New York Times: Secret Ledger in Ukraine Lists Cash for Donald Trump’s Campaign Chief

Corruption
Politics • Views: 58,374

The New York Times has been investigating Donald Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort, and just look what they’ve turned up: Secret Ledger in Ukraine Lists Cash for Donald Trump’s Campaign Chief.

Government investigators examining secret records have found his name, as well as companies he sought business with, as they try to untangle a corrupt network they say was used to loot Ukrainian assets and influence elections during the administration of Mr. Manafort’s main client, former President Viktor F. Yanukovych.

Handwritten ledgers show $12.7 million in undisclosed cash payments designated for Mr. Manafort from Mr. Yanukovych’s pro-Russian political party from 2007 to 2012, according to Ukraine’s newly formed National Anti-Corruption Bureau. Investigators assert that the disbursements were part of an illegal off-the-books system whose recipients also included election officials.

In addition, criminal prosecutors are investigating a group of offshore shell companies that helped members of Mr. Yanukovych’s inner circle finance their lavish lifestyles, including a palatial presidential residence with a private zoo, golf course and tennis court. Among the hundreds of murky transactions these companies engaged in was an $18 million deal to sell Ukrainian cable television assets to a partnership put together by Mr. Manafort and a Russian oligarch, Oleg Deripaska, a close ally of President Vladimir V. Putin.

And look who just tweeted a link to this article — former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. Think there might be some bad blood between these two?

And this may be just the first sign of the dam breaking:

UPDATE at 8/14/16 7:14:33 pm by Charles Johnson

Former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski is still being paid by the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s campaign while simultaneously drawing a salary as a CNN contributor to discuss the candidate on-air, according to the network.

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo and host Don Lemon noted that Lewandowski is “still receiving severance from the Trump campaign” while introducing him in July 11 and July 12 segments

The sad thing is that I’ve had a couple of lengthy arguments with media types about this nonsense.

My question is ‘Why do we give these people any kind of respect when they obviously believe shit that isn’t remotely true?” His answer “Media types are a bunch of snotty elitists and should at least recognize that these people exist”

Manafort had Corey run off and Corey has been after him ever since:

Donald Trump’s former campaign manager said Tuesday that someone should be held accountable for Melania Trump using wording in her address at the Republican National Convention that was lifted from First Lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 convention speech.

Corey Lewandowski suggested on CNN that the person who who must be held accountable, and even resign, is his former foe on Donald Trump’s staff: campaign chair Paul Manafort.

Posted this comment in the about to die previous thread in answer to a post about Usain Bolts’ great runs in the 100m.

I found that winning 400m run by the South African Wayne van Niekerk a pretty big story.

Not only did he flat out run away from everyone for the win, he broke ex-USA great Micheal Johnson’s 20(?) year old record by a few seconds.

Add to it, he runs for a 74 year-old White South African coach and his mother was most likely Olympic material but couldn’t compete due to apartheid rules.

Some where Nelson Mandela has a huge smile. Fuck Apartneid.

There was something posted here yesterday about Corey Lewandowski signing with a speakers bureau talent agency saying he was going to take his behind the scenes take on the road.

I think he knows so much about Trump that in spite of any confidentiality agreement Trump may well be hard pressed to enforce anything due to the embarrassment of it all. And maybe Corey knows what many speculate, Trump is all teeth and no bite with those agreements hoping to bully people form ever saying anything.

Corey must not care. Trump must have really screwed him over. It may be coming back in kind.

“…It is not clear that Mr. Manafort’s work in Ukraine ended with his work with Mr. Trump’s campaign. A communications aide for Mr. Lyovochkin, who financed Mr. Manafort’s work, declined to say whether he was still on retainer or how much he had been paid.

Mr. Manafort has not registered as a lobbyist representing Ukraine, which would require disclosing his earnings, though at least one company he subcontracted, the public relations firm Edelman, did in 2008. It received a retainer of $35,000 a month to promote Mr. Yanukovych’s efforts as prime minister “toward making Ukraine a more democratic country.”

Trump picked the wrong VP in Pence-he should have selected Hope Solo:

Hope Solo is not one to take defeat with dignity.

The controversial goalkeeper went on a bitter rant against the Sweden Women’s soccer team after a devastating at the Rio Olympics Friday meant that U.S. is eliminated from the competition and the Swedes are advancing.

