Speaking of music, I was watching the Olympics with my brother, who was a professional trumpet and keyboard player and occasional surprisingly good vocalist (surprising at least to me, his big bro) for many years. I said that the Olympic theme must be the most recognizable piece of music on earth. He of course not only knew who wrote it but knew the English trumpet fanfare on which he said it’s based. I replied that I was actually talking about the tympani riff that precedes the trumpets. You know: BUM bum da BUM bum BUM bum da BUM bum.

He gave what I think is the most musicianly evaluation I’ve ever heard: “That just means somethin’s gonna happen.”

Of course, the timeline is all wrong for that claim to be true (even if there were evidence for it), but conservatives will only hear:

The rest is just details (like he didn’t do any such thing)

Wonkette takes apart a comic book that looks a bit like something Jack Chick cranks out, but is by an MRA telling of the evils of women:

wonkette.com

They go frame by frame through the comic book, pondering each frame, such as the guy in the book after being refused for a date by an employee, and being shut down by his company’s HR department (in one day!) instead travelling to Cambodia (notorious for sex tourism with minors) for sexytimes.

Wow, there are some sick puppies in the MRA movement.

I don’t think the NY AG needed any prodding from anyone to investigate Trump U for fraud.

It was a brutal and blatant scam operation preying on the naive, ill-informed, and starry eyed.

Any place else, the “students” would be called “casino gamblers”, but with a much higher up-front entry cost and an almost zero cost of beating the house, because the game was rigged for them to lose.

Oh, shudder! Mine’s a 2011. How did that time go by so fast! I had a hard disc die about 10 years ago, and I lost everything, so this time I have gone with overkill: Time Machine and Carbonite, and Dropbox for current projects. And I still dread the mess if something happens! Knock wood!

The display on my 2005 Compaq laptop went out two years ago; I had to replace the computer. What a pain moving all the files I wanted to keep.

I’ve considered opening an account with such a place as Dropbox, or buying an external drive to back up my files. (I have a flash drive large enough, but they are too easy to lose: I once accidentally laundered my flash drive with all my work files for my publisher on it. I guess that’s one way to clean up the erotic Romances I edit.)

Time Machine is absolutely engaged, as is Dropbox. She Who Must Be Obeyed keeps almost all of her marked music and lead sheets as PDF photo images on her iPad and backs them up through this machine to those vaults. Marked scores are crucial to her doing her music.

The interwebs are a boon for working musicians of any ilk. She does Classical, Andean, Ladino, Brazilian, celtic (Irish, Manx, Scots, and Welsh), and Americana as parts of her repertoire. Oh, and the Beatles.

The problem with the gun is that it is basically useless. Hopeless for home defense. Maybe okay for killing people within 30 feet in a street fight. But what are the chances?

It’s a beautiful gun, though. Nice lines, well made. Clean.

If you want a gun for home defense, get a Winchester Model 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge pump shotgun, load it up with 2-shot shells, and hang it behind your headboard. Just racking a shell will scare the pee out of any intruder and if you fire off a round, you won’t kill your next door neighbor with friendly fire like you could with an AR or AK.

This masturbatory fascination with high cap battle rifles is just insane.

Obama had nothing to do with it. He can’t. Cases against Trump U are civil and must be brought to trial by District/State courts. The Executive has no power impel them to do so.

It’s that separation of powers thing. In the Constitution. Of which Trump seems to have no concept. And neither do his supporters.

re: #48 goddamnedfrank

My shotgun is my home defence weapon. (I live sixteen miles from the sheriff’s office, he has one deputy, and if he is on the other side of the county the only car is forty miles away.)

When I first moved here, the gun shop owner asked me why I would use a .12 gage for self-defence. I pointed out I don’t need to go out of my house armed, and a shotgun is as sporting as a water hose. He laughed at the comparison.

My brother-in-law is continuing to descend into the “anyone but Clinton” camp. It would seem he should know better than some of this stuff, having served in the Navy submarine force. He E-mailed a Gish Gallop I had to break up into sentence fragments to address because it was all one paragraph:
*** ***
I am not sure where to start.

Your sentences prefaced with >>. Are you cutting and pasting from wingnut sites? I’m having to address fractional sentences here. It reads something like a Gish Gallop.

>> It is Obama who is putting token NATO forces in the Baltics as well as some new antimissile batteries right on the Russian border.

