And I was told I’m insane by a Wikileaks’s supporter for saying that.

I started raising the alarm about Russian propaganda and political subversion 5 years ago. I felt like a prophet crying in the wilderness. I wish I had been wrong: It is very gratifying to be vindicated but it is horrifying to see just how pervasive and influential it has become.

Not sure that ultimately the theory that the media/ international bankers/Washington Elite conspired to rig the election will end up being more popular on the Right than the conspiracy theory that Trump was a liberal mole panted in the GOP by the Clintons to destroy it. Only time will tell.

If the GOP semi-splinters into Evagelical/Establishment/Deplorable factions you’ll hear that being said within the party. There is going to be a lot of finger-pointing and blaming external causes since the GOP seems to be unable and unwilling to accept the fact that maybe, just maybe, they lose due to the policies they espouse.

They can believe two totally contraposed theories at once. They do it all the time—Obama the feckless, ineffectual, Machiavellian dictator, for example.

Nah, I got you a better conspiracy theory, one I figure will be the theory for years to come: Trump was planted by the Russians to discredit the GOP, all as part of a plan with the Clintons to discredit any conservative opposition.

I had a really hard time with some of the grammar in the article.

The video, which was just released earlier this week and made by conservative activist James O’Keefe of Project Veritas, was paid $10,000 by the Trump Foundation in May of 2015 - one month before Trump’s announcement of candidacy.

…the video was paid $10,000 by the Trump Foundation?

Guys, that’s just fucking sloppy.

I’m ashamed and embarrassed just reading them. These are the same people who claim America is an exceptional nation. It can never really be as long as we have those who fear everything, lack critical thinking skills, abhor research, and believe every conspiracy theory and piece of propaganda they hear. They don’t strengthen the nation, they weaken it. Poor deluded souls.

When the press gets around to asking Trump’s get-out-the-vote stud why he left the campaign at this crucial point, I don’t know what he’ll say, but I know what he’ll be thinking: “Get out the vote? Fuck it, the vote has done got out, and it ain’t comin back. Don’t bother to lock the door behind my ass, either, suckers.”

You know what leaves me absolutely gobsmacked? Thirty years if people had been supporting the leader of Russia the way Trump and his followers support Putin, they would have been called Commies and Reds. And no self-respecting Republican would have been caught dead on the side of the Commies. To see the next generation of Republican wannabe leaders cozy up to Putin and the Kremlin is very disorienting.

Damn—just stopped by to bitch for a minute. My project, which starts tomorrow, is already in deep shit. The employment agency was supposed to recruit 25 people—as of tonight, they have twelve.

So many shifts still unfilled, and I am pissed. I kept telling them that if they didn’t think they could get enough people, I would hire a second agency to fill in. They kept saying they had it all under control.

My boss, unfortunately, will be there tomorrow for the training, and will probably go batshit. And will, on the spot, try to figure out 25 ways we can avoid this problem in the future (I’ve already told him that I’m avoiding it by retiring and not fucking doing any more of these projects, but he doesn’t seem to listen.)

It will (most likely) all work out—I will have to do a second training during the week and probably stay a few extra days, but this is no way to start out and I’m am not a happy camper.

Strange days. The response is very telling, too. More evidence of right wing collusion with the Kremlin appears every week than HUAC and McCarthy even claimed to have against American leftists during their entire miserable careers. Trump’s military adviser is on the Russian payroll, for God’s sake. Russian fronts like RT, Zerohedge, and Sputnik are treated as wholly credible media by the same people who routinely denounce and threaten our free press as “state controlled.” Yet they largely get away with it.

Speaking of those days, this afternoon I was waiting for a pedestrian sign to change to WALK, standing next to a big burly guy who looked in his twenties who was carrying a shiny new garbage can lid. Our eyes met and I informed him that in my day carrying a lid in public could get you thrown in jail. He asked, “Really?” and I gave him a very short précis about hippie slang before the light changed and we parted ways. Ironically, I think he was stoned.

The Ecuadorian hide-out is probably the most bugged office suite in the world, and not just by government actors like MI-5 and CIA. British tabloids have been known to do such things and those (apparent) bunglers behind the Todd and Clare fiasco might be expected to try something similar if they had the wherewithal. There might be others who do have such means.

