It is so easy to yank Trump’s chain. He is so darned predictable. It’s like candy from a baby.

I’m a little skeptical about this report that Donald Trump asked an adviser, “Why can’t we use nuclear weapons?”

Not because it’s difficult to believe Trump would say something like this, but because the report comes from Joe Scarborough, who I don’t trust to give me the time of day.

The flip side though, is why would Scarborough “report” that? Hasn’t he been effectively pro-Trump up until now?

Trump said just about the same thing in an interview with Chris Matthews a couple of months ago.

We have to be careful about confirmation bias of course. At the same time, Trump has already confirmed he favors a first use policy for nukes in tactical warfare against targets who do not possess WMD.

I think Scarborough told the truth on this.

Waiting to hear if the spouse got into that rally. Will give you a second hand report if he did. Really wanted to go myself, but Mom’s not doing well, I couldn’t leave her for that long.

I’ll be interested to hear if anything is said about my particular issue, the plans to help family caregivers. It’s a huge concern for the Boomers now and will be for their kids for a couple of decades to come. I don’t know if I’ve heard any other candidate even talk about it.

Five times during a sit-down interview with The Washington Post Tuesday, Donald Trump suddenly interrupted the conversation to talk about whatever was playing on TV at the moment.

As Philip Rucker and the GOP candidate sat down for an interview at Trump National Golf Club, a television tuned to Fox News was playing in background. Trump evidently watched it closely for the entire 50-minute interview, commentating on Fox’s programming with regularity even when it meant derailing the topic at hand:

On the other hand, the opposite makes even less sense. What about Donald Trump makes us think he has an intuitive, nuanced understanding of why we have terrifically powerful weapons which we agree, even with our enemies, must never be used?

I frankly never thought about it, but I would be surprised if Trump could cogently answer the question “why don’t we just nuke ISIS”.

It also dovetails so nicely with his “We’ll defeat ISIS so fast your head will spin” rhetoric, his I ALONE CAN craziness, his “we make terrible deals” craziness. He absolutely would nuke Fallujah if left to his own devices! I have zero doubt of this.

Serious question, if Trump either withdraws or just otherwise becomes incapable of campaigning, is there any reason why the Republican party can’t just abandon the Presidential race?

At this point they’d almost certainly be doing better in both Congressional and Senate races if Trump wasn’t running, and better than if he was ‘replaced’ somehow, which would cause Trump’s supporters to start believing in a Dolchstoßlegende scenario.

Just giving up on the Presidency for this election seems to be a least worst option for Republicans now.

I see some in the previous thread were wondering about The Trump Intervention™ and why it doesn’t seem to have taken which was extremely evident today.

There has been no intervention yet. The interventionists have not assemble yet and been able to rope their animal…err…candidate down to intervene. I think they are trying to get him sometime in the next couple days, maybe over the weekend.

Some seem to think the family may be behind some of the intervention. The Bloomberg goofs on MSNBC just said Both Donny Jr and Eric Trump jumped on a plane heading to the Yukon for a hunting trip.

So, if the family is involved they are either trying to get out of town to avoid the oncoming ego explosion or they do not see any need and are not a part of the whole thinking.

It isn’t going to happen. The RNC has no power or leverage over the candidate now that the convention is over and un-endorsing him gives him even more power to run as a loose cannon and campaign against GOP down ticket candidates.

This is like that line from the film noir classic Double Indemnity:

And it’s not like taking a trolley ride together where they can get off at different stops. They’re stuck with each other and they got to ride all the way to the end of the line and it’s a one-way trip and the last stop is the cemetery.

Here’s why: majorities think Clinton is nevertheless qualified to be president, and has the temperament and knowledge to serve effectively. It’s the opposite for Trump: over half feel he is not qualified, and lacks the temperament or knowledge to lead the country. And his 62 percent dishonesty rating tops hers.

