Because he has a beautiful soul.

I started listening to him when I was 15. I remember it very clearly.

Not sure how Trump thinks this will undue the toxic shit he has done, that has led to Mosques being vandalized, and Muslims being attacked. Trump can get fucked.

The first and last time I saw him live was in a little club in San Clemente when I was in high school. There must have been all of dozen of us.

He still looks the same. Wish I could say the same about me.

Listening (again) to the CEO of my evil, too big to fail employer testifying before the Senate Banking Committee this morning.

This is Elizabeth Warren, but even Republicans jumped on the thwack the bank bandwagon.

Sen. Warren to Wells Fargo CEO: “You should resign.” (C-SPAN)

Not a great day.

I’ve seen GNR live 8 times.. 4 with the original line up, 4 with the “Chinese Democracy” team. When Axl is ‘on’, you’d be hard pressed to find a better front man / performer - but if he’s having a bad day.. forget it, the show will be a miserable experience for all involved. He’s insane - but I truly feel its part of what makes him such a compelling artist.

They do realize they live in Minnesota, right?

Minnesota strongly supported the Union war effort, with about 22,000 Minnesotans serving. The 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry was particularly important to the Battle of Gettysburg. Governor Alexander Ramsey happened to be in Washington D.C. when Ft. Sumter was fired upon. He went immediately to the White House and made his state the first to offer help in putting down the rebellion.

Will the traditional playbook work this time for the Clinton campaign?

With fewer than 50 days left, polling shows a tightening national race and — most unnerving to Democrats — a Trump rise in key battleground states. But as Trump’s provocative appeal gains traction, Hillary Clinton is sticking with the traditional playbook: Lots of attack ads, a focus on getting out the vote and intense preparation for next week’s first general election debate.

But Trump, who lacks Clinton’s organized effort on the ground but regularly fills massive arenas, is far from a standard opponent. In the primary, he knocked off more than a dozen rivals who took a basically standard approach to his unpredictable rhetoric.

“Everybody in the primary at one point or another tried to take Donald Trump down in the way you take someone down who says absurd things and none of them worked,” said Rick Tyler, a former aide to primary rival Sen. Ted Cruz. “She’s trying to do more of the same. And more of the same isn’t working.”

The big part of Trump’s advantage was that he was a walking dumpster fire, which meant he got plenty of free press because the media wanted to see what he’d say next. The problem with that is it’s also his major Achille’s Heel, meaning any time he says stupid shit or gets caught in a controversy, the media’s attention on him makes it hard to cover up. We’ve seen plenty of that with his surrogates popping blood vessels and/or neurons on live TV several times this season. Likewise he’s totally dependent on the good graces of the media to keep negative campaign coverage away from the voters.

“The right to discipline his children”? I get told constantly by wingnuts that anything not explicitly written out in the Constitution is not a right. But I guess this is one of those “rights” that we’re expected to believe the Founders totally understood existed but didn’t feel needed to be spelled out.

I’m no statistician. Apparently the polling firm is well-regarded and tested the results against another poll (not sure if the method was duplicated).
Even if we scratch off half those numbers, it’s a pretty terrible result.
The upside (if you can even consider it thus) is that people will say certain things under the condition of anonymity that they wouldn’t say if they were pressed on an issue in person.
I don’t like it. But this is a prejudiced society. I personally voted Green in the Senate this year on their record pushing aggressive emmissions targets and migration fairness.
There might just be a larger proportion of voters interested in environmental issues than social ones.

“The right to discipline his children”? I get told constantly by wingnuts that anything not explicitly written out in the Constitution is not a right. But I guess this is one of those “rights” that we’re expected to believe the Founders totally understood existed but didn’t feel needed to be spelled out.

Bible rights, which trump the constitution, or are the foundation of the constitution, or something, I forget.

This guy is an asshole who should be dealt with by the local authorities, BUT spread of the story is also a social fact that shows a change in our culture.

Let me bend the narrative 45 degrees: In 2016 a Cro-Magnon in Texas abused his kid and everybody in Two Egg Florida (birthplace of Faye Dunaway) will be talking about it.
In 1950, he could have roasted and eaten her, and no one in Pittsburgh would have known about it. There is a very important and poorly-understood implication for our politics and national mental health. High-speed 24/7 news proliferation is warping our sense of community and ability to assess our social environment. Could be good, could be very bad. We haven’t absorbed the effect of (dis)information technology, and it is running away from us at an ever-faster rate.

Bleeding cash

Hillary Clinton spent $645,000 more a day than her opponent Donald Trump last month, but even with her $50 million campaign outlay, she has not been able to pull away from him in the race for the White House.

