Sara Bareilles, “She Used to Be Mine”

Go ahead, call me a sap. But this song from Sara Bareilles’ excellent work on the Waitress musical is really moving. If you listen to it in the right frame of mind, it just might bring a tear to your jaded eye.

The whole album is terrific, by the way, and I highly recommend it.

Sara Bareilles sings “She Used to Be Mine” from WAITRESS the new musical based on the film by Adrienne Shelly which premiered at the A.R.T. at Harvard University on August 2, 2015 and closed September 27, 2015.

Book by Jessie Nelson
Music and Lyrics by Sara Bareilles
Based upon the motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly
Choreographed by Chase Brock
Directed by Diane Paulus

The A.R.T. cast included Jessie Mueller as Jenna, Drew Gehling as Dr. Pomatter, and Joe Tippett as Earl.

Big Brother is all high tech and stuff:

BBC to deploy detection vans to snoop on internet users

All well and good, I suppose, given the BBC is supposed to be supported by its viewers. But the Telegraph writer sez this:

Instead, electrical engineering experts said that the most likely explanation for how the BBC would carry out its surveillance was a technique known as “packet sniffing”, which involves watching traffic passing over a wireless internet network without hacking into the connection or breaking its encryption.

I know that Brit English is different than American English, but I think the word “hacking” is being used here in too narrow a sense. I think what they really mean is that the technique doesn’t insert the BBC between the WiFi origination and the reception. What the BBC is doing is detecting packet size arrangements to see which ones fit their own packets created for iPlayer.

This is the closest I’ve been to a line like this, picture snapped by me in 2007 at Silverton Mountain, CO.

We were the first paying customers to ski this couloir. Our guide was the only snowboarder in the group. It was me and a gal from Chamonix who were the only telemark skiers in the group. That was an intense day of skiing.

A friend of mine was the master at falling wrong. I was following him once as we were coming up over a ridge for a little bit of a jump, and he lost his balance and fell so that his nose landed on the end of his ski pole. I came over the ridge and he was lying there with a bloody face from a broken nose. Another time I was following him and for no apparent reason (probably an ice chunk stuck in place) one of his ski’s stopped and he went head down face first. I gave up on skiing soon after.

OUCH! Broken bones are a huge bummer, more common in the past than now. These days it’s shredded tendons and ligaments in your knee or separated shoulders or broken thumbs (broken thumbs are so common you wouldn’t believe).

I understand if you don’t ski anymore. Broken legs are no bueno, having seen a few friends suffer the same in my day.

Meanwhile, over in Drumpfskind’s Oriental Arch Enemy:

Japan’s Emperor Akihito to make rare public address

Japan’s Emperor Akihito is set to deliver his second ever televised address to the public.

Last month, Japanese media reported that the emperor wanted to step down in coming years, which would be unprecedented in modern Japan.

He is not expected to use the word “abdicate” because he is barred from political involvement.

[…]

There is no legal provision for abdication in Japanese law, which would mean a law change would be required.

Japanese Emperor Akihito in one word

I get a kick more out of the translators than the 4 Japanese respondents.

The last respondent is a schoolboy who evidently doesn’t know the kanji for the last word. He has written “Japan’s かく” but the two syllable word かく(kaku) is a homynym, there are many different words that have that sound. I think the boy means “nucleus”, as in atoms, as one of the words which are pronounced かくmeans pit, as in the pit of a stone fruit, and physics borrowed that word to use for an atomic nucleus. So the it looks to me as if the boy is saying that the Emperor is Japans’ nucleus, as in Japan’s center.

The translator picking “soul” is interesting in this case as the old belief that the Emperor was a demi-god would suggest immortality, as believed by monotheists in the west or by Hindus when it comes to “souls”.

But of course the goal of MacArthur’s Constitution, contra Drumpfskind, was to make the Emperor just a man.

i have been informed that the polls are a sham, president trump is guaranteed, i just dont get it, im living in a fantasyland, i better be careful because the disrespect im showing to a nominee for the presidency of the united states is shameful, hillary is the most corrupt and dishonest person to ever set foot on planet earth (this is called “discussing the issues”) while trump has done nothing worse than defend himself against a vicious attack by those horrible khan people, and, finally, i can apologize now for being so ungrateful to mr trump for saving the country because it’s so certain he will do this it’s practically done already go live in cuba since you love communism so much

The Maryland public school teachers union is shaking its finger at Gov. Larry Hogan for calling its advocates “union thugs” in a Facebook post.

