All the Olympics seem like a waste of time to me.

I didn’t think I’d watch but I have every night. The gymnastics was great and the two team beach volleyball was amazing. I could watch that every day. That’s some serious athletics.

The Ryan Lochte thing is weird. I have no idea what happened to Lochte but my husband was robbed in Lima exactly how Lochte said he was robbed in Rio.

I hope they (Lochte and the three other swimmers) didn’t make that shit up because that would suck. But reading about it, it really seems like the Rio cops are doing some pretty heavy intimidation tactics.

I prefer winter games but I’m finding stuff I like now.

I used to play volleyball so I’m loving this (the gold metal match is on now). And I’ve always liked gymnastics. The rest I can take or leave but I find its our go to channel every night no

I’m waiting for super squad to become an Olympic event

“The Marines started off with a gear inspection, went immediately into a combat fitness test then directly did a 100-question written test which covered basic infantry skills,” said Vasseur. “Afterward, they were issued their operation order for a patrol to conduct daylight patrolling.”

The patrol took place in the Juliet Training Area aboard Camp Pendleton where the Marines and sailors were required to navigate through harsh terrain to locate six checkpoints and call for fire from notional supporting assets such as mortars.

The Marines seemed to never stop moving, coming straight out of the patrol, they shifted into a defensive posture for the next portion of the competition.

“They set into the defense, got attacked and the next day started a timed nine-mile movement to Range 408,” explained Vasseur. “They conducted a live-fire attack and moved into another three-mile movement completing an unknown distance range as a marksmanship test for the last part of the competition.”

Germans took the gold. I really wish the US could have played Germany. The only game they lost at the Olympics was the semi which put them in the bronze game which they won. I was pretty bummed. Those gals are amazing.

Also a former water polo player. It’s weird seeing Acevado and Moses as the old guys on the team. And I don’t recognize any names on the women’s team (there was a time when I knew most of the team and my sister probably should have been on it).

As for the armpit hair, that’s not even top ten of bad things that happen under water. I’ve two or three chipped teeth that can attest to that

You should check out hurling. I watched a couple games while I was in Ireland. It’s a tough game, really fast and those guys are on another level with how tough they are.

Well, I’m Irish and have been to the Old Country several times and seen many a hurling match. Not for the faint hearted. There Will Be Blood. Large quantities of poteen are required for recovery after a game.

My wife the former Libertarian has expressed interest in the organisation Bugles Across America. (The organisation provides buglers and trumpet players to play “Taps” for veterans and active duty at the request of families, due to the shortage of military buglers.)

On expressing that desire, my brother-in-law mailed her his bugle.

Went into town today: someone set up at one of the motels a “Trump gear store” where you can get everything Trump (except a refund from his university). They’ve taken over a third of the parking lot and the closed restaurant attached to the building for the store.

That is in a town of 1,100 people. I really don’t see that as a successful money-raiser for the Trump campaign (though this could be someone grifting off his name, I didn’t check).

Nate Silver has this district (NE3) as the most likely to vote for Mr. Trump.

Two independent sources told euractiv.com that the US has started transferring nuclear weapons stationed in Turkey to Romania, against the background of worsening relations between Washington and Ankara .

According to one of the sources, the transfer has been very challenging in technical and political terms.

This is uncorroborated at the present; please bear that in mind. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is denying it with the following statement:

The Romanian foreign ministry strongly denied the information that the country has become home of US nukes. “In response to your request, Romanian MFA firmly dismisses the information you referred to,” a spokesperson wrote.

So for the time being, this is unconfirmed. But if it is in fact true, than that’s a major development.

Mr. Perkins however, continually rants about how earthquakes and floods and hurricanes and whatnot are because of the “geyh agenda and liberal political correctness.” God either has a sense of humour or very bad aim.

Mr. Perkins is on vacation this month but called into his own radio show to tell how he and his family had to escape by canoe, and that his home will take some six months to rebuild. He then spins this disaster into an opportunity to “suffer for God’s sake” (as if suffering is a good thing).

