NASA’s Cassini spacecraft stared at Saturn for nearly 44 hours in April 2016 to obtain this movie showing four Saturn days.

Cassini will begin a series of dives between the planet and its rings in April 2017, building toward a dramatic end of mission — a final plunge into the planet, six months later.

For more information about the Cassini-Huygens mission visit saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and nasa.gov.

Megan Rapoine knelt for the national anthem tonight in the USNWT game against Thailand. US Soccer released a statement that is simply mind blowing in its tone deafness…

In front of national and often global audiences, the playing of our national anthem is an opportunity for our Men’s and Women’s National Team players and coaches to reflect upon the liberties and freedom we all appreciate in this country. As part of the privilege to represent your country, we have an expectation that our players and coaches will stand and honor our flag while the national anthem is played.

Contemplate your liberties and freedom, just don’t express them… I really got nothing

And with tech that old! Imagine what we could do with today’s tech.

Cassini launched when those constant gyro failures were still a mystery. They finally figured out that spinning them up with compressed air during testing to spare the motors was oxidizing the copper printed circuit traces that powered them. Switching to nitrogen solved the problem. That discovery came while Cassini was on its way, and had had two gyros fail before even reaching Jupiter, so I was really sweating the whole thing out. Who would have thought the last three—the minimum complement—would last for 20 years?

I still think the Huygens probe landing on Titan will be the pinnacle for space exploration in my lifetime.

Huygens landed in January 2005. Rosetta was great. It’s just that Titan is such a fascinating moon—and we had Voyager 1 go right by it without seeing anything, then waited 24 years for another try.

Pinoe is an inspiration for girls and young women across the country. Stand up to power! Break through barriers and make your own path!

Men don’t run this country anymore. It’s run by Americans, and they can see the good as well as the warts, and respond appropriately. This statement by US Soccer is just stupid PR bullshit. Fuck ‘em.

Titan has oceans of methane, with a weather cycle based on that liquid. There’s a remote possibility of life there, as well.

Gee, that awesome video takes me back to days of wonder when I was seven years old and encountered Dan Dare, and of course The Mekon, in Eagle magazine, to which I subscribed. Granny would read The Times (with the classifieds on the front page) in bed, and I would read the Eagle. I’ve still got the clock that chimed as we did this. This is what being a grown-up was supposed to be like.

We have not. We’ve done a week on Skye (which for a geologist is just a wet dream). She Who Must Be Obeyed was taking a course there and I hitchhiked and bussed all over the island, banging on rocks, walking faults, and climbing intrusive plutons, which are not nearly as dirty as they sound. It was glorious.

Islay is small, reached by ferry, and can be completely covered in two or three days. Iain Banks wrote a travelogue published in 2003 where he was paid (!!) to visit every active distillery in Scotland (Raw Spirit). Check it out at the library and give it a read. It’s a lovely book by a wonderful author who was taken from us far too quickly by, of all things, cancer of the gall bladder (who knew?).

Not a bad price for an Epiphone 12-string, if I’m reading that right.

Yeah, but remember, I’m a fake geologist by way of chemistry.

I did promise the real-est geologist on my committee, after they granted that I had finished my defense, that I would never misrepresent myself so he could rest easy. Bless him, he was definitely the climb-all-over-rocks type.

I will definitely check out the book though.

“…Here’s how the university says it’s spending Morin’s millions:

- $2.5 million toward an expanded career center for students and alumni;
- $1 million toward a video scoreboard for the new football stadium;
- $100,000 to Dimond Library, to provide “scholarships for work-study students, support staff members who continue their studies in library science and fund the renovation of one of the library’s multimedia rooms.”

…”

According to school officials, the only “dedicated gift” in the bequest was the $100,000 going to the library. (which means they are free to use the rest of the funds as their little shriveled hearts desire)
Background provided, the football stadium recently had a $25,000,000 renovation…

So long as sports remain a revenue stream for schools, they’ll keep bypassing spending on studies and putting it towards sports which fill the coffers but not student’s minds.

….so a better ratio than a harp, you’re saying?

Actually, if the temperature in the room or the space is stable, the harp is pretty stable (She Who Must Be Obeyed played an outdoor gig last Friday at the Green Mesquite and only had to do some touch-ups between songs).

Next Friday she is playing with Oliver Rajamani’s Indian/Flamenco/Gypsy fusion band at the Carver Center (with dancers!). That space (about 250 tiered seats) sucks for temperature control, and there will be a fair amount of fiddling with the strings. Some go sharp, some go flat. A human being is basically a 100-watt light bulb and 25,000 watts of heat in a confined space is hard to overcome without a kick-ass air conditioning system. You would think that a temperature rise would affect all strings the same way, but gut, steel, and nylon react differently.

SWMBO prefers an outdoor venue, unless it rains, of course.

Oh, I’ll be stage managing the gig next Friday! I’m really good at that.

I am guardedly optimistic that she will win, barring some major disaster or calamitous event.

The thing that scares me is that all it would take are any sort of otherwise minor and trivial revelations for the media to blow up into a major “disaster” for Hillary. Them medias just love them some dramatic game-changing turnarounds and they are willing to sink to whatever level necessary to turn one up.

