Video: White-Haired Man Shocked by Trump’s “2nd Amendment” Comment, Still Tries to Excuse It

The mind of a Trump supporter
Politics • Views: 38,609

YouTube

The white-haired man seen gasping behind Donald Trump yesterday when he made his ugly “Second Amendment” comment was interviewed on CNN today. It’s a fascinating look into the mindset of a Trump supporter, because even though he clearly understood what Trump was suggesting, he insists to CNN’s Brooke Baldwin that Trump was “joking,” and his comment was “misconstrued by the media.”

His only real problem with what Trump said is that he shouldn’t have said it in public, but maybe “out in the shed,” after drinking some “moonshine.”

This is the irrationality of the Trump voting base, in a nutshell.

We can only hope that this guy represents a minority of the voting electorate in November and beyond.

Repeating from downstairs but basically he was trying to look like he was bothered by what Trump said but without saying it was an asinine thing to say. In short, typical Republican voter who wants to have it both ways.

That’s pretty much it. I think all kinds of petty and offensive stuff in my head sometimes but I’m smart enough to keep it there.

They find a way. And what they support makes you want to bitch slap them. On disability. Everyone else is faking. Have Social Security. It’s bad because it’s going to go broke and raise the debt. Actually receive a pension, but no one else should because “state workers and federal employees are lazy and have too much.” Healthcare? Well if they are not on either, and they have a job with benefits, WTF do they have to pay for someone else? Why should they? Until they lose the job and suddenly find themselves in a state that didn’t expand the ACA, and part of the reason is they vote against themselves. “I don’t like Trump, I liked Ted Cruz. He had some good ideas. But Hillary, (shakes head) and the Supreme Court, well…”

Not around here. There are people like that, but they keep it in the closet, I think because we are the second poorest county in the second poorest state. The last guy I spoke with who is an out-of-the-closet Republican (had to come out, because he’s on a ballot) apologized for it.

The dissonance we see in the American social landscape - mostly (but not uniquely) among those many label “wingnuts” but I prefer “the hate right” - where claims don’t appear to align with what most of us call “facts” is frustrating but I continue to believe this arises out of an unwillingness/inability of some people to accept the 21st century.

Here’s a story which provides an example of the 21st century:

Hospital stops gene from being inherited

A 31-year-old woman suffering from a hereditary kidney disease made history last week when she gave birth to a completely healthy baby girl, Changzheng Hospital announced yesterday.

It was made possible by a new genetic technology that prevents the disease from being passed on to the next generation.

[…]

To help ARPKD patients have healthy children, the hospital launched a reimplantation genetic diagnosis program, which involves carrying out genetic testing on the embryo before it is implanted.

Doctors took six embryos from Shen, identified one that was normal and implanted it.

[…]

Which means the doctors destroyed, or will destroy, the other 5 embryos.

Some people in this country would want to charge those doctors for murder. There are politicians in US states who would very much like to pass laws along these lines. A non-trivial fraction of the American population want to label those embryos as “people”.

So the 21st century causes existential angst for these people.

The inability, or unwillingness, to accept reality is hardly special - we can all suffer from it. Yet I do think we are seeing en masse too large a fraction of the American population rejecting the reality, and that is why they are doing political cosplay with the likes of Drumpfskind.

Plenty of them in Ohio. And they can be downright mean out in public. I don’t know why, maybe it is the FOX News factor, but they can be pissed of so easily and it doesn’t seem to take much to set them off. Not even politics is needed.

It is almost like a sense of entitlement because they see themselves as wise and experienced so everyone else is wrong.

I’ve seen them get nasty with service people in stores, restaurants and the like…and don’t get into it about anything related to driving…even if they can’t drive.

I think there’ll be a special place in hell for Roger Ailes. He and Fox News did more than anyone else to encourage the wholesale disconnection from observable reality for millions of Americans. All the effort we’re having to spend trying to keep the US part of the 21st Century, fighting against people who want to live in their version of the 1950s, is because of them.

I really can’t say it doesn’t affect me. I’m not the most intelligent guy but at least I try to educate myself. The amount of people that get their beliefs from a Fox talking head, Rush, and the Republican Baptist Fundy coo coo clock is amazing. My freaking base player is hooked on Oxy. Tore his back up. I’m not sure if that’s 100% correct. I suspect he’s just hooked, and can’t kick, and I know a few like him. Gets in my ride (because he lost his licence for DWI) and starts off with “Welllll I was watching Hannity last night, and General Petraeus was on and said over 100 thousand were already here..” And all I can say is “Shut the fuck up. I’m not talking politics. Just shut the fuck up.” Then we go down memory lane, and all around the world on the 1/2 hour ride to the closet we rehearse in. And in two weeks we are back with, “Welllll, I was…
Frustrating. Half the time I can’t really say anything because it would be a fight. So i snipe when I can and slog on. “Whatever” “Sure” “Yeah. Right.”

re: #35 KGxvi

Also, from the Flag Code (4 USC 8):

(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

I remember doing that with the Pledge as well. Honestly, it’s just about going through the motions. To me, it’s more about what you do when the flag isn’t waving in front of you. Take that as a sort of spin off the old saying about character being what people do when others aren’t watching.

