Probably best not to insert fictionalized tale into the debate. Which Trump could spin as “media bias”

And this is Pixar, which, while a part of Disney now, got started more on its own. And the intros to Up and Wall-E aren’t exactly sunshine.

I would love for Pixar to do an adult cartoon. I don’t mean blood and guts type stuff, but something like Hell or High Water sophisitcation animated (no I haven’t seen the movie, but I know what it’s about).

When the media spent so much time playing up the “Trump pivot,” I don’t think they imagined that he’d pivot from being a boorish asshole to being a sexual predator. I’m sure they expected to hear a story or two about his being the sort of guy who grabbed an ass or two, but allegations of his having forced himself on women was probably not what they figured the last weeks of the election would hang on.

Anti-Defamation League and Matt Furie (the creator of Pepe the Frog) have launched an initiative on Twitter to #savePepe

huffingtonpost.com;

“Pepe was never intended to be used as a symbol of hate,” Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO, explained in a statement. “The sad frog was meant to be just that, a sad frog. We are going to work with Matt and his community of artists to reclaim Pepe so that he might be used as a force for good, or at the very least to help educate people about the dangers of prejudice and bigotry.”

To start, Furie and the ADL are encouraging all the non-racist corners of the internet to spread the hashtag #SavePepe across social media platforms, to overshadow Pepe’s more profane alter egos.

Furie is also scheduled to speak at ADL’s inaugural “Never Is Now” Summit against anti-Semitism on November 17 in New York, where he’ll participate in a panel discussion focused on “the manifestations and consequences of online hate.”

From the synopsis of Borrowed Time:

A weathered Sheriff returns to the remains of an accident he has spent a lifetime trying to forget. With each step forward, the memories come flooding back. Faced with his mistake once again, he must find the strength to carry on.

there’s a Czech animated film you might enjoy that with a very similar theme. It’s a bit more conventional animation, rotoscoped, like A Scanner Darkly.

It’s called Alois Nebel and here’s the trailer:

ALOIS NEBEL by Tomáš Luňák - Trailer (HQ)

The synopsis is thematically similar to the Pixar short - memories of painful things.

Alois Nebel is a 2011 Czech animated drama film directed by Tomáš Luňák, based on the comic-book trilogy by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99. It is set in the late 1980s in a small village in the Jeseník Mountains, close to the Polish border, and tells the story of a train dispatcher who begins to suffer from hallucinations where the present converges with the dark past of the expulsion of Germans after World War II.

That looked like a realistic possibility before the 1st Debate. Now the interesting question is whether Trump’s loss is so bad that he hands Congress to the Democrats.

Tom doesn’t seem to understand that such thinking assumes two things:

1. Trump will not contest the results, he’ll accept he lost and slink away. Not gonna happen.

2. The party base will accept Trump’s loss and move on. The people who are presently raging against any Republican who will not support Trump and openly calling for voters to vote just Trump and walk away? Yeah, not gonna happen.

Tom needs to come to terms with the reality that his party is headed for a very messy breakup in three weeks, it’s not coming back from the brink overnight.

Trump is every negative campaign tactic the GOP has used for the last 20+ years rolled into one.

1992: “Don’t vote Clinton, he’s a draft-dodger!”
1996: “Don’t vote Clinton, he’s a whoremonger!”
2000: “Don’t vote Gore, his daddy got him a plum job during Vietnam!”
2004: “Don’t vote Kerry, he doesn’t support the troops because he’s against the Iraq War!”
2008: “Don’t vote Obama, he’s totally inexperienced!”
2012: “Don’t vote Obama, he supports moochers and tax-dodgers!”

Trying to argue that he is anything but the party’s worst impulses incarnate is absolute garbage.

Nationally, children die in accidental shootings at pace of one every other day

A 4-year-old boy finds a gun, shoots himself and dies from his wound. A 6-year-old boy accidentally shoots his 9-year-old brother, resulting in fractured ribs and blood buildup in the boy’s chest. A 2-year-old boy sees a gun slide out from under driver’s seat and picks it up. The gun fires, sending a bullet through the seat in front of him, killing his mother.

All three of these tragedies occurred in Milwaukee this year — two of them in September.

A new analysis from the Associated Press and the USA TODAY Network has found minors are dying from accidental shootings at a pace of one every other day during the first half of this year. That’s a far greater pace than indicated by federal data.

Johnson, Feingold clash in first debate

Democrat Russ Feingold and Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson clashed over Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Obamacare and national security during their first debate Friday night.

With polls tightening, the two candidates who battled for the seat in 2010 were eager to spell out their differences, rally their supporters and appeal to a small slice of voters who remain undecided.

And panelists in the rapid-fire, hour-long debate cut right to the chase, asking the two candidates about their support for the presidential nominees of their party.

Johnson said that Trump’s vulgar comments about groping women made in a 2005 video were “indefensible,” but he sought to find “areas of agreement” with the GOP nominee.

However, even if there were widespread voter intimidation (unlikely), it will not change the electoral math of the blue states, and voter intimidation of democrats in red states such as mine doesn’t make any difference. (No matter how many liberals vote in my House district, it will go for Mr. Trump. Moreover, we have mail voting.)