Clinton’s campaign had its most expensive month to date in August, eclipsing its previous monthly high by more than $12 million. And combined, Clinton and the national Democratic Party paid out $78 million in August, while Trump and the Republican National Committee spent about $47 million.

Targetpractice  Sep 21, 2016 • 5:48:50am

I honestly would not be surprised if Nate is, unconsciously or not, trying to hedge his bets just enough that if Trump wins, he can say “There was always the possibility,” and if Hillary blows Trump out of the water he can say “The polls were inaccurate and thus threw off my model.”

Weaselone  Sep 21, 2016 • 5:51:43am

re: #160 Emptor scriptor Remorse

A couple of points of disagreement

1. For the most part, the Republican candidates were unwilling to aggressively call Trump out on his racism and the BS content of his proposals because they wanted the support of the racist know-nothings among his supporters when he dropped out. Their actual policy proposals were every bit as bad as Trump’s. Attacking any of them on the basis of the few specifics Trump offered would mean they were essentially attacking their own plans. Hillary doesn’t have this problem. She doesn’t need to court the deplorable contingent of the Republican base for votes and she has detailed plans that are substantially different than Trump’s even if the media seems unwilling to cover them or her when she talks about them.

2. Other than Cruz with his evangelical outreach, the Republican ground game in the primaries was weak and the primaries were essentially over by the time he could put it to good effect. That said, he did make strong showings in several states based on these efforts. Clinton at worst is going to head into the election being tied or slightly behind Trump. That difference in ground game could be the margin of victory in a few close battle ground states.

3. Clinton’s tactic has not been to paint Trump as absurd or comical. She’s painted him as dangerous and been deadly serious in doing so.

4. Hillary’s campaign is traditional in the sense the Barack Obama’s was traditional. It’s still not quite the equivalent of how Republican’s campaign. It’s also fairly important to remember that Donald’s primary voters and the general electorate are not the same. Hillary’s not going to reach and peel off his primary supporters. She needs to reach and turn out Democrats and traditionally democratically leaning voters and peel off or drive down the turnout of Republicans who are not attracted to Trump’s substance or style.

We can’t take comfort in the 538 model when it gives us a warm fuzzy then reject it because we don’t like the results. There has been a change, and we had better adjust to the LV electorate in time to fix it.

I think it’s more basic than that.

There’s a very polarized environment and lots of people are locked into their choices with a very narrow group of undecideds that will likely break at the last minute (though I personally think that the debates will show Trump to be the empty suit he is). So, you’ve got a Clinton advantage, but not nearly as great as it should be if you objectively look at their respective qualifications for the job.

Then, when you run the polls as 538 and Sam does at Princeton, you get a distribution of possibilities, and while they still favor a Clinton win, Nate’s model has it running closer than the others.

The NYT actually had a piece yesterday about how pollsters can massage data - they gave 4 pollsters the same data set, and they came to completely different results using the same data. It’s all how they use it.

Odds are Clinton still wins with 538. He’s just forecasting on the odds of a win. That’ll certainly change after the debate. Though I also have to wonder if the media will spin a decisive Clinton win as anything but because Clinton didn’t go total Mortal Kombat and get the flawless victory complete with ripping the heart out of Trump. Or, even if it is a flawless victory, they’ll complain it was too polished or rehearsed, and didn’t let her emotions/feelings come through to connect with voters. She’s up against impossible standards while Trump could light his hair on fire, fling shit at the audience, and puke his guts out, and if he didn’t shit himself, they’ll say he did an admirable job against a credible opponent.

With more people and law enforcement looking out for anything out of the ordinary, it should be expected that there will be more reports of suspicious packages, and checking them out. Add to that the fact that the UN General Assembly is meeting, and you’ve got a whole lot more security in place around NYC, especially on the East Side.

While the Samsung might spontaneously blow up when you look at it wrong and the iPhone no longer has the headphone jack, Apple’s now dealing with two new issues - a hissing sound that occurs when the unit is in heavy use, and a more serious problem - the phone will not switch out of airplane mode requiring replacement of the unit.

There’s a big reason she’s not been able to pull away: Misogyny. It’s going to be that way for a while, until a lot of people realize how much of it is still in our country.

At the same time, all that spending is not just on ads. She’s been setting up GOTV efforts, and it’s already paying off: More early voters are voting for her than Trump.

We are not in a climate where a president will win big in terms of absolute numbers, and the first woman to have a serious shot at president is going to have a much harder time. But she will win.

Karl Rove tried to warn Republicans that Obama was leading them into a “trap”.

And Obama did. He could have released the full document earlier but waited until Birtherism had become an enshrined dogma in the RWNJ worldview before releasing it, at which point True Birthers could not back down without appearing as total dimwits.

So they continue promoting Birtherism and appear as even bigger dimwits.