The Baltic States applied to join NATO in 2002, during the administration of President George W. Bush (R) - the guy who did everything conservatives blame Obama for (including the messed up response to Hurricane Katrina). No Western nation, nor many Third World nations, ever recognised the forcible conquest of the Baltic States by the Soviet Union in WW2. Upon gaining independence, the joined NATO.

NATO states are obligated to mutual self-defence, and George W Bush first put troops in them. Currently, the Russian Federation has been sabre-rattling against both the Baltics and Poland (which is why Russia put a tank division, several air squadrons, and fifty thousand troops on an exercise in Kaliningrad when my wife and I were in Poland thirty miles away - tell me about putting troops right on the border again?)

>> Antimissile batteries can be rearmed with different missiles in a matter of minutes that are offensive instead of defensive.

No. Anti-missile batteries are designed for specific missiles, just as aircraft are designed for specific radios. An AN/ARC-51 UHF radio will not plug into the slot of an AN/ARC-159 UHF radio. Missiles are much more complicated than radios; I presume by this you also mean that we can switch out a Trident missile in a sub with an AN/AIM-9 Sidewinder missile? We can switch out a Patriot missile with a Minuteman III?

President Ronald Reagan (R) effectively withdrew the United States from the Anti-ballistic Missile Treaty in 1983. Under Ronald Reagan, the notorious “Star Wars Initiative” (a massive taxmoney sink for conservative causes) was pursued, but when Bill Clinton (D) took office, the programme was de-funded.

On 14 June 2002, the United States under President George W. Bush (R) formally withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic missile treaty. The following day, the Russian Federation formally withdrew from the Start II treaty in response. Thanks, Obama and Clinton.

>> I remember how provocative it was when the USSR attempted to put some missiles in Cuba about 54 years ago…damn near destabilized the fragile peace.

Interesting, since you were born in 1968, six years after the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was alive then but don’t remember it (I was only two years old in 1962).

>> How is what we are doing any less destabilizing? How is what we are doing any less provocative?

It is the same thing we have been doing since GW Bush and the Baltic States asked for support under the NATO treaty obligations, but keep up with those “magic balance fairy” and “anyone but Clinton” arguments. Trump appreciates your support.

>> Since the Obama administration has done this, as well as sanctions against Russia,

It is normal for the United States to sanction countries that invade sovereign nations, like Crimea in Ukraine.

>> and has supported the Coup in Ukraine that put a very anti-Russian puppet regime in power there, and since Clinton was part of the Obama administration, how is she not part of the problem?

Because the Euromaiden Revolution in Ukraine to get rid of Victor Yukanovich was self-organised and we had nothing to do with it, but keep up with that “the USA supported it.” We did no such thing, except in the minds of folk like Alex Jones and FOX News Channel who want to blame anything they can on Obama and Clinton (even Hurricane Katrina and the burning of the White House in the 1812 War).

“Puppet Regime?” Are you getting your phrases from North Korea’s news service? And who are they a puppet of, the European Union or the USA? Both? Someone else?

I’ll just leave this here for you to peruse:
worldaffairsjournal.org

>> Whenever the doomsday clock of the Union of concerned scientists clicks closer to midnight, I have to stand up and resist any further movement of that clock towards the doomsday it foreshadows. It is irresponsible to have a prick pulling contest between the two great superpowers.

Except that had nothing to do with the Baltic States. It had to do with climate change (the UCS Website itself has several articles calling out conservatives for their anti-science position) and modernising nuclear weapons stockpiles.

The most recent officially announced setting—three minutes to midnight (23:57)—was made in January 2015 due to “[un]checked climate change, global nuclear weapons modernizations, and outsized nuclear weapons arsenals.” This setting was retained in January 2016.

You know, I am going to have to bail out of this line of discussion. As noted by others, you cannot talk someone out of a position that someone talked themselves into; only that person can do that. I will focus my get out the vote efforts in areas where I am more likely to have an impact, such as Gold Star Families, VFW members, and American Legion members (all of which have condemned Trump’s surrogate’s remarks linking we Gold Star Families to the Muslim Brotherhood and calling us anti-patriots).

What a wierd configuration for locking and loading! I suppose it saves adding an extra barrel, but still…

I will note that the vast majority of Americans live in communities where they don’t have to live in fear of home invasion. The chances of it happening are vanishingly small. My point was that AKs and ARs are absolutely the worst weapons they can utilize if it were to happen.