I’m starting to get really cynical about politics, but not in the standard, “Plague on both your houses!” way. Say what you will about career politicians, and their perks and pork barrel projects and all the rest of the corruption - they actually got shit done. They said awful things about each other and all, but then they cut back room deals and they passed bills, confirmed appointments, etc. Even under Reagan, with Dem majorities in the House and Senate, they got shit done.

Then Reagan nominated Robert Bork. That dude was nuts. Reagan was warned about nominating him, but he did it anyway. The Judiciary Committee voted NOT TO recommend confirmation, but Bork insisted on a full Senate vote. Probably other Presidents would not nominate someone who they were told would not be confirmed, but Reagan did. I know a number of Conservatives for whom that was a watershed moment, To them, Bork’s failed confirmation was such a terrible thing, and all Ted Kennedy’s doing.

I tend to disbelieve the idea of the watershed moment. More like that’s the excuse. In any case, after that, there was a rise in the ‘bomb throwers.’ Pretty soon, Gingrich and his crowd of vitriolic clowns started elbowing out the old crowd of guys who knew how to get shit done. People started talking about Term Limits as a panacea, and politicla outsiders as some sort of magical thing.

And here we are. The Tea Party wing of the GOP managed to get a lot of hardliners elected, who won’t compromise at all. And nothing gets done, Because they will neither compromise nor accept the fact that they don’t control everything. And the voters who put those guys in are fanatical about ideological purity and lack of compromise.

So, when I hear someone look at this race, or the total obstruction of everything Obama tries to do, and calls it “Politics As Usual”, I think, No, this ISN’T politics as usual. Politics as usual is a lot of horsetrading, pressure, compromise, swapping favors, cutting deals, pork barrel projects, etc. It’s kinda ugly, and it’s not very inspiring and uplifting. Nobody’s going to make a movie about the guy who goes to Washington and becomes remarkably effective by cutting backroom deals. No, they’ll make ‘Mr Smith Goes To Washington’, where the idealistic hero risks all to bring down the corrupt system. But a government of ‘Mr. Smiths’ gets nothing done because they won’t cut deals that compromise something they want to win something they want more.

I mention this because I’m hearing about the WikiLeaks stuff from Podesta and the HRC campaign, where Clinton comes across as a cautious politician willing to talk to or work with anyone to advance a set of progressive goals. That’s actually what I want in a President. I want someone who WILL compromise, who WILL accept 1/2 of a goal, knowing you can go back later and get more. People loved Bernie because he was uncompromising, but honestly - what has he done with his 3 decades in Congress?

So, apparently, the Independent found a mental health assessment from Rodrigo Duterte’s divorce:

A psychological report on Rodrigo Duterte was commissioned by Dr Natividad Dayan during the annulment of his marriage to ex-wife Elizabeth Zimmerman in July 1998, when Mr Duterte was mayor of Davao City.

The assessment found Mr Duterte suffered from “antisocial narcissistic personality disorder”, a pattern of abnormal behaviour characterised by “gross indifference, insensitivity and self-centeredness” and “grandiose sense of self-entitlement and manipulative behaviours”.

Gee, that looks familiar.

There wasn’t one capable or inspiring person in the infamous “Clown Car” lineup. All 16 of the non-Trump entrants were dunces, religious zealots, wimps or tyrants, all equally out of touch with voters. Scott Walker was a lipless sadist who in centuries past would have worn a leather jerkin and thrown dogs off the castle walls for recreation. Marco Rubio was the young rake with debts. I’ve heard that pointed out on more than one occasion, that as nasty as this election has gotten, it still doesn’t hold a candle to the 60’s in general and ‘68 in particular. People despairing over the fabric of our nation and worrying that this election will leave it permanently frayed need remember that we survived the assassination of a presidential candidate. The system has a way of righting itself, even if it involves a shitload of screaming and yelling along the way.

re: #81 Targetpractice

I’ve heard that pointed out on more than one occasion, that as nasty as this election has gotten, it still doesn’t hold a candle to the 60’s in general and ‘68 in particular. People despairing over the fabric of our nation and worrying that this election will leave it permanently frayed need remember that we survived the assassination of a presidential candidate. The system has a way of righting itself, even if it involves a shitload of screaming and yelling along the way.

The assassination of both Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. in the very same year.

Kennedy’s assassination made about zero sense, as the only reason his assassin did it was to become famous. Dr. King’s assassination was the direct result of the Civil Rights Movement. The riots that followed were horrific.

At the same time, massive protests were occurring over the Vietnam War. Kent State’s massacre was only two years after that.