I honestly forget where I got the idea to put my hand over my heart during the Star Spangled Banner. I think I may do it because my heart always beats more heavily when the music is playing so the emotion gets to me a little I guess. The pledge never really emotionally got to me the same way.

According to local NBC, CBS and ABC evening news shows, there is nothing newsworthy going on in the world aside from a guy climbing a building in midtown Manhattan.

And they’re really concerned about what might be in that backpack. My guess: snacks and sodas. Maybe even a sandwich.

re: #73 Blind Frog Belly White

There was a big stink about Obama back in 2008 standing at attention during the Anthem. It’s all ginned up outrage for morons.

There was another one they made up while he was President about him not saluting and it turned out that Hail to the Chief was playing and according to protocol, the POTUS isnt’s supposed ot salute during that. As I recall as VB explained it, there was another flag facing Obama in that meme. Anyhow as I said, memes are stupid, they’re designed to get outrage out of people without bothering to look up facts. I’ve had to debunk so many memes within seconds that it’s not even funny.

Yeah I think I did because there was also a fauxrage started by Stevie Crowder about the “outrageous” thing she said about America which is that Trump makes her feel uncomfortable to be in her home. Not surprised that was just a bullshit meme. I’m so sick of bullshit memes.

I kind of want to make one of these but say something like: one of them is an admitted drug user, and twice convicted for DUI; the other is the child of a teacher and police officer, guess which one conservatives want to have carry the flag at the Olympics:

That’s the thing about memes and by the USMGC is one of the idiotic confirmation bias sites that my friend gets his memes from. But yeah you could do that. Honestly, there would be no shame with either of them carrying our flag to start the Olympics. I’m proud of Phelps and I’m proud of Muhammad. The stupid thing about memes is they want to present that you can’t do A and B. There was a dumb one, hell it may have been form these same people that complains about Obama wanting us to feed refugees from Syria but not about the homeless veterans. I mean, it’s just baseless crap designed to feed people’s outrage and a lot of otherwise intelligent people post this shit (left and right memes) thinking they’re being insightful but they’re just being asses.

Even though Bush’s daughters did the exact same thing when she was younger. And their own nominee is an admitted adulterer. I still remember when Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol was revealed to be pregnant. Then Senator Obama showed great empathy, he mentioned he too was a child of a teen mom and wished the best. Marquette Poll: Clinton leads Trump

Democrat Hillary Clinton boosted her lead over Republican Donald Trump in Wisconsin, according to Wednesday’s Marquette University Law School Poll.

In the presidential race, Clinton held a 46% to 36% lead over Trump among registered voters. Among likely voters, Clinton’s lead expanded to 52% to 37%.

In July, Clinton led Trump 43% to 37% in a head to head match up among registered voters. Among likely voters, Clinton held a 4-point lead last month.

“A 15-point margin is wow,” said Marquette Poll director Charles Franklin, who sought to put the numbers in perspective.

Drumpfskind sure knows how to pick ‘em:

Donald Trump’s Newest Adviser Once Compared Syrian Refugees to Rattlesnakes

[…]

His tenure as Texas ag commissioner has been a ride worthy of one of his beloved rodeos. Soon after taking office, Miller launched a campaign to make public schools safe spaces for junk food, granting “amnesty” to cupcakes and reversing bans on deep-fat fryers and soda machines. He grabbed headlines for handing plum state jobs to campaign contributors, and for comparing Syrian refugees to rattlesnakes on Facebook and suggesting nuclear bombs should be dropped on Muslim countries. As if taking advice from The Donald himself, Miller declined to apologize for those inflammatory posts, though he did delete them.

re: #121 Patricia Kayden

Have to say that it is fascinating how Americans take their flag and National Anthem so dang seriously. I grew up in Canada and don’t remember any brouhaha over either. But to each his own. It would be lovely if Americans spent time and energy treating each other with kindness regardless of race, religion, color, etc., rather than talking about inanimate objects like flags or songs.

P.S. Ironic how racists are now attacking a Black athlete for not properly reverencing a piece of cloth but are okay with Blacks being gunned down by the police with no consequences.

On my month long trip across central Canada (Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario), I was amazed at the number of Canadian flags in people’s yards and in front of businesses. It was almost as if I was in a different country. /s

Wasn’t there a recent brouhaha over changing one word in O Canada to be more inclusive?

