This guy
What’s most upsetting about Trump, to me, is that no matter what fucking stupid thing he does, his idiot followers lap it up. Look at what’s happening already with his utterly going back on “Round ‘em up, ship ‘em back”. Even the fucking white nationalists are convicnig themselves that he hasn’t screwed them.
And I don’t even want to think about the “independents” I know who are going to view this as Nixon going to China.
Every American with a conscience should be embarrassed beyond belief that this guy has gotten as far as he has.
Can’t wait for Peña Nieto to present Trump with the big novelty check!

Repost from downstairs:
Quick reminder to Charles et al. as this thread winds its way down: when you’re dealing with most Hispanic names, to just say “President Nieto” on second reference is not correct. His surnames, plural, are “Pena Nieto” (paternal and maternal), and so you’d properly call him either “Peña” or “Peña Nieto.”
Or at least that’s what some are saying…
re: #8 Kragar
Agreed, and the beauty part is, according to news reports, neither Nieto or his admin expected Trump to take them up on their offer. For instance, the foreign minister had to rush home from Wisconsin, after opening a new consulate yesterday in Madison.
And now, he’s essentially reversing Trump’s rhetoric, fingering the United States for allowing arms to come over into Mexico.

re: #95 blueraven
I think a lot of that will depend on his speech in AZ. I had thought this trip to Mexico was to take attention away from that because he’s likely to somewhat soften his stance on immigration (anything less than a gestapo force rounding up undocumented families will be anathema to his supporters) at that speech tonight. He wanted THIS to be the story, not the speech.

I still expect a Trump meltdown at some point. For the media and their horse race (which is understandable since they need higher ratings to make more money on ad buys), a meltdown would be good for business, just not this early. Nobody talks about the football game where the quarterback throws 5 interceptions before half time while the other team runs up the score… but the game where the quarterback throws three straight interceptions in the fourth quarter and a 21-21 games goes to 42-21? That’s a story.

Is there any law that says that Trump has to come back to the USA?
The night Trump tied up the nomination, he gave the second or third of the “OMG! HE’S PIVOTING!!!” speeches, and one of the commenters summed him up succinctly - there are only two Trumps, Crazy Trump, and Boring Trump. Whenever he tries to not be crazy Trump, he’s completely uninteresting. And when he tries to be interesting, he’s crazy.
That’s really all there is, and it is also true on the policy front - he’s either sspeaking clearly about a batch of completely crazy, stupid, racist policies, or he’s making a complete muddled hash of them. At no point does he ever articulate a moderate position. He just uses weasel words that cause people to ask if he’s softening, till someone pins him down and asks him - or he’s talking to one of his rallies - and he goes back to crazy.

Repeated because I keep seeing ‘Nieto’ alone. Not always by lizards….
Now watch as Trump gives his “big immigration speech” in Phoenix and raves like a bigoted lunatic. Much presidential!
— Charles Johnson (@Green_Footballs) August 31, 2016
Week 1: *Trump raves like a nutter*
Media: “Well yes, this is all very disconcerting, but Hillary won’t hold a press conference so we’ll obsess over a nontroversy to ‘balance’ the election coverage.”
Week 2: *Trump mumbles like he’s on Ambien*
Media: “Wow, look how presidential he sounds! He got through the speech without foaming at the mouth! That’s who we need in office!”
Other thing in Trump statement in Mexico: Said he wants to keep industry “in our hemisphere.” Not our country. Prez of northern hemisphere?

My impulse is, for the sake of brevity, or fewer capital letters maybe, to say “Peña” alone, but I wasn’t sure it was proper.
You know that if Hillary gave a speech like the one Trump just gave in Mexico everyone would be like OMG SHE’S BRAIN DEAD #tcot #UniteBlue

Just option + n, n for me.
The same media which has for months played up Trump as a guy who “says it like it is” is now making excuses for Trump making every effort to tip-toe around every single spittle-flecked mine he’s laid down between the US and Mexico.
We are not presently at war with Mexico as a result of Trump’s visit. The main stream media will try to spin this as some kind of great achievement for Trump.

