Trump Threatens to Sue NY Times, Times Responds: Come at Us, Bro

Media • Views: 54,138

Donald Trump’s lawyer sent the following letter to the New York Times yesterday, threatening to sue them for libel over their article reporting on Trump’s alleged sexual abuse of two women.

Today the New York Times replied to this threat with a beautifully scathing letter that boils down to, “Go ahead and try.”

Heh, Mr. McGraw’s reply to Trump’s attorney is indeed a thing of beauty.

As Mark Twain once said, “Never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel.”

Same thing donald said to justify that huge deduction to avoid paying taxes for the next 20 years.

lawhawk  Oct 13, 2016 • 11:46:00am

NYT responds in kind. We’ve got the law on our side, and we know how to use it.

Oh, and I love the final sentence. We welcome the opportunity to have a court set Trump straight. Trump gets that. A lot. A lot.

The NYT gets this kind of pushback from time to time from the focus of some of its reporting. They know how this goes. Someone threatens action. NYT responds - you’re a public figure, we’re reporting what was stated, and in your case, what these women are stating confirms what you said in prior statements, so it’s not only newsworthy, but essentially confirms what we’ve reported.

Trump’s a public figure. There’s a super high bar for him to jump in order to prove his claims. He’s claiming they’re bogus.

He also claims that he’s going to release info at the appropriate time that will disprove. All of that is a smokescreen for fact that he’s got nothing. With less than a month to go, he doesn’t have time to wait. There’s no info, but his lawyers can’t say that. They have nothing, but they’re hoping to bluster the NYT into a retraction.

Moreover, this goes to Trump’s statements earlier this year about changing the defamation laws in the US. He wants to be able to silence dissent - particularly those who criticize him.

Those are the words/deeds of an authoritarian (who also happens to be a fascist).

Yes. It was intentional. The NYT’s lawyers are probably among the best, because the NYT can afford the best.

They don’t make multiple *accidental* references to Trump’s own words. Those were intentional…because they are baiting Trump (whether its just for fun, or whether they want him to walk into something is another story).

As a lawyer, there are cases every once in a while, where you get to write stuff that just makes you giddy.

I always find it funny when I get a demand letter like the one Trump’s attorney sent that includes no reference to statutory or case law. That’s usually a tell. Though as I said last night, my response would have been to just send copies of New York Times v US and Sullivan v New York Times… and for that matter, any other Supreme Court case that the Times has won over the years.

there are so many start contrasts in this campaign i still sometimes am in some kind of awe that it is happening

- i watched some of her speech. compare that only to his speech today
- clinton has that page on her website - what was i and donald doing in any particular year - a life of public service vs his
- obviously experienced and qualified senator and sos, (let alone first lady and all that) vs knowledge maybe only slightly higher that Mr. “A lepo”
- the first woman winning a major party nom, etc…(and not just any “woman”) vs a pig of a man wrt to women, wearing, flaunting and deploying his pig status as some kind of qualifying asset
- thats before the investigations by the horsemen: fahrenthold, eichenwald, olbermann, etc

and we havent even got to policy yet

biden, obama, m. obama, warren, sanders etc have all done a remarkable job keeping this discourse elevated. especially m. obama

i think the enduring ine will be “when they go low we go high”

I’m not sure if this is real irony or Alanis Morrissette irony, but Trump is now basically coming out in favor of brain damage:

“The woman was out cold, and now she’s coming back,” Trump told the crowd. “See? We don’t go by these new and very much softer NFL rules. Concussion, oh! Oh! Got a little ding on the head, no, no, you can’t play for the rest of the season. Our people are tough!”

The “Our people are tough!” bit is also a pretty standard fascist move, isn’t it? Part of the idea of restoring someone who believes they’ve been improperly displaced from power.

Trump’s Scottish golf resorts report 2015 losses

A pair of luxe Scottish golf resorts operated by Donald Trump suffered millions of dollars in losses during 2015, according to recent filings with a U.K. government agency, adding another complication to Trump’s pitch for the White House, in which he has frequently emphasized his business acumen.

