A Humiliated Trump Brags About Meaningless Internet Polls to Boost His Damaged Ego

The Ron Paul of 2016
Politics • Views: 58,046

One of the laws of the Internet is that online polls — the kind that let anyone vote by clicking a “submit” button — are completely unscientific, meaningless, and easy to spam. They’re intended to be fun, and nothing more.

These types of polls usually have some very weak methods that try to prevent people from voting more than once, but anyone with the Tor browser (for one example) can easily get around these restrictions and vote as many times as they can click the buttons. People with a modicum of technical knowhow can even write a script — or use a pre-written one — to automate this process and simulate clicks by the thousands.

The more obsessive the followers, the more clicks on the buttons. It’s impossible to prevent this kind of spamming, and that’s why no serious person relies on Internet polls.

And that’s why I had a good laugh this morning when I saw Donald Trump tweet this YOOOGE list of meaningless Internet polls to boast that he “won” last night’s debate with Hillary Clinton.

“Such a great honor!”

I mean, we knew the guy was ignorant about the Internet and technology in general, but this breaks new ground in pathetic. It’s reminiscent of when Ron Paul’s followers used to spam every Internet poll on the web, then proclaim he won all the polls and therefore was sure to win the election! (We know how that prediction turned out.)

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton didn’t mess around with these dumb Internet polls; she posted a list of editorial pages from US newspapers.

No serious person relies on Internet polls to tell them anything real, and no serious political commentator believes Donald Trump “won” this debate. In fact, Hillary Clinton beat the pants off the tiny-fingered fascist, and he knows it. He’s trumpeting these Internet polls in a desperate effort to shore up his damaged ego.

And by the way, that CNN/ORC poll Trump didn’t include in his list? It was the only real scientific poll among them, and here are the results:

And another piece of very bad news for Trump out of this debate: among people who actually put money on the line to predict elections, his chances of winning took a nose dive after the debate.

I watched Monday evening’s debate in split-screen, tracking movements in political prediction markets as the two candidates went back and forth. During the 90 minutes of the debate, nearly $1 million was traded on the prediction market at BetFair.com. Bettors liked what they saw from Mrs. Clinton. The first major shift in the odds occurred within the first half-hour, and the odds of a Clinton presidency continued to rise as the debate went on. At no point did the markets move in Donald J. Trump’s favor.

When he boasted of his temperament, the audience laughed, and the market tilted further against him.

All told, Mrs. Clinton’s odds of winning the election rose from around 63 percent in the minutes before the debate started to 69 percent by the end. Likewise, Mr. Trump’s chances of winning the White House declined by five percentage points. Other prediction markets, such as PredictIt, showed an even larger move against Mr. Trump.

Wile E. Coyote vs Donald Trump

1. Wile e always has an actual plan.
2. He is more articulate. (Though he rarely speaks).
3. He accepts defeat with grace and dignity
(He never sued acme)
4. He pays his bills. (Again, note very good relationship with acme)
5. he respects women and minorities(it’s just roadrunners he can’t stand and frankly, to be honest wich you, they deserve it).
6. He was created by a lifelong dedicated leftist democrat.
7. He is admirable in his committment to achieving his dream.

The next debate is going to be the ‘campaign speech’ Trump, guaranteed. And once those 100 million viewers get a load of that asshole, it’ll truly be a wrap.

Julia Ioffe:

“…Russia’s new, well-funded and Kremlin-loyal Christian TV station boomed that “Trump calmly and surely beat Clinton.” “This has never happened in American history, for there to be complete uncertainty about who won the first round of that national American sport of presidential debates,” said a hot take published by RIA News, a state-owned wire. “Moreover, it raises the question: what is victory anyway?”

Well, as much as the Kremlin and Trump would like to muddy the waters and talk about a rigged system, eventually — say, on or around November 9 — we will know who won. And though Americans haven’t yet decided on who should lead them for the next four years, the Russian government clearly has: the ranting bull who would smash up the American china shop for them.”

