I pulled out my handy dandy book of Molly Ivins columns after the last thread and found a quote that is apropos to this years race. After Pat Buchanan’s incendiary nativist speech at the 1992 R convention, and directly relating to Trump’s immigration speech last week, she opined that it “probably sounded better in the original German”.

Now *that* is trenchant commentary.

Ann died in August of 2006. Molly died in January of 2007. My State is poorer for their passing, and there have been no viable replacements for that kind of spunk and wit.

Duterte and Trump must have the same media playbook.

President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines has expressed regret for calling Barack Obama a “son of a whore” - a remark that led to the US leader cancelling their meeting during a regional summit in Laos.

In a statement read by his spokesman, Duterte said the remark was not intended as a personal insult. “While the immediate cause was my strong comments to certain press questions that elicited concern and distress, we also regret that it came across as a personal attack on the US president,” Ernesto Abella quoted Duterte as saying.

He added that a meeting with the US had been “mutually agreed upon to be moved to a later date”.

I remember a similarly ludicrous case some years ago (2002)

Can Bill Wyman be Bill Wyman? No, says Bill Wyman / Rock critic takes heat from rocker of same name

In October, after 41 years of using his birth name without incident, the film and music editor for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution learned that his employer had received a cease-and-desist from the attorney for Bill Wyman, former bassist for the Rolling Stones.
Journalist Bill Wyman was asked to cease and desist being Bill Wyman, “if indeed, (his) given legal name is Bill Wyman (a fact which we would insist be reasonably demonstrated to us),” according to the letter the paper received from attorney Howard Siegel of New York.”

Bear in mind that “Youth for Wallace,” the college group that supported the governor’s run for President became the National Alliance.

Now a lot of Trump supporters are already on the Nazi train, which took a considerable amount of time for the Wallace supporters (there were a lot of KKK members but the Klan wasn’t explicitly Nazi). It took time to reorganise Wallace’s group into the most dangerous terrorist organisation to spring up on American soil.

I can see how easy it would be for another William Pierce to take over Trump’s supporters and practically flip a switch to do it.

He walks around in a suit jacket that’s two sizes two large, a tie that’s 3 inches too long, and he wears a baseball cap when he’s outside to keep the mammal on his head from flying away. And that’s just his appearance that needs a makeover.

The situation in our media right now is such that Trump could call a press conference, walk out to the podium, drop a deuce on stage, and walk out knowing that half the media would be praising him for the color and consistency of the turd while the other half argued that such behavior is “just as bad” as Hillary refusing to hold a press conference.

I REALLY can’t see any good reason for Hispanic turnout being less than “All of them, Katie”. I can see there being a lower turnout for Black voters, but I still think that Trump’s absolute douchebaggery will be strongly remembered in the Black community.

So, I wouldn’t be surprised if that “likely voter” model goes out the window.

The parallels are terrifying.

The UK media played up the give-and-take between the two sides, and basically dropped the ball on analyzing what leaving or staying would mean for the UK and the EU, AFAIK. Likewise, the US media is skirting the very issue of what a Trump presidency would mean for the nation, if not the world. No one, to the best of my knowledge, has been asking the Trump campaign serious, hard questions about policy and platform. And if they have, they’ve just let Trump and his underlings squirm away with some BS answers. The biggest problem for American TV news is the time limits. Every show is constrained to 30 minutes or 60 minutes airtime (less commercials, etc.), so there is no willingness or motivation to delve deep into questions, to really grill these idiots on live coals. To do so takes time and effort, and neither the reporters nor the producers and editors have the willingness to push against the patent lying and obfuscation coming from the Trump campaign.

The tell on the debates is whether CNN allows their “instant poll” system to be used. The one thing that kept the 2008 debates from being driven by the media narrative that McCain was better was the instant tracking, which showed the viewers thought Obama was better.

Nate Silver’s ‘Nowcast’ chart—the rawest, least massaged. The 6Aug—6Sep line isn’t a dip. (The numbers themselves get more trustworthy as the LV polls and increased frequency kick in.) The window for effective action is closing, so the warm and fuzzy part of the campaign is over.

Note that the high-point was immediately after the DNC, the post-convention bounce that eclipsed Trump’s and kept going. As I noted yesterday, since then, the lead has ebbed as fence-sitters have started drifting back to telling pollsters that they’re going to vote third party because they think she’s got the election in the bag. Combine that with pollsters beginning to switch from “registered voters” to “likely voters” and you get a race that’s beginning to tighten just in time for the debates.

Trump talks like a five year old who got caught cold stealing a candy bar at the grocery store.

