Hispanic Trump Surrogates Bailing Out After “Mass Deportation” Speech in Phoenix

Politics • Views: 44,399

By now it’s no secret that Donald Trump’s “outreach” to African Americans and Hispanics isn’t working; his poll numbers with these groups remain abysmally low. In the latest survey by Public Policy Polling, Trump’s approval rating among African Americans currently stands at approximately zero.

Yes, I said “zero.”

And after his extremist anti-immigration rant last night, even his own campaign’s few Latino surrogates are starting to admit Trump’s outreach effort is a scam.

Jacob Monty, a member of Trump’s National Hispanic Advisory Council, quickly resigned after the speech. Another member, Ramiro Pena, a Texas pastor, said Trump’s speech likely cost him the election and said he’d have to reconsider being part of a “scam.” And Alfonso Aguilar, the president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, said in an interview that he is “inclined” to pull his support.

“I was a strong supporter of Donald Trump when I believed he was going to address the immigration problem realistically and compassionately,” said Monty, a Houston attorney who has aggressively made the Latino case for Trump. “What I heard today was not realistic and not compassionate.”

He withdrew from the board following Trump’s speech in Phoenix, which was heavy on calls for border security and emphasized that all immigrants in the country illegally were subject to deportation.

Pena delivered a harsh condemnation in an email to senior Trump and Republican National Committee leaders, obtained by POLITICO.

“I am so sorry but I believe Mr. Trump lost the election tonight,” said Pena, a pastor at Waco’s Christ the King Church. “The ‘National Hispanic Advisory Council’ seems to be simply for optics and I do not have the time or energy for a scam.”

Of course, Trump did solidify his support among one demographic group: White Supremacists Absolutely Loved Trump’s Anti-Immigrant Speech in Phoenix.

I really hope Trump suffers an epic loss in November. Let the GOP get destroyed so badly they’re calling for Reinces head on a silver platter.

Zero percent favourable support among blacks.

ZERO.

That’s got to be a political first.

There’s thinking that Trump might have a point, and then there’s finding out that’s why he combs his hair like that. Most everyone has the capacity to learn and change their mind.

Better late than never, but these Trump supporters were being willfully blind.

Trump won the GOP primary with his opening shot, which was the “Mexican rapists” crap. Anyone expecting anything from Trump other than offensive and crude pandering to bigots, xenophobes and nativist haters simply was not paying attention.

This. i mean I am sorry but what the hell were these people doing hedging their bets on Trump in the first place. It’s not like this is new territory for him. This is what got him nominated and this is what the GOP base wants out of its nominee on immigration. If more easier naturalization of immigrants is an issue of importance for you, you really shouldn’t be a Republican or supporting Republican candidates. They and their party don’t want that.

What kind of person thinks that Trump’s statements on Hispanics and Latino outreach meant that he was sincere in his outreach until now? There isn’t any. These people were deluding themselves until now, and that Trump’s speech yesterday made that abundantly clear shows that there’s some people who will buy anything Trump sells no matter how much BS he’s spewing. But there is a line that can be crossed with some.

Trump keeps finding that line - and crossing it.

That also explains why he’s polling behind 3d party candidates among African Americans these days.

The only group where Trump has consistent support is the white nationalist/bigot brigade vote.

Trump is certainly the worst I’ve ever seen in action, by far. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were major party presidential candidates that were worse, especially in the early part of the 20th century. Eugenics was broadly popular in the US then, and the immigration law passed in 1924 was a racist piece of crap.

No, I don’t think when you look at the whole package you can honestly say there’s ever been a worse person running for the presidency as head of one of the two major parties.

Trump is in a zone all by himself, and without the 24/7 support of all the media outlets he’d be running at 20% max.

I agree with you on the whole package point. My point was more that Trump’s brand of nativist xenophobia was probably mainstream early in the 20th century, so on that issue in isolation he might not be the “worst ever”.

re: #71 Sir John Barron

So I’ve read online, so it must be true. ///

Seriously though, the reality is that Trump’s worth is tied to real estate, and that his income is tied mostly to licensing deals for his name to be plastered on buildings that he isn’t building (others are building and branding them as Trump).