The Maryland State Education Association said on its Twitter feed Saturday: “We should never resort to name-calling.”

The tempest boiled up Friday when Hogan responded to criticism of his recent decision to save, rather than spend some state funds. He wrote that his administration has spent record amounts on education while protecting teacher pensions.

He concluded, “Don’t believe this phony ‘cut’ propaganda from the union thugs.”

Trying to apply US or UK standards to other countries does not work.

Is Angela Merkel really on the ropes?

Germany has accepted over a million refugees, and they have been generally peaceful, but there have been a few attacks perpetrated by refugees - and another by a German of Iranian descent who was “tired of being picked on”

Had anything like that happened in the US, Donald Trump and the Right Wing would really be having a propaganda field day.

Bill and Opus for 2016!  Aug 8, 2016 • 5:00:44am

Another Republican has jumped off the Trump Train and stated he will be voting for Hillary Clinton - and this one carries a bit of political weight.

Reagan Republican: Trump is the emperor with no clothes

Frank Lavin, an official in every GOP administration since Reagan, says he’ll vote for Hillary Clinton

(CNN) I had the honor of serving as Ronald Reagan’s White House political director from 1987 to 1989, so I can claim some insight on U.S. politics. My central conclusion on the 2016 race: It might not be entirely clear that Hillary Clinton deserves to win the presidency, but it is thunderingly clear that Donald Trump deserves to lose.

From this premise, I will do something that I have not done in 40 years of voting: I will vote for the Democratic nominee for president. The depressing truth of the Republican nominee is that Donald Trump talks a great game but he is the emperor who wears no clothes.
[…]
There are many issues on which Hillary Clinton and I are not in agreement. However on the core foreign policy issues our country faces — alliance relationships, security commitments, and international engagement — she comes closer to Republican views than does Trump. And Donald Trump makes me cringe. I am voting for Hillary. And I vote in Ohio.

Veteran Republican strategist Rick Wilson, a Florida-based media consultant and outspoken Trump critic, is expected to be involved in McMullin’s campaign. Sources said Wilson was in Washington on Sunday meeting with members of McMullin’s prospective campaign — which includes some who were involved in a group called Better for America, which has been pushing an independent presidential bid.

McMullin did not immediately respond to requests for comment from BuzzFeed News. He would make for an unlikely presidential candidate. He has never held elective office before and has spent most of his career as a CIA officer, according to his LinkedIn page. Young and unmarried, McMullin received an MBA at Wharton in 2011, and after a stint at Goldman Sachs, went to work as a policy wonk on Capitol Hill.

Who

This is a guy who’s got no ground game, no campaign war chest, and a limited window to even get on the ballot. He’s got even less name recognition than the last guy who the right claimed would stop Trump - Daniel French - let alone any of the former GOP contenders in the primaries who lost because they refused to fight Trump because they needed his supporters’ votes if they had any chance of winning themselves.

They’re all fighting over Trump’s voters, who are a grab bag of bigotry.

One of Thanos’s many pages was about the sheriffs in western states that seem to think the areas they cover are independent of the federal government. It finally hit me: These people think they are like the tribal leaders in the mountain areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan. I suspect those aren’t fun places to get stuck in, especially if you are a minority.

Welcome to the wonderful world of forensic accounting, where you can go your entire career and never witness anything so breathtakingly awful as Trump’s books and records in an audit.

This is a guy whose records are so spotty and was so combative, his lawyers stepped in even before the audit began because the books were that spotty.

This is just one business line. The business wasn’t following GAAP, which sends up red flags, and was clearly hiding information or didn’t hold on to basic records.

And you wonder why Trump’s so reluctant to provide tax returns? It’s because we’ll see lots of issues like this.

Now imagine this guy trying to do budget stuff?

It’s clear he doesn’t have a clue. Which is why today he’s going to tout his business cred by calling for an estate tax repeal, slashing business taxes, and throwing in a child care tax credit, as though that makes up for the trillion dollar nightmare he’s concocted of a tax plan.

