Donald Trump Jr. Compares Syrian Refugees to a Bowl of Poisoned Skittles Candy

Vile
Politics • Views: 67,798

Donald Trump Jr. has blocked the LGF account after we revealed several of his associations with antisemites and white supremacists, but we have ways to see what he’s tweeting anyway — and today he tweeted something so ugly and yes, deplorable, that I did an honest to goodness double take:

The dehumanization factor is off the scale here; he’s literally comparing desperate people fleeing violence, war and persecution to a bowl of poisoned candy. Please note the official campaign logos on this image; this seems to be something they’re actually using as promotional material for their sick, un-American views.

And it’s very likely the use of “Skittles” is a racist dog whistle intended to evoke the killing of Trayvon Martin among Trump’s right wing base of supporters. It’s pretty safe to say that will be the first thing many of them think of.

Does anyone remember when we got our first look at Trump’s opinion regarding “others”?

It was his racist butler down in Florida. Most people just laughed that off as the rantings of an old man.

Little did we know then how deeply it runs in the Trumps.

Wait. Wut?

This is the same Trump campaign that says we need to get rid of food safety regs.

In which case, the manufacturers could throw whatever crap they wanted into your food.

Now, they’re dehumanizing refugees. Figures.

This logic could be extended to almost anything. Using the same logic, you could advocate aborting all pregnancies, or killing everyone under the age of 18 because some fraction of them would end up murderers.

Not to racism, not other kinds of violence, not to abuse of power, etc.

And given that studies have shown that immigrants tend to have lower violent crime rates, if one was worried about being killed than immigrants are not the cause.

LMAO.

Benny and Ed Morrissey are busy complaining about the NFL and SI because of their “politics”.

Never mind that the NFL covered up a dangerous disease afflicting current and former players - resulting in CTE. The NFL covered up the concussion mess for years. They put their profits ahead of the safety of the players.

Or that reporting about these things exposes the ugly side of sports.

After the CTE link was exposed, I stopped watching the NFL. It’s not fun watching guys playing their hearts out and knowing that any of them could be a hit away from a crippling disease that will be a ticking time bomb leading to suicide, dementia, urges to violence, etc.

There’s no joy in watching, and I can’t bring myself to follow the games.

Sundays have never been so liberating since.

Dear Mr. Trump, 9/11 Responders Had To Share Their Tax Returns. Why Won’t You Do The Same?

In order to submit a claim to the 9/11 Compensation Fund, 20,000 first responders, volunteers and survivors were required to produce multiple years of tax returns. I ask you to do the same. Considering that you’re running for president, it shouldn’t be too much to ask you to meet the same standard to which the brave men and women who responded to 9/11 have been held.

Might be about to have to go internet-free for… well, a whiiiiile. My internet connection on this computer is unbelievably weak, while the rest of the family’s connections are rock-solid. No one knows what’s wrong. They’re going to send someone out to look at the machine, but I’m pretty sure they won’t find anything they can fix. I get I could get a couple hundred feet of cable to string all over the house to connect directly to my dad’s router, but I don’t like the idea of sticking cable all over my parents’ house. I’ve already inconvenienced them enough as it is.

I already shut down my barely-activated Netflix account, and I figure I can check email, Facebook, and Twitter from my phone. The biggest downside is how hard it’s going to be to job-hunt with no real Internet access.

40% of former players suffer from brain injuries. Lifetime impairment for a few years of glory. And the NFL covered it the hell up.

Just back from my village budget meeting, wrestling with figures to get the budget within state law. (State law says an incorporated city may not have more than 30% cash on hand in relation to budgeted funds; we have 93%). Funds may be placed into special sinks for emergencies, so a bunch will be switched into water, sewer, and park; I asked for a bunch to be put into a sink for the public library.

The park also will have a special expenditure to raze our public bathrooms and replace them (the current ones are not ADA compliant and largely non-functional) - something the village has been talking about for years before I moved here. Cashing out CDs the village holds at Wells Fargo at the fantastic interest rate of 0.05% and moving them to our local agricultural bank.

