Saturday Night Classical Jam: Joshua Bell & Jeremy Denk: Tiny Desk Concert

And now for some classical music that’s anything but sedate and respectable.

September 30, 2016 by TOM HUIZENGA • “You gotta love Brahms,” Joshua Bell says, a little short of breath. He’s wiping sweat from his brow after the big rock ‘n’ roll conclusion to the composer’s D minor Violin Sonata. Bell and the astute pianist Jeremy Denk play it with all the turbulence and tenderness Brahms demands, and it’s an invigorating way to open this Tiny Desk concert.

Bell and Denk have been chamber-music partners for 10 years, and they’re a bit wound up on Brahms these days. They’ve released a new album, For the Love of Brahms, and they’re performing the music, along with that of Brahms’ friend Robert Schumann, in concerts.

Contrasting with the fiery Brahms, Schumann’s Romance, Op. 94, No. 2 unfolds like a song without words. Bell makes his 1713 Stradivarius sing, capturing the bittersweet tone of the music. When the theme comes around for the second time, he lightens bow pressure for a more intimate, almost whispered disclosure.

Another of Brahms’ close friends figures prominently in Bell and Denk’s final offering. Violinist Joseph Joachim was something like the Joshua Bell of Brahms’ day, as well as the man for whom the composer wrote his Violin Concerto. Joachim’s gift to Brahms was creating piano and violin arrangements of the composer’s Hungarian Dances.

Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 1, powered by a sweeping theme and chugging piano topped with pearly descending runs, whisks you to a smoky café where gypsy fiddlers battle for supremacy. Starting off on the low G string, Bell’s tone is as rich as dark chocolate, the feeling a touch wistful.

Bell and Denk are among today’s most thoughtful and probing musicians. With playing as vibrant as this, it’s virtually impossible not to love Brahms.

For the Love of Brahms is available now:
iTunes: itunes.apple.com
Amazon: amazon.com

Set List:
Brahms: Violin Sonata No. 3, IV. Presto agitato
Schumann: Romance, Op. 94, No. 2
Brahms (arr. Joachim): Hungarian Dance No. 1

The Latest: Ryan heckled by Trump supporters at rally

[…]

Sensenbrenner said Saturday that the annual “Fall Fest” is a chance to thank Ryan for his work. That led to someone in the crowd yelling, “Not no more!”

Sensenbrenner started to say, “OK, if you’re not going to be for the whole ticket” before being interrupted again by the person shouting “I’m for Donald Trump!”

Sensenbrenner then urged the person to “stop interrupting me” before making his case to elect both Trump and others running for office this year.

[…]

So Sensenbrenner is still wanting people to vote for Drumpfskind.

Speaking of all things Blacku[fill in the blank], one of my fondest moviegoing memories was watching Blacula amongst a large and raucous audience in the old skool movie palace Fox Theatre in downtown Tucson in 1972. A groovy time was had by all, and I’m told the Fox has been lovingly restored to its former glory (in my day, it was what I imagine 42nd Street grindhouses were like in NYC at the time).

Online voter registration surges in Pennsylvania

[…]

The success of online voter registration — in a year when Pennsylvania is both a crucial battleground in a contentious presidential race and home to a hotly contested Senate campaign — appears to have benefited the Democrats. About 287,000 Democrats used the system, compared to 229,000 Republicans and 86,000 independents.

[…]

Sounds encouraging… but notice:

But the GOP saw the biggest gains heading into this election, with a voter base about 3 percent larger than it was in 2012. The number of registered Democrats fell by 3 percent. In addition, more than 146,000 voters in the state changed their registration to Republican this year, while 104,000 people switched to Democratic.

What would they do? Sit in the audience quietly? This is a town hall. If they try to disrupt the session they would be thrown out. If they do not, Mrs. Clinton would likely not notice them’.

More clueless:

U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne of Fairhope, a Republican, on Saturday morning called on Trump to give up his quest for the presidency. He challenged Trump to step aside and allow his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, to take over the top spot on the Republican ticket.

The creationists always have had a hard time with the real world.

In the real world, where ballots are already made, the person running for President under the Republican flag is not Pence.

