I’m really glad that Clinton addressed Trump’s alt-right ties. Really, every day that passes by I am glad she’s the nominee. I can’t see a Sanders presidential campaign being able to call out Trump on his bullshit as awesomely and frequently as Clinton does.

I am sorry but really enough of always going back to Byrd when you need to “prove” that the Dems are just as racist. Byrd was respected by both parties in his lifetime. He was someone who also apologized for his past repeatedly unlike Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond. He also was so respected by Richard Nixon that Nixon considered him for a Supreme Court vacancy in the early 70’s. So yeah do NOT pass go and collect 200 dollars. Silent is a good word. I know congress is out but they are all being awfully quiet. We normally have to hear Ryan and McConnell flapping their jaws on something or another. We never see or hear from Rand Paul much and almost all of the Republican politicians currently holding positions are fairly silent.

Even here in Columbus Kasich is hardly mentioned. I guess the flattened 16 Trump ran over are all licking wounds or just trying real hard to stay away from any association with Trump and the election.

And we are two months out of an election!

It’s unprecedented. I’ve never seen a party run away from a candidate like this. Even the bad old days for the Democratic candidates of the 70s and into the 80s do not compare.

Trump is freaking nuclear. Or, as Georgie W Bush would put it…Newk-you-lure.

Speaking of right-wing shitapes, I was looking for the PAGAN scene from the Tom Hanks/Dan Akroyd Dragnet movie earlier, and I found a whole episode of the original show that features a Nazi antagonist (in yellow-tinted shooting glasses, no less - some things don’t change!). The thumbnail on the sidebar caught my eye because it had a big ol’ swastika banner visible.

About 14 minutes in they go to the Nazi prick’s apartment, and end up interrogating him until the end of the episode.

I like how they fixate on Byrd but ignore that they literally had the Dixiecrat nominee in their party caucus for a long time. But even then, Strom Thurmond did show some signs of regret through some of his votes. That’s more than you can say about Jesse Helms who as recently as the early 1990’s talked about wanting to make an African-American colleague cry by whistling Dixie. I just wish Jesse Helms could have been around to see Obama in 2008 and win the popular vote in his own state to boot. Byrd was a much bigger man than that asshole Helms was. I know Byrd was former KKK but I do believe that like Hugo Black before him, he did make a concerted effort to right the wrongs he did as a younger man which is much more than you say about Jesse Helms.

Another great example of keeping it short and sweet. If I understand correctly, Lincoln wrote that speech pretty quickly too. Man, we were so lucky to have Lincoln in 1861-65. Truly an one of kind figure and a true American icon. That’s another thing fucked up about the alt-right. While many traditional conservatives do admire and appreciate Lincoln, Lincoln is despised by teh alt-right psychos.

Mom told me last winter or the winter before about The Trashmen, the first record she ever bought. Mom grew up in Sioux Falls and The Trashmen were over in Minneapolis, so she got that record (BIRD IS THE WORD) when she was 16 because it was there.

Mom moved to Colorado at age 20 and has lived here since. She just had a birthday on Monday (69, dude!) same day Alouette got hitched 45 years prior with her better half.

Cheeto doesn’t really say anything substantive. He repeats himself, digresses midstream, and repeatedly addresses the audience for feedback. Strip all that shit away, and you could convey the typical Trump speech with one declarative sentence. Maybe two.

Contemporary accounts describe his voice as surprisingly high-pitched and not exactly commanding. But then so is Willie Nelson’s. You have the right tune and lyrics, you don’t have to be Waylon Jennings.

The Secular Coalition of America (for which I was temporarily a state board member setting up the state branch) sent me an E-mail about a Tennessee woman running for the state legislature. They are highlighting secular, humanist, and atheist candidates running for office.