The pay rise for village employees I asked for was approved. Long budget meeting (last year it took twenty minutes.

Internment camps in the US?

Still legal, because the SC decision that upheld the government’s right to hold Japanese Americans in camps has never been overturned.

From the decision:

It was because we could not reject the finding of the military authorities that it was impossible to bring about an immediate segregation of the disloyal from the loyal that we sustained the validity of the curfew order as applying to the whole group. In the instant case, temporary exclusion of the entire group was rested by the military on the same ground.

But wait—aren’t we supposed to simply stop buying Skittles if they habitually poison us? That’s how TEH FREE MARKET™ (PBUI) works, right? Shouldn’t we wait until at least one Syrian refugee commits an objectionable act before we stop “buying” refugees from Syria? If we just stop buying Skittles because reasons, that’s a boycott, which the Supreme Court always called “An illegal combination in restraint of Trade”. So wouldn’t boycotting Syria be bad, too? I’m confoozled!

If I gave you a bowl of bull testicles, and told you that only one was poisoned and would kill you — unless you were black, in which case 27 would kill you, would you eat one? No? That’s the problem with police brutality in America.

If I gave you a bowl of deep fried pig anuses and told you 20 of them were poisoned and would kill you, would you eat one? No? That’s the right wing nut job problem in America.

Why bother with this when most of us know first, it will be a clusterfk in which Hannity will demonstrate how many times he can kiss Trump’s *ss, and second, we know neither Trump nor Hannity cares one sh*t for anyone who is not in their socioeconomic class? She does. Lately she has been telling some Republican Trumpers that want to talk over her to shut up. She is learning a lot in this election and you can see her grow.

She hung out for some time with Keith Olbermann so some of that take no shitism may be coming out of her from what she learned from him.

Ya gotta hand it to the Deadspin guys-when they do a gag, they do it right:

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 11 years since the infamous Love Boat Scandal.

Here’s a quick refresher. (A quickie?)

The Vikings were nearing the end of their bye week on Oct. 6, 2005. A Thursday night. With no game to prepare for on Sunday, a number of players took to Lake Minnetonka for a cruise that soon got out of control.

It ended with 17 players, including cornerback Fred Smoot, quarterback Daunte Culpepper, left tackle Bryant McKinnie and running back Moe Williams, among others, allegedly participating in a water-borne bacchanalia. The sex party occurred on two charter boats — one fittingly named the Minnetonka Queen.

The “Love Boat Scandal” was born.

The folks over at Deadspin wanted to make sure the legend never dies, so they bought a Legacy Brick, one of thousands of personalized commemorative markers fans buy and then are placed in a plaza outside the stadium. Before the home opener Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers, Deadspin issued a challenge to fans to find it among the 12,000 bricks outside the stadium.

It wasn’t long before a fan found it. The brick itself reads “To My Beloved, The Minnetonka Queen.”

A sure sign she is not what they want because she won’t be tough on the banks, probably get us in another war or three and won’t do anything about college expenses and green issues.

They threw a big fit with the Republican endorsements and the threat that Hillary was kissing up to John Negroponte and “gasp” Henry Kissinger. All proof she is the wrong candidate and why there really is no difference between her and Trump.

The BoBs and the total loons like the Caucus99 bunch aren’t going to be reached by anything she does. The Caucus99 loons hate Bernie now too as a sellout (although at other times, they say that he was physically beaten up at the convention and forced to support Hillary.)

The reason I think it’s an effective ad is that it mostly features Republicans who Democrats don’t totally hate, or who, at one time actually acted like they had some sense (Susan Collins.) I think she’s going for fence-sitters, not necessarily Republicans—saying, if even these somewhat sane Republicans think Trump is nuts, maybe you don’t want to go there.