To play the polemic game once more; from the Völkischer Beobachter(/):

Late Thursday, in an effort at damage control, a Trump spokesman issued a statement saying that “Mr. Trump believes that President Obama was born in the United States.”

But the statement, by Jason Miller, a senior communications adviser, goes on to falsely blame Hillary Clinton for starting rumors about Mr. Obama’s birth in the 2008 campaign, and it then called her “weak” for not getting the question answered.

SNIP

The Clinton campaign is unlikely to let Mr. Trump off the hook at a time when he clearly wants to change the subject.

Hillary Clinton was quick to respond in a blistering speech, asking an audience in Washington on Thursday night, “When will he stop this ugliness, this bigotry?”

I had new tires put on at the auto center yesterday, and while I was waiting I walked over to a local 2nd hand instruments store. I’ve been wanting a 12 string for a while now and I found this 12 string that is an exact match for a guitar I’ve had for about 25 years, so I had to buy it ($150).

re: #56 Targetpractice

So long as sports remain a revenue stream for schools, they’ll keep bypassing spending on studies and putting it towards sports which fill the coffers but not student’s minds.

Assumes facts not in evidence. Sports are not a revenue stream. They are a drag on the central mission of the university. Unless you’re an elite team with regular appearances in championship tournaments, you’re losing money. Heck, even top tier teams don’t always break even.

Of course, athletics programs foster other, less-clearly defined but important benefits for their institutions. At liberal arts colleges like the one I attended, varsity sports drive enrollment. Should that count as profit? Any number of UGA students will tell you they came here because of the football team. What about goodwill generated among legislators and donors?

These are important considerations. Significant athletics investments may indeed be a good value proposition for building community, spirit, and support. However, no good measures exist for assessing these less-tangible achievements. Most studies find no link between winning teams and measures of institutional success like number and quality of applications, fundraising dollars, or state appropriations.

Justifying institutional spending on athletics is becoming a much more pressing issue for most programs, especially in Division I. Institutions with Football Bowl Subdivision programs have seen subsidies of athletics rise by 53 percent at the median from 2005-2009, according to the Knight Commission. Meanwhile, spending on education and related functions rose only 22 percent. There are similar gaps at other Division I institutions.

Here in NJ, Rutgers spends millions on their football program, and it’s lost millions as they build new stadium, infrastructure, and the team isn’t bringing in money b/c it hasn’t made it to championships where it can return funds to the school. It then moved into the Big 10, so there’s more money available to the team. The other sports pick up the scraps.

And why is Trump back on the birther nonsense? Well, that kerfuffle diverts attention from a real scandal - and potential criminality: the donations to the Florida and Texas Attorney Generals who then dropped investigations into Trump’s scam school.

That’s real quid pro quo. That’s pay to play. That’s corruption.

For all the BS about the Clinton Foundation and no actual evidence of pay to play or wrongdoing, we have actual evidence that Trump paid off attorney generals in several states with “donations” to their campaigns that were followed by dropping investigations.

That’s even as NY was not only investigating Trump, but found that he broke NY law by claiming the use of the word “university” even though the entity was not legally able to use that term under state law. It was not an accredited institution, which is why Trump later changed the name. He had no choice.

OK, I just read through the article. It actually does nothing about clearing the Clintons by actually pointing out they’ve been pretty good about staying clean. It just points out that, because of the SCOTUS ruling on McDonnell in VA, it’ll be harder to go after any public official for corruption. They’re basically saying “It doesn’t matter what the facts are, there’s nothing that the Clintons could get in trouble for anyway. Oh, and this means we don’t have to look at Trump’s stuff either.” It also means they don’t have to take back their previous accusations about the Clinton Foundation.

One thing that bugs the hell out of me is that, since bringing aboard the trifecta of Conway/Bannon/Ailes, trump’s fortunes have been rising and his media coverage more flattering. They’re obviously far better at manipulation and propaganda than Manafort.

Heh. Andrea Mitchell and Kristen Welker are talking about how Hillary is trying to get away from dumping on Trump and start talking about all her positives and future visions, etc.

Exactly what I was saying last evening. I think it is time to really contrast.

Just think, it’s now true because a media person has said so, not because Clinton has been talking about her stuff for a while.

We hear next to nothing from HRC except when she is dumping on Trump. This from a media that would rather show an empty podium waiting for DT than Hillary giving a speech before a handicapped organization.

So naturally it is assumed that all she does between revitalizing herself by injecting stem cells taken from live kidnapped six-year-olds is to denounce Trump and his loyal, hard-working, god-fearing American followers as deploratable scum

This is why everything Trump related is vaporware. Nothing passes the smell test, including Trump’s vaunted tax plan. You’d think this would be the most developed part of his policy platform (especially since it’s cribbed from the House GOP framework re: rates after dropping his 3 bracket 25% top tax rate earlier this year). It isn’t. He’s clueless about the tax policy, and yet still claims he could be revenue neutral.

That strains credulity. It also is the most charitable way of saying that Trump has no actual tax plan.