Gayle Jordan is seeking election to Tennessee’s State Senate, District 14. She identifies as an atheist and humanist, and is a member of Murfreesboro Freethinkers. Jordan is an attorney and serves as the executive director of Recovering From Religion, a member organization of the Secular Coalition for America. Jordan says she has “watched the legislature of my beloved state govern with unkind, uncaring, and unnecessary legislation, costing the state millions of dollars in legal battles. I listened as they made divisive and hateful statements regarding immigrants, refugees, members of the LBGT community, women, the uninsured, and the poor.” She is running to correct these injustices and end intrusive government overreach. She’s right, too. Regardless of whether you are an atheist or a religious person, the Democratic Party needs to take back the idea that it is the Republicans that are the party of excessive government overreach.

I guess I was expecting the usual actors-interpretation of old TR, gruff and growly, but his voice was more of a tenor than a baritone, and with a weird accent almost exactly like his cousin Franklin: I guess the old-timey upper-crust New York speech pattern, now gone…

Fascinating to me because I learned about his “bully, bully” tics and his self-invention as a rough-guy hunter and always imagined him as a baritone.

Carter’s was also distinctive but not in a particularly appealing way. Same with LBJ’s. The best, really, was Reagan’s, but then he was a longtime pro—a Hollywood and TV pro, not just a political pro. Beyond that, Obama’s is the best, resonant, modulated for the occasion, capable of getting into your heart. The rest are back in the pack somewhere. What do you think?

Still fuming from a distasteful encounter this evening from a hard core Trumpette wearing his “Korean Vet” cap and shooting his mouth off in a restaurant. He wouldn’t shut up, babbling about he hated that “B$%&h Hillary” and how the military would overthrow her. He babbled about what a man Trump was.

I couldn’t take anymore. I asked him why he was saying that. He said, “Because I’m a Proud Marine and a Republican, You’re probably one of them f@#$ for Shillary”.

My reply, “No, I’m just a Gold Star Father whose son was killed in Iraq”.

He responded, “I’m so glad your son died…”

My reply, “Do everyone here a favor and try, just try to put your brain in gear before you open your mouth.”

I’m glad a couple police officers were there eating. One of them came up to me and said, “Sir, I apologize for that asshole”. I said “Thank you, Officer”…

He’s not the first asshole Republican to say that he was glad my son was killed. He won’t be the last…

I was a teenager/college graduate during Reagan’s years. I loved punk rock, but I wasn’t a punk because I hated their stupid rants against the Beatles, Stones, etc. establishment. I was also nominally a Christian (I guess I still might be) and Jimmy Carter’s tone appealed to me (between bong hits). Carter had his problems, but the biggest was that he was too moral for DC (or seemed to be), and that appealed to me. But the first time I heard Reagan speak, my “oh, fuck no” antenna was pinging, and it never stopped.

ETA: I realize I in no way answered your question. Carter was a dull speaker. Reagan was really good in a way that made me want to punch through drywall. And the Dems at the presidential level were so dull.

I was thinking about what you said the other night regarding local Democrats not taking her up on the offer to update their website. The thing is for a lot of Democrats the past Libertarian status can be a huge red flag, one that a year of being a registered Dem isn’t going to fix. It’s not unheard of in deeply red districts for Libertarians and Republicans to infiltrate the Democratic Party and run candidates only to switch back to their original party if they win in the general. Your local Party might also just be dysfunctional but having been out that way I’d definitely categorize it as hostile territory at best, so I’d just give them time and keep reaching out.

As far as I know, they do not know she was a Libertarian. All they know is she is our village’s librarian and married to me.

The problem seems to be the two men who run the county party: One is 88, and one is 87. Neither wants to give up a sliver of (what little) power they have. (One of them is also dying of cancer.)

These are the same guys who won’t talk to me, either, though I am the only elected Democrat in my county. The only traction I get is with the Scott’s Bluff County Democrats in the next county west.

Even the state party won’t talk to either of us, and they don’t know her at all. Our party apparatus here is simply dysfunction.