The forward positioning of nuclear weapons is shrouded in some mystery, unless they are on our subs (whose locations are usually a mystery) or ships (and only a few of those.)

I have been under the impression that the US does not permanently maintain nuclear weapons on land (i.e., for distribution by the USAF) outside the US anymore save perhaps for a NATO-use stockpile.

But those would be held only in NATO countries, and I suspect only today in the UK.

The most interesting theory I’ve heard is that the police tried to shake them down for a bribe after catching them partying in a bad part of town. They reported it as an armed robbery to the massive embarrassment of the police and judiciary. Hence the current state of freak out by them.

A little op-ed on the squat toilet craziness you posted about the other night.

Basically, the thrust is a hopeful one. That the power of One Nation is in the electoral act of protest; not particularly coherent, or even unified.
I’m a little more cynical, however. I know that the Tea Party’s rich supporters don’t really have an antipodean equivalent (the mining concerns still largely back the Liberal Party who have to entertain a coalition with their agricultural partners, the Nationals), but if education in this country declines in the face of a culture clash, all bets are off.

“Fundamentalist absolutism” can apply to any action by a human.

What I think we are seeing in India has more to do with old fashioned nationalism, which rides on the back of an older angst by Hindus of encroaching “Abrahamicists.”

The nationalism gets particularly amped up in this current context of Kashmir, where the political boundaries, of Pakistan vs. India, is a prominent force in Indian political life.

So this then becomes a chicken-n-egg problem (which is not really a problem in biology - the egg came first). Does war over a boundary drive religious hatred, or did religious hatred drive the political border?

Yet clearly the turmoil of Hindu nationalism in India has a religious component - which is why I posted about the Dalits getting attacked by Bos fundamentalists.

It can be nearly impossible, and in some cases truly impossible, to divorce a person from their religious indoctrination. It’s very, very hard to unlearn a pattern.

Centuries of a growing secular worldview, combined with the enormous success of the undertaking of “science” as a human endeavor, puts all the old belief systems at risk.

And they know it.

The forward positioning of nuclear weapons is shrouded in some mystery, unless they are on our subs (whose locations are usually a mystery) or ships (and only a few of those.)

I have been under the impression that the US does not permanently maintain nuclear weapons on land (i.e., for distribution by the USAF) outside the US anymore save perhaps for a NATO-use stockpile.

But those would be held only in NATO countries, and I suspect only today in the UK.

I guess I find it a bit troubling to think we would still have nukes stationed in AF bases in Turkey.

There is next to zero risk of Turkey seizing and using any US nuclear weapons. In an extreme instance of stupidity, they might find themselves with a very tricky Superfund site. Trust me.

We were not allowed to drink while performing, but to make up for that, the staff would turn us loose behind the bar afterwards. So we would drink ourselves silly until they were done counting and cleaning up, then head next door to Mary’s Cafe for a big plate of eggs, biscuits and gravy to soak up the alcohol enough to risk driving home…

They know that they don’t have a political agenda or a policy platform that has a chance of winning, so they’re left with investigating Clinton for the 100th time. They are hoping to catch her or people she works with in a perjury trap, because they also know there’s nothing there that reaches the level warranting so many investigations in the first place.

They’ve nearly given up on Benghazi except they’ll use the email “scandal” to reach back and give Benghazi some CPR.

The GOP never gave any of the attacks on US diplomatic facilities during a GOP administration this kind of scrutiny. Ever. It’s a witch hunt pure and simple.

And it’s a clash of GOP memes - that she’s simultaneously both the most evil and diabolical person to ever have a say in US politics and the most inept and caught. How else can you explain right wing belief that Clinton has killed so many and gotten away with it.

All this is going on with the following backdrop:

The GOP refuses to act on a clean Zika funding bill, which means that the federal government is delaying on giving assistance to southern states dealing with mosquito control as well as basic research into Zika and how to prevent the disease’s spread.