I don’t store too much ammo in cartridges other than .22lr, which is cheap, easily portable and hypothetically genuinely useful in a survival scenario for harvesting small game like rabbits, which are abundant around here.

Good, I hadn’t heard or seen much of Sanders lately and was growing irritated.

The man who led Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign vowed Monday night during a conference call with DNC officials that Sanders was committed to traveling the country to campaign for Hillary Clinton and down-ballot Democratic candidates.
“This is not going to be an easy task and it’s going to take all of us rowing together,” Jeff Weaver said.

The private conference call - which included top Democratic National Committee officials including chief of staff Brandon Davis and state party leaders - was led by DNC interim Chairwoman Donna Brazile, who had met with Weaver and Sanders’ top campaign adviser Mark Longabaugh earlier in the day. According to DNC officials, the three discussed Sanders’ schedule as well as voter mobilization among former Sanders supporters.

Hopefully he’ll start hitting the campaign trail soon.

I don’t know about that. If I were king of the world, I would limit magazines/clips to eight rounds in all commercial weapons. Any one who possessed a clip/magazine with a larger capacity would incur a ten year vacation in the gray bar motel. Guns don’t kill people, bullets kill people. Limit the number of bullets in a weapon and you can react to an active shooter.

My dad was born in Denver, and we used to go hunting in the high country. My first rifle (I was 14) was a Remington 700 30.06 with a pre-picatinny rail scope mount. It was a solid 800 meter gun, and I took my first elk with it when I was 15.

My dad always said “If you can’t hit it with two shots, you aren’t doing it right.”

I guess that’s how I feel about the whole gun thing. If you can’t hit it with two shots, you probably shouldn’t be allowed to have a gun.

And of course your logical BIL blames it on Obama and Hillary, rather than admitting that Putin did it.

That and missing out on the Baltics joining NATO long before President Obama and Secretary Clinton were in their respective offices.

My wife thinks he might be trolling me because he also wrote this in response to me turning up to eleven FOX News Channel’s claim “Hillary Clinton had a seizure” that came from the fever-swamps of right wing blogs:

Wow… they are amazing… FOX has nobody on staff who can fact check or who can call a consultant to check that what Clinton did does not indicate epilepsy. Anybody with epilepsy or who has ever been around anybody who has had a seizure would know that what Clinton had was a loss of balance which can happen to anybody on some stairs. A seizure is a lot different.. (I have had them too). Sadly it also adds to the discrimination rampant that epileptic people cannot do so many things.. cannot hold office or do most jobs, should loose rights, be sterilized, imprisoned, institutionalized and a lot of other things. I had hoped that FOX might get a little less intolerable after Rupert Murdock stopped running things day to day..

If you offer to pay for sex, you can be arrested and labelled a sex offender for the rest of your born days. Some guys just need a blow job, but do not have the possibility of just going out and paying for one.

Shit like this just kills me. These are people who literally lived through the entire goddamned event, and yet are still somehow capable of retconning their own memories into believing Obama was somehow in charge of the nation’s emergency response to Katrina. I’m not even sure I want to understand how that works, whether it’s deliberate lying in the questionaire or genuine confabulation, because whatever answer comes back will be chilling as fuck.

Human interaction is too nuanced to be covered by one simple set of rules or discussed in one set of memes or comic books. And it is too laden with presuppositions and social biases to be approached by anything but a case-by-case basis.

I own a shotgun, but I am not a fan of “firearms porn” myself. I agree that such photos are puerile (I like that word).

I have a 800 GB external drive that I back up my laptop onto every week or so. Mainly to make sure my photo archives are preserved since they now also have all the scans of my parent’s slide collection.

Those are always good to have - I got a hell of a deal on a 1 Tb external drive a few months back. A local computer shop was going out of business, and they were selling them for the equivalent of $25 so I snapped one up. Brand new, factory sealed.

There are some Russian items, mainly on the gossip sites, all in the style of “look what the western media is saying”.

It’s not like the liberal online media or blogs are shy about discussing Putin’s family and relationships. The Kabayeva rumors were everywhere, Putin’s daughter was outed by the online media. The other daughter’s marriage and her husband were discussed in a political context (the banker who beat up Putin’s SIL thinking he was some random guy has been utterly ruined).