“I never spoke to her, first of all. She’s a fine person, beyond reproach. I never even spoke to her about it at all. She’s a fine person. Never spoken to her about it, never,” Trump said Monday while campaigning in Ohio. “Many of the attorney generals [sic] turned that case down because I’ll win that case in court. Many turned that down. I never spoke to her.”

What kind of idiot want’s a sad sack of shit like this to be president? It truly boggles the mind.

Also, maybe a media person could ask why he donated anything at all since she was running unopposed?

Hell, just look at the trend line on Silver’s predictions for 2012. Obama never held a better than 4% lead over Romney, spent much of the year within 3 points of him, and saw his lead plummet right after the first presidential debate. Not a gradual tapering as Clinton has had since the DNC, but a plummet from one day to the next. Before we start running around with our hair on fire, how’s about we wait for the trend lines to actually cross and Trump take and hold the lead for a period of time.

Looking at the Balloon Juice article, come to find out, NY allows you to record other people without them knowing about it. Here’s some of what she got:

Beginning in 2014, according to a person familiar with the lawsuit, Carlson brought her iPhone to meetings in Ailes’s office and secretly recorded him saying the kinds of things he’d been saying to her all along. “I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago, and then you’d be good and better and I’d be good and better. Sometimes problems are easier to solve” that way, he said in one conversation. “I’m sure you can do sweet nothings when you want to,” he said another time.

After more than a year of taping, she had captured numerous incidents of sexual harassment.

I gather that Trump is over-leveraged, meaning he’s up to his neck in debt payments for properties that just barely turn enough profit to service the debt. New York banks know the situation, and they also know Trump is not a trustworthy client or partner, given his habit of declaring bankruptcy and stiffing his creditors and partners.

I’d like to know what his liquidity is at any given moment. Getting a clear picture now would be a challenge, since his campaign seems to be paying Trump and his properties for services and rents.

Email and storing records for posterity is a new thing for the NARA to have to deal with. The transition to stronger email and documentation storage rules occurred on and after Clinton was Sec. State. The State Department’s general rules have become more stringent after she left. That’s why there’s so much misinformation about the Clinton email kerfuffle. GOP is intent to try and impose current rules on Clinton, when that’s simply not how it works.

Clinton did run afoul of some guidelines, but that’s a minor issue compared to what’s alleged. There was no classified info in the emails. There was misidentified emails.

It’s not like Clinton completely deleted emails while under investigation here. That’s something Trump did. It’s not like Clinton engaged in pay to play for her foundation in lieu for some benefit (there’s no evidence, not even questions leading to any conclusion of pay to play), unlike Trump, who donated illegally from his foundation to the TX and FL Attorney Generals, who shortly thereafter dropped their cases into his scam school - a textbook example of pay-to-play (aka corruption).

On and on - all the things that Trump and his right wing minions allege Clinton to have done are actually things Trump did do.

Everyone who submits a 1040 to the IRS knows what gross income is. They know what their W-2 says and how much taxes are withheld. They know how much a standard deduction is, and many will know what itemized deductions can include. They can see what charitable deductions can do to the tax burden.

So, it doesn’t matter that Trump’s got tons of shell companies, close corporations, LLCs and other entities in his name where his net worth is locked up in real estate getting preferential tax treatment.

At the end of the day, they can see how much money he made, how much was donated, and whether his income reflects his claims of net worth.

In fact, accountants, tax attorneys, and most everyone else can figure these out from the basic 1040 document without the associated schedules. Including the schedules would give a more complete picture. And that’s one reason Trump is loathe to release it - it would show he’s got a house of cards of leveraged real estate holdings and a trickle of trademark income plus some book royalties. It’s hardly the income that one would associate with a billionaire. He puts on appearances, which is something that many Trump observers note is symbolic of the egotistical and vanity Trump has in spades.

WOW.

Texas voted for Hoover in 1928. It all depends on how it plays in Plano, and Trump is affronting the refined tastes of The Great States’ white suburban women. In addition, voter registration drives are going fantastically well. Lastly, the hispanic community looks like it is actually (finally!) going to vote this year en masse.

If it wasn’t Trump, generic R presidential candidate Smith/Jones would still win by 10 points.

Bit it *is* Trump, bless has cold little heart and clueless little brain.

But a 1040 won’t reflect the expense accounts and other perks from which he benefits. It won’t show if his houses are owned by a company and he ays $1 a year rent… .

Trump reminds me of property flippers, who buy a property, do some minimal renovations, and sell it quickly to turn a profit. Until the resale, they are property rich and cash poor, but a list of their assets would suggest they are well off.