The folk that Mr. Trump has emboldened have always existed in our society, and as soon as Mr. Trump’s campaign is put away, they will go back into hiding.

i appreciate everybody’s reassuring words. i have to say, though, i remember 1968, i was a teenager then, and despite the riots and assasinations i remember a different flavor than now. i recall the despair of the murder of our heroes and the election of nixon - now the war would go on and the ‘america, love it or leave it’ crowd would reign supreme - but a number of important battles had been won and progress still had momentum

i dont believe the evils will put themselves back into pandora’s box if and when trump is defeated. the haters have been instructed that to be a good person - “politically correct” - is wrong and dangerous, and that if hillary wins it will only be a sign of the corrupt power of, ahem, “international bankers”. not for nothing was this phrase enunciated this afternoon and the time was taken to point out that carlos slim is, in fact, mexican

i dont know what’s going to happen after election day but i dont expect sweetness and light

Of course the evils will not put themselves back into Pandora’s Box. They never have; they just arise again in new forms.

I was younger in 1968, eight years old. I remember vaguely George Wallace then (eight year olds aren’t particularly political). I distinctly remember the Vietnam War, as my father was killed in 1968. I vaguely remember the riots in Detroit, though I have no memory of the assassinations of Robert Kennedy or Martin Luther King. A few years earlier, I was attending a white segregated school in Maryland.

My reading of that time (and querying my mother about it) seems to show it was a hell of a lot worse than anything going on right now. The most dangerous terrorist organisation in the USA arose from the Youth for Wallace (the National Alliance).

A lot of Trump’s supporters couldn’t organise a card game, and Mr. Trump has no organisation on the scale of Governor Wallace.

Neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan have been around for a very long time, but are only shadows of the power they once held. Charles Lindburgh’s “America First” rhetoric was also aligned with the real Nazis of the time.

This looks bad today primarily because a lot of people today weren’t around when things were far worse (such as the Sixties), and none from the Civil War period.

My wife just read that Jim Wright essay I linked above.

She grew up in segregated Missouri; she notes today she is a racist. Like many of the commentators at Mr. Wright’s blog, she also notes that she is quite aware of her racist attitudes she grew up with, and consciously works to avoid treating anyone differently for reasons of race (or other differences).

For my part, I have not noticed her ever, since I married her, taking some position I would recognise as a racist stance.

I would like to think I have never held racist positions. One of the reasons my mother moved her children to Michigan was she was appalled I had to go to a segregated school in Maryland, and told my father she would not permit such a thing. (He agreed.)

I do not ever recall holding a racist or sexist position in my life, but if someone holds up to me such a position, I will gladly examine it and try to excise it from my future behaviour.

Good. The more bigots and racists come out into the light, the more can be identified.

There seem to be an awful lot of stupid people on Facebook and Twitter that put the name of their company or whatnot into their profiles. For large companies it makes it easier for them to get rid of such employees (for disparaging the reputation of the company); for individual businesses it makes it easier to identify who not to spend money with.

That is sort of like a Trump yard sign on the lawn of a business: I know which local businesses I will not spend my money at.

Two men charged with hate crime in attack on Sikh man in California

Two men who are accused of attacking a Sikh man in California by punching him, knocking off his turban and cutting his hair were charged on Friday with assault as a hate crime, according to local media.

The attack followed a number of similar beatings of Sikhs in the United States over a period of more than a decade.

Hate crime-tracking groups say assailants have occasionally mistaken Sikhs for Muslims, who themselves have also been victimized in religiously motivated hate crimes.

I’m not sure I misunderstand the issue.

ADL has always attracted “trolls” even long before there was an Internet, and this isn’t just an initiative of theirs, the creator of Pepe the Frog is also involved.

Twitter is nothing more than a 140-character instantaneous reflection of what people have always said and written, just now in real time.

ADL has always called out bigotry and hatred; that is their objective. When the racists and bigots come out to attack them, they expose themselves for others to see.

We had a motel here in the spring that allowed a fund raising group for Mr. Trump to set up a tractor trailer selling Trump gear.

That motel is now up for sale: the fallout from that, even in this very pro-Trump area, killed their business.

It is much better for the bigots to be out in the open rather than in the shadows.

Pretty much what I expected. Once these assholes get their claws into something it’s almost always best to write it off. Yes.

Let’s see if I understand the logic you propose:

a) Offensive thing occurs (in this case Pepe the Frog hijacked by Nazis)
b) Someone attempts corrective measure
c) Corrective measure draws criticism and attacks from same offenders
d) Corrective measure should never have been tried.

therefore… .

e) No one should try corrective measures.

Alternative example:

a) Racism has occurred throughout the USA’s history
b) Someone attempts corrective measure (Martin Luther King)
c) Corrective measure draws criticism and attacks from same offenders (King killed)
d) Corrective measure should never have been tried (King should have left racists alone)

Do I have that right?

Same argument as “Google it.” If you think I made a logical mistake, it is incumbent on you to point it out.

As I see it in my two examples, the only difference is degree (hijacking of a cartoon character versus an assassination). The procession of statements is precisely the same.

a) Peace symbol (actually the symbol of the organisation of Nuclear Disarmament) is hijacked by evangelical Christians to mean satanism (they often refer to it as a broken cross)
b) Peace symbol is explained (semaphore “N” plus “D”)
c) Evangelicals continue to attack symbol.
d) Explanation should never have been tried and peace symbol should be abandoned.