Memo to the Fraternal Order of Police:

This is the guy who you endorsed over Hillary Clinton, who you didn’t endorse because she didn’t come calling for your endorsement.

Priorities people. Priorities.

Trump thinks police didn’t chase down leads on the Chelsea bomber for reasons. And now think that the Tulsa cop who murdered Terence Crutcher choked or was scared.

Then again, dropping blame on the cop gives an excuse to poor law enforcement training/tactics that shoot first and do your best to not ask questions later. Had there been no video, few would be questioning what happened at the stop. As it is, the cops initially claimed he didn’t have hands up and wasn’t following police direction. Video shows he was.

Clinton wants cops to do a tough job better. Trump doesn’t care as long as the bad guys are killed. If a few other folks (or a whole lot of other folks - especially if they’re black or minorities) are killed, meh.

Not too much. Brian is not too much of a Snowden fan, if you could imagine. Didn’t ask him, but from how he spoke and what he referenced, I would estimate that he disdains Trump.

He also gave good insight into how much stuff does and doesn’t happen, in relation to security/terrorism. When talking about New York, he informed the students about the guy in Utah and other bomb plots that happen and are resolved without them ever hearing about it on television.

He and I plan on keeping in touch.

Belafon  Sep 21, 2016 • 8:35:41am

Joss Whedon and Mark Ruffalo are trying to get people to vote (Daily Kos link):

Joss Whedon fans don’t have to wait for his next project, because it’s here, and it’s as celebrity-packed as an Avengers movie. But you’ll be watching it on Facebook and YouTube (including below), not at the movie theater, and it’s a little more real-life. It does center on a major villain, though: Donald Trump. Yes, Whedon has made an election video, including Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo (more on that in a minute), Scarlett Johansson, Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse Williams, Julianne Moore, Nathan Fillion, Don Cheadle, and President Jed Bartlet himself.

In short, as the video puts it: “Lots of famous people. Lots of famous people. Lots and lots of famous people. A shit ton of famous people. Repeating how important it is.” Although “Sometimes a not-famous person will be mixed in with a famous one, to drive the message home. Because of their unpolished sincerity.” The message, of course, is to register and vote this November.

Whedon has founded the Super PAC Save the Day and put $1 million into helping elect Hillary Clinton. As many as 25 videos are planned. But this first one may have the most important message: Register, vote, and defeat Donald Trump … so that Mark Ruffalo will do a nude scene in his next movie.

I’ll admit I can be critical of Clinton, but that’s not the same as attacking her. I think sometimes people conflate criticism with unfair attacks or wanting that person to fail.

I think people are so wrapped up in the negativity of this election that they have a hard time looking past it. Some even go so far as to weave attacks into hypotheticals. Trump gets a pass on something he says? “OMG IF HILLARY SAID THAT THEY’D BE CALLING HER A NAZI” 1) She’d never say “THAT” (whatever it was Trump said) and 2) aren’t the actual attacks enough to defend?

I’m happy with this shift in strategy. I think it’s a good thing. I hope the media begins to report it. It could make the difference between victory and landslide victory bringing with it the House as well as the Senate.

The criticism seemed 1) like a hedge to me, and 2) ignores the fact that she’s been talking about her policies at her campaign stops. Everything being said about her has been said about Obama. “Why won’t he talk about _____?” “He has been talking about it, the news channels either completely ignore it, or switch programming in the middle of his speech.”

I also think that people might be having a correlation-does-not-equal-causation problem. “She’s talking about her policies and her polls went up” does not mean the first caused the second.

From a North Carolina source:

RALEIGH, N.C.

A federal judge has dismissed a challenge to a North Carolina law that allows magistrates to refuse to marry same-sex couples by citing religious beliefs.

The judge in Asheville dismissed a lawsuit filed by three couples, two gay and one interracial. The judge ruled that the couples lacked legal standing as taxpayers to sue and lacked evidence showing they were harmed directly by the law taking effect in June 2015. Still, U.S. District Judge Max Cogburn wrote there is potential someone could suffer real harm because of the law.

The plaintiffs’ lawyers filed a notice Wednesday that they’ll appeal Tuesday’s ruling to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

North Carolina is one of only two states with such religious-objection laws that are being enforced. About 5 percent of North Carolina’s magistrates have filed recusal notices.

I have been sort of leaning that way too. The media has not helped…they turned her baskets of deplorables into what it was never intended to be. And they have consistently said this whole election is a mud wrestling event and one of the lowest ever.

I know we all like a good Trump take down and she has been right with her words in that manner. But, is it really working? I have a feeling not like it should.

I think it is just another desire by too many Americans that want to see someone other than a politician in the office. They have been told Hillary is nothing but a life-long politician and they buy in. Too many want someone totally different no matter how inexperienced or dangerous.