As far as I care the only analysis that means anything is the FiveThirtyEight model (projects.fivethirtyeight.com) that uses all reputable state and national polls and runs 10,000 simulations each time. They give odds from their results. Trump had been creeping back into it over the last month. After big events like the conventions, debates, “bad weekends”…their simulations seem to take two days to have any statistically meaningful change. So start watching there by Thursday morning and that will tell you who “won” the debate.

re: #52 Big Steve

538 is more volatile than some of the other aggregator/analyst pollsters. Princeton Election Consortium PEC (Sam Wang) has been more consistent, but still shows Clinton likely with a significant win.

NYT and Reuters likewise show Trump losing consistently.

Only in these online polls do you see Trump ahead.

As Wang noted yesterday there’s less volatility than 538’s Silver says is occurring. Clinton has had a consistent lead, which is likely to get even larger after the polls this week come in (those that were taken on or after the debate ended).

59
nines09  Sep 27, 2016 • 11:03:19am

Of course all the Trump supporters will say he won. Right now they would call a handful of shit diamonds in the rough. The real winners are the folks who were not really tuned in as of yet, and thanks to the media ignoring the facts about Trump, didn’t really have a handle on it. They saw a bit of the real Donald last night. Blowhard. Liar. Uptight. Smirking. Losing. Unprepared and undignified. My friends who hate Hillary and support Trump only saw what the rest of his dolts did. Just what they wanted to. I feel a bit better today but am still disheartened by the blindness of some. Kremlin? Putin? Taxes? Bankruptcies? Stiffing hard working people? Graft? Ignore all that. Hillary bad.

Trump doesn’t care about facts. Trump supporters don’t care about facts or logic. Only that women and minorities are kept in their proper places. That’s what this is about. That’s why Trump says what he does - and minorities and women are exposing all the misogyny and bigotry for all to see.

Republican nominee Donald Trump turned in the worst ― and I mean worst ― debate performance in modern times. It was so bad that in a normal year, it would disqualify him from getting anywhere near the White House.

though ending with a reference to bentsen and quayle:

“I knew Jack Kennedy,” Bentsen said, “and you are no Jack Kennedy.”

The debate was over that instant.

The effect on Monday was cumulative. If words matter and the rational reigns in American politics, then this would be a heavy blow to Trump’s chances.

We’ll see if it is. In the meantime, let’s not forget that Quayle ended up being vice president.

Spent some time on the road this morning and flipped between MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN on the satellite radio. Couple of things surprised me:

1. All the commentators seem to think that Trump won early on trade. While it may have been his high point, sea level is a high point compared to Death Valley. I thought even then he came off as an ass who offered nothing.

2. Nobody has mentioned that the crowd reactions were not positive reactions for Trump. Mostly it seemed to be that the audience was laughing at him not with him.

Things that didn’t surprise me: Fox News was critical of Holt for not asking questions about the email server, and Benghazi, and the basket of deplorables.

That’s like the, probably apocryphal, story of an American officer and NVA officer meeting after the Vietnam War.

American: You know, you never beat us in the field.

NVA: That is true. It is also irrelevant.

Well as one of those “in the field” in my youth, it was relevant to my health and well-being that the NVA never beat us in the field.

Now that he’s gotten his ass whupped in the first debate, he’ll naturally assume that he wasn’t ‘tough enough’ on Hillary and adjust accordingly.

The next debate is going to be the ‘campaign speech’ Trump, guaranteed. And once those 100 million viewers get a load of that asshole, it’ll truly be a wrap.

He’s either going to slink off and not debate again or go nuclear in the next. There is no middle grown with Trump.

Big Steve, second time you posted that similar comment. I hope you realize the tax rate for top earners hasn’t been the same since the trickle down days.