Yeah, but the media’s news cycle lasts a week at the most, so this “pivot” will be hailed as the start of the “presidential” Trump. We can simply forget about all the shit he’s said for the past year, this is the Trump we’ve been waiting for, the guy who’s gonna buckle down and be like all those other candidates we’ve seen before.
Marshall’s quick take makes a lot of sense.
Third is I think the big thing, what we’ll remember about this in a week and a month: given the opportunity, Drumpf didn’t even discuss who would pay for his border wall let alone demand that Mexico do so. I strongly suspect that will be the big takeaway for Drumpf and that it will not wear will. Drumpf’s line throughout this campaign has been that he’ll tell Mexico to pay for the wall and Mexico will. In a face to face meeting with the actual Mexican President, even one as pliant as this, he was unwilling to do so.
Drumpf’s brand is “dominance politics.” He’s toured the country for a year telling crowds that Mexico will pay. He’ll make them. And yet, when given the opportunity to sit down with the President of Mexico, he didn’t bring it up? There are words for that kind of person, just not words that are any longer acceptable today. For the moment Drumpf is the paradoxical beneficiary of “political correctness.”
If he can’t stand up to an unpopular Mexican president, how will he stand up to Putin?

Rather than pretend that Trump is going to do a non-exixtent pivot, the MSM would be more gainfully employed by researching Scottish insults for Trump and elaborating on that theme.
.@KellyannePolls tells me Trump’s immigration speech tonight will be “very lengthy” and “very far-reaching.”

Compelling Mexico to Pay for the Wall
Introduction: The provision of the Patriot Act, Section 326 - the “know your customer” provision, compelling financial institutions to demand identity documents before opening accounts or conducting financial transactions is a fundamental element of the outline below. That section authorized the executive branch to issue detailed regulations on the subject, found at 31 CFR 130.120-121. It’s an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion to ensure that $24 billion continues to flow into their country year after year. There are several ways to compel Mexico to pay for the wall including the following:
Peña Nieto is enormously unpopular, we’re told—it seems like Mexican Presidents are always enormously unpopular. So how do these guys keep getting elected? The PRI just throws them up and they’re not allowed to lose?

So, it looks like the rest of this election could be a contest between our collective memory and the media’s attention span.

One of the main reasons that I’m not a conservative anymore is that I remember future tea baggers (e.g., Hannity), who now claim to love the Constitution, saying that it wasn’t Congress’s job to declare war (authorize military force) against Iraq.

We’re talking a media that sat watching an empty podium in anticipation of a Trump speech while ignoring a live speech that Hillary was giving. That lets Trump call in his “interviews” but insists it will only be satisfied if Hillary consents to a press conference. And will cover Trump unfiltered but only covers Hillary in soundbytes.
This whole “pivot” is Ailes handy work and he knows how to play the media like a harp from Hell. He’s capitalizing on their short attention span to convince them that Trump has changed, he’s suddenly become that “moderate” the media loves, while Hillary is still a liar and a cheat.

re: #129 The Vicious Babushka
What happened at the press conference that would cause polls to change so dramatically in Trump’s favor? All he did was read from notes and looked bored while EPN spoke. This one speech doesn’t erase all of the bigotry Trump has spewed over the last year.

That’s all he has to do. Trump could set one of his hotels on fire to collect the insurance money and the media would become bored with the story after 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Trump surrogates go on the media and make all kinds of claims against Hillary, all of which the media feels it has an obligation to investigate and keep alive.
Like all Internet Tough Guys, Trump said a lot of shit online that he didn’t have the balls to say IRL. If we’re electing presidents based upon their online personas, there’s guys on Youtube I’d vote for before I’d ever vote for Trump.

As Josh Marshall has noted, Trump is all about “dominance politics.” Being the one in control of the narrative and making others kneel before him. Now he’s record as backing down from Mexico while Mexico calls him a liar. He’ll have to find some way to reassert his dominance or else risk losing face with his fans.
