Boxing corruption at the Rio Olympics. Kinda sad. Kids work towards their Olympic goals and get screwed by judges.

So they’re not changing anything? At least after the ice-dancing scandal in Salt Lake City they gave the Canadian couple medals too (though without taking away the Russians’ medals.)

From the article, it seems not. Which sucks. It looks like they don’t want to admit to the whole thing.

I didn’t think I’d watch but I have every night. The gymnastics was great and the two team beach volleyball was amazing. I could watch that every day. That’s some serious athletics.

The Ryan Lochte thing is weird. I have no idea what happened to Lochte but my husband was robbed in Lima exactly how Lochte said he was robbed in Rio.

I hope they (Lochte and the three other swimmers) didn’t make that shit up because that would suck. But reading about it, it really seems like the Rio cops are doing some pretty heavy intimidation tactics.

The Olympics are absolutely the only sporting events I pay any attention to at all, and about half the time I give them a pass—like this year. The Winter Games are more interesting to me anyway.

I prefer winter games but I’m finding stuff I like now.

I used to play volleyball so I’m loving this (the gold metal match is on now). And I’ve always liked gymnastics. The rest I can take or leave but I find its our go to channel every night no
matter.

And I’m hardly a sports person. Short of my addiction to curling and poker, that’s about my sports love.

Adam Silverman over at Balloon Juice links to a great piece in The Guardian:

The dark history of Donald Trump’s rightwing revolt

The Republican party, its leaders like to say, is a party of ideas. Debates over budgets and government programmes are important, but they must be conducted with an eye on the bigger questions - questions about the character of the state, the future of freedom and the meaning of virtue. These beliefs provide the foundation for a conservative intellectual establishment - thinktanks such as the American Enterprise Institute, magazines such as National Review, pundits such as George Will and Bill Kristol - dedicated to advancing the right’s agenda.

Over the last year, that establishment has been united by one thing: opposition to Donald Trump. Republican voters may have succumbed to a temporary bout of collective insanity - or so Trump’s critics on the right believe - but the party’s intelligentsia remain certain that entrusting the Republican nomination to a reality television star turned populist demagogue has been a disaster for their cause and their country. Whatever Trump might be, he is not a conservative.

That belief is comforting, but it is wrong. Trump is a unique character, but the principles he defends and the passions he inflames have been part of the modern American right since its formation in the aftermath of the second world war. Most conservative thinkers have forgotten or repressed this part of their history, which is why they are undergoing a collective nervous breakdown today. Like addicts the morning after a bender, they are baffled at the face they see in the mirror.

I’m waiting for super squad to become an Olympic event

“The Marines started off with a gear inspection, went immediately into a combat fitness test then directly did a 100-question written test which covered basic infantry skills,” said Vasseur. “Afterward, they were issued their operation order for a patrol to conduct daylight patrolling.”

The patrol took place in the Juliet Training Area aboard Camp Pendleton where the Marines and sailors were required to navigate through harsh terrain to locate six checkpoints and call for fire from notional supporting assets such as mortars.

The Marines seemed to never stop moving, coming straight out of the patrol, they shifted into a defensive posture for the next portion of the competition.

“They set into the defense, got attacked and the next day started a timed nine-mile movement to Range 408,” explained Vasseur. “They conducted a live-fire attack and moved into another three-mile movement completing an unknown distance range as a marksmanship test for the last part of the competition.”

Also a former water polo player. It’s weird seeing Acevado and Moses as the old guys on the team. And I don’t recognize any names on the women’s team (there was a time when I knew most of the team and my sister probably should have been on it).

As for the armpit hair, that’s not even top ten of bad things that happen under water. I’ve two or three chipped teeth that can attest to that

My graduating class had seventeen in 1978. I haz oldz.

My wife the former Libertarian has expressed interest in the organisation Bugles Across America. (The organisation provides buglers and trumpet players to play “Taps” for veterans and active duty at the request of families, due to the shortage of military buglers.)

On expressing that desire, my brother-in-law mailed her his bugle.

Went into town today: someone set up at one of the motels a “Trump gear store” where you can get everything Trump (except a refund from his university). They’ve taken over a third of the parking lot and the closed restaurant attached to the building for the store.

That is in a town of 1,100 people. I really don’t see that as a successful money-raiser for the Trump campaign (though this could be someone grifting off his name, I didn’t check).

