NYC Bombing Update: FBI Stops “Vehicle of Interest” on Verrazano Bridge

US News • Views: 50,067

Information is very scarce right now but there have been some developments tonight in the investigation into the bombing in Chelsea.

The FBI confirmed Sunday night that a traffic stop on the Verrazano Bridge is part of an investigation into Saturday’s bombing in Manhattan that injured 29 people.

Around 8:45 p.m. Sunday, the FBI and NYPD stopped a vehicle of interest on the bridge, the FBI said in a statement.

No one has been charged with a crime and the investigation is ongoing, the FBI said.

Meanwhile, the FBI and police were responding to a suspicious package near the New Jersey Transit station in Elizabeth.

Sorry to go OT but I’ve been writing as self therapy today. My latest:

NIGHTFALL
(to the tune of “Black day in July” by Gordon Lightfoot)

Beneath the darkened sky,
Beneath the darkened sky,
Burning ash is falling and
The world has gone awry.
You can sense the rising anger,
As the people rush the streets,
And the poor man doesn’t care now
If he starves or if he eats.

Beneath the darkened sky,
Beneath the darkened sky,
There’s a thousand footsteps marching
And the tension is running high.
There’s a rebellion underway now
With little time to acclimate,
Now they’ve reached the ivory tower and they’re set to storm the gate.

Beneath the darkened sky,
Beneath the darkened sky,
There’s gunfire all around us, city wars that never cease,
They don’t want your law and order, it’s open season on the police,
And the crying of the widows can’t repair the broken peace.

Beneath the darkened sky.

In the office of the minister,
There’s little that is known for sure.
It’s quite tough to get a message
Through the mess of urban wreckage.
So they gather close together,
And appeal to powers higher,
Because society is burning
and there’s no escaping from the fire.

Beneath the darkened sky,
Beneath the darkened sky
Now we know for certain what the devil has in store,
For the sons and the daughters
Of the ones who came before.
Witness how the evil game is played,
And don’t bother keeping score.

Beneath the darkened sky,
Beneath the darkened sky,
There’s the faintest breath of morning
On the far horizon line.
The buildings lie in ruins
And the people? much the same.
There’s the shadow of the good man,
As he hangs his head in shame.
How did such disaster happen?
Will we ever understand
How we ended up so distant
From the place where we began?

Not surprising if they did a controlled demolition of the found devices. Standard practice. What’s found in the tub will generally tell you everything you need to know, and you don’t have actual people going

“Green wire or red wire? This looks really fucked up.”

“I don’t know, man. Sometimes you have to take your best guess.”

I was a traffic signal dude, I preferred vuarnet nautilux blue blocking sunglasses. They totally mess up color recognition, really bad when you are working with about 32 different color combinations of wire. I learned not to cut wires until I verified the color without my glasses.

The Army is reexamining the cases of at least 73 soldiers who it kicked out under other-than-honorable circumstances between 2009 and 2015 because it may have run afoul of a federal law intended to help ensure troops aren’t punished for mental health issues that were actually caused by their military service.

At issue is a provision in the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that requires all the military branches to consider whether service-connected behavioral health might have played a role in whatever misconduct officials are using as their reasoning for separating a military member.

Any servicemember who’s served in a combat zone in the previous two years who’s also been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress or traumatic brain injury is supposed to get additional scrutiny before commanders discharge him or her for a law or rule violation - particularly since a less-than-honorable discharge makes them ineligible for mental health treatment or any other veterans benefits.

Why Hillary Lost: A Premature Obit

The blame game has already begun. Here’s where Democrats will point the finger if she loses.

On the high, crenelated ramparts of Castle Clinton, a chill breeze is stirring ― a faint but gnawing sense that the White Walkers are coming, wearing “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” baseball caps on their skinless noggins.

If Donald Trump does sack the fortress, no one who lost the battle will want to admit it was Hillary Clinton’s fault. It will have had nothing to do with, say, “transparency” or calling bearded villagers “deplorables” or the Iraq War vote or the simple fact that middle-of-the-road Clintonism ran out of gas as a public philosophy.

No, other individuals, groups and forces will have to be blamed. In fact, they already are, pre-emptively. If Trump wins, we’re all going to be too busy moving to Canada to read the postmortems (or write them), so we offer them to you now:

- - CUT - -(And then a list of 9 reasons follows…and I don’t want to spoil the ‘fun’ so more at link)

They don’t need an actual downturn. In the fantasy world created by Fox and not really contradicted by the rest of the media, the stock market has been going down and unemployment has been going up for the last eight years. It’s just as good as a real recession—the rich are raking it in hand over fist, and the idiots will vote for the GOP to “turn things around”.

In Israel, they profile. They’ve done an unbelievable job.