Being in real estate conveys certain tax advantages, but it means there’s little liquidity - because you’d need to sell or refinance to take money from those buildings (and real estate sales do become public knowledge).

That’s unlike Cuban and other known billionaires who have run publicly held corporations, etc. We can figure out their wealth portfolios more easily.

Trump’s probably leveraged up the ying yang and has little liquidity.

That’s the least bad thing to happen with the NYT in past week. Their atrocious coverage of Trump and Clinton takes the cake. Playing magical balance fairy between apples and unicorn farts is no way to provide anyone facts and news.

So, Trump was right. The Times is a failing paper that is just not any good anymore and deserves to go out of business. /

Or, did Trump scare them into this balancing problem as he made them fear he could affect them with his digs?

Strange times in American media. They are all struggling with their futures.*

Many people are saying that Trump’s net worth is actually zero.

I can’t remember were I read it now, but some time back, Trump went to Deutsche Bank to get a loan - he’s pretty much been blackballed by American banks as too much of a credit risk - and DB concluded he was only worth about $675 million or so.

From the article:

Then, the Trump Foundation told the IRS about a gift that did not exist.

The foundation told the IRS that it had given $25,000 to a third group, a charity in Kansas with a similar name, “Justice for All.” In fact, the Trump Foundation had not actually sent the Kansas group any money.

This new, incorrect listing had the effect of camouflaging the prohibited gift. Trump’s CFO said that the listing of the Kansas group was another mistake, made by the foundation’s accountants.

Yeah. A mistake? BS.

MrBWS just told me that he ran over a box of Trump signs on one of the interstates in Cincinnati today.
At the next off ramp was a rotund man wearing black shorts, black patent leather shoes, black socks and sock garters.
Said sadly dressed man was standing sadly next to a pickup truck filled with boxes of Trump signs that were previously held on board with (now broken) restraining straps.

Very sad….

The GOP has an enormous built-in advantage simply by being the party of the rich and powerful. That automatically normalizes just about any crazy shit they do, up to and including nominating a grotesquely unqualified fascist demagogue for president.

When this is combined with the complete failure of most in the media to do their jobs, the result is as we see.

Send the Sunday morning talk show pundits back in time and they’d be perfectly happy doing round tables on how best to implement the final solution. They’d roll over on cue and accept any demands for access to people like Heydrich, Himmler, Goebbels, etc.

You get the feeling that one campaign isn’t taking chances, and is working to help down ticket races. The other? Not so much.

There is a real chance, though small, that the Democrats could win control of the House and the Senate. That would be huge if the Democrats have the balls to abolish or severely restrict filibusters; it would give them two years to pass some badly needed legislation.

Milwaukee lawmaker thrown to ground by cops, arrested at scene of Sylville Smith shooting and violent unrest

A Wisconsin state lawmaker who was thrown to the ground and arrested Tuesday night at the scene of a fatal police shooting and violent unrest in Milwaukee said he was just trying to help.

Rep. Jonathan Brostoff went to the Sherman Park neighborhood at 10 p.m. after hearing of the arrests of approximately 10 people, he said. Residents had complained that 30 to 40 people gathered around 8 p.m. near the area where Sylville Smith, 23, was fatally shot by an officer earlier this month.

The 10 were busted for disorderly conduct and resisting an officer about two hours before Brostoff arrived.

Brostoff, a Milwaukee Democrat, said most of the crowd had left and he was talking with the people who remained when officers approached.

Exactly. Police Unions’ interests do not always mirror those of the civilian population. A classic example is in Dallas, where it was just announced today that Chief Brown is retiring. He had all the police association sniping at him earlier in the year, (community policing can be a strain on the rank and file) and I guess the pressure is just too great. Dallas will miss him.

He’s been on the force for 14 years. His chain of command obviously doesn’t give a shit.