The whole Todd and Clare thing was either the most elaborate prank ever or the worst attempt to smear someone ever. Either way, it smelled fishy from the outset. I halfway believed it, given all the details in the report to the UNGC, but once I poked into who or what Todd and Clare are, I concluded they were either bugnuts crazy or clumsy ratfckers.

Supposedly, this dating service has been around since 2011 as an email and mobile phone app service, and only entered the Web and social media in late 2015. Who the hell does that? It appears to be entirely a fabrication.

One of my former American students posted this on Facebook. I’m sharing it here in its entirety, but putting it behind private tags because of possible trigger issues. She is a graduate of West Point and on active duty. It’s a personal story about her experiences with domestic violence. There are no names in the story.

Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity seek asylum at the Russian embassy.

Ambassador responds: “No , you idiots, no dacha for you. You weren’t supposed to believe that bullshit yourselves.”

Wow.

It’s not just a cover. It’s a 14-chapter editorial.

To take full stock of Trump must be to understand the urgency of barring him from the White House, as well as to reckon with how an authoritarian fabulist has gotten so close to leading the globe’s beacon of democracy.

History will mark the presidential contest of 2016 for demagoguery that distorted America’s electoral process from a competition of ideas into, on the one hand, a reach for power based on a cultish thirst for vengeance, and, on the other, a bipartisan drive to save the American presidency itself.

Herewith, we fervently pray, is the political obituary of Donald Trump and all that he stands for.

Judging from the Al Smith Dinner boos, Trump will never play in that town ever again. Any shred of tolerance New Yorkers had for Donald Trump is gone forever.

Debate trilogy could have been worse. There could have been ewoks.

In fact, the expectations are so low for a constructive, rational third debate that the only way it could get any worse is if they bring in Ewoks. That’s right, the furry, teddy bear-like creatures from the planet Endor that ruined Return of The Jedi.

Yes, the only way this vile shit-show of a debate could be more horrifying is if, mid-debate, a herd of Ewoks is released onto the stage to make quaint weapons out of tree trunks in order to adorably stop Trump from attacking Clinton, and inducing more eye-rolls than his constant invocations of Bill Clinton’s marital indiscretions.

So unless, by some miracle, the third debate is cancelled, the best thing to do is pretend it never happened, and just pray they never make prequels.

Socialist Workers Party

Socialism & Liberation Party

They’ve got Gary Johnson’s number!

Here in Cali Clinton/Kaine have the bottom slot. Isn’t going to make a difference though, she’ll win the State by miles.

Just a thought. Obama skewered Little Marco today. Do you think that an outgoing, popular President can change a Senate race this late in the cycle? It’s a puzzlement.

I would like to think so, because Marco was always setting himself up as the Obama of 2008 for the R’s of 2016, but he had neither the smarts or the juice.

In New York at least. I said earlier he was going to have to move to Palm Beach after this. Anne Laurie at Balloon Juice agrees with me:

ETA: Since someone asked, in Adam’s earlier post — you don’t have to be Catholic to attend the Al Smith dinner, but you do have to have something to offer. Since it’s a fundraiser for Catholic Charities, most attendees buy as expensive a ticket as they can afford, because just getting your name on the guest list holds a certain NYC social imprimatur. Assuming Donald wasn’t lying tonight, that’s why his father might’ve taken him to earlier dinners, even though Fred was (at the very least) not happy with Catholics in politics. And since the NYC ‘Democratic machine’ has traditionally been heavily Catholic (all those Irish/Italian/Polish/Hispanic/Vietnamese immigrants), politicians of all parties have been eager for the privilege of being seen rubbing shoulders with all those ‘princes of the church’ and the high-dollar society people who help bankroll them. Being booed at tonight’s dinner wasn’t just a political disaster for the Trumps — it was a social catastrophe as well. Donald and Melania were being put on notice that they might as well retire full-time to Palm Beach with the other superannuated back numbers (not that they were exactly A-list guests at NYC social events before this).

My dad was born and grew up in Denver and was a ski freak, much as you. My first initiation was at A Basin in 1967. I was eleven. Bunny slopes, intermediates. Came back the next year, went up top.