Which absolutely and completely ignores that there have been a series of stabbings and other attacks against Israelis by Palestinian terrorists in the past year. That’s not exactly an unbelievable job. It’s reality of what happens when terror groups change tactics and law enforcement has to adjust.

Hamas has stopped carrying out rocket attacks against Israel and we’re seeing more lone-wolf style attacks. There’s been a reduction in bombings, which is due to a change in tactics and a consequence of building the security fence. The fence encouraged terror groups to seek alternative means, which meant rocket attacks. Israel’s response was Iron Dome, and that too has seen a stalemate, so the terror groups have adjusted tactics again, so lone wolf knife attacks have been on the rise. These are far more difficult to intercept and identify.

We are seeing something similar with IS - more lone-wolf attacks, with IS claiming responsibility regardless of whether they are directly involved or not. Tactics can range from bombings to stabbings or shootings. With the nearly unlimited number of potential targets, it’s quite difficult to stop any one attack. Law enforcement would have to be 100% effective in stopping attacks, whereas a terrorist only needs to get it done once. And law enforcement isn’t 100% effective. Even if it’s 99% effective, that means that there will be attacks that get through.

An interesting take on Trump’s relationship with the Jewish community. Complicated is perhaps an oversimplification of how he views the Jewish community. He’s gone from thinking that they are the best in certain fields, and prefers them over other groups (as for renting apartments to) to pushing anti-Semitic stereotypes and then having his flacks claim it was no such thing (it’s a LEO badge).

Throughout, Trump shows bigotry and doesn’t get anything other than how to try and make a buck.

Trump seems to think that the NYPD is “timid” (his choice of words) in going after terrorists. He thinks that they know who the terrorists are, but aren’t going after them.

That’s verging on conspiracy theory territory once again.

Not particularly surprising. The NYPD is anything but timid. In fact, they’ve often been accused of being overly aggressive. And if they know of these potential terrorists, it’s to see who else they lead to, so there’s a delicate dance between acting too soon and letting other involved persons escape, or acting too late after an attack occurs.

I mean I’m sorry but Clinton’s problems pale with Trump. She’s not perfect but she’s intelligent and has capable advisers. Trump meanwhile is ignorant and despises the very idea of advisers.

The problem with that is nobody cares. Hillary has been demonized by the right for 25 years and it’s stuck. She has well thought out positions on 38 issues from the drought in the western states to Altzheimer’s disease.

Nobody cares about those either.

Trump has no positions on anything, just says “believe me”. And a growing number of people do.

Saw plenty of Trump campaign signs on tents in the Grove (where we tailgate). Not one Clinton sign but that is what I expected.

Heard lots of conversations about the confederate flag and playing Dixie.

The Art market has tanked, maybe the should have bought some Garfunkel.

Prices for works by young artists such as Scott-Douglas and Lucien Smith soared with the auction market in 2014, sometimes reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars, when they were traded like bull-market tech stocks. But since auction sales began to drop in late 2015, the emerging names have been hit especially hard. Sales by some artists are down 90 percent or more as the glut of work and nosebleed prices scare away buyers.

Unless the voting restrictions some states have put in—and many of which have been prevented by the courts—severely dampens the vote, minority turnout should give Hillary a boost on election day. But that were even at this point is alarming.

149
lawhawk  Sep 19, 2016 • 7:08:06am

So, the Tax Foundation tries to score Trump’s tax plan. It goes predictably as one would expect. Trump adds trillions in debt, without growing the economy as he claims it would. It’s not revenue neutral, and there’s no way to get there without substantial cuts to core government services.

In other words, it’s the standard issue GOP tax policy.

The difference here is that his current tax “plan” is about half the size of his original giveaway to the rich. He’s still giving the majority of all tax cuts to the 1%, but they’re not seeing the same size tax cut as before. And the result of those massive tax cuts is adding anywhere from $3 to $6 trillion in debt over 10 years using static scoring (less using dynamic scoring, but still significant given the $1 to $2.6T in debt added).

Meanwhile, Clinton’s tax plan would essentially create a new tax bracket for the wealthiest Americans as a surtax - while everyone else sees no significant changes on the brackets. There’s some adjustments to various deductions and addbacks, but the Foundation has found that Clinton’s plan would reduce the debt over the 10 year period.