What would they do? Sit in the audience quietly? This is a town hall. If they try to disrupt the session they would be thrown out. If they do not, Mrs. Clinton would likely not notice them’.

I suspect it is an empty threat and no one is being brought.

I can see Trump pulling a cheap stunt like that. I can see Trump making a big pronouncement and asking them to stand and force Clinton to ‘face her accusers.’

I’ve remarked throughout the campaign that certain things seemed scripted, like a reality show - the ‘Trump Tower Climber’ chief among them. It wold throw the debate into complete chaos (why I called it ‘ill-considered’), but I would put nothing past them at this point. They’re desperate.

As Wang notes:

The insta-consensus among commentators is that somehow this event is a cause of Trump’s electoral doom. I think the logic is backwards - to me, the growing obviousness of his doom created an environment for this story to blow up. The genuinely new development is the impact for downticket - in both the Senate and the House.

Only once the goose was cooked did the trimmings decide to abandon the platter.

Senator McCain Drops Support for Trump Will Vote for Write-In (goes to Stars and Stripes)

PHOENIX — Sen. John McCain joined the growing chorus on Saturday of high-profile Republicans withdrawing support for Donald Trump.

The Arizona senator said in a statement that both he and his wife, Cindy McCain, will not be voting for Trump in the wake of lewd comments he made in a 2005 videotape.

“I have never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate and we will not vote for Hillary Clinton,” McCain said. “We will write in the name of some good conservative Republican who is qualified to be President.”

Vanity Fair: DONALD TRUMP HAS TOTALLY UPENDED CONSERVATIVE MEDIA, AND IT’S BEAUTIFUL
Yes, the presidential nominee has divided America like no one else, but there is a silver lining: the implosion of Fox News and the G.O.P. tribal wars it’s brought with it.

No man, woman, or set of cloven hooves has done more to bring Americans apart than Donald J. Trump, he who would be emperor. Trump is the Great Divider, the polarizer with a power saw for a mouth. He has sliced the Republican Party asunder, his brand of bellicose, invective-spiked, minority-trashing, proudly ignorant populism more than most country-club, Chamber of Commerce Republicans can swallow at cocktail hour. His hulking usurpation has blotted out even the near past. Only four years ago Mitt Romney was the G.O.P. presidential nominee, and already he looks like an oil painting from mellow antiquity. Romney has not endorsed Trump for president, nor have primary rivals Jeb Bush (his former-president brother and noble father are other non-supporters) and John Kasich, whose campaigns followed traditional themes and metrics and were crushed like paper planes in King Kong’s paws. The Republican Party that these business suits respected, propped up, papered over, and platitudinized is no more. And it’s not coming back, even if Trump loses in a mudslide. Politically, Donald Trump isn’t “the new normal”—he’s the new abnormal, the plus-size genie that broke the bottle.

But let’s look on the bright side, since bright sides are becoming harder to find. Perhaps Trump’s greatest act of division is the tribal war he’s triggered in the conservative media. Bitter fratricide has broken out between the pro-Trump zealots and the anti-Trump stalwarts, pitting talk-radio gasbag against gasbag, pundit against pundit, blogger against blogger, online trolls against byliners. I cannot tell you how much joy this has given me. “Schadenfreude” doesn’t begin to cover it. I keep hoping that it will escalate into the local-news teams’ free-for-all rumble in Anchorman, with George F. Will spearing Bill O’Reilly with a trident—that is my dream for America. If Trump belly-flops on Election Day in bitter defeat, costing Republicans the Senate, the postmortem could provide the perfect bonfire for roasting marshmallows. Let the recriminations begin! The post-Trump conservative landscape will be a charred, feudal battlefield, the survivors fighting for the paltry remains of a party too dumb to live.

Hey there, fellow fans of the Marvel Comic Universe … especially the Netflix series. Marvel just announced who will be playing the big baddie for THE DEFENDERS series … none other than Sigourney Weaver.

That’s pretty damn impressive, imho. My interest in that series just went way, way up. Although I think it isn’t getting release for another year or so.