After playing to a 1-1 stalemate over 120 minutes of the quarter-final match, Sweden edged the U.S. 4-3 in the shootout — and Solo did not take it well.

Also Read: Maksim Chmerkovskiy Rips Former ‘DWTS’ Partner Hope Solo: She’s a ‘Sh-ty Person’

“I thought that we played a courageous game,” Solo said after the match, which marked the first time the USWNT has failed to make the finals. “I thought that we had many opportunities on goal. I think we showed a lot of heart. We came back from a goal down; I’m very proud of this team.

“I also think we played a bunch of cowards. But, you know, the best team did not win today; I strongly, firmly believe that. I think you saw America’s heart. You saw us give everything that we had today. Unfortunately the better team didn’t win,” she continued, according to Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl.

“Sweden dropped off,” Solo claimed, referencing their coach Pia Sundhage. “They didn’t want to open play. They didn’t want to pass the ball. They didn’t want to play great soccer.”

“I don’t think they’re going to make it far in the tournament. I think it was very cowardly. But they won, and we’re going home.”

The point being that we belittle it as adults, but it represents something serious to both groups. Maybe not the same thing, but that’s a matter of perspective. A six year old’s world is much smaller than ours.

Though, to tell you the truth, none of my kids received stars or anything other than a grade.

to overstate the obvious, it’s a “shooting” if a gun is fired.

and personally, due to the potential permanent and devastating damage possibilities, the *minimum* penalties for careless or reckless aiming/brandishing should be exactly the same as for discharging a gun whether an intended target is hit or not

jail, fines, civil suits, and loss of future 2a rights

To me, this story is a bombshell, but only for “thinking” people. Trump’s hardcore backers won’t be fazed — they’ve long given up on thinking.

However, I think this adds to the drip-drip-drip of how awful he is, and it will help build up the momentum of those in the squishy middle to forget about even considering casting their vote for him.

Time for bed - but first a selection of insect photos. These were all taken at a patch of mountain mint on a trail by the Schuylkill River.

For scale the bloom heads are about an 1” across.
(Put in a spoiler block for those who are squeamish of insects)

Blue-winged Digger Wasp
Wasp (type unidentified)
Large bumblebee - about 4 different types of bumblebee were there
A smaller bee - probably a solitary of some sort
Great Black Wasp - another digger wasp

The digger wasps are those that generally dig a burrow and then hunt other insects. Any they catch are paralyzed by a sting, taken to the burrow, and then placed there along with a wasp egg.

Right-wing protestors dressed in mock Muslim outfits and chanting anti-Islamic slogans have stormed a church service on Australia’s east coast.

The protestors interrupted a service held at Gosford Anglican Church on the Central Coast of New South Wales state.

For instance, a lobbying firm owned by Rick Davis, the McCain campaign manager, has worked in recent years for a Ukraine politician, Viktor Yanukovich. Both Mr. McCain and the Bush administration supported the opponent of Mr. Yanukovich, who had close ties to Vladimir V. Putin, then the president of Russia and now prime minister.

During this time, however, Mr. Davis’s firm, Davis Manafort, never registered as a lobbyist for Mr. Yanukovich even though Paul Manafort, Mr. Davis’s business partner, had met with the United States ambassador in Kiev on Mr. Yanukovich’s behalf.

‘Back in time 60 years’: America’s most segregated city

MILWAUKEE—On weekday afternoons, Gaulien “Gee” Smith, a prominent Milwaukee barber and businessman, walks out of the Gee’s Clippers shop on North Doctor Martin Luther King Dr., steps into his shiny new limited-edition pickup truck, and begins the 20-minute drive to a parallel universe.

He heads north. Past vacant lots and vacant storefronts. Past the boundary of the city’s north side, where almost all of his customers and almost everybody else is black. He crosses into the suburb of Glendale. The stares begin.

Glendale is home to an Apple Store and a Brooks Brothers and a Swarovski. And white people. A whole lot of white people. Smith, a charismatic 45-year-old black man with a salt-and-pepper goatee, doesn’t need the probing eyes as a reminder.

The white people are why he’s there in the first place.

Smith makes the trip across the invisible race border to pick up two of his sons, one from a private school and one from an elite public school. He chose the schools, in part, for their whiteness.

I tried to not fall into the rabbit hole, really I did. but I read the article which brought up names that led to another article which mentioned names that led to an investigation of money in the Caymens that involved Manafort which provided another name that brought up some familiar names..