Golf Recreation Scotland Limited, which operates the Trump Turnberry luxury resort in Ayrshire, reported a loss of about 8.4 million British pounds (about $12.4 million at the time) in 2015, according to a filing with Companies House, an agency that collects information from companies and makes it available to the public.

They’ll make it an app and charge $9.99 a month. Which, all joking aside, seems to be the way a lot of things are going - HBO and Showtime now have apps independent of cable that run in the $14.99 and $10.99 respectively; WWE has their app/network that runs $9.99 a month; CBS offers something similar; and then there’s Hulu and Netflix.

Schilling argued to Regan today, “How many times have you looked at a young man and said ‘Wow, he’s a beautiful young man’ or ‘Wow he’s a gorgeous young man’?”

Regan said, “Zero.” Schilling called that a “lie” because, he insisted, “there’s no way you haven’t seen somebody else’s son and said ‘Wow, he’s beautiful.’”

I do kind of wonder what they’ll have Bill do during a Hillary Clinton administration. It will be strange not only because we’ve never had a First Gentleman before, but also because he has the qualifications for a lot of political appointments.

I could see something like appointing Bill as UN Ambassador and having Chelsea serve in the more traditional First Lady role.

Hillary said in a speech she would put Bill in charge of the economy, whatever that means.

Gina goes on to tell us how mature and wise her daughter is “pure.”

“Lyda is committed to waiting until she is married to have sex,” writes Dr. Gina. “She is so committed to virginity that she gave her little sister a purity ring for her birthday, and I sat in awe as I listened to the wisdom of this big sister speak.”

According to Lyda’s website, she runs organizations geared toward millenials (although it’s not clear what those organizations actually do), so her father asked an appropriate question: “Why can’t she find a nice millennial boy?”

But Gina explains that was just a ridiculous notion: “He almost laughed at himself for asking the question. While there are certainly exceptions, career-minded, committed patriots who are equally yoked with Lyda Loudon are rare.”

The jokes make themselves.

Trump has absolutely no impulse control.

Trump absolutely cannot let any slight go unpunished.

He always hits back and will always try to do more damage than he perceived he took from the accuser or critic.

That is why I think there is a possibility he will go directly at the women who came forward. It fits the pattern that he had with bankrupting contractors who would try and take him to court by prolonging court actions until they could no longer afford the lawyers. Even if it cost him more money in legal fees then what he stiffed the contractor…he has to establish dominance and punish his enemies.

Whether it’s because they think Trump will be a figurehead and Pence the real power behind the throne, or they think Trump will be impeached and Pence elevated to the presidency, either way they see a true-believer will be in the White House and that’s good enough for them.

I remember Joe Biden relating a story that sort of showed why I couldn’t do politics. He recalled getting furious at Jesse Helms over some issue and then Majority Leader Mike Mansfield took a young Joe Biden aside and told him that Jesse Helms had adoptive a disabled boy. I mean I get the lesson that Senator Mansfield was trying to teach Joe and it obviously made an impression on Joe but that’s why I couldn’t do politics. I don’t see everyone who disagrees with me politically as an enemy but people like Jesse Helms and the being discussed Curt Schiling test me.

You know for all their tough guy talk, these guys are a bunch of pansies. See how they cried like babies when Hillary called them deplorable.

I am guy in his 40s, pretty standard issue pinkish skin, and I cried watching Michelle Obama’s speech. Guess I don’t qualify for whatever the Trumpzis version of a tough guy card might be - which suits me fine. I’d rather be on the side of decent people.

We Boston sports fans compartmentalize like you wouldn’t believe. Tom Brady, his coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots owner, Robert Kraft, are all Trump supporters.

On the other hand, after the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2011, their goalie Tim Thomas revealed himself to be a real wingnut when he would not meet with the President in what was a mandatory team meeting, customary for sports champions.

He was traded not long afterwards.