Nate Silver has this district (NE3) as the most likely to vote for Mr. Trump.

So, this popped up:

Two independent sources told euractiv.com that the US has started transferring nuclear weapons stationed in Turkey to Romania, against the background of worsening relations between Washington and Ankara .

According to one of the sources, the transfer has been very challenging in technical and political terms.

“It’s not easy to move 20+ nukes,” said the source, on conditions of anonymity.

euractiv.com

This is uncorroborated at the present; please bear that in mind. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is denying it with the following statement:

The Romanian foreign ministry strongly denied the information that the country has become home of US nukes. “In response to your request, Romanian MFA firmly dismisses the information you referred to,” a spokesperson wrote.

So for the time being, this is unconfirmed. But if it is in fact true, than that’s a major development.

Tony Perkins, the raging homophobe of the Family Research Council (wingnut for Hate Gays and Liberals with a charity tax exemption), lost his home to the flooding in Louisiana.

I do not wish ill on Tony Perkins (and certainly not Louisiana, which has to put up with him besides all the rain). Mr. Perkins however, continually rants about how earthquakes and floods and hurricanes and whatnot are because of the “geyh agenda and liberal political correctness.” God either has a sense of humour or very bad aim.

Mr. Perkins is on vacation this month but called into his own radio show to tell how he and his family had to escape by canoe, and that his home will take some six months to rebuild. He then spins this disaster into an opportunity to “suffer for God’s sake” (as if suffering is a good thing).

The best organizing, bigly!

“I actually believe [Trump] will take Virginia,” said Michael Hirsch, chairman of the Fredericksburg Republican Committee and the Fredericksburg Virginia Patriots. “The primaries have been attended with record-breaking attendance. I believe that groundswell is going to make the difference.

“People are just tired of a broken Washington, broken politics. … America is saying ‘enough is enough.’ Bring on the outsider. I believe that what he will stir as a response in Virginia will give us back statewide races.”

Hirsh said Trump’s planned appearance underscores Virginia’s position as a battleground state this fall. He said Clinton’s selection of Kaine “is indication of how weak she saw herself here.”

Hirsch said local Republican committees have been working to bring Trump to Fredericksburg. He learned around noon Wednesday that the nominee would hold a rally here in just three days and was working to get the word out to fellow supporters.

The forward positioning of nuclear weapons is shrouded in some mystery, unless they are on our subs (whose locations are usually a mystery) or ships (and only a few of those.)

I have been under the impression that the US does not permanently maintain nuclear weapons on land (i.e., for distribution by the USAF) outside the US anymore save perhaps for a NATO-use stockpile.

But those would be held only in NATO countries, and I suspect only today in the UK.

I guess I find it a bit troubling to think we would still have nukes stationed in AF bases in Turkey.

75
freetoken  Aug 18, 2016 • 2:46:16am

Wikipedia sez:

On 10 June 2013, former Dutch prime minister Ruud Lubbers confirmed the existence of 22 shared nuclear bombs at Volkel Air Base.[

There just aren’t very many US tactical nukes left. The Obama administration decided to go ahead to extend the lifetime of the current stock - a decision which many of the more progressive elements in US politics found disappointing. But I bet nearly all the remaining stock are in the US, with only a few in a few NATO countries.

Interesting article.

On thinking about it though it seems that Burnham, and especially Francis, made the mistake of deciding on a conclusion and then coming up with data to support that conclusion.

It wasn’t, “Society is ruled by an uncaring, technocratic elite therefore the white proletariat should unite to seize power.” It was, “White people should unite to seize power and an uncaring, technocratic elite is the reason we’ve chosen to do so.”

What’s most amusing is I’ve heard the ideas of Burnham and Francis before in the writings of John Ralston Saul who is about as far from a conservative and racist as it is possible to be. Saul isn’t a Marxist either.

I guess that’s why he has so little influence. Saul doesn’t fit in the standard left/right political matrix.

I’m trying to figure out why they would make up such a story. Plus, other athletes have come forward with similar stories of being robbed. Perhaps the officials in Brazil are just embarrassed and are trying to discredit Lochte.

The most interesting theory I’ve heard is that the police tried to shake them down for a bribe after catching them partying in a bad part of town. They reported it as an armed robbery to the massive embarrassment of the police and judiciary. Hence the current state of freak out by them.