Who knows, with this crazy election. Even Charles P. Pierce, who you know I love, pissed me off when he said that if she accepted Kissinger’s endorsement, he wouldn’t vote for her. Now, I’m no fan of Kissinger, but what the fuck. I enthusiastically support her, but even if I didn’t, I would crawl across broken glass to vote for her to make damn certain that the vulgar yam lunatic never gets any closer to the White House than his new garish DC hotel. WAY too much at stake to equivocate or throw hissy fits about anything.

Yeah the salts tend to taste bleah. Looking at the Wikipedia Oral rehydration therapy page, the usual liquid is pure water, but in an emergency other liquids can be used, but can affect the efficiency of the solution (take note, I’m not a dietician).

What I would do is to look into something which complements the salty taste, e.g. stock or licorice (you know, how certain stuff seems far-out but go very well together (like Granny Smith apples and mild curry powder gently sprinkled on top)).

Another option is to look into the nutritional drinks used by dieticians in the gastro-enterological and geriatric fields, I know some of them come in electrolyte replenishing formulations (check with your local pharmacy (at least they are who have them here)). Be warned tho, they can cost a bit and not all brands and flavors are hits.

There’s no real evidence drinking that stuff is any better than drinking plain ol’ water. Making sports drinks palatable usually requires added salt and/or sugar, which kinda defeats the weight loss effects of exercise.

Most marathon runners just drink water during their events, AFAIK.

Minnesota Restaurant Posts ‘Muslims Get Out’ Sign

Most Americans have no desire to understand Muslims; they just want them to Get Out, even if there aren’t any around.

(For context, Lonsdale is a good two hours by car south of St. Cloud, which is where the mall stabbing occurred. It’s not far from my hometown; I would estimate it has a Muslim population of exactly zero.)

You are almost certainly correct.

The estimated population is only about 3,843.

This is a small town that no one cares about, and probably most people, even from within the state, have not even heard of. Population is about 95% White.

And yet in small towns “no one cares about” (that town has more people than my whole county) is where liberals need to exert pressure to get elected as well.

(My small town of 124 is roughly ninety percent Caucasian, one African-American, and rest Native Americans. I don’t know but I suspect I got most of the minority votes in the last election.)

I grew up in a town of about the same size. The people that live there certainly care about it quite a bit.

The problem is that most of them have just never experienced any racial or religious diversity in any meaningful way. I don’t know the best way to address that problem, but dismissing them out of hand isn’t it.

What are the liquor laws like in China?

Loosely enforced. You can buy baijiu (liquor beginning at 70 proof and higher), beer or wine at most any supermarket or convenience store. The drinking age is officially 18, but most people ignore it, so it’s not uncommon to see middle school students posting photos of their drinking beer at their 9th grade graduation dinner party. That said, it’s very rare to see a teenager totally blitzed, even in college. You’re more likely to see a middle-aged businessman or government official totally blitzed, because drinking baijiu is a traditional part of male bonding here.

While Flint has not been under an emergency manager since 2015, it still has a board which may dictate some things the city can and cannot do.

The City of Flint decided to sue the State of Michigan for its role in the destruction of its water system; in response, the board has removed the city’s right to sue the state.

The article continues at the link above, the first few paragraphs below:

LANSING — Days after Flint Mayor Karen Weaver served notice that her city might file a lawsuit against the State of Michigan over the Flint drinking water crisis, the state removed Flint’s ability to sue.

Though Flint has not been under a state-appointed emergency manager since April 2015, the state still exerts partial control over the city through a five-member Receivership Transition Advisory Board, whose members are appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder.

The board moved quickly to change the rules under which Flint is governed so that the city cannot file a lawsuit without first getting approval from that state-appointed board.

In other words, Flint cannot sue the state without getting the state to sign off on it first.

The problem with protest culture is that it has become an incubator for the kind of disaffection which asserts that voting is useless.

Which is ironic in that the whole point of protesting is to draw attention to an observed wrong / injustice & try to end it. Self defeating.