Politico claims “exclusive poll”:

Exclusive poll: GOP voters want the party to stand by Trump

A new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll conducted after the Republican nominee’s lewd comments went public shows a sharp partisan divide.

A wave of Republican officials abandoned Donald Trump on Saturday, but, at least for now, rank-and-file Republicans are standing by the party’s presidential candidate, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll conducted immediately after audio was unearthed Friday that had the GOP nominee crudely bragging about groping women and trying to lure a married woman into an affair.

[…]

So, all that verbiage makes it sound like there hasn’t been a negative impact on Drumpfskind.

But Politico has a way of… let’s just say, using language freely.

See the following paragraph:

But voters are largely viewing Trump’s comments through their own partisan lens: 70 percent of Democrats say Trump should end his campaign, but just 12 percent of Republicans — and 13 percent of female Republicans — agree.

Well yes, 12% or 13% is a minority, but in a national election that many Republicans wanting their candidate to bail is enough to tip the balance in the close swing states, nearly all of which Drumpfskind has to win to win the election.

In other words, if one is balanced on a knife edge, even a feather will knock one over.

Note that the Politico poll was done before all the insider Republicans started to bail. The bandwagon effect will manifest itself, and I expect that 12% who want Drumpfskind to bail will grow.

Someone else you may be surprised is still alive: Newton Minow, the FCC chair who famously called television a “vast wasteland” way back in 1961, is still with us and still practicing law at age 90. Mr. Minow was 32 when President Kennedy appointed him to the FCC. He gave his historic speech, actually entitled Television and the Public Interest, just 3 months later on May 9, 1961.

“When television is good, nothing — not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers — nothing is better.
But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your own television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland.
You will see a procession of game shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western bad men, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence, and cartoons. And endlessly commercials — many screaming, cajoling, and offending. And most of all, boredom. True, you’ll see a few things you will enjoy. But they will be very, very few. And if you think I exaggerate, I only ask you to try it.”

That he used to be close to a coin-toss win is a scandal in itself.

And all the racists and sociopaths voting for him aren’t going anywhere.

Trump represents all the fear and loathing racists and nativists have toward an increasingly pluralistic society. Obama winning office twice is but one major signal of the ascendancy of minorities in America, which most of them still cannot accept. Now, they are facing another threat to their tidy little worldview of only white Christian men running the show — a woman who will quite likely become president. A double whammy. Trump offered them probably their last hope of achieving their imaginary past, and he will fail to become president. I think even the most loyal Trumpistas know deep in their hearts that he is toast, but they need to put the blame on someone else. Otherwise, they would have to admit that their tidy little worldview is doomed, that it never existed in reality, and like it or not, white people are not always going to be “on top.” So, they will just get more angry and more desperate.

I’m really worried what these people will do after Trump loses. They are not going to take the complete and utter demolition of their world lightly.

Thankfully we went shopping the other day, so cannibalism won’t be necessary, but we’re low on snack foods so some light nibbling may occur during the debate. Finally, we managed to keep power through the worst of it, so short of Dominion having one of its famous “oopsie” moments, we should be good to go.

Ohio goes boom!

Most likely forced into it by the last two weeks The Columbus Dispatch today officially endorses Hillary Clinton for President.

To many outside the state it may not mean much, but for us Ohioans The Dispatch endorsing a Democrat is certainly a very unique thing.

Ordinarily they would endorse a dead street rat if it had an R next it’s name.

But they must have had to gag this one down…

The Columbus Dispatch - Presidential Endorsement 2016

Editorial: For president | Trump unfit, Clinton is qualified
Sunday October 9, 2016 5:15 AM

Like millions of Americans, The Dispatch editorial board has asked this question more than once: How, in a nation of more than 300 million people, did we end up with two such disliked and distrusted presidential candidates?

At the same time, we worry that this dismaying choice will cause some voters to throw up their hands and pass on this election. We urge voters to do their homework, cut through the half-truths and lies, and go to the polls with facts.

For us, the choice between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump is not pleasant, but it isn’t difficult. Republican candidate Donald Trump is unfit to be president of the United States. Democrat Hillary Clinton, despite her flaws, is well-equipped for the job.