Or the insinuation that one study, often poorly done, is THE PROOF that something causes cancer or autism or hangnails or body odor or nightmares, etc. My FIL’s sister was texting me yesterday (about the grandkids and donating clothes) and said one of her granddaughters “doesn’t believe in vaccinating her children” because of the Wakefield Study. New targets of hate for the RWNJs today?

Olympic hurdler Kristi Castlin used the occasion of her bronze-medal performance to speak out about gun violence.

Castlin’s father was murdered when she was 12 by someone who broke into the hotel he managed and demanded money. She also attended Virginia Tech at the time of the 2007 massacre that killed nearly three dozen people.

After a race in which she, Nia Ali and Brianna Rollins completed a first-ever American sweep of the medals in the 100-meter hurdles, Castlin used her platform to discuss a topic that has affected her deeply.

“I’ve been around a lot of gun violence in my life,” Castlin said. “Not just Americans, but all over the world, we’re always touched by gun violence, always touched by tragedy. It feels good to be an example, not just for Americans but families all over the world.”

Ali has been affected by gun violence, too.

In 2009, Ali’s father, Aleem, a supervisor in the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, walked up to a car and shot his ex-girlfriend to death, then killed himself.

Hindu-nationalism vs. Amnesty International:

Amnesty International India asks employees to work from home

With protests expected to reach their door step, Amnesty International India has informed their employees to work from their homes on Thursday.

Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, which has intensified their protests against the human rights organisations for alleged anti-national slogans raised during a recent programme, was scheduled to gather at Amnesty’s Indira Nagar office. Pre-empting the protest, local police officials requested the office to remain shut - while a large number of police personnel stood guard outside the office. Around 86 employees worked out of the office on Thursday.

[…]

Wikipedia sez this about ABVP:

ABVP is a right-wing all India student organisation affiliated to the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It participates in joint activities with BJP’s official youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.[2][3] It claims to be India’s largest student organisation.[

Over the last week or so I’ve been posting about Hindu extremists attacking beef-eating Dalits, and the accusations that the BJP is not doing enough to counter that.

This time, Amnesty is in the crosshairs, because they have been noting what is going on in Kashmir. And Amnesty is apparently getting under the skin of some Indians:

Sedition charge is silly but Amnesty’s moth-eaten credibility has taken further beating

The row over the sedition charge — an archaic and colonial law that needs to be scrapped without delay — has taken away from the core questions surrounding Amnesty International India’s programme on Independence Day where it sought to flag the Indian state’s human rights violations in Kashmir. This was the first part of a multi-city event designed to draw attention to New Delhi’s alleged excesses in the strife-torn region.

[…]

So what could Amnesty possibly do that was so horrible?

[…]

Amnesty’s shtick is that it is a non-partisan institution. Its entire moral legitimacy stems from that premise. Was it innocent to the response such an event with blatant political overtones might trigger especially at a time when India is battling a secessionist struggle fuelled by an aggressive neighbouring country that uses terrorism as state policy?

While Amnesty is well within its rights to flag reports of excesses by Indian security forces in Kashmir, the Bengaluru event went much beyond that. There was a talk show, video screening, theatre performance and even a performance by a Kashmiri hip-hop artiste.

[…]

Oh dear… a theatre performance and a hip-hop artist.

And look at how this writer develops his argument that what Amnesty did was wrong:

[…]

Amnesty will fool no one if, in this case, it seeks to hide behind the ruse of “freedom of speech and expression”. In the wake of Charlie Hebdo killings, it held that freedom of expression “is not absolute and it may be subject to certain restrictions…”

Patel, executive director of its India chapter, had written in a Livemint column in 2012, Learnt in Godhra, forgotten in Jaipur that “the critical learning was that freedom of speech in India must be regulated” in the context of the Salman Rushdie affair in Jaipur. Elsewhere in the column, he wrote: “The damage is done by a Hindi-medium world view. Trying to fight it with English-medium tools will end in frustration. This is why a debate about free speech here has no meaning. All these things dissolve to nothing in the knowledge that a real price is extracted for this freedom. The men who read Rushdie aloud in Jaipur and fled after lighting the fuse were neither brave nor considerate. Such deliberate mischief has consequences.”

[…]

More collapsing worldviews colliding.

A little op-ed on the squat toilet craziness you posted about the other night.

