Former Mexican President Vicente Fox to Trump: “Stop Lying!”

Trump’s Mexican stunt
Politics • Views: 51,199

By now I assume you’ve heard that the Republican Party’s alt-right presidential candidate is on his way to Mexico for a meeting with President Enrique Peña Nieto.

You may recall that back in March, Nieto likened Trump to Hitler and Mussolini. And Donald Trump has been emitting a steady stream of anti-Hispanic bigotry from the very start of his campaign.

So this ought to be… interesting. Josh Marshall thinks it’s going to be an outright shitshow, and the Mexican press and public are absolutely furious, which isn’t surprising.

And former Mexican president Vicente Fox had some words for Trump on Twitter this morning as well.

Will it be boring and bland, or will there be fireworks between Nieto and Trump? Only time will tell, but given the reaction in Mexico to Trump’s visit, Nieto has to be feeling some pressure to give Trump hell. And Trump has to look like a tough guy for his crazed Breitbart audience and his own egomania. So even though I know this a stunt born out of desperation, I’ll be watching.

UPDATE at 8/31/16 11:06:36 am by Charles Johnson

The weirdness continues, as word leaks out that Trump isn’t taking any of his usual media camp followers along.

Charles Pierce explains the obvious to us. Too bad the media doesn’t do obvious.

If you ignore the fact that Trump has now completely abandoned almost every principle and position that helped him win the Republican nomination for president, and if you ignore the fact that he’s squeezing in the visit between California fundraisers and his big immigration speech in Arizona—so it’s unlikely there’s going to be much time for serious violations of the Logan Act—this is a spectacular piece of campaign vaudeville designed to fool not the rubes in the country who are going to vote for him anyway, and not even the mushy Republicans who are seeking some reason—any reason!—to vote for their party’s nominee, although they’re important, too.

No, it’s primarily aimed at the suckers in the elite political press, some of whom, I guarantee you, will fall for this malarkey because…optics! He has a gift for dominating the news cycle! And all this on a day in which ABC and the Post are tootling the call to the post because of their new poll showing that Hillary Rodham Clinton is as unpopular as Trump is among likely voters. Whee, kids! As Fred Caposella used to say, the crowd is moving closer to the rail and that can mean only one thing—it is now post time!

Trump Flies To Mexico, Trump’s Traveling Press Corps Left Behind In America

The Trump campaign’s decision to leave their press behind is inconsistent with campaign manager Kellyanne Conway’s claim that a joint press conference she said Trump would hold with Peña Nieto during the trip should be looked at “in direct contrast” to Hillary Clinton. (It was later reported that Trump was “not expected to take questions in Mexico, despite his campaign manager insisting this morning he would.)”

According to Politico’s Hadas Gold, “reporters were ‘seething’” on a call with the Trump campaign because “the campaign is leaving the press behind on its big trip to Mexico on Wednesday”.

Sorry, but presidential isn’t just from photo ops. It’s from how you act and what you say.

And Trump can never act presidential. He will never sound presidential, and that’s a fact.

I’m really hoping that Trump doesn’t bring the necessary papers with him to actually travel there legally and that this is a trick by Nieto. They arrest and jail Trump as soon as he steps off the plane. How epic would that be. But alas. I think Nieto is just trying to kiss Trump’s ass so he can call in favors when he’s no longer in charge after 2018.

29
Eclectic Cyborg  Aug 31, 2016 • 11:26:19am

Trump will probably just have someone from the campaign take photos and do a writeup so he can completely control the message.

I wonder if Trump has enough sense to let the pilots and the 757’s elaborate equipment do the navigating.

As an old man, he probably has his own sure-fire shortcut to Mexico City.
It is almost a law of nature that every old man has a double secret only-he-knows-it-shortcut for every journey known to be possible on the surface of the Earth (and possibly elsewhere for all I know).

Under no circumstances should you allow yourself to try one of these geriatric shortcuts.

Back in the 70s, when I worked for the armored car company, I had a replacement guard one day who must have been at least as old as I am now. He had a surefire shortcut through the wilds of darkest north Texas.

Naive as I was, I allowed myself to be persuaded. We ended up hopelessly lost, and had to radio the highway patrol to figure out where we were and guide us back to what passes for civilization in those regions. (You can’t just stop at a farmhouse and ask directions when you have a couple of million dollars of someone else’s money on you, especially since I had seen Deliverance only recently.)

We were two hours late, a source of considerable concern to the fatcats who owned that pile we were carrying, and hence to our boss.

Trump’s Mexico City itinerary, per the NY Times:

Larry Rubin, the president of an organization of Republican Party members who live in Mexico, and a member of the delegation that will join Mr. Trump at the presidential palace, provided some details about Mr. Trump’s day in Mexico City:

— The meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Peña Nieto is scheduled to start by 3 p.m. local time (4 p.m. Eastern time) and last for approximately 50 minutes. The Mexican president, who will be joined by his foreign minister, is expected to speak English at the meeting.

— Mr. Trump will focus on the positive, Mr. Rubin said, seeing the meeting as the start of a dialogue about shared economic interests and security interests. Mr. Rubin said he believed Mr. Trump would only briefly mention his intention to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and to get Mexico to pay for it — a deeply offensive proposal to many Mexicans.

— Mr. Trump will depart Mexico City by 5:30 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. Eastern) en route to Phoenix to deliver his immigration speech.

re: #101 Sir John Barron

So the usual 4 dinosaurs voted to reinstate the restrictions. Good to know.

Also, still need to watch what the county election boards do, as the NYT reported today, they’re packed with GOP and screwing around.

Asshats. NC GOP couldn’t be more clear about their racial bias.

Give me President HRC and 51 senators, and she can go to the Hamptons for the whole of her terms.

So, the SPLC declared that “White Lives Matter” is a hate-group. The most vocal take on this I keep hearing?

That SPLC is the real hate group, defending the most worstest racist group in the history of ever (of course, “Black Lives Matter”) and showing its absolute hatred of white people.

God, I hate the internet somedays, and it’s only the fact that I know it’s mostly the internet that helps perpetuate this hot take keeps me from hating people as a whole.

Quick reminder to Charles et al. as this thread winds its way down: when you’re dealing with most Hispanic names, to just say “President Nieto” on second reference is not correct. His surnames, plural, are “Pena Nieto” (paternal and maternal), and so you’d properly call him either “Peña” or “Peña Nieto.”

Or at least that’s what some are saying…

Trump surrogate compares todays visit to Mexico with Nixon going to China. Do these idiots not even understand that Mexico is an ally?

It won’t be if DT becomes President.
