In Ohio, Donald Trump Refuses to Say Obama Was Born in the US

The return of Birtherism to the Trump campaign
Politics • Views: 51,359

Donald Trump’s poll numbers have ticked upward, and he’s getting cocky again. Today in Ohio, he signaled a return to the disgusting racist conspiracy theory that made him a right wing star: Trump defiant as polls rise, won’t say Obama was born in United States.

In the interview, conducted late Wednesday aboard his private plane as it idled on the tarmac here, Trump suggested he is not eager to change his pitch or his positions even as he works to reach out to minority voters, many of whom are deeply offended by his long-refuted suggestion that Obama is not a U.S. citizen. Trump refused to say whether he believes Obama was born in Hawaii.

“I’ll answer that question at the right time. I just don’t want to answer it yet,” Trump said.

When asked whether his campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, was accurate when she said recently that he now believes Obama was born in this country, Trump responded: “It’s okay. She’s allowed to speak what she thinks.”

Just saw the Clinton attack commercial that is nothing but Republicans saying negative things about Trump. True, but not certain it will be effective since I think a lot of people are set in who they are going vote for (or perhaps for many it’s vote against.)

The man just doesn’t give up.

What really scares the shit out of me is that he may actually go nuclear on North Korea should the man-child do a test if he gets elected just to remind everyone (and to send a bloody nose to Russia and China) that the USA still remains the only nation-state to have used nuclear weapons in anger.

“I’ll answer that question at the right time. I just don’t want to answer it yet,” Trump said.

The only proper response to that from a real journalist is “The right time to answer it is now, as you’re being asked. Unless that is you’re somehow afraid or incapable of telling us the truth.”

Mother fuck the US media. They’re 100% complicit in this undermining of our democracy. They’ve chosen to enable and legitimize white nationalism instead of doing the goddamned job, which should be accurately informing the public.

Drumpfskindepoche has arrived in Australia:

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson delivers incendiary maiden speech to Senate

Greens Senators walked out of Pauline Hanson’s incendiary first speech to the Senate, after she claimed the nation was “in danger of being swamped by Muslims” with its people “living under Sharia law and treated as second-class citizens” if urgent changes weren’t made to immigration policies.

The Queensland senator made her views on Islam and those who practise it clear just a few minutes into her first Senate speech, claiming they “bear a culture and ideology which is incompatible with our own” and calling for an end to all immigration.

That was two days ago. She has her supporters:

Some people on Twitter seem to think Trump will say at the debates he now believes Obama was born in the US, to get some fawning media coverage and look like he’s moving toward sanity.

I doubt it. Trump’s Razor says he’s going to stick with Birtherism because it’s worked really well for him with the right wing base.

One of her many clueless supporters:

Bill Richards “Apparently the local Islamic community have been in touch with the ABC to get me to meet with them”…. mozzies trying for a gotchya moment so that they could “prove” that you’re an ‘islamophobe’ by refusing to meet with them. “…Nationally, Trump is at 43. Add Libertarian Gary Johnson, and Trump falls to 39 percent.

Trump doesn’t even break 40 percent in Colorado (38 percent), Michigan (36 percent), New Hampshire (37 percent), Pennsylvania (38 percent), Virginia (38 percent), and Wisconsin (38 percent). Actually, Romney was at least in the low 40s in those states, so Trump is further behind than the last Republican loser.

Or put another way, Trump can barely muster a third of the electorate in many key battleground states.”

Do you realize that a hypothesis does not guarantee something is actually going to happen?

Here is a simple definition of Hypothesis: a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.

Nothing in that definition means anything is going to happen. It is a study of what could happen.

This is a fine example of someone running around looking for a storm cloud to stand under and then complaining it is always raining.

Is it fair people feel that way about her. No. But it is there.

Clinton’s positive proposals and negative attacks vs. Trump are both essential parts of her campaign IMO.