Basically, the thrust is a hopeful one. That the power of One Nation is in the electoral act of protest; not particularly coherent, or even unified.
I’m a little more cynical, however. I know that the Tea Party’s rich supporters don’t really have an antipodean equivalent (the mining concerns still largely back the Liberal Party who have to entertain a coalition with their agricultural partners, the Nationals), but if education in this country declines in the face of a culture clash, all bets are off.

re: #99 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Mostly, but I think we need to be careful about becoming too reductionist.

“Fundamentalist absolutism” can apply to any action by a human.

What I think we are seeing in India has more to do with old fashioned nationalism, which rides on the back of an older angst by Hindus of encroaching “Abrahamicists.”

The nationalism gets particularly amped up in this current context of Kashmir, where the political boundaries, of Pakistan vs. India, is a prominent force in Indian political life.

So this then becomes a chicken-n-egg problem (which is not really a problem in biology - the egg came first). Does war over a boundary drive religious hatred, or did religious hatred drive the political border?

Yet clearly the turmoil of Hindu nationalism in India has a religious component - which is why I posted about the Dalits getting attacked by Bos fundamentalists.

It can be nearly impossible, and in some cases truly impossible, to divorce a person from their religious indoctrination. It’s very, very hard to unlearn a pattern.

Centuries of a growing secular worldview, combined with the enormous success of the undertaking of “science” as a human endeavor, puts all the old belief systems at risk.

And they know it.

There is next to zero risk of Turkey seizing and using any US nuclear weapons. In an extreme instance of stupidity, they might find themselves with a very tricky Superfund site. Trust me.

Mostly, but I think we need to be careful about becoming too reductionist.

“Fundamentalist absolutism” can apply to any action by a human.

Yes, that is a reduced version of a much bigger picture:

Absolutism in the notion that one’s religion/race is the One True Religion/One Master Race and all others are not only just false, but hostile.

Which turns it into a handy tool for promoting a political agenda based on creed or race.

Good morning!

A long time ago, in the mid eighties, we were the house band at the Stockman’s Club in Flagstaff, Arizona. We were not allowed to drink while performing, but to make up for that, the staff would turn us loose behind the bar afterwards. So we would drink ourselves silly until they were done counting and cleaning up, then head next door to Mary’s Cafe for a big plate of eggs, biscuits and gravy to soak up the alcohol enough to risk driving home…

lawhawk  Aug 18, 2016 • 6:09:50am

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see Trump somehow managed to get his phone back and is tweeting once again nonsensical ramblings indicating a lunatic mind.

He’s now rambling on how he’ll be known as Mr. Brexit.

For what exactly?

As Geoff points out, Washington was the original Mr. Brexit.

Trump isn’t even tangentially involved in British politics and needed to get schooled on what Brexit was.

Meanwhile, the GOP is busy setting up the Permanent Committee to Investigate Hillary Clinton:

Oh, if you think this is just a temporary thing, you’ll be mistaken. They know that they don’t have a political agenda or a policy platform that has a chance of winning, so they’re left with investigating Clinton for the 100th time. They are hoping to catch her or people she works with in a perjury trap, because they also know there’s nothing there that reaches the level warranting so many investigations in the first place.

They’ve nearly given up on Benghazi except they’ll use the email “scandal” to reach back and give Benghazi some CPR.

The GOP never gave any of the attacks on US diplomatic facilities during a GOP administration this kind of scrutiny. Ever. It’s a witch hunt pure and simple.

And it’s a clash of GOP memes - that she’s simultaneously both the most evil and diabolical person to ever have a say in US politics and the most inept and caught. How else can you explain right wing belief that Clinton has killed so many and gotten away with it.

All this is going on with the following backdrop:

The GOP refuses to act on a clean Zika funding bill, which means that the federal government is delaying on giving assistance to southern states dealing with mosquito control as well as basic research into Zika and how to prevent the disease’s spread.

The GOP also has a nominee in Trump whose top honcho is up to his eyeballs in connections to the Russians, complete with payments that can’t be explained (and are likely illegal). Yeah, that’s Paul Manafort. But the rest of the Trump campaign isn’t any better, having gotten an influx of alt-right extremists who want to double down on Trump’s hate/bigotry to unleash to bigot brigade in November.

After all, who else but Trump would claim that he’s trying to reach out to minorities by talking to an all white audience in Wisconsin.