The GOP also has a nominee in Trump whose top honcho is up to his eyeballs in connections to the Russians, complete with payments that can’t be explained (and are likely illegal). Yeah, that’s Paul Manafort. But the rest of the Trump campaign isn’t any better, having gotten an influx of alt-right extremists who want to double down on Trump’s hate/bigotry to unleash to bigot brigade in November.

After all, who else but Trump would claim that he’s trying to reach out to minorities by talking to an all white audience in Wisconsin.

We’ve been here before with Whitewater, we know the routine by now. Dig in one spot until you finally cannot find anything worth digging further, then you dig through the scraps until you find a new hole to dig. It started with “BENGHAZI!!!” and then moved to emails, and now the effort is to move from the emails to the Clinton Foundation. Why? Because Benghazi petered out due to no crimes, “Emailgate” is turning up nothing upon which to base criminal charges, so their next hope is they can catch the CF in corruption charges.

Speaking of people being in denial, I’ve got a Bro on another board who’s insistent that it doesn’t matter if Trump wins, because he won’t have the support to make anything he wants become law. And that’s just classic Naderite thinking, something they told themselves all through 2000 about Dubya: “Even if he wins, he won’t be able to do anything.”

4 years later, we were involved in two foreign wars, had laws that infringed upon our civil rights, had massive tax cuts that have done our economy no favors, and Bush’s poll numbers were high enough that he won reelection.

If Trump wins the presidency, odds are that Republicans retain Congress. And if that happens, then it doesn’t matter how unpopular Trump’s ideas are, the GOP will see them made law. And that’s atop all the shit they can think up that he will happily sign into law.

Pretty much, I was talking about the rise of fascism in Europe in the 30’s. The global depression definitely enabled fascism in a way that had times been more economically prosperous had not. However, it’s not just economics, it IS that they are threaten by African-Americans like the President and other minority groups holding more influence then they had in the past. It’s sort of why the KKK was never really that big in places that had smell percentages of African-Americans or that pogroms were more rare in Siberia versus the Pale in the Russian Empire.

It’s never 100%, but some views become part of the majority. And a lot of people just don’t give it much thought until they’re confronted with it. One of the lessons of the Civil Rights movement was that a lot of whites had to be shown (on television) what was being done in their name in order for them to finally oppose it.

We can hope this is a big part of turning that around. There are already rumblings of change. I’ve seen more stories about the shortcomings of private prisons in the news and Univ. of CA recently divested their private prison holdings after students demonstrated over the issue.

This is the kind of stuff that just goes on unmentioned in our public discourse. It’s completely off the radar screen.

Too many people have bought into the idea of privatization. They’ve been told the government can’t do anything right, so we should just contract the services to private companies.

Of course, they ignore the fact that the only way for private companies to do things cheaper and still make a profit is to cut corners, not provide equivalent service and to lie/cheat about the quality of the services they provide.

So we have private schools that opt out of standards testing. Prisons that allow rampant abuse, feed rotten food to prisoners and hire poorly trained guards. Background screeners who outright lie about how thoroughly the checks were performed (Hi Snowden!), mercenary outfits providing security and doing jobs that should be done by our military, etc.

I think we should privatize the jobs of the congress-critters who vote for such changes. Heck, I’m sure we could find people equally qualified who’d work for less than the salary currently provided to those idiot elected officials. I smell profit!

I liked the test that I believe ABC News did proving how foolish many of them are. Honestly, I think it just makes an already chaotic situation that much more worse. It’s very easy to believe “If only a good guy with a gun” stopped the shooter but it’s fantasy. It’s the same fantasy that fuels “Well if only people had guns during the Nazi occupation.” Because civilians would be able to stop the Nazis in ways professional armies did not.

It’s still policing through racial profiling and using fines/arrests to fund local government operations, which means that poor communities stay poor and can’t get out of the orbit of funding the very institutions that keep these people poor, underserved, and in jails.

That’s all well and good, but that understates how badly the GOP looked at the RNC. At the RNC in Cleveland, there were 18 delegates who were African American out of 2,472. That comes out to 0.7%. That’s not just spectacularly low, but so low that you actually have to try hard to make sure that you drive the number to those levels since African Americans account for roughly 12% of the population.