Donald Trump is the natural progression of the GOP as currently structured. He is the “Cowboy.” The base, brought up on fairy tales and lies on who stole their future await the next “Cowboy” who can fix it all. Who needs to educate oneself when the GOP and all thier AM Academies and TV Colleges can do the lifting and just give you the answers. That undercurrent was always there, Trump is the promise. The Cowboy. Nice work GOP. Nice work. Now let’s see if you have anything left of that small handful of “compassion” you promised. I doubt it. Here. Hold this cinderblock. Be right back.

lawhawk  Aug 8, 2016 • 6:18:49am

Oh, and another reason Evan McMullin wont stand a chance? He’s got no way to get into the debates unless he gets 15% across 5 polls.

Federal Election Commission (“FEC”) regulations require a debate sponsor to make its candidate selection decisions on the basis of “pre-established, objective” criteria. After a thorough and wide-ranging review of alternative approaches to determining who is invited to participate in the general election debates it will sponsor, the CPD adopted on October 28, 2015 its 2016 Non-Partisan Candidate Selection Criteria. Under the 2016 Criteria, in addition to being Constitutionally eligible, candidates must appear on a sufficient number of state ballots to have a mathematical chance of winning a majority vote in the Electoral College, and have a level of support of at least 15 percent of the national electorate as determined by five selected national public opinion polling organizations, using the average of those organizations’ most recently publicly-reported results at the time of the determination. The polls to be relied upon will be selected based on the quality of the methodology employed, the reputation of the polling organizations and the frequency of the polling conducted. CPD will identify the selected polling organizations well in advance of the time the criteria are applied.

With no name recognition and about a month to go, he’s got as much chance of making the debate as I do.

GOP Ship-jumping, part something…

Former Michigan Gov. William Milliken (R) has announced that he will vote for Hillary Clinton for president, saying that Donald Drumpf does not embody Republican ideals.

“This nation has long prided itself on its abiding commitments to tolerance, civility and equality. We face a critically important choice in this year’s presidential election that will define whether we maintain our commitment to those ideals or embark on a path that has doomed other governments and nations throughout history,” he said in a statement to the Detroit Free Press published Monday. “I am saddened and dismayed that the Republican Party this year has nominated a candidate who has repeatedly demonstrated that he does not embrace those ideals.”

it’s starting to drip drip drip

Clinton’s Fibs vs. Trump’s Huge Lies

a clear differentiation that both sides dont “do it”

these summary quotes are from electoral-vote.com:

[Kristof] puts it thusly: “[T]he idea that they are even in the same league is preposterous. If deception were a sport, Trump would be the Olympic gold medalist; Clinton would be an honorable mention at her local Y.”

“The Washington Post Fact-Checker finds that Trump tells flat-out lies 4.5 times as often as Clinton; Politifact says it’s nine times as often.

“with Clinton, the same handful of lies (email server, gunfire in Bosnia, TPP) are brought up over and over**. With Trump, by contrast, there are bushels of brand-new lies every day. In fact, Politico estimated that Trump was guilty of a misstatement once every 5 minutes; while HuffPo once caught 71 distortions and inaccuracies in a single hour.”

“Clinton embraces your garden variety politician’s blend of mostly truth mixed with a bit of fiction when the truth is uncomfortable, while for Trump lying and exaggeration is a core tenet”

** to be noted - she answers the same questions 1000 times and once uses slightly different words and NEW SCANDAL

trump rapid fires so much distortion that he’s 10 lies/statements down the road while you’re trying to determine whether that 10 lies back statement was even accurate.

“Still, if even just one in 10 gets Zika, the CDC estimates that up to 13 percent of their unborn offspring could develop microcephaly. If just 13,000 babies are born in the U.S. with this disability or to women who migrated here for better medical treatment, the cost of keeping them alive and providing for their lifetime care could range from $13 billion to as much as $130 billion.”

What will happen is these women will be forced into having babies with very severe and maybe even non-survivable health problems and when they need help with care, daycare so they can work to pay the bills, OR if they have no choice but to stay home with them and need help, will be called moochers, takers, lazy, thinking they’re entitled to free stuff and so on.