Here - nothing (that does not go back to that article). And such things do leak out in Russia. This plus absence of evidence plus her denials (and the burden of proof is not on her) mean that I can safely assume the story’s fraudulence until proven otherwise.

Apparently for many of the so-called journalists the reverse principle applies.

Meanwhile, in Poland, visions of a lost horde of Nazi gold continue to tantalize treasure-seekers, even if there’s a very strong likelihood that it simply doesn’t exist

Explorers in Poland have resumed searching for a legendary Nazi train laden with treasure and armaments, dissuaded by decades of fruitless searches and a scientific determination that no train is even there.

The new dig that started in southeastern Poland Tuesday attests to the power of a local legend claiming a Nazi “gold” train disappeared in a mountain tunnel as the Germans escaped the advancing Soviet army at the end of World War II.

Two explorers claimed last year to have located the elusive train hidden in a secret tunnel in the town of Walbrzych, sparking the latest gold rush.

A government official initially said he was “99 percent sure” the train was there, but geological experts using magnetic equipment found no train on the spot.

Seems that the Lost Dutchman mine is was probably not even located in the Superstition mountains, the old Dutchman simply went back and forth through the Superstitions to throw off anyone trying to follow him.

Superstition Wilderness area used to be great place to go hiking and picnicking, just outside of the Phoenix metropolitan area, but now it is overrun with idiots out popping off firearms and no longer safe or pleasant.

Those lost-treasure stories are found in a lot of folk traditions. In the mountains of KY/WV, its Jonathan Swift’s silver mine. When I was doing archaeological surveys there, it generated enough suspicion about my comings and goings to crimp the information flow from the old folks.

Yes as would any other sane and intelligent person. I am talking about the public discussion..as soon as it spins off into a discussion of what he/she said/meant, it is a net gain for DT, as it distracts from the fact that he is totally unqualified for the office, both in terms of experience or personality.

And that should be the main message.

I’m a big believer in ‘If you’re explaining, you’re losing.’

Trump’s campaign carries the stench of abject incompetence to anyone who’s not a full on cult member. Pierson can laugh off her mistakes all she wants, but she makes them in public. That impression is really taking hold, especially after Rudy’s stupidity yesterday, and it will eventually strangle that campaign altogether.

This is all apparent to anyone with half a brain, even to the leaders and members of the still-mentally-functioning wing of the GOP.

And it is clear to most of the networks, but their job is to sell advertising time, and Trump foundering and stumbling over his own utterances makes for good ratings. It is even clear to CNN and Fox, but they do not want to risk losing viewership by stating the obvious, namely that Hillary is the only reasonable candidate being presented to us this election.

When you spend the better part of the decade blaming Obama for everything, everything becomes Obama’s fault. Like the awful federal response to hurricane Katrina in the Gulf States. The GOP doesn’t care about setting the record straight, so they encourage the BS claims that Obama handled the response poorly.

Rinse and repeat. We see it time and again. The GOP doesn’t care about facts or history, only reasserting itself in the WH and they’ve chosen Trump to be their guy this time.

Rubio admits that Trump’s a con man, but supports him nonetheless. That makes Rubio as much of a con man as Trump, since his dispute isn’t over substantive policy, but on style.

Trump’s policies are a grab bag of GOP standards - trickle down economics, tax cuts for the rich and burden shifting to everyone else, and cutting regs so that companies can pollute more all in the name of “economic growth.” They’re also for repealing Obamacare, and substituting it with vaporware, and repealing the estate tax, because giving the 0.1% of taxpayers a massive handout with tax breaks is exactly what will drive the economy into the next gear.

Trump’s policies would create massive amounts of debt that the GOP suddenly doesn’t care about, but Clinton’s tax plan that would actually reduce the debt over a 10 year policy is a massive tax hike (though it’s focused on the same people Trump wants to give massive tax breaks).

By historical measures, the US is taxed less than ever, and the debt burden is the result. We’re carrying more debt as a result and we’re investing less in new infrastructure as a result.

Trump’s sole idea that has some merit is the infrastructure plan, but he doesn’t offer up a way to pay for any of it, especially when coupled with the massive tax breaks (and this is the only real departure from GOP orthodoxy).

Trump’s immigration plan is a mess of nativism/xenophobia and it’s all but assured that he couldn’t pass the test himself.

This is the GOP. Trump’s just the funhouse mirror reflection the GOP craved.