We are dealing with a group of people who see politics as a form of self-expression (i.e. public temper tantrum) and group identification

They go off and proudly register an “independent” to show that they are not going to compromise their ideals by associating with a party. And then are upset to find out that in many states, independents are not allowed to vote in closed primary elections.

That is not “rigging” the election, those are the long-established rules.

And I am still convinced that a good deal of the Bernie buzz was a matter of ratfucking and messaging from the GOP, who would have welcomed an easy target like BS against their own candidate.

Did you catch this already? Trump is upset that the bombing suspect got medical treatment for gunshot wounds.

bbc.com

Later at a campaign rally in Fort Myers, Florida, Mr Trump decried Mr Rahami’s treatment for gunshot wounds and his legal representation, which is his constitutional right under the Fifth Amendment.

“But the bad part, now we will give him amazing hospitalization. He will be taken care of by some of the best doctors in the world,” Mr Trump said.

“He will be given a fully modern and updated hospital room. And he’ll probably even have room service knowing the way our country is.”

He suggested that any punishment would be too lenient on Mr Rahami. “What a sad situation,” he added.

Mr Trump repeated calls for “extreme vetting” of new arrivals, which would include an assessment of whether potential immigrants share American values.

Room service? Apparently Trump has never stayed in a hospital as a commoner. Everyone gets “room service” — you eat what they bring you, and if you don’t eat, too bad.

Hell, prisons even bring meals to guys in solitary. I suppose he’d rather they starve to death in their cells.

I doubt he cares if the guy is an American citizen. He’s one of those “eye for an eye” people who believe anyone accused of a crime should suffer: no hospital care, no food, no decent lodging while imprisoned. You know, all those things that violate basic human rights.

Certainly the knuckle-draggers supporting him believe the same things, unless the culprit happens to be their cousin Bubba, who got picked up for running a meth lab.

Again, it is all about stressing his “otherness”: his Muslim faith and his immigrant background and how that poses a threat to True White Americans.

It does not fit the narrative to portray him as a mentally unstable loser with a lot of person problems who turned to random acts of violence as a solution.

Because that is exactly how all the white-trash “lone wolves” are portrayed.

Trump, in the mold of most authoritarian regimes, doesn’t seem to be entirely against the idea of trying the accused. No, I imagine he thinks the appropriate measures to use are to force the accused to make a “confession,” then try them in a kangaroo court merely as a formality. The guilty verdict already decided, the only question is whether or not the state will execute them.

Hillary Clinton took a comfortable lead over Donald Trump in the latest weekly NBC News-Survey Monkey national tracking poll out Tuesday, earning 50 percent of support among likely voters compared to 45 percent for the real estate mogul.

With absentee and early voting underway in several states, the survey, which previously reported results from registered voters, now accounts for likely voters. Last week’s survey of registered voters found a narrower race between the two major party candidates, with Clinton leading Trump 48 to 44 percent and only 42 to 40 percent when third-party candidates were taken into account. The former secretary of state did better among registered voters this week, leading Trump 49 percent to 43 percent in a two-way matchup.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Why is it that like clockwork there are officer involved shootings of unarmed black drivers? Terence Crutcher is just the latest.

His car broke down. Cops arrived. He had his hands up when he was not only tasered, but shot to death.

Cops initially lied about what happened too - claiming that he didn’t have his hands up and didn’t respond to police commands. He is seen on video showing his hands in the air.

It didn’t matter. They still tasered and shot him. He was killed. Murdered.

If all lives matter, what about Crutcher? That doesn’t matter?

Black lives certainly don’t seem to matter to cops.

Demanding accountability from law enforcement and better policing isn’t asking too much from cops. They have a tough job to do, and we put our lives in their hands under a wide range of circumstances. The least we should demand is that they not shoot early and often whenever they see minorities on the side of the road, playing with toy guns in open carry states, or otherwise acting like everyone else in society but being forced to play by different rules because of their skin tone.