I’ll take every symbolic victory over racism I can get.

Too bad Christians don’t try to take back their symbol from the racists that promote it. Perhaps they should abandon the cross, since racists burn it on people’s lawn and justify their bigotry with it.

After all, it would only be a symbolic victory; surely Christians can use a different symbol (or holy book since that is used the same way)

Well, for starters, you attributed to me this: “e) No one should try corrective measures”.

This was absolutely dishonest on your part, since it in no way followed from what I wrote.

It is incumbent upon you to represent your opponent’s arguments fairly and without distortion. You have failed at that.

But let me humor you. Here’s what I actually wrote:

1. An insignificant offensive thing happens.
2. A corrective action is not called for.
3. If one nevertheless wants to take a corrective action, one should be sure that the probability of success is larger than the probability of failure.
4. Due to the nature of the medium where the offensive thing happened, as well as due to the nature of the offensive thing, the probability of success is nil.
5. An attempt at corrective action nevertheless happens.
6. It inevitably fails.
7. Dumb. Don’t do it again.

So you are offended by the degree? I selected Dr. King precisely because he is only a difference of degree. My selection of Dr. King was deliberate.

Go back and read that analogy again. So because Dr. King was killed, we should abandon what Dr. King tried to accomplish with his life?

I agree that the cartoon frog is hardly on the level of Dr. King’s life work, however, both the ADL and the creator are also pushing back against creeping racism by trying to reclaim the frog from racists.

So if the ADL chose instead, “We’ll we’ll cede this ground because it is not worth it,” what happens when the next symbol is hijacked. Perhaps the Democratic Party symbol. Or the Christian Cross (as in my example above). Do you cede all ground?

Drumpfskind did not create his marks, in the most cases, but harvested them from the already ripe field of marks:

Theologian Norman Geisler Explains How America Abandoned God, and What It Can Do to Reclaim His Favor

Christian theologian Norman Geisler said on Friday at a major Christian apologetics conference that America has paid a heavy price for abandoning God, such as rising rates of teen suicide, divorce, violent crime, and abortion, but urged Americans to rediscover their Christian roots and get back in God’s favor.

[…]

Charting back America’s history to 1620 with the first pilgrims on the Mayflower, he noted that the first thing the settlers did upon arrival was thank God in their prayers.

[…]

This is pretty standard in fundamentalist circles, but is not the real story of this country.

What they leave off is all the colonization before 1620.

They leave it off because it doesn’t fit their narrative.

[…]

The apologist then pointed to the 1859 publication of The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin as the point when America started losing its favor with God, as the questioning of God also led to the questioning of God-given morals.

[…]

Always.

Always.

There’s one way I could see the ADL doing something useful with this kind of reclaim Pepe initiative, to partner with Twitter, Facebook and Google to use such a thing as a honeypot to identify and track / map antisemitic activity and relationships. Of course they can do that anyway and better just using Pepe and other racist hashtags as they are, and I’m dubious about Silicon Valley’s understanding of the problem and willingness to address it as such.

Allowing dog whistles to go unchallenged is how we got the idea that “states’ rights” doesn’t mean the same thing as “segregation.”

No I don’t challenge Twitter Nazis, as I am not on Twitter. I do challenge racist statements in real life. I haven’t heard too many people talk about Pepe the Frog where I live, but I have heard such things as “we’d be better off separated.”

Well, the creator of the cartoon frog is the guy trying to take it back. Moreover, this is a recent phenomenon, not something from seventy years ago.

He never copyrighted his cartoon, so he has no legal recourse there.

He is left with two alternatives:

a) Let it go, and be associated with a neo-Nazi meme
b) Fight against the neo-Nazis appropriating his work.

Perhaps his attempt to reclaim his creation is doomed to failure. I don’t know, and neither do you. It is his creation though, and if he wants to expend his energy in that direction I am not opposed to it.

Drumpfskind did not create his marks, in the most cases, but harvested them from the already ripe field of marks:

Theologian Norman Geisler Explains How America Abandoned God, and What It Can Do to Reclaim His Favor

This is pretty standard in fundamentalist circles, but is not the real story of this country.

What they leave off is all the colonization before 1620.

They leave it off because it doesn’t fit their narrative.

Always.

Always.

The same old same old. Nothing bad happened at all before Certain Time T, because before T Americans were all God-fearing, chaste and well behaved. After T, America lost God and crime and immorality went through the roof. *Especially* after Darwin suggested that God was really not the Creator of humans.

Any historian worth his or her salt knows otherwise. The Pilgrims were just as naughty as modern day people. Teen pregnancy happened, because people married young — often as a result of pregnancy. There were murders, robberies, physical assaults, yada yada yada. Likewise in the other colonies.

It’s not like Darwin set off a crime bomb in 1857 or anything.

Which is precisely why Pepe is a good “dog whistle” for Neo-Nazis.

I doubt you would find many people who even know Taylor Swift has been hijacked by them either, or anime characters.