Reminder. The GOP wants to launch an investigation into the FBI treatment of the Clinton email issue. This is the FBI response to the GOP demand to turn over information:

This is what the GOP wants to do. Waste everyone’s time trying to re-investigate and litigate a matter that found no criminal wrongdoing and for which FBI Director Comey said that no reasonable prosecutor would ever bring forth. Not only does the FBI identify how this case differs from other recent cases involving classified info and misuse (Petraeus among others), but this is an explicit action by the GOP to show that they are not reasonable.

They’d rather spend their time investigating than governing or legislating.

Legislating is hard LH, witch hunts to satisfy their base’s desires are more easier. It’d be nice if their base realized how utterly useless they are as legislators and started voting them out but they won’t and if they do, they almost always replace them with people even worse.

We’ve been here before with Whitewater, we know the routine by now. Dig in one spot until you finally cannot find anything worth digging further, then you dig through the scraps until you find a new hole to dig. It started with “BENGHAZI!!!” and then moved to emails, and now the effort is to move from the emails to the Clinton Foundation. Why? Because Benghazi petered out due to no crimes, “Emailgate” is turning up nothing upon which to base criminal charges, so their next hope is they can catch the CF in corruption charges.

Speaking of people being in denial, I’ve got a Bro on another board who’s insistent that it doesn’t matter if Trump wins, because he won’t have the support to make anything he wants become law. And that’s just classic Naderite thinking, something they told themselves all through 2000 about Dubya: “Even if he wins, he won’t be able to do anything.”

4 years later, we were involved in two foreign wars, had laws that infringed upon our civil rights, had massive tax cuts that have done our economy no favors, and Bush’s poll numbers were high enough that he won reelection.

If Trump wins the presidency, odds are that Republicans retain Congress. And if that happens, then it doesn’t matter how unpopular Trump’s ideas are, the GOP will see them made law. And that’s atop all the shit they can think up that he will happily sign into law.

How does that argument make any sense? If you’re President, you have the power to pass Executive Orders. Plus, you get the opportunity to nominate Judges which ends up shaping the law through out the country. Your Bro is delusional.

I had a girlfriend who was planning not to vote because she didn’t like Secretary Clinton. Thankfully, after she’s seen how hateful and dangerous Trump has been (as well as his supporters), she’s completely changed her mind and is on Team Clinton.

It’s how they convinced themselves that there was no need to vote for Gore, because either he’d win and they had nothing to worry about or Dubya would win but be so unpopular that he’d get nothing accomplished. Then 9/11 happened, Dubya’s popularity shot into the stratosphere, and their only excuse was “I didn’t vote for him!” No, you dingbat, you made a “protest” vote that cost Gore the election, and then thought that protesting against the war would be enough to sway Congress.

At this point, I’m not as worried about Trump winning as I am about the long term implications of a Trump candidacy and what it means for our political landscape. As that video showed, white supremacists are emboldened by Trump in a way they have never been before. If this can happen in a time of economic prosperity, what can happen in a time of economic troubles? I do agree with Bernie Sanders a little that bad economic conditions help breed these types.

I’m sick of the bros, sick of the wingnuts. Both are fucking assholes in their own way. The former because he didn’t get his purity candidate, he shits all over Clinton and acts like there’s no difference between Clinton and Trump. The latter because knows the difference and he wants that X1000.

Pretty much, I was talking about the rise of fascism in Europe in the 30’s. The global depression definitely enabled fascism in a way that had times been more economically prosperous had not. However, it’s not just economics, it IS that they are threaten by African-Americans like the President and other minority groups holding more influence then they had in the past. It’s sort of why the KKK was never really that big in places that had smell percentages of African-Americans or that pogroms were more rare in Siberia versus the Pale in the Russian Empire.

“What do we do when we find somebody that has extreme views?” Hannity asked in a town hall that was taped Tuesday but aired Wednesday so that it wouldn’t interfere with the live broadcast of Trump’s speech in Milwaukee. “Do we throw them the hell out?

“I’d throw him out,” Trump said of Mateen, who is a naturalized U.S. citizen. “If you look at him, I’d throw him out.”

They really don’t see the irony in this kind of belief, with their views also being extreme.

I think one of the things that helped gays was that in the last decade or so, as gays came out to their families, more and more people found out they knew, or were related to, a gay person. But yet you don’t see that as an abuse of executive power. Really, Trump’s whole mantra and when the GOP supports him, he shows how full of shit they really are when they claim Obama abuses his executive power. That’s what they fear. It’s that Trump is so brash about being a hypocrite that he doesn’t even attempt to hide it. He can’t be subtle about it like a Romney or even Ted Cruz.