“Plans”. Not plans. He doesn’t exactly have a plan for any of what he claims he’d do. He can’t even identify how to implement any of this stuff. He just figured it’ll happen of its own accord.

And his business record, which is supposedly the thing that makes him superior to everyone else, is a sham. Far from being a self-made man, he inherited his fortune, and benefited from multiple bankruptcies to extricate himself from business deals that he negotiated. He’s so highly leveraged that it’s a house of cards that would collapse on its own weight if you look at it the wrong way, and right now, everyone’s starting to look more intently given what Trump’s trying to do.

Trump can only engage in DARVO at this point to hide the fact that he’s up to his eyeballs in weird relations to Russia, Putin, and that his businesses are so highly leveraged with foreign debt. That’s why he’s trying to claim Clinton’s the one with the ties to Putin. Etc.

At a generous best imo, appearances, and raw assumptions of ill intent. So the Saudis being rich and in geopolitical networks deeply (gasp like the Clintons) give some serious money. Then when HRC came to some other than wholly negative policy about the Saudis as Sec State it was because of the donation to the Clinton foundation. More examples along the same involving other countries etc.

Supposedly it’s a slush fund that allows the Clintons to get rich and curry favor with foreign countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, etc.

At one point, one of the charity watchdogs refused to score the foundation because it was an unusual setup for a nonprofit entity, but has since gotten enough information to score it - and it scored well.

All of the foundation’s tax return information is available and is more transparent than any of Trump’s entity dealings. But then again, a brick wall is more transparent than a Trump entity (and more stable too).

“That is the kind of coverage that CNN offers in this presidential race as they literally kiss Hillary Clinton’s ass and Obama’s ass every day,” he said.

Whoever wins this election, a real nightmare will come true.

If Trump wins, the nightmare will be ours. If Clinton wins, theirs.

The deal is, the worst of the conservative nightmare won’t even come true. They won’t be rounded up and jailed for being christians, or white, or male. They may lose the right to own assault weapons, but the government isn’t going to come and take their guns. We’re not going to be overrun by raping, thieving hordes.

So much of the conservative nightmare is just extreme paranoia. It’s not based on anything that will really happen when Hillary becomes president.

On the other hand, even conservative policy wonks know what a complete fuck up Trump will be for foreign and domestic policy. It’s not just a liberal nightmare.

‘Mandates’ aren’t real, but majorities are—and Clinton wants one in Congress:

You know what would really undermine Hillary Clinton? A Republican majority in Congress.

The notion that presidential candidates can earn a “mandate” is a hoary concept premised on the absurd idea that if everyone agrees that a particular contender’s victory can be attributed to a particular message, lawmakers on Capitol Hill will cower before the occupant of the Oval Office and do her bidding, lest they provoke the wrath of the same voters who provided this mandate in the first place. But do you really think Republicans give a damn how Clinton wins?

Of course not, and that’s why Clinton is trying to take advantage of Trump’s unique toxicity to run up the score as never before. Clinton doesn’t need to do this—after all, a win that puts her in the White House is still a win. But there’s a very good reason why she’s doing it: The bigger her margin at the top of the ticket, the more Democrats she’s likely to sweep into Congress on her coattails.

And that is how you advance a progressive agenda: with Democrats holding power at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Exactly. Go read the whole thing. It’s short and worth it.

Yep, it amazes me how some people imagined that merely electing Bernie President would’ve brought about the change they want. Its the same mentality of wingnuts enraged that the GOP Congress couldn’t force Obamacare repeal down Obama’s throat. That’s not how the US government works. The only way to pass progressive legislation is to get a majority in both the House and the Senate. And since the average House congressional district leans Republican, the only way to get a House majority is to run centrist Democrats in those districts who might hold some apostate views on issues like abortion or gun control.

Exactly. And quite honestly the one thing that really got me about Bernie is he really didn’t seem to understand that. His response to when the GOP would block his legislation is that people would take to the streets in anger and uh Bernie that’s not how it works. It’s on you as President to push Congress to get legislation passed. But exactly, the key is electing enough Democrats who hold our basic philosophy so we can get key legislation passed. Some of them will have disagreements from us on some issues but that’s what a party is. It is much better to have a more moderate minded executive with a more liberal Congress than a more liberal minded with a more conservative Congress. I can’t see Bernie taking the time like Clinton and Kaine have to work to get other Democrats elected throughout the country. It’s honestly why Bernie’s not a great leader like people think he is. That’s the irony of Bernie. It was okay for him to be the right of the national Democratic party on gun control but any Democrats to his right on any other issue and he acted like you couldn’t really be progressive. I don’t think Bernie’s record on guns makes him less progressive. I do however wonder if Clinton had that record that the BB’s would be as generous to a candidate like that. And I guess that’s the thing. Benrie’s been in elected office a while and yet acted very naive. I don’t’ doubt his sincerity but he wasn’t the person to lead the Democratic Party.