Dad went to back to Vietnam in ‘69/’70 and we went back to Colorado in the winter of ‘70. Got to the Basin after a remarkable snow fall that dumped three feet of powder at the top of the hill, but was a whole lot wetter down among the trees and dropped some branches. Dug a ski under a fallen branch and dislocated my right ankle and broke a fibula (Thank you Rotomat bindings!). In spite of that, I’ve always loved that mountain.

The US Navy scuttled all ninety-one of its ratings. Sailors will no longer be identified by their rating (such as mine, Aviation Electronics Technician First Class, or AT1). They will now only be identified by rank (Petty Officer First Class.)

The ruling came from Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus’s ruling in January to get rid of -man from ratings (such as Mineman or Torpedoman). After some study, Seaman would be kept as there was no acceptable alternative (“sailor” applies to everyone in the Navy). Airman, Constructionman, Fireman, &c for E-3 and below were eliminated.

This includes the three ratings from the Continental Navy (Quartermaster, Boatswain’s Mate, and Gunner’s Mate).

Officials say the controversial move will improve sailors’ lives and ease their transition into the civilian workforce by broadening their skills in this tectonic shift in Navy’s personnel system to redraw the traditional lines between enlisted job specialties — a massive shake-up that is only beginning. Within the next three to four years, earlier if possible, the service plans to allow sailors to retrain in related skills, expanding their worth to the Navy while reaping broader assignment opportunities as well as increased advancement changes and greater access to special pays and bonuses that come with the most critical skills.

“We’re going to immediately do away with rating titles and address each other by just our rank as the other services do,” said Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Robert Burke in a Sept. 19 interview. “We recognize that’s going to be a large cultural change, it’s not going to happen overnight, but the direction is to start exercising that now.”

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte anounces “separation” from the United States in Beijing.

stripes.com (Goes to Stars and Stripes)

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced that his country is separating from the U.S. in a speech before a Beijing economic forum on Thursday, after handing China a major diplomatic victory, agreeing to resume dialogue on their South China Sea territorial dispute following months of acrimony.

The rapprochement between the two Asia nations could widen a political rift between the United States and the Philippines, whose recently elected leader has made no secret of its antipathy for America and ordered an end to joint maneuvers between their militaries.

“Your honors, in this venue, I announce my separation from the United States … both in military and economics also,” Duterte said. His remarks were met with applause, but Duterte was not more specific.

Somehow I wandered into my “Interesting” bookmarks. I more or less randomly clicked on a bookmark which turned out to be Queensland Globe KML. I have to assume it’s from when I was getting to know my, at first Internet, and later IRL friend from Mackay, Australia. There’s a link to a KML overlay for Google Earth. The first thing I noticed when I clicked on the KML data link (which will open in Google Earth, if you have it) was I can see peoples dogs in their back yard. The second and most amazing thing is there must be a city law to own a umbrella clothesline. I’d say at a minimum, 60% of all homes have one in their back yard. The images are so detailed you can see the actual clothesline wires.

From the Wichita Eagle:
kansas.com

The Kansas Speaker Pro-Tem of the House Peggy Mast (R-Emporia) called a quote from Adolph Hitler “profound”:

A Kansas House leader said Thursday that her intent was to criticize Planned Parenthood when she called Adolf Hitler’s words profound in a Facebook post.

“Great quote from Hitler in the video,” Speaker Pro Tem Peggy Mast, R-Emporia, the No. 3 Republican in the Kansas House, posted to her Facebook page Thursday morning. “Please listen to it closely. His words are profound! Let’s start using discernment.”

Mast, who is not seeking re-election, did not return phone calls. She did, however, take to social media to clarify her position.

She said in another Facebook post that her intent was to compare Planned Parenthood, the country’s largest reproductive health provider, to the Nazi leader and that she “was not in any way agreeing with Hitler’s words.”

She was citing the testimony of Gianna Jessen testifying before Congress against Planned Parenthood. Jessen quoted Hitler about propaganda techniques, comparing them to what Planned Parenthood allegedly does.

and then, still reading, he makes a series of nasty remarks without any joke content. hey, the remarks, the insults would have been acceptable if they had been couched in jokes, but why just rip out some nasty cracks? didnt whoever prepared his remarks take care to make sure they all at least sounded like jokes?

of course hillary was pretty rough, too. i would have been happier if she had left two or three of the nastier ones out

Uhhhhhhhh……when the temperature is over 35C outside every day, two things happen:

i) You really don’t want to be running a tumble dryer inside your house. Every little bit of heat that is generated inside your house is another bit of heat that the air conditioner has to overcome.

ii) Drying clothes outside becomes the quickest way of getting them dry most days of the year.