The Dispatch traditionally has endorsed Republican presidential candidates, but Trump does not espouse or support traditional Republican values, such as fiscal prudence, limited government and free trade, not to mention civility and decency. We are disappointed that so many Republican leaders have accommodated a narcissistic, morally bankrupt candidate who is so clearly out of step with those values.

While third parties offer a tempting way out of the dilemma, votes cast for the Libertarian or Green Party tickets could have the effect of helping Trump win the White House.

Clinton has spent a career spanning decades in politics as First Lady, U.S. senator and U.S. secretary of state, and has a long record of service to families, women and children.

The art of compromise, which once was respected by Republicans and Democrats in Congress, and which allowed for progress rather than gridlock, is one that Clinton understands and practices. She demonstrated that not only in the Senate, but as the nation’s chief diplomat.

She is well-known to foreign leaders and understands that world order depends upon a U.S. foreign policy that is committed to its international obligations. The United States is the most stabilizing force in a world prone to chaos, and she knows that role is not something to be trifled with on a whim, as Trump’s reckless pronouncements would do.

Yes, Clinton has faced controversy: These include allegations of corruption; convenient memory lapses, particularly while being questioned during investigations; lies such as the one about coming under sniper fire in Bosnia; and difficulty in admitting when she is wrong. Her use of a private email server that exposed secret State Department communications to interception was reckless, and her attempts to minimize and cover up the scandal damaged her further.

Preferring Clinton to Trump does not mean the Dispatch embraces all elements of her platform. Her calls for higher taxes, unsustainable spending and the likelihood that she will try to stack the U.S. Supreme Court with a left-leaning majority are unwelcome.

But her negatives pale when measured against the dangers posed by Trump.

What stunt? Bill Clinton’s philandering is well known and stale. Mrs. Clinton was not responsible for her husband’s dalliances/misconduct. Most Americans get that. This is not a winning strategy for Trump, who is on record for being a bigot and sexist.

“if you have a problem with my husband hes sitting over there - go talk to him. and he’s not running for president. he’s already been president. now can we talk about the problems facing most americans and our plans for the future?”

re: #232 Dr Lizardo

I don’t doubt that a tiny fraction of the “Second Amendment solutions” crowd may well try some shit in the wake of their defeat. They are, after all, angry and increasingly desperate as they see their worldview crumble to dust before their very eyes.

I also don’t doubt they will be dealt with quite harshly if they do actually do something, and I’m old enough to remember how in the wake of the OKC bombing, the RWNJ’s suddenly went very, very quiet. All hat, no cattle - with the exception of a tiny handful.

They cynical side of my nature tells me that Alex Jones, FNC, Rush, etc., are probably looking forward to at least four years of a President Hillary Clinton. It’ll keep them on the air, peddling their incessant and ridiculous conspiracy theories and raking in the moolah. For them, a Clinton Administration is money in the bank, a guaranteed paycheck.

I’m strongly suspecting that a Clinton victory next month is going to cause a whole lot of shit to come down on the heads of the wingnut media. Jones looked like he was ready to bite through a steel plate over his anger towards Assange Monday night, when he thought that his buddy was going to finally give out the bombshell that destroyed Hillary. Between the leadership shakeup and the infighting over Trump support, Faux is set to lose even more viewership. And Rush’s program is presently kept afloat through a great deal of wingnut welfare, such that he didn’t even mention his salary after he resigned a couple months ago.

So, tl;dr, the Obama years have brought the wingnuts to a point where they’re facing existential crises and 4-8 of Clinton may be the proverbial last straw.

Dreher laments: There Is No More Religious Right

[…]

I don’t know what kind of shape the GOP is going to be in after November, and I don’t think anybody can say. But the future of the Religious Right is a lot more clear. There will still be religious conservatives in America, even among Millennials and Xers. But they will be done with the Old Guard.

When the smoke clears after November, the Benedict Option will be all we will have left.