It’s never 100%, but some views become part of the majority. And a lot of people just don’t give it much thought until they’re confronted with it. One of the lessons of the Civil Rights movement was that a lot of whites had to be shown (on television) what was being done in their name in order for them to finally oppose it.

Rallies only speak to the intensity of feeling of your supporters, not their numbers, and certainly not what portion of the population supports you. Trump seems to have intense support from maybe 30% of the population overall, grudging support from maybe 8-10% more, and intense opposition from 60%. That’s not a winning formula.

I saw this morning Dana Perino had to push back on Fox Moron Eric Bolling about this;

The problem with continuing to push “Emailgate” is that it’s gotten into the oversaturation point and will soon begin netting them negative returns. 63% of the nation has already decided they’ve heard too damn much about her emails, so we’re edging into that territory where continuing the crusade against her will actually begin to hurt them in the polls. Republicans taking to the campaign trail with the promise that they’ll impeach her over the emails may work in the deep red regions of the US, but in purple or blue states it’s going to leave them open to accusations that they’re putting past grievances over fixing shit back home.

Those who would criticize a GOP President are disrespectful of America. Those who would criticize a Democratic President are just Patriots exercising Free Speech (otherwise known as pre-Second Amendment rights).

That is what did them in when they impeached her husband.

At some point, I wonder if they really care how much it hurts them, as long as they can drag Clinton down with them. They might see it as worth the pain, long as they leave the impression of ‘both sides same thing’.

I strongly suspect their overall plan is to just keep digging into the emails with the hopes that it will lead them to a “scandal” the finally hits pay-dirt. Hence the sudden fascination among wingnuts about talk that the FBI is looking into corruption charges against the Clinton Foundation. Like Whitewater, they keep hoping that if they can’t manage to get the Clintons directly, they can do so indirectly via “guilt by association.”

Thing is, it’s not just the greater STL area, but large parts of the nation have a justice system that is so thorough fixed - it is rigged against minorities. Whether it’s law enforcement racial profiling or towns or counties that treat minorities as a piggy bank and criminalize the inability to pay fines, therefore creating a spiral of law breaking/poverty/criminalization for infractions that shouldn’t be anywhere near the kind of thing resulting in jail sentences, let alone the use of deadly force all too often.

This is the kind of stuff that just goes on unmentioned in our public discourse. It’s completely off the radar screen.

Too many people have bought into the idea of privatization. They’ve been told the government can’t do anything right, so we should just contract the services to private companies.

Of course, they ignore the fact that the only way for private companies to do things cheaper and still make a profit is to cut corners, not provide equivalent service and to lie/cheat about the quality of the services they provide.

So we have private schools that opt out of standards testing. Prisons that allow rampant abuse, feed rotten food to prisoners and hire poorly trained guards. Background screeners who outright lie about how thoroughly the checks were performed (Hi Snowden!), mercenary outfits providing security and doing jobs that should be done by our military, etc.

I think we should privatize the jobs of the congress-critters who vote for such changes. Heck, I’m sure we could find people equally qualified who’d work for less than the salary currently provided to those idiot elected officials. I smell profit!

Yeah, I don’t imagine Trump really wants the discussion on what constitutes “extremism” in this country. Because most of the GOP’s base would likely fall somewhere in the spectrum.

I posted this in #144 above earlier regarding Trump tossing out American citizens he sees as extremists.

I think Obama should throw him (Trump) out of the country for extremism and as a danger to the world. He likes Gitmo so damn much, maybe they paint some gold paint on the bars and ship his fat orange ass there.

I think we should privatize the jobs of the congress-critters who vote for such changes. Heck, I’m sure we could find people equally qualified who’d work for less than the salary currently provided to those idiot elected officials. I smell profit!

and look at the links between congresspeople who take corporate donations and ones who vote for privatization measures involving those very corporations

Because Bernie is not the Every Man he wants people to believe. He just bought a $600k summer home. You cannot be the Every Man if you (or your spouse) make a shit ton of money and don’t give a decent amount to charity or you (or your spouse) take money from those who you rail against.

Skeletons, my friend. That is why Bernie is not releasing that information.

Bernie is no longer needed by the progressives, so anything taxes is also no longer needed.

I’ve seen some former Bernie Bros say once Bernie endorsed Clinton he was dead to them. Both he and Liz Warren are on the outs having sold their souls to Hillary and The “Party.”