Not to cast aspersions on anybodies asparagus, but from a California perspective, we all use clothes dryers, I’d say there are maybe 1% with clotheslines and you can’t say California doesn’t have weather conducive to outdoor drying.

We had nothing but a clothesline when I was a kid even in Seattle, where it rains 24/7/365—potential tourists take note. My dad put a pulley on the back of the house and one on a tree easily 50 feet away and ran a steel cable around them. You could stand in one spot and just keep reeling the clothes away.

I have nothing against clotheslines, I even offered to build one in our back yard when we bought this house in 1994. My wife said, “Fuck that” and now I get in trouble for using the wrong heat on the dryer for my wife’s and daughter’s undergarments!

Which reminds me of a drying technique: Air dehumidifier in an enclosed space with a clothes line. Reportedly more economic than a tumbler, produces much softer laundry than a classic clothesline. The gotcha is the volume/area of the room and getting the air circulation right.

In New York at least. I said earlier he was going to have to move to Palm Beach after this. Anne Laurie at Balloon Juice agrees with me:

From what I know of NYC high society, which is precious little, being booed by the crowd means “we don’t want you here ever fucking again, assuming we ever did before.” High society in the City is notoriously snobbish, and the Trumps got their start in outré Queens as basically slum lords. Makes no difference how much dough Daddy Trumpbucks made. He was an upstart from the wrong side of the tracks. Donald tried to polish the family rep by trying to be a real estate magnate in Manhattan and Atlantic City, and totally fucked it up. So, he did himself no favors pretending to be some kind of real estate mogul, because everyone knows he’s a fraud.

You’ve probably watched Titanic, right? Molly Brown was basically an upstart and no one in high society accepted her as one of the fold. High society in NYC has not changed much in the intervening century. You could be dead broke, but if your name is Rockefeller or Roosevelt, you’re one of them. You could a billionaire, but named Trump, and fuhgedaboudid, buddy.

When Reuters asked the WMA this week for an update on Desai’s legal situation, spokesman Nigel Duncan said the association had nothing more to say.

A Reuters investigation published in July last year showed that the Indian Medical Association had incorrectly told the WMA that charges against Desai had been withdrawn. Representatives of major doctors organizations accepted the information as fact. The Indian Medical Association said last year that it never misled the WMA.

[…]

Desai was jailed that year and his inauguration as the WMA president was suspended. He was later released on bail. In 2013, the WMA decided to lift the suspension after receiving assurances from the Indian Medical Association, which Desai once headed.

Judging from the Al Smith Dinner boos, Trump will never play in that town ever again. Any shred of tolerance New Yorkers had for Donald Trump is gone forever.

Considering that Trump’s been exposed as a cheapskate who never donates to any charitable causes, that entire circuit of galas and events will turn their collective backs on him.

And it’ll entirely justified.

A presidential campaign is not a fucking “show,” as the sitting president has pointed out. Showmanship belongs on the theatrical stage, not in front of millions of people at a political debate, which could determine the future of our nation. Joe and Mika are idiots.

Thoughts?

Rubio is a front runner in 2020. Him losing this year might end that. Obama is playing the long game to weaken one of Hillarys strongest threats.

A number of popular sites and services are down right now for many users, including Twitter, SoundCloud, Spotify and Shopify. The cause appears to be a sweeping outage of DNS provider Dyn, as a result of a DDOS attack, according to a post on Hacker News.

We’re tracking the outage and will let you know if we discover anything further about outage length, cause or sites affected.

Other sites experiencing issues include Github, Airbnb, Reddit, Freshbooks, Heroku and Vox Media properties. Users accessing these sites might have more or less success depending on where they’re located, as some European and Asian users seem not to be encountering these issues.

Oh yeah, Reince fretting as Trump rises in the polls, Reince freaking out about the final two being Trump and Cruz. I mean the whole outrage about the emails between the Clinton high ranking staffers is just so fake to me. Lee and people who follow politics know that politics can be ugly and they know that if Bernie’s staff’s mails were leaked, they’d have similar things. After releasing the emails themselves, the most dangerous thing Wikileaks is doing honestly is presenting to the casual American public this idea that what the Clinton campaign’s internal bullshitting is somehow unique. As I said, if you were to release the RNC emails, Bernie’s, and Trump’s, you’d find a lot of the same stuff but Julian isn’t releasing them because it doesn’t serve his narrative. If he’s truly this watchdog for the public good like his admirers claim, he’d do that too but he won’t. The guy has a blatant agenda.