But typical of religious right commenters:

I assume the commenter is referring to this Jehu (from wikipedia):

Jehu (/ˈdʒiːhjuː/; Hebrew: יֵהוּא, Modern Yehu, Tiberian Yēhû, meaning “Yahu is He”; Akkadian: Ia-ú-a; Latin: Iehu) was the tenth king of the northern Kingdom of Israel (Samaria) since Jeroboam I, noted for exterminating the house of Ahab at the instruction of Jehovah.[1] He was the son of Jehoshaphat,[2] and grandson of Nimshi.

And not this Jehu (also Wikipedia):

Jehu (UK /ˈdʒiːhjuː/ or US /ˈdʒiːhuː/,[1] Hebrew: יהוא, Yehu “The Lord is He”[2]) son of Hanani was a prophet in the Hebrew Bible, who was active in the 9th century BC.

According to the Bible, Jehu condemned the house of Baasha, king of Israel, accusing him of leading the people into sin like his predecessor Jeroboam. Jehu’s words were fulfilled in the reign of Elah, Baasha’s son, when the traitor Zimri assassinated Elah and murdered all of Baasha’s family and associates. (1 Kings 16:1,7,12)

It does have to do with Clinton insofar JB accused her of intimidation.
To be sure, unlike her rape claim, her intimidation claim doesn’t have a leg to stand on (it was merely an impression that she got, as follows from her own narrative). But see if this little nuance stops Trump from using this.

Exactly.

buzzfeed.com

Federal prosecutor Ken Starr’s investigation team reached out to Broaddrick to ask whether Clinton had forced her to file a false affidavit. Broaddrick was afraid of lying to a federal grand jury, she says. After Starr gave her immunity from prosecution for perjury, she decided it was time to tell the full truth.

Despite Broaddrick’s denial in her affidavit, Jones’ lawyers included Yoakum’s letter and Broaddrick’s name in a 1998 filing.[11] The letter suggested that the Clintons had bought Broaddrick’s silence, describing a phone call where Broaddrick’s husband asked Yoakum to say the incident never happened and said that he intended to ask Clinton “for a couple of big favors.”[13] This, along with the discrepancy between the letter and Broaddrick’s affidavit, attracted the attention of independent counsel Kenneth Starr, who was investigating Clinton for obstruction of justice. After being approached by the FBI, Broaddrick consulted her son, a lawyer, who told her she could not lie to federal investigators.[6] After they promised her she would not be prosecuted for perjury regarding her affidavit in the Jones case, Broaddrick recanted the affidavit. However, she insisted that Clinton had not pressured or bribed her in any way, and so Starr concluded that the story was not relevant to his investigation and his report only mentioned the recanting in a footnote.[1]

As usual, facts are more complicated than simplistic partisanship. But who would want to deal with nuance nowadays? It’s showtime.

Dry facts:

1. JB’s testimony has been neither discredited, nor confirmed.

2. Her denying affidavit was officially rescinded because she was afraid to lie to the federal authorities and there is a credible explanation for its existence (quote: “you can’t get to him, and I’m not going to ruin my good name to do it”) so it has a very low evidentiary weight.

3. Like many rape testimonies, it’s more or less “he said, she said” (even with the friends whom she told about the alleged crime). So we don’t know what actually happened and may never know.

4. JB’s claims of intimidation by HRC are based on mere impressions (acc. to her own account) and so have no evidentiary value.

I think rational people will have to live with uncertainty, with the fact that some things are unknowable and with a possibility that Bill Clinton is a rapist.

Partisans are welcome to create their own neat reality in which all these accusations are absolutely false or absolutely true.

I know the chances are slim, but I would just love to see the Browns pull off a win against Tom Brady and the Patriots. One thing about Ohio teams…count them out and you piss ‘em off. They play better that way. And all of America has them counted out and making jokes about the poor Browns having to be the team that face the return Brady.

I am actually pretty impressed with Chuck Todd’s follow up questions. When Rudy tried to deflect to Hillary being a different person in her private wall street speeches, Todd responds that he appeared to be saying Clinton’s private speeches reflect on the real her, so don’t Trump’s private statements reflect the real him (or something like this) which left Rudy speechless for a second.

The woman who rejected Donald Trump’s sexual advances — referred to as “Nancy” in an obscenity-laced video obtained by The Washington Post — has been identified as Nancy O’Dell, a television personality whom he reportedly tried subsequently to have fired as host of the Miss USA pageant.

