If it should get to this point to me it is no longer politics…it is stopping a potentially dangerous situation and holding the country together.

My concern…they will still be too weak to shut him up.

I think I’d go back further, and blame Ted Turner for creating CNN in 1980.

The business model upon which Fox News is built requires news-o-tainment, which is inevitable when you build a 24-hour news network and then realize there ain’t 24 hours worth of news on most days. People become addicted to the clickbait you are forced to sell to keep your doors open.

What I hold to is that the how is separate from the what they think, but the former is a better indicator of who’s going to fuck things up.

So beliefs matter in that they frame all subsequent attributions, and thus are the basis of the episteme…but on the other hand—and I would say this is super important looking at the utter nihilism that US conservatism is jumping into—a person with no core sense of what is validity, only a narcissistic sense of verisimilitude as like-me-ness, will ultimate transform their beliefs whenever confronted with a situation in which a supposedly-rigid “principle” inhibits their immediate gratification needs.

The advent of cable television changed the landscape of America in ways we are still discovering.

After TV was ascendant and newspapers were struggling, cable TV with its super-abundance of choices really marked the turning point for the fall of local news traditions (newspapers, even local radio.)

That time also coincided when shock-jocks started to dominate the radio and real news on radio started to diminish. Once music had transitioned to FM, AM radio became the talk-radio wasteland that it is. A casualty of this meant that local AM stations became swept up into conglomerations who pushed the same talk-radio shows and “news” nationally.

I agree. Since at least the Clinton era, a fundamental part of GOP propaganda has been denying the legitimacy of any Democrat’s election to office. Trump is just dialing that nonsense up to 12.

More mainstream GOPers will still need the votes of the bigot brigade even after Trump (hopefully) flames out. They will do nothing to piss off the troglodytes of the GOP base, like pushing back on a ‘backstab legend’ of a stolen election in 2016.

No, before that - mid-seventies, when the networks made a conscious decision to make news more ‘entertaining’ and ratings-driven. CBS’ Larry Tisch spearheaded the drive to become a ratings winner.

Depends on what Rush (and his newly minted contract) along with Fox have to say.

Probably…but even that says they really have no souls and do not care about this country. There should be no reason to check the political tea leaves. To me telling Trump to shut up about any claims of an illegitimate election is the only correct thing to do.

He immediately set about posting numerous things to my page and warned me in a public comment that if I deleted his comments he would disown me and not speak to me again until our parents die.

I deleted his posts, deleted the post I had up he commented on and then posted to the effect that if my wishes to keep a politics free FB page could not be respected than I shall delete the page entirely.

One thing that is encouraging amidst the events of the last few days is watching the extreme right spend day after day attacking the honor of the military. Having their stochastic terrorism backed, or at least viewed neutrally by, military and law enforcement would make our situation vastly worse than it is or is likely to be.

Oh it happens. I stay away from my oldest brother all caused by Bill Clinton being elected president in 1992 and then putting in place the “don’t ask don’t tell” program. I mentioned that my brother was being really naive since he was in the Air Force back in the early 60s and based on facts there were most likely gay guys in his barracks but too scared to come out due to reaction just like his.

And that set off a tirade that ended up with him saying he would join the Aryan Brotherhood if need be to put a stop to his country going to hell by the hand of “those people” and I got up and walked right out.

I went back later, but I always guided any political talk away because I never wanted to upset him and go through that again.

I am not going to visit him this year because I know he is probably losing it big time because “Obammy” is still in office and another Clinton might be.

What pisses me off is how we have to be so tolerant or their views. But they get to liken us to the KKK. I’ll concede. Most wingnuts get the KKK sucks but I also think they’re too partisan minded to see the KKK as anything but right wing.

I don’t see any reason we have to be tolerant of their views. The only thing we have to decide is if it’s worth the effort. Not the same thing. I argue with my parents, who voted for Obama twice and will vote for Clinton, but some of their views on race are stuck in the 60’s South. Other people, I’ll pretty much just let them go.