I can’t be everywhere at once with my liberal super powers. I have directly called out racist statements in my little town, and in public. I will not fault the ADL for calling out racism where they see it as well.

David Duke has been accused of ripping off blonde women’s photos from Instagram without their permission for his “save Western civilization” posters and images.

Pepe’s creator should have copyrighted his cartoon frog, and gotten litigious about its indiscriminate use by anyone else. Now it’s too late. Pepe has been appropriated by the wrong people, who could give a shit about fair use or ethics.

Personally, I don’t find the character especially cute or appealing. I wish the ADL and Pepe’s creator luck in taking it back.

So I was discussing JB again on another board and it got me thinking.
Suppose for a sec that that thing between her and Hillary happened. Something that she interpreted as intimidation because of the tone. In such a case - would H even know about the alleged rape? Suppose Bill told something Hillary - would that have been “I raped someone?” or “There’s this woman I slept with, this could become a problem?”. In which case, under all those assumptions, H would have seen JB as Bill’s one-night stand, and wouldn’t have been motivated to be warm to her.

OK, as others downthread have been faster with —

The judge has NOT in any meaningful way “allowed it to go forward” because the case has not reached the stage at which the judge would make any assessment of it. The OD author claiming the judge is convinced “there is more than enough probable cause to move forward” apparently does not understand that “probable cause” is a criminal law concept, not a civil one.

The court issued a routine case management order in a civil case. It’s boilerplate.

The December date is NOT a hearing. It is a status conference, and reflects absolutely no judgment that the case will go forward. It is NOT “hauling Donald Trump into court” — he need not appear. Again, this is routine civil litigation practice that has absolutely nothing to do with the merits. It’s just “you filed; get on with it and don’t screw up our filing-to-disposition stats.” That’s all.

The status conference keeps getting postponed because the plaintiff’s representatives — incompetently or more likely strategically — appear not to have their act together. Withdrawing & re-filing rather than amending, failing to effect service of process, etc., etc. — as soon as they milk it for whatever political mileage they can get out of people talking about Jeffrey Epstein and Bill Clinton, it will likely be withdrawn or dismissed yet again.

Debunking the disreality crowd:

Climate scientists published a paper debunking Ted Cruz

A new study has just appeared in the Journal of Climate which deals with an issue commonly raised by those who deny that human-caused climate change is a serious risk. […]

One contrarian argument has appeared repeatedly over the past few years, even at a hearing before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce held by Ted Cruz in 2015. The claim was by well-known contrarian John Christy. Christy claimed that the mid-troposphere temperatures (temperatures in approximately the middle of the atmosphere) are rising three times faster in climate models when compared with measurements. Another related claim is that there has been no statistically significant warming in the troposphere (lower part of the atmosphere) for 18 years.

[…]

This satellite claim is very popular with deniers who desperately want to sound all intelligent and everything… but as Abraham notes it doesn’t work.

Anyway, here’s the paper to which Abraham refers:

Comparing tropospheric warming in climate models and satellite data

We use updated and improved satellite retrievals of the temperature of the mid- to upper troposphere (TMT) to address key questions about the size and significance of TMT trends, agreement with model-derived TMT values, and whether models and satellite data show similar vertical profiles of warming. A recent study claimed that TMT trends over 1979 and 2015 are three times larger in climate models than in satellite data, but did not correct for the contribution TMT trends receive from stratospheric cooling. Here we show that the average ratio of modeled and observed TMT trends is sensitive to both satellite data uncertainties and to model-data differences in stratospheric cooling. When the impact of lower stratospheric cooling on TMT is accounted for, and when the most recent versions of satellite datasets are used, the previously claimed ratio of three between simulated and observed near-global TMT trends is reduced to ≈ 1.7. Next, we assess the validity of the statement that satellite data show no significant tropospheric warming over the last 18 years. This claim is not supported by our analysis: in five out of six corrected satellite TMT records, significant global-scale tropospheric warming has occurred within the last 18 years. Finally, we address long-standing concerns regarding discrepancies in modeled and observed vertical profiles of warming in the tropical atmosphere. We show that amplification of tropical warming between the lower and mid- to upper troposphere is now in close agreement in the average of 37 climate models and in one updated satellite record.

i appreciate everybody’s reassuring words. i have to say, though, i remember 1968, i was a teenager then, and despite the riots and assasinations i remember a different flavor than now. i recall the despair of the murder of our heroes and the election of nixon - now the war would go on and the ‘america, love it or leave it’ crowd would reign supreme - but a number of important battles had been won and progress still had momentum

i dont believe the evils will put themselves back into pandora’s box if and when trump is defeated. the haters have been instructed that to be a good person - “politically correct” - is wrong and dangerous, and that if hillary wins it will only be a sign of the corrupt power of, ahem, “international bankers”. not for nothing was this phrase enunciated this afternoon and the time was taken to point out that carlos slim is, in fact, mexican

i dont know what’s going to happen after election day but i dont expect sweetness and light

Just remember we are on the right side of history. The haters are part of a shrinking minority. They are losing; that is why they are so shrill.

here’s your problem in a nutshell:

25 percent of Americans ‘completely distrust the economic data reported by the federal government, including statistics like the unemployment rate, the number of jobs added, and the amount of consumer spending.’ Perhaps unsurprisingly, that number soars to 48% of Donald Trump supporters compared to just 5% of Hillary Clinton supporters.

and, you know, that monolith, unitary, borg-like “economy”…:

The survey also found that 62 percent of Americans believe the economy is “rigged” in favor of certain groups.