You might just do a Googel search on Reagan budget guru and use terms like “David Stockman trickle down economics doesn’t work”

You’ll see all kinds of articles from when he came out in 2010 and told everyone it was dumb and we (The USA) will need to raise taxes to repair the damage done.

Here is a Daily KOS link, but in case you may think KOS is too-left leaning then follow some of the links in the article.

DailyKOS - David Stockman on Starving the Beast: “It doesn’t work. Game over.”

And a big quote from Stockman in that article…

You can keep cutting taxes until you reach the point where this year, the year just ended, we spent 3.6 trillion and we only collected 2.2. We are now so far out of kilter that it’s irrelevant. Taxes are going to have to be raised. The beast needs to be trimmed back, but it can’t be starved enough to even begin to cope with our fiscal problem. And this is where I think all the politicians are faking, in both parties but the Republicans especially. The Republicans think their mission in life is to cut taxes. Sorry, game over. We’re now in the tax raising business, and we’re going to be in the tax-raising business for the next decade.

I used bold in the quote the same as in the article.

It’s time to do what is right and what the tax structures have been in the past. That would be the glory days after WW2 that brought about the big boom years and paid off the war debt.

Backwoods_Sleuth  Sep 27, 2016 • 11:59:34am

On National Voter Registration Day, a U.S. District Court in Illinois granted a motion blocking the state’s same-day voter registration program.

The program has been offered by counties with populations greater than 100,000. Shortly after a pilot version of the program proved to be a success during the 2014 election, a bill making it a permanent feature of the state’s election law was signed by outgoing Gov. Pat Quinn (D). More than 110,000 voters registered on election day last March.

But, as ThinkProgress has previously reported, members of the Illinois Republican Party sued a couple months ago to block the program. They argue it gives unfair advantage to Democratic candidates who generally do well in high-population counties.

In a ruling issued Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Samuel Der-Teghiayan granted the Republicans’ motion for a preliminary injunction shutting down the program for now.

“The application of this legislation favors the urban citizen and dilutes the vote of the rural citizen,” Der-Teghiayan writes. “The Supreme Court has made it clear that legislation cannot ‘restrict the political participation of some in order to enhance the relative influence of others.’”

Disagree with your conclusion, if not with the gist of the statement: You’re right about the “regular” GOP and its reps (comparatively) fading into the background this election cycle - at least on the national level: but most polling I’ve seen so far depressingly gives the Democrats at beast a 50-50 chance to retake control of the Senate, and that the House (AFAICT) is still going to be firmly in Republican hands. Hands, I am sure, which will be spending at least the next two years flinging as many wrenches into the Clinton Administration’s gears as they possible can.
I think most state/local GOP officeholders are probably concentrating on their own races and hoping the stench at the top of the ticket won’t waft down. It’s probably a wise move: regardless of the Presidential results, “coattails” aren’t what they used to be;local politics aren’t likely to move much, and the Democrats are still going to be viewed as the Party Of Satan in way too much of this country.

I think his mic “problem” is he thinks it was set to pick up all the sniffles.

You know, some wiz-bang sound man probably had a very intense many channeled equalizer on his mike that only had a certain range of sounds (middle high) that over emphasized the sniffles.

Or something.

Yesterday, at one point 538 had Hillary’s chance of winning down to 51%. Today, it has bounced up a bit to 55.8%

I wonder what recent polls shifted that or is it just the constant rerunning of the same numbers?

I’m fairly surprised there wasn’t an exception for books and artwork. I’ve dealt with plenty of movie and sports memorabilia over the years as a collector and occasional seller - and I get the need for a law like this. I wouldn’t be surprised if a solid 35% (or more) of autographed items are faked. My guess is that a patch for books and artwork will be coming fairly quickly.

Oh, I think the intentions were solid and a fix is not too complicated to do, but there definitely does need to be a fix.

Meanwhile, Roger Stone admits the reason that Trump doesn’t button his jacket - it’s because the kevlar protection is too uncomfortable and constricting.

Why doesn’t he wear his jacket with the button closed?