I like her a helluva lot more than I did 6 months ago.

I started out feeling I reluctantly had to vote for her just to keep Donald out of office. But a long campaign, for all the angst it causes us, is a good way to get a feel for how the candidates conduct themselves under pressure and how well they manage a large organization, and she’s been aces.

She hired all the right people, they do their jobs incredibly well. There’s been no turnover. She’s shown grace and poise beyond the ordinary, is well-prepared for every eventuality, and has exquisite timing for when and how to bring not-her-natural-allies onboard. I no longer expect generic competence from her in office, I now expect superior performance.

Top Kansas Republican Calls Hitler’s Words ‘Profound’ In Facebook Post

Context: she is not praising Hitler but trying to tie his words to Planned Parenthood and their message.

Granted, Hitler did not rise to near world domination without having a few profound insights into politics and human nature.

But to these people, Planned Parenthood is just a state-sponsored death camp for fetuses.

And that point of view is just as disturbing as any references to der Fuehrer’s Facebook.

She hired all the right people, they do their jobs incredibly well. There’s been no turnover. It was a 16 candidate field that sucked royally, which is why anyone/everyone entered it.

The well-funded candidate - Jeb - flamed out early.

Walker? Toast. Perry? Pataki? Santorum? Huckabee? There and gone. Never generated any traction.

Carson (who was a walking piece of toast for all the nonsense he spewed). Pathetic.

Fiorina? Soggy white bread whose own business record rivals that of Trump for destroying companies in her wake.

That left Cruz, Rubio, and Trump. That was essentially a 3-way race and Trump decimated them handily. For all the talk about how they were seasoned/experienced candidates, they failed miserably against Trump mostly because they wouldn’t or couldn’t attack the heart of Trump’s message.

Trumps National Poilitcal Director ‘Steps Back’

talkingpointsmemo.com

Donald Trump’s national political director will “step back” from his role overseeing the Republican nominee’s ground game with less than three weeks to go before Election Day, Politico reported Thursday.

With Trump trailing Clinton in a number of critical battleground states and lagging in the polls, this announcement could spell trouble for the campaign’s get-out-the-vote efforts.

“I have not resigned but for personal reasons have had to take a step back from the campaign,” Jim Murphy told Politico in a statement, declining to offer more detail on the reason for his departure.

For the record, I have three watches. A Casio that cost about $30 with the day of the week display in Chinese and Spanish, a Chinese brand called October with only the date but it has a stopwatch and 24 hour indicator, which cost about $60, and another Chinese brand called Arlbor which cost about $25. The Arlbor is kind of a sports watch, but nothing fancy on it like a stopwatch.

IMO, if it were me, I’d select the Invicta. It has a good look about it as the design is similar to other quality watch brands.

It’s always Reagan-Carter though. Obama was Jimmy Carter in both 2008 and 2012. The Democrats after their struggles in the 70’s and 80’s did attempt to modernize and reinvent their body. They truly did pardon the word here “rebrand.” The GOP hasn’t rebranded or modernized their party. They’re still running the same campaign or if they’ve done what Trump is doing, running a campaign that doesn’t appeal to America’s growing diversity. Here’s some helpful advice Republicans, stop trying to be Reagan, none of you are and you should also consider that Reagan may not be all you crack him up to be either and that he benefited from Democrats who either ran bad campaigns (Mondale admitting he’d raise taxes) or Democrats stuck in a terrible crisis (Carter and the hostages.).

She is a political junkie, works hard, studies hard and can be relentless in pressuring her opposition. I suspect she will have a better ability to “work” with a Republican congress than Obama did.

And I am not slighting Obama at all, complete different circumstances. Clinton will do better because she is an insider, which to me is a good thing right now even if it treated as a problem by so many. Obama was young and an outsider and seen as an cocky upstart.

The date window is too small to be useful to me, but not a big deal. I changed the band to a black nylon nato type and it’s my everyday watch.

