And here we were being told that the Obama/Clinton/Kerry admin cabal coddles IS, is basically sold out to Muslims, and looks the other way. That’s a pretty odd way to coddle - with Hellfire.

It was unclear what force might have been behind his death, however. In the northern part of Aleppo Province, near the Turkish border, the Islamic State is currently under attack by long list of antagonists: directly by Turkish, American and Russian airstrikes, by American- and Turkish-backed Syrian rebels, and by American-backed Kurdish rebels and their Arab allies.

Heh. Your comment just reminded me…I never did get a response from Chris Cillizza when I sent him an email asking why the Clinton emails were such a big thing when all it came down to was 3 emails, 2 excused by FBI head Comey and the last one in question and none of them sent to anyone outside the State Department.

I guess these “journalist” do not like anyone asking them questions or taking them to task for their BS.

Sirota did the same for a while but I like reading his stuff and appealed to his greater sensibilities and got unblocked. I still disagree with him at times, but I like that he’s not afraid to call out any political figure - that’s his job as a journalist. I don’t consider Todd to be a journalist. Visiting Muir Woods with my brother (no, not that one. The other one) years ago, we saw a recently-downed redwood. The whole core of the tree was charcoal. Old charcoal. There was a surpringly small amount of unburned wood there.

My guess was that the bark of redwoods is at least somewhat flame resistant, but the wood itself isn’t, so if there was a small hole through which the fire could gain access to the wood, it might burn, but leave the tree standing.

Anyway, it’s a hypothesis.

It’s much more fun watching from a distance.

I’ve been outside in a really heavy rainfall, the kind that puts down > 1”/hour. I was riding my bike. I thought I could get a ride in before it hit.

Nope.

I was 8 miles from home when it hit, so much rain that within 1/2 mile, the water was sloshing back and forth in my shoes as I pedaled. Got home, watched the creek behind my house rise 6’ within an hour. Luckily, there’s a flood control dam upstream so it didn’t get any higher.

That’s another round of commutations, and Obama has now commuted the sentences of more people than his predecessors - combined.

White House Counsel Neil Eggleston said the commutations underscored the president’s commitment to using his clemency authority to give deserving individuals a second chance. He said that Obama has granted a total of 673 commutations, more than the previous 10 presidents combined. More than a third of the recipients were serving life sentences.

Nyet  Aug 30, 2016 • 1:27:05pm

You remember how someone was trying to press Trump to reveal the details of how exactly he was going to deal with crime on the streets, and Trump didn’t reveal any details?

Well, I think he was thinking more in line with that anarcho-capitalist icon, Murray Rothbard:

Take Back the Streets: Crush Criminals. And by this I mean, of course, not “white collar criminals” or “inside traders” but violent street criminals - robbers, muggers, rapists, murderers. Cops must be unleashed, and allowed to administer instant punishment, subject of course to liability when they are in error.

In fact, the whole program reads like Trump’s platform:

A right-wing populist program, then, must concentrate on dismantling the crucial existing areas of State and elite rule, and on liberating the average American from the most flagrant and oppressive features of that rule. In short:

l. Slash Taxes. All taxes, sales, business, property, etc., but especially the most oppressive politically and personally: the income tax. We must work toward repeal of the income tax and abolition of the IRS.

2. Slash Welfare. Get rid of underclass rule by abolishing the welfare system, or, short of abolition, severely cutting and restricting it.

3. Abolish Racial or Group Privileges. Abolish affirmative action, set aside racial quotas, etc., and point out that the root of such quotas is the entire “civil rights” structure, which tramples on the property rights of every American.

5. Take Back the Streets: Get Rid of the Bums. Again: unleash the cops to clear the streets of bums and vagrants. Where will they go? Who cares? Hopefully, they will disappear, that is, move from the ranks of the petted and cosseted bum class to the ranks of the productive members of society.

6. Abolish the Fed; Attack the Banksters. Money and banking are recondite issues. But the realities can be made vivid: the Fed is an organized cartel of banksters, who are creating inflation, ripping off the public, destroying the savings of the average American. The hundreds of billions of taxpayer handouts to S&L banksters will be chicken-feed compared to the coming collapse of the commercial banks.