That’s the answer. Clinton has had years of experience wearing kevlar protection as part of the first family; and even though the technology has gotten better, it’s still bulky and uncomfortable.

Legislation that enhances participation is not restricting participation.

Without reading the entire decision, I can at least see the basis for the reasoning. If you have a law that only allows certain parts of the state to benefit, then it becomes a problem. That said, the 100,000 cut off for population strikes me as fairly reasonable (unless it turns out that there are only a handful of counties that meet that criteria).

re: #165 Jay C

I wasn’t making any assumption about actual election results and change of congress etc. I was simply stating the big GOP already elected and safe in their seats politicians are not out and about and how unusual that is.

To me that is telling. Not about their’s or other’s races…just that they are not out boasting about Trump. Sometime an observation can just be a simple view of a slice in time.

Scary when NR begins to make sense…

If you’re a geopolitical rival of the United States, Trump is a delight. He’s America’s leading Putin apologist, wasting several agonizing turns in the debate defending Russia from the charge of meddling in U.S. elections and bizarrely wondering if a “400-pound” man “sitting on their bed” hacked Democratic National Committee e-mails. He said he hasn’t “given lots of thought to NATO” and then went ahead and proved the truth of that statement by fundamentally misunderstanding the alliance. He treats it as a glorified protection racket whereby NATO countries allegedly pay us to defend Europe and they’re not paying what they owe. He even doubled down on his claim — an incredibly bizarre claim given Russia’s military resurgence — that NATO “could be obsolete.” This is of course music to Vladimir Putin’s ears, but it’s deeply threatening to American national security. America isn’t in the NATO alliance out of altruism.

It’s a pilot program started in 2014. Smaller counties offered same day registration at the main county office because, the rationale went, requiring it at all polling locations might have placed too much of a financial burden on smaller county budgets.

As a female, I think her weight is her business. I also think too much pressure is placed on females at a young age to conform to society’s image of how females should look. Being healthy should be where the main emphasis is placed rather than on optics. I’ve been on the thin side my entire life, and it’s probably due to genetics and my metabolism. I tend to not look at a person’s weight but at his/her intelligence because, for me, a person’s level of intelligence and critical thinking skills are more important than anything else. Trump doesn’t appear to me to be as healthy as he and his doctor are claiming he is. At the end of last night’s debate, Trump looked to me to be exhausted mentally and physically while HRC appeared to be full of energy and as if she were ready for Debate #2 right then and there.

Of course it is her business, although her contract with the Miss Universe Pageant certainly had a variety of clauses about her physical appearance (I have no use for pageants at all). What is obscene is that she was paraded as “a fat pig” that had to improve herself for the male gaze (especially Trump’s) when there was nothing wrong with her weight in the first place.

I still don’t get if those machines are actually connected to the internet.

When a voting machine is connected to whatever via insecure WiFi, the issue of whether it has a connection to the internet diminishes in importance.

Virginia Finally Drops America’s ‘Worst Voting Machines’ Kim Zetter - Security Date of Publication: 08.17.15

Excerpt:

The Machines That Time Forgot

Although communication between the machines was encrypted, the wireless protocol they used was the notoriously insecure WEP. The FBI had demonstrated in 2005 that it could crack a 128-bit WEP key in about three minutes. But an attacker wouldn’t have needed even this much time to attack Virginia’s voting machines. By capturing and analyzing just two minutes of wireless traffic between two machines, investigators were able to crack the encryption key. The key turned out to be “abcde.”

What’s more, investigators found that even when they clicked a button to disable the wireless function in an attempt to close them off from remote attack, the device’s network card was still able to send and receive traffic. Once the encryption key was cracked, an attacker could have joined the wireless network to record voting data as it crossed the network, inject malicious data into the stream, or connect to voting machines to subvert them and an election. How so?