If we can’t decisively reject blatant proto-fascism as represented by Trump, his supporters and much of the Republican party in this election, the US is most likely doomed.

well Nate may be saying that the polls are tightening, but I gotta say, after being polled about six times in the last three days here in Southern Arizona, it’s kind of easy to see why when you think about the framing that is being done with the questions.

Actually had two polls ask me, “are you reluctantly voting for Hilary Clinton because you don’t believe that Donald Trump has the temperament to be President?”

sure polls matter, as if all polls are equal and ask the same questions in the same context….

I sometimes get garbage out of my system by having a glass of potato vodka straight from the freezer and writing as I sip. Today’s writing is a poem of sorts to help me deal with the Trump bullshit pressing down on me, and here it is.

I like poetry enough to quote ancient, better, poets:
from Refugee Blues

The consul banged the table and said,
“If you’ve got no passport you’re officially dead”:
But we are still alive, my dear, but we are still alive.

Went to a committee; they offered me a chair;
Asked me politely to return next year:
But where shall we go to-day, my dear, but where shall we go to-day?

Came to a public meeting; the speaker got up and said;
“If we let them in, they will steal our daily bread”:
He was talking of you and me, my dear, he was talking of you and me.

Thought I heard the thunder rumbling in the sky;
It was Hitler over Europe, saying, “They must die”:
O we were in his mind, my dear, O we were in his mind.

That’s why I think it so essential that the Clinton campaign include calling out Trump for what he is (bigoted etc.) as a central campaign message.

This election really is good vs. evil in a way that has been rare in US history up until now. Nothing good will come of pretending that it’s business as usual, and that Trump’s lies of the day about policy issues (e.g. taxes etc) are at all relevant.

The one balance is that we’re trying to elect our first woman president. This will cost a few percent, even though it shouldn’t. It’s just like electing the first black man. Plus, Republicans have been dreading and preparing for Hillary’s run for 25 years.

Right. Show me the states. As I recall, the red states are so damn red these days it’s like a bit of a (D) gerrymander effect in the electoral college, where a Republican could plausibly get more of the popular vote than the Democrat and still lose in the electoral college. I see the false balance crowd as the bigger problem than the fascists, actually. The fascists by themselves aren’t going to get to the ~50% thresholds they need in a two party system. Fascists + MBF enablers can win, and then the MBF crowd will do nothing to stop the fascists.

Ok, the ADL might be about raise the alarm, so to speak.

That would be useful. I’ve always though it inevitable that the Republican party would end up returning to the anti-Semitism that is characteristic of conservative bigoted nativists.

However, this is happening decades earlier than I expected, because of Trump.

If the ADL starts hammering Trump for the anti-Semitism he tolerates in his supporters, Trump will have no easy response.

re: #86 Belafon

Like she’s been doing?

Just my opinion. I think at this point there needs to be more positive.

Have you ever heard that bit about never argue with a street person? You have to fight down on their level and they are better experienced at it.

Trump is good at the negative. It is his territory.

Think back on her convention speech. I think she has gotten a little away from that. She had a bit of that Obama soaring feel good preacher thing going.

Also, it may keep the media from continually saying the whole shebang is a mud wrestling fight and back off the type of criticism she did get from the media on her
“attacking” the voters.

She can still get in some zingers, but tighten them up so they can be powerful and kept at a minimum. Then give examples immediately of actual political governing experience which Trump has none of which is a natural implied negative made without being negative. A little compare and contrast of actual bad policy Trump is proposing without even mentioning him.

Go over his head. It might frustrate Trump too. He wants a street fight.

The balance between positive and negative is a judgement call, and as far as I can tell the Clinton campaign is doing both.

But Trump has run a campaign founded on scapegoating of others. That cannot be minimized or overlooked.

Furthermore, decades of resentment-based politicking has transformed the Republican party into a party based on scapegoating of others. This also cannot be minimized or overlooked.