However, while Lanny Davis openly acts as Firtash’s public lobbyist, some of his US lawyers have not declared the oligarch as their client. Another influential lawyer, Michael Chertoff, former secretary of homeland security in the second administration of George W. Bush, is a case in point.

Chertoff was recruited as Firtash’s defence lawyer by Paul Manafort, an American political consultant who had spent over ten years helping the Party of Regions and Viktor Yanukovych stay in power. While working for Yanukovych, Manafort was in frequent contact with his chief of staff Sergei Liovochkin who, in turn, is Firtash’s political and business associate.

This has legs. (edit fixed typos.)

Went through my E-mail. My bro-in-law wrote.

I got him off the Jill Stein drugs he was mainlining in the last couple days. He now says he won’t vote for anyone for President.

I went on the attack in a response on that too. He tried to blame immigration problems for his wife (a former Soviet citizen) on Hillary Clinton’s issues with Russia causing his wife to have trouble. (Gaaaa.)

I pointed out that is why the Democrats want immigration reform. I also noted that Marco Rubio put forth such a plan, and was pilloried by the GOP for being a RINO.

He just hates Clinton, having fallen prey to thirty years of derp against her. I noted I don’t have to like a candidate, I only need to know the candidate is competent. Clinton is not running to be my best friend, she is running for President.

Someone dumped 160 litres of hydrogen peroxide into the pool. While H2O2 is effective at cleaning pools, when mixed with chlorine it neutralises the chlorine, causing algae growth in the pool.

They dumped the entire pool and filled it with the water from the practice pool.

Suspected shooter in Queens slaying of Imam and friend taken into police custody, believed to be an experienced triggerman

A man suspected of gunning down a Queens imam and his friend outside a mosque was taken into custody Sunday night, sources said.

The motive in the horrific Saturday afternoon killings may be an ongoing feud between Muslims and Hispanics, according to sources. They said an NYPD Regional Fugitive Task Force was conducting what turned out to be a “brief surveillance” on the suspect in Queens when he rammed an unmarked cop car and officers nabbed him.

I came to learn over the course of raising four kids that they do not need lavish praise for their accomplishments, just recognition and attention. President GW Bush’s administration warned Senator John McCain in 2008 when he was running for President that Manafort was interfering with US policy on Ukraine. Didn’t stop McCain. I opened my salvo against my brother-in-law (who after Sanders bowed out decided to support Stein, and after I talked him out of that decided he wouldn’t vote).

—-

“But, but, but magic balance fairy! They’re both corrupt!”

As my wife - your sister - put it to a Trump supporter here in town, Trump stands for everything her family fought against (fascism). She views not actively working against Trump as a slap in the face of those in your family that fought against that odious political philosophy.

The American Independent Party (neo-Nazis) nominated Trump and Pence as their candidates. As they have a ballot line in California, that means Trump and Pence will appear twice on the California ballot.

Yes, there is a lot of money in politics. It turns out it takes about a billion dollars to mount a credible presidential campaign (or about $3 per person in the USA, as that billion dollars falls under the fallacy of big scary numbers). But, to do something like overturn Citizens United, you first need to get someone into office (along with supporters) that will do so. That wouldn’t be Trump.

Abdicating voting doesn’t seem to be the way to do that. It does seem to be the way to allow a fascist to take power. As your own sister notes, she finds it a slap in the face of your family’s fight against fascists in WW2 not to actively oppose Trump. You’ll have to take up apethism over the presidential election with your sister.

On the issue of the Clinton Foundation taking donations from foreigners, all of the Clinton Foundation’s expenditures are public, as noted on their IRS Form 990 filed every year. No skulduggery there, except for the fever dreams of conservatives. All those filings are publicly available. Being a public health organisation, conservatives oppose it. As it was started by Bill Clinton, they want to destroy it. Is the Red Cross corrupt because they take foreign donations? How about Doctors without Borders, since they are a foreign charity?