My email spam filter caught a message from the Governor of Texas in which he treats the “threat” of a Democratic takeover to that of an ISIS invasion.

You built that Greg! We’re coming for you!

They’re coming after Texas.

If you had any doubts about what Democrats have planned for you and me, Hillary Clinton’s VP pick, Tim Kaine, laid them bare during a multiday fundraising blitz across Texas. We must keep Texas red!

With a shocking 1-point lead here in the Lone Star State, Democrats are holding nothing back. In addition to the three campaign offices that Hilary Clinton’s campaign opened up in Texas earlier this year, the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C. has just announced the opening of their office in Houston.

Make no mistake, this move is not only intended to help Clinton win Texas in November, but help other down-ballot races as they set their eyes on taking over our state in 2018.

Whether it’s our Constitutional rights, undermining border security, Obamacare, the job-killing EPA, or ignoring the sanctity of life, President Obama and his Washington, D.C., Democrat pals continue to do whatever they can to undermine and attack Texas values.

/snip ………blah, blah, blah, blah /snip

Not only that, but I’m going to do everything in my power to stop the national Democrats’ attempts to take over our state. I believe we must do everything we can to rally Texans to FIGHT for the values and freedoms we cherish.

But for daring to take on these battles, I’m making myself a target.

If that tape in which Trump bragged about sexual assault hadn’t hit the air, the polls might yet still be close. In Paula Reid’s definition of terrorism, yes, the Provisional IRA are terrorists, since Ireland is a foreign country.

Except that the Troubles-era Provisional IRA largely operated out of Northern Ireland, which is a part of the United Kingdom. Therefore, by Paula Reid’s definition, acts such as the Guilford and Birmingham pub bombings, and the bombing aimed at the UK government in 1984, are not acts of terrorism.

Except that the Troubles-era Provisional IRA largely operated out of Northern Ireland, which is a part of the United Kingdom. Therefore, by Paula Reid’s definition, acts such as the Guilford and Birmingham pub bombings, and the bombing aimed at the UK government in 1984, are not acts of terrorism.

domestic terrorism in another country is still foreign terrorism to us because its a foreign country to the U.S. remember, the world revolves around U.S.

Well, US Law, which this is about, revolves around the US. As it should.

yeah. i muddled my sarcasm
i was going for something slightly different than the law specifically

more like not mattering what some other country might call domestic terrorism there, we cant legitimize the concept at all else it would change the discussion and focus here

we cannot go from only “others” coming in and committing mayhem to it could be our own citizens. that scares some people and so it cannot be allowed to happen

so domestic terrorism in country x must be pretzel logic labeled “foreign” or else it could happen here

Bit of Japanese culture: the word “gaikokujin” (外国人)means litterally “outside country person”. So when I was in Japan I was a gaikokujin (which is the proper and polite word, the impolite is “gaijin” which is a word far too many gaikokujin use which they ought not if they want to sound intelligent. You will never hear an NHK talking head say “gaijin”.)

Anyway, I once tried to use that word here in the US, to a Japanese person (an instructor), saying that in the US they would in fact be the “gaikokujin”. Nope, I was instructed. Japanese are not “gaikokujin”. Even when they are in a different country.

Sarah Palin certainly considered them to be terrorists; that was a regular part of her stump speech.

Republicans accept that left-wing domestic terrorism is terrorism. They’re more conflicted about calling right-wing domestic terrorism terrorism. When pressed, most will grudgingly admit that Timothy McVeigh was a terrorist; the Bundy Bunch not so much. And it’s only on the left that people will call the KKK terrorist.

Remember the huge outcry when DoJ had their domestic terrorism report a few years back, a project initiated during the Bush admin that was ready for publication early in Obama’s first term?

The distinction here is that US Law only concerns action occurring with the borders of US territory, and only in some very limited situations against US citizens & ofederal organizations outside the US.
If the Bader Meinhoff Gang committed an action outside the US it is not liable under US Law. Now, if BMG personel are in the US, and they are charged in an other country, which we have extradition agreements with, and their charges are covered by a similar law in the US, they can be apprehended and held for extradition to said foegeign country.

This ties in with why President Obama vetoed the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act

if someone does or intends to do mayhem, part of the problem is identifying the “why” or the cause. some things are evident, some are not. and none have to necessarily be causative.

religious affiliation, skin color, country of origin, culture, political cause, voter registration party, etc. may or may not have anything to do with their motivation

some of us recognize and repeat this every time something happens

Getting behind the scare stories of the so-called invasion of Europe lies the real story that is just not present in the current American public discussion:

Africa’s population boom fuels ‘unstoppable’ migration to Europe

[…] As long as population growth in African countries outstrips their ability to educate, house and employ their citizens, large numbers of people will continue to brave the deserts and seas to escape.