My brother (No, not him. The other one) tried to simultaneously argue that Sanders was stronger in polls against the GOP AND that Sanders winning would mean a huge Democratic wave election that would sweep the House and Senate into our column again.

But you can’t argue that he was more likely to win AND that winning would mean a wave.

I personally think it sucks but it’s long part of how it is. And if you really looked at it, Kaine was perhaps as pro labor as a competitive and successful Democrat could in this state. Purists think you just stay pure on the issues and it’s all good.

re: #287 Blind Frog Belly White

My brother (No, not him. The other one) tried to simultaneously argue that Sanders was stronger in polls against the GOP AND that Sanders winning would mean a huge Democratic wave election that would sweep the House and Senate into our column again.

But you can’t argue that he was more likely to win AND that winning would mean a wave.

Honestly we have no idea how Bernie would be doing at all. I have no idea what a convention that nominated Bernie would look like. I have no idea who Bernie would have picked as his VP. And we would be seeing a lot more attacks against Bernie since Bernie’s a virtual unknown. Clinton’s attacks if you can call them that on him were pretty light punches compared to what he would have gotten in a GE.

I’m not trying to beat up Bernie here though. I just feel now as I did then that the man’s not a leader in the sense of the word that you want in your nominee. I can think Bernie has good ideas and a good heart but I can also think that Clinton would be a better leader and President oto. The sad thing is the Busters refused to get that and that’s why some of them are still complaining. Not trying to say every individual who supported Bernie thinks like that because I’ve talked to plentty of people who supported Bernie who know what’s at stake.

I am, admittedly, surprised that my Congressman Rob Wittman passive-aggressively endorsed the “nominee”.

He’s going to be competing in a Republican convention next year for the gubernatorial nomination, and you think convention delegates won’t be angry he didn’t more strongly support Trump? Especially when Trump’s Virginia head, Corey Stewart, is going to be another candidate.

Yep, in a primary Gillespie would win thanks to money, but in a convention I think Stewart has the strongest support. If more candidates will running, Wittman might be able to second-choice his way to the win.

(Second-choice being a made-up term to describe the second-choice for people in a convention. When their preferred candidate is eliminated, they move to their second choice. Wittman managed to get the nomination for the 1st congressional district back in 2007 by being the second-choice of a whole bunch of convention goers despite starting 3rd from the bottom among 9 candidates and ended up winning on the 6th ballot.)

Yeah the primary favors the more normal candidate while a convention is how we got Cuccinneli. The convention would definitely favor Stewart since it would be like it was for Cucci, a convention of like minded voters.

I don’t see Trump as a redneck bubba. The Duck Dynasty guys sell that pretty well (even though they’re not). But Trump strikes me more as a dumb version of the asshole New Yorker. I couldn’t imagine Trump watching NASCAR or yelling “roll Tide” or driving anything, let alone a pick up truck with trucknutz on it. But a fake rolex wearing, cheap suit sporting, bad comb over, loudmouth from the upper east side? Dude, c’mon…

I had the 8-track! Then I saw him do the album live and it was weird not to hear the songs fade out in the middle and then fade back in. :)

8-tracks were fine for Three Dog Night or the Carpenters, but not for prog-rock concept albums

re: #353 whitebeach

The late great San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen summed up a similar travesty: “They take three good things and make one bad thing.” He was talking about so-called Irish coffee.

I recall when we met some German forestry students in the Grand Canyon and invited them back to our place in Flagstaff to party. Iris started rolling a euro-doober, first by building a cardboard filter (we had never seen such a thing) and then pasting three papers together (ditto) and then wanting to mix tobacco in the the grass.

We had to talk her out of that - over her most insistent protestations - as many of us did not smoke tobacco, only weed.

I pointed out that I like coffee, and I like tea, but would never put the two in the same cup.