Donald Trump thinks we need extreme vetting of immigrants (a nonsensical term, but one that’s a hit with his brain dead supporters), and that Muslims are the gravest threat to the nation in decades, all while ignoring that there were two bomb plots yesterday involving white guys - one at a school in UT. Neither gets the kind of press as the NYC area bomber (who injured 29 with one blast that went off in Chelsea and may have been responsible for the bombing in Seaside), but those threats made were of a terroristic nature. That happens nearly daily - and most media don’t pick up on it.

Profiling of the sort that Trump suggests definitely wouldn’t pick up on it.

And the right wing bigot brigade certainly will excuse it. These white guys who make bombing threats are merely lone wolves, or mentally ill, or excuse the incident entirely because the target was acceptable to them (see attacks on abortion clinics, etc.) Or they point out that leftists commit bombings - like the Animal Liberation Front or other fringe groups.

But that’s just it, isn’t it. Trump’s profiling / vetting wouldn’t catch any of those. And those domestic attacks are the overwhelming majority of bombings/threats/arsons/incendiaries in the nation every year.

This one isn’t about winning, it’s about averting the collapse of civilization.

The only Trump supporters whose arguments I can begin to understand are the ones who believe that America is going to collapse anyways, so let’s elect Trump and get it over with so we can hit bottom and start the process of rebuilding.

I do not agree with their views, but it at least they are based on an accurate assessment of DT’s abilities.

Folks need to be vigilant over the polling and complacency in GOTV, but also need to chill the f out. People are realizing just how awful Trump truly is.

When GHWB is apparently signaling that he’s going to vote for Clinton over Trump (risking excommunication from GOP by none other than Reince), you know that the GOP is doing poorly.

It’s actually even worse than that for the GOP - they have no active ground game in FL. Trump claims that he’ll send them about $2M to head into November, but they haven’t seen the money yet in FL. Vaporware promises.

If a Democrat had not stepped up with a ground game in a key battleground state in September, you’d be climbing the walls and demanding heads roll. With Trump, media is just like meh. It’s as though the rules don’t apply to him (reality is that the media refuses to apply the same rules to him as to everyone else - especially Clinton). If Trump were held to Clinton’s standards, he’d have washed out in the primaries.

I requested an absentee ballot last month, but had not received anything back,so I sent the county election clerk an email. No worries. Absentee ballots are going out next week. I also got an email from the US Embassy in Beijing advising expats that we can drop off our ballots there, or at any of the four consulates, to be placed in a diplomatic pouch for delivery to the USA.

Or I can do my usual thing of waiving my right to a secret ballot, and email a PDF. For some reason, visiting the consulate in Guangzhou to retain the secrecy has somewhat more appeal, despite the added expense. I could manage it during the Oct. 1 National Holiday.

sltrib.com

“Racism is the reason for my hunger strike,” the email reads, “to take this conversation deeper, to the truth, core and roots.” He describes black men as “the most racist, bigoted group of homo sapien primates” and titles the message “In honor of Skylar Dore” — an allusion to a white Louisiana police chief who was fired after a profanity-laced Facebook post about the death of white police officers in Baton Rouge.

He also said he was a “radical Islamic jihadist”. Wonder where he got that idea from.

Barefoot Grin  Sep 20, 2016 • 7:01:20am

I know that we could point to any number of instances as “signal” in the rise of the alt-right, but my first understanding of the potency of these forces came in the aftermath of the murder of Trayvon Martin. The bare facts of the case seemed to point to the obvious conclusion that a teenager had been gunned down while minding his own business by a man with an unhealthy fixation on policing and “black” crime in his neighborhood. Then I saw how quickly the internet filled up with memes of Trayvon as a gangster who was out on a crime spree, with arguments that GZ only averted death at the hands of this child-man-thug by the grace of the gun. And then it became an article of faith. And then I understood that all black men (and women) were the Trayvons of alt-right fantasy. Empathy, understanding—these are to be mocked because there is no point. Now, by extension, the BLM movement can only be understood as a terrorist movement operated by opportunistic thugs. Cops have a duty to save themselves and us through the power of the gun.