Trump doesn’t flip properties in quite the same way, but the upkeep for his six homes (plus whatever else he owns) would be substantial.

My main issue with the rebooted movie franchise is the lack of introspection and social commentary found in the TV series. Each one has been yet another Hollywood blockbuster with the valiant crew of the USS Enterprise saving the Federation and Earth from near annihilation, with the ship taking a real beating in the process.

I dunno, maybe things would be different in the 24th century, but if I were in charge, I’d think twice about giving a young captain with five year’s experience, who lost an entire starship and several hundred crew, a commendation and a new ship to command.

There can be only one Nimoy. He nailed the character. Quinto’s relationship with Saldana in the reboot bugs me, personally, because it’s so out of character for both of them. I call it “Voyager 2.0” because that’s pretty much how Berman and Braga wrote it for the first two seasons. Berman and Braga must have talked a good line to keep the show going after two seasons of flailing around. They never found a groove for the show, though there were some episodes that suggested possible avenues the showrunners could pursue. Coto was the one who created the story arcs, but by then it was too late. Viewership had declined to the point of no return. I liked the show and watched the first two and half seasons regularly, but even I started to tire of it by the end of the third season. I watched it only sporadically till its demise.

IMAO, only two of the movies reached that threshold. That excludes two of the arguably better movies.

Just took a lunch break and flipped on the TV. Tameron Hall is roasting A. J. Delgado about Trump’s taxes:

AJ: “he can’t release his taxes during an audit.”
TH: “I know that’s a talking point, but legally he can.”
AJ: “no talking point, I’m a lawyer: he can’t”
TH: “he can. he can; why doesn’t he?”
AJ: “it would affect his relationship with IRS, business partners, blah blah blah…”

meanwhile on CNN:

Berman and Baulduin (sp?): “why is the race tightening?”
Dana Bash: “she’s had a tough couple of weeks and there are these questions….”
Me: fuck the lot of you. Click.

I’ve been considering binge watching it again, but there’s so many new shows worth watching, too.

I think the third season had merit, even if the writing was sometimes uneven. The whole idea of a story arc was a good one, just not as well executed as it might have been under more competent leadership.

VOCABULARY WORD OF THE DAY:

Seppuku
Ritual suicide by disembowelment carried out by samurai. Literally means “stomach cutting.” The samurai committing seppuku would shove a dagger such as a tanto into their stomach while another samurai acted as their second by lopping off their head.

Seppuku is also reffered to as Harakiri

I once debated the merits of B & B as showrunners with a friend of mine who has more knowledge of the inner workings of TV series. He suggested they were perhaps not given as much freedom (or money for writers) to develop the show as they would have liked, and fell back onto something they knew how to do. I argued that even with those constraints, they could have done a better job unifying the plot threads and developing the characters, while exploring the huge time interval between first contact and the Captain Kirk years, and how Earth and the Federation came to be the way they were.

For example, no one has explained in the movies or TV series how Earth abandoned its old economic systems in favor of the very socialistic one suggested by Picard in Generations.

I liked the first two seasons, but their war with the Xindi in the third season was deadly. That’s how Deep Space Nine lost me too—their war with The Dominion. Turned them into just another action series—which is also what’s wrong with the new Trek movies IMO.

Enterprise at least alternated with shows about other subjects during that season, and then the fourth season was some of the best Trek ever. I wish the show had survived longer, myself.

There are a lot of good story lines about people not accepting change.

Netflix has posted the original Star Trek, so I have been going back to season one and noting all the firsts: the first guy in a red shirt to get beamed down with Captain Kirk and killed, the first “He’s dead, Jim” and the first “Fascinating”, along with the original “I cannot change the laws of physics!”

And great pantie flash shots of Uhura and Yeoman Rand…

Still no “She cannot take it, she’s gonna blow, Captain!” or “I’m a doctor, not a …………!”, and Chekhov has not joined the crew yet.

Man! Projecting like an IMAX. I keep hearing this over and over from the Right - the idea that Hillary lies about everything all the time is an article of faith. It has to be faith, because there’s no evidence to support it.

Meanwhile, they’ve nominated a guy who LITERALLY lies about everything all the time, and that’s objectively verifiable.

And the newsmedia, who KNOW Trump is totally corrupt, and about whom they could be writing a story a day about some corrupt dealing of his, can’t be bothered, because that’s old news. Instead, they act as Javert to Clinton’s Jean Valjean, Ahab to her Moby Dick - obsessed with finding SOMETHING, publishing repeatedly that their most recent failure to find any indiscretion, let alone any wrongdoing, ‘raises new questions’.

