In Which the Stupidest Man on the Internet Pushes the Fake “$400M Ransom Payment” Story

Yet another fake right wing outrage
Wingnuts • Views: 48,008

The whole right wing universe is going nuts again about an absurdly dishonest story first published by the Wall Street Journal, claiming that the Obama administration made a SEKRIT $400 MILLION RANSOM PAYMENT to Iran.

Just two tiny things wrong with this claim:

  1. It wasn't secret.
  2. It wasn't a ransom payment.

It’s true that a $400 million payment was made to Iran, back in January. This money had been held in escrow since 1979; it was originally a payment to the United States by the Shah of Iran for military equipment, but the equipment was never delivered because the Iranian revolution happened. The Iranian government has been trying various legal means to get the money returned ever since, and it was included as part of the new deals made with Iran to prevent them from getting nuclear weapons.

And it was so top secret it was announced to the world by President Obama in a press conference and reported in the New York Times on January 17, 2016.

But this hasn’t stopped the Trump campaign from repeating over and over that Hillary Clinton was responsible for giving $400 million in ransom payments to Iran. For example:

No, Clinton did not “start talks” to give Iran this money. It’s been in litigation for 37 years.

And of course, here comes the Stupidest Man on the Internet, Jim Hoft, riding his Derp Stallion to the rescue and sucking up to his hero Donald Trump, hoping for another link that will send massive wingnut traffic to his crappy blog of awfulness.

WOW! Watch Hillary Lie About $400 Million Ransom Paid to Iranian Regime in Euros, Francs (VIDEO)

On Tuesday the Wall Street Journal first reported on the $400 million ransom paid to Iran during the negotiations to free imprisoned Americans.

Nope. It wasn’t a ransom, and it wasn’t paid to free anyone.

On Wednesday Hillary Clinton lied about this latest discovery.

Well, the White House has talked about this and this is kind of old news. It was first reported about seven or eight months ago.”

Of course, that isn’t true.

Of course, it’s absolutely true.

This week was the first time anyone had heard about this secret payoff to the regime.

And by “anyone,” Hoft means himself and his delusional right wing audience, because the rest of the world learned about it in January, when this “secret payoff” was all over the news media.

I’ve seen a lot of fake right wing outrages, but this has to be one of the dumbest yet.

UPDATE at 8/4/16 12:21:56 pm by Charles Johnson

But Hoft wasn’t finished being stupid today! Seconds after publishing this article, LGF readers informed me that he was now posting a picture of the Cleveland Cavaliers Championship Parade and claiming it showed a “MASSIVE LINE” outside Donald Trump’s Maine townhall.

WOW! Look at MASSIVE LINE to Trump’s Town Hall Event in Portland, Maine —VIDEO

You’ll find this image correctly attributed here. A screenshot:

That makes two massive fails in one day for the SMOTI! And unfortunately, that’s not a record. He’s capable of many more fails in any given 24-hour period.

Hoft doubles down within moments of posting the last bit of dumbassery with new dumbassery.

Namely, using the Cleveland Cavs’ championship parade photo as proof of the crowds at a Trump event in Maine:

And his fans don’t care. They love this BS. They love being lied to.

So every wingnut I’ve heard talk about this has insisted to me that it is a “ransom” because…Iran says it is. Thing is, who is it in Iran that is saying it was a “ransom”? The hardliners, the folks who absolutely hate the nuclear deal because they feel that Iran gave away too much and would love nothing better than to scuttle it while humiliating the West at the same time. So yeah, this whole “scandal” is being perpetuated by ideological counterparts on both sides of the divide, who see everything to gain and nothing to lose in getting the nuke deal undone.

I love the imagery, but I’d be sort of careful with the “OOOOOOOH Trumpy hates the Constitution!!!!” meme.

As much as I hate giving the residents of Crazytown a pass, they’re not booing the Constitution; they’re booing the people interrupting their Bier Hall Putsch (yes, I went there.) Also, a pocket Constitution is not a magic talisman that absolves you from interrupting a gathering, regardless of your intent or the mouth breathers attending it.

Brian’s report on O’Keefe’s fraud.

freep.com

I wish I could muster some righteous indignation over this outrage. But the thing is, O’Keefe didn’t get very far.

And as it turns out, he never does.

Still, in a YouTube posting a few hours later, the millennial reprobate boasted that he had come this close to passing himself off as a newspaper columnist who is 1) old enough to be his father and 2) a helluva a lot better looking (or, at the very least, somewhat better-groomed.)

O’Keefe also claimed that a video in which he surreptitiously documented his ruse demonstrated the need for stricter voter identification laws.

Except that he didn’t, and it doesn’t.

Dunning Kruger effect.
They are ignorant and they are also ignorant of how uniformed they actually are.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which relatively unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their ability to be much higher than it really is. Dunning and Kruger attributed this bias to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their own ineptitude and evaluate their own ability accurately.

Woman arrested after inexplicably calling 911 over and over, telling police to ‘go to hell’

The first 911 call came shortly before midnight Monday.

Police found the caller, 54-year-old Deborah Harris, sitting by a bus bench in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Harris couldn’t explain why she’d called 911, according to a police report. But she did curse at the responding officer and tell him to “go to hell,” the report states.

The officer left without further incident, but the calls from Harris didn’t stop: Within the next half-hour, she dialed 911 14 more times, using profanity each time and never once giving a reason for the calls, the report states.

The perp, Deborah Harris. That’s 54 tough years.

As tough as it is, take the high road. He may get a clue and at least try to be civil eventually. My brother and I don’t talk, not because of politics (though he is a wingnut), but because he’s a pathological liar and misogynist assberet. My parents and sister are better, but we had a 10 year time period of not talking at all. Because of religion. I spent time exploring paganism and my Mom lost her shit because I had non Christian books in my house. She wouldn’t visit our home unless I promised to lock all the books and anything that offended her in the trunk of my car first. Um, no, I’m a grown ass woman. Because of that, they missed 10 yrs of their only grandchild’s life and he isn’t close to them because of it. I think they regret that now, but the damage is done and they still cling to some of the crap that caused the problems.

I do that sometimes when I’m putting up things I want to keep my son from seeing (usually gushing about how proud I am of his progress and dealing with being a young, autistic adult. He hates that, but everyone I’m friends with knows he’s on the spectrum). But I have a very small list of friends, only about 60, so it’s easy to manage that.
