Even the right wing hard cases Donald Trump recruited to work for him are getting freaked out by his increasingly unhinged ranting, according to CNBC reporter John Harwood:

His views actually put his son in more danger.

Have you tried telling him that that attitude being broadcast from America is one of the things being used to radicalize?

A few months ago when Trump was merely the frontrunner, Nate Silver said that on a scale of one to one thousand, the then current scenario was about the 997th worst for the GOP. I believe it has now reached the 1,000th worst scenario, surpassing a zombie apocalypse and the Sweet Meteor O’Death.

lawhawk  Aug 2, 2016 • 7:03:24pm

Campaign staff..suicidal.

Would that happen to include the Trump family, who are deeply involved in every aspect of the campaign at least as according to Trump and his clan.

Or does that exclude the family and therefore mean that the rest of the staff think Trump and his kids are driving them to commit group seppuku.

Trump’s outlandish pronouncements started day one. Every last person who went to work for the campaign knew or had reason to know this is how he’d do things.

They still went to work for him.

Every day became a shitshot of lies, smears, and innuendo that exposed more and more of Trump’s reality-challenged worldview, including a Twitter strategy that would repeatedly and regularly quote white supremacists and racists and anti-Semites.

He did that at least once a week every week since he entered the race. His son also began following some of the same white supremacist tweeters.

No campaign could be this undisciplined, and yet every time you thought it couldn’t get worse, it did.

This is what his campaign staff operated in, and that’s what started on day 1.

The problem is that in a fractured GOP field, they could get away with a lack of policy/planning/precision or discipline, but now that you’re in the general election sprint - all that is critical.

Trump and his staff have no discipline, and he’s not about to get some now.

He wont listen to anyone, and no one has the ability to talk sense to him. His kids mirror him and are just as divorced from reality as he is.

It’s as though he’s created a pocket universe and Trump has taken the GOP/right wing right with him. They continue flacking for him and defending his indefensible ideas/statements. While there are a few who are rebuffing him on the latest scandal over Capt. Khan’s family statement at the DNC and Trump’s awful/despicable response ever since, the GOP continues standing by their choice.

The GOP seemed to assure themselves for months that the whole “Trump Acting Loony” act would dissipate once he won the nomination. He’d pivot to the center, he’d surround himself with experienced folks, and he’d start taking the race seriously. Well, here we are, months since he won the nomination, less than a week since the convention, and Trump’s still as crazy as ever.

Um…

Question

What happens to a U.S. presidential candidate if he/she dies after their respective political party grants them the nomination, and before they are elected? Are there bylaws set up by each individual party that provide procedures for this? Also, is there a historical precedent in U.S. history where this may have happened in the past?

Answer

No presidential candidate of a major party has ever died or withdrawn before a presidential election and no President-elect has ever died or withdrawn after winning the general election, but before taking office.

I’m starting to see reports that the rest of the Republican establishment is trying to figure out how to distance itself from Trump, in the hope they can save down-ticket positions.

But that’s not how people tend to vote. They come out in the presidential year because it’s the “Big Race.” In part, it shows how much Americans misunderstand the structure of government, but it’s going to be hard to convince most of the Republican voters to show up even if they’re not going to vote for Trump.

Most interesting. For example:

Ms. Whitman, who said she would remain a Republican, brings with her a considerable network of contributors, some of whom she said were open to giving to Mrs. Clinton. She said she was willing to campaign for Mrs. Clinton, said she would do her best to gather checks for her campaign and indicated she would personally give to both Mrs. Clinton and her affiliated “super PACs.” An aide to Ms. Whitman said she would personally give at least an amount in the “mid-six figures” to the Clinton effort.

It’s a cross between the party and the states. A party can put whoever it wants on the ballot, up to a point. The states can set requirements, and a number of them have deadlines. You could see a number of states with Trump on the ballot even if the final candidate was Pence.

The point I was trying to make is that they will have to be convinced to show up. If they get there, yes, I expect most of them to vote for Trump. But his campaign dumpster fire will cause a lot of people to say it’s not worth it.

The 1-5% in my guess is intended to account for Republicans that stay home. It’s the only relevant category, since only a tiny fraction would actually vote for Hillary.

That’s 1-5% more Republicans than would usually stay home, so I think Trump will depress R turnout, but that the effect will be small. I’d be very happy to be wrong, of course.

Question

What happens to a U.S. presidential candidate if he/she dies is criminally indicted for a major felony after their respective political party grants them the nomination, and before they are elected? Are there bylaws set up by each individual party that provide procedures for this? Also, is there a historical precedent in U.S. history where this may have happened in the past?

We then discussed his Dad, who played Saxophone with Glenn Miller and others and his dissipated life as a jazz musician, and his uncle (my great-uncle) Earle, and his even less reputable life.

re: #2 Scottishdragon

Sometimes you just have to walk away. It’s hard, but I did it. My mom was the glue that kept the family together. She passed before my dad. Dad lived two years longer than she did, then he passed. After he passed, some of my five brothers went nuts and began demanding their “share” of my parents’ assets, claiming that since I was closest to them, I was withholding sh*t from them. I wasn’t, but they thought I was. They carried on in such awful ways that I had to distance myself from them to preserve my own sanity. I had my own household to run, a kid in college, and problems of my own. I just got tired of them. They did little/nothing for our parents when they got sick and stayed as far away from them as they could get, yet, they were first in line demanding their “share” of their estate. It dawned on me one day that I didn’t have to put up with their mess, so I stopped talking to them. It took more than three years before I re-established contact with them. I’m the only girl in the family, and when they saw I meant business, they slowly began to reach out to me. I love my brothers, but I’m not going to put up with their sh*t beyond a certain point. Save your sanity. That is something only you can do. Never feel like you’re the only one who has to deal with crazy family members. We all do at one time or another. Based on reading your posts, I think this is a time you need to provide a little TLC for yourself. Good luck.