You can’t even begin to score a plan like this without basics like knowing how passthroughs would be taxed and at what rates (passthroughs being partnerships, LPs, LLC, LLPs, etc.)

re: #279 The Vicious Babushka

So how much is the Trump campaign paying the Trump hotel for hosting this event?

You mean Trump campaign contributors, since Trump isn’t self-financing his campaign. His donors just paid for this event, with free media exposure.

This is just another example of Trump getting others to pay for his business advertising, and for the self-dealing that comprises a vast portion of Trump enterprises.

But remember, he charges a charitable groups $200-350k to host a charitable events at Mar a Lago.

One of the charities most loyal to Trump’s club, the Palm Beach Police Foundation, which supports the local police department, has spent an average of $261,777 each year on its annual ball, held at Trump’s club every year since the charity was founded in 2006. Where the organization’s tax records show fees for the price of the facility, those range from $125,000 in 2007 to $235,362 in 2012 to $276,463 in 2013.
Asked whether he agrees with the Republican nominee’s suggestion that hosting charity events at Mar-a-Lago is part of how he gives back, John Scarpa, the foundation’s president, said in an interview with BuzzFeed News that the resort has granted his organizations what he estimates is a 10 to 12% discount on food. He says the club also provides some free amenities, such as heaters for the pre-dinner poolside cocktails (the Policeman’s Ball is in January). Trump, Scarpa said, donates a private helicopter trip to his Doral Golf Course to be sold at the event’s auction, an item that he called a “really good money-maker for us.”

During at least three years, the Palm Beach Police Foundation has lost money at Mar-a-Lago, losing more than $278,000 between its dinners in 2006, 2007, and 2010. Roger Craver, a charity expert who spoke with BuzzFeed News, said that losing money as a new charity was not uncommon. Scarpa, who said he considered the events a success, did not respond to a follow-up request for comment on the lost money.

Trump is frequently involved with events hosted at his club, donating his time and celebrity by acting as event chairman or serving as a charity’s sponsoring member (charity events must have a member sponsor them in order to be held at the private club).

He has also sometimes pledged money, like when he pledged $50,000 during a live auction at one 2012 American Heart Association event. Trump’s foundation tax record from that year shows a donation to the American Heart Association of $65,000.

Once again, Trump finds ways to profit on charity, and doesn’t personally give (that’s up to his stingy foundation to do).

This week Volkswagen Truck & Bus announced a $256 million spend for 16.6 percent of the United States’ heavy-truck outfit Navistar, which make International Trucks and IC Bus. The plan is ostensibly for VW to help Navistar comply with diesel emissions regulations. No, really!

As we reported yesterday, Volkswagen T&B already owns parts of European big-truck companies Scania, MAN and of course Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus. But the incursion into Navistar will give them a position in the U.S. truck market.

It’s hilarious how, since Hilary referred to them as deplorables, the Republicans, from their fearless leader Trump on down, have done everything possible to reinforce her statement.

There was one guy (don’t remember his name, but a senior Trump guy) who kept trying to blame the media for the birther thing being an issue, then tried to blame Hillary, kept trying to divert the convo to Trump’s support for the AA community and how he just wants to talk about jobs. Wolf Blitzer (yeah really!) wouldn’t even let him finish a sentence, just kept pounding on the birther issue and Trump’s lies. AMAZEBALLS!

Or Romney. Either could back Johnson, but both have to know that to do so is to risk giving the election to Trumpoid. And that’s gotta give them pause, especially I would think, W, who has sat in the presidential chair and can’t be enthused at the prospect of Trumpshit in the oval office.

Given the crap that is posted on some of the police forums by alleged LEOs, I’m not sure why this would be surprising.

Only surprise is this wasn’t done on day 1 of his candidacy. Trump lives anyone who puts them darkies in their place. He took out a full page ad against those kids from Central Park. And continued to rail against them after it was determined they were innocent.

Trump and his ilk are a cancer in our society.

Unfortunately, so are too many cops.

So far, the reaction of the press corps has been scathing. It was a bait-and-switch. They got played. When will we ever learn? They are pissed.

So is this a turning point? It’s one thing to acknowledge that Trump is a master of TV, but it’s another for him to be so blatant about manipulating the press. After all, there’s a point at which reporters stop being amused by the Trump campaign and start resenting it. Maybe we got there today.

And, to wit:

Mark Cuban is trolling Trump hard.

There’s $10 million offer on the table - a straight up payment, for a 4 hour interview of Trump by Cuban. No one else in the room. No mentions of Clinton or anyone else - just Trump and his policies.

There’s no way Trump takes that offer, even if it’s equivalent to getting paid $2.5 million an hour.

Of course not; it doesn’t go right into Trump’s pocket. To get it, he would have to launder it through the Trump Foundation.

Charles P. Pierce’s take:

“And here’s where the test comes in. The Trump campaign believes that the elite political media is as much of a dumb beast as the Trump campaign believes the voters are. There is no longer any reason to cover this campaign as anything but a truthless danger to the American republic.

It is a freak show, a carny act the pyrotechnics of which threaten to burn everything down around them. Are we all as dumb as they think we are? Are we a nation of easy marks? Those answers are still unclear.”