The two civilians making a case of it now on Facebook are probably looking at harassment and/or hospital stays if they live in Philly.

Then why is everyone focused on the union, the one organization that is not supposed to get rid of him?

Those of our readers who have been Anti-Fascists for a few years may remember that during a period from 2010-2012 there were several successful hacks of Neo-Nazi websites that led to the identification of dozens of Neo-Nazis and White Nationalists.

One of the more interesting cases was that of Ian Hans Lichterman. Lichterman was listed as a member of Blood and Honour, an international network of Neo-Nazi organizations started by Ian Stuart Donaldson, the lead singer of Skrewdriver. Upon some investigating, it was discovered that Lichterman was also a Philly PD officer who had even recently been commended at a crime stoppers awards ceremony.

If I had to guess, it’s because the last couple years have caused many to look askance at police union officials for their perennial defense of any cop who shoots an unarmed person, no matter how unjustifiable?

IOW, they’ve pretty much used up all the sympathy anyone had for them.

Almost certainly not. The question is: Was he violating clearly published valid orders? If the PD doesn’t know how to run a PD, he slides and they have a bigger problem.

Most police departments have a general order book the size of War and Peace. There’s almost certainly a general order on tattoos and probably prohibits any tattoo that shows gang affiliation or are racist, sexist, etc.

That’s because most people who haven’t been in a union were never taught how union-management conflict works. Would you be sympathetic to a defense lawyer who sits down with the DA and decides his client is a scumbag that should hang?

I hear ya. It’s a conflicted mess. But there it is. Not nearly as serious a situation as we’re discussing now, but I always thought the players union would have been interested in seeing PEDs out of their game, for the good of the “clean” players. Not so much.

Another point can also be made here. Needlessly offensive advocacy on behalf of its members contributes to the withering away of unions in the US.

A certain level of political support is needed for unions to continue to exist, and I think it clear that this minimal level of support is not present in the US right now.

Given this background, unions really need to ensure they do their jobs in a way that doesn’t end up being self-destructive.

When asked about his vision for black Americans, the script suggests that Mr. Trump stay positive, advising that he use lines such as “If we are to make America great again, we must reduce, rather than highlight, issues of race in this country” and “I want to make race disappear as a factor in government and governance.”

So, basically continuing the pretense that there has been no effort to marginalize minorities; that’s all in the past.

There is a moral obligation for an advocate to consider both what is likely to work (or has worked before) and the damage to the community inherent in certain kinds of advocacy. E.g., a priori there is no justification for putting a child’s credibility on trial in a media circus, even though that might be helpful to the case of an accused child molester.

Similarly, it is completely unacceptable for an advocate to use the ‘gay panic’ defense in a murder case, even if that seems to be a good (or even the best) chance to get an acquittal.

In other words, advocates have to be held to a standard higher than ‘winning at all cost’.

It is possible that Trump’s effect on conservative people of color will end up making them not be conservatives at all in their futures. Trump is exposing the whole political outlook as a sham. The same could be true of conservative women.

Too true, as I witnessed in my own family.

I am 50 and from rural Arkansas. My father’s family has always been full of no-nonsense, rock-ribbed Republican men. But my maternal grandfather, PawPaw, was a staunch Democrat to the end of his days due to his experience with the area’s dominate Republican landowner during The Depression.

PawPaw had to drop out of school ~8 years old to feed the family during The Depression when his father was disabled by a stroke. PaPa was one of three children and his sacrifice also allowed his sister and mentally-disabled brother to stay in school.

Even though he was small for his age he once took a job picking cotton by hand with other young boys for the local Big Republican. This entailed dragging a canvas bag, up to 12’ foot long for adults, down the rows while picking the scratchy, dusty bolls in the hot sun. Workers were paid by the pound but the Big Republican would pay the kids less because he could get away with it. I am certain he was aware of PawPaw’s situation in such a small community.