Hillary’s campaign is a well-oiled machine. Trump’s is the machine with several parts missing and no oil.

Yep. With all the friction it all runs hot, boils over and comes to a grinding halt. I’m seeing the think acrid blue smoke right now. Won’t be much left but melted metal in three weeks.

Looks like the political operatives are starting to flee the sinking ship….

Donald Trump’s national political director, Jim Murphy, said Thursday he is stepping back from the Republican nominee’s campaign.

“I have not resigned but for personal reasons have had to take a step back from the campaign,” Murphy said, as first reported by Politico.
From MSM

The personal reason may have been that each morning when he faced himself in the mirror with a razor in his hand, his decision was “Shave, or just cut my throat?”.

I think we’ll see 1 or 2 more major defections, especially once Honey Trumper fires off his next Tweetstorm.

I’ve got a Harley-Davidson watch that my first wife gave me as a Christmas present long ago. I’ve never worn it - it’s in its original box in my desk as I type this. Just like my dad before me, I kill watches by putting them on my wrist.

I could probably get a few simoleons for it if I put it up on eBay, but it was a gift and I’ll probably just keep it in the desk drawer instead.

Whut?! No mention of Ohio Johnny? He was overlooked from the get-go and hung in longer than most. He even came to be seen as the not-so-crazy crazy Republican.

Had his own party taken him more seriously and got behind him and made sure about 10 of the others were not in the race, Ohio Johnny would have been a candidate to take more serious.

As both BeachDem and I kept saying…he is a good politician. Yes, he is an asshole. But in a party of assholes, he may have been their best choice.

Apparently, the Trump campaign is spending a whole lot of money on lawyers and legal representation during the campaign. I lived without a watch for a long time after I got a cellphone. Then I started work in China, where I found none of the classrooms had clocks. There were bells, but I arrange my classroom activities to finish at a suitable time, and constantly referring to my phone (take it out, wake it up, etc.) was a nuisance and much too obvious to students. I can glance at my watch less obtrusively. Plus, while traveling by air, which I do quite a bit nowadays, a watch is way more convenient.

I wish I was optimistic enough to see her win TX. I’m just not. But she’s within shouting distance in the polls and she’s spending money here in October, which is enough to scare the bejeezus out of the Texas Republicans. If she proves me wrong and wins Texas, my celebratory hangover will be epic.

He won the primaries without much of a ground game, he had Fox and CNN fully on his side. And he realized that he could say and do outrageous things that distanced him from the rest of the pack without torpedoing his changes, so he grew even more daring and gained even more media attention.

That all worked well up to the nomination, but he refused to let the RNC cramp his style by letting some (paid) professionals in to manage his campaign.

Mika has been anti Hillary Clinton since forever - “but but she is voting for Hillary” - I would doubt it from all she has said in the past 3 months - and is still saying.

SUNY professor says Trump win at least 87 percent certain; other polls ‘bunk’

Norpoth wrote in The Hill that although the race looks decided, current polling methods are “bunk.”

The projections for Clinton are all based on opinion polls, which are flawed because they don’t reflect actions, Norpoth wrote. They’re about what voters think of Clinton or Trump, but they can’t tell us exactly how voters will act on those thoughts.

“It is ingrained in all of us that voting is civic duty,” he says. “So nearly all of us say, oh yes, I’ll vote, and then many will not follow through.”

Instead of opinion polling, Norpoth relies on statistics from candidates’ performances in party primaries and patterns in the electoral cycle to forecast results. The model correctly predicted the victor in every presidential election since 1996, according to the Daily Mail.

Ah, screw it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

retired from my first career in 1992 and went cross country motorcycling for about a year. mothballed the watch before i left. (hadnt seen easy rider yet). pocket watches are tough to read on a bike. and i never really needed to know the time.

also didnt again have a time exacting a job since so havent ever needed a watch. i dont miss it

next career was scuba instructor. like RBS, an inexpensive dive watch fit the bill. mostly because pocket watches dont take to scuba diving either

there are clocks everywhere and fortunately i rarely need to know the exact time. im lucky that way

re: #361 Belafon

His model is very good at predicting every election that has already happened, as are every other model created to predict elections.

You use prior history to confirm that the model works, but even then, the guy claims that he’s had to modify the model to make it confirm the prior election results.