Not so fast. A severance payment made based on a promise of non-disparagement for some period of time has no obvious enforceability issues, although IANAL.

The punishment for disparagement is built into the original contract (i.e., returning the severance payment).

Although none of them will ever admit it, I think one reason Trump’s campaign is so poorly organized is because it’s a family affair. re: #164 EPR-radar

I don’t worry about a normal Democratic “snatch defeat from the jaws of victory” scenario in this election.

If Paul Ryan loses his primary, maybe. Still, as Yogi Berra is fond of saying, “It isn’t over ‘till it’s over.”

I remember this quote that a reader sent Sully, and it seems apropos-t went something along this line: “Debbie Wasserman Schultz lost her job, but saved her party. Reince Preibus saved his job, but lost his party.”

Let’s just hope the Neoliberals don’t screw things up even worse than they did last time.

One of the leaders of the Freedom Suicide Caucus, Tim Huelskamp, appears to be going out the door in his reelection bid.

Exactly. When McCain allegedly denounced Trump yesterday, he said that Trump doesn’t represent the GOP. He does, he really does, and McCain knows it.

This is a Twitter fishing expedition on Hannity’s part. If Trump loses in November, Hannity can just claim that the election was rigged. Of course, he won’t wait until then to repeat the lie over and over again. Trump’s got the ball rolling, and it’s his supporters’ job to keep repeating the claim until they’ve internalized it.

Douthat shouldn’t be saying a d*mn thing. I recall that for the last seven plus years, he’s been a staunch GOP supporter—-everything the president did was wrong and was a freedom-killer, and everything the GOPers in Congress did was patriotic, good, and preserved our freedoms. He knew he was lying, but he did it anyway. The truth is that he helped to build this mess and doesn’t seem to realize that it’s too late to run away from his handiwork now.

Um…

My guess would be that the electors would vote for the running mate as president (I’m not entirely sure there is any legal penalty for electors not voting for the person they’re supposed to vote for since it happens every couple of cycles). Or alternatively the Vice President elect would be sworn in as president under a liberal reading of the 25th Amendment.

“I don’t think Vice and BuzzFeed are legitimate news organizations,” Zucker said, reportedly cracking a “mischievous” smile. “They are native advertising shops. We crush both of them. They are not even in our same class.”

Despite Zucker’s dismissal of his digital competitors, CNN has repeatedly relied on BuzzFeed’s original reporting in its own broadcasts and write-ups.

And Trump doesn’t give a shit whether Rinsed Pubis or anyone else in the GOP establishment isn’t happy, because, to this point, Trump has been able to dictate terms to them and the red-meat base loves him for it.

And that isn’t changing any time soon.

I think the best campaign strategy the Democrats can choose right now is, “Please proceed, Donald.”

She sailed away
On a sunny summer day,
On the back of a crocodile.

“You see,” said she,
“He’s as tame as he can be,
I’ll ride him down the Nile.”

Well, the croc winked his eye
As she waved them all goodbye,
Wearing a happy smile.

At the end of the ride,
The lady was inside,
And the smile
Was on the crocodile!

There once was a lady in Niger
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger
At the end of the ride
She wound up inside
And the smile on the face of the tiger

Indeed. The GOP is like Marley’s ghost from A Christmas Carol, completely bound by chains of malice, bigotry, stupidity and hatred that they spent decades forging, link by link.

No way do they get to push a reset button and pretend it all never happened.

The good news from Kansas: It might be too early to make this call - but it appears that enough moderates have won to tip the balance against Brownback and cronies. They will band together with the democrats ( in Kansas the Democrats are like California farm country Republicans,) to reverse the disastrous direction he put this state in.

Priebus has no good options. The GOP base is full of those just like Trump.

The responsible thing for senior Republicans to do would be to admit that the GOP has become a black hole that has accumulated everything shitty in US politics and resign en masse to mitigate the damage as best as possible going forward.

Well, she still supposedly defended her late boss at the RNC, Lee Atwater, as late at 2008, so not really.

Matalin appears in the 2008 award-winning documentary on Lee Atwater, Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story. Speaking about Lee, she says, “They had to kill the messenger because they couldn’t kill the message. They had to turn him into the Boogie Man. Satan incarnate.”[citation needed]

In a very serious and legitimate way, the party is Trump and the lumpenproletariat. The GOP hates its elected officials.

This is very weird, and it should be repeated. The people hate their alleged representatives, nearly to a man. It’s only been relatively clever wielding of the levers of party power that they’ve been able to keep the train from derailing for as long as they have.

It’s not that Ryan or McConnell are weak leaders, though they probably are. It’s that they lead a constituency of about five hundred people. What are you supposed to do with that?

It’s as though he’s created a pocket universe and Trump has taken the GOP/right wing right with him. They continue flacking for him and defending his indefensible ideas/statements. While there are a few who are rebuffing him on the latest scandal over Capt. Khan’s family statement at the DNC and Trump’s awful/despicable response ever since, the GOP continues standing by their choice.

The campaign is about establishing the Trump brand. At that, he has succeeded admirably. Trump is now as well known world-wide as Coca-Cola, Disney, Levi’s, Microsoft or Apple.

As long as the people on his staff understand what they are working to accomplish, they will be fine.