You know, I was just having this conversation with my brother. His argument is basically that the conservatives are quite wrong when they argue against helping people. He thinks that programs like welfare, food banks, etc come from our past as a more tribal society and makes the correct point that for much of man’s time on this planet, we have been a tribal, communal people rather than this every man for himself. In otherwords, bro is arguing that despite their claims that what liberals want is unnatural and goes against tradition, it’s actually they the conservatives who have created a false modernity. He always surprises me. He’s probably to my left as a whole but most importantly, I know he’s got his heart in the right place when it comes to the little guy and gal.

if i didnt shift a decimal, its estimated at more than $1M per child or much much more.

where’s the cost of this care going to come from really? it’s not all medical and even if it was, what an insurance policy you’d have to have. which still doesnt eliminate copays, annual deductibles, etc etc

plus all the not-directly-medical costs

The most important thing I’ve learned and this is why conservative talk about “I believe in equal opportunity for all” may be sincere but is frankly ignorant, we all start on different playing fields. re: #118 dangerman

I think one million dollars is a conservative (ahem) estimate when you look at the cost of medical treatment in the US. We’re talking a lifetime of care, however long that life lasts. There is no break in care, it’s 24/7/365. And if you’re the caregiver, your life is over too, there is no respite care unless you have MONEY. Being a caregiver is life changing and it’s not all warm and fuzzy and an inspiration for others. Oftentimes those family members doing this lose outside support, friends, family contact, a social life, and doing anything, let alone leaving the house, is often out of the question. One million dollars could be for just one year in some cases.

Last year in Ohio,4 assholes decided it would be a fun idea to throw big rocks off a highway overpass. A woman was severely injured, a traumatic brain injury that she will never come back from. Her husband committed suicide over the weekend.

I was (and to some degree still am) a full time caregiver to an autistic child. For almost a decade I went nowhere without my son, almost lost my marriage (my husband immersed himself in work and riding motorcycles, so, you know, there was some resentment from me, which we’re still working through as a couple), lost my friends and had no family support at ALL. My mother in law thought I was making it up to get attention until she came for a 2 day visit. She keeps her piehole shut now (but still thinks her son married down, yeah, whatever), but I have never been so isolated. I am STILL recovering from that. I gave up a career and college and am now unemployable because what I have done doesn’t count as a real job. So there’s that aspect for all these moms who these assholes expect to be full time caregivers with no pay. Fuck them all with rusty farm implements.

Oh, and another reason Evan McMullin wont stand a chance? He’s got no way to get into the debates unless he gets 15% across 5 polls.

With no name recognition and about a month to go, he’s got as much chance of making the debate as I do.

I might vote for him anyways, since he’s a Republican (that (I) notwithstanding) who is Not Trump.

So, while the right wing continues to rely on feels instead of facts that Trump’s ahead, more polls come out showing Trump is opening up the map. Trump’s losing in historically red country.

One poll isn’t enough, but there’s a trend here - one showing Clinton leads by significant margins in blue states, being ahead in battlegrounds, and even showing strength or leading in traditionally red states.

i agree with your sentiments. i’ve had short bouts at caregiving: injuries and such. and one girlfriend had a stroke at a young age. smoking and birth control pills. we stayed together 8 more months. the beginning was brutal on me - wheelchair and all nearly 100% dependent. her family? crickets. as she got stronger it became a bit easier. i felt and was ready to be in it for the long haul. in the end it was her change in attitude that drove us apart. and a lot of it unrelated to the effects of the stroke.

and as to zika, of course you are right. the psychological dynamics and overall lifestyle issues are real, dramatic, significant, etc.

in focusing on the $, the politician who just callously stated no abortions can address the $, while they can cavalierly wave off all the “other” stuff as personal / not governments problem.

the money has to come from the individuals (savings, earnings (which may dry up immediately), insurance, which means a big industry hit way over the miniscule premiums, government or “charity”.

billions of it in aggregate.

“ok marco, i understand your position is no abortions. where do you see this multiple billions of dollars coming from?”

p.s. i think i read that your son(?) now drives! that’s some achievement! his and yours.

Between the corporate and high income tax cuts, plus this twist, Trump’s showing that his tax plan is all about burden shifting from the rich on to everyone else. They benefit most from his plans, while everyone else, including the national debt get screwed.