This psychology has a powerful hold on the minds of the alt-right and, I believe, has crystalized into an unbreakable world view that sees all “others” as dangerous predators. I think the “deplorable” distinction may work to peal off a few reasonable Trump supporters, but I’m coming to the conclusion that many will simply say “I’m not a racist; I’m a common-sense law-and-order person.”

Drove through rural Indiana on our trip to Nashville. As might be expected, saw a number of Trump signs in people’s yards. But we also saw a number of Dump Pence signs, probably from before he was selected as the VP candidate. Encouraging that at least some residents of the state recognize Pence for the disaster he is.

As a side note, through all the long car trips I’ve made in the past, I never noticed an interesting fact. If a lightning bug is lit when it hits your car windshield, the goop continues to glow for several minutes on the windshield. Makes for an unusual view as you drive down the road.

Edit: changed gop to goop in the comment above. Hoping the election does the same thing. ;-)

They will not necessarily vote Hillary, but they will start to cancel out a lot of the support that DT has picked up from the extreme right.

Remember, a lot of his supporters hate the GOP nearly as much as they hate the Democrats are and voting for him to spite both of them.

BeachDem  Sep 20, 2016 • 8:34:21am

re: #390 Barefoot Grin

Really thoughtful analysis. I wish someone would do a Venn diagram of the “alt-right” and the “regular right.” I believe that the main non-overlapping distinction would be the overt vs. covert beliefs. YMMV

The fact that Obama has not confiscated the guns in either of his terms is just proof that he was simply softening things up for Hillary to administer the coup de grace.

Would the USPS really process something like that?

Yup. They like money too! When it says “No Postage Required If Mailed Within the United States” that’s exactly what it means. Just wrap the brick in manilla paper. Who knows what’s inside it? Nothing a dog would alert to, and it’s not the USPS’s job to investigate if the package is inert. Works a treat with any kind of junk mail.

no.

The rule is covered under the official Post Office Domestic Mail Manual code 8.4.6, “BRM may not be used for any purpose other than that intended by the permit holder, even when postage is affixed. In cases where a BRM card or letter is used improperly as a label, the USPS treats the item as waste.”

And that works for an unwrapped brick.

GOP policy expert predicts debate failure for Trump: ‘He can’t fake his way through 90 minutes’

But, according to CNN contributor and Hoover Institution research fellow Lanhee Chen, the real estate developer and former reality TV star won’t be able to wing it in this debate like he did during the GOP primaries.

“He can’t fake his way through 90 minutes,” said Chen, in an appearance on CNN’s “Party People” podcast with Kevin Madden and Mary Katherine Ham.

Chen, who worked on the presidential campaigns for Mitt Romney and Marco Rubio, said voters in the general election expect to hear more substance than GOP primary voters.

“The 90-minute general election format makes it a lot harder to one line your way through it,” Chen said. “I think it’s going to be very, very hard for Donald Trump to spend 90 minutes bumper-stickering. I think he’s got to have something.”

Also, it’s likely that the GOP loses seats in the House. Don’t worry about this election. Obama’s going to ensure victory. And he will. He doesn’t lose.

I was about to make a despairsnark remark about the midterms, but then I realized they (especially in 2014) involved a bunch of Dems pushing Obama away (Grimes of KY the most egregious example). HRC, on the other hand, has literally embraced him. Hopefully that results in a lasting lesson on the importance of presenting a united front.

GOP keeps forgetting that Obama defeated them. Twice. By clear margins. They forget that most attacks, especially personal ones, just bounce off him because most people (those who are not raving bigots) find him an intelligent and affable fellow even if they disagree with his politics and policies.

