RUN! HE’S OFF THE LEASH!

Perhaps Trump really will have to show up to the third debate wearing a Hannibal Lecter mask.

This is another situation where Trump is working hard to please the people he’s already swayed, but just doesn’t signify with other people. This is kabuki that means something to a specific band of wingnut who gets smug about teleprompters…one of the dumber outrages within the Monster Manual of stupid outrages used to ding Obama. They’ll be caught up in the theatrical contempt of the gesture.

To everybody else, this is just silly. It’s close to being a physical, material straw man fallacy for Trump to dismantle.

Ever see pix of Ron Jeremy? He probably backs the anti-fur movement from a personal perspective…..

I think Republican Party officialdom is probably contemplating a plan of action which will be able to take early advantage of President Obama’s latest initiative on international trade relations. Something along the lines of:

1. Lease old, small tanker in the Caribbean.
2. Have tanks cleaned VERY thoroughly.
3. Sail to Cuba, fill tanks with Cuban rum.
4. Sail to Washington (or any convenient port), offload rum to selected GOP distributors.
5. Distribute product as needed.

That ship will be sailing back to Cuba riding VERY high….

Recent polling in Utah actually has Hillary less then ten points behind Trump. Mitt Romney, a Mormon, won Utah by 48 points in ‘12, and it hasn’t gone Democrat sonce LBJ’s landslide in ‘64. Part of it is because of Evan McMullen, but part of it is also because Trump is so damn awful. Hillary probably could win Utah if she devoted resources there…and I think she should. The bigger the win, the longer her coattails, and the more Trumpism, as well as it’s parent, movement conservatism, will be crushed.

Continuing on the theme of alcohol raised upthread, I disappeared about a third of a bottle of bourbon on Wednesday night after a dumpster fire of a Production deployment. I drove home after deploying, and as soon as I walked in I had 6 emails, a missed call, and a voicemail. I had to drive back into the office at 4:00 in the afternoon, against traffic. I got in, got set up, tested the system, and everything was working. Five minutes later, my client messages me: “Everything’s working now.”

Face. Desk.

I got home that night and brought in some wine for Mrs. Fish, the bourbon for me, and immediately got to it. I don’t remember much after that.

possibly o/t and i’m just guessing - maybe why none of these women came forward until now

individually they all seem like sort of low level type of assault (no disrespect)

an individual woman, no real “proof”, vs a powerful man
what’s the upside?

now they each have learned they arent the only one - safety, and strength in numbers?

and there seems to be a definite pattern

I’m noticing that one FB friend who is pro-Trump are becoming more and more virulently anti-Hillary as the days go on. She just keeps posting rants about how horrible Hillary is and how thoroughly dishonest and how — and this is an actual quote, BTW — “She is an EXPERT at getting you and millions of other sycophantic zealots to parrot her sociopathic bullshit. Trump’s ego would never give him the patience or wherewithal to learn this kind of skill.”

I’ve taken to hiding pretty much everything she links to or posts. The only reason she’s still a friend is because aside from her total stupidity about politics, I genuinely like her.

I hate this election so much. I’m ready for Hillary to beat Trump like a rented mule.

re: #79 thedopefishlives

I’ve been experimenting with different cheaper bourbons and scotches, trying to find something that balances tasting good and not breaking the bank. Bulleitt is definitely good-tasting, and the price isn’t outrageous. I might take it for my regular stock.

I’ve been experimenting with different cheaper bourbons and scotches, trying to find something that balances tasting good and not breaking the bank. Bulleitt is definitely good-tasting, and the price isn’t outrageous. I might take it for my regular stock.

You should try Jim Beam Black. My favorite is Woodford for Bourbon. I don’t know much about Scotch. On my birthdays when I could afford to I have purchased Balvenie 12 (their basic) and Talisker Storm last year. I really wanted to and should have gone completely peaty. Not this birthday because I can’t afford it (a PBR birthday) but sometime in the future.

This is why I referred to the Green Party the other day as a “holier than thou” circle jerk. They don’t give a flying frak about winning elections, which is what you need to do if you want to make your ideals reality. They just come out of the woodwork every 4 years to cast a protest vote so they can claim “moral superiority.”

This is not at all relevant, but mr. klys brought me home a fantastic gin from London.

We have a wedding to go to in the UK next July and I am happy to finally get to go shopping at the wonderful store where he buys these things (which is actually a Scotch/whiskey specialty store).

Woodford is good, but a bit more spendy than I’d like. I am not a fan of straight Jim Beam, but I might have to try the Black. I purchased The Macallan 12-year for our anniversary, but that is for super-special occasions only.

If you get the chance, go to Yoichi, Hokkaido and take the tour of the Nikka distillery there. They make some seriously nice whisky and you can get free samples of it and their apple wine as well. You get off the train, walk about 100 yards from the station and there’s the distillery.