IOW, it seems that he’s fudging things.

I also question his methodology on relying on primary election outcomes, particularly when Clinton had a far larger primary victory against Sanders than Obama did against Clinton in 2008. Trump’s margin was slimmer than most, because of the multi-candidate race splitting the delegates.

How he ends up giving Clinton a lower score even though she did far better than Obama suggests that there’s something else going on with his methodology. And he’ll be proven wrong.

Things must be really FUBAR behind the scenes for this guy to quit now. Maybe he got tired of having to argue that Trump needs a ground game and that no, rallies don’t count.

The first female president possibly will have ridden the coattails of her husband (who has been accused of rape) to the Oval Office; the GOP nominee likes younger women, used to hang out with a known pedophile and bragged on video about doing to women what the preacher did to me so many years ago.

You can say what you will about Bill Clinton or Ted Kennedy or anyone else. I cannot condone or dismiss any of the talk. But goddamnit, Hillary Clinton is a person in her own right; a former senator and Secretary of State, FFS. She is not riding coattails. A wife is not a dynasty, she’s her own goddamned person.

Washington Post has a scathing takedown of Trump at the Al Smith Dinner…..

At charity roast, Donald Trump delivered what might as well be a campaign eulogy

NEW YORK — It was supposed to be his opening joke, but it landed with such heavy bitterness that it prompted scattered, uncomfortable laughter.

“A special hello to all of you in this room who have known and loved me for many, many years. It’s true,” Trump said as he took command of the dais at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner on Thursday evening, wearing a white tie and a black tuxedo coat that he kept tugging at.

“The politicians,” he continued. “They’ve had me to their homes, they’ve introduced me to their children, I’ve become their best friends in many instances. They’ve asked for my endorsement, and they always wanted my money. And even called me really a dear, dear friend. But then suddenly, decided when I ran for president as a Republican, that I’ve always been a no-good, rotten, disgusting scoundrel. And they totally forgot about me.”

SNIP

Trump would go on to accuse Clinton of “pretending not to hate Catholics” and mock the Clinton Foundation’s work in Haiti. At one point, he wondered aloud if the crowd was booing him or Clinton, to which someone in the crowd answered: “You!”

Also, WaPo, that’s not a tuxedo coat. It’s a tailcoat, which a gentleman wears at white-tie affairs. A tux is for black-tie affairs, which are one notch down from white-tie in formality.

Well, according to Wikipedia, the Admiral Kuznetzov is

“…conventionally powered by eight gas-fired boilers and four steam turbines, each producing 50,000 hp (37 MW), driving four shafts with fixed-pitch propellers.”

He’s a big man, with a big middle, so I get that getting his suits to fit right might be a problem. My guess is he probably has only one white tie outfit, and he’s put on some weight since he last put it on. And he had no time to get it altered or to shop for a new one. OTOH, a rich magnate like Trump should have a staffer on call to order one up for the NYC gala. That would require planning and foresight, neither of which seem to be Trump’s style.

While he may not be a billionaire, other than self-claimed, he does have $100 to tailor a freaking tux. A guy of his stature does not rent tuxes (he would find that gross anyway, look how he is with bathrooms) so he owns his own. He has worn tuxes in the past. And this was not a last minute event. This event is held every freaking year.

If it’s more bad planning on his part, it’s further proof he cannot handle the job of POTUS (as if anything more was needed) becaue if you can’t plan a fitting to fix your own goddamned tuxedo, you cannot manage a country of more than 300 million people.

I don’t see this so much as pro-Trump activism as a response to those NGOs that wanted to observe the last Russian elections. The message being “the world does not trust you to run a democratic election”.

re: #246 Dr Lizardo

OK, Lizards - what say you? I’m trying to decide between two watches, an Invicta and a Hamilton. Invicta uses a Japanese Citizen automatic movement and the Hamilton uses a Swiss movement.

Invicta: timestore.cz

Hamilton: timestore.cz

Or as a third choice, a funky old Citizen bullhead automatic: ebay.com

As you might know, I’m a watch guy - vintage, not modern, but I follow a number of watch forums. General opinion of Invicta is that they offer attractive designs (generally “homages” of other company’s designs), but their QC is spotty and their customer service sucks.

Hamilton is part of the Swatch conglomerate, better quality, higher price. Lots of Authorized Dealers.