At least they pulled the five-year out-of-date Website down (or maybe they forgot to pay the bill). My wife even offered free Webhosting for the Democrats here (she owns a Webhosting business).

The difference for me is one of overt vs. covert racism, or alternatively racism as an end to itself vs. racism as something merely tolerated in furtherance of other ideals. For Libertarians racism is something that is generally “condemned” while still nominally tolerated in the name of values perceived to take precedence, like free association or State’s rights. For establishment Republicans racism is just a tool cynically incubated in order to win elections. For the alt-right racism is their actual raison d’être, in the form of re-centering societal power and public life around white people and western culture.

Why that is, I don’t know - as far as I’m concerned, he’s always been little more than a flimflam artist, a confidence trickster.

What’s darkly amusing is this: IMHO, Trump’s doing this for his ego more than anything else. He wants to impress New York City’s ‘high society’ that he’s better than they are, because from what I gather, they’ve long been looking down at him as a boorish oaf; a “short-fingered vulgarian”, if you will. When he loses, he will become an even greater object of scorn and derision among NYC’s elite set than he already his. He will become the butt of jokes, a laughable and pathetic little man whose vanity and narcissism led to him making a contemptible ass of himself on a truly international stage.

I wonder how is ego will handle that realization? That he is, in fact, a loser.

My fear is that he’ll seek to discredit the results, tell his followers the election was stolen and direct them to take out their rage on the societal institutions they perceive ganged up to deny him his rightful place at the head of our government. The vitriol and violence has been simmering for a long time, I don’t think we’re going to get through this election without a serious attack on elected Democrats, members of the press, and possibly even Republicans who are didn’t support him.

This has been mentioned a time or two. I think it came up after Trump got in a pissing match with an actual billionaire (I think Bloomberg). Trump shows up for charity events, eats the nice food, has his picture taken with actual billionaires, doesn’t chip in for the charity.

Of course, because the polite aristocratic society still behaves on some of the old rules, they can’t stop inviting the short-fingered vulgarian, because that would be rude of THEM.

And THAT is why Wall Street is giving so much to Hillary and nothing to The Donald [tm], not because its a straight bribe, or even that it buys access, but because they are getting EPIC LOLZ at Trump’s expense. That worries me as well. I am an elected Democrat.

Hence my decision to get rid of my Gold Star Family license plates. The only other problem is my very-recognisable car, and that everyone in the county knows where I live.

A comment over at Huffington Post on Hillary Clinton’s speech in Reno.

I am aware that anyone can claim they are anything on the Internet, but this has the feeling of righteous indignation by a sane female Republican party supporter.

I am a senior, a veteran, and a white college graduate. And I am vehemently opposed to the KKK, Neo-Nazi, and any other white supremacy group out there. I was a Republican for nearly 40 years, but I am so disgusted by Trump after that Nazi Rally (aka Republican Nation Convention) he ran I will definitely vote a straight Democratic ticket in the upcoming election, and from now on.

If the GOP wants to turn in the fourth Reich, they will do it without me. First of all there is nothing Clinton can be accused of that will make Trump sane or for that matter even sound like he is sane. The GOP knows that and so do the Democrats. His outburst have just gotten worse so I don’t care who runs Trump’s campaign, and screw WikiLeaks, screw “October surprise” and screw Assange.

This whole campaign illustrates the need for a far better mental health care system in this country. I mean that. Happy and well adjusted people don’t behave like this. They just don’t. It’s something that needs treatment. In Trump’s case I sometimes wonder if his issues come from abuse as a kid. Abuse and then being bought off with things or sent away to schools. No way to know that for sure, but that stuff comes from somewhere. As for the people who seem to love his hate, something is seriously wrong there too. We really do need an entire system overhaul, healthcare, mental health care, and throw in dental and vision too. There’s no reason any of those things should be considered separate since a person’s total health depends on all of them.