7. America First. A key point, and not meant to be seventh in priority. The American economy is not only in recession; it is stagnating. The average family is worse off now than it was two decades ago. Come home America. Stop supporting bums abroad. Stop all foreign aid, which is aid to banksters and their bonds and their export industries. Stop gloabaloney, and let’s solve our problems at home.

8. Defend Family Values. Which means, get the State out of the family, and replace State control with parental control. In the long run, this means ending public schools, and replacing them with private schools. But we must realize that voucher and even tax credit schemes are not, despite Milton Friedman, transitional demands on the path to privatized education; instead, they will make matters worse by fastening government control more totally upon the private schools. Within the sound alternative is decentralization, and back to local, community neighborhood control of the schools.

Further: We must reject once and for all the left-libertarian view that all government-operated resources must be cesspools. We must try, short of ultimate privatization, to operate government facilities in a manner most conducive to a business, or to neighborhood control. But that means: that the public schools must allow prayer, and we must abandon the absurd left-atheist interpretation of the First Amendment that “establishment of religion” means not allowing prayer in public schools, or a creche in a schoolyard or a public square at Christmas. We must return to common sense, and original intent, in constitutional interpretation.

Which will be never. What evidence would the Murray Rothbards possibly accept of cop-wrongdoing? They don’t accept any now.

Deer thrive in suburbs, where residents plant tasty plants and there are few predators apart from cars and trucks. And in many of those places, there’s no real possibility of hunting, because the houses are all too close for even bowhunting, let alone firearms.

Hell, even some rural areas are problematic! A friend invited me to hunt a farm on Maryland’s Eastern Shore where he has permission, and the place he had me set up gave me pause - I was in a low treestand overlooking a creekbed where a couple game trails crossed. But on the other side of the creek, above the bank? It was somebody’s back yard.

BTW, I happen to live in a suburb with lots of deer, AND predators. A Mountain Lion took down a deer, about a block away, down in the creekbed. It’s not quiet.

They were all moved onto Mar a Lago.

In all seriousness, I keep looking at statewide polls and the electoral college, and I really can’t see Trump’s path to 270. Clinton’s “safe” states puts her at 249 electoral votes. That means Trump must win Florida and Pennsylvania in every scenario. He also has to win one of Ohio or North Carolina. If he carries North Carolina and loses Ohio, he has to sweep Nevada, Arizona, Iowa, Missouri, Georgia, and New Hampshire. If he carries Ohio and loses North Carolina, then he can afford to lose New Hampshire (unless Nebraska splits its electoral votes, in which case it could be thrown to Congress).

Basically, as it stands, Trump has to win 8 or 9 of 10 swing states in this election, just to barely break 270. That’s asking a whole lot of an experienced politician, it’s probably impossible for Trump.

First statewide results in from the Florida primary.

Patrick Murphy is clobbering the field in the Democratic Senate primary with 63% of the vote. Alan Grayson is a distant third and not far ahead of fourth at 11%. (By way of comparison, Rubio’s at 67% on the Republican side against three tomato cans.)

Eh, their models respond (sometimes overwhelmingly) to new information. They’ve been pretty consistently showing Clinton as at least a 2:1 favorite, and as high as a 4:1 favorite. The fact that it’s slipped a bit with some polls moving from Clinton +8 to Clinton +5 shouldn’t be a shock.

Ayeah, while Nate and the gang have said Hillary is not yet in a position to run down the clock, she’s remains in a very favorable position. I don’t like filtering out information that goes against what I want to happen, that’s how the GOP ends up with skewwwed polls and Karl Rove having a stroke live on television. Plus, Silver has been pretty good for a long enough time that I tend to trust his analysis, or at the very least his aggregation of data.

As for the state of the race, as I said above, I don’t see a viable path to victory for Trump. That doesn’t mean things can’t change, but if this was a football game, Clinton is up 24 midway through the second quarter - still a bit too early to switch to prevent defense and ball control offense.

163
Targetpractice  Aug 30, 2016 • 4:37:33pm

Look at it this way: The race at 538 has been tighter than it is now at several times in the last six months. But Trump has never had the lead, and he’s never had enough of the “swing states” to pose a serious threat to Hillary’s chances. Is it possible for him to still change that before November? Sure. But the clock is against him and he’s as hapless as the Washington Generals.