A vintage automatic chronograph is a risky and potentially expensive proposition. Buying ANY vintage watch on Ebay is a minefield, adn I say this as someone who has bought over 200 watches on Ebay.

First, there’s the question of wear. Vintage watches will have been used. Maybe used up. Back when mechanical watches were all there was, owners would take their watch in to the watchmaker every year or two to get them completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected, worn parts replaced, and then reassembed, lubricated, and regulated. It was part of owning a watch. With the advent of the quartz watch, a lot of mechanical watch owners stopped getting them serviced, let them run till they stopped, and picked up a quartz watch. Watchmakers, to keep their business alive, often resorted to ‘dip and swish’ cleaning, which left a lot of dirt in the worst places.

Now, as vintage watches become more popular, these get dragged out of Dad’s dresser drawer, and put up on Ebay. But because a professional service runs between 100 and $400, most of them don’t get that before they are listed. Beware!

Second, speaking of service, a chronograph will cost you at least $400 to have serviced properly. We watch collectors have learned that you need to assume that EVERY watch you buy needs to be serviced, no matter what the seller claims. Unless the seller is known to you, do not assume that ‘watch was serviced’ means it was done right. Chronographs need careful adjustment to work right. My old ‘Watch Guy’, who had at that time 40 years of experience, wouldn’t touch them, instead having his partner who trained in Switzerland fix them.

Third, and related, ‘running and keeping good time’ doesn’t mean a lot. A watch running very poorly - low balance amplitude - will still keep time within a minute or so a day on the bench. It won’t run that well on the wrist. And if it wasn’t serviced, wearing it is slowly destroying it.

Fourth, there’s money to be made in vintage watches, especially popular brands and models. For example, the highly prized Omega Constellation - there is actually a cottage industry built around faking these. Reprinted dials, new cases made to look like genuine Omega cases from the 1950s, often lesser Omega movements, sometimes cobbled together from several different movements. There’s an entire website devoted to helping collectors determine authenticity.

We vintage watch collectors say that KNOWLEDGE is your sword and shield. It keeps you from getting screwed, and sometimes allows you to get phenomenal deals by knowing more than the seller. Lack of knowledge makes the purchase of a vintage watch a sketchy proposition.

re: #539 Blind Frog Belly White

Thanks for the most informative post!

I’ve decided to go with this: timestore.cz

It’s a good price, and I’ve had good luck in general with Citizen or Seiko watches in the past. There was one vintage Seiko I had, and many years ago, I pawned it because I was in financial straits, and now I regret it deeply. A Seiko bullhead that I picked up for $35 and had it fully restored by a professional watchmaker. One of these:

They sell for a hell of a lot now on E bay.

Yeah, vintage chronos go for crazy prices. That’s why I collect Elgin watches - when I started, nobody else did, so the average price I paid is about $30. I learned how to service them, so that makes it affordable for me - would I pay $100 to service a watch I bought for $30 that I could only sell for $60 at most? Nah.

That’s sort of like me. A rebuild / service on a scuba reg set would run a typical diver about 75 bucks labor and probably another 75 bucks in parts kits. I can do it for the cost of the kits, generally around 40 bucks or so depending on the reg. It’s allowed me to build up a nice collection of regs that I use routinely.

My dad had a quite few Elgins; he liked them. He had a thing for Seiko and Citizen automatics. He also had an old Omega DeVille (his retirement watch) and a few others. He had an EternaMatic Super KonTiki which, sadly, got destroyed in an accident.

I went with Citizen because they’re reliable and well-made watches. I have a Seiko SKX007K2 with the oyster bracelet. Good watch.

I get a raise at the end of the academic year next June……I’ll hold off on the Hamilton until then. :)

RBS

I started out by reading - A LOT. Then practicing on a bunch of old, broken pocketwatch movements to learn how to work with pieces that small without breaking them, or flipping them into oblivion by holding the tweezers too tight, or dropping them by holding them too loosely.

I have a copy of the lesson book from the old Elgin Watchmakers College. They start with a big pocket watch movement. The entire first lesson is to just unscrew one of the big plate screws, remove it, put it back, and tighten it down. Repeatedly. You gradually work your way up to taking the whole thing apart and putting it back together without breaking it. Then you can move on to smaller movements and more complex watchmaking tasks.