There’s an interesting primary going on this evening in Kansas. Voting against the farm bill last year and getting kicked off the Agriculture Committee have made him a lot of enemies in western Kansas.

No opinion on 4K, but my experience with Vizio has not been good, reliability-wise. Also, upconverting from lower resolutions (which a 4K TV would be doing almost all the time) seems to be a particular weakness. Just anecdotal, of course.

From that article:

There will eventually be terrestrial (i.e. free-to-air digital TV) and cable transmission of 8K broadcasts, but that is not coming quite yet, though they have been tested successfully. The end goal is for 8K broadcast tech to be completely mature by 2020, when the Olympics will be in Tokyo. 8K displays should cost less than a house by that point, too.

Right next to that graf:

The only issue I have with Samsung is that they don’t support Dolby Video. Also, I’m coming from a Panasonic 3D Plasma, so I really am used to blacker-than-black. But the LG OLED that does 3D tacks on a cool grand, but it’s screen is glass vs plastic (it weighs more than the non-3D version) and its 3D is passive vs active.

Huelskamp has a 100 percent lifetime rating from the Club.” Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of yellow-bellied sapsuckers.

He kind of has a point there, though its usually the GOP which is arguing that the debt is a calamity and the nation is nearly insolvent. In reality, there is a nearly insatiable desire for US government debt, and since all our debt is denominated in our own fiat currency, the federal government literally can’t run out of money, unless it simply chooses to.

There is no good reason to borrow $10 trillion to give a massive tax cut to billionaires, true. But the federal government could borrow $1 trillion to build infrastructure. The economic growth generated would more than pay for the increased borrowing.

Ugh. Sad to say that your brother is being a complete bigot here. He is also being very cooperative with the terrorists by falling in line with their narrative of a clash between civilizations.

I get that certain kinds of debt are good and have long term benefits, especially as it would result in improved efficiencies and better infrastructure. But Trump doesn’t care/understand any of that. He just throws out figures and thinks snapping his fingers will make it so.

Trump borrows money in order to personally pocket most of it and stiff the creditors. That kind of borrowing won’t help the US.

That is true; Trump has no idea what he’s talking about, so whenever he’s right about something its pure coincidence. Plus if elected he will have no idea how to put his ideas into action.

Though I’ve followed politics for years, I’ve never actually donated to a campaign.

This time, I couldn’t take a pass on the responsibility to take a more active role, not with the possibility of a Trump presidency. I made my first donation to Clinton’s campaign today and will be making more in the future as my budget allows.

Fuck Trump. I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure he doesn’t win this election.

His point is cut off by the fact that it is absolutely irrelevant to the point I made about Trump’s infrastructure plan. He offers no way to pay for any of it all while slashing taxes by $1T a year, the net result is a massive explosion of debt.

He’s going to “make a fund” and “sell bonds” on gofundme I suppose.

re: #326 EPR-radar

I’m more cold blooded than most when it comes to family ties. As a middle-aged gay person, one issue that I had to consider when I came out to my parents was the possibility that my parents would disown me. I thought about it and decided that if that happened, it would be unpleasant but hardly the worst thing in the world.

Fortunately, that didn’t happen, and in fact my parents were very positive about the whole thing.

That really is the scariest thing about coming out to your parents. I spent the whole drive over to their house wondering if I’d ever be allowed back again. You have to be ready to accept that outcome when you do it. It’s a very scary moment.

I lucked out in that my parents accepted the news. Looking back on it now I was probably the only one who didn’t know I was gay before I actually had the nerve to come out.

I read on Politico’s site today that the Koch Bros. brought their orgs in to help Huelskamp hold onto his seat. I am so glad that their efforts failed. I don’t think he should have been elected to Congress in the first place.

And of course if you look at the comments under any Trump related tweet, you find the “cuck” creeps. Note that they think virtue is bad. They’ve stopped pretending to be any kind of reasonable person, and revel in toxicity.