The right wing response to all this is wishful thinking about how tax cuts will create new economic growth (ignoring 40 years of trickle down being shown to be objectively BS). Or, when confronted with the debt issue, suddenly claiming that the debt will go away or doesn’t matter - but Obama’s responsible for it anyways (itself ignoring that the debt grew because Bush era tax cuts coupled with off-book war costs are a major driver of the debt to this day.

Throw in the fact that the economy grew massively in the 1950s despite top tax rates of 90% or 1960s when the top rate was 70%, and you had declining debt, and one wonders whether we should increase the tax rates rather than cut them further so as to reduce the debt and/or pay for infrastructure that is badly in need of fixing.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has spent much of his campaign blasting his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for being too close to Wall Street. Yet in a speech focused on economic policy on Monday, Trump will call for a moratorium on all new regulations for the financial industry.

According to Bloomberg News, Trump will say he’ll stop all new financial rules until the economy shows “significant growth,” adding that the country needs “to hit the pause buttons on these regulations so our businesses can reinvest in the economy.”

That was another thing, because he was behind socially in school, he missed a lot of milestones beyond the driving stuff. No dances, no dates or parties, none of that. So he’s playing catch up now. And I also fell behind socially. It was a bit easier when he was younger because I was so busy with him that I didn’t have time to chase after friendships. Desperate #NeverTrump faction is desperate:

Too little, too late. Ballot access is gone in half the country and more states have filing deadlines this week.

I’ve seen people pointing out that the states that still have ballot availability include Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Idaho, i.e., states with heavy Mormon populations. This McMullin guy is from Utah. These are all states where Trump is either losing or barely winning in razor thin margins over Hillary. It sounds like a desperate strategy to get Mormon voters to the polls by giving them an option that isn’t Trump so they’ll still vote in the down-ticket races.

I get that NeverTrump-ers are wanting to stem the bleeding, but they really need to let Trump lose as badly as possible so that the GOP purges the Trumpkins from the party and tries to claw their way back to some semblance of reality. All this does is give the Trump faction a ready-made excuse when Cheeto Jesus inevitably loses in November.

What really frustrates me about GOP economic thinking is that they are willing to embrace a counter-intuitive notion, the laffer curve, and act like it applies universally to all situations even though it is true only in certain very specific circumstances. So yeah, there are instances when lowering tax rates can increase revenues but our current tax situation is not one of those instances.

Then they reject the admittedly counter-intuitive idea that paying higher wages may increase profits down the road. It may not in all circumstances, but when demand for goods is so low because workers have no extra money to spend, increasing wages is likely to have a very beneficial effect on the economy as a whole.

But, of course, the goal is never to improve the economy as a whole. The goal is to shift ever more money and power to the wealthy. The laffer curve is just a fig leaf of an excuse to lower taxes on the rich.

I will say this about Hillary. Her website’s policy section has a couple of catagories about autism and people with disabilities. No other candidate has even bothered to mention it except Yam Boy’s spewing about autism being caused by vaccines on Twitter.

I did notice that about her. It’s what I meant in the primaries when I felt that Clinton was more inclusive than Sanders. I mean I like Sanders idea to make education more affordable for all, do not get me wrong but there’s so much more than just that. I have a BA yet I struggle to find work that matches my degree and skillset and a lot of it because of how I think I’m being viewed on the spectrum. I mean I don’t tell every employer that I nterview with what I have but most people know there’s something off about me. It doesn’t matter how hard I try to hide it with weak attempts to being able to do small talk. I am who I am. I’m hopng a President Clinton would expaind a lot of the stuff Obama’s started on the federal government and persons with disabilities.

True cost of Zika

“Still, if even just one in 10 gets Zika, the CDC estimates that up to 13 percent of their unborn offspring could develop microcephaly. If just 13,000 babies are born in the U.S. with this disability or to women who migrated here for better medical treatment, the cost of keeping them alive and providing for their lifetime care could range from $13 billion to as much as $130 billion.”