I think Romney was 1000 times better than Trump. Both lack the self-awareness necessary to be effective politicians in the 21st century, but Romney, for his myriad of problems actually understood policy to some degree. He was often wrong on policy (or at least disingenuous since so many of his policy positions changed between Massachusetts and his run for the White House), but having the wrong policy prescriptions is categorically better than not understanding the issues.

A President Romney would not have been an existential threat to the Union; a President Trump is going to result in a constitutional convention being called.

I don’t know if it’s going to be that close, especially if relying on the under 45 set. I’d wish they broke out the under 45 into 18-25 and 26-35 and 36-45, because we’d probably see that the folks who are least likely to vote for Trump are also least likely to vote.

Far too many people under 35 don’t vote, or think their votes don’t count. The votes count, in every election, no matter what.

Sitting on the sidelines means you’re part of the problem. If you can turn these folks into lifetime voters, that’d go a long way to fighting apathy.

I’m getting so tired of the Right and its constant viewing of the world through shit-colored glasses. “The world is on fire!!”, “Our cities are like war zones!”, “Gun confiscation is coming!”, “Hyperinflation is right around the corner!”

Historically, by now, 70 years after the last time, Europe should have had at least one big shooting war between major powers, with lots of civilian casualties and displacements. We should have had a couple Depressions, too. There are small riots in the occasional city, like Milwaukee this weekend, but nothing to compare to the riots of the 1960s. Violent crime has dropped precipitously since the 1990s. Sure, everything isn’t coming up roses, but for shit’s sake, we’re not on the verge of DOOOMMM!!!!!!

I can’t imagine why that view of things is more seductive than reality, but at least for a big chunk of America, it is, and it’s SO BAD that we need to give up on democracy in favor of a Strong Man who will keep us safe as we huddle behind our walls and try to remake our economy from a modern, information and trade-based economy into a coal-burning, polluting revisit to the 1950s - “We’ll reopen the mines!”.

Donald Trump’s speech on Monday was advertised as an attempt to redirect his campaign from a series of blunders to a more serious discussion of foreign policy, starting with combating global terrorism. As such, it marked another test of his readiness to lead. It did not go well.

Far from coherent analysis of the threat of Islamic extremism and a plausible blueprint for action, the speech was a collection of confused and random thoughts that showed little understanding of the rise of the Islamic State and often conflicted with the historical record.

Meanwhile, with terrorism as his central focus, Mr. Trump doubled down on the anti-refugee themes that have dominated his campaign, dressing them up as a national security issue. He proposed a new “extreme vetting” approach to immigration that would impose an ideological test on newcomers and undermine the very American values of tolerance and equal treatment that he said he wanted to encourage. He also called for the creation of a commission that would “expose the networks in our society that support radicalization,” which struck many listeners as an uncomfortable echo of McCarthyism.

And it just gets better.

Trump reminds me of an athletic prospect who did well when he had inferior competition but is exposed when he gets to the more tougher level. It says a lot about Trump, Clinton, and the other GOP candidates that Trump beat them easily but is struggling with Clinton. Of course the GE electorate is a lot more reasonable than the echo chamber is the GOP primary electorate.

In fact if Romney had been elected President in 2008, I bet he would’ve passed a stimulus package and he would’ve passed some form of Romneycare bearing strong resemblances to Obamacare (which was, of course, based on Romneycare passed in Massachusetts).

They just don’t get why Trump is so toxic. The 2016 Republican Party platform includes a call to transfer “certain” federal lands to states but tribes aren’t mentioned at all.

The omission has at least one tribal leader in California concerned. Steve Stallings, a council member for the Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians, told The Palm Springs Desert Sun that the proposal would hurt Indian interests.

“I don’t think you’ll find any tribe or major tribal organization that would support this,” Stallings, who also serves as chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, told the paper.

Tribes in California and other Western states have documented claims to lands currently managed by federal agencies. But the GOP platform doesn’t say whether Indian Country should have a role in the process.

A few thoughts I had about Trump’s apparent “pivot”/absence from social media/switch to “low-energy” mode.

If he continues along this course — much less active on Twitter, TelePrompTer speeches with less ad-libbing, no more bombast — he’ll start to lose his lunatic base. Rally attendance will drop, or at least people will get bored and leave much earlier. (This assumes that he even continues to have the rallies.) Media coverage might get slightly more positive from some corners (“He’s moderating/pivoting/becoming more presidential!”) but likely overall will result in less media coverage.