They want Hillary to screw up the economy, get us in further wars and make sure she is gone in 2012 when some unknown liberal progressive will rise up and take over The Revolution™.

I liked the test that I believe ABC News did proving how foolish many of them are. Honestly, I think it just makes an already chaotic situation that much more worse. It’s very easy to believe “If only a good guy with a gun” stopped the shooter but it’s fantasy. It’s the same fantasy that fuels “Well if only people had guns during the Nazi occupation.” Because civilians would be able to stop the Nazis in ways professional armies did not.

You mean that all those guns in Dallas didn’t stop a mass shooter, but it took law enforcement with a robot carrying a bomb to do it?

Yeah, of course concealed carry will stop crime. Except for all those it didn’t - which is like all of them.

HappyWarrior  Aug 18, 2016 • 9:47:43am

Of course, the fucked up thing is many of these people who post the memes about guns if you really press them actually do believe a lot of the same things we do that there should be background checks but they’re convinced that Obama is out to take their guns. I flat out told my friend who posts gun memes that if he believes there should be background checks on guns, he merely believes that Obama does and that he shouldn’t view Obama as out to get his guns. Too bad he didn’t listen to me.

Getting rid of private prisons is definitely a start. But there’s still places in the country where the local law enforcement has more of an OCP feel than a police force that is there to protect and serve the public.

It’s still policing through racial profiling and using fines/arrests to fund local government operations, which means that poor communities stay poor and can’t get out of the orbit of funding the very institutions that keep these people poor, underserved, and in jails.

That’s all well and good, but that understates how badly the GOP looked at the RNC. At the RNC in Cleveland, there were 18 delegates who were African American out of 2,472. That comes out to 0.7%. That’s not just spectacularly low, but so low that you actually have to try hard to make sure that you drive the number to those levels since African Americans account for roughly 12% of the population.

How was this accomplished? Simple. Engage in decades of irrational hate and anger towards minorities who sought equal rights and protections and the GOP decided that it was more important to protect the primacy of angry whites who thought that someone else exercising the same right that they had was depriving them of something in some fashion.

Fucking A

455
lawhawk  Aug 18, 2016 • 11:05:38am

re: #451 Nyet

This is the background. Thiel decided to underwrite Hogan (real name Terry Bollea) legal team to the tune of $10 million. That’s a lot more legal firepower than if Hogan did the funding himself.

Speculation that a secret benefactor was backing Mr. Bollea’s case was whispered during the trial but largely dismissed as a conspiracy theory. It gained currency in large part as a result of an unusual decision Mr. Bollea’s legal team made: It purposely excluded a claim that would have allowed Gawker’s insurance company to help pay for its defense as well as damages. The move struck observers as odd because most plaintiffs seeking damages usually hope to settle the case by leveraging the deep pockets of an insurer.

Mr. Thiel said, “I figured it would eventually come out,” adding that he was happy his role might spur a conversation about it being “extremely hard for the most common victims to get justice.”

The point is, this is not a case of MegaGigaCorp against Joe Blow. And whatever you think about the merits of THIS case, it should be obvious what someone with Thiel’s wealth could choose to do to innocent publications that he just didn’t like. There’s leveling the playing field, and then there’s tilting it in the other direction.

Thiel brought in money, money that Hogan didn’t have to front, but Thiel basically handpicked Hogan’s legal team, who pointedly pursued a strategy that would leave Gawker’s insurers off-the-hook and extracted the most monetary damage from Gawker and Denton.

This wasn’t about Hogan being made whole, this was about Thiel using Hogan to get even with Denton and Gawker; while I think that Nick Denton is an asshole and yellow journalist in the worst tradition of the phrase, what Thiel and Hogan were able to accomplish was, while completely legal, something that can have long-lasting chilling effects.

A poll is a hypothesis. Rallies and social media presence are empirical evidence. A hypothesis unsupported by empirical evidence is wrong.

A poll is an experiment. It tests the hypothesis that voters feel differently about the candidates. It tests that hypothesis by asking them. That is an observation. This observation may allow the pollster to reach a conclusion that one candidate is favored by more voters than the other.

Numbers and enthusiasm at rallies are also an observation. They tell you about the people AT THAT RALLY. They tell you nothing about the people NOT at that rally, who vastly outnumber the people at that rally.

Social media presence is also an observation that tells you only about the participants.