Take all of your expectations for an intelligent and sincere debate of substance, subtract seven, cut that number in half, and divide by zero.

Remember Matt Lauer’s shitty twinterview? He started by asking the candidates to not talk about each other. Didn’t work. Debates are as close as we’ll get to mud wrestling for the Oval Office. Scoring points with sharp attack lines is going to be the key to “victory” in this one.

Anyone still expecting there to be a “Hillary miracle” at the “debates’ will be sorely disappointed.

She could chance it, stay on subject and refuse to respond to any of Trump’s attacks or insults. But it would be a huge risk because of the three days of spin it would receive. But it would also be riveting television.
1. Hillary outlines policy on economic growth.
2. Trump rebuttal is attack on Clinton Foundation.
3. Lester Holt asks Hillary if she’d like to respond.
4. Hillary says the question was about economic growth, so no thank you. Next question.

About the third time through that cycle Holt would be sweating as much as his fellow Republican Trump.

On April 20, 1966, Don King walked into the Manhattan Tap Room and spotted a man by the name of Sam Garrett—a former employee in King’s racket who owed him $600 on a bet. Sickly, small, and drug-addicted, Garrett was no match for King. But King was in no mood for forgiveness. Their argument very quickly turned into a brawl, and then a beating in the street outside the bar, a beating that ultimately left Garrett dead from his injuries. King claimed self-defense, and witness accounts vary, but for the first officer on the scene, the beating was a brutal, almost demonic assault. In an interview with sportswriter Jack Newfield, Officer Bob Tonne said he saw “a man’s head bouncing off the asphalt pavement like a rubber ball. Then he saw another man standing over him with a gun in his right hand, applying another kick to the head.” Even after he was subdued and the fight was over, “King got in one last vicious kick that Tonne would never forget.”

Despite reports of witness intimidation and attempted bribery, King was convicted of second-degree murder. Normally, this would have meant a life sentence with eligibility for parole after eight and a half years. Oddly, the presiding judge—in a highly controversial decision reached in the privacy of his chambers—set aside the execution of the sentence, in effect changing the conviction-to manslaughter, which allowed King to emerge from prison in less than four years.

Apparently, someone via Twitter seems to think I attacked Mike Pence’s religious beliefs because I called Pence out on his nonsense about Christian beliefs under attack (all while spewing same at a Christian church at a political function - which could be viewed as a violation of the church’s 501(c) status, but I digress).

The problem is Pence and other right wingers using government to impose their religious beliefs on others - a clear and obvious violation of the 1A. Pence doesn’t have a problem with that - only with the govt (specifically the courts) saying that they can’t impose their religious views through govt action because it violates the 1A.

Protecting against 1A violation is therefore transformed by these religious bigots into a 1A violation because they can’t be bigots.

Moments after Mayor Jennifer Roberts pledged transparency in the police killing of Keith Scott that sparked violent overnight protests, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said his department will not release body camera footage from the incident.

Putney claimed he is unable to release the footage because state law requires a court order to publish such videos. “The law is pretty specific, especially around criminal evidence for an investigation,” he said. “I cannot release that.”

But that’s not true, the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina told ThinkProgress. The controversial law prohibiting police officials from releasing such videos to the public is not yet in effect.

Or someone claiming that their kids couldn’t bring a bible or pray in school. Which doesn’t entirely pass the smell test, but if the person thinks a Muslim shouldn’t be able to do the same (bring a Koran, pray in school), then there’s a good reason no one is allowed to bring their religious books or pray - because allowing some but not others would be 1A violation by the school (establishment of religion).

Which doesn’t entirely pass the smell test, but if the person thinks a Muslim shouldn’t be able to do the same (bring a Koran, pray in school), then there’s a good reason no one is allowed to bring their religious books or pray - because allowing some but not others would be 1A violation by the school (establishment of religion).

agree 100% . its so simple in its uniformity and application

nevertheless, i fear here would be the response:
“were a christian nation founded by christian people . in fact our laws are based on the bible. “

and if that werent enough they’d add “besides, all muslims are bad”

Hillary Clinton is giving a policy speech. DJT is yelling (again) about refugees.

MSNBC is carrying the DJT speech.

Ayup.

Those who make claims about their IQ are often the ones who need to overcompensate because of open and obvious failings elsewhere. IQ doesn’t address character or judgment - only the ability to respond properly to the IQ testing.

So, it’s just like the hands and …ah, other extremities then, right? All over compensations.

What a Christian!

I know what you mean. When my Dad died a few years ago, this was the Gospel passage at his funeral. Mark 25:31-40:

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Compare and contrast to Governor Abbot’s attitude.
