My guess is that he’s referring to China. China recently put a carrier to sea - a retrofitted old Russian carrier - ex Varyag, called the Liaoning. It’s a testbed platform for testing Chinese naval air power - aircraft, tactics, etc.

It’s the first carrier in the Chinese fleet. And carries a fraction of the planes a typical US carrier does, lacks the range, or support fleet.

No good deed (building the meme generator) goes unpunished. Perhaps make it available only to those who are karmically enhanced? Say anyone with a 1000+ rating? That’d be a threshold for weeding out socks and trolls and you could throw in that they’d have to have a net positive karma. I know Sergey and a few others made that suggestion over the past week.

The internet was a mistake.

…now that I’ve gotten my non-visual meme for the day in, it’s still depressing how much this bullshit gets to thrive like it has. Like, holy shit, it feels like internet culture sometimes is just a full-on extension of Bircherdom and white supremacy. And even the assholes who supposedly indulge it ‘ironically’ for humor and supposed mockery continue to do it to the point it’s clear it’s not as ‘ironic’ as they keep insisting.

25
lawhawk  Sep 6, 2016 • 12:06:08pm

The Trump curve:

A: He rants on about Clinton’s health, never answers any direct question with an answer on point.
B: He talks about 9/11 conspiracies and suggests Obama is behind everything
C: Clinton cough shows she’s not healthy enough to be president.
D: Trump drops drawers and moons moderator
F: Trump flings fecal matter at audience to wild applause.

The reality of the curve? Trump’s A comports with a D, and it’s downhill from there.

Meanwhile, Clinton is also going to be graded on a curve, where a performance that would otherwise be an A is down-dinged because she didn’t address her attire, that she is standing or coughed to clear her voice, or took a drink of water, or used the restroom during a break, or didn’t answer a multipart question with sufficient specificity, even though Trump interrupted on multiple occasions to try and break her concentration.

People think in narratives, not with self-awareness or skepticism. The faster medium accelerates how quick tropes and just-so stories circulate, which is definitely a problem.

Rigor requires paragraphs and care…high-emotion bullshit can be conveyed in easy-to-repeat sentence fragments.

Look how well it’s working for Trump. He often doesn’t really make sense, and is incredibly vague, yet to his followers, it’s all perfectly clear because he’s addressing their preconceptions and the tropes they imbue with veracity.

“I will be the greatest jobs president in history, believe me!”
“We always lose, lose so badly. When I am president, we’ll win so much, you’ll get tired of winning!”
Repeat as necessary, be acclaimed by pundits after debate as winner for being “presidential.”

Sam Wang takes a swipe at Nate Silver (from Daily Kos):

As electoral-vote.com has pointed out, sites such as FiveThirtyEight are under economic pressure to attract traffic. And there is nothing to attract eyeballs like a crazy Presidential race.

In swing states, the race ranges from showing Trump up by 1 point in Iowa to a Clinton lead of about 6 points in her best states, such as Virginia. That’s a reasonably good position for Clinton, but it isn’t quite as safe as it might sound. That’s because the swing states tend to rise and fall together.

Just to remind everyone, variations in this year’s race are quite narrow, consistent with the last 20 years of partisan polarization. Polarization has made both the GOP and Democratic nominees unacceptable to nearly all supporters of the other party. In addition, Donald Trump is radioactive to about one-fifth of his own party. So this year’s race is melodramatic - but stable. In 2016, the Princeton Election Consortium’s state poll-based aggregate has varied between 310 and 350 EV for Hillary Clinton.

I suspect it’s not what the article is actually saying, but “The Alt-Right Is The Mirror Image Of The New Left” has been true with the fringy parts of the left, out there where Stein supporters meet up with the right.

They’re trying to thread the NO TRUE CONSERVATIVE needle:

Both progressivism and the alt-right’s populism are identity movements that share many of the same assumptions. Here’s the difference: the Left wants to dismantle rugged individualism to create a transnational progressive utopia with a global ruling elite at the levers of power, while the alt-right wants its individual utopias localized to individual sovereign nation states. (Although, to be fair, they’d probably settle for Idaho.)

It’s not the racism in the alt-right that’s a problem. It’s that they’re trying to claim they’re conservatives but they’re really not, wink wink. They’re just right-wing cultural Marxists who wallow in identity politics. Or something.

The Right really, truly has no idea how and why identity politics works. That’s why on the one hand they’ll talk about Affirmative Action as the worst thing ever, because “it really should be about each individual, not the color of their skin, like MLK said” but on the other hand racial profiling is okay because “blacks commit most of the crime, and if they don’t want cops to stop them they should do something about their community”

It’s also why they think Sarah Palin on the ticket will bring in all the women, and saying nice things about Ben Carson will bring in all the blacks.

re: #81 scottslemmons

That other sound you just heard is the M-I complex sending someone out to Trump’s latest rented McMansion to beat the crap out of him.

And the other other sound is everyone on House Armed Services and House Appropriations running to K Street.

Nah, they’re safe. They’ve got all their bought-and-paid-for House drones to rely upon. Acquaintance of mine is a military contractor. The tales he tells are depressing and awful; basically, it’s just full-on bribery and threats that make the money machine flow.

This is the system that we’ve built over the last 36 years of demagoguery over “our defense is weak!!” It has sucked the lifeblood out of the economy of the U.S. And we can’t seem to stop, because frightened old tiny-penised white rural men shriek in terror over the thought of Not Enough Gunz!!!

hahhahaaaaaaaaaaa

Not that they don’t deserve it, but that sound you just heard is the collective sphincter of the M-I complex tightening

But, who ELSE builds that stuff? You know, airplanes, tanks, missiles, bombs - they’re kinda specialized. Even in WWII when Smith Corona was making M1903 Springfield rifles, they weren’t responsible for developing the weapon or the manufacturing process.

re: #78 Lidane

Considering that all the defense contractors are highly connected, what the hell does Trump actually mean by go around? Skipping the DoD acquisition process to buy direct? No bid contracts? What.

The military acquisition system is seriously flawed and needs to be streamlined and improved to cut costs, but going around contractors? Who’s he going to go around to?

With consolidation in the defense business, there’s only a handful of companies to choose from. If you’re talking planes, it’s Boeing, Northrup Grumman, or Lockheed Martin. UAVs? You’d get General Atomics in there as well.

After BAE, Raytheon, and United Technologies, and then you have a bunch of tech companies that have contracts with the Defense Department.

re: #82 Timothy Watson

Yep. Lots of congressmen calling up and saying shit like,

“Well, you know, if Trump gets in, it’s going to be hard to hold the line against him … I hear he wants to gut the defense budget by 50%. Yep. Mm-hm. 50%. Maybe more. We can’t know. The guy’s totally nutso, and, well, we might have to go along with him, if he’s got all the people riled up and behind … what’s that? Why yes, I did open an account in the Caymans last year during that vacation you guys paid for, and … you already have the account number?

“Well, that’d be just fine, then. I think we can make that work.”

One need not look any further than the F-22/F-35, and LCS programs.