President Reagan’s administration was the most corrupt ever (even worse than Nixon’s), yielding 138 indictments and convictions. After Nixon, GW Bush, and Reagan, why do you suppose the Republicans spend so much time on trying to pin anything on Hillary Clinton? When you tell a lie for thirty years, people will start to believe it (bandwagon fallacy). And as for Bill (who is not running), they impeached him for consensual oral sex (while the Speaker of the House was engaged in adultery). By the way, Monica Lewinsky has endorsed Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton now is being pilloried by Republicans for keeping her marriage together (I thought they were opposed to divorce as the family values party). There is also the endless derp about Mrs. Clinton’s long-time aide Huma Abedin, because she is a Muslim (therefore she must be a terrorist).
dailykos.com
(Goes to Daily Kos with details of every Reagan Administration member indicted or convicted of crimes - long Webpage)

There is an Internet abbreviation used on lefty blogs to describe this phenomenon: IOKIYAR (It’s OK If You’re A Republican)

What are the retired presidents doing?

Jimmy Carter (D) is a peace negotiator for the UN, president of Habitat for Humanity, and the Carter Center is working for education and elimination of Guinea Worm.
George HW Bush (R) is in hiding.
Bill Clinton (D) set up the aforementioned Clinton Foundation for education and healthcare in poor nations.
George W Bush (R) stays at home and paints portraits (badly).

And others?
House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) is thinking up a new “Contract on America” for Donald Trump.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R) is in jail for pederasty.
Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ) is facing Federal indictments for his role in Bridgegate and misuse of Hurricane Sandy relief funds.
Governor Robert Bentley (Ala.) is facing Federal indictments for misuse of Federal funds for the BP clean up.
Governor Rick Snyder (Mich.) is still fending off charges of destroying the Flint water supply and cratering Detroit’s school system. There is an arrest warrant out for his emergency manager Darnell Earley, (who ran both of those), who is believed to be in hiding in Ontario.
Former Governor Ken Cuccinelli (R - Va.) convicted of official corruption by the Feds.
Governor Rick Scott (R-Fla.), convicted of Medicare fraud to the tune of $400 million and still got elected.
Attorney General Pam Bondi (R - Fla.), who took a bribe from Donald Trump to drop twenty-two complaints against Trump University.
Attorney General Ken Paxton (R - Tex.) who is under indictment by the SEC for securities fraud, and took a bribe to drop complaints against Trump University. (As a man, he got a bigger bribe than Pam Bondi.)

In 1964, Senator Barry Goldwater was pilloried by the Democrats and Republicans for his Klan endorsements (see the Johnson advert Confessions of a Republican at YouTube). Today, the GOP is ignoring those for Donald Trump. Imperial Wizard David Duke is running for the US Senate for Louisiana, saying Donald Trump inspired his candidacy (as a Republican).

Oh, those corrupt Democrats like Hillary Clinton are exactly the same. Those terrible people that started a neo-con war with the wrong country (wait that was GW Bush). Outing a CIA agent (Valerie Plame) in violation of the law for political gain (wait, that was Cheney). That ran away from our Marines being blown up by terrorists (wait, that was Ronald Reagan). That embroiled us in a war with a neutral country that got my father killed (wait that was Richard Nixon). I’m going to have to reject the Clinton is a neo-con meme. She in no way compares to Negroponte, Reagan, Nixon, either Bush, Cheney, Kissinger, North, Poindexter, &c.

I want to see the Republicans routed from Congress. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) admitted the Senate is lost to the Republicans. Gerrymandering the House districts can be overcome with a large turnout (gerrymanders spread thin the voter base to gain more districts). Five different states had their Jim Crow voter suppression laws thrown out this week; Florida and North Carolina had their gerrymandered maps thrown out. But, both candidates are corrupt … wait, all that was done by the GOP, not Democrats.

UK may soon have more electric car charging stations than fuel stations:

takepart.com:

There could be more electric vehicle charging stations than gas stations in the United Kingdom by 2020.

That’s the claim made in a new report from Nissan, which found that in four years the number of conventional fuel stations could fall to fewer than 7,870. That’s down from the 8,472 today and a far cry from the 37,539 recorded in 1970. At the same time, the Japanese electric vehicle maker predicts that the 4,100 public charging locations in use today will grow to 7,900 by 2020.

My state is not hopeless: It seems likely that NE-2 (Omaha) will go for Mrs. Clinton. NE-1 may also do so (Lincoln, it is close). However, NE-3 (the rural area of the state) is overwhelmingly in Mr. Trump’s camp at the moment, and the number of votes for Mr. Trump would exceed the statewide vote for Mrs. Clinton (thus giving Mrs. Clinton one electoral vote and Mr. Trump four - or maybe two and three - however, the Republicans can afford to lose no votes, so a split in our electoral votes is a plus).