It should come as no mystery that the know-nothing party wants to be sure Americans know nothing:

The Republican War on Public Universities

[…]

North Carolina was the first state to establish a state university. Things have been a little different since Republicans took over the state legislature in 2010, for the first time since Reconstruction. After $700 million in cuts during the recession, the system was cut another $63 million this year, despite a state budget surplus. Jenna Robinson of the John William Pope Center for Higher Education, which is funded by state GOP moneyman Art Pope, argued that such cuts would force universities to “eliminate wasteful and inefficient spending on campus.”

Jay Schalin, the center’s policy director, told The Nation that the universities’ problem isn’t money. “The main problem,” he said, “has to do with the ideas that are being discussed and promoted,” namely “multiculturalism, collectivism, left-wing post-modernism.” The concerns are similar to model legislation from the American Legislative Executive Council calling on state legislatures to establish philosophical “diversity” standards, overseeing what public university professors teach.

[…]

It’s really not about money.

It’s about trying to stop the future from taking over from the past.

Right.”

See, this is what I don’t quite get. Unless by “fight” you mean a real physical fight, or unless the guy is some lifelong friend. He doesn’t mind at all slopping his shit all over you. Why not come back at him hard? “Oh, you mean the Petraeus who was screwing the reporter and gave her tons of top secret information and pled guilty to it and had to retire from the service? And are you talking about the same Hannity who’s the dumbest shit on television and hasn’t told the truth since he told his mother he didn’t like the spinach Gerber’s? That’s who you want to talk about today?”

Maybe I’m wrong, but I can’t see what we have to lose by challenging these people to their faces now and then.

I have some friends in the same situation. It’s life. I’ve basically written off a lot of people who I can. Where I can’t I snipe and dismiss. Can I scream at my neighbors who buy that shit? Sure, But what does that get me? It’s not confrontational. It’s low key, but we disagree. To push it further would damage what I am attempting to do and that is to live with them. I can’t cut off my nose to spite my face. And with that, I saw my first neighborhood Trump sign. Store bought. Official. And it’s a retired ex State Trooper. “And we have a WINNAH!” And you thought bumper stickers didn’t influence people.

Also, I think Rudy! is, in retrospect, overestimating his chances vs. Hillary Clinton in 2000: admittedly, he might have done somewhat better than the sad-sack the NY GOP eventually tapped to run against her, but then, that was a fairly low bar to hurdle. Factors he seems to have forgotten were:
1. By 2000, Rudy had mostly worn out his goodwill in NYC (mainly by being an in-your-face asshole 24/7: New Yorkers may claim to appreciate that type of personality, but usually don’t put up with it in their public officials for very long).
2. NY went very Dem in that election.
3. He didn’t, IIRC, have the good relations with the NY GOP that would have let him on the ballot in the first place.

Meanwhile, the misogynistic media can’t stop doing idiotic stuff.

Because this is the most impressive thing about Kaite Ledecky? Not the fact that she obliterated the field in an Olympic finals against the best swimmers in the world in the course of setting a world record, and then won another gold against the fastest short distance swimmer in the world? Or that she’s on pace to get a gold in the 800, which is the longest distance in women’s swimming at the Olympics?

Or that she’s undefeated in international competitions? All time.

Heck, even Michael Phelps knows she’s boss right now. And he’s the most decorated swimmer of all time. She’s doing some stuff Phelps never did.

Jonathan Merritt, who normally writes for Religion News Service, has an article at the Atlantic’s website today calling out evangelicals who have endorsed Trump.

theatlantic.com

I posted a comment about these endorsements last week, in particular, one by a guy named Wayne Grudem, who is a prominent theologian among Evangelicals (which is not saying much, IMHO). Grudem basically said it was a moral imperative for Christians to vote for Trump.

Also, the lying liar David Barton (he wrote a book called The Jefferson Lies that was so chock-full of awful untruths that his publisher yanked it) said yesterday that if you didn’t vote for Trump, you were going to have to explain yourself to God.

patheos.com

ETA an article by a young woman named Amy Gannett who says that this politicking is going to turn off Evangelical young people in a big way: amygannett.com

Three years ago, I ran into Barton in the DFW airport. I really, really wanted to tell him off then, but I was on the company dime and had to restrain myself. But I still wish I’d given him a piece of my mind.

The anthem at games wasn’t always a thing, it only came along with a war, either WWI or WWII. Until after 9/11 the seventh-inning stretch was for “Take Me out to the Ballgame.” Now either “America the Beautiful” or “God Bless America” is mandatory almost everywhere. All military are heroes. So are all cops. Just fuck it.

7th inning—Sweet Caroline—Fenway Park. It doesn’t get any better!

I’m with you being sick of the bullshit “patriotic” crap and hero worship and God Blessing America.

Be good and kind to other people and you’ll be my hero—I’ll even sing you a song…during the seventh inning stretch…(or not)