The problem with the conservative mindset on economics is simple. Their idea is if you give the wealthy tax cuts, they will spend it in the economy. That’s just not true. However, and this is a good case for middle class and poor tax cuts, they will spend it. Ours is a consumer driven economy. This is also part of the general case for better wages too. The problem is the conservative view of the economy comes from a time when wealth disparity wasn’t as high as it is now and furthermore what these conservatives won’t admit is that their policies are what has created these disparities and furthermore don’t see it as a problem. I’m not against people being rich. I am however firmly against the rich getting richer while the other classes have less growth. A government that invests in its citizenry in the end is a good government. We should want our citizens to be well educated, healthy, and able to travel on safe and modern roads.

marco, if no abortions, and with these costs being astronomical and way out of reach of most/all families, exactly how do you propose the children be taken care of when they are born? where are these parents going to instantly gain the skills and expertise and financial ability needed to provide this care?

Evidence over the last couple of decades shows that decreasing taxes decreases revenue and depresses the economy; increasing taxes increases revenue and helps the economy. And the benefit to the lowest income people would be significantly more than another billion for the top 1%.

I agree with you overall but would like to add that it is important to distinguish between the 1% and the .01%.

From an economic perspective, the most dramatic wealth gap is between middling millionaires, who have seen only modest gains, and the booming billionaires, who now seem to defy economic gravity. It’s between the guy making $300,000, who still feels poor, and the man who made $37 million a day for a year. Both are lumped together by politicians, the media and even economists as “the rich” or “the 1 percent,” who are gaining at the expense of everyone else.

But a new study by a top economist gives us the clearest picture to date of the wealth gap among the wealthy. Emmanuel Saez, an economics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who is a leading expert on top incomes, and Gabriel Zucman, assistant professor at the London School of Economics and a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley, found that the top 1 percent is really two groups.

So yeah, the guy making 300 grand does not face the same challenges as the working poor, but is still in a totally different league from billionaires who are in a position to buy politicians, control legislation and really stick it to everyone. Conflating these two groups contributes to the lack of push back our society can direct at the immensely wealthy.

Exactly——-they don’t pay any attention to the actual details of the laffer curve argument; they simply exploit the sound bite tidbit about “lower taxes increasing revenues” so they can justify lowering our current tax rates. upstate NY is a disaster and it’s all Hillary’s fault.

I was born and raised in upstate NY and the problems there started long before Bill Clinton was president. Hell the problems started in the 80’s when leather mills and other factories started shutting down. They were the life blood of that area. Even the plant my dad worked at shut down several years ago. Now you have to travel a pretty sizable distance (50 miles plus) to get to any major city for employment (that’s from the area I lived in). It’s not Hillary’s fault that’s for damn sure.

I’m thinking of a little bit of Socratic dialog from Xenophon’s Memorabilia.

Antiphon: A plain proof, to my mind, that if you thought your society worth anything, you would ask for it not less than its equivalent in gold. Hence the conclusion to which I have come, as already stated: good and upright you may be, since you do not cheat people from pure selfishness; but wise you cannot be, since your knowledge is not worth a cent.

Socrates: Antiphon, it is a tenet which we cling to that beauty and wisdom have this in common, that there is a fair way and a foul way in which to dispose of them. The vendor of beauty purchases an evil name, but supposing the same person has discerned a soul of beauty in his lover and makes that man his friend, we regard his choice as sensible. So is it with wisdom; he who sells it for money to the first bidder we name a sophist, as though one should say a man who prostitutes his wisdom.

Think tanks are the modern sophists, prostitutes of wisdom.

The Emperor Strikes Back: Japan’s Monarch Takes On Imperialist Abe

Monday’s speech left little doubt his desire and intent is to step down, if such a thing can be arranged, but more importantly it marks the prelude to what may be an epic battle between the emperor’s successor, Crown Prince Naruhito, and the man some critics call the Clown Prince—Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

The emperor played his ace card - he can talk to the entire nation anytime he wants and they will listen. Abe and his ilk are throwbacks, like Drumpfskind (but with a whole lot more sophistication), and while the emperor holds little formal power, he seems intent to not slip away quietly as the object of a cult.

Donald Trump’s New Childcare Plan Would Only Help The Rich

In his economic policy speech on Monday, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is expected to announce a new policy: allowing families to fully deduct the cost of their childcare expenses from their taxes.

snip

Meanwhile, if childcare expenses are fully deductible with no cap at all, the more a family spends on child care the more it benefits. “For folks who are in the upper earning bracket, who have a higher tax rate to begin with, and who are paying more money to have child care options like au pairs for example, those people are likely to receive large cost savings,” said Sarah Jane Glynn, director of women’s economic policy at the Center for American Progress. “Whereas a single working mom who makes around the minimum wage is going to get nothing out of this.”