Jensen’s, but it’s impossible to find the US. Mostly because he asked for the good stuff that really isn’t imported. Small batch done in London, on the floral side.

In terms of good stuff - there is a noticable difference between 10 and Tanq, but not enough that I would think it makes a difference to preference. I’m a big gin and tonic fan, and the tonic water is going to make a huge difference. Whole Foods has a good tonic water that’s like $4 for a 6-pack of cans (enough for 12 drinks for me). It’s just their 365 brand. Plays really nicely with a wide variety of gins.

If it’s a place that has a good selection, you might see the Botanist. I’d recommend that. Hendrick’s isn’t bad but not on my top five list. (Most of my top five list is probably hard to find most places. I keep a good selection at home.) Trying to think of what else I see reasonably often. St. George does some stuff, but that might be more common out here because CA. I have some stuff from Smuggler’s Notch out your way but haven’t tried it yet.

As an addendum, if you like bourbon you might like the St. George that comes in the red ink bottle. (They do three gins, different color inks for the label printing. Red, green, blue. Don’t ask me their names, I have no idea.) That one uses a rye base. It’s very obvious. I hate rye so it’s one of the gins I avoid.

Also a more rye-heavy gin is Death’s Door out of MI.

Gin is so underappreciated. Probably because for a lot of folks, like you said, it’s the tequila-type liquor. But there is SO MUCH variety and it’s such a fantastic sipping drink (as a gin and tonic).

In SF there is a bar called Whitechapel that is incredibly dangerous for me. All gin. ALL. Like 300+ varieties. I am sloooooooooooooooowly working my way through the list, although I keep getting distracted by the special edition stuff they get. (It doesn’t help that we get up there like once every two months, if that. Sigh.)

I suggest they approach JK Rowling and see what the licensing fees for the Slytherin name would be. It would be a huge step up from Trump while still representing the brand accurately.

”..While shooting the 13th season of The Apprentice, Donald Trump repeatedly used a racial slur to refer to rapper and contestant Lil Jon—even after several producers urged him to stop, three staffers on the show told The Daily Beast…”

“…In the heat of competition, Lil Jon bought and donned an Uncle Sam costume to help advertise the “beautiful” hair product.

During the day’s shoot, Trump himself caught wind of this gimmick and began referring to Lil Jon around Apprentice staff as “Uncle Tom” instead of Uncle Sam.

“Look, he’s Uncle Tom!” one longtime Apprentice staffer recalled Trump blurting out at least twice. The staffer said Trump was utterly tone-deaf to the racially charged history of the term, which is used to deride a black man deemed to be subservient to white people…”

I was thinking that he may not be able to vote if he’s not offered bail and can’t raise the money. Do they let those in jail who haven’t been convicted go to the polls and vote? Do they transport them there and back? Is there a voting precinct at local jails?

That’s why I’m not talking to one of my sisters until Christmas. She was frothing with Hillary hate last spring and she’s probably only gotten worse as the election gets closer. She hated Trump back then but I bet she likes him now.

I’d really like my party to operate on principles, and I’d like to tell myself that it does, but the reality is that it’s probably based on some level of what they think they can get away with on a political basis. Because, ultimately, their goal is to get Democrats elected, and having the party held to standards requires the majority of the members to hold the party to those standards based on principles. I don’t think most humans are capable of that.

But I can hold myself to those standards.

Yeah ultimately a political party is about getting other members of that party elected hence why I really don’t find myself outraged by some of the backdoor stuff that Wikileads tries to expose. I just resent one party for trying to portray themselves as having moral integrity for years and the other for having none. In short, don’t tell us he who cast the first stone when your party literally impeached a president for lying about an affair and now is trying to do damage control because their own nominee has a lot of his own problems.

Johnson may not be Clinton but at least he’s not Trump?

I don’t actually talk politics with my dad. I didn’t realize before this how much both my parents were raised Republican (I knew that about my dad, but not so much my mom). I was raised politically neutral - we didn’t really talk about it. I wasn’t ignorant of what was happening, but my parents taught me values, not party lines.

Which is probably why I’m so liberal, because the values were “care for other people” and “treat other people as humans” and not “tax cuts for yourself before anything else.” (Slight snark there. Slight.)

(Also apparently I need to somehow get this memo to my grandparents, because my mother is in trouble for the fact that we have grown up so liberal. Hah, if anything I made sure my sisters turned out as reasonable human beings. I’M AT FAULT GRANDPA. But I have my mother’s permission to send back Snopes links to my heart’s content.)

All four were Democrats though my mom’s parents were probably a little different than my Dad’s parents when it came to approach. I’d say mom’s parents were more populist and dad’s parents more liberal. Both definitely left of center but different approaches. I never knew my dad’s dad. I think he would be scared by Trump. My Dad’s told me that Reagan running in ‘76 bothered him and he talked about moving to Canada if Reagan was elected. No idea how seriously he really was about that since he died in ‘79.