In the 2005 video clip, the Republican presidential nominee recalled his failed attempts to seduce a married woman. “I moved on her, and I failed. I’ll admit it,” he said.

On Friday night, “Access Hollywood” reported that the woman who rebuffed Trump’s advances was that show’s former host, O’Dell. Trump’s crass remarks were made to O’Dell’s then co-anchor, Billy Bush, as the two men arrived for a cameo appearance by Trump on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.”

Two years later, Trump tried to have O’Dell fired as host of the Miss USA pageant, reportedly because she was pregnant, although the video suggests he may have had other motives, as well.

I think rational people will have to live with uncertainty, with the fact that some things are unknowable and with a possibility that Bill Clinton is a rapist.

Partisans are welcome to create their own neat reality in which all these accusations are absolutely false or absolutely true.

I’m very uncertain. It’s quite possible he did rape/force/affair with one or two of the women and the others played along the vast right wing conspiracy. Once can reject and call out both Trump and Clinton’s behaviors. But in the end, Bill’s voting record on women’s issues is solid and after his time in office, no more hanky panky has come out. If he was a horrible philanderer or rapist, at the very least it might have stopped some time ago.

But he’s not running for office, Hillary and Trump are. And that’s really what it comes down to. the choice and implication is way beyond ‘vote for the current misogynist or for the woman who’s husband (used to be?) one.’

Yeah a lot of people have forgotten that. Exit actually did lead. It just seemed like stay would win out since it was ahead early on after the polls started being counted. Anyhow, my personal thought has always been that Trump offended so many people that he would have unable to overcome it. I believe that especially now. There’s no way Trump will do better with Hispanics and women than Romney. The worry was whether Clinton could get out the Dem base the way Obama had. I think she will. And I’ll point out that in 2004 even when Kerry lost, he still lost only by one state. The GOP has so little room for error electorally speaking.

Oh so their ad is basically those stupid memes that VB finds. Trump isn’t even really pro gun. He knows that kissing the NRA’s fat ass is a way to gain support from the rubes though. Anyone actually pro 2A should be bothered by Trump’s views on stop and frisk but shocker the NRA and gun lobby isn’t because they’re not actually pro 2A, they’re pro firearms industry making an assload of money.

In the wake of the Obergefell decision, Rob Dreher of the American Conservative and others are discussing what they call the “Benedict Option.” To be perfectly honest, I’m still trying to figure out what Dreher means by the term. For the record, I said some shit like Trump when I was younger. Like 15-16. We talked and boasted about it but most of us never really did anything. But I grew up with two very smart sisters and luckily didn’t hang out with a lot of DBag buddies, and I grew out of that shit over 30 years ago.

Then for maybe 10 years, I would hear that talk and just not play along, or laugh like ‘ha ha’ not not stand out, though I was uncomfortable.

Now men are being braver and it’s becoming bad even internally between men, which is where the problem lies.

It takes time to unlearn bad behavior. Men, women, and culture can change. Trump is taking a leap backward. Which speaks to his support: Make American Great Again, when ‘men could be men’ which mean horrible little shits to women with no recourse.

That one is going to be like a Virginia election. It’s going to be real close. Really hoping Murphy can pull it out. Rubio clearly was bored by the Senate and only saw it as an instrument for his presidential aspirations and his record in the Senate illustrates that.

Like in so many aspects of the modern world, Dreher can’t harmonize the love of Drumpfskind with what a “Christian” leader is supposed to be… and thus has no answer to the majority of the religious right marks who have fallen under the Drumpfskind spell.

The “Benedict” option is just the old fortress-Church mentality - withdraw into ecclesiastical conclave and forget about the outside world.

Trump’s apologists try to blur the line between sexist talk (which does happen more than it should and which is not excusable) with the sexual assault talk, which, I would dare say, is an exception.

They also make this sound it was like a one-off thing that, in the words of Trumps pseudo-apology. does not reflect who he is.

Bullshit. This is exactly who he is and what he would talk like in the White House.

