Trump Pledges to Accept Election Results… “If I Win”

Donald Trump appears to have some kind of dim realization that by refusing to say he’d accept the results of the election, he’s really stepped in a bigly pile of tremendousness. Practically every major newspaper and media site is calling him on the carpet for this today, in a chorus of outrage that this man would so casually delegitimize one of America’s most vital and important institutions, setting the stage for violence from his increasingly crazed followers.

So today at his rally in Delaware, Ohio, Trump addressed this problem he’s made for himself (which is how all of Trump’s problems originate) — by making it even worse.

“I would like to promise and pledge to all of my voters and supporters and to all of the people of the United States, that I will totally accept the results of this great and historic presidential election — if I win.”

It’s been obvious since Trump started ranting about a “rigged election” that his motivation was purely selfish and narcissistic; that he wouldn’t be pushing this nonsense if he were winning. Today he made that obvious inference quite explicit.

I disagree. Remember all the discussion over the last few years about the GOP being stuck in ‘Epistemic Closure’, because they only watched Fox News, listened to Hate Radio, and read NRO and other right-wing opinion sources?

Well, Trump is like a distillation of that. He attacks Fox News except for Hannity and O’Reilly, he listens to Alex Jones, and not does he only read Breitbart, he actually HIRED the head of Andrew Breitbart’s Rotting Corpse to run his campaign.

The worse things have gotten for him, the LESS he’s left that ever-shrinking bubble, because those are the people who tell him that the ‘Bill’s Women’ stunt in the second debate worked, that ‘Because you’d be in jail’ was a master stroke, and that ‘Such a nasty woman!’ will get him suburban women’s votes.

Association with Russia[edit]

RT gala dinner in Moscow, General Flynn is seated next to President Putin. Jill Stein seats across.
In retirement, Flynn was described by the Washington Post as “not hostile to Russia,”[21] while Michael Crowley of Vox described Flynn as having “an odd affection for Russia and its authoritarian government.”[22]
After retiring from service with the U.S. government, Flynn began appearing semi-regularly as an analyst on RT, a Russian state-owned English-language news outlet.[21][22][23] In 2015, Flynn attended a gala dinner in Moscow in honor of RT, where he was seated next to the Russian president Vladimir Putin.[23] Before attending the event, Flynn gave a paid talk on world affairs to a group; Flynn defended the Russian payment in an interview with Michael Isikoff.[23][24] Journalist Michael Crowley of Politico reported that “At a moment of semi-hostility between the U.S. and Russia, the presence of such an important figure at Putin’s table startled” U.S. officials.[23]

Blind Frog Belly White  Oct 20, 2016 • 11:44:21am

The stupid thing about Trump is how easily he could defuse so many of these things. Let’s take the election concession thing.

Last night, he could have said, “Of course I’ll accept the results of the election. But I am concerned about voter fraud, and it would be one of my goals as President to push for reforms that would make it much more difficult.”

But he didn’t.

Today, as this blows up, he could have even told his little joke “Of course I’ll accept the results - if I win!”, and then followed up after the laughter (it was his crowd, after all) with ‘Seriously, though, free and fair elections are the hallmark of our democracy, and even after hard-fought campaigns, we accept the results, and move on. That’s who we are.”

But he didn’t. And he didn’t, because he can’t be a loser. Bankruptcies? “I took advantage of the laws of the country, made business decisions,” etc. Failed businesses? “The government’s regulations made it impossible.”

No taking of responsibility, for anything, ever.

I think Trump hopes to avoid the stink of being a loser, using the ‘Citizen Kane’ method, but it WILL bother him, and he’ll never, ever shut up about it. I was listening to NPR on the way to work today, and there was a discussion of whether Trump tries to take over as the leader of the GOP, or forge a new party, and one guy said neither, because Trump has never shown any willingness to work hard and stick to it, to do any kind of organizational work like this would require.

Look at his campaign - rallies. Tweets. No ground game. No focus. Basically, Trump flies to a new town, blathers on for an hour appealing to the sense of resentment in some segment of white people, then he goes someplace else. When people were begging him to start working for the Party, to run an ad campaign, to start a ground game, to do any of the things it takes in America today to win nationally, he couldn’t be bothered. He’d win it his way, because of his huge rallies, and free media saturation.