Investigators discovered that the machines were running on a 2002 version of Windows XP that had not been patched since 2005. A simple scan revealed that the machines were vulnerable to at least 18 known software vulnerabilities, any of which could have provided an opening for attackers to take over the machines. At least one vulnerability was a 10-year-old flaw that Microsoft had long ago fixed but had never been patched on the machines.

Time had marched on, but the technology in the WINVote machines had stayed put. “The WinVote machines were originally certified in 2003. Although this equipment has not changed, the myriad of technological advances in other areas after the original certification have resulted in machines which today, more than a decade later, are less secure than when the machines were originally certified,” investigators wrote in an early version of their report.

The machines also had an administrative account that was secured with the hardcoded password “admin”.

“Using this account and password, full administrative access to the WINVote operating system was available,” the investigators wrote in their report (.pdf).

The WinVote machines were decertified in April 2015 by Governor Terry McAuliffe, and taken out of service here and in some other states. Presumably, newer equipment is significantly more secure.

Murdoch’s News Corp’s major Australian publication, The Australian, editor-at-large blames those nasty progressives for the vileness of Pauline Hanson:

Failing to manage Pauline Hanson has dire risks

The risk now is that the ideological conflict and partisan self-interest that poisons our politics over the budget, welfare, indigenous constitutional recognition and same-sex marriage will spill into the situation of Muslims in Australia, with profound consequences.

[…]

The progressive elites are arrogant, inept and exploitative when it comes to Hanson’s return and her predictable call to end Muslim immigration. Every sign is their response — seen at the most superficial level with the Greens’ walkout on her maiden speech — will be self-interested and counter-productive. It is a mix of moral vanity fused with a determination to promote themselves by publicising Hanson’s prejudice, the worst possible combination.

[…]

This is typical Murdochian spiel, an attempt to put responsibility on others for his/their own culpability.

But the editor even does this:

Don’t think polarisation between both sides in this rigid ideological divide won’t deepen very quickly. The truth is we need to manage this. Hanson isn’t going anywhere. She will be in parliament for years. Muslim immigration to this country will continue. And the global struggle against Islamist terrorism will proceed unabated.

Note how the editor immediate super-imposes Muslim immigration with continued threat of terrorism. Then he goes on in the editorial at length about the dangers of Muslim terrorism.

To this stage both are flawed projects. The public is not so dumb it doesn’t see this. In most Western nations where Muslims congregate, an epic battle of ideas is taking place, the manifestations of which are seen daily. The test is how Western and Muslim heritages find an accommodation.

The core problem is the rise of a global extremist Islamist ideology seen in different degrees across different nations. […]

It’s pretty clear that Murdoch knows how to make money, because people around the world are the same, and manipulating people is not so hard to do, but it does take a bit of cleverness and the luck to be born in the right place at the right time.

I think it has been well past the time, for decades now, that Democrats stop apologizing for the things they say when GOPers rarely do. When they do apologize, it’s always a non-apology apology. They don’t concern themselves with how their words negatively impact others. Gov. Dean’s comment specifically targeted Trump and no one else, unlike a lot of the things Trump has said about Democrats, Latinos/Hispanics, women, and others.

I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passersby what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later, and with whom. I give them selfies and pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them the “thumbs up” and tell them I like them. And it works just like Facebook. I already have four people following me: two police officers, a private investigator, and a Psychiatrist.

FBI’s Comey: Officials Worry About ‘Terrorist Diaspora’ from Syria, Iraq

Intelligence and law enforcement agencies worry that a surge of violent extremists will eventually move from ISIS-controlled areas in Syria and Iraq into Western nations with the aim of committing terrorist attacks, FBI Director James Comey told Congress on Tuesday.

“The caliphate will be crushed,” but hundreds of people will remain and become part of a “terrorist diaspora” in the next two to five years. “When ISIS is reduced to an insurgency, those people will try to come to Western Europe and here,” Comey said in testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.

It’s pretty ridiculous to suggest that Trump is using cocaine, actually.