Most in the NYC metro area have been living with the threat of being a target for terrorists claiming to do so as part of jihad for more than 20 years. From 1993 to the present, there have been numerous attacks and attempted attacks against the WTC, Port Authority properties, and lone wolf attacks. NYC takes these in stride at this point. Vigilance and a wary eye for things out of the ordinary, but going on with the daily routine.

re: #149 lawhawk

Sort of hesitant to use that given their unrealistic assessment of the GDP boost caused by Trump’s plan. They admit that the impacts of Trump’s plan are
1. Massive cuts to nonmilitary spending (the exact programs that have fiscal multipliers greater than 1)
2. The cuts go overwhelmingly to the top 1% (Fiscal Multiplier much less than 1)
3. And that even given their rosy GDP projections, it adds a massive amount to the deficit

Trump’s plan is essentially cutting essential programs and using debt to finance tax cuts. It’s a fucking joke to pretend that’s going to boost the economy long term.

The Tax Foundation’s assessment is one that gives him the most benefit of doubt, and gives the most favorable assumptions, and it’s still a shitshow of epic proportions re: tax policy and fiscal responsibility.

Trump can’t exactly tout their analysis (I’m sure if he had competent advisers, they’d try to use them since the Foundation is among the more respected outfits on tax policy, even if they’re a conservative policy shop). The scoring shows just how badly this screws anyone but the 1%. Even in the most favorable analysis, it is a massive giveaway to the rich, while everyone else suffers for it.

I don’t get it either. George Wallace was all-in for maintaining segregation and Jim Crow laws, but wasn’t also interested in stripping rights like a free press and speech. But his segregationist positions (and Barry Goldwater’s pro-war rhetoric) were enough to annihilate them in that election.

Now its all that plus banning abortion and contraception (Goldwater’s wife was on the board of Planned Parenthood in Phoenix), banning religions and inserting one narrow view of Christianity into public schools (and privatising the same), annihilating the very same, privatise the VA. All those things are how a fair portion of Mr. Trump’s supporters got where they are.

Steven Rosenfield of Alternet gives his opinion on eleven ways he thinks a Trump presidency would be a disaster.

alternet.org

Problem is, Trump supporters don’t likely read Alternet (except to troll certain articles in the Disqus comment section).

The so-called mainstream media, such as television networks and major newspapers, are the ones positioned to call these things out, but don’t. I suspect a subscriber to the New York Times is not going to unsubscribe because he is told the truth about a subject.

Without the mainstream media reporting facts, we have right-wing sites that cater to the right wing, and left-wing sites that do the same for the left, but no one in the middle weighing the arguments and showing which ones are lacking.

The media turning into stenographers and opting out of the need to inform the public seems to be the issue. The media doesn’t even seem to care that one candidate wants to restrict the I Amendment in relation to the press.

Business is good this quarter, we’ll worry about next quarter in the next quarter. - newspapers and television

But wait - weren’t people’s lives saved by the fact that people saw something and said something?

But beyond that, if someone were doing something like cooking up explosives in his house/apartment, who would know? HOW would they know? He could bring in all the supplies he’d need for IEDs in normal looking boxes and bags. He’d probably only work on them with the blinds/curtains closed. You can transport them in backpack like EVERYBODY carries, and if you look at a lot of high school and college students’ packs, they’re stuffed pretty full!

The NYT reports that the the alleged bomber’s family had sued Elizabeth NJ over discrimination, claiming that they were harassed by the city over shutting their restaurant over noise complaints:

It was open 24 hours a day, but neighbors complained about rowdy crowds that would gather at the place, often after midnight.

Dean McDermott, who lives near the restaurant in Elizabeth, said he found patrons loitering in his yard and urinating in his driveway.

Responding to the complaints, the City Council passed an ordinance that would force the restaurant to close late at night, the mayor said.

“The City Council voted to shut it down at 10 p.m.,” he said. “They kept getting complaints from neighbors, it was a distress to people in the neighborhood.”

The Rahamis did not comply, according to neighbors.

On one occasion when the police came to force the restaurant to close, one of Mr. Rahami’s older brothers got in a fight with a police officer and was arrested. Before the case could be resolved, Mr. McDermott said, the son fled to his home country, Afghanistan.

The mayor confirmed that the Rahami family sued the mayor, the City Council, some 20 police officers, claiming that he had been discriminated against because of his race and ethnicity.

“It was neighbor complaints, it had nothing to do with his ethnicity or religion,” the mayor said. “It had to do with noise and people congregating on the streets.”

A frequent patron of the restaurant, Ryan McCann, 33, said Ahmad Rahami was friendly and did not seem outwardly angry. Rather, Mr. McCann said, he was obsessed with fast cars, specifically Honda civics custom built to race.

It wouldn’t be the first time I heard that Da’esh is actually an Israeli thing. I spent yesterday telling a friend of mine why Hillary should be elected president. Not only why Trump shouldn’t, but why she should. I also told her I would be making sure she and her family were going to be voting on election day.

The comments sure aren’t: It is a dogpile I couldn’t separate if I waded in with a Tazer.

I cannot hold my own there the Gish Gallop and crank magnetism is so deep.