I’m starting to be concerned not only for this country, but the world in general, with folks like Duterte being elected, Brexit passing, and rising nationalist movements all over.

Trump - crime is crazy, and increasing. Minorities need to vote for me to save them from impending doom.

NYC to Trump: Really?

Mind you, this is after the NYPD was forced to stop using stop and frisk, and even as some other places in the country have seen localized increases in crime rates on a year over year basis. The reality is that even with the one year blip, the long term trend has been massive declines in crime rates. In fact, we’re at multidecade lows on most crimes.

If you follow NYPD crime stats on a weekly basis (and they produce running tallies), you’d see that they refer to not only year over year changes, but prior year, 5 years, and longer periods. That’s because there’s trends that show up over time.

It is not hard to “find” the crosstabs. I looked at them earlier. But even more than the difference in party affiliation is the change from a registered voter model to a Likely Voter model. As Nate Silver notes, this is one area where questions about the polling methods are relevant.

Let’s just wait and see what other polls say. I have a feeling this will be an outlier. Some polls have been doing likely voter for a while now. The odd thing for this election has been that Likely Voter models have (in general) been favoring Democrats this year, which is a break from the past several elections when they tended to favor Republicans. That is…until this CNN poll.

Democrats Go Nuclear in New Ad Targeting Donald Trump

Just his own words again:

With a mushroom cloud and at least $5 million worth of TV airtime behind it, the new ad from the pro-Hillary Clinton super PAC Priorities USA is sure to stand out in a crowded political landscape.

The spot, “I Love War,” which was shared first with NBC News, will run widely in North Carolina, Ohio, Florida, Nevada and Iowa starting Friday. It includes no narration, opting instead for images of war juxtaposed with Trump’s own words.

But again, this is nonetheless a net win for DT: it continues to distract us from the fact that he has absolutely no record of public service, no administrative, policy-making or legislative history to refer to.

That is the point that we need to keep repeating to voters. The DT supporters see that as a feature not a bug, but I think most sane and normal people will realize that they are being sold a political pig in a poke.

Police found no evidence of a break-in, but probably because the house had been destroyed before they got there.
Out here in the xenoburbs there is a whole folklore of rampaging “others” spilling out of their inner city lairs to loot and pillage. The average Fox viewer here in Palo Pinto is apparently convinced that there are at least 8 million drug crazed welfare recipients in DFW alone. They live in terror of the day when the “welfare checks stop,” for then the hordes will swarm out like zombies, oblivious to gunfire when they detect fancy electronics and huge food stashes in the white folks’s suburban homes. This is why so many of the local “preppers,” (whose actual survival skills are almost nil) feel they have to store thousands of rounds of ammunition.

I did not know this. You would think a sour old prune like Schlafly would have no sense of humor.

[Embedded content]

[Embedded content]

More perspective on the old prune.

Just as I was geared up to write about Donald Trump’s dud of a visit to an African American church in Detroit, much more significant news for the history of American religion and politics hit Twitter: the death of conservative maven, impresario, and remarkably successful political activist Phyllis Schlafly.

The connection between the two, however, suggests something about the course—decline and fall, perhaps more accurately—of a certain brand of conservative populism, because Schlafly, in conjunction with two co-authors, is set to publish The Conservative Case for Trump—available now from Regnery Publishing!

[…]

Reflecting on her legacy, historian Kevin Kruse tweeted, “even if you hate what she did, remember how she did it. Because she gave you a blueprint to do anything. Even to undo her work.” She did not live to see the (pretty likely) election of the first female President, but if you hear someone rolling over in her grave in early November, you’ll know who, and why. And by leading a generation of Republicans towards what became the Trump train, she helped make it possible. In the end, the empire she created struck back.

That’s the beginning and the end of the article. Click through for the meaty middle, It’s good.

Trump’s taking questions from his own surrogate - and can’t answer the softball question. That speaks volumes as to his ability to concentrate on any task at hand. He simply can’t focus on anything asked. Goes off on own tangents. Gotta wonder if he’s on ADHD meds since he’s prone to rant and rave, engages in late night benders on Twitter, and can’t stick to the issue at hand.

Assumes facts not in evidence - that he even knows where Syria is on a map. Or that there’s actually Muslims who are being slaughtered for not being sufficiently Muslim enough for IS, or that people might have IS materials on their phones so as to fool IS into thinking that they’re not apostate or the like - which would be a death sentence for them.

Or, that searching for videos or stories of events in Syria might lead to having IS materials on their computers/phones.

I think the simpler approach is to presume that the ISIS material on people’s phones is every bit as real as the thousands of Muslims celebrating 9/11 in Jersey City.