Trump reportedly not even willing to fake contrition.

“It is a complete sh-t-show,” said one GOP operative who still backs Trump on Saturday - a day of mass defections by Republican women and down-ballot Senate and House candidates. “There’s one chance, one opportunity left - and that’s to get on bended knee and project the image of contrition… That’s not going to happen.”

Ambition is a good thing but Rubio is terrible at doing his damn job. There was a story in the Post that came out that be begged Jeb when Jeb was governor to put him on the state’s 911 investigation and then he proceeded to have the lowest attendance rate of anyone involved.

The whole George Wallace thing really has its parallels to today, and in some ways I see Drumpfskind as being the last hurrah of the Wallace-wing of American politics.

With the rise of the likes of the Kennedys and other non-Southern actors as dominant forces in the Democratic party, the Wallace faction had to move elsewhere. Though Wallace ran as a Democrat in 1964 and 1972, it was clear the transforming Democratic party was not going to harbor the old Confederate ways much longer.

Though the 1968 Democratic convention was dominated by the Vietnam war, the background also churned with this transformation of the Democratic party.

This year we have not had anything as traumatic as the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. Nor the Vietnam war. 1968 was quite the tumultuous year.

Drumpfskind and all his antics still do not rise to that level, in my view.

No, it’s actually dumber than that, and that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Originally, Murdoch was Chief Officer, Lightholler was 1st, and a man named David Blair was 2nd.

However, they brought on Wilde at the last minute to provide “experience” from the Olympic, which bumped Murdoch and Lightholler down one rank, and Blair off completely, but they did not get his key to his locker. Which contained the binoculars. Which were locked in there the entire voyage.

There is some much more too.

You also had the assassination of MLK that year. I actually did a powerpoint project on the ‘68 election for a class once. The key thing was seeing how metro areas that had once been fertile ground for JFK and LBJ in ‘60 and ‘64 ended up being much closer or going Nixon’s way entirely in ‘68. And of course in ‘72 nearly all those areas overwhelmingly went for Nixon. The 1960-72 may be the most interesting four election cycle I’ve ever studied. Two close races flanked by two massive landslides of each other party. I doubt we’ll ever see anything like that anytime soon.

I should note why I put experience in question marks.

The Olympic, even though it had it’s first voyage 10 months earlier, had only been sailing for about 6-7 months.

In September, while the Olympic was sailing through the Solent, a British Cruiser was caught by surprise by the Olympic turning while sailing up parallel to the Olympic, while going in the opposite direction. The Olympic was gored, though the Olympic nearly capsized the cruiser. It took 2 months to repair.

Then, in February, a navigation error by crew on the ship, including Captain Smith, Wilde, and Murdoch, resulted in the ship clipping a submerged object and losing a propeller blade. That took another 2 weeks of repairs. That doesn’t count another near-grounding that nearly happened in Ireland.

Why did you nominate him in the first place when you knew clearly what a horrible and deplorable person he is?

re: #497 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

It could have given them a little more warning, which considering that they only barely grazed the iceberg, would have been enough. What would have been more useful was knowledge of the ships capabilities.

For example, going Full Astern only caused the side propellers to go in reverse. The Center propeller simply stopped. This hampered the turning ability of the Propeller. If they had gone forward, the propeller would have been more effective. Not only, but they could also have the 2 side propellers operate independently, such as having one propeller go forward, and the other stopped or in reverse. They used this to aid in docking in Belfast after trials, but never tried to use it to attempt to speed up the turning from the iceburg.

re: #511 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

The Californian was not as close as claimed either though. For one, the fireworks were completely inaudible, and they should have been heard from a distance to 10 miles. Not only that, but they never saw the flares from the lifeboats, which the Carpathia saw out to a distance of more than 10 miles.

I do believe there was a mystery ship in the area.

Exactly. What these Republicans need to have pointed out to them is that the evidence has always been there with how Trump views and treats women. They ignored it. They nominated him and many of them pledged to vote for him. Tough shit.

re: #526 Targetpractice

My prediction now: After this election, the GOP will insist that NBC held off on releasing the tape so as to get Trump nominated because the knew he had the worst chance of defeating Hillary.