Trying to get my daughter and grandkids home has made me kind of introspective lately. So much could be fixed if we could just stop all this damned time wasting infighting and useless shit.

i think she has goals. and power isnt one of them. results are (ok power is part of it)

and i think she has an advantage going into the white house that obama maybe didnt. she has way more experience with understanding the levers of government and all the players. and she is/was an official “diplomat’. that says something for negotiation

Donald Trump’s new presidential campaign chief is registered to vote in a key swing state at an empty house where he does not live, in an apparent breach of election laws.

Stephen Bannon, the chief executive of Trump’s election campaign, has an active voter registration at the house in Miami-Dade County, Florida, which is vacant and due to be demolished to make way for a new development.

“I have emptied the property,” Luis Guevara, the owner of the house, which is in the Coconut Grove section of the city, said in an interview. “Nobody lives there … we are going to make a construction there.” Neighbors said the property had been abandoned for several months.

Bannon, 62, formerly rented the house for use by his ex-wife, Diane Clohesy, but did not live there himself. Clohesy, a Tea Party activist, moved out of the house earlier this year and has her own irregular voting registration arrangement. According to public records, Bannon and Clohesy divorced seven years ago.

On top of the reports that he engaged in domestic violence with his former wife, there’s now reports indicating that he may have violated Florida election law by claiming a Florida address that was a vacant property.

That leads to still another issue - namely whether Bannon used the Florida address to try and avoid taxes in other states, such as CA. If he did that, then he’s in a world of hurt from those taxing authorities. The California Franchise Tax Board doesn’t take kindly to tax evasion.

That’s the kind of thing that leads you to jail time and significant fines.

And since he’s also worked in NYC/NYS, there’s the possibility of tax evasion there as well.

Trump certainly knows how to pick the best people. All of them.

But again, I still keep coming back to the point where happy and well adjusted humans don’t do that.

I worked with little kids as a preschool teacher for a few years and I ran an afterschool program for K-5 at that time. The stuff we’re talking about here is learned behavior. Either by modeling other adults or as a result of trauma of some kind. I’m sure some people are born with brain chemistry issues, but this is different.

While those jobs were stressful, kid wrangling is difficult, I loved that shitty paying job. Because every day I had little people happy to see me and ready to do something new and fun and follow their curiosity. The “problem children” we had were few in number and all of them had been through something traumatic. I’m not an expert but it seems to me that if you revel in the suffering and misfortune of others, if hate makes you excited and seemingly fulfilled, if you actively try to tear down what others worked hard to build, then you need help. That we have so many people like this is not just mental health related, but it’s a cultural/societal thing that runs deep and will take a long time to work through. I think a key is going to be those of us brave enough to make a stand and say it’s enough and we’re not buying that shit anymore. There’s an extreme to that too, we cannot shelter and protect ourselves and those we love from every bad thing, but we can make better choices and just live what we want the best we can.

And again, I’m back to introspection. Seeing my daughter and my grandkids living in hopelessness and poverty has had a definite effect on my entire worldview.

Her speech yesterday may signal the one thing she can do that Obama couldn’t: Make a speech to the American people to drive policies.

She didn’t have to make that speech yesterday. In fact, we were all thinking she needed to defend the Clinton Foundation. Instead, the speech she gave not only changed the conversation, but it is still the topic we need to be discussing in this country. She did it with facts, and in the process shined a halogen stadium light on the white supremacy in Trump’s campaign and in America.

I think she’s a lot less afraid of talking to Americans about what is going on. She may be an introvert like a lot of us, but I think she knows that sometimes the only way to solve a problem is to get in front of everyone.

I also have read that Obama was very invested in re-invigorating the separation of powers, as a constitutional lawyer/professor and from personal preference, and tried very hard to get the legislature to initiate things. It drove me crazy, for example, during the long drawn-out health care initiative.