The thing is, of these three types of observations, one has proven a reliable predictor of election results, and the other two have not. Ask Bernie Sanders.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — It’s harvest time for New Mexico’s green chile. And some residents say peels from the state’s staple crop are creating a hot mess.

The KOAT-TV in Albuquerque reports (goo.gl) that some trucks transporting green chile are dropping peels in Albuquerque’s South Valley. Residents say the peels are sloshing and are spilling out of the trucks and onto roads.

Drivers say one intersection even is covered in green chile.

Andres Garcia says the wet peels are dangerous. He told KOAT-TV he recently had to hit his brakes at a stop sign because his truck kept sliding.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office says it is a misdemeanor crime for any truck to spill loads.

re: #471 Blind Frog Belly White

What I find interesting is how people perceive this case, and how the truth gets lost.

For example, HH made it seem like he lost millions of dollars from WWE because Gawker released a sex tape.

But, that’s not what WWE did.

WWE released Hogan from his last contract because of the story that broke (not just by Gawker) that he went on racist rants. This is the kind of bad publicity from which public companies shy, and given WWE’s product’s background (lots of racism in wrestling), WWE reacted accordingly.

No, that’s not all I got. BTW, I was mistaken that it was Thiel against Mother Jones. It was ANOTHER rich asshole.

So it does turn out that that’s all you got on this case, so you have to jump to another one. In which the plaintiff lost btw.

Why would he need Thiel’s money then?

Sure, that’s always true, but the simple fact is that Gawker could afford to spend much more than Hogan until Thiel came along.

Yeah, and the money Mother Jones spent defending that case, which ran to over $600,000, is just pocket change.

Wow.

Numbers and enthusiasm at rallies are also an observation. They tell you about the people AT THAT RALLY. They tell you nothing about the people NOT at that rally, who vastly outnumber the people at that rally.

Social media presence is also an observation that tells you only about the participants.

To expand on this, it only tells you that people were AT THAT RALLY, or ARE FOLLOWING him on social media. But gives no indication their motivations for doing so.

It’s the other way round - you cannot stay on the case under discussion because you know that there are no good arguments in defense of Gawker.

So you have to jump to a wholly separate case which has other players, other underlying facts and other power differentials.

Oh look, more anti-Semitic BS surrounding Trump’s inner circle.

For a party that claims that they’ve got Jews’ intentions and Israel’s safety/security in mind, it’s mind boggling insane that they’ve got this many white supremacists/KKK/anti-Semites in and around the nominee.

But they sure do project that the Democrats are the ones with the “Jewish” problem.

Perhaps you missed this, but we were discussing not the merits of the Gawker case in isolation, but rather the larger implications of billionaires using the legal system to bankrupt publications and other entities they dislike. The MJ case is an example of such, and so is germane to the discussion.

If you want to have a discussion of whether or not Gawker was a bad actor in this case and this case alone, well, you can have that discussion, but the rest of us were not limiting ourselves to that.

Sorry if this was confusing for you.

Since you cannot exclude rich people from the legal system, the discussion is rather pointless. The only point worth discussing is what to do with the expenses, like the $600,000 you mentioned, in case the court case is found to be without merit. Since such was not the case in Gawker’s court case, there’s nothing further to discuss.

Let me reiterate the accusations of Milo’s colleagues so that it is perfectly clear: Milo took donations for a charity designed to help underprivileged kids go to school and POCKETED THEM.

The participants of the livestream as well as the former director are demanding answers. The grant never materialized, and everyone involved has been left in the dark.

There are lots of reasons to hate on Gawker, and I’m not going to lose any sleep over Gawker not being there. But, no court case exists in isolation, and it’s what the Gawker case - being pursued to the destruction of the company rather than a settlement that would have been pursued under the situation where Hogan was not being financed by someone not involved in the case - represents that’s the unsettling part. Allowing the wealthy to pursue cases until the defendant is forced out of business or into bankruptcy is wrong. It’s not right when a mom and pop shop is sued by a large company because the big company knows it can outlast the smaller company, and it’s not right in this case.

How was this accomplished? Simple. Engage in decades of irrational hate and anger towards minorities who sought equal rights and protections and the GOP decided that it was more important to protect the primacy of angry whites who thought that someone else exercising the same right that they had was depriving them of something in some fashion.

And frame any attempt at addressing issues of racial or sexual inequality as PC gone mad, white genocide or feminaziism