Since my boys are so into wildlife, I’ll put them over at Interior, where they can endanger a few species. Rudy, Newt and Chris can fight over the scraps.

“My temperament is so perfect for this job. The greatest temperament in the history of temperaments because you go through pressure and you have to be able to handle pressure. The brouhaha over whether I was a nut job was so unfair. It got so big that Dr. Phil and Dr. Drew were both on TV analyzing my so-called narcissistic personality disorder.

“They said this happens when megalomania and a sense of omnipotence, which are normal in childhood, are carried over into adulthood. They said the symptoms are an excessive need for admiration, a lack of empathy for others’ feelings, an obsession with achieving power and success, and the desire to take advantage of people around you.

“Does that even sound remotely like me? Not a chance. Sounds more like Bill Clinton and Ted Cruz.

3 brackets, which depending on where the brackets are drawn, could mean tax hikes for all but the wealthiest.

Mind you the GOP keeps claiming that the tax code needs to be simplified and they think that the tax brackets are the problem.

It isn’t.

Figuring out the tax based on the brackets is actually the most straight forward computation. It’s all the other credits, deductions, addbacks, and other adjustments like the AMT that add complexity.

If you want simplification, you can state that anyone making over $5 million has to pay 40% tax on all income (including capital gains). That’s a easier computation than having to do both the regular computation, the AMT and then figuring out the separate rates on capital gains/losses, plus figuring out all the other phase-outs for various other credits or deductions.

Moreover, the rationale for cutting taxes doesn’t make sense when your big issue is reducing debt. It wont grow the economy enough to make sense, and Trump’s last plan was a massive debt bomb. This is likely to do a similar amount of damage.

I’m going to go on a limb and say it adds about $6 trillion to the debt over 10 years (versus the $10-12 trillion over 10 years like his prior one). All this does is fudge the numbers around the fringes, while assuming that economic growth is several times the historical averages.

Everyone would be seeing a tax increase. Currently, the first $9,275 a single individual makes is taxed at 10%. If he gets rid of the 10% bracket and puts that same amount in the 12% bracket, that would be a tax increase of $185.50.

(Remember that individual tax rates are marginal rates.)

That’s correct.

Looking at Japan’s history, it seems that the Emperor has never really been much more than a figurehead for hundreds of years.

The strongest Emperor in relatively recent terms (since, say 1750), the Meiji Emperor, ended up having less power than the oligarchs who ended up with power. The Meiji Constitution was in theory, a democratic document. But it didn’t quite work out in reality.

Trump’s latest iteration of a tax plan can’t be scored unless and until you know what the brackets are, and how the various components of the plan are figured. He hasn’t figured any of that, probably because all they did was throw together a bunch of numbers and figure no one will dig deeper to ask what they represent, where the brackets are drawn, and what that means to the revenue generated.

We can’t tell if the top bracket hits at a lower dollar level than the current top bracket, and then you get this nonsensical gibberish about the child care credit/deduction/something vague. As he spoke about it, it would seem to help only those with high incomes, like his daughter. It wouldn’t help someone on minimum wage, since they’d be limited in what they could deduct. That helps precisely the wrong folks.

Throw in the estate tax repeal and regulation freeze/rollback.

Rinse and repeat.

It’s an ill conceived tax plan that does nothing but burden shift from the rich to everyone else.

LOL! Outlawing and/or restricting remittances is a non-starter. The banks and financial services sectors make a shit ton of money from that. They’re not going to stand for anything that interferes with that.

Remember, all of this is happening during peak political donation season, anybody thinking of giving to Trump and the GOP is looking at this and wondering if it would be better to just light their money on fire.

Another factor, Trump still has almost no visible organization on the ground in most of the States he needs to win. He never developed a real GOTV effort. So even if he’s saving up money for later he came into this with a huge deficit and hasn’t been making timely investments in the things that might be able to help him. Hillary has reserved ad time early, while it was cheap. If / when Trump starts spending cash to play catch up his money isn’t going to go nearly as far, he’ll be paying rush and last minute peak rates for everything.

this assumes polling actually exists