How was this accomplished? Simple. Engage in decades of irrational hate and anger towards minorities who sought equal rights and protections and the GOP decided that it was more important to protect the primacy of angry whites who thought that someone else exercising the same right that they had was depriving them of something in some fashion.

Some of the best pie I ever had was in a small town just outside of Austin called Round Top. There’s a place out there called Royers that’s known for their pies. Haven’t been there in a while, but the last time I went they charged extra if you DIDN’T want ice cream on your pie. Hah.

That’s all well and good, but that understates how badly the GOP looked at the RNC. At the RNC in Cleveland, there were 18 delegates who were African American out of 2,472. That comes out to 0.7%. That’s not just spectacularly low, but so low that you actually have to try hard to make sure that you drive the number to those levels since African Americans account for roughly 12% of the population.

How was this accomplished? Simple. Engage in decades of irrational hate and anger towards minorities who sought equal rights and protections and the GOP decided that it was more important to protect the primacy of angry whites who thought that someone else exercising the same right that they had was depriving them of something in some fashion.

This is the background. Thiel decided to underwrite Hogan (real name Terry Bollea) legal team to the tune of $10 million. That’s a lot more legal firepower than if Hogan did the funding himself.

Speculation that a secret benefactor was backing Mr. Bollea’s case was whispered during the trial but largely dismissed as a conspiracy theory. It gained currency in large part as a result of an unusual decision Mr. Bollea’s legal team made: It purposely excluded a claim that would have allowed Gawker’s insurance company to help pay for its defense as well as damages. This wasn’t about Hogan being made whole, this was about Thiel using Hogan to get even with Denton and Gawker; while I think that Nick Denton is an asshole and yellow journalist in the worst tradition of the phrase, what Thiel and Hogan were able to accomplish was, while completely legal, something that can have long-lasting chilling effects.

Good segue to mentioning the excellent 9th Circuit decision prohibiting the DOJ from going after medical marijuana in states where it is legal. Why they are still fighting on the wrong side on this issue is beyond me. Prosecuting people for growing, selling or using marijuana is a destructive waste of taxpayer money.

A poll is a hypothesis. Rallies and social media presence are empirical evidence. A hypothesis unsupported by empirical evidence is wrong.

A poll is an experiment. It tests the hypothesis that voters feel differently about the candidates. It tests that hypothesis by asking them. That is an observation. This observation may allow the pollster to reach a conclusion that one candidate is favored by more voters than the other.

Numbers and enthusiasm at rallies are also an observation. They tell you about the people AT THAT RALLY. They tell you nothing about the people NOT at that rally, who vastly outnumber the people at that rally.

Social media presence is also an observation that tells you only about the participants.

The thing is, of these three types of observations, one has proven a reliable predictor of election results, and the other two have not. Ask Bernie Sanders.

Numbers and enthusiasm at rallies are also an observation. They tell you about the people AT THAT RALLY. They tell you nothing about the people NOT at that rally, who vastly outnumber the people at that rally.

Social media presence is also an observation that tells you only about the participants.

To expand on this, it only tells you that people were AT THAT RALLY, or ARE FOLLOWING him on social media. But gives no indication their motivations for doing so.

Let me reiterate the accusations of Milo’s colleagues so that it is perfectly clear: Milo took donations for a charity designed to help underprivileged kids go to school and POCKETED THEM.

The participants of the livestream as well as the former director are demanding answers. The grant never materialized, and everyone involved has been left in the dark.

There are lots of reasons to hate on Gawker, and I’m not going to lose any sleep over Gawker not being there. But, no court case exists in isolation, and it’s what the Gawker case - being pursued to the destruction of the company rather than a settlement that would have been pursued under the situation where Hogan was not being financed by someone not involved in the case - represents that’s the unsettling part. Allowing the wealthy to pursue cases until the defendant is forced out of business or into bankruptcy is wrong. It’s not right when a mom and pop shop is sued by a large company because the big company knows it can outlast the smaller company, and it’s not right in this case.