Mystery solved on the green swimming pool at the Rio Olympics:

Someone dumped 160 litres of hydrogen peroxide into the pool. While H2O2 is effective at cleaning pools, when mixed with chlorine it neutralises the chlorine, causing algae growth in the pool.

They dumped the entire pool and filled it with the water from the practice pool.

So all those blonde girls whose hair turns green after swimming… weren’t born blonde after all? One of the great mysteries of my youth, solved.

I do not know where he was living. In terms of income for US citizens I don’t think it matters.
IRS

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, you must report income from all sources within and outside of the U.S. This is true whether or not you receive a Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement, a Form 1099 (Information Return) or the foreign equivalents.
Additionally, if you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, the rules for filing income, estate and gift tax returns and for paying estimated tax are generally the same whether you are living in the U.S. or abroad.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Not supposed to be nearly as humid and oppressive here as over the weekend, but it’ll still be pretty bad with the heat index.

Still nothing nearly as bad as what LA is going through with the massive amounts of flooding. 2-3 feet of rain over the weekend and widespread historic levels of flooding. Disaster declarations are already in place. It’s going to be a while before the flooding recedes in some spots.

Back closer to home, it looks like the reports of shots fired at JFK last night that forced evacuations of two terminals turned out to be a false alarm. Someone claimed to hear shots, and that got everyone on edge and the PAPD took no chances in evacuating.

The delays/backlogs in and out of JFK have eased, but throw in some storms in the area, and you had a mess last night if you were flying out.

So, what’s Trump’s plan for today? Oh yes, he’ll be providing “details” about an immigration plan, including a test.

One can only wonder if Trump could pass the test he’s proposing. I don’t think he could. He can’t even pass basic politics 101 on how a bill becomes a law.

Oh, and it’s hilarious watching conservatives claim that they opposed Trump, even as the primaries showed Trump garnered nearly 50% of the vote in those districts. Conservatives went for Trump. They own this mess just as surely as anyone.

Interesting. Trump has been oddly Russophilic and claiming he admires Putin’s strength, but that is actually the most benign interpretation of his stands, and thus, with Trump, false.

So let me see if I have the Trump-Manafort-Pierson view correct:

* If a foreign government puts 10 million in a charitable fund at Clinton Foundation, Trump & Lumps says we should assume that Hillary must have done each and every thing that government ever asked - she is bought and paid for and no evidence of sell out is needed;

* Trump’s campaign manager directly receives TEN times an average American’s lifetime earnings - none of it going to anything remotely charitable - but we can take their word of honor that grateful Ukraine invaders and worse in Russia don’t run dirty tricks to help despotic Trump seize power.

Nixon would be impressed, even he never came up with such greasy schemes.

What really interests me is why the voters in these conservative districts, if they’re supposedly so pure tea party conservatism, are so gung-ho about Trump.

I’m sure the nativist, racial angle is part of it. But I’d think these voters would want something more than that. Or not.

Anyone have a tally on states where Evan McMullin has made it on the ballot.

From what I can tell, he’s on exactly one ballot - Colorado. He failed to make it on Nevada.

A top priority, the campaign said, is getting on ballots in 15 states that have ballot-access deadlines on or after Aug. 15.

He’s already missed the deadline in a number of states.

His campaign is seeking to get on ballot in a modest 20-30 states.

Hey, stop laughing. Seriously. Stop laughing. This isn’t funny. He’s serious. Truly.

Heck, Jill Stein is laughing at McMullin (and she’s not on the ballot nationally because her own campaign failed in basic math/organizing).

She could lose Ohio—I assume the same fix is in as in 2004. Just because it didn’t work in 2012 and caused Karl Rove to melt down on camera doesn’t mean it won’t work this time. She’s not going to lose Florida, though.

As an Ohioan, I seriously do not think there will be messing with the vote. One of the Kasich/GOP efforts crashed and burned in the courts, so all the early voting that came about after 2004 and what was in place prior is good to go.

Even in my area of Columbus that was one of the main areas where there were few machines and very long lines have had ample machines in place since then. There are also many people from the Democratic party watching things closely. We had a vote a couple weeks ago and there were way more machines than needed for a one issue mid-summer vote.

I asked the poll workers (African Americans) if there would be this many machines come November. The one guy that was working the machines away from the registration table heard me and said “You better damn believe it!” I think the poll workers in my area are very aware.