“You can’t resolve this by just paying money,” said Owoeye Olumide, a demographer at Bowen university in southwest Nigeria, one of the world’s most densely populated regions.

“There are going to be too many people … the development you need will not be possible. You have to lower fertility rates and bring down population (by educating and empowering women).”

It’s not used often, as far as I know, but Tokyo Governor/blowhard Ishihara Shintaro made it famous a few years ago when he said that in the event of a natural disaster, the self-defense forces should be on the lookout for subversive sangokujin. There is still hatred of the Japanese and Japan here in China, mostly because the textbooks describing the occupation and the many TV serials dramatizing it depict the Japanese as “guizi” (foreign devils) and the Chinese, especially the Communists, as noble patriots protecting their great nation. The Japanese soldiers and officers are invariably portrayed as stupid, conniving, and/or heartless, and for some reason they are terrible shots with guns and run right into Chinese fire.

The government naturally encourages this kind of slant, because China wants wide control of the South and East China Seas. Suggesting that Japan is still the enemy whips up popular support for any military ventures.

Some of my students say they hate the Japan and the Japanese, but when I ask why, they can only cite the occupation. I usually point out that the government and people who were involved in that war are long dead, so hating them now is pointless. Not sure if changes their minds, though.

Interesting times we’re living in. From what I understand the greatest number of tourists to Japan far and away are Chinese. I wonder the extent to which they hold simultaneously hatred, contempt, and admiration (and I mean that on all sides). I’ve heard much the same about South Koreans and Japanese: they have no love for each other’s countries (and there was a recent attack on a Korean family in Japan), but they do like each other’s cuisine, pop culture, etc.

politics (in america) is no longer is a clash of value systems, each of which is in some way valid; a competition between basically well-intentioned people who see the world differently

it has become, not even a conflict of interests, but instead a degenerative, brutal struggle for office in which one side with righteous indignation believes only the other is and only can be capable of behaving despicably

I see William is in, not sure of how many others here now are photography and camera hounds. Yesterday I got a close look at this Arriflex camera thanks to the good folks at Clairemont Camera. Also saw 2 Emmys in their camera prep room. The cam is for super 16mm film. In the pics just the bare bones of the camera and the mounting plate on the bottom. No film mage, no lens. What surprised me was the extensive electronics and the sheer weight of the thing. It’s a functional design art beauty. And suddenly in high demand again. Heh, just realized I didn’t bother with a pic of an Emmy. Fun times to get to meet these folks and check out the gear.

About the advice on intimidation at polling places, step2: “Take a picture” seems flawed. For as long as I can remember, cameras (and more recently, cell phones) have been explicitly forbidden inside polling locations, so it is unlikely that I (or anyone) would have one available on our way to vote.

Of course if you were to observe intimidation, or suspect such, you may decide to leave the que, and later return with a camera/smartphone, in anticipation of trouble, and then leave the que yet again before entering. But upon entering the que a 3rd time, you could be looking rather suspicious yourself.

Quick drive by humor…just saw this on facebook:

How Donald Trump would answer the question: What is 2+2.

“I have to say a lot of people have been asking this question.
No, really.
A lot of people come up to me and they ask me.
They say, ‘What’s 2+2’?
And I tell them look, we know what 2+2 is.

We’ve had almost eight years of the worst kind of math you can imagine.
Oh my God, I can’t believe it.

Addition and subtraction of the 1s the 2s and the 3s.
It’s terrible.
It’s just terrible.

Look, if you want to know what 2+2 is, do you want to know what 2+2 is?
I’ll tell you.

First of all the number 2, by the way, I love the number 2.
It’s probably my favorite number, no it is my favorite number.
You know what, it’s probably more like the number two but with a lot of zeros behind it.
A lot.

If I’m being honest, I mean, if I’m being honest.
I like a lot of zeros.

Except for Marco Rubio, now he’s a zero that I don’t like.
Though, I probably shouldn’t say that.
He’s a nice guy but he’s like, ‘10101000101,’ on and on, like that.
He’s like a computer!
You know what I mean?
He’s like a computer.
I don’t know.
I mean, you know.

So, we have all these numbers, and we can add them and subtract them and add them.
TIMES them even.
Did you know that?

We can times them OR divide them, they don’t tell you that, and I’ll tell you, no one is better at the order of operations than me.
You wouldn’t believe it.

So, we’re gonna be the best on 2+2, believe me.”

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump’s at it again - pushing claims that the election is rigged, the media is out to get him, all while he hasn’t actually rebutted his accusers claims. Doesn’t matter to his supporters though.

Trump knows his supporters don’t care about the details. They don’t care that Trump’s getting his news from conspiracy sites or that Trump’s relying on conspiracy nuts at Infowars or Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit to claim Trump’s accusers aren’t telling the truth - even though they’re all corroborating what Trump admits to have done - groping and grabbing women because he was privileged to do it.