Trump wasn’t as opposed to the media when he was running in the GOP primary as he is now in the GE. All of a sudden since some in the media are actually reporting what he’s saying/doing, he and his supporters are very angry. He’s angry about HRC’s campaign ads and is claiming that although they contain snippets of him saying things in his own voice/words, they’re biased. How is it biased to reveal in a campaign ad the things someone says/does using his/her own words/actions? It’s not, but Trump isn’t accustomed to having those he punches punch back harder.

For those who care or are morbidly fascinated by statistics, the Fox poll increased Hillary’s chance of victory at 538 (polls only) by 2.8%, to 73.2%. The Now-Cast is up by about as much, to 88.6%.

What is this?

It’s complex. I’ve seen a forgotten study that shows the political leanings of personnel vary with rank (low=more D) and time in service (long=more R). That prevailed in enlisted and officers as separate sets (senior sergeants more R than junior officers).
In other words soldiers are like their civilian cohort.

re: #85 MsJ

You start hearing things like “terrified”, “madman”, “unfit to be Commander in Chief”, and increasingly “would create a constitutional crisis with the military”

I heard a couple of months ago that several flag rank officers indicated they would resign their commissions rather than serve under him and have to participate in unconstitutional actions that he said he would order.

Aren’t the Republicans pretty much stuck with Trump? The convention is over and states have deadlines. Ballots have to be printed. Do they even have the option of dropping him now?

This appears to be the relevant section of Louisiana law, as an example.

E. If the nominees for the offices of president and vice president nominated by a national convention of a recognized political party, together with a slate of candidates for the offices of presidential electors to support such nominees, are not properly certified to the secretary of state by the state central committee of that party prior to 4:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday in August of each year in which a presidential election is to be held, the national chairman of the political party, after notifying the chairman of the state central committee of that political party, shall certify a slate of electors to support such nominees by 4:30 p.m. on the first Friday following the third Tuesday in August. Such certificate filed with the secretary of state shall be accompanied by the notarized affidavit of each candidate for elector signifying that the certificate constitutes his acceptance of the nomination.

So it looks like Reince and his friends have until August 19 to certify the slate of electors and any replacement. (It’s actually probably too late already, as Trump is already officially listed on our ballot. Clinton, oddly, is not. Only the GOP and Socialist Workers are officially listed right now.)

The WWII draft took every able-bodied man 18-34. All of them. Even the oldest were still voting into the 1970’s. The Korea and Vietnam drafts didn’t take as many, but they took disproportionately from poor and minority demographics.

It’s only since eliminating the draft (1975) that the military has been majority conservatives.

I really wonder if Reince and the party boys are capable of reading the overall polling that has been going on for over a year and having an overall feeling of reality.

That would be Obama ratings for doing the job going up to 56% and the GOP dominated Congress somewhere in the 10% approval and 71% disapproval range.

They have been beaten in all their stupid investigations, gotten plenty of hell for their obstruction and showed they have terrible candidates when a loser like Trump pummeled 16 of their “best” in the primaries.

Those fools should not be assured of anything, they have zero reason to be confident of anything.

Flag rank means a general or admiral. They actually have a flag with how many stars in rank they are at.

I have been to a dinner where a 2 star general was attending and a blue flag with two stars was in the dining room. You will also see that on any vehicle (like a car) or ship the officer is on. The commanding admiral of a flotilla will literally “have his flag” on the flagship and if he changes to another ship because of damage or some such, he will raise his flag on the new vessel.

Well, a lot of electoral history was weighed in favor of them winning back the White House this go around, particularly that it’s been decades since a two-term Democrat was succeeded by a fellow Democrat. They had better than even odds of winning the presidency back. But that assumed that thinks kept in line with historical trends.

So it’s fair to say that the GOP totally pissed away what could have been a very winnable election on the assumption that they could run Hitler and still win 270 EC votes.

Initial report from the Colorado Clinton rally today — hubby was in the second overflow room, and there were still a lot of very hot people outside who couldn’t make it in at all. He had to park about half a mile away. They were handing out water. Hillary and Hick apparently walked into the second overflow in the middle of a joke Hick was telling — he circled back later to re-tell it to the room because he said otherwise there would have been folks hanging around the Governor’s mansion demanding to hear it.