People get murdered, in large numbers, when this scapegoating shit gets out of hand.

That’s what I’ve heard from friends. That in a brownie, it takes longer to ‘hit’, so to speak. And by the time it hits, you’ve eaten too much. A friend said she stayed high for 3 days, because she just loved brownies too much!

When you smoke it, the effects are immediate and short term, the drug is absorbed in your lungs, which is a mainline to your bloodstream. When you eat it the effects are delayed and can be longer term, it takes a little longer for the drug to get to your bloodstream through your digestive tract.

Highest I’ve ever been on weed, I ate it.

Try listening to the words of an old geezer who has much less reason to think that he will even wake up tomorrow than you do. We all have fears. We all just want to feel safe. But we cannot let our fears cripple us, and we cannot let our desire for safety drive us to hide under blankets in the closet. Even if this election should go to the idiots, this Republic has believe it or not gone through worse things and still, eventually, gone forward. Take some heart.

I must not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.

Only I will remain.

Unreal.

On the campaign trail today, HRC mentioned trump’s birtherism, so perhaps this statement from his campaign is a response to that. Assuming it sticks and trump himself doesn’t contradict it, the silver lining is that he can’t use it as a omg-so-presidential-pivot moment in the first debate.

Politics as a safe space is just a horrible idea. Period. The whole point of politics is to argue with the opposition to advance your point of view over theirs and sometimes you’re not going to win.

And yes, I realize that in this case one point of view involves human rights and supporting them and one doesn’t, but ultimately that’s what this whole thing boils down to.

(And for a lot of people, that’s all it is, which is why we have people who don’t give a shit.)

Just because, and using some really rough estimates (approximating the volume of the seat as two 0.5” cylinders, based on the short-length diameter of the toilet seat in my house, and subtracting the smaller from the larger), I did the math. That toilet seat is close to 50 pounds.

Probably worth at least $10,000.

Fun facts: The gold bars you often see in movies represent Good Delivery bullion bars. If they were real gold, each would weigh about 12-13 kg (27 pounds) and at today’s gold price would be worth about $42,000. The movies make handling these things look a lot easier than it would be in reality.

Right. Show me the states. As I recall, the red states are so damn red these days it’s like a bit of a (D) gerrymander effect in the electoral college, where a Republican could plausibly get more of the popular vote than the Democrat and still lose in the electoral college. This is especially striking in view of the over-representation of sparsely populated states in the electoral college, which are mostly red.

And yet, Hillary is running ads in south by dog carolina. Just saw one tonight. And on at least some maps I’ve seen, SOUTH BY DOG CAROLINA Y’ALL, is pink instead of crimson.

Hahahahahahahaha oh man all my countertops are fucking tile I hate this house.

:-) In fact, I’ve never had a house with either one, but I’ve helped carry them into other people’s homes. All my homes had laminate counter tops, including one with a nice scorch mark we never fixed.

My flat here in China, though, has a tiled counter top. I also hate it, but it’s rent-free so I shan’t complain.

It’s true, because one requires the other.

We’re night owls here at casa klys. Morning doesn’t ring in until 9am and that’s considered on the early side.

I can’t find the energy or the money to redo the kitchen or the master bathroom so I deal. That can be the next owner’s problem.

Especially since we keep saying we’re going to move in the next year. One of these years that will actually be true dammit.

Pro or con for this election: I’ve learned how to make tasty margaritas at home. mr. klys had a bad day. I had a bad day. What are we doing right now?

FFS, the only conclusion that can be drawn at this point is that the media is willfully allowing themselves to be continually rolled by Trump.

Trump’s taxes? “Nobody wants to hear about that.”

Trump Foundation scandals? “Clinton Foundation!”

Melania’s immigration status? “Not an issue.”

Trump’s birtherism? “He says Obama was naturally born, case closed.”

Fuck me, the debate is gonna be a shit show of yuuuuge proportions.