If Ohio will have any problem, it will be turnout. But with the rhetoric and insanity of Trump, I suspect the people of color and many women will be out strong. I know the African American women will turn out. Just mention the name Trump and there is immediate reactions. I work with some African American women clients that run varying organizations…so they are in a sense community activists. I know they are turning out the vote.

The Columbus area keeps growing the Latino/Hispanic community too. They will be strong in numbers. I have a feeling the polls do not show it…people are laying low and not responding to them. No trust.

No trust.

Confident Hillary will win Ohio.

Then again, I have a hard time any state in this fine Union would vote for someone as obviously ignorant and erratic as Trump.

The NY Daily News has more on the arrests.

Members of an NYPD Regional Fugitive Task Force were conducting what turned out to be a “brief surveillance” of the suspect in Queens when he rammed an unmarked cop car, sources said. That’s when officers nabbed him.

Investigators were questioning him early Monday and were waiting for a warrant to check his home.

NYC Islamic center vandalized as new anti-Islamophobia announced
Sources pointed to an ongoing feud between Muslims and Hispanics in the neighborhood, saying the shooting may have been payback after a group of Muslims allegedly attacked some Hispanics a few weeks earlier.

Cops have established is that at 1:50 p.m. Saturday, the assassin quickly approached Akonjee and Uddin and shot them both in the head at close range. The double killing came just moments after prayers concluded at the Al-Furqan Jame Mosque.

The killer’s prowess got cops’ attention.

“This guy looks like he has shot a gun before. You don’t walk up behind someone, even from 5 feet, and just get two head shots. How many times you see cops fire 16 times and they hit the guy only twice?” a police source said.

Mind you, Breitbart set out to prove media bias with their own polling, and it confirmed what all the other polls found - that Clinton was ahead by a considerable margin.

Of course, the Breitbart/Gravis poll was a closer margin than the other polls, which I fully expect will determine this week’s talking points in that the media is giving Clinton a 5 point edge, so we need to unskew the polls by the same margin to come to the necessary outcome.

At some point, I even figure Trump will run that line out as proof that the media is against him.

Maybe not directly or provable.

But you will have a hard time explaining that to me. Take it from a LGF member on the scene…some things do not turn up in a Google search, and I don’t know about DKos, but they are not know-it-alls. They never talked to me or my neighbors.

I stood in line from 5:45 to well past 8:00 pm and watched people grow frustrated and walk away in a fairly predominate African American community that had a very large turnout in 2004. In my ward, we had three machines. In the next ward, with way less registered voters there were six.

Do you know how fucking frustrating it is to see 5 machines sit idle while people grew angry and frustrated?

They knew the registration numbers in our area. It is always strong and it grew. But did they place more machines? No! They actually had less. Now you explain to me why that happened to me and to others in Columbus Ohio’s inner city areas.

It was even worse in the Linden area and out on the near west side.

Meanwhile in the more upscale white areas people walked in, registered and walked out. 10 minutes at best.

Do you how I know? I am a white dude who has an old home and part of the white folks (artists and gays) that live in the inner city of Columbus rehabbing the area*. All of my immediate friends live in the better parts of town. They had no problems.

The school I vote in is about 500 feet from me down my street and and around the corner. There were reports about this all in the media. I would like to know more about DKos…because they just may be very wrong. Those lines lasted to after 9:00 pm when polls closed at 7:00 pm. The ‘The Voting Machine Changed My Vote!’ thing goes around every election, because somebody has to lose and some percentage of their supporters can’t accept that. And it leads to the unscrupulous pushing laws that gullible losers think are needed, to prevent something that doesn’t happen, as a cover for throwing hurdles in front of their opponents’ voters.

I think Kos was fine with discussions of Ohio making it much harder to vote in black neighborhoods as a way of suppressing vote, but not okay with CTs about vote-changing machines or ballot box stuffing. The former have a long, unsavory history in American politics and can be addressed. The latter are unproveable and make the accuser sound paranoid. Kos is really down on CTs, whether it’s 9/11 Truthism or this.

Trump has apparently outsourced the attacks on Khizr Khan to his upstate wannabe.

“Allowing himself to be so controlled by Hillary that he would dishonor the memory of his heroic son shows the man’s lack of character and backbone,” Paladino concluded. “I am certain that most Gold Star parents would despise Mr Kahn’s (sic) attempt to politicize his son’s loss.”