A school-age child at a Donald Trump rally on Tuesday stood up and yelled “Take the bitch down” after the candidate mentioned Hillary Clinton. His mother later defended the child’s right to speak and blamed his language on “Democratic schools.”

Hard to imagine what might have happened if I had done such a thing in front of my mother, even just before she passed 2 years ago.

California mayor denies being negligent after stolen gun used to kill boy, 13

Besides the callousness of his response, something doesn’t smell right about the mayor’s story:

The mayor of Stockton, Calif., is pushing back against allegations of negligence after a gun stolen from his home was used in the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy, according to reports.

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office stated Friday that one of two guns registered to Mayor Anthony Silva and stolen in separate incidences was identified as the murder weapon in the Feb. 23, 2015, fatal shooting of Rayshawn Harris, CBS News reported.

Prosecutors said Silva failed to immediately report the 40-caliber semi-automatic pistol as stolen from his unoccupied home. On March 22, 2015, Silva reported the gun missing — 27 days after the teen was shot while standing in his driveway.

Silva, who is running for re-election, told FOX40 “it’s just silly” for people to present him as a negligent gun owner, insisting he stores his trigger-locked weapons in a closet and out of the reach of his young son.

“Most gun owners, unless you’re sleeping with your weapon at nighttime or unless you’re a public safety officer, chances are you’re not checking your gun every single day,” Silva said in the Monday interview, admitting he didn’t check on his weapons daily.

I do in fact check my guns daily, since I usually take one with me when I am working on the ranch, and I check them all against a written list and log them in and out every time I open the bolted-down safe where they are stored.

Time to start dinner. Then for the important decision. Shall I do something “constructive” tonight like I did last night? (Genealogical rant follows, feel free to skip.)

I spent the whole evening trying to track down the Smith line of my ancestors. Yes. Smiths. In Ohio in the mid to late 1800s. My great grandmother appears from the mists to marry my great grandfather in Cleveland. The family bible says she was born in 1860. This would be her and her husband’s bible, so I’m thinking they knew when she was born and what her name was. I also have a bible inscribed to her father on his graduation-with a good chain of custody, and all, so I know what his name was.
The marriage license has great grandfather’s name, her name and the attestation that they are both of age, not currently married and live in Cleveland. And the date and signature of the officiant. They could have thrown in something I didn’t already know. Thanks, Cleveland.
I’m going to have to cast my census net a little bit farther, I think. But Smiths.

re: #20 Danack

Serious question, if Trump either withdraws or just otherwise becomes incapable of campaigning, is there any reason why the Republican party can’t just abandon the Presidential race?

At this point they’d almost certainly be doing better in both Congressional and Senate races if Trump wasn’t running, and better than if he was ‘replaced’ somehow, which would cause Trump’s supporters to start believing in a Dolchstoßlegende scenario.

Just giving up on the Presidency for this election seems to be a least worst option for Republicans now.

As I said in an earlier thread: they can’t. They’ve spent the last six years promising their base that they’d undo every single thing that the markist kenyan usurper appeasing apologizing weak willed “you know” did. The only way they can do that is by winning the presidency. If they give up on the presidency, that means they have to go back to promising the same shit again, for four more years. At some point, their base will realize they’re the marks and won’t show up to the polls.

221
stpaulbear  Aug 3, 2016 • 5:14:00pm

I got a mailer today from Betty McCollum. Apparently she has a primary challenger who’s calls himself an independent, but is very obvious history as a tea party guy who’s all in for Trump (He’s also an incredibly white guy who expresses himself through rapping. I didn’t go looking for examples). Betty is so much of a lock in the general election that I wasn’t even paying attention to the primaries, This mailer from Betty says that we’d better get our asses out to vote in the primary or we may be SOL in November. I didn’t realize.

I’ve never missed a general election (maybe only once since 1972), but I haven’t always gone to the primaries. I guess I’ll be making sure to vote next Tuesday.