If he turns back into the Trumpenstein’s Monster that we’ve all come to know and loathe, he further alienates the somewhat-sane part of the electorate that might consider voting for him, we get back on the Trump Train to Gaffe City, and he pisses off some other portion of the electorate that we didn’t even know he could piss off. Media coverage remains negative and tacks more toward the “Trump death spiral” narrative, with some media outlets still trying to peddle the horserace thing, but mostly failing.

If he continues to vacillate between the two modes, as we’ve seen, he gets the most media coverage (“What will Trump do next?” narrative) but honestly I think it’s the worst of both worlds — which is why I think we’re most likely to see this pattern continue through October unless something really shakes things up.

You’re throwing in a couple of Navy Admirals, whose rankings are a bit different/limited as follows:

The rank of Fleet Admiral has been reserved for war time use only. The last Fleet Admirals were in World War II. Fleet Admirals during that war were Chester W. Nimitz, William D. Leahy, Ernest J. King, and William F. Halsey.

Another Trump pal likely to land a job if the Queens native gets to the White House is Chris Christie. The New Jersey governor may be U.S. attorney general.

Some of the other choices are from the private sector, The Hill said, including former presidential rival and ex-neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who may head the Department of Health and Human Services.

Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence will appear at a campaign event in Indian Country, a first for the rocky campaign of White House hopeful Donald Trump.

Pence is scheduled to speak at a town hall at Sandia Resort and Casino at 3:30pm Mountain time on Tuesday. The facility is owned by Sandia Pueblo and it’s often used for public events due to its close proximity to Albuquerque, the largest city in the state.

The New Mexico Republican Party in fact held its convention there in May. A dust-up over media credentials drew negative press attention to the event before the tribe cleared up the confusion.

Native Americans represent 10.5 percent of the population in New Mexico and 4.6 percent of the population in Albuquerque, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Besides Sandia, several Pueblo tribes and one Navajo Nation community are located near the city.

With its sizable Native and Hispanic populations, the state easily went for President Barack Obama in 2012 and in 2008. The counties that are home to Indian Country all voted overwhelmingly for the Democratic candidate.

Saw earlier today that trump will Have Flynn & Christie attend briefing with him.
Feeling that might suggest Flynn earmarked for National Security Advisor, or maybe even Director o National Intelligence> And, Christie for Secretary of Homeland Security

I think he has Christie in mind for a legal job- AG or USSC. Agree about Flynn though.

I can’t try to guess who Clinton may have in mind for her cabinet. I think Julian Castro and the admiral who was vetted may be possibilities though. No idea who she goes with for state. Obama went with her and Kerry for state. It would be foolish to use how Obama chooses cabinet members as for whom Hillary will pick since she’ll have a different management style.

Also signals that Trump has no understanding of what he’ll hear.

You know how Trump has been trashing Tim Kaine while in Virginia?

Clinton also may benefit from the popularity of her running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine (Va.), a former governor who maintains a favorable-unfavorable image of 54 percent to 37 percent in the state, similar to his standing during his 2012 Senate race. Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, is not nearly as well known, and voters split 37 percent to 34 percent favorable-unfavorable toward him.

Still doesn’t explain why Pence would bother to campaign in NM, of all places. Maybe he’s just trying to get some cuisine he can’t get at the neighborhood Chili’s.

Isn’t Flynn a Russia Today employee?

Can FBI refuse entrance at the door? Flynn might not be a guy you want hearing classified material.

Trump thinks that’s where all the Mexicans live so he’s going there to “engage the Hispanic community”, just like Reince just said.

Remember that little video about The Great Martian War that a lizard posted the other day? Well, I did a web search for it as I wanted to see it again and it turns out that was just a trailer for a pseudo-documentary that the History Channel did a couple of years ago.

I found it rather fun and quite well done. The CGI for ‘footage’ from the war itself was excellent. Done in black and white with the flaws you expect to see in such old film. ‘Interviews with survivors’ supposedly done by television networks a generation and more ago had the same attention to detail. ‘Modern’ footage looked like the sort of thing you would expect in a real documentary with little touches like a Martian ‘Heron’ parked outside the Royal Museum in London.

I thought they mixed real history with this alternate history quite nicely.

However, the ‘twist’ in the story didn’t quite work for me, and that such a thing appeared on The History Channel shows how far that channel has descended. The Great Martian War was more suited for SyFy.