Impeachment is off the table if the Democrats take the Senate. Paul Ryan will hold a few ceremonial votes to keep his wingnuts happy but they won’t pass congress even.

I wouldn’t count on that. Look at all the votes to repeal Obamacare. They know they’ll fail but they keep doing it. Over and over.

I’ve said from Day 1 that Homeland Security was dumb. All of the agencies (or their predecessors) that are in Homeland Security were in different departments for a reason. The Secret Service, for example, was part of the Treasury Department for a very important reason: one of their main priorities is to stop counterfeiting of American currency. The Department was created for the sake of doing something but it didn’t really do anything, and one could argue it made things worse because it actually added a layer of bureaucracy to the federal government rather than streamlining it like it was supposed to.

Good to see Hillary’s poll numbers inching back up a bit. It positions her better in the eyes of our wunnerful media for the debate coming up Monday night. They can’t automatically say she has been falling in them since she was sick and or called half of America deplorable…blah the blah.

That said, Johnson’s idea that DHS should be folded into the FBI is rather dumb. I’d prefer the agencies with DHS be returned to their prior departments, that would at least make some sense.

Agreed. And there could still be like an Office of Homeland Security to assist with administration and coordination between the departments.

Unfamiliar with Pyrenees, and my knee-jerk reaction is always “Do it! Do it! Take the doggie home!!” so I probably can’t offer any useful advice.
But I think you should do it, and take a pup or three home.

Trump exploiting the ignorance of his base, as usual.

Teddy Roosevelt was the first president to fly in an airplane, though he was out of office by the time he did. airspacemag.com

The Wright exhibition team was performing at an air meet in St. Louis when pilot Arch Hoxsey crossed paths with Teddy Roosevelt on October 11, 1910. At the time, Roosevelt was campaigning for Missouri’s state Republican party. In this silent clip, Roosevelt initially refuses Hoxsey’s invitation to fly, but changes his mind.

Typically for TR, this was a very adventurous and daring thing to do at the very dawn of aviation. He was in fact one of the first 500 people to fly in a plane. I don’t think any sitting president flew in a plane before FDR. TR’s flight was risky, flier says

re: #352 Emptor scriptor Remorse

I know I’m late in replying, but I had a Great Pyrenees. We just lost him earlier this year. They are amazingly awesome dogs. Wicked smart, great family dogs, gentle giants, don’t need a whole lot of exercise, and very loyal to their human. That loyalty is why we had to put our Gabriel down much, much sooner than we were ready for. Our boy had arthritis caused by chronic Lymes disease which he had before we adopted him. In January he was diagnosed with cancer and due to his age (8, which is elderly for a GP) and his other health issues, treatment really was not an option, so we tried to just give him pain meds to keep him as comfortable as possible.

But, see, Gabe was my boy, so where I went he followed no matter if I told him to stay. GP, as I said are wicked smart and they do not take commands well unless they want to listen to them. Gabe would get up and follow me, and no pain medication we tried would help. He was in pain. He was a smiley boy, but my poor boy was in pain.

To give you an idea of the heart of these magnificent beasts…when we took Gabey to the vet for the last time my kids insisted on going with us. I told them (I have 6 kids, ages 18, 17, 14, 11, 9, & 7) I was going to stay with Gabe and they could wait in the waiting room, but the kids insisted on staying. Because of his size (120 pounds) Gabe was given a sedative by the vet first, and then she left so we could have privacy while that took effect. My two youngest were up near Gabe’s head, as I was too, and we, of course we’re crying. Gabe’s back legs collapsed under him and he started to lay down but he would not let his front legs buckle or his head drop. I realized it was because he could see my two youngest crying and he was fighting the sedative to try and protect them from whatever was upsetting them. When I had them move back he finally allowed himself to lay down.

I am biased toward GP. They are wonderful animals. Just keep in mind they are stubborn! They also need to be fenced because they believe that any land they see is their property and they will just keep walking. Lastly, they are NOT outdoor dogs. They NEED to be with their people.