I’d say more like the middle of the third quarter, with the debates as his last real chance at turning the game around, barring an “October Surprise.” He has time on the clock, but no real strategy besides “keep throwing the ball and eventually we’ll score a touchdown.”

Republicans only come to the SF bay area to fundraise. Trump is finally doing something that is normal for a Republican candidate.

We’re everybody’s ATM. I suppose the local Republicans want to send some money out of state as we don’t even have a GOP senate candidate in the general election. Maybe he’ll do some fund raising up there? He did a fundraiser last evening a few miles from here (in conjunction with the RNC) minimum donation $25,000 and it was apparently sold out. The neighbors lined the street leading to the home where it was held with Hillary signs…

Sold out. Not a surprise. They may be outnumbered in CA, but there are lots of rich Republicans out here that will chip in 25k+ to the Trump dumpster fire just to piss off liberals. This is pretty much the main form of political expression they have these days.

re: #53 Blind Frog Belly White

Visiting Muir Woods with my brother (no, not that one. The other one) years ago, we saw a recently-downed redwood. The whole core of the tree was charcoal. Old charcoal. There was a surpringly small amount of unburned wood there.

My guess was that the bark of redwoods is at least somewhat flame resistant, but the wood itself isn’t, so if there was a small hole through which the fire could gain access to the wood, it might burn, but leave the tree standing.

Anyway, it’s a hypothesis.

I saw this post earlier, but wasn’t in a place where I could answer it.

The core of a redwood tree is dead wood. The living part is a comparatively thin skin of live wood, and then, of course, the bark on the outside. So the core burns more easily, being dry wood, and the tree can survive a core fire.

(I was told this by a park ranger — a much more reliable source than the internets.)

The two researchers first inferred the possible existence of Planet Nine back in 2014, after analyzing the highly elliptical orbits of the dwarf planet Sedna and a new object they spotted, known as 2012 VP113 (and nicknamed “Biden”).

If deer come into your backyard, can you trap them?

First - No, not legally.

Second - How? Leghold traps are likely to cause injury, and releasing a large animal that can literally kill you from a trap is dangerous.

Third - then what? What do you do with the deer once you’ve trapped it? Take it somewhere and leave it? That would be REALLY expensive!! And given the number of deer in some of the places with the worst problem, not very effective. And anywhere you take them, the local deer population is probably already at or above carrying capacity.

Ah.

I was going to say that all the most reasonable solutions involve killing a number of deer and of course not wasting the tasty meat. And if you’re gonna control a population - sorry girls - but it’s the DOES you want to remove.

A number of states with out of control deer populations will let you take as many as one doe A DAY for the entire hunting season, but only a limited number of mature bucks. But meat hunters prefer the does, anyway.

Often, however, suburban dwellers object to hunting, and want the local government to hire sharpshooters to kill the deer. Not sure how that’s any better, especially if the meat is wasted! I’m sure the deer don’t notice the difference.

A few years ago, there was a deer over-population problem in Rock Creek Park. They couldn’t allow ordinary people to hunt them, since it’s in the middle of Washington DC and stray bullets could go anywhere. Also, they get squeamish about high-powered rifles in that neighborhood.

They had army snipers kill a bunch of them, butcher them, and the local food banks and soup kitchens ended up with several tons of high-quality red meat (super-lean! no added hormones or antibiotics!)

Which is much better than how NYC handled their too-many-geese problem. They spread poisoned feed, killed more than enough, but it made them unsafe to eat.

First, how big is your yard? and how close is the nearest neighbor? If it’s big enough, you might be able to hunt there. MAYBE.

BUT, your choice of weapons is regulated by the state, and the days on which you can use each is also regulated. I’m almost certain that trapping a deer and then having it dispatched by cutting it’s throat is not legal.

Daughter1 and her freezer probably make venison about 1/3 of her family’s red meat. She has moved up from a .30 carbine, and also has a working relationship with the local deer processor. She ‘redeems’ defaulted carcasses—a surprising number of hunters stick the processor.