Not just the GOP. The overall narrative of this election - going back to 2013 after she left the State Department - has been about who could beat Hillary. First it was Jeb!, then it was Romney (but Trump got in and Romney wanted no part of it). Kasich, Rubio, Cruz, Fiorina, Huckabee, Santorum…it was always about who could beat Hillary - and the bottom line is any one of them would be doing better than Trump is right now because IT’S ALL FUCKING ABOUT BEATING HILLARY..

This saddens me because, while I’m not exactly her biggest fan, I would prefer her election be treated as the historic victory it should be and not as some kind of default outcome of an opposition party in ruins.

There was a traveling museum exhibit focused around 1968. It went month by month and looked at changes in technology, society, race realtions, politics, military (Vietnam), and also some international.

I saw it at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia a few years back.

There are all sorts of tweets and FB posts, and posts here and elsewhere, deliciously imagining what HRC will do to diss Trump. Will she refuse to shake his hand? Will she offer him a TicTac? Give him a death-glare as she meets him?

I think she’ll do absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. She doesn’t need to. The fact that everyone is tweeting all these scenarios cannot be lost on Trump and his team. They’re probably trying to prep him for every eventuality, but he’s distracted by the implosion of his campaign, and he’s not really very smart anyway. I’m betting his brain is already full. I could see him heading out onstage with a thousand different things whirling through his head, and NOT ONE would be that she simply shakes his hand, says hello, and wishes him good luck.

She does that, and he’ll wonder what fresh hell is coming, because surely it will be bad.

Trump’s telegraphing that he’ll go after Bill’s philandering, attacking Hillary as ‘enabler’, but he’s REALLY absolutely apoplectic about the GOP defections. Hard to know what he’ll do. Josh Marshall suggests there’s a pretty good chance he simply chokes. But he might also just completely go off.

What I can’t see him doing is anything that will help him.

I mean, look at the people he has as advisors - Bannon, who knows only how to appeal to the hatefilled base. Giuliani, who everyone forgets was the odds-on favorite to win the nomination in 2008, but imploded shortly after announcing. Christie, who never gained traction in the debates. The rest are an assortment of other losers, chosen more for their sycophancy than anything else.

And the format - a town hall, where voters will be asking questions, and where the ability to project empathy and respond to THEM will be crucial, and time spent attacking your opponent and NOT answering the question will be not just time wasted, but actually a big negative.

My husband is so offended that Trump is claiming the mantle of All Men Do it that he (hubby) is absolutely spitting fire. Hubs says that most men will be as turned off by this as much as most women.

I hope that is true.

I’m still kinda devastated at the thought that they might not be.

It is true. Trump’s attitude towards women is absolutely disgusting and worthy of nothing but the strongest condemnation. It shows, most importantly, that he considers women (and everyone else) to be disposable objects, to be used for his amusement or gain and when his interest in them fades, it’s on to the next one.

The hallmark of a psychopath.

re: #610 Weaselone

And yet, several news networks seem to have either treated it real or allowed Trump surrogates to push it’s contents without pushback.

They are being idiots and/or GOP tools. Just two of the most obvious points here:

1) Blankfein would not have referred to “domestic chaos” in the 2016 US election.

2) If Clinton had mocked any of the possible GOP candidates, the target for the mockery would definitely not have been Scott Walker.

I too was raised with a sense of respect for women and would never think of forcing myself on someone who was not receptive or responsive to my advances.

There are some jerks out there, but I believe they are a minority. They are a more or less nonexistent group in my circles. Which has its disadvantages. When I ask Mr. C., my brother, or assorted male friends if they can explain this sort of misogyny, all I get is a blank look and maybe a shrug if I’m lucky.
Mr. C. will occasionally add that he likes women. Which is good-and leads to the question: who marries a guy who basically dislikes women?

everyone knows what “December” sees in “May”
what May sees is christmas

Somebody needs to start a hashtag, with photos, for who we think Melania’s second husband should be.

oh, that’s not even the most obvious point.

Blankfein opens by saying they need to make sure there’s no recording devices, and then allows a transcript? Hah!