It’s not cocaine, it’s Angel Dust

Are we sure Trump is even going to show up for the remaining debates?
I can see him trying to weasel out of it.

I think he’ll show up for the next one, thinking he can win by being a bigger bully. The third one is more in doubt, thought.

Common side effects of cocaine abuse include:

* Irritation
* Anxiety
* Extremely talkative
* Psychosis
* Legal problems
* Erratic, bizarre behaviors
* Chronically runny nose
* Break from reality
* Unable to exert good judgment

re: #329 Jenner7

I hope the Clinton camp is giving Howard Dean a call. He’s being an asshole and taking heat off of Trump.

He is not the only one that thought that cocaine may be the case. I don’t know if you’ve ever been around the drug, but it does have that effect on many people. That is why so many mentioned it. There were many comments here last night just the same. If you were around the party crowd in the early to mid 80s that was a common trait in users, even casual use could lead to it. And it could happen for days…not just with current use.

Maybe this will help…a Google search on “donald trump cocaine sniffles.”

Google Search

Lots of people talking about it.

And Dean is a doctor, he probably knows the traits.

“Lots of people talking about it.”

But, not Trump. He’s blaming the sniffling we heard on a “defective mic.”

Is there any way to tell if Harold Borstein has a questionable prescription record?

FWIW Trump got his Tenuate Dospan from a different drug pusher.

She had the look of someone whose doctors had engineered 90 minutes of alertness for her just for the event.

And then another hour or so immediately afterwards at a post-debate rally. And then another one this morning for the rally in NC.

Trump, meanwhile - Mr. Stamina - lost the ability to speak coherently after 30 minutes, then cancelled his post-debate rally appearance to go home and rest.

To be fair, it’s pretty exhausting to be humiliated for 90 minutes.

“He should stick to composing shitty cartoons.”

I’ve seen more armchair MDs come out of the woodwork this year than I’ve ever seen before. These are the same persons who are also armchair educators, climate scientists, foreign policy experts, economists, physicists, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc. who think they know more than those who have degrees in these fields of study. They seem to think they know more about these professions but have no training or experience in them.

Well, you know, they always bring the common sense that those pointy-headed academics lack!
////

My favorite episode of this was back in 2010 when Climate Denier Anthony Watts had compiled his ‘audit’ of all the climate stations, and was going to PROVE once and for all that the whole rise in Surface Temp was because of bad station siting. So they divided them up into ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’ station sites. It turned out the Good sites had an EVEN MORE PRONOUNCED rising trend, that the ‘Bad’ stations had been slightly masking, because they had a slower rate of rise.

I think Watts said, “It doesn’t mean what you think it means”, then dropped the whole thing for the NEXT “This time for sure!” moment, when Physicist Richard Muller declared he was going to do HIS OWN analysis of the climate data, since he thought those Climate Scientists didn’t know how to analyse data. Watts declared that he’d go along with whatever Muller found.

Muller found that the Climate Scientists actually knew their shit. And Watts? He declared that Muller had been ‘gotten to’.

Newt(!) Gingrich tells @jamiegangel that Trump needs to go to next debate w/ “a few more facts, but not too many.”

Maybe even some that are, you know, FACTS.

“Muller found that the Climate Scientists actually knew their shit. And Watts? He declared that Muller had been ‘gotten to’.”

This reminds me of the way Ken Cuccinelli went after Michael Mann in 2011 when he was VA’s Atty General. The entire point of Cuccinelli’s investigation was to prove that Mann had used state tax money to produce flawed climate change studies when Mann was employed at the Univ.of VA. Cuccinelli ended up looking like the climate denialist he is because he couldn’t prove what he thought he could prove. His scheme was meant to discredit Dr. Mann. I think his little game-playing at taxpayers’ expense is partly what caused him to lose his re-election bid. I’ve never been as happy as I was when I learned he’d lost his bid for re-election and would no longer be able to use his position in government in VA to push his personal beliefs.