PawPaw was furious and asked his Mom (his Dad could speak but a few words due to the stroke) what they should do. She told him to just accept it as they had to eat. Well, PawPaw and his crew of boys started fortifying their bags with rocks and it did not take long for Big Republican to figure this out. PawPaw got beaten by said Republican and voted Democratic the rest of his life.

He lived long enough to see Obama defeat Hillary for the nomination and was none too happy. He asked me what I thought about this n——r running for president. I assured him that the Clintons were on board and Obama would essentially leverage their resources and be a continuation of Bill’s and Hillary’s policies. “Well”, he said, “that’s good enough for me”.

In other words, advocates have to be held to a standard higher than ‘winning at all cost’.

As I said above, the union official can quit. The union can’t, or it flushes a hundred years of struggle.

Reminds me of my mom’s dad. Coal miner’s kid who ended up being a brick mason. He didn’t think much of Obama. He died during the time in between Bush and Obama becoming President. I like to think Obama would have grown on him like he did with my grandma. I really hope that Trump’s message wouldn’t have appealed to him since there are some things about some of Trump’s rhetoric that may have attracted him but OTOH, I do think he would have been pissed off about Trump’s attitude about war.

There’s a critical update to Safari out today - if you use Safari, go to App Store->Updates ASAP. This fixes a serious vulnerability that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code simply by having you visit a maliciously crafted website.

(OT) In our town, WOGL is playing the #1’s from their time (mid 60s to early 90s). Anyway, somehow, incredibly, the barking dogs “Jingle Bells” must have been a #1! They do it in alphabetical order, but I think chronological order would be far more interesting.

I was reading something the other day about how Christie was a driving force behind Capt. Stubby Hands’ Mexican Adventure.

My first reaction was that Christie knew it would be a bad idea and did it as revenge for Trump allowing his son-in-law to fuck up Christie’s place in the campaign.

Just a theory.

So I’m checking in on the Cal Fire site to see if there’s anything going on east of Redding where we’ll be next week and I realize I’m smelling smoke. Then I remember that Mr. C. has just gone out to light the grill. Neither sudden local wildfire or an overactive imagination.

I’m glad there is a logical explanation that does not involve the need for the fire department.

Hopefully.

It’s more “fun” than the controversy over who’s going to be the starting quarterback and the depressing realization for the local sports fans that the 49ers are going to suck again this year.

Neither do I. But it’s just another way the media is going to ignore the substance of what he’s saying. Now it’ll be that he’s not the starter because of this and not because they were seriously looking at starting whatever-the-hell-the-other-guy’s-name-is before this. And just. It’s all stupid. (For the record, I think he has a right to say what he wants to and I agree with his viewpoint that things need to improve.)

His canned answers are the usual horrific worthless shit==>

What would your administration do to bring down the racial tension that is in our Country? In the Bible Jesus said that a house divided cannot stand.

We have to reform our tax system so that we can spur economic growth for the long haul. We have to have stronger enforcement of immigration laws. We have to renegotiate our trade deals so that we can bring advantage back to the American workforce.

We must bring school choice programs to our cities and we must get rid of Common Core.

Mr. Trump what is your vision for America? And specifically Black America?

As for the Affordable Care Act, I will work to repeal the act and replace it with market driven solutions that will offer more access to healthcare at more affordable prices. Every American should be able to purchase health insurance across state lines, have health savings account that belong to them, have price transparency so they can shop for the best services at the best prices and know that they will not have to compete with those who are clogging the system simply because they are in this country illegally.

Yes, it is nice when a loved one rises above a prejudice; I was very proud of my Paw Paw. Unfortunately my Father, who is far more educated, ambitious and successful than he, has been poisoned by all the disgraceful, dishonest slander and attacks on Obama and the Clintons. Every stupid, ridiculous political email he forwards makes me sad for him and infuriated with the Fox-Republican Axis of Evil.

Hey, congratulations alleged “Conservatives”, at this point I can never, ever imagine voting Republican. If real moderates ever manage to wrest back control of your party, my now ingrained global distrust of your motives and honesty may well be an insurmountable barrier!