I suspect Clinton has less interest in getting things done the “right way” and more in just getting things done. Which would be troubling for the republic if the legislature had shown any interest in doing their jobs the past few years…

I’m just sick of 40 Senators, representing 10% of the population, being able to block anything from getting done. There are what, 435 Congressmen, apportioned by population to the nearest integer. Each state has two Senators, so there should be 830 votes. A Senator from Montana gets one vote, a Senator from California gets 55, and so on.

Then eliminate those two unearned Electoral votes from each state and we might have a functioning democracy.

Here in NJ, the NJSEA was still paying off the Giants Stadium debt bill even after it was demolished following the building of the new MetLife stadium. And that’s one of the most successful stadiums due to location, size, and concert events over the course of the year.

Most other stadiums don’t get the use to justify that kind of investment by a municipality. Subsidizing stadiums is a losing proposition.

So, did anyone watch Morning Joke interview Hillary?

I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I’m all burnt out on the media. I did catch Chuck Todd on The Today Show and he and Nicole were both so bummed the election is headed to the bottom with all the hurling racists back and forth at each other.

My my my…so much hurt of butt.

I saw Chuck on MorningJoke & the main thing I noticed was his continual interruption of Andrea Mitchell - no woman was going to intrude on his talking time.

I also watched Hillary - well actually I listened - despite saying all morning that the interview was “live”, Hillary was on the phone. She removed any doubt that she will win every debate regardless as to who might be the moderator. Mica tutting about the negatives of the emails and the foundation didn’t phase her at all. Joe was unsuccessful at interrupting her.

Trump is now trying to work out how to get out of the debates.

When Donald Trump visits Cincinnati, he talks about his work as a twentysomething at a Bond Hill apartment complex - but he doesn’t talk about what went wrong there.

Trump helped his father manage Swifton Village, a location now called the Villages of Daybreak, after the elder Trump bought it in 1962. Fred Trump bought the vacancy-riddled property for $5.7 million, turned it around and filled it with renters, then sold it in 1972 for a profit, according to reports in The Enquirer archives. Donald Trump boasted about the success of the investment in “The Art of the Deal.”

He didn’t mention a 1970 lawsuit that accused Fred Trump’s company of racial discrimination as it decided who could rent the apartments.

Bond Hill was a predominantly white neighborhood as late as 1970, as was the 1,200-unit apartment complex. In 1969, an African-American stock clerk at General Electric Aircraft Engines applied for an apartment and was told there were no vacancies. A white couple sent in by Housing Opportunities Made Equal did find a vacancy, and the stock clerk sued under the federal Fair Housing Act.

The Trumps’ company never admitted discrimination and settled the suit by giving the stock clerk an apartment, according to a Los Angeles Times review of Trump-related housing discrimination suits.

I’ve been trying to track down more information about the Swifton Village thing for more than a month now. I remember when it was happening (and there is lots more to this), but there’s very little to find online about it. Wishing I lived closer to Cincinnati so I could dive into the archives at the Cincinnati library.

Byrd once again was praised across the aisle. His home state is now one of the few states that Trump can said to have a safe lead in. The man was a racist for a lot of his early career in the Senate but to his credit, he did change and express regret. When did Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms ever express any sort of regret for using racism in politics. The two may not have been known KKK members like Byrd was but they especially Helms who as recently as 1993 bragged about wanting to make an African-American colleague (Carol Mosely Braun) cry by whistling Dixie to her never expressed any regret. Robert Byrd was a flawed man but unlike many conservatives on race from his era, he actually had the guts to admit that he was wrong. Jesse Helms died the man who once called the University of North Carolina the University of Nergros and Communists. Strom Thurmond took his sexual abuse of a young African-American woman to the grave. Oh and Trump has not only white supremacists backing him but advising him like Bannon. Dinesh and friends can cry all they want about Byrd but Byrd showed the capacity to grow. Something they’ll never do.