If he won’t change to win the Presidency, he won’t change to organize a party, or to organize a takeover of the current one.

The Milwaukee Police Department said Thursday that a police officer — whose fatal shooting of a man in August set off violent unrest there — has been arrested after a report of sexual assault came in while the demonstrations were ongoing.

Officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown was arrested on Wednesday night after a police investigation that ended with the Milwaukee County district attorney filing criminal charges, the department said in a statement. Heaggan-Brown, 24, was charged with five counts, including two felony counts of second-degree sexual assault.

Police said a man told authorities he was sexually assaulted by Heaggan-Brown while turmoil dominated Milwaukee’s streets two days after the officer killed Sylville K. Smith, 23.

In court documents, authorities say the man told police that the officer, who was off-duty, had raped him at about the same time that other Milwaukee officers were responding to reports of gunshots, making arrests and having rocks thrown at them in the area of the demonstrations.

Because Zika is such a great thing to joke about.
*spit*

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday got distracted by a mosquito during remarks at a campaign rally.

During the rally in Ohio, Trump stopped speaking and waved his hand at the mosquito.

“Get that mosquito out of here,” Trump said, to laughs from the audience.

“I get a little nervous with mosquitoes nowadays folks. But up here you haven’t been hit yet. Right? That’s what we need, is a nice mosquito bite,” he continued.

“Mosquito bite, right smack in the middle of the nose. No, we don’t want it.”

The GOP nominee appeared to be referring to the Zika virus, a mosquito-borne disease that causes birth defects.

In Florida, just more than 1,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus.

Want a frightening thought? Some have pointed out that to a great extent, whether he concedes or not is largely moot. The states will certify their results, the electors will meet and vote, and whoever wins that will be sworn in as the 45th President. Obama flies off to retirement, and the new President takes office.

Leaving aside whatever social and political effects there will be if Trump refuses to concede, PRACTICALLY, he can’t change, or possibly even much AFFECT the process.

But imagine if he won, and again, leave aside just how bad that would be. 2020 arrives, he runs for reelection, and loses. Does he relinquish the office?

I know that this is the nightmare scenario that wingnuts sketched out in 2000 and 2012, that a Democratic President would declare an emergency and refuse to step down a the end of his term. But neither Clinton nor Obama EVER said that the election was rigged and they’d ‘have to see on election night’ to determine if they’d accept the results.

I do not think I’m wrong saying that he’s doing more damage to this country than those 19 hijackers in 2001.

re: #78 Blind Frog Belly White

I disagree. Though I’m sure that any “Party” with Donald Trump as its head/figurehead would probably be organized and managed along the lines of his other endeavors, i.e., basically a brand-driven grift.
But then again, a new reality-TV/opinion cable network would seem to be more his speed: the same opportunities to spout off nonsense for cash (a la Trump U), but less work. Maybe his pal Vlad can arrange the financing for him…..

I feel like someone needs to point out that the last time there was pre-election talk of not accepting the results of the presidential election, it ended with a little historical event called “THE CIVIL WAR”.

Of course, based on much of what we see from the wingularity, that’s what they want anyway.

He’s the “religious” one, with Christian religion apparently meaning that one has to back the reality-TV host, the lifetime casino-owner with five kids from three different living wives.

From the comments of that story (which is disgusting on so many damned levels):

Do you have a proposed alternative solution?

Killer robots, perhaps?

Or simply going without police at all?

And of course, I did:

Me 3:18 PM EST
Why yes, yes, I do, thank you for asking.

1. Psychological testing before being allowed to become a cop.
2. Ongoing Psych testing to ensure they have not lost it.
3. Training on how to deescalate situation, not escalate them to violence.
4. Respect training for those you serve, while understanding and being able to respond to threats - perspective training.
5. Community/Police efforts to communicate with each other.
6. Removal of bad police and those who protect them. You cannot create trust and serve a community when you protect each other without question.

I am a big police supporter and always have been. But lately there are too many stories for this old white woman to comprehend. We used to be better than this and I hope we will be again. The above is a start.

I suppose that makes me a sucker, being an atheist who has only ever had the one wife and trying to live a worthwhile life.

Most have been passively re-litigating the Civil War (via flags and stuff) and many would like to do so with weapons.

It’s also true that the US reaction to 9/11 was more damaging to the US than the terrorist attack itself.