Headed straight for my dad’s family. Gonna be some rather uncomfortable days going forward, waiting for news that everybody’s alright.

I’m here in Brookings, Oregon, and we’re getting warnings for the storm hitting the coast with gusts up to 60 MPH and 75 MPH tomorrow. Last night we were hammered with 60 MPH gusts so that was just the warm up act. One more front is supposed to move through after the one tomorrow but no word yet on the severity. Right now the ocean is roaring, drowning out the harbor buoy and foghorn. Our house is about two blocks from the southernmost bluff overlooking the Pacific, so the winds are expected to go right up our street. One of our cats, Stewie, just falls apart when shit hits the fan with our weather, so I’ll be babysitting that big boy. Our little boy, Morty, blithely ignores storms and even likes to watch them from our garage (when I have the door open). He’s a Snowshoe kitty and loves the water. :)

We feel for the guy who owns the house at the end of our street (it’s a T intersection at the north end) because his yard fills up with everything that flies down our street.

He ended up running a blacksmith shop and having several children, the youngest of which was my dad’s paternal grandmother. He got murdered when she was only a few years old and they still don’t know who did it.

We feel for the guy who owns the house at the end of our street (it’s a T intersection at the north end) because his yard fills up with everything that flies down our street.

Nope, they don’t even know who did it. His body was found in the Ohio river somewhere away from Pittsburgh with bruises on it. According to a contemporary account of the story I found in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette archives, he was only identified because he had some of his papers on him. We knew about the blacksmith shop for years. My dad’s parents had a photo of it at their place but we really had no idea bout the murder part. We actually have a photo of his wife in our house.

I’m descended from Zipporah Wheeler who was murdered in Connecticut in 1678, along with 2 of her 3 children. I can’t immediately find the reference, but the case got a fair amount of press even later on as the Indian servants were charged at first, but then it came out that a transient teenager did it.

I was blessed with long-lived grandparents. 3 of my great grandparents were alive when I was born:
Paternal grandmother’s mother died in 1954 when I was 5. She was 75.
Paternal grandmother’s father died in 1960, when I was 11. He was 82.
Maternal grandmother’s mother died in 1988, when I was 38. She was 102.
Both of my grandfathers died in 1980, when I was 30. They were 81 and 78.
My paternal grandmother died in 1990 when I 40. She was 86.
My maternal gramdmother died in 2013 when I was 64. She was 105.

My wife and her brother have as a great-x3 uncle Cole Younger (of the James Gang).

My brother-in-law recently bought a foreclosed home in Texas owned by the Northfield Bank of Minnesota. The title was fouled up and it turned out the bank also owned the property next to it, so he got both houses for the price of one (claiming his family finally got their victory over Northfield).

Let’s just be clear: violence does not equal civil war.

I think there are an awful lot of people who may support their ideals without violence but who would recoil from the idea of using violence to impose them, or to separate from the US at this point in time. Could I see Trump saying that? Maybe.

Could I see the rest of the Republicans backing him? That’s a much different question.

Oh yeah—and Thanksgiving is at his house. We did a preview this summer—22 people at a party at his house and it was 20-2 (he and
Bircher wife stood alone.) I found that when he would go off on a tangent, I’d pull out my phone and show him pictures of Hillary from a rally and that would shut him up for awhile.

I’ve mentioned before that, when at my brother’s, when things get heated, I step outside with my nephew and my sister for a smoke. True, it gets kind of cold at Thanksgiving, and it takes my lungs 3 days to recover, but it’s worth it.

“Some amount of violence” is the operative term. I think we will see some of that, enough to be a real trauma as the media play it up; but nothing that would qualify as civil war. In particular, I don’t think we will see any organized entity larger than a nutcake sheriff’s office in open revolt. The “lone wolves” may cause some grief and damage but they will be snuffed out quickly and will have no effect on the fundamental structure of society.

I am not terribly worried.

I live a few miles from a Christian Identity church that has called for years for the death of atheists and liberals.

I live in a town almost entirely composed of conservatives, that has more guns than people (that is true), which also elected this atheist liberal twice. Even a Bernie Sanders sign in my yard elicited zero offensive remarks. A Sanders sticker on the most recognisable car in my county (a Smart with Gold Star Family plates) has gotten me zero remarks.

While most people in my town supported Donald Trump initially, most have rejected him.

In the sixty mile drive there used to be Trump yard signs and billboards on ranches by the hundreds.

Today she said she only saw two yard signs.

This fits in with our trip to Cheyenne a couple days ago, where we saw no Trump sign anywhere in the city (but a lot of Johnson/Weld signs and two Johnson/Weld billboards).