Paladino needs to take a goddamn seat. And someone should be calling out Trump for just passing the task of slamming Gold Star parents to a surrogate rather than just cutting it out.

I attended the U of IL Music School lots of decades ago, and attended a concert by John Cage where the stage was empty and silent, and he was on an off-stage mic eating a carrot. Frankly, it didn’t do a thing for me, and was boring as heLL, but some gentleman in the audience stood up and yelled, ‘You, sir, are a charlatan!’

Great moments in music history.

I think William Lewis #336 said probably why Cage did this:

That’s a fun piece to do in concert, especially if the audience doesn’t know the piece. It’s easy to think of it as a joke, but it’s not. It’s a very interesting way to explore peoples expectations and what they do with themselves when those expectations are not met.

It’s the music version of Andy Kaufman.

Trump has apparently outsourced the attacks on Khizr Khan to his upstate wannabe.

Paladino needs to take a goddamn seat. And someone should be calling out Trump for just passing the task of slamming Gold Star parents to a surrogate rather than just cutting it out.

Paladino can go fuck himself. Khan would probably be just another Gold Star parent if Trump’s campaign wasn’t about demonizing Muslim Americans and saying they can’t be patriotic when in fact Mr. Khan’s son did in fact die in combat for this country. Paladino and Trump can both fuck themselves with Paladino’s bat from the 2010 election.

Just remembered a very telling part of my personal Ohio Presidential Vote 2004.

The school I vote in had the machines set up in an auditorium on the stage. I would say the auditorium seats maybe 400. All those seats were filled and people moved from the top to bottom in an orderly fashion. When the seats at the top became open, people in lines outside would move in and gladly take a seat after standing for so long.

Outside the auditorium is a common area that serves as a gym and cafeteria. The lines snaked back and forth probably 5 coils wide and 30 people deed, they grew to go down the main hallways.

About 7:00PM, a group of Democrat poll workers came in with with little red wagons with coolers filled with small water bottles and others with boxes of Nature Valley energy bars for a quick snack. Bless them! That kept some people involved. I give my neighbors credit. They stood strong for the most part. You should have heard the conversations. They were not complimentary of the Ohio Secretary of State or the Republican party/Bush administration.

I didn’t see one goddamn Republican on the fucking scene! Not one.

Later.

Vote Ohio 2016!!! Never forget ‘04.

Funny thing is, you ALWAYS here this from folks whose candidate is losing - “I’ve never been polled, have you?”, or “I never answer the land line if I don’t know the caller”, or “I lie when asked”, and the always assume that everyone on the other side isn’t exactly the same. Then they use this to construct an alternate reality in which their candidate is really winning, and when their candidate loses by the margin the polls predicted, they cry ‘Fraud!’ and point to a series of anecdotes which all turn out to be bullshit.

Quite simply (re: Blackwell), if he’s involved, there’s dirty dealings afoot.

See in particular:
en.wikipedia.org
3.1 Involvement in the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election
3.3 Diebold controversies

He is(was?) also involved with the bogus “True the Vote” group.

Didn’t really pay that much attention to kos back then, so don’t really know what they said, but I know from first-hand accounts that there were shenanigans on election day, and there, plus:

In the days after the election, newspapers nationwide carried accounts of how voters in and around Columbus, the state capital, had to stand in line for hours before casting ballots.

It turns out the Franklin County Board of Elections had reduced the number of voting machines in urban precincts—which held more African American voters and were likely to favor John Kerry—and increased the number of machines in white suburban precincts, which tended to favor the president.

As a result, as many as 15,000 voters in Franklin County left without casting ballots, the Washington Post estimated—a significant amount in an election that Bush won by only 118,775 votes (out of 5.6 million cast). But except for one-day stories in the Washington Post and New York Times, these revelations triggered no broader investigations, or if they did, the results went unpublished.

No kidding. They can’t go a sentence without whining. It’s exactly why I can’t read any NRO article about race or people of color in general because it always starts with a whiny screed about how conservatives are portrayed unfairly. All I can say to Republicans and conservatives is this: Trump is your baby, you created him by choosing to create a narrative the past eight years where the President was more than merely wrong on ideology but an “other” who wanted to destroy our very fabric of our nation. Maybe good for you that you see Trump as a bridge too far but fuck you for constantly refusing to admit responsibility for you and your ideology’s role in what made Trump so appealing to Republican primary voters. And yes Reagan and the two Bushes bare some responsibility as well. So stop whining about how liberals call you bigots and maybe stop acting like bigots. I don’t believe every single last Republican or conservative is a bigot but I sure as hell believe that their party and ideology lends itself easily to bigotry.