The ATF Issues Warning of More IEDs in Trail Cameras

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Kentucky State Police Post 10 have issued a warning that IEDs have been found in Harlan County.

Back in June, OutdoorHub published an article about officials investigating explosive rigged game cameras in Kentucky.

The public safety advisory, issued Monday, warns that some of the trail cameras were found abandoned on paths in rural areas near the Dave Smith Drainage Area, on the Little Black Mountain Spur in Harlan County.

The big problem which has been depressing GDP growth and wages has been the aging of the Baby Boomers out of the work force. Individuals have been experiencing decent wage growth of about 3%, but its been masked because high wage retirees are being replaced by younger workers who naturally are earning lower wages at the start of their careers.

Upthread someone asked about who had seen the Morning Joke Hillary segment. I not only saw the original, but saw it repeated about every 10 minutes on every morning show on MSNBC, then switched to CNN and they were playing it repeatedly as well—when they weren’t showing the clip of Anderson Cooper and Trump on an endless loop.

Joe kept trying to interrupt Hillary (uh, uh, umm) but she was having none of it. Then when Mika was on, you could tell that she was not listening to a single word Hillary was saying—just pursing her lips, rolling her eyes and getting ready to talk again. At one point, Mika rolled her eyes “heavenward” till I thought they would never return.

Hillary pretty much repeated what was in her speech yesterday, and Squint and the Meatpuppet (t/y Charles Pierce) brought nothing to the party.

I hardly ever watch daytime TV, and now I know why. They repeat the same damn crap every 15 minutes and add nothing new to the story, which generally isn’t even a broadcast worthy story to begin with.

Please let’s not confuse three asshole mayors with whole cities.

Yeah, the interview with the white male mayor of one of those cities I saw yesterday, with him saying essentially that he had the right to tell women how much clothing they were allowed to wear, provided some great optics for the whole thing.

Not voting is better than voting for Johnson, because it would allow Clinton to win >50% of all votes easier. I’ll take Johnson if they have to vote.

His idea that he could tell women that wear too much on the beach was … Interesting. Especially since the BBC radio woman was a Muslim and she kept saying, in effect, “you’re an idiot, I’m Muslim, and you’re wrong”

I have imagined a scenario in which I might vote for Johnson. If he takes off in Kentucky and is within the margin of error with Trump but Clinton is a distant third, I could see trying to deny Kentucky’s electoral votes to Trump by voting for Johnson. But that is a pretty unlikely scenario.

Upthread someone asked about who had seen the Morning Joke Hillary segment. I not only saw the original, but saw it repeated about every 10 minutes on every morning show on MSNBC, then switched to CNN and they were playing it repeatedly as well—when they weren’t showing the clip of Anderson Cooper and Trump on an endless loop.

Joe kept trying to interrupt Hillary (uh, uh, umm) but she was having none of it. Then when Mika was on, you could tell that she was not listening to a single word Hillary was saying—just pursing her lips, rolling her eyes and getting ready to talk again. At one point, Mika rolled her eyes “heavenward” till I thought they would never return.

Hillary pretty much repeated what was in her speech yesterday, and Squint and the Meatpuppet (t/y Charles Pierce) brought nothing to the party.

I hardly ever watch daytime TV, and now I know why. They repeat the same damn crap every 15 minutes and add nothing new to the story, which generally isn’t even a broadcast worthy story to begin with.

That was me that asked. I figured it would go about the way you explained.

I do not understand the appeal of Morning Joke. I admit I sometimes watch the first half hour (20 minutes of face time) to get what the whole days conservo talking points are going to be.

It is a mess of a show, with Joke talking over and around everyone. Mika getting run over by everyone and yet acting like she has so much to say when she looks in that camera and says “The Republican Party should disown Trump right now! You’re party is dying and you need to save it.” for the 1,000th time only to have Joe half agree and then laugh at her.

It’s like the political geek college party for people that barely remember college.

Hmmm. Maybe that is the appeal.