Huh Kraft’s a Trump supporter. That one honestly surprises me. Interestingly, my two favorite sportsball teams in baseball and football are both run by liberals though the Orioles did have Luke Scott who was a birther who was very obnoxious about it.

Spent last year in the Mexican league and Toronto minor league system according to baseball reference. Honestly, it was too bad. I had fun cheering for him and he honestly apart from the birther crap didn’t seem like a bad guy but man it was obnoxious shit and he knew it. I remember going to one game and having seats by the left field line and the fans had a lot of fun with him. The Angelos family as you know are pretty staunchly liberal. Lou wrote some very sympathetic stuff towards the protesters during the unrest following Freddie Gray’s death.

Ironically enough the reason why the Metro doesn’t go to Georgestown is because the rich white folks there didn’t want poor black people going in. What makes WMATA complicated compared to other public transit systems is you have three governments that are part of it- Virginia’s, Maryland’s, and the District’s.

It’s a problem we’re seeing with mass transit in NJ too - Christie’s essentially eliminated state aid for NJ Transit, which means fare hikes and capital budget are covering operating costs (barely). Service quality has dropped, and the number of disruptions is growing significantly, especially after Sandy damage. I’m expecting more fare hikes and service cuts to come - and the cuts will hit inner city and minority communities hardest. They’re the ones who rely heaviest on mass transit and the least on cars.

NYC isn’t far behind. The MTA can’t keep up with demand, so something’s gotta give.

And even leaving all the holy-holy stuff out of it, it’s just a desperate political position for the “Religious Right”. They have tied themselves to the Republican Party (and vice versa): said Party has gone on to nominate a deplorable character like Donald Trump, and they have few options. They will, of course, swallow any pretext they might have made of having any sort of standards, and jump on the Trump Train: especially when the alternative is a Presidency and Administration in control of those they (sadly literally, in many cases) view as the Tools Of Satan.
Which they will get anyway.

It just sucks because as you say these cuts do hit the inner city the hardest and they’re the most reliant on public transit. The people in the DC burbs may often choose not to have cars but it’s more out of choice than checkbook.

Regarding all these religious people still clinging to Drumpfskind, I conclude this is all boils down to the death-of-God problem, with which Europe has had to tackle post WWI and post WWII.

Basically, Drumpfskind is a surrogate for “guns and Bible”, to which they cling.

Quite the surrogate… but there it is.

I tend to think that many of the religious people still supporting Trump are the types that truly believe that Christianity is under assault in the US. They’ve been hearing that for 20-30 years, and they’ve come to believe it. So, when Trump stands up and says “we’re going to defend Christian Americans. Christian Americans,” they see someone who is going to defend them from the assault their leaders/entertainers have been telling them is happening.

It ties into a lot of the other reactionary politics we’ve seen at the heart of Trump’s campaign. The country is less Christian than it used to be, it’s less white than it used to be, we don’t have manufacturing jobs like we used to.

Kraft has had Limbaugh In his private box a few times. Belichick is smart but I sense not political. He probably met Trump and is voting on that basis. So is Brady—he said so!

It would be outright comical for Belichick to do an endorsement, in the way he does his press conferences. Absolutely a blast. We haven’t had any truly happy moments in this whole election season.

I think it’s more a problem of the death of the dominant white male than the death of God. Christianity is being used as a way of making the real issues look respectable under the cloak of religious liberty, but when you look at the rhetoric being used, it’s pretty clear that religion doesn’t really interest Trump and his supporters. It’s all toxic, raging masculinity and racism. The religious right really got going by trying to create segregated schools using religion as a means of dividing students without overt reference to race - and the same white racism has been at the core of their movement ever since.

Kraft surprised me since I thought I had read he had supported Democratic causes/candidates before and even said the team would be fine with an openly gay player. Surprised Rush has been in the owner’s box, he’s a Steelers fan like I am- hate sharing that with him but Obama’s something of a casual Steelers fan and my family was in Pittsburgh long before that blowhard so I don’t feel guilty plus Rooney was Obama’s ambassador to Ireland and Tomlin and his wife had a fundraiser for Hillary at their house.