Ah yep, that’s pretty much what it is. Trump can’t do the abstractions that Atwater talked about, he just comes out and says the bigotry and that horrifies them. Some of them I think may genuinely be repelled by it but some of them I really think their only issue is they know how bad it makes their brand look and this is the worst part for them, it forces them to consider that we may be right about them and their ideology and that angers them the most of all I think.

Former COO of Trump Plaza weighs in:

Donald Trump was humorless, cold and selfish. He would hurt the little guy if he could see even the slightest gain for himself. He refused to pay his bills, he sued anyone who got in his way. He threatened people like myself for telling the truth.

I am horrified at the prospect of a Trump presidency. I know first-hand that he lacks the intelligence, nor does he have the attention span to process the complexities of running our great country. The vision of him sitting in the War Room during a national crisis should frighten every American. Sitting with the Joint Chiefs, secretary of defense, secretary of state and others, he would be forced to do something he is not capable of doing: listening to others.

In the coming weeks, the Trump campaign is going to try and present a “new” Donald Trump, a more presidential Donald Trump.

There are going to be claims that he now “gets it,” and he will be on message to beat Hillary Clinton. And when he does go off script, they will spin, blaming someone else. There will be constant reassurances from Trump’s surrogates that he understands what it takes to lead the country.

Well, from where I sit, Trump has not changed one bit . He was not capable of running his business without hurting others back then; he is not capable of running our country today without hurting others.

Whatever Trump does, it will be to serve himself. Donald Trump is Donald Trump.

I am sorry to say there is no change coming.

Hosting The Olympics Is A Terrible Investment

….But it could be much worse. The 2014 Winter Games in Sochi blew their budget by 289 percent. The 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid overtopped projections by 324 percent. And the 1976 Games in Montreal ran a staggering 720 percent over projections; the city spent three decades paying down the bill. While outliers such as these distort the average cost overruns somewhat (176 percent for Summer Games, 142 percent for Winter Games), the median cost overrun for all games for which we have data is 90 percent, making Rio’s cost overrun somewhat lower than the historical norm, at least so far….

Charlie Sykes, trying to distance himself from the racist scum he swims with daily.

Conservative Talk Radio Host Admits ‘We’ve Created a Monster’

Talk radio host Charlie Sykes admitted in an interview with Business Insider’s Oliver Darcy that conservative media had “created a monster” in successfully making an entire segment of conservative voters immune to reason and fact-checking.

In an excerpt from an interview with Darcy posted on Twitter Sunday, Sykes discusses how the conservative media had established itself for decades as an antidote to the “mainstream media,” educating generations of viewers to view the major media outlets with suspicion. The result was that there was no longer anyone in a position to fact-check Donald Trump in a way that would reach his base. “We’ve basically eliminated any of the referees, the gatekeepers. There’s nobody,” Sykes said.

“At a certain point you wake up and you realize you have destroyed the credibility of any credible outlet out there,” he added. “And I am feeling, to a certain extent, that we are reaping the whirlwind at that. And I have to look in the mirror and ask myself, ‘To what extent did I contribute?’”

re: #478 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

There’s a lot more to those figures than that. Here’s the actual report, and here’s a link to the Lake Placid economic situation, and how it got funded in the first place (a combination of mostly federal funding, plus a NYS cash infusion, plus NYS setting up the ORDA that has enabled Lake Placid to become a premier training facility for winter athletes ever since). That’s a distinction from other Games, where facilities quickly fall into disuse or disrepair - one shots of expensive construction for a Games that wont bring the claimed economic benefits.

The entire Lake Placid games cost overrun was 324%, but that was a budget of $435 million. Sochi, which had a slightly lower cost overrun had a budget of an eye popping $21.89 billion. Scale clearly had something to do with the costs.

In the initial comment the number of machines was already at the needed level in 2012 but “the fix” was supposedly still “in”. So the fix was not about the number of machines.

Plus context: the Ohio 2004 claims are made, as a rule, about voter fraud.