This is what the GOP doesn’t get. Or doesn’t care about. They’ve enabled Trump and they’re stoking the extremism. Trump is laying the groundwork for claiming the election outcome is illegitimate, and we’ve got US Senator Jeff Sessions claiming that this is indeed the case.

This is a whole new level of danger imposed on the nation and the nation’s history of safe and peaceful transfers of power from one administration to the next. These people are attacking the very institutions of government and representative democracy.

We have Oathkeepers who are pushing extremism like Sheriff Clark and threatening violence if they don’t get their way. We have GOPers threatening (and actually) intimidating political opponents across the nation - such as the case where an armed right winger was standing outside a Democrat’s political office. We have Trump urging his extremist base to go and challenge people at the polls on whether they’re entitled to vote.

This is thuggism at its base, and it’s what decades of GOP extremism has wrought. Sure, the GOP hasn’t been explicit about this - that’s what differentiates Trump from prior standard bearers. Trump drops all pretense of civility and hushed tones. He’s all about blunt action. Trump’s difference is on style - the substance was always there.

That’s why ultimately Trump succeeded as the nominee of the GOP. He spoke to the core voters in a way everyone else wasn’t.

That’s also why the GOP can’t recover from this on their own. They’ve compromised their very moral and ethical base to go all in with the immoral and unethical Trump and the irrational hate and fear and bigotry that Trump espouses. Their silence in the face of all the hate and bigotry was assent. They ultimately condoned him, up until the point where 50% of the electorate was attacked (women). That’s when a few decided this was a bridge too far. Except even then, it wasn’t. They still wont repudiate Trump and what he stands for because they ultimately agree with him on the policies.

Donald Trump Is Probably Past The Point Of No Return

headline notwithstanding, i think this is important:

The evidence is still coming in, but polls so far suggest that the tape of Donald Trump discussing sexual assault and the ensuing accusations didn’t cause support for the GOP presidential nominee to collapse.

Instead, the week’s events seem to have reinforced a downward trend that started at the beginning of the month. He’s unlikely to recover, and Trump’s odds of winning on Nov. 8 are less than 1 in 10, according to HuffPost’s projections.

for two reasons, one positive one not:

he was already tanking past redemption whether the tape and its aftermath happened or not

and if the first paragraph is so, why *didnt* the tape cause his support to collapse totally?

I hope Mrs Clinton brings this up at the next debate (assuming Donald even shows)- I.e., ask him to explain excactly HOW he imagines the election is “rigged”. And make it clear from the start that “the press is mean to me” is not an acceptable answer….

winner winner

simply ask “how. specifically, how”

But, he won’t answer coherently. His supporters will love it and everyone else will move on.

no doubt.
and in the context of a debate she can now bookend his answer with

“everyone watching just saw you didnt/cant answer the question, ‘exactly how’”
or
“so you have no idea”
or
“you didnt actually say anything”
or some other such thing

i do this all the time when faced with sweeping generalities and broad meaningless statements. just tell me how. give me a couple of specifics. you either get something off topic, non responsive, or bluster.

and of course, we’re just musing about what she ought to do. im confident her team is way ahead of all of us

Because he relies on patriarchy to carry him forward, so this tape can’t really hurt him with these folks.

Yes, Hillary and team appear to be very good at what they do.

Also don’t forget that while they might break someone’s jaw if such was attempted with their close female relatives by the hoi polloi, that’s different for the figures whom they put on a level above them. Like, you kick your neighbor’s ass is he looks askew at your daughter, but if the King wants her for a night, it’s no problem.

re: #382 jeffreyw

It likely is a Manx or at least has some Manx in its ancestry but all we really know about this one is that it showed up in someone’s yard. They brought him in to the shelter. The tail is naturally short, not an amputation.

My Manx has about an inch, and all his 4 litter mates had full tails. (I got one of his brothers too, and sometimes call him ‘monkeytail’.) Manx is not the only short-tail breed, but probably the most common. Part Manxes can be healthier than ‘purebreds’ because they can be born a vertebra too short.

Donald Trump Is Probably Past The Point Of No Return

headline notwithstanding, i think this is important:

for two reasons, one positive one not:

he was already tanking past redemption whether the tape and its aftermath happened or not

and if the first paragraph is so, why *didnt* the tape cause his support to collapse totally?

Because 40% of the voters think Hillary is Satan Incarnate (literally, in the case of Alex Jones).

Because the Christian Taliban think he’ll let them pick SC justices, and ban abortion nationwide. He promised them that the nuts at Heritage could pick them, but he’d probably betray them and sell the seats to the highest bidders. Lots of Conservatives will elect a monster if that will ban abortion.

A lot of people also want the women, Jews, atheists, and other minorities put in their place. but they’re probably a minority of the Republicans in most states.

re: #171 Backwoods_Sleuth

“he just can’t help himself”

He certainly didn’t feel this way during the GOP Primary or at the beginning of the General Primary when he was receiving millions in free advertising/exposure. He loves positive media attention hates the negative media attention he’s brought onto himself because of his arrogance and big- *ss, very loose, mouth.
